Going through some of my Currently-Paused WIPs for fun, and. Hmmm. HMMMMMMMMM.

i'm always always always curious about your magnus and toki dynamic because it seems so fleshed-out and lovingly considered. can you talk a bit about how you write their relationship? :D and what is the appeal of them specifically that made you ship it and start writing it?

Oh, wow. There is just now way I’ll be able to answer this to the extent i want, but I’ll give you a brief intro???

I’ll be working backwards with this one. 

what is the appeal of them specifically that made you ship it and start writing it?

Specifically? I really like that they’re more a reflection of one another, with Magnus being a massive “warning/”what if?”” for Toki, if he was denied the same opportunities for love and/or success, kicked out of the band, etc.. They share a lot of similarities, both good and bad, so there’s also a potential “invest now and guarantee a better tomorrow” that both men, to some extent, are aware of. The fact that Toki is also objectively far from perfect also helps. I know with some ships, it’s not always clear that both characters have problems, and I know there are ships where it’s mainly one person helping the other. I think for this ship, it’s not about redeeming one character here, it’s about two characters trying to get past various obstacles and becoming better for it. To continue that reflecting theme, everything that Toki does for Magnus can be returned later, ranging from Magnus eventually taking care of Toki post G2, and even bringing Toki back to life.  It’s the fact that they’re one in the same, it makes it so interesting and fun to write! 

I know, with the basic power dynamic within the canon universe, not to mention established characteristics clearly stated in the show, it means that a lot of the burden is going to be on Toki using his resources to help Magnus first. I kinda dig it. Give power of (emotional/mental) healing to Toki, and make the god of death a savior. Personally, there’s a lot of really nice, untapped worship material here that I definitely want to explore. Or, you can. I definitely wouldn't mind.

Thank you!! Well, this is going to be long, but I’ll try to keep it...kinda shortish? (In order at the very least.) 

To begin, I know someone who does live with mental illness, and over the course of our six year friendship, have experienced a lot of ups and downs. But we’ve been friends for six years, and looking at it as a whole, it’s crazy to see how much they’ve improved compared to when they first emailed me a billion years ago. But things weren’t always as good as they are now, and these things took time to get to that point. A lot of the things Toki’s said to Magnus aren’t too far from some of the things I’ve suggested to them, and some of the really messed up things Magnus has thought or said regarding himself, his mood swings, shifting attitude towards Toki, that’s all based on real moments, feelings and arguments. 

I think we agreed there were stages to this relationship, and mine are pretty much based on a combination of what I experienced, plus what I realistically think these two would go through. Since everything is, to some extent, planned out, and because I have a somewhat visible end goal in sight (already hinted at in other fics), it makes writing the harder parts leading up to it easier, and makes pulling memories and old emotions all the more fruitful. 

So there are four stages in their relationship, and when I write I try to figure where it's taking place. I’m not going into the nitty gritty, but if you want more I can elaborate. They are the following: 

Codependent stage: I legitimately think the first stage would be a codependent one. At this stage, Magnus cannot refuse Toki’s attention. It’s partly out of guilt, partly because Toki’s one of the few constants in his life, one of the few people providing him attention and with his illness, it’s some he craves. He wants attention without having to expose himself too much, and Toki’s providing just that. In turn, Toki receives validation and attention, something we know he wants from others. Neither want to talk about DR because they’re scared, and they both secretly hope the other will do it for him, but also dread it. Magnus is afraid that once the talk happens, things will “move on,” and he loses Toki, and Toki’s afraid he’ll fear Magnus again, and that everything everyone said about him is true. 

Communicative 1: The second stage really is just about communication, but it’s also the longest stage, which is why I break it into two. It’s  Magnus and Toki coming to terms with what happened, taking their time out of fear of what will come next, and facing that cathartic, but frightening sense of relief when they realize they don’t hate one another, and that are still bearings to their relationship. Toki now has evidence Magnus feels bad and cares about him, likes him for the joy it brings in his life, so there’s more incentive to return, even if it means asking more questions and getting painful answers. And Magnus now knows Toki will not leave him (for now), and starts to open up more, starting with things he thinks will continue keeping Toki around, then eventually moving on to other personal aspects of his life. 

