My youngest daughter, who mastered in history, (sorry I had to get that in) and I visited Colonial Williamsburg this weekend.   The last time we were in Williamsburg together she participated in the colonial American Girl doll, Felicity, tour and tea.    Colonial Williamsburg hasn’t changed; then again, how could it?  🙂
Since everyone counts steps… we walked 18,000 steps on Friday and 12,000 steps on Saturday throughout Colonial Williamsburg .. my dogs were barking!   But so worth the visit …
Friday we had a wonderful lunch at Josiah Chownings Tavern and at Kings Arm’s Tavern on Saturday.   At Kings Arm’s Tavern we enjoyed our peanut soup while being serenade with Christmas carols from these 2 entertaining guys:

At R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse and Stage we enjoyed a cup of velvety chocolate.
We toured the Governor’s Palace, Courthouse, Capitol, Magazine, Bruton Parish Church, the Public Gaol and so much more in very random order.   Here is a snippet of the sights throughout Colonial Williamsburg.

Be transported back to the 1800’s at the Tryon Palace
This month I had the privilege to visit historic New Bern North Carolina. The one thing I really wanted to do while there was to visit the the governor’s palace. My husband’s granny had worked there for over 30 years and I was fascinated. During this visit, I was able to experience a trip back in time. The first governor of New Bern was William Tryon and he built a Palace that would live on for centuries. Please join me on a trip back to when New Bern was North Carolina’s first capital city.
Plan for a Full Day
Now this attraction has so much involved you need to give yourself a whole day to really emerge yourself in history. This is just one of the great things to see in New Bern, still its one you do not want to miss! Get your tickets at the Tryon palace history center an all-day pass will cost you $20 for adults and $10 for children. This all-day pass will get you into the Tryon palace history center, the Tryon Palace, the Stanly House, the Dixon House and the New Bern Academy Museum.
  Tryon palace history center
Offering you a premier experience that delves deep into the past, they offer rotating exhibits, a world-class gift shop and spectacular waterfront dining. During your visit here you will be emerged in the history of this great state through multiple interactive activities. There is an amazing amount of history and artifacts within these walls. Start by watching the short film that will take you from the first settlers to current days.
Duffy Exhibit Gallery
Then wander into the Duffy Exhibit Gallery this is one of the rotating displays and may be different each time you visit. The exhibits covered a plethora of different topics from the industrial revolution, to how they dressed, daily lives, even quite a few recipes from the locals.
Pepsi Family Center
Next you will want to experience the Pepsi Family Center. Here you are transported back to the 1800’s through their time machine. If you have children they will love this room, even if you don’t I am sure you will have fun here. There are two electronic based interactive scavenger hunts, on based on a general store and the other one was a kitchen theme. Then climb aboard the Snapdragon and help navigate the ship safely through the sea. The last one teaches you about the process of making turpentine from the sap of the local pine trees. That was New Bern’s largest export during the revolutionary war.
Shop and dine
Make a stop before you continue on your journey to Tryon Palace swing by the beautiful gift shop. They offer a wide variety of items and there really is something for everyone. Then have lunch at Lawson’s Landing which offers you a river walk view of the Neuse River. This is a great place to just enjoy the beautiful North Carolina weather and sunshine. Take a stroll along the river walk for some great photo ops of the Neuse River.
Tryon Palace
The Tryon Palace is really the jewel of New Bern. Royal Governor William Tryon brought John Hawks from London to design and build this marvelous palace. The one standing is not the original, the original burned in 1798. The burned hull sat for many years after a 30-year campaign, the palace was rebuilt and the grounds restored, it reopened to the public in 1959.
  First Capital Building
Governor Tryon had the palace built as the first official New Bern government building for the capital of North Carolina. Yep, New Bern was the first capital of the great state of North Carolina, Raleigh did not become the capital until 1794. Governor Tryon actually lived in the palace with his family. They only lived there a year before they moved when Tryon received the governorship of New York in 1771.
When Tryon left Josiah Martin became the second governor of New Bern in 1775. However, he fled the palace with the start of the American Revolution. Great parties were held at the palace with many high officials making it a point to stop there. Many would stay as travel then was tedious and long. On April 21, 1791, there was a banquet held in honor of our first president George Washington. He was visiting the palace during his southern tour. It is believed that he stayed there during his travels and even danced with the local debutantes while he was there.
