Romeo and Video
ROMEO & JULIET The Duke of York’s Theatre, London, Thursday 27th June 2024 The best production of this play I’ve ever seen was many years ago. Six actors performing in the grounds of Sudeley Castle, the audience on blankets, snacking from picnic hampers. The only liberties taken with the text were to facilitate the doubling-trebling-quadrupling of roles. There was live music and singing. …

My Pop Life #146 : Taxi Driver - Bernard Herrmann
My Pop Life #146 : Taxi Driver – Bernard Herrmann
Taxi Driver – Bernard Herrmann
*
I was already deeply in love with the cinema on July 5th 1976. The day after a surreal and wonderful bicentennial Disneyland experience where Simon and I actually saw The Monkees live (see My Pop Life #168 Pleasant Valley Sunday) we are taken into Hollywood by Nick and his sister Caroline to see the film Taxi Driver. Neither my diary nor my memory tells me the…

Blowing The Whistle
AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE Duke of York’s Theatre, London, Thursday 22nd February 2024 Henrik Ibsen’s play from 1882 is brought kicking and swearing into the 21st century in this new adaptation by Florian Borchmeyer and director Thomas Ostermeier. What’s wrong, you might think, with a straight translation from the original Norwegian performed in late Victorian attire, and leaving us to draw our…

Flooded with Meaning
ROSMERSHOLM
Duke of York’s Theatre, London, Saturday 13th July, 2019
Duncan Macmillan’s new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s 1886 play is flooded with pertinence. Never mind nineteenth century Norway, many of the lines come across as direct commentary on the state of our nation today, eliciting wry laughter from the audience. Ibsen-Macmillan make satirical quips, mainly through the mouthpiece of…

Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour @ The Duke of York's Theatre
I loved the fantastic #OurLadies of Perpetual Succour @ the Duke of York's!
Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour follows six Scottish, Catholic schoolgirls who are on a trip to compete in a choir competition. Lee Hall’s adaptation of Alan Warner’s novel ‘The Sopranos’ is a fantastically funny and empowering play about a female friendship group, not once does it feel patronising, demeaning or ridiculing towards the six girls. Vicky Featherstone directs a brilliant group of…