Communicative 2: Magnus starts picking up slack, and Toki can start easing back with bearing the emotional/mental burdens. Magnus begins to share personal information he normally wouldn't, and Toki starts to feel more confident as his hard work starts to take form in Magnus being kinder, trying to stick with a plan regarding his mental health, creating goals and listening to Toki’s advice. Towards the later end, Magnus starts picking up on Toki’s issues more, and begins asking about them and slowly adjusting to avoid those triggers (Toki’s an alcoholic, has Panic Disorder and suffers from Depression). Eventually, guilt ceases to be the reason they’re together. 

Equilibrium: Magnus is regularly taking care of himself without needing to be reminded, and is now looking after Toki. Magnus CAN take care of Toki when needed, and can successfully put his own thoughts aside to help another person. Post G2 Magnus repays Toki back and basically takes care of him in the similar manner Toki did before. At various times during this stage Magnus believes Toki will never leave him, but considering his age chances are the doubt  will never vanish, only subdued when it arises. Toki eventually heals from some of his past traumas, beats depression, but still struggles with nightmares and panic attacks, though they are few and far between. They take care of each other.

Other than that, I just think these two have a fascinating dynamic past hero/villain because of their shared history. Smut would be great (maybe guilty pleasure hook-ups that they both promise themselves won't happen again) but is by no means a must. Emotional intimacy is definitely the priority here.

This continues for a while with neither of them outright saying anything, until it either hilariously or sadly implodes around Christmas, and they slow the fuck down and just hold hands. Ending is also up to you but do have a happy one! Sex is nice but not necessary, whatever works best for the plot, and fluff is always always appreciated! Any side characters or ships will also work, but it would be hilarious to fit in King giving horrible advice somewhere.

1. Which Fallout game are they from?       New Vegas // Originally from Four, changed due to preference and ease of access.

2. Which factions did they join and which did they destroy? Why?       If he had to pick, he would be independent. Definitely up for destroying the Legion, although despite his dislike and suspicion of the NCR he wouldn't act so readily to get rid of them. The Mojave Chapter of the Brotherhood isn't prevelant enough for him to really care, though he is slightly intimidated by their armor and guns.

4. Give us a summary of their backstory.       He was born in Freeside in 2264. His father, Michael, is retired from the NCR MP, and his mother, Heather, used to work in The Strip at Gamorrah. When he was six years old, Heather left Freeside and never returned. Archie never found out where she went to, though outside of his knowledge she had hitched a Caravan to the Commonwealth, and then eventually made her way to Maine. He spent most of his time outside of his house in Freeside with a boy named Castor and Castor's sister, Neta. When Archie was at home, he was the sole recipient of verbal, physical and mental abuse. When he turned fifteen, he fled Freeside. He's been wandering for two years, and has yet to settle into a new living situation. He takes whatever jobs he can find to make at least some Caps.

5. What’s their full name and does it have a meaning? Do they have any nicknames and how did they get em?       Archie: Diminutive of Archibald. This name is borne by Archie Andrews, an American comic-book character created in 1941.       Archibald: Derived from the Germanic elements ercan "genuine" and bald "bold". The first element was altered due to the influence of Greek names beginning with the element αρχος (archos) meaning "master". The Normans brought this name to England. It first became common in Scotland in the Middle Ages.       King: From a nickname which derives from the English word king, ultimately from Old English cyning.       Bancroft: From any of the various places of this name, derived from Old English bean meaning "bean" and croft meaning "small enclosed field".       He chose the name 'Archie' for himself while looking through Pre-War books, and no one after his escape from Freeside would or will know his birthname but himself. He doesn't really have any nicknames specific to him.

6. What’s their sexual, romantic, and gender orientation? Do they feel comfortable telling other people?       Note: I don't believe that romantic attraction is different from sexual attraction. Archie is a gay trans male, and uses he / him pronouns. The only thing that would bar him from 'passing' on the outside would be his voice, which definitely could be worked on. Other than that, it would actually surprie him if someone saw him as a girl.

