TCM Stands in Solidarity with Black Lives
Turner Classic Movies stands with our Black colleagues, talent, storytellers and fans — and all affected by senseless violence and social oppression, because we believe Black Lives Matter. Our parent company, WarnerMedia, is supporting these organizations that work to advance social justice:
Color Of Change
Equal Justice Initiative
The National Action Network
The National Urban League
NAACP Legal Defense Fund
National Center for Civil and Human Rights
WarnerMedia is expanding its content innovation program OneFifty with additional funding to seed issue-focused creative ideas from communities who often go unheard. We are proud to be part of an organization committed to change. We know words and social posts alone are not enough, and we pledge to hold ourselves accountable and take meaningful action. One of the ways TCM is doing that is by amplifying the work of Black voices.
You can also find previous, in-depth conversations to learn more about the history of Black representation in classic Hollywood on our YouTube Channel or in our book Hollywood Black, written by prominent film historian and author Donald Bogle. The following films are airing this month on Turner Classic Movies that showcase different aspects of Black life.

Woody Allen And His New Orleans Jazz Band – Wild Man Blues
“Woody Allen’s New Orleans jazz is a combination of mournful blues and lively syncopation played with raw spontaneity. His clarinet tone is downright edgy in the treble clef, although his low-register work is more soulful. He affects a decorative style with a vibrato frequently wide enough to drive a Mack truck through.
Five of the 15 tracks are from the books of past greats. Louis Armstrong’s “Hear Me Talkin’ to Ya” is a languid lament, Lillian Hardin Armstrong’s “Lonesome Blues” is delivered in an upbeat stop-tempo, and King Oliver’s “Dippermouth Blues” is rendered slow and easy. There’s musical breadth and depth to charts like Fats Waller’s “Come On and Stomp, Stomp, Stomp,” the prayer-like “Lead Me Savior,” and the title track. Eddie Davis (“The Manhattan Minstrel”) is the musical director, vocalist, and banjo player with the seven-piece band and pull-out trio.
Part of a tandem production, this CD features re-recorded selections from the video documentary of the same name. The session was played without rehearsal in a Manhattan church, the documentary’s music supplemented by additional tracks.” – PATRICIA MYERS/JazzTimes.

COUCH TOUR: EDDIE HENDERSON with Donald Harrison, George Cables, Gerald Cannon, and Lenny White, SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 9 SEPTEMBER 2022
Another stand alone “couch tour” for a set in real time. If the previous night’s challenging trio was rewarding albeit work, this one was a more typical end of the week of the week celebration.
Of course, I last saw EDDIE HENDERSON more than 50 years ago as part of Herbie Hancock’s glorious Mwandishi band at a classy Kansas City club. He was, with Benny Maupin and Julian Priester, part of a traditional palette of horns for Hancock to color a churning fusion rhythm section—except Buster Williams played acoustic bass masterfully and Billy Hart, as I’ve rediscovered through the streams of lockdown and beyond, still has subtle chops. So does Lenny White who also paid fusion dues with Return to Forever but contributed to last night’s success.
Henderson has a brighter tone than Jeremy Pelt and Josh Evans who have been my recent trumpet heroes. He can play with force, but his lines are rich and don’t rely on high register pyrotechnics. Still he makes for an interesting contrast with his long time partner, altoist Donald Harrison who brings a grit and New Orleans slinkiness. Henderson swings just fine but he has a different and slightly simpler relation to the beat than Harrison. Still they make a very successful team.
Henderson has released two albums for Smoke with Harrison and the immaculate Kenny Barron. Well, much as I would have loved to see Barron too, it has been too long since I have crossed streaming paths with George Cables who fed both horns rich responses—melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic—with an appealing exuberance. They did his appealingly intricate Why Not, but he/they had standards like Surrey with the Fringe On Top, Born to Be Blue, and another show tune I couldn’t place to dig into.
Straight ahead stuff but not tame, just by now elder statesment (Henderson will turn 82 this year) keeping the craft alive. Harrison and Gerald Cannon, an implacable rock on bass, are a bit younger than me, so elder statesmen age, and Cables and White are in their 70s. They still swing hard even as they are in jackets and ties with ball or thinning hair lines and not dashikis and Afros.
But Miles Davis and his immediate acolytes like Hancock didn’t let the jazz chops fall away during the heyday of fusion even if others took short cuts. Much of it is forgettable, but the players who came back from the brink continue to make a difference.
And we were all young once. I should know.

