The Gentlemen Review - Guy Ritchie's Slick Rehash Of His Own Oeuvre
Cartel wars, illegal boxing matches, bizarre Catholic cultist mafia gangs, thieving gypsies, and deranged scions, Guy Ritchie's 2024 series "The Gentlemen" is a wide range of crazy. Read our spoiler-free review.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) The 2024 Netflix series “The Gentlemen” by Guy Ritchie is like a wild stylish re-hash of his own movies, including the 2019 flick “The Gentlemen” in which Matthew McConaughey played a cannabis mogul looking to sell off his marijuana empire to the highest bidder. This eight-episode show follows young British aristocrat Eddie…

realised i never posted any of my 2024 summaries for tv shows, movies and fanfic. i don't feel like making three separate posts so will condense it all in one post and then make a separate post about my 2025 goals <3
first up: tv shows
i watched 1156 episodes in total from 50 different series (less episodes and series than last year). of the 1156, i had already seen 922 of them which is a bit embarrassing tbh
the most watched in a month was 186 (in january) and the least was 48 (in december). i did try and track days but wasn't consistent
including rewatches, my most watched show was schitt's creek. excluding rewatches, my most watched show was the great british bake off lmao
my most watched episode was - for the second year in a row - currahee (episode one of band of brothers)
my top three genres were comedy, drama and scifi
in total i watched 41,424 minutes of tv this year! the four shortest episodes i watched were all 20 minutes long (an episode of the bear, one modern family episode and then two yu-gi-oh ones). the longest episodes were both two part pilots (DS9 and monk) but outside of that it was currahee
most episodes of tv i watched were released in 2016 (85). the average and median years of release were 2007 and 2008 respectively. the oldest episode was an episode of next gen from 1987 and i watched 24 episodes that were released in 2024
i did try rating each episode but i was a bit loosey goosey with it all and gave the vast majority five stars. i gave one episode of next gen (man of the people) a one star review because it was horrifically offensive lmao
next: movies
for the first time since i've tracked movie watching, i cracked 100 movies this year! specifically i watched 102. however.... only 12 of these were new to me :/ to put that in perspective there were 12 movies that i watched more than once this year
i watched three movies three times this year: the fellowship of the ring, the phantom menace and jurassic park
my biggest movie watching months were december (18 movies), june (17) and january (16). on the opposite end there were three months where i only watched three movies: may, august and july
the day i am least likely to watch a movie is wednesday! this is interesting because i had two classes on wednesday all year. so i wonder if it was a uni thing or a general middle of the week thing
my most watched genres were scifi, comedy and family/childrens
in total i watched 12,407 minutes of movies this year! the average length was 121 minutes but the shortest was 68 minutes (duck soup) and the longest was the extended version of the return of the king
the oldest movie i watched was duck soup (1933) and i watched three 2024 releases: despicable me 4 (with my nephew, i hated it), the merry gentlemen (with my friends, i hated it) and wallace & gromit: a vengeance most fowl (with my partner, loved it!). the average and median year of release were 2001 and 2002 respectively
my rating system is a bit more rigid with movies but i still gave approximately half five stars, which tracks with the amount of movies i rewatched tbh
finally: fanfic
i read 490 fics! based on the three years i've tracked this, it's a little bit less than average. i read 19 fics more than once (including one fic which i read five times.......) and about half of the fics were rereads (this is interesting to me and i defs wouldn't consider this standard for me)
i read from 33 fandoms this year, my top three were hockey (165), game of thrones (73) and inception (44). which is an absolutely hilarious combo in 2024
my top pairing was jaime/brienne (absolutely no surprise there). arthur/eames (inception) were third overall and the rest of my rop five were hockey (which i won't be sharing)
in total, i read about 4.5 million words - this is 1 million more than last year and 1 million less than the year before that, which is pretty neat imo. my longest fic was 73.133 words and then there were three under 100 words but they were all actually fan art. the average length was a little over 9k which is probably a little under my sweet spot tbh