7. Do they have any mental illnesses? How do they cope?       Bipolar Disorder Type II, Major Depressive Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder. He also suffers from constant nightmares. He's never really had any great coping mechanisms. Archie's constant manic episodes tended to lead him to do dangerous things and as a result sustain numerous injuries. Certain sounds are genuinely painful for him to listen to, such as the sound of chewing and even sometimes laughing. CPTSD has led to a mild fear of physical contact, sometimes turning severe depending on his current state. He just tries to get through each day and hope he doesn't tear someone's head off for something.

8. Do they have any medical conditions? Is medicine / treatment available for them?       He has pigeon-toe syndrome, which causes his kneecaps to be slightly misaligned. It isn't a big enough problem for him to be constantly bothered, but he has trouble standing and walking for long periods of time. It affects both of his knees, but primarily the left knee. There's not much he knows of that can fix that. He used to have glasses for his bad eyesight, but they were broken when he left Freeside. He can't wear any other pair that he's found so far without getting migraines. Suffers from an intolerance to eggs and dairy, although he doesn't encounter either of these often enough for it to be a problem. If he ingests too much of either, however, it causes his asthma to flare up.

9. How much do they care about their outer appearance? What’s their “beauty routine”? How often do they shower/ bathe?       He tries to keep his hair shorter than his ears, although that never really works out. That's probably the only thing he really cares about. Archie tries to clean himself as often as he can, although he tends to forget half the time.

10. What do they fear the most?       A lot, but mainly his dad. Especially being returned to his dad, because he has no idea what would happen after running off for two years.

11. Their biggest flaw? Do they recognize it as a flaw?       Archie's biggest flaw is his timidity and his naivety. He's scared of everything, and yet he puts too much trust into people he just met. He doesn't realize this, however. He's also too stubborn for his own good.

20. Do they have a favorite holiday? How do they celebrate it?       There aren’t many holidays in the Wasteland, but he’d probably enjoy Christmas and any big candy-related holidays [ Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Easter ] if they were still around.

28. What is their combat style? What range do they prefer? Do they sneak?       Melee, close-combat. He's horrible at sneaking, and prefers to just dart behind things and hope no one saw him.

29. What weapon do they always carry with them?       A machete, a straight razor and a shovel.

30. How’s their aim? Do their hands shake while pointing a gun?       He couldn't shoot a can a foot in front of him to save his life.

Or do they shake it off rather easily?       He knows it has to happen sometimes, but he tries to get by as much as he can without having to kill things. Depending on the type of person he's killed however, it might make him more than a little uncomfortable.

39. What’s their favorite post-apocalyptic food? Are they a picky eater? Do they know how to cook?       He's an incredibly picky eater. Archie does like Brahmin steaks, however. He doesn't know how to cool incredibly well, but he can at least tell when something's raw versus cooked fully.

40. What’s their favorite beverage? Do they drink alcohol?       Just purified water. Nuka Cola feels like sludge in his throat and it makes him want to vomit. He tried alcohol once but regretted it; said it felt like his chest had been set on fire.

1.     A one or two shot (depending on exactly how long it ends up being) about fae!victor and seer!yuuri. Basically an urban fantasy au.

2.     A Fantasy/Elven AU one shot where both Yuuri and Victor are elves who accidentally come into contact with strange fey fruits and drinks, leading to an NSFW reaction with their bodies; long story short someone left a fertility fruit where it shouldn't have been lol

3.     A nonlinear narrative about all the times Victor and Yuuri's lives collided, but one thing or another did not work out. An exploration of how chronic anxiety affects a relationship, and how the various threads of their past experiences combine to what they have in the present day (Yuuri's friendship with Phichit, for example-- with the focus being on Victuuri, of course).

4.     Vlogger AU. Victor and Yuuri are both students at the same university. Victor is a fairly popular vlogger and he starts watching the videos of someone called Katsudon, who never shows his face in his videos. Victor tries to strike up an online friendship with him, and though Katsudon is hesitant at first, they grow closer.