Gil Evans Out Of The Cool Rar
Out of the Cool, released in 1960, was the first recording Gil Evans issued after three straight albums with Miles Davis -- Sketches of Spain being the final one before this. Evans had learned much from Davis about improvisation, instinct, and space (the trumpeter learned plenty, too, especially about color, texture, and dynamic tension). Evans orchestrates less here, instead concentrating on the rhythm section built around Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, bassist Ron Carter, and guitarist Ray Crawford. The maestro in the piano chair also assembled a crack horn section for this date, with Ray Beckinstein, Budd Johnson, and Eddie Caine on saxophones, trombonists Jimmy Knepper, Keg Johnson, and bass trombonist Tony Studd, with Johnny Coles and Phil Sunkel on trumpet, Bill Barber on tuba, and Bob Tricarico on flute, bassoon, and piccolo. The music here is of a wondrous variety, bookended by two stellar Evans compositions in 'La Nevada,' and 'Sunken Treasure.' The middle of the record is filled out by the lovely standard 'Where Flamingos Fly,' Kurt Weill-Bertolt Brecht's 'Bilbao Song,' and George Russell's classic 'Stratusphunk.' The sonics are alternately warm, breezy, and nocturnal, especially on the 15-plus-minute opener which captures the laid-back West Coast cool jazz feel juxtaposed by the percolating, even bubbling hot rhythmic pulse of the tough streets of Las Vegas. The horns are held back for long periods in the mix and the drums pop right up front, Crawford's solo -- drenched in funky blues -- is smoking. When the trombones re-enter, they are slow and moaning, and the piccolo digs in for an in the pocket, pulsing break. Whoa.

Albums include Out of the Cool, The Individualism of Gil Evans, and The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix.
Things are brought back to the lyrical impressionism Evans is most well known for at the beginning of 'Where Flamingos Fly.' Following a four-note theme on guitar, flute, tuba, and trombone, it comes out dramatic and blue, but utterly spacious and warm. The melancholy feels like the tune 'Summertime' in the trombone melody, but shifts toward something less impressionistic and more expressionist entirely by the use of gentle dissonance by the second verse as the horns begin to ratchet things up just a bit, allowing Persip and Jones to play in the middle on a variety of percussion instruments before the tune takes on a New Orleans feel, and indeed traces much of orchestral jazz history over the course of its five minutes without breaking a sweat. 'Stratusphunk' is the most angular tune here, but Evans and company lend such an element of swing to the tune that its edges are barely experienced by the listener. For all his seriousness, there was a great deal of warmth and humor in Evans' approach to arranging. His use of the bassoon as a sound effects instrument at the beginning is one such moment emerging right out of the bass trombone. At first, the walking bassline played by Carter feels at odds with the lithe and limber horn lines which begin to assert themselves in full finger popping swing etiquette, but Carter seamlessly blends in. Again, Crawford's guitar solo in the midst of all that brass is the voice of song itself, but it's funky before Johnny Coles' fine trumpet solo ushers in an entirely new chart for the brass. The final cut, 'Sunken Treasure,' is a moody piece of noir that keeps its pulse inside the role of bass trombone and tuba. Percussion here, with maracas, is more of a coloration device, and the blues emerge from the trumpets and from Carter. It's an odd way to close a record, but its deep-night feel is something that may echo the 'cool' yet looks toward something deeper and hotter -- which is exactly what followed later with Into the Hot. This set is not only brilliant, it's fun.

Last winter an old audio biz friend of mine visited bearing a gift: a new Italian 45rpm pressing of Gil Evans' dark, brooding and oh so slinky 1960 recording of Out of the Cool originally issued in 1961 by the then new Impulse! Label created by producer Creed Taylor for parent company ABC-Paramount. The album was Impulse!