the oldest fic was from 2004 and most fics were either published in 2023 or 2012. the second makes sense because of all the game of thrones and inception but not sure what was up with the 2023
my biggest reading month was october (91) and my smallest was september (21). this tracks with my uni schedule because all of my major assignments were due in september and then i was free lmao
now, a bit about the actual fics themselves: about half were about characters in developing relationships (makes sense) and a quarter were established relationship (something that i love to read tbh)
for rpf, only 5% of fics were future fics. this surprises me because i love and adore future fics but it might just be because there's not that many out there
for canon, there was a pretty even split between canon compliant and canon divergent fics (both around 35% in total) and then 23% were post canon
the most common trope that i read was apparently fluff. this does not sound right at all because i lowkey hate fluff
other popular tropes wereL polyamory, internalised bi/homophobia, amnesia and infidelity
i don't usually read AUs but the big ones were rule 63, trans characters, modern setting, soulmates and vampires. also lots of different time fuckery fics - time loops, time travel, multiverse fics and age regression - and i loved all of them
most of the pwp i read were either threesomes or first time which is a fun combo imo the other really big one i noticed was cunnilingus - shout out to all the game of thrones girlies who think jaime lannister eats mad pussy
there were 12 fics i didn't give kudos too - some were really old rpf and i got embarrassed about it and then the rest were my own fics that i reread
this was, by far, my worst year for commenting on fics. i'm beyond embarrassed about this. i think it was probably because i was rereading a lot of older fics but that's no excuse
this was my first year at attempting to rate fics. it was a bit of an odd exercise because i think it's odd to rate fanfic. however, it was fun for looking at my feelings towards tropes (remember how i read a bunch of fluff? well i didn't give a single fluff fic higher than 3 stars). i am going to keep doing this
now hey if you made it to the end, you're my fav <3

Hi Evie! How about 4, 17, and 27 for the Year in Review asks?
Thank you for indulging me, dearest Kat 🤗🥰
4. How many fandoms did you write for this year?
Let's see... Red, White, and Royal Blue, Gallavich, The Gentlemen (the TV series) and I posted a story for The Old Guard, though it was written three years ago, so that one doesn't really count, does it? 😛
17. Share your favorite opening line.
Oh boy... gimme a moment to scroll through AO3 😅 Okay, this one, from Top of the list:
There's something extremely… gratifying – Ian would swoon at the word, the fucking nerd – about living with your boyfriend.
The rest of them - and I kid you not - are extremely short and more or less deliberately misleading. And it's not that I take issue with how I open stories per se, it's just that, in vacuum, they're not that interesting. The one I picked, though, has that little appositive sentence and the endearment in the form of a profanity + insult and I think it's just neat.
27. How many events did you take part in? (bangs, exchanges, ship weeks, zines, prompt memes, they all count!)
Gallavich Week, of course ❤️
Gallavich Gift Exchange
Gallavich Masquerade
And then, hosted by @ficwip:
Hey, Sweetheart
Level Up!
Dark & Cozy
And two prompt fills for The Prompt Pool
Basically, this confirms what I already knew, which is that I function a lot better with deadlines 😅

2024 Year in Review - full set here ❤️

The Gentlemen - season 1 (2024) review
Tumblr media
Alright, alright, alright….. wait, McConaughey is not in this one? Oh, well that’s not alright, alright, alright…
Plot: When aristocratic Eddie inherits the family estate, he discovers that it's home to an enormous weed empire, and its proprietors aren't going anywhere.
Guy Ritchie is honestly great. Since way back when he made Lock, Stock and Snatch, he’s consistently churned out top quality entertainment, except maybe the Aladdin remake. I mean I totally get he probably got a superb pay check out of it, but honestly what in the heavens did Guy Ritchie have to do with blue genies I will never know. Regardless, where the man really excels at is when it comes to the British gangster genre. The guy can make swearing sound so poetic and melodic - it’s honestly mad how something so otherwise rude can come off utterly beautiful and delightful like a song. Especially in his 2019 film The Gentlemen, the writing in that movie was so good!! Naturally Netflix caught onto this too as we now how a spin-off series.
