11/8/23.
I've been a fan of Sophomore Lounge for years. From Bill Direen to Huevos, Ryan Davis' label (originally in Louisville, now in Jeffersonville, Indiana) has been releasing diverse sounds for going on 20 years.
It seems appropriate that the label's breakout release would feature Davis (also in State Champion) himself under the name Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band. Pitchfork reviewed it on November 3rd and gave it an impressive 7.9. This LP brings to mind Wilco, The Jayhawks, Son Volt and The Silos. One of the fans who bought this wrote, "David Berman was right when he called Ryan our [Louisville's] best living lyricist."
Joan Shelley is a guest vocalist. Check out her split single with Myriam Gendron on No Quarter.

Gary Louris — Dark Country (Sham/Thirty Tigers)

youtube
With the Jayhawks, Gary Louris infused alt-Americana with an indefinable shimmer, dusting twang-laced melodies with ethereal flights of falsetto and high lonesome harmonies. Here on his third solo album, he’s a good deal more grounded, both musically and personally. The album celebrates late life love and small town pleasures in modest arrangements of voice, guitar and strings.
Dark Country is small in scale but well-executed, personal but not self-obsessed. It’s bit uneven, with a few really good songs and a bunch that are fine but nothing special.
The opener, “Getting Older” is among the best, with its Neil Young-like blare of harmonica and steady, blues-y thrum. Louris’ tenor turns spectral in the high range, cavorting agilely in the whistling, mournful, tremulous upper range. It carries regret and reconciliation without wallowing, and the melody here is strong and memorable. There’s a nice blues guitar solo at the end, too. If all the songs were this solid, Dark Country would be a good-going-on-great album, but they’re not. “Couldn’t Live a Day without You” is a lightweight porch blues ramble, all sunshine and wry uxuriousness. “By Your Side” is even more oversweetened and swollen with sentiment.
Yet in between, there are genuine pleasures. “Dead Porcupine” is a ragged country blues as desolate and deep as a Michael Chapman song. “Blow ‘Em Away” brings back the rough, thrumming energies we heard in “Getting Older” and laces them with ruminative regret. “Listening to Bobby Charles” rekindles affection for the slow, warming pulse of old swamp blues with sharp, slanting guitar work and a confiding reminiscence. A few of these tunes edge into the ethereal, spiritual jangle of Tobin Sprout, notably “Two Birds” and “Helping Hand.”
You end up wishing that Dark Country could dig a little deeper, putting more friction and dissonance into its noir-ish Americana, or if not that, maybe fly a little higher, letting Louris’ high yearning voice linger and transcend. It’s pretty good, but is that good enough? Maybe, maybe not.

1/12/24.
I've been listening to "Time" by Beachwood Sparks from the Sandbox Sessions a lot lately. I've always been drawn to sweet pop in the Americana (I really don't actually like that label) style - The Jayhawks, Wilco, and The Autumn Defense are other examples.
Then, Rowan Smith's "Slow Clouds" came across my radar this morning. Smith was a member of Macguffins (Melbourne, Australia) in the late 80s and early 90s (Cloudberry Records has an excellent CD retrospective available).
After listening to "Slow Clouds" I almost immediately came across Misty Lanes "Colourless Green Ideas" on Third Eye Stimuli Records. Misty Lanes is the vehicle for the work of Steven Schouten. Bandcamp describes his music as influenced by The 13th Floor Elevators and The Kinks.