MUSIC MONDAY 爵士乐 / Juéshìyuè / Jazz
I am not good at doing these even semi-regularly.
Xi’an rapper DaBozz/大包子 (big buns) is often called “cold aunt” (冷酷阿姨) for reasons I have yet to work out. I haven’t been able to find out all that much about her or this track, but given her recent performance at the annual Shanghai Concrete & Grass Festival earlier this year, it seems she’s something of a rising star in China’s indie music scene. As you can probably figure from the name of the song, it’s an homage to jazz musicians and music, and its personal and political significance. The lyrics are very poetic, so please forgive my translation, which really can’t do her original work justice.
Read below for lyrics in simplified Chinese, pinyin, and my attempt at butchering the lyrics through lazy translation…

One wasted day, he was so despondent, but had to put on a brave face in front of others Soon all he could do was scream to vent his age, he didn’t even want to go to the bar and make a cheap but glamorous encounter This time all we need is some music
Jazz’s played on, the cells are awakened It plays Miles Davis’ “Birth of the Cool” with Gil Evans Piano and trumpet, breathe in the air of the pleasant rhythm  Hot coffee’s made palatable by cold jazz Relax and chill, this is just one kind of jazz
The temptation of jazz, you swallow your spit  Now you’re enveloped in the strong rhythm This music’s far from making an impact on your soul But it’s an intoxicating rebellion
You choose to smoke while listening to Armstrong’s howling  Or to ferment in the sadness of a Holiday song Chet Baker’s lugubrious, romantic tone Stan Getz’s rare cheerful struggle and laughter
Ornette Coleman’s strange beauty  Albert Ayler’s experimental sections Norah Jones sings so lazily John Coltrane has you in awe of the turbulent surge
You decide to return and release yr soul  You nod your head to the rhythm as the big band plays  Or enjoy the flicker of the improvisation of a remarkable and original piece Ragtime ,blues are the roots New Orleans , Dixieland , Chicago , Bebop hardbop Swing cool Fusion modern Free loft and more
This is what jazz is, open up your soul  The beat’s confused and complex, the tune’s hard to determine This is the freedom of jazz, to repeatedly pull you out of your body to wander in boundless space This is jazz , it belongs to night, da second name’s black , let’s take a nightfly This is jazz ,rises n falls ,running in the fog , finds new roads and then lost
Reason and hallucination surrender to one another, pause a while to turn the human world into a paradise   Well-dressed people use it to fabricate some kind of high-end atmosphere, a token to show unconventional taste  But we know that jazz is the spirit of freedom Tradesmen who don’t play a single note don’t rely on inertia to exist It originated in a depraved life as if drunk or dreaming Black people’s emotions, warm and cool, desire and relief SO Listening to jazz doesn’t require any explanation  100 kinds of emotion strike directly deep down in your heart It’s a hallucination, it’s a train, it’s a swirling eddy too deep to see or to know Jazz has is already a collection of everything I want About spirituality and confusion, about moments and collisions  Truthful language can’t describe it (Duke) Ellington said jazz is a dream!

Originally opened in 1955, Café Carlyle is New York City's bastion of classic cabaret entertainment, a place where audiences experience exceptional performers at close range in an exceedingly elegant setting. Since composer Richard Rodgers moved in as The Carlyle's first tenant, music has been an essential part of The Carlyle experience. No place is that more evident than in the Café Carlyle.
Café Carlyle is known for talents including Woody Allen, who regularly appears on Monday evenings to play with The Eddy Davis New Orleans jazz band. For three decades, Café Carlyle was synonymous with the legendary Bobby Short, who thrilled sell-out crowds for 36 years. His spirit lives on through the music at Café Carlyle.
Continuing the tradition of the 1930s supper club, Café Carlyle features original murals created by French artist Marcel Vertès, the Oscar-winning art director of the 1952 Moulin Rouge.

Empire State of Mind
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Tumblr media
MetroCard - must buy.
Tumblr media
🍸 The Top of the Standart -
Лучшие бары #4 The Nomad, #15 Attaboy, #16 Dead Rabbit и #41 BlackTail остаются на следующий раз вместе с The Campbell в помещении бывших офисов высокопоставленных сотрудников Grand Central, Katana Kitten, George Washington Bar, и руфтопами SixtyFive, Bar 54, 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar, The Press Lounge и Pod39.⠀⠀⠀
Tumblr media
Burger & Lobster.
Taboonette.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The Phantom of the Opera
The Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band в старейшем Cafe Carlyle.
В общем, я однозначно хочу повторить и Sleep No More с уже имеющимися вводными, и сходить на еще один - Then She Fell. Стоимость билетов на Sleep No More - от $80 до $120, на When She Fell - от $125 до $200.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Tumblr media
The New York Public Library
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Мне хотелось подняться на Top of The Rock, зайти в Grand Central Terminal, пройтись по Times Square, прогуляться по High Line, увидеть дом из сериала F.R.I.E.N.D.S, посмотреть на новенький The Vessel (бесплатно, по регистрации) и Brooklyn Bridge.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
TO NOTE

