So, I think an explanation might be in order.

I took a break from Tumblr (and the internet at large) for a while. I made a post about it on my main blog before leaving, but I kinda forgot the part where that information is not transferred over to my other blogs. My mistake!

(Updates on my life and a better explanation of why I was gone are here, if you're curious. None of it's terribly important or relevant to this blog.)

Regardless, I'm back now! Mario has still very much been relevant to my life, of course, so here's a couple updates on that vein;

I saw the Mario Movie and I loved it to death. Quite literally, my only real complaint with it is that it wasn't longer. I've still only gotten to see it once (I'm waiting for it to come to streaming, so I can watch it a million times back to back), but I have been obsessively watching it's monetary success. It's the 3rd highest-grossing animated film of all time now, if you weren't aware; Nintendo is almost certainly going to be making more movies and I'm so excited for it.

I also took on the daunting task of making a Mario Timeline, and... it honestly wasn't as hard as I expected to do. Once I got over the fact that there were some things that would never make sense (e.g. Firebrand nullifying the point of fire flowers), it was a simple task of trying to find all the direct references. I now have all* the games put into a chronological order. That'll be something I post about a lot going forward, as it's the first step towards making my own personal version of the lore.

(*Not literally all--because that'll take a million years--but it's all the games that have an actual plot and are canon in my eyes.)

I also finished Sparks of Hope! I realized I didn't keep up my updating with that, my bad. It's a great game, I strongly prefer it to Kingdom Battle. I promise that's not just because Rosalina is in this one.

Other than that, I hope to resume my normal postings here soon. Sorry again for just like... phasing out of existence.

Martha Singing

Martha is a member of the Bendigo South Sudanese Ensemble, formed in 2019. Every week they would come together to ideate, compose, sing and practise their craft, working towards a performance celebrating their culture and heritage. The photo was taken in The Engine Room, a black box performance space that is quite disorienting to be in when the lights are low. I wanted a sense of the subjects floating in the space, emphasising the feeling of being cut off and isolated by the pandemic

As someone who has, both currently and previously, tried to work out the “most canon” lore possible, discerning maps and timelines and such, I can say with certainty that it’s far too late to be trying to retroactively decide a definitive canon.

As interesting as it would be to have one, it quite simply would not be worth the amount of effort it would take to decide what is and isn’t “canon” and then get all of the given lore from the “canon” games to choose as the truth.

you mention the super mario series semi frequently and have itin your username so I thought of all people I'd ask you. what would you think if nintendo tried to make an actual definitive canon for mario, like as in a timeline and a rough map of all the locations in the series? do you think it would recontextualise the older games in a newer way, or would it just ruin what once was a series of semi connected early games, or just something else entirely?

I think that would be a bad idea for three main reasons.

first, the mario franchise is not story-driven, and creating a canon timeline would require forcing an overarching narrative onto a set of games with one-sentence plots. and for the games that do have actual stories, those narratives tend to be so self-contained that it really does not matter at all when they happen relative to anything else. putting them in "an order" wouldn't have any real implications beyond giving fans opportunities to look for contradictions.

second, the mario universe is fantastical and malleable, with new Worlds to explore being introduced in every (good) game. something like a world map would put a fence around that, encouraging new games to stick to previously established settings and ideas. in a franchise that's often infamous for playing things overly safe and being averse to new ideas, that's probably the last thing it needs.

third, nintendo would not do a good job tying all the games together. many games fans care about (like the RPGs) would almost certainly be overlooked, dismissing them as "non-canon". locations of mario kart tracks now have official positions on the Mushroom World Map, but only tracks that are included in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game for the Nintendo Switch. super mario land is carelessly placed on the timeline between mario 3 and world without any thought given to what it implies about mario's relationships to peach and/or daisy, and mario land 2 is just completely ignored.

so while I guess I can see the appeal of fleshing out the lore a little bit, I would not trust nintendo to do anything good or interesting with the idea, and realistically it would cause The Thing That Happened to Paper Mario to bleed more into the rest of the franchise.

Happy New Year!

Time to make some arrangements, of sorts.

Part of my own resolutions for the coming year is to become a bit more organized, in general. And one thing that definitely needs that treatment, in my eyes, is this blog.

I kinda had a more... sophisticated concept of this blog when I made it. Namely having stuff a bit more consistent when it comes to my own posts—stuff like weekly things—but between just getting my footing on the blog, having other responsibilities, *cough* and the Bowuigi brain rot *cough*, it all kinda got away from me.

So! I'm just generally gonna try and start instating stuff that happens a bit more regularly. For instance, I might start trying to spread out my Posts from the Universe a bit more so they're not just in huge clumps all the time. Maybe I'll actually try using the queue function for once in my life.

I've also got some plans in mind for some things I'll be implementing as weekly/biweekly posts—and one of those should be having it's first post tomorrow!

So, hopefully, this blog should be a bit becoming a bit less eclectic from here going forward! Let's see if I can keep that promise! ☆
