So I just have to ask what are your exact opinions on Bulma as a character and as a whole.
Im on mobile so no Read More for yall LMAOO
But to start, as a character she’s pretty interesting in a meta sense: in essence she was the true protagonist of DB for a bit, with goku being an add on for what was ultimately her adventure- obviously things have changed A Lot since then but yk we take what we can get. Even then she’s still an important cast member who contributes a significant amount when she’s allowed to. It’s hard to say she’s a strong female character in her own right when you acknowledge her sexualization in the beginnig of DB, but her importance is undeniable and how she helps push the plot and help the cast is equally true
Moreover i always thought it was rad of her to still be doing her best to help the cast during the cell saga right after she has trunks. In addition i always thought it was cool of her that she never let her one-night stand with ve6eta affect herself negatively during the cell saga; despite being left alone with a baby, bu/ma doesn’t really care and doesn’t make too big of a deal of it and just continues trucking along. Pretty gnarly imo
My condensed compliments end just about there, though. While i can appreciate bu/ma for Everything I Listed Above she’s increidbly selfish, though that’s not really a trait i think is inherently bad and i think it’s good she has a fairly realistic flaw like that. Selfishness isn’t even necessarily a flaw either- it just depends on when it’s most exercised that it really matters; I don’t mind selfish characters, i just don’t want them to annoy me, and for the most part she does a Fine?? job at that. My main grievances towards her probably stem from how she treats yamcha To No One’s Surprise. One because it gets swept under the rug and a lot of people act as though yamcha was the Big Bad Man in their relationship, when it was shown numerous times she hardly cared about him and was ready to drop him at the drop of a hat if he made her the tiniest bit upset. And Two it just makes me upset and irked that her behavior is free-passed all the time by the characters too, pardon oolong making a comment or two once in a while while her behavior is more often treated like a comedy bit that she’s so mean. We all know i can write a whole essay on the dumpster fire that’s bu/ma and yamcha’s relationship, but TL;DR she treats someone she supposedly loves absolutely horribly and i hate it as someone who is Pretty Big on people NOT being pricks to someone they love
I can blame bu/ma’s trash behavior on toriyama’s self-admitted inability to write women and relationships; to toriyama it just seemed as though the only way a relationship could exist is for a woman in media was to constantly be irked with her lover (though toriyama further admits he made bu/ma particularly selfish, stating he doesn’t like girls like her so i can cut him A Crumb’s Worth of slack. He still chose not to have her actions bear any significant conseuqneces when treating yamcha), because Haha Woman Angry; toriyama’s opted to write a “comedic” relationship as opposed to a genuine one and it Painfully shows (not that he’s hardly ever put energy into genuine couples until Z and even then’s a stretch).
To be fair though that’s probably the extent of my complaints about her personality wise? But it’s also a big chunk of her personality that you can argue had lasting effects on yamcha’s person as a whole, and it doesn’t seem like much to a lot of people but it just demonstrates more of the type of person she is- plus her behavior just really hits close home for me Not To Be A Little A Personal On Main But.
I’m probably leaving some stuff out but i’ll end on a high note and say she serves a lot of looks so GG for that. All in all i have a kind of love/discomfort relationship with bu/ma as a character: i can’t deny that she’s relatively progressive as a female character (though i wish that wasn’t an achievmenet honestly LMAO) and she has genuinely made important and cool contributions to the canon. But i also can’t shake how nasty she can be- a trait i dont think id mind if it wasn’t so personal to me at times