PR: Jean-Michel Bernard Plays Lalo Schifrin
Tumblr media
VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE JEAN-MICHEL BERNARD PLAYS LALO SCHIFRIN Featuring Performances Of New Arrangements of Schifrin’s Beloved Themes, Played by Acclaimed Pianist/Composer Jean-Michel Bernard (September 18, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA) – The result of a concert performed by Jean-Michel Bernard celebrating the music of legendary composer Lalo Schifrin at the 2016 La Baule Film Music Festival in France, Varèse Sarabande will release a new studio recording of JEAN-MICHEL BERNARD PLAYS LALO SCHIFRIN digitally and on CD October 6, 2017.  The album features three piano duets performed by Bernard with Schifrin himself! In addition to this wonderful release, Varèse Sarabande, together with Musicians at Play and Music Fund Los Angeles, will be celebrating the 85th birthday of Schifrin with a special concert on October 7th in Los Angeles, at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale (concert details: http://bit.ly/2h8cyXO). Lalo Schifrin calls Jean-Michel Bernard his ‘soul brother.’  The two first met over 25 years ago, but it wasn’t until they were reacquainted in 2016 that they would strike up a musical friendship.  Schifrin was the guest of honor at the 2016 La Baule Film Music Festival.  Bernard was asked to give a tribute concert to celebrate the Maestro, and re-orchestrated Lalo’s themes for the performance.  Though not originally scheduled to – Bernard invited Lalo to join him on stage and the two played 35 minutes of amazing improvisations, culminating in Schifrin’s beloved “Mission: Impossible”.
“After a Dirty Harry Blues duo with Pierre Boussaguet, he launched into a wild piano duel with Jean-Michel on Happy Birthday—it really was Boussaguet's birthday—before ending on a white-hot reprise of Mission: Impossible… thirty-five minutes later!” described the French journalist Stéphane Lerouge. “The audience, fully aware that they had witnessed a historic happening, gave them a standing ovation that stopped the clock.” Inspired by the music of Schifrin and determined to recreate the historic moment by recording his arrangements for this album, Jean-Michel began recording this album – featuring Lalo’s beloved music from Mannix, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, The Cat, the Dirty Harry Suite (featuring composer – and Clint’s son – Kyle Eastwood on electric bass), plus a melodic trip to Lalo’s roots with pieces like Lalo’s Bossa Nova and Tango Del Atardecer. After an initial recording session in France, Lalo invited Jean-Michel to Los Angeles to record a series of duets at the legendary Capitol Studios where Lalo would join him for three pieces.   “Jean-Michel reserved two pieces for him [Lalo], each for two pianos: Chano (originally written for Gillespie), and a lengthy introduction to The Plot, like some fantasy joust nourished on jubilant quotes,” wrote Lerouge. “He also built up an original suite combining Recuerdos from Che! (with a baguala rhythm) and the love theme from The Four Musketeers in Renaissance style, forming a made-to-measure piece for Sara Andon, a stunning New World classical flautist. These three piano duets, performed by Lalo and Jean-Michel, can be heard on this album: Introduction to The Plot, Chano, and The Cheketeers Suite.” Take a musical adventure with this delightful new recording JEAN-MICHEL BERNARD PLAYS LALO SCHIFRIN.  Perhaps Schifrin himself summed it up best, "In La Baule, it was a magnificent child. From now on, it's an adult." Track Listing 1. Mannix 2. Bullitt 3. Cool Hand Luke 4. Dirty Harry Suite 5. Lalo's Bossa Nova 6. Mission: Impossible 7. That Night 8. Tango Del Atardecer 9. The Cat 10. When he was 14, he was awarded first place at the Bordeaux Conservatory and later graduated from the Paris ‘Ecole Normale de Musique’. At 19, he recorded with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, whilst pursuing a career as a jazz musician and performing with prominent jazz artists including Wild Bill Davis, Jimmy Woode (Duke Ellington’s bassist) and Eddie Davis. From 1987 to 1991 he worked as musical director and conductor of the successful radio show “L’Oreille en Coin” on National Pubic Radio France Inter. Between 2000 and 2003, he performed with the Ray Charles Quartet on the European and Australian tours as organist and conductor, “this guy is a genius, he is extraordinary” Ray used to say concerning Jean-Michel Bernard. He also scored many documentaries and commercials during the 90’s.  