5.     I plan on writing something akin to 25 lives comic. Basically, Victor and Yuuri always meet in all possible universes; whatever, whenever, however they meet, all different ways but their souls intertwine and are connected

6.     A modern Greek mythology AU in which the classical "gods" are simply roles and titles. Sometimes when a mortal dies under specific circumstances they are brought back as one of these gods, with the eternal youthfulness and powers to match. However, they are not immortal and can die again--this time for good. Yuuri was recently remade as the innocent "Kore," responsible for springtime and vegetation, but one day found himself in a perilous situation. Though he assumed it would be the moment of his demise, he was rescued by an unknown being. Eventually becoming unsatisfied with his prescribed role, he sets out to find and repay whomever it was that saved him many moons ago, changing his name to "Persephone" along the way. (Or: A modern Hades and Persephone AU.)

7.     At age 5, Victor Nikiforov took his first skating lesson at St. Petersburg and was immediately enthralled by the sport. At age 10, he could easily outperform other skaters his age. Then, during a family trip to a small town in Japan called Hasetsu, Victor met, and befriended a 6 year old boy when he catches the boy staring at him skate at the local ice rink. All Yuuri Katsuki wanted was to have the same physical capabilities as other children his age. The disappointment he felt when his parents told him that he wasn���t allowed to skate anymore because of a disorder tore at his 5 year old heart. He painfully swore that he would distance himself from the ice, but after a year of avoiding Ice Castle Hasetsu, Yuuri found himself missing skating tremendously. He wandered over to the rink, thinking no one would be there, but instead, was greeted by the fluid movements of his idol. The two strike up a close friendship within a day that left Yuuri ecstatic, but pained at the same time; after all, he couldn’t risk even going on the ice. A story that follows the lives of Victor, a young ice-skating prodigy, and Yuuri, a boy suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, as they grow up and tackle the challenge life throws at them.

8.     It's a Phantom Thief AU where both of them are PTs, always after the same thing...and they fall for each other in the process.

9.     Explicit story - canon divergent AU. A few days after Yuri comes in 6th in Sochi he is preparing for Japanese Nationals. That's when the news breaks that Victor Nikiforov was injured in an accident in St. Petersburg and is in a coma, with an unknown prognosis. Yuri devotes the rest of the season to Victor, and wins worlds in his memory. He then retires. Yuri studied photography in Detroit, and starts photographing empty ice rinks, trying to capture the feel for himself of a figure skating world without Victor nikiforov. It starts as a labor of love. He tries to recreate famous photos of the skater, with the same angles, but in the empty rinks. At first he thinks that there is dust or cracks on his lenses. First a dot, then a strand. But as he photographs more of the empty rinks, and no other images feature these artifacts he starts to put it together. With each photograph he gathers more of Victor's scattered soul. As he continues to photograph the rinks soon Victor's soul starts to approach him in his dreams, and later even waking. Naughty stuff starts happening (yep, with a pseudo-ghost :-P ) Eventually Yuri realizes that he can help Victor and after begging Yakov is granted access to the comatose skater, who regains consciousness as the scattered parts of his soul is finally returned to his body. There might be more after, but that's the bulk.

10. Gen audiences story - Victor learns that Yuri used to volunteer at a small dog rescue while in Detroit. They start making extra time after every exhibition or competition to visit local rescues, take photos with the dogs to signal boost the doggos into new homes, and they might start doing charity exhibitions depending on how the story goes.

11. Pilot AU: Victor is Yuuri's student and falls in love with him while training to be a pilot.

12. In Time AU - A world where people stop ageing at 25, and every person has a digital clock on their forearm. On their 25th birthday the clock starts ticking, if their time runs out, they die. Poor people struggle in a world where time is currency, rich people thrive and live forever. Viktor Nikiforov is the unhappy son of 300 year old parents living in Moscow, the capital city of one of the wealthiest timezones in the world. He wants for nothing, the clock on his arm never in danger of stopping. Yuuri Katsuki's family struggles to make enough time to live, each day filled with work at their failing Onsen in Japan. After Yuuri's sister almost dies, his parents send them both away, to better timezones and brighter futures. After an accidental meeting between Yuuri and Viktor, both of their lives change drastically. Because if one of you doesn't have enough time to sleep and the other can live forever, love is the last thing anyone needs.