Going into the show I was looking forward to it but also cautious, as I was aware this new show was missing the star power of the original film. I mean can you blame me? The movie had the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant to name a few. That’s a solid load of A-listers huddled together. As for the show, the names like Theo James or Kaya Scodelario didn’t instil heavy excitement, especially with James as honestly, I always thought he was a bit of a prick. Granted this may be due to when he played the dickhead in The Inbetweeners movie, and gosh do I feel old with that reference, but he just has that face of a guy that’s so full up his own arse. Again, I’ve never met the chap, he’s probably a lovely human being, but I’ve made this prejudgment in my head and as such when I found out he was the lead of this series I naturally rolled my eyes. That being said I give Netflix props as they hired the original film director Guy Ritchie to create this spin-off and even direct some of the episodes and do a lot of the writing, so of course I was going to check this show out.
Never doubt the Guy should be a new cinematic rule. I’m proud to report that the new The Gentlemen series is a fantastic watch. It’s not the most original show, yet it plays out more-so like a Guy Ritchie’s greatest hits, as it’s got his visual flare and style, with the super cool and smooth fashion choices - honestly Scodelario has a wardrobe change every other scene and each time it felt like she was walking out of a Tom Ford fashion exhibit, and then also all the men wearing their gentlemanly suits dripping with swagger and smoking their cigars and drinking their whiskeys - the whole thing is simply infused with that signature upper-class British gangster feel. Ritchie’s signature syllable-heavy dialogue that just rolls of the tongue is also more than ever present here, and whoever decided to cast Giancarlo Esposito in this show deserves a pay rise, as Esposito’s soft-spoken melodic tone proclaiming the colourful lines of Ritchie’s rich exposition was music to the ears.
The cast here too are super game. Theo James was actually solid as the lead young duke, as he had that manly prowess and was very believable as someone who gets shit done. Kaya Scodelario I thought at first was trying too hard to mimic Michelle Dockery from the original movie, but eventually she made the role her own, and she gave enough mystery to her performance to make us feel uncertain of her true motivations. Daniel Ings as the duke loser-cocaine-addicted-brother Freddy was a lot of fun, however I would say his character became a bit overbearing and annoying in the end, as he constantly made so many mistakes throughout that I honestly kind of wanted him to get killed. It’s as if whenever the show needed an excuse for something bad to happen, they’d just get Freddy to fuck up again. Apologies for my language, I don’t usually swear in my reviews, but also this is a Guy Ritchie project we’re talking about, and he uses the F word every other sentence. So fuck it. In regards to other notable cast members, Pearce Quigley as Gospel John, a leader of a religious gang was oddly creepy yet entertaining, especially when he’d randomly scream certain lines for absolutely no reason. Pure psycho. Peter Serafinowicz and Guz Khan have amusing turns. Lastly we have two British gangster alumni Vinnie Jones and Ray Winstone. These two of course were on a different level to everyone else. Of course Vinnie Jones can be quite cheesy when it comes to acting. One can fondly remember his delivery of the line “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch!”. But when it comes to Guy Ritchie, Jones and him have always been a great pairing. Here as the duke estates’ caretaker, Vinnie is super reserved yet again super cool. I think cool is a word that can be used and abused when it comes to this show. It’s all so cool! Then Ray Winstone as the leader of the crime family… I mean it’s Ray Winstone as the leader of the crime family! He got that Godfather-level gravitas, only more Cockney, and it was great watching him do his thing.
When it comes to the story, this show is standalone to the original film. You can definitely see the inspiration though with certain narrative beats and story choices being very reflective/similar to what occurred in the film, and then the hidden weed farm under the estate looked like exactly the same set as from the film. But overall this is completely its own thing, and each episode brings more fun crime shenanigans for the characters to deal and navigate through, and it was consistently entertaining. My only complaint is that I’d say the finale a tad anti-climactic. I think with all the roughness and toughness that the characters go through, the ending tied everything up a bit too conveniently and neatly. I get I’m not to expect the most realistic thing as this is Guy Ritchie’s world, but I did want things to get a bit more messy, especially due to the build up. That being said this is a major win for Netflix, and I’m expecting a season 2 to be green-lit soon, as this is a winning package.
