A Mountain Goats song that is, on its face, about cultivating sweet potato vine to feed a herd of wild deer: *exists*
The Mountain Goats Wiki entry > Comments by John Darnielle About this Song section:
“This song is about killing a man in Iowa City in 1993…take it away Peter.” — 2006 - 10 - 17 - Taft Ballroom - Cincinnati, OH

“When I was 14 I slammed my index finger in the rear passenger door of a 1972 Ford Galaxie and I’ll be terribly honest that hurt like a motherfucker.” — 2019 - 5 - 8 - Columbus Theatre - Providence, RI

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Day Two, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Calif., Oct. 5, 2024
It was strictly bluegrass to kick off Day Two of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass as the Dry Branch Fire Squad offered stories about HSB founder Warren Hellman and songs of the Civil War and death and Jesus alongside instrumentals on the Banjo stage. There were no amps during the day-opening set that found the quartet playing and singing into shared mics and telling slow-to-develop tales with good humor.
Later in the day, Moonalice would grace the Towers of Gold audience with the second “White Rabbit” of the festival - following Molly Tuttle’s Oct. 4 version - and Tuttle would return with Golden Highway to back Steve Earle for a set that included a surprise appearance from Emmylou Harris on “Goodbye” and a rare festival encore of “This Land is Your Land” to end Oct. 5 in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
Tumblr media
As a warm morning turned to a sweltering afternoon that found festivalgoers gathering in shady areas and leaving sun-drenched stretches of grass empty, Jobi Riccio and her rhythm section created a stripped-back, Hejira-era Joni Mitchell/Harris hybrid for the Rooster-farians, as the emcee called those gathered at Rooster stage. Playing during Buddy Miller’s daylong Cavalcade of Stars, Riccio surely earned some new fans.
Tumblr media
Showcasing their new How to Make Mistakes LP, Fruition entertained the Swan stage shade-seekers as the quintet with multiple lead singers and multi-instrumentalist members took a a Bandian approach to 21st-century Americana with faux-blood harmonies buttressing ballads like “Still on My Mind.”
Tumblr media
Following immediately on the adjacent Towers of Gold, Moonalice - with drummer John Molo, guitarist Barry Sless, singer Lester Chambers, bassist Pete Sears and others - turned in a hugely entertaining and soulful set that included the front-line trio of female vocalists leading the large band through such covers as Marvin Gaye’s “You’re all I Need to Get By” the Grateful Dead’s “Bird Song,” “(Turn on Your) Lovelight” and the aforementioned Airplane number.
Tumblr media
Back on the Rooster for the ongoing Cavalcade, former Carolina Chocolate Drop Dom Flemons played bones, harmonica, guitar and quills on traditional songs to demonstrate what being an American Songster is all about. As he performed Elizabeth Cotten’s “Freight Train,” on guitar and “Brown Skinned Girl” on harmonica, Flemons proved himself the rare solo-acoustic performer who could hold a field full of festivalgoers in rapt (near) silence.
Tumblr media
But he also had assistance from the Red Dirt Boys - who’d previously played a rich-gumbo show of their own - on original country and western songs from Traveling Wildfire and an old-timey rendition of “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad,” as he danced with rubbery legs of joy. A couple of false starts added to the spontaneous nature of this surprise mini-set.
Tumblr media
Carlene Carter provided midafternoon lunchtime country music as the Sound Biteses prepared for Mavis Staples on the Banjo. And she did not disappoint, cooling down the afternoon with such hopeful numbers as “I’m Just Another Soldier,” “Handwriting on the Wall” “Respect Yourself” and “Freedom Highway” as she declared the healing power of music and her gruff, joyful laugh.
Tumblr media
“We come to bring you some joy, some happiness, some inspiration - we want you to feel good,” Staples said.
And she made people feel just that though it was disheartening to see the 85-year-old American treasure needing to sit during a portion of her show, which she did not do in Ohio several months ago.
Tumblr media
Earle, Tuttle & Golden Highway ended the day with 75 minutes - HSB’s longest performance - and opened with “Warren Hellman’s Banjo.” The show was a little under-rehearsed but a prime example of live music without a net with songs from the Del McCoury-Earle joint the Mountain, a cover of Little Feat’s “Willin’” and perhaps the most-emphatic version of “Copperhead Road” to date.
Tumblr media
“This turned out exactly the way I wanted it to,” an exuberant Earle said with a comment that summed up Mr. and Mrs. Sound Bites’ day perfectly.

💭 pleeeease syb thoughts and opinions on jessie:3
alfjasdfl;k doing first impressions and then a mid-reaping thought because i can't resist
first impression
Sybille is immediately intrigued by anyone who wasn't in the service who prefers to be referred to by their surname. Rook is new to the sheriff's department -- had only been there a few weeks before Sybille had shaken Earl's hand and accepted the job offer.