Raleigh became the capital in 1794 and the palace was rented out for various uses. It would host a Masonic lodge, a private school, and a boarding house. Sadly in February 1798, a deadly fire started in the cellar as it was being used to store hay. The fire destroyed the entire palace, leaving only portions of its brick exterior.
Rebuilding the Palace
It would take a group of very determined women to get the palace rebuilt and well over thirty years. The palace you visit today is not the original but it is as close as you will ever get. It reopened to the public in 1959 and every detail of its design was scrutinized over to make sure it was as accurate as possible. The horse stable is the only original building on the property. The kitchen also had to undergo extensive renovations. Still, the group did a fanatic job, all the furniture was hunted down from a list that Tryon left of all the possessions at the palace after he had experienced a fire in New York. From that list, they were able to give you the experience you receive today.
Period Actors
What I knew of the palace was that my husband’s grandmother worked there for over 30 years. What I did not know was that she was one of the actors who donned period clothing and helped visitor’s step back in time. You will find all employees of the palace dressed in the clothing of the 1800’s and they help bring the past to life. They perform daily task as they would have been done then. This group of employees shows their love for their jobs and shows it by how they take care of the palace and the guest. Do take the time to really listen to the history they speak of, the knowledge they share and let them transport you back.
Black smith building
You can start off with the blacksmith shop where there is usually two gentleman making all kinds of interesting items. I encourage you to ask about different ones that you have never seen. The workers love to interact with the visitor’s and are a wealth of knowledge about all things involving the blacksmith trade. I found quite a few pieces that I tried to guess their uses and was really quite off the mark. You may find that you will learn a lot from this small building.
Kitchen and servants quarters
This building while refurbished is still quite original. Make sure to swing by the kitchen and see what the cooks have prepared for the day. Again do take the time examine the items just off the kitchen you may find some unique tools that you will have to ask what they were for. This building allows you to wander through what would have been the servant’s quarters. There were different rooms for the men and women. Take note of the mattresses, the clothing and how little there is in the rooms. That is really close to what most servants would have owned.
The Gardens
Allow yourself time to really take in the gardens, depending on the time of your visit they may look quite different from these ones. Still, these miraculous gardens are laid out to precision as to what the original gardens looked like. I could have easily spent hours in this section just relaxing and soaking up the beauty. They allow you to wander freely and I encourage you to check out all the corners and recesses you never know what you may find.
The Palace
You are an important guest as such you will be greeted at the front enterance. An actor in period dress will give you a brief overview of the palace, its history, and the rules while you visit. The first thing you see when you enter is the grand foyer. This is where guest to the palace would have waited for the governor. The tour takes you through several different rooms each with its own history and stories. I found the employees of the palace quite knowledgeable and accommodating. Do keep in mind that this is a three story building and you really need to be able to climb stairs to see it all. However, for those who are unable to climb they do a have a book that you can page through to see the pictures of what is upstairs.
The Rooms
The palace has so many rooms and there is no way I could squeeze all the stories into this post. Plus if I did then you would have no reason to visit it yourself. The main floor of the palace was the business floor, which was where the meetings and state business was conducted. The library was also on this floor and this was where the men would meet to discuss affairs of state.  Once you went up the first flight of stairs you entered the personal residence of the governor and his family. Here you can see the guest suite and the governor’s bedroom.   Also the governor’s children’s rooms and the missus’s entertaining room and dressing room.
Be transported back to the 1800’s at the Tryon Palace
I hope you enjoy the post and all the pictures. I also hope will plan to visit the Palace on your next trip to North Carolina. New Bern has a lot to offer for a small quite town. They have the bragging right to being the birth place of Pepsi not to mention that the New York Times bestselling author Nicholas sparks runs The Epiphany Global Study School. Check out the town, plan to spend a few days maybe a week. It might take you a week just to find all the New Bern bears! Take some time to cruise the Neuse River and just bask in the beauty that is New Bern, North Carolina.
Thank you so much for reading the entire post! I hope you found it interesting and useful. Can I ask you a favor? Would you give it a like and share it with your family and friends? I would greatly appreciate your help in sharing my work!