13. In-the-near-future Video Game AU: Yuuri Katsuki a.k.a Akira is THE top-leveled Sniper in the new groundbreaking Persona MMO. One otherwise uneventful day, he and hundreds of thousands of other players find themselves trapped inside the game. Loosely based on elements of SAO and Log Horizon, and combining aspects of the epic Persona games, Yuuri finds himself with a power he shouldn't have, in a situation that should be impossible, encountering a man he hasn't seen in ten years. It's going to be a long grind to get out of this alive.

14. I plan on writing a goddess/angel AU + reincarnation AU. Victor and Yuuri are both angels/goddesses. They fall in love, but the heaven council doesn't approve of it because they love each other more than god which banishes them. Yuuri pleads that their love is real/pure; that it isn't he product of the devil pushes them off the path. He says that they could prove it. Pitchit, who's pretty high up in the council, lets his emotions get the best of him and manages to convince the council to give them a shot. So they get 10 lives, they have to meet in them all and fall in love at least once.

15. My story is an AU wherein Viktor is a former principal ballet dancer forced into retirement by an accident/injury, ends up living in Detroit and depressed, ends up meeting and falling in love with Yuuri who works teaching ballet to underprivileged youth in Detroit, and through that finds a source of purpose again.

16. When Empress Katsuki is killed during a skirmish on the border with Yugashina, the prince and heir to the throne of Lesnya, Victor, knows that war is only a hair's width away. To no one's actual surprise all negotiations fail, leaving Victor with little to no choice but to gather up their armies and march on Yugashina. That is, unless he can devise a better solution in time. Unless he manages to smooth this out before both their lands fall to ruin. Unless– He finds a way. Two neighbouring countries in a state of tentative peace. Two royal families trying to protect their own people. And only one thing that can save them all – a royal union that will cement loyalty, breed forgiveness and maybe somehow fix things. Love? Romance? Chivalry? No one really has time for that when there's a country to save, a murderer to find and a husband waiting for your mask to slip.

17. YOI in a Psycho-Pass AU! Yuuri is in detention as a latent criminal when his lifelong anxiety clouds his hue. So when Victor, well-known Inspector for the MWPSB's Criminal Investigation Unit, shows up and offers the chance to leave and become an Enforcer, he takes it despite his doubts. He doesn't know that Victor remembers Yuuri from his past before Yuuri became a latent criminal, and that Victor is battling his own demons and doubts. Drawn into a psychological game with a serial killer, they'll have to learn to trust and see each other past the Inspector/Enforcer roles.

18. Summary: Happiness seems to be a fleeting thing in Yuuri’s life. He’s lived a long and happy life married to Victor, they plan to spend the rest of their lives together but for Yuuri that is suddenly much longer and without Victor. Yuuri finds himself back in Detroit, before he met Victor, before he had even competed in his first Grand Prix. He’s ready to go back , do it over again to find the man he loves but in this timeline, Victor loses his battle with depression and commits suicide. Yuuri is devastated, ready to give up himself when he gets sent back again, and again and again. He keeps trying and failing to save Victor but that’s his only goal because for some reason Yuuri has been given a chance to save this universe’s Victor. He can only hope that the Yuuri that has taken his place is making his husband happy.

19. Grand Theft Auto V-inspired AU. Victor is a criminal who fakes his death in order to restart his life on the right side of the law. Yuuri is a young hustler who pays his bills repossessing luxury vehicles for a sleazy car salesman. When a visitor from the past convinces Victor to join one last heist, Victor unexpectedly takes on the protege he never knew he wanted– or needed– when he asks Yuuri for backup.

20. This story is a tale of Yuuri with the dreaded hanahaki disease, and his struggle to cope with it. Excerpt from the story: "As soon as the first petal fell from his lips, grief filled him because he did not have a chance. Love would not fall upon him, because he was not meant to love. He would let the flower bloom. Fill his chest until there was no space left, until flower spilled from his mouth. He knew death awaited him, but he could not bear to stop the flowers from growing. Not when those flowers meant so much to him."