Rook smacks loudly away at her gum and her eyes raise as Sybille exits Earl's office and enters the bullpen. She kicks her chair into a spin to swivel towards her as she passes. "Hired on the spot, huh?" She pulls an exaggerated grimace when Sybille nods. "Eesh. Red flag."
Sybille cocks a brow. "That a commentary on the department or an assessment of me?"
Rook twirls her ponytail around her finger and gives a half-hearted shrug. She then blows a bubble that's nearly the size of her head. When it pops, she looks surprised to find Sybille still standing at her desk, awaiting an answer. But instead of giving her one, she changes the subject. "You fish?"
Childish is the first thing that comes to Sybille's mind to describe her. Followed immediately by evasive. She's struck with the urge to dissect her and figure out what makes her tick. She quirks a smile. "Worked on a boat for a while down in New Orleans. Know any good spots?"
most recent thought
Every muscle in Sybille's body aches. She has no idea how much time has passed since Jacob's Chosen got the drop on her. All she knows is that she spent longer than usual in the Red Place and had to claw her way out from underneath a pile of corpses. She hadn't even bothered washing. She just shambled her way from the mountains back into the valley because jesus fucking christ, she needs a drink.
Mary May has a shot glass full of whiskey with the bottle set beside it before she even makes it to the counter. She downs it and sits on one of the bar stools. The loud creak that sounds in the empty bar is either from the wood or her bones and she's not entirely sure which.
With a sympathetic smile and gentle tap of her hand against the counter, Mary May says, "Just holler if you need anythin'."
Sybille grunts and nods, not bothering with the shot glass and drinking straight from the bottle.
Her peace and quiet doesn't last much longer than ten minutes. The door to the Spread Eagle slams open, followed immediately by an all too familiar nasally and grating voice. "Hey, Mary May I need more -- holy fuck, Syb you look like shit!"
Both Sybille and Mary May let out a prolonged exasperated groan.

..."Lance Wallnau’s book, “God’s Chaos Candidate” played a significant role in solidifying evangelical support for Donald Trump in 2016, brushing aside concerns about his obvious lack of morality.
Paula White-Cain gave the invocation at Trump’s inauguration in 2017, at his re-election campaign kick-off in 2019 and his Jan. 6, 2021, pre-insurrection rally. On the second occasion, she gave what experts describe as a ‘spiritual warfare’ prayer: “Let every demonic network that is aligned itself against the purpose, against the calling of President Trump, let it be broken, let it be torn down in the name of Jesus.”
Dutch Sheets engaged in a swing-state “prayer and prophecy tour” after Joe Biden’s election in November 2020, playing a leading role in building religious support for the Jan. 6 insurrection, in coordination with Trump’s White House.
All three are prominent members of a rapidly-growing, anti-democratic religious movement known as the New Apostolic Reformation, which few Americans have heard of, except in passing or by way of heated denials. But a new book from Canadian scholar André Gagné, “American Evangelicals for Trump: Dominion, Spiritual Warfare, and the End Times,” could change that, as the NAR seems poised to play an even bigger political role in 2024.
“Too many of the larger public, and too many who report news, know little about this movement,” said John Dorhauer, recently retired general minister and president of the United Church of Christ, via email. “The trap one must avoid in writing about this subject and reporting on the movement is to do so in a way that comes across as credible without sounding like a conspiracy theorist. The truth is you are in fact writing about a conspiracy. Because of that, large swaths of the American public are just predisposed to dismiss this as too far-fetched to take seriously.”
Gagné’s book is significant, Dorhauer said, because he clarifies and differentiates “various ideologies, theologies and end-game scenarios” in ways particularly helpful to “those of us looking to think strategically about how to offset the damage to our democracy.”
NAR, Clarkson explained, is hard to understand because it is “constantly changing, [and] has factions in tension with one another. … They are wily because they are worried that the rest of society will figure out who they are and what they are up to.”
The "most radical change" since the Protestant Reformation
Arguably the greatest strength of Gagné’s book is its “focus on how [NAR] adherents speak of their beliefs and practices,” as he describes it, providing a coherent, objective record that can that’s not an outsider’s interpretation — thus evading an objection that religious conservatives have invoked for decades when subject to unwanted scrutiny. This is reflected both in the book’s origin and in its crucial explanation of the NAR, which C. Peter Wagner, who coined the term, described as “the most radical change in how churches operate since the Protestant Reformation.”