Overall score: 7/10

ARC Review: Hot Earl Summer by Erica Ridley
Tumblr media
Order:
Add to Goodreads:
Publication Date: August 6, 2024
Synopsis:
Bold, curvy Elizabeth Wynchester loves cuddling hedgehogs almost as much as she adores vanquishing villains with the sharp blade concealed inside her cane. Despite others’ opinions about her body and gender, nothing will stop her from seeing justice done. When her next mission drops her at the dastardly Earl of Densmore’s castle, she’s prepared to duel like gentlemen—only to be locked inside! Her trusty sword cannot defeat the castle’s hidden traps… or protect her heart from the devilishly handsome rogue guarding the keep. When reclusive inventor Stephen Lenox agreed to impersonate his cousin for a few days, he didn’t expect the earl to vanish altogether. Nor could Stephen predict mounting death threats… or the arrival of a beguiling, blade-wielding spinster who declares herself his new bodyguard. As the earl’s enemies lay siege to the castle, Stephen fights his way past Elizabeth’s defenses. She’ll share his bed, but when the adventure concludes, she vows to sever their affair. Unless he can somehow convince a swashbuckling siren to surrender her heart… Action adventure meets Regency romance in this feminist romp.
My Rating: ★★★★★
*My Review and Favorite Quotes below the cut.
My Review:
I have been waiting for Elizabeth's story since the very first Wynchester book came out and it's finally here! I loved this so much. Elizabeth was everything I wanted. I loved her percentages to calculate how capable her body felt each day. I loved the time she had to devote to stretching and keeping her body as supple as she could manage in order to minimize pain. I loved how her disability left her able to swashbuckle on some days and unable to get out of bed on others. It was so lovingly and carefully written and I just felt so *seen.* I also loved her unapologetic bloodthirstyness and her absolute refusal to have anything to do with children. She doesn't like kids, doesn't want kids, and I respect that. Stephen was so delightfully nerdy, and Elizabeth's unexpected appreciation of that was wonderful. His Rube Goldberg machines were terribly fun, and their banter and interactions were perfection. And his unexpected bloodthirsty side matched Elizabeth's. I also loved the series of clues and puzzles they had to solve to find the will. It was the perfect challenge for the two of them. Everything about this book was perfection and it was such a delight to read it. Every Wynchester book is a delight, but this one perhaps more than most. *Thanks to NetGalley and Forever for providing an early copy for review.
Favorite Quotes:
"Recover the will and testament first," Tommy said quickly. "And then you can unleash Beth the Berserker."
---
Elizabeth hated feeling helpless. She was only of value when she was out swashbuckling, and worthless when lying about motionless. What could be worse than a worthless Wynchester?
---
She nudged a battle-axe into his cravat. "Stop flirting with me." His eyes widened with interest. "You interpret my use of logical reasoning as...flirtation?" "Everyone shows off when they're flirting. If you don't mean for it to be arousing, then cease doing so."
---
He smiled without responding. It was one thing to avoid an inconvenient beheading, and another to take a berserker into one's confidence. Then again, her blades were still at Stephen's throat. Which was perhaps her idea of flirting.
---
"'Beth the Berserker' is Elizabeth Wynchester at sixty-five percent power?" he said in disbelief. "What must you be like at full capacity?" Her eyes glinted deviously. "The world has yet to find out." "I'm not sure anyone is ready to find out. The universe might come apart at the seams." "Destroyer of Worlds," she said dreamily. "It does have a nice ring to it."
---
This hasn't been a traditional courship-" "Duels, dungeons, and catacombs are the best kind of courtship," she assured him.