21. After the war, General Victor Nikiforov is sent to Hasetsu, Japan to rest and recover from his injuries. There he is looked after by Yuuri Katsuki, who served as a medic.

He learns all that he can from Minako, a retired designer who now runs a bar, and attends a college in Paris, France. He interns at a rising label, where he meets Phichit and Chris. Then the label hires Victor as one of the models for an upcoming show. Cue the crazy antics.

24. Super-cut, volleyball ace Victor Nikiforov crushes on Katsuki Yuuri, the bookish editor of the university newspaper. Unfortunately for him, Yuuri doesn’t even register the Hot Ones anymore — they’re either not interested in him or too damn cocky. He makes friends with them and never imagines anything more. Which frustrates Victor to no end. Why won’t Yuuri look at him, like, ever?

Feeling bad about breaking the other skaters glasses Viktor offers to be his eyes during the competition. Yuuri can't see well without them so he doesn't realize that he is being led around by the Viktor Nikiforov.

28. Soulmate au where everyone is born with a small riddle on the inside of their left wrist. Yuuri has the characters for "love" and "mouth" (愛口) while Victor has the phrase "courage to win" (in Cyrillic). They have no idea who the riddle could refer to and have pretty much accepted that they're never gonna find their soulmate. yuuri gets drunk and Victor flies to hasetsu like in the anime and Victor figures out his riddle before yuuri but doesn't tell him they're soulmates until yuuri also figures it out.

Soulmate AU with a twist: if the meeting of soulmates does not go right, a person who is fated to be close to the couple must help them find each other... by reliving the day of meeting as many times as necessary. Yurio gets stuck with the train crash that is Viktor's and Yuuri's first meeting at Sochi.

Yurio is also there and he's the one who ends up taking care of them, and making sure they don't get into any trouble or anyone notices that they've been transported from the past. The older ones, meanwhile, are transported in their respective home rinks, St. Petersburg for Victor and Hasetsu for Yuuri. Neither of them know that the other was transported too and god the pining is real. They get into a lot of shenanigans trying to lowkey find out if the other is also in that time. They spend a week in the different points and they get to learn a lot of each other. The priorites of younger Yuuri and Viktor shift as they are gain different perspectives on what skating means for them.

38. I plan to write Yuuri as a Manga artist who draws BL (a few normal stories to make sure he earns the money he needs to, of course). Viktor meets Yuuri because he's always been a huge fan while producing his own comics but they aren't as popular. Yuuri immediately finds himself drawn to Viktor the moment he looks at him and decides to share his contact information so they can talk later.

39. Victor Nikiforov accidentally discovered his ability to jump space and time when he was only a child. Subsequently, he lost his parents that day and has been trying to find his long-lost family ever since. But in each jump he takes, he seems to get farther and farther away from home. He's about to give up hope when he realizes there's one person he keeps meeting in each of the different timelines and universes. His name, Yuuri, and his presence in each of the places Victor goes, leads Victor to think Yuuri might be a key. If only he could stop falling in love with Yuuri every time they met.

41.  Sci-Fi/Dystopian Future AU Yuuri Katsuki thinks he has it relatively okay. Sure, scrambling through the Waste as Tech Scavenger isn't exactly a glamorous life, but at least he can keep a (leaking) roof over his head, his nose (kind of) out of trouble, and a (somewhat) stead supply of materials to keep his bionic arm operational. But on one of his solo reconnaissance missions he actually uncovers a VITYA model, one of the rare pleasure bots once manufactured by Nikiforov Inc. Nikiforov as in Viktor Nikiforov, head CEO and founder of the first companies to create and market AI. As in Viktor Nikiforov, Yuuri's long-time idol, a kindred spirit in the robotics and technological field. As in Viktor Nikiforov, the man who vanished five years ago, just before the world went to complete hell. Now Yuuri is thrust on a journey to uncover where exactly his VITYA model came from, what caused Nikiforov's disappearance in the first place, and why a pleasure bot is the most human companionship Yuuri has had in awhile.