Dominion theology, "victorious eschatology" and the Seven Mountain Mandate
When it comes to theology, Gagné focuses on the “idea of wanting to establish the kingdom of God on earth, the notion of dominion,” a thread long present in evangelical Christianity, but largely more as an aspiration than a master plan, as it is for the NAR. “Wagner was clear on what had influenced him in terms of dominion theology,” Gagné said, and specifically referenced Calvinist philosopher and theologian R.J. Rushdoony, the founder of what is known as “Christian Reconstruction.” (See Julie Ingersoll’s book "Building God's Kingdom: Inside the World of Christian Reconstructionism,” and a Salon interview.)
Another important influence was onetime evangelical bishop Earl Paulk, who “popularized a teaching that is called ‘kingdom now,’” Gagné said, which claimed that “Christ in us must take dominion over the earth.... The next move of God cannot occur until Christ in us takes dominion.”
It’s worth noting here that the dominionist belief in dramatically expanding Christians’ power over the secular world is inherently in conflict with previously more popular evangelical beliefs that the sinful world should be left behind, as reflected in the popular “Left Behind” novel series. In contrast, Gagné said, “Wagner had a view which is called ‘victorious eschatology,” where he links that idea to dominion theology.” He quotes Wagner saying, “We no longer accept the idea that society will get worse and worse, because we now believe God’s mandate is to transform society, so it gets better and better.”

Days like these were known to be particularly slow with the rain coming down in sheets, the wind tossing the trees gently along the skyline visible from her dirty office window, the lull of typing from the other office, and the pattering of water along the tin roof. It was enough to almost put someone to sleep, but the semi-newly appointed Deputy Sheriff Marion had more than several stacked reports due, and trying to finish them was seemingly a daunting task in and of itself. She despised paperwork- and sometimes it was unfortunately reflected in her work with sloppy signatures and hastily scribbled notes. Nobody was perfect, right?  Thumbing over a few different pages, she soon tosses the stack that was in her hands onto the worn desk with an exasperated sigh and a quick pinch of the ridge of her nose, eyes screwing shut as that sigh sharpens into a groan. The wet scent of dirt and the humid air was forbidding and reminded her of home perhaps a little bit too much. What a miserable day, right? And to think she had plans to barbecue tonight, that wasn't happening. Even with everything happening in Hope County, she still found ways to throw herself a pity party. People were dying, being maimed and tortured and killed and skinned alive and left as roadkill- and here she was, quietly bitching to herself about the fact she'd have to grab something else.
Settling back into her chair and humming, Marion makes quick work of tidying up her messy black hair into a clip and stares fruitlessly out the window- shit. Though, she was looking forward to those steaks. The wooden chair that probably had been in this building since the 70s creaks gently under her weight as she rocks back and forth- as far as the old lacquered mess would allow her. Hope County could have been a wonderful place to live if it weren't for this supposed cult. A quaint community tucked away in the mountains and the valleys that hugged it were just as beautiful as their older and greater counterparts. A truly magnificent place to be if you were sitting with the cool kids, so to speak. Earl had never spoken fondly of Eden's Gate, and she knew it was because of this outlandishly fucked up shit they as a whole were pulling, but there was something deep in her bones that couldn't help but resonate with the message...  Maybe it was being born in Louisiana and being run over the coals with televangelism and billboards streaming for miles preaching about Jesus and how he alone is the path to salvation, how the church was the one to intervene in her youth with the abuse and yet held the hand of the abuser to further the agenda. It was all very confusing to her growing up.   Everything, she thought, would tell itself in time-- but time was a cruel mistress and she was impatient. The wind picks up outside, howling past the trees and picking up debris in its wake- a trashcan falling over unceremoniously outside the window made her jump slightly and shake her head-- However... The unmistakable electronic *Ding* from the front of the building hovers in the air, the door closing back up the vacuum bubble that was the Sherriff's office...  Something in the air changes, and Marion finds herself straightening in her seat and turning back to the desk- trying to make herself look busy and not like she's just idling. Heavy boot steps echo down the short hallway, and soon there is a hand attaching itself to the brass knob on her office door, and its screaming hinges gave way to a stranger.
When the man entered, her whole body felt like it had taken a screenshot. There was a cause of the sudden shift in the building's air.
Almost instinctively, Marion reaches out and firmly shakes his hand; He has a remarkable grip, and remarkable scars- a remarkable look about him altogether, however, she keeps herself steady and nods, a slightly concerned smile wavering over her cleft features. "Oh, so you're the guy huh? Nice to meetcha', Jacob. Not gonna lie, I'm not used to having a welcomin' party, but I appreciate it... Also not sure how my boss is gonna feel either, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, yeah?" Her swampy drawl hangs heavy in the air like the humidity on their skin, it could tell a million stories of bayou dreams and warm your bones like bourbon. "...I gotta know, though... Why come on out here to say hello? Couldn't possibly be southern hospitality~" Marion laughs- it's all in good fun, she feels safe in her office, whether or not this bear of a man was in the vicinity. She was seemingly taking her chances, willing to gamble on the interaction that just decided to pop up like a fresh spring daisy.