Reading This Week 2024 #24
Remembering to type up this report before I run out to volunteer at my local pride event! sorta a light on completed reading week for me simply because I was putting significantly more effort into being a social person that goes to things
Finished:
Accurate Models by KuriKuri on ao3 if you are looking for dunmeshi fic with modern elements, look no further than this labru fic, where Kabru is a procrastinating graduate student (*derogatorily* psych major) who discovers Laios' YouTube videos reviewing the anatomical accuracy of monster sex toys, and develops his canon-typical Laios obsession. it is so funny, and it has such precise characterization. cannot recommend it enough
Started/Ongoing:
Reading Rape: The Rhetoric of Sexual Violence in American Literature and Culture, 1790-1990 by Sabine Sielke working my way through this for research purposes. has offered some interesting insights that I might use/apply to my thesis, but as I get deeper into it, I am skimming it more and more.
Reading Plans:
finish Sielke's book, I have about 60ish pages left in it
i skipped this past months sff book club meetup to go to a lesbian bar, so i picked up the book for July, which is Starter Villain (looks short and sweet!), but unfortunately I think I'm gonna be out of town for the next meet up.... I'd hate to miss two months in a row, but I guess that if I read Starter Villain or not will largely depend on if I like the beginning of it enough to decide its worth reading for myself
other than that, I picked up a KJ Charles book from the library which I haven't read yet, but since its the second in a loose series, i guess that means it's finally time to read The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, which has been wallowing on my shelf for about a year. i intend to start that today, and picking it up was why I remembered to write this post!

A Tempest of Desire (Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James, #5) by
Lorraine Heath
Publisher ‏ : ‎ Avon (December 24, 2024)
Publication date ‏ : ‎ December 24, 2024
Print length ‏ : ‎ 382 pages
A 2 star review
7 years between books in this series left me scrambling to figure out who the older characters were. I knew the names, but their backstories were too long ago. Thankfully I had all the books so I could skim through them for perspective.
After a dramatic start the story bogged down in lust, so much lust, and inner dialog about lust and body parts. Langdon and Marlowe didn't truly have romantic feelings and declarations of love until almost the end. I was left wishing for more sweet words; even if she is a courtesan saying "be my mistress" isn't romantic at all. Langdon didn't think of marriage as a possibility until late in the game & I was wondering if the HEA would be a nice house and credit at a lot of shops. The aeronaut was something new to me, I hadn't realized it was such a trendy hobby. I appreciate the attempt at something new and different but for me it wasn't traditional enough.
Thank you to NetGalley, Avon, and Lorainne Heath for providing this complimentary advance reader copy of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

2024: Book 6 - A Long Time Coming
Tumblr media
A Long Time Coming by Meghan Quinn My rating: 3 of 5 stars I read this book immediately after the book that precedes it in the series, and that was after watching many booktubers/booktokkers talk about how incredible the series was. They were wrong. I read this book while on a business trip in Las Vegas and I almost drowned when I fell asleep reading it in the bathtub at 7:00pm. Thank goodness I have the waterproof Kindle. Ladies and gentlemen…Lia is an IDIOT. Lia was a doormat. Lia was my least favorite of all of the FMCs Meghan has written and she's the reason I stopped reading Meghan Quinn's books after finishing this one…though…to be fair…I may have overdosed on them and I did enjoy quite a few of the others she's written…so I will be returning to the Quinnverse. I did not understand how Lia couldn't grasp the concept that her fiance was a shithead. An utter jerk. The worst person ever. Like…he and his mom were HORRIBLE to her and she was constantly making excuses. And Breaker…HONEY…WTF are you doing? How are you hiding how you feel from yourself when everyone else around you can feel it. It's been MONTHS since I read this book and I'm still aggravated. Can you tell? Also…I was shocked and mildly appalled at the lack of spice in this book. I don't only read for the spice (i know some do and, you do you) but for a friends to lovers story this felt soooo tame and lacking in spicy time. Especially compared to some of the other offerings in the Quinnverse. I use the CAWPILE Review method for my reviews (see explanation here), just to keep me honest and help me understand what exactly I liked/didn't like. My ratings are below. Characters: 7/10 Atmosphere/Setting: 7/10 Writing: 8/10 Plot: 7/10 Intrigue: 6/10 Logic/Relationships: 6/10 Enjoyment: 7/10 Total rating 48/70 divided by 7 = 6.8 ⭐⭐⭐ 🌶️ View all my reviews