His career as a composer began with animated films, followed by collaborations with masters such as Lalo Schifrin and Ennio Morricone. He frequently works with director Michel Gondry and has composed songs and scores for films including Human Nature and The Science of Sleep, which screened at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals. He was nominated for the World Soundtrack Awards in 2007 as Discovery of the Year and won the France Musique/UCMF award at the Cannes Film Festival the same year. In 2008 he scored the music for Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind, Cash by Eric Besnard, and A Pain in the Ass by Francis Veber. The same day Be Kind Rewind was shown at the Sundance Festival, Jean-Michel Bernard performed alongside rapper/singer Mos Def and Gondry, an avid drummer. The following year, the Cannes Film Festival invited him to represent France in the film music concert program. He also received an award for his achievement outside of his native country from the European Union of Film Music Composers (UCMF) and was appointed as sound designer for both HBO’s channel and website. He has collaborated with French actress and director Fanny Ardant on two of her films Chimères Absentes and Cadences Obstinées starring Gerard Depardieu and worked on Academy Award winning Hugo by Martin Scorsese. He scored the music of Love Punch by Joel Hopkins starring Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson, Love at First Child by Anne Giafferi and Money by Georgian director Gela Babluani. Bernard has conducted master classes at the Cannes Film Festival as well as in Montreal, Angers, La Rochelle, Krakow, Cologne and in Aubagne, where he performed a live version of “Jazz For Dogs”, an album co-created with Kimiko Ono and featuring a number of prestigious guests including Fanny Ardant, Francis Lai and Laurent Korcia. In 2014, Jean-Michel Bernard began teaching film music classes at the Paris Conservatory and was guest of honor with Michael Giacchino at the Audi Talent Awards in Paris with the Paris Symphonic Orchestra, at Braunschweig Festival and at Soundtrack Cologne Festival. He scored “Terra”, a contemporary dance project which premiered at the Coronet in London in March 2016 and participated as composer, arranger and performer on The Avalanches long-awaited second album Wildflower. His most recent project is an album celebrating the legendary Lalo Schifrin entitled Jean-Michel Bernard plays Lalo Schifrin which includes 3 piano duets with the master himself. The album will be released in 2017 with concerts in Los Angeles, Paris, and Japan, at the Tokyo Blue Note Jazz Festival. "To me it is amazing that I found a real 'soul brother' in the sum of his expressions (composing, conducting, performing, etc.). I cannot find words to reflect my admiration for his genius, a real miracle because he is my double." (Lalo Schifrin). ABOUT LALO SCHIFRIN Lalo Schifrin is a true Renaissance man. As a pianist, composer and conductor, he is equally at home conducting a symphony orchestra, performing at an international jazz festival, scoring a film or television show, or creating works for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the London Philharmonic and even The Sultan of Oman. As a young man in his native Argentina, Lalo Schifrin received classical training in music, and also studied law. He came from a musical family, and his father, Luis Schifrin, was the concertmaster of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires at the Teatro Colon. Lalo Schifrin continued his formal music education at the Paris Conservatory during the early 1950’s. Simultaneously, he became a professional jazz pianist, composer and arranger, playing and recording in Europe. When Schifrin returned to Buenos Aires in the mid 1950’s, he formed his own big concert band. It was during a performance of this band that Dizzy Gillespie heard Schifrin play and asked him to become his pianist and arranger. In 1958, Schifrin moved to the United States and thus began a remarkable career. His music is a synthesis of traditional and twentieth-century techniques, and his early love for jazz and rhythm are strong attributes of his style. “Invocations,” “Concerto for Double Bass,” “Piano Concertos No. 1 and No. 2,” “Pulsations,” “Tropicos,” “La Nouvelle Orleans,” and “Resonances” are examples of this tendency to juxtapose universal thoughts with a kind of elaborated primitivism. In the classical composition field, Schifrin has more than 60 works. To date, Lalo Schifrin has written over 100 film and television scores including Mission Impossible, Mannix, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, Amityville Horror, four of the Dirty Harry films, and more recently Abominable and the Rush Hour trilogy.  Lalo Schifrin has now won five Grammys® (twenty-two nominations), one Cable ACE Award, and six Academy Award® nominations (for Cool Hand Luke, The Fox, Voyage of the Damned, The Amityville Horror, The Competition, and The Sting II).  His longtime involvement in both the jazz and symphonic worlds came together in 1993 as pianist and conductor for his on-going series of “Jazz Meets the Symphony” recordings.