DESTINY
[ a lil starter for @atallephoculary ]
In the Montana mountains, a rainy morning paints the landscape in shades of gray and green. Mist flowing in the rugged peaks as raindrops dance off the pine leaves, creating a soothing symphony. Puddles form, reflecting the dreary sky, while streams began to flow from the rocks with newfound vigor across the roadways, mud puddles just awaiting a victim to step in them. Despite the downpour, there's an undeniable beauty, a resilience that defines mountain life. It was normal for the eldest Seed brother to rise earlier than the sun and commence his duties.
In the quiet solitude of his mountain home, Jacob stirred reluctantly from his sleep. With a heavy sigh, he reluctantly opened his eyes, greeted not by the warmth of the sun, but by the dim light filtering through the clouded sky. Echoes of gunfire and the distant rumble of explosions seemed to reverberate in the stillness of the morning, a haunting reminder of the past he could never fully escape.
Pulling himself from the embrace of his bed, Jacob moved with a stiffness bred from old injuries and unspoken traumas. The familiar ache in his bones served as a constant reminder of the price he had paid for his years of service, not to mention the scarred tissue to add insult to the injury. With each step, he traversed the familiar terrain of his home, the solitude of the mountains offering both solace and isolation. Outside, the world awaited, but within the confines of his sanctuary, Jacob found himself reluctant to face the day ahead, for him, waking up was not a cause for celebration, but rather a reminder of the battles he still fought within himself. Yet, somehow he managed to pull himself up every day to heed the wishes of his beloved brother and prophet Joseph, something he would be grateful for, a purpose.
After a cup of coffee in the quiet of his kitchen, he then decided to check his phone. It was a text from a few of the cultists who had done reconnaissance on the police station, it would seem the new deputy sheriff was settled in nicely. A clank of his coffee mug on the marble countertop, he slid it aside as he stood and grabbed his coat. It was about time he was able to put a name to the face, there had been rumors of her. tenacious, stubborn and allegedly scary, which only intrigued him that much more. Puddled mud splashed around Jacob’s military boots, the sludging trail to his truck wasn’t unfamiliar to him and given the circumstances he had been through in life, mud was hardly as appalling to him as most.
The drive was calming, the pitter patter of raindrops beaming against his windshield in different directions as he picked up speed. There was a surrealness to driving in the rain, something he always looked forward to when it came to spring. It was easy to get lost in it, which made the drive the drive seem shorter than it was, and now he arrived at the sheriff station. Usually, when it would rain, a normal person would park close to the building but… Jacob didn’t. instead, he parked in the corner of the lot and began his walk to the main entrance. Each raindrop felt like heaven, the heat however was only threatening humidity. With each step, the puddles splashed under the power of his weight against the concrete, the water rinsing his previously mudded boots that now left a sleek shine, almost as if they were new but from the scuffs it was clear they’d been abused.
The door swung open briefly to allow him to step in, a cautious gaze around the office told him that it was a slow day, but without breaking his stride, he began to walk further into the building while whipping both of his hands at the wrist to rid it of stray water droplets. “I’m looking for Marion Fuller.” When he spoke, each word reverberated with richness and depth, carrying a weight that demanded attention, which he got. It wasn’t uncommon for the locals to shake like leaves when it came to Jacob, in the dim light of the room, the intimidating figure stood like a colossus, but it wasn't just his physical presence that was made them look away; it was the faint yet unmistakable burn scars that marred a quarter of his face, trailing down his neck and disappearing beneath the collar of his shirt. They spoke of a past marked by fire and pain, leaving behind a haunting reminder of battles fought and wounds endured. The secretary, who Jacob had stood before gestured to the door he would need to go through, the shakiness in her hand only caused a faint smile to appear beneath his scruffy beard.
The sound of his footsteps thundered through the seemingly quiet building, it was eerily quiet but of course it was early and there wasn’t too much noise. The door however, seemed to creak open so painfully loud that a wince formed on his face as he stepped through. His eyes landed on the deputy, which he was shocked she wasn’t older. “huh” he slipped out.
Most criminals would be shaken by standing in front of authority, but Jacob stood mere feet away from the newly appointed sheriff deputy unphased and seemingly confrontational, however he instead offered his hand. “Miss Fuller, my name is Jacob Seed. I’d like to formally introduce myself and let you know that as head of security for Eden’s Gate, if you need anything, I’m the one to come to.” Although innocent enough, there's a coldness to his tone, a calculated precision that leaves no doubt as to the subtly of his threat if it were to be looked for. It's the voice of someone who knows how to wield intimidation, using it to instill fear and assert dominance without needing to raise his voice.