As the seasons come and go, things tend to get a little crazy, but that’s when the best things happen, right? “Um, I watch our neighbor’s cat on the weekends and she keeps bringing me, erm, things. You wouldn’t happen to be missing some socks and underwear, by any chance?” “Oh my god, Viktor, his fire alarm is going off AGAIN. Either he seriously can’t cook or his hotness keeps setting his place on fire.” Yuuri’s on his balcony, watching the sky burn into vermillion flames and singing along to Pandora. The beat has him dancing, slowly swaying his hips as he waters his plants. Another voice joins his and he turns, jolting and spilling the rest of his water over the side of the balcony. There’s a splash and somebody’s cursing him from down below, but he’s stuck, frozen in mortification as he’s caught by the most gorgeous neighbor in existence. Is it important to mention that he was only in a baggy t-shirt and boxers? “Oh, please, don’t stop on my account.”

Aromantic asexual! And if I can finish it (it’s at thirteen pages right now, and I’m near the end, I just—!), I should have a fic exploring him discovering this posted for Pride Month. (Yes, we’re two days out from the end of Pride Month, and I have another fic due on the 30th, and I’m still struggling to finish this, orz.)

But essentially, Alan is as aroace as it is possible to get. He does not feel romantic nor sexual attraction for anyone, period. As I’ve mentioned before, he never once shows any kind of attraction toward anyone during his time on the show, which is notable for the Kalos saga due to how many characters openly and blatantly expressed romantic attraction to others (including Alan’s own papa, what with the way Sycamore blatantly hit on Meyer like that). Alan is aware that romantic and sexual attraction are things that exist for other people—that other people get into relationships and the like—but it’s not something that he ever experiences himself, and usually it’s so far from his mind that he doesn’t even realize when others are hitting on him / when others take the things he says as flirtations (such as, I headcanon that Ayaka thought he was flirting with her in TSME 1 when he said that it was an honor to be complimented by her, but he wasn’t—he just genuinely meant that in a respectful way, because he’s a nice person).

Additionally, while he’s not romance repulsed (he’s not interested, but it also doesn’t skeeve him out), he is sex-repulsed to an extent. Like, it doesn’t bother him that other people have sex, and he doesn’t mind if they talk about it in front of him / doesn’t mind discussions about it, particularly since it’s something that occurs in nature with pokémon and whatnot. It’s a thing that happens. But the idea of having sex or being involved in a sexual act himself is one that does skeeve him out and make him uncomfortable. He’s not only not sexually attracted to others, and is not only not at all interested in participating, but the idea of participating makes him uncomfortable to the point of wanting to up and leave. It’s not a huge, drastic thing, but it still is a thing nonetheless. It’s a part of who he is.

mental illness / neurodivergent headcanon

Right off the bat, he absolutely has complex post-traumatic stress disorder, otherwise known as C-PTSD, as a result of being an abuse survivor. Based on canon alone, he definitely has it as a result of being emotionally abused by Lysandre over a period of years (two in my headcanon, but the exact time frame is unspecified in canon; all we can tell is that it was quite a long time). If we add the backstory I created for him to that, then he had C-PTSD even prior to that as a result of his abusive early childhood in Isolé Village. Living with Sycamore helped mitigate his symptoms and helped him heal considerably (particularly since Sycamore rescued him from Isolé Village when he was so little, and raised him for the seven years following), but when he was recruited into Lysandre’s service, the emotional abuse that Lysandre doled out on him reawakened and exacerbated the symptoms that, while latent, were already there. (Keep in mind, too, that C-PTSD can often strongly resemble a personality disorder when it occurs in childhood / adolescence—it shapes the way one grows and develops, and affects how they come to see and interact with the world. So this isn’t something that can ever be healed completely, nor is it something that will just “go away”. While Alan can and certainly will recover from his trauma, his C-PTSD is something he is going to be living with for the rest of his life, and something that has shaped him as a person.)

In addition to C-PTSD, I do think that he’s prone to clinical depression, as well as an anxiety disorder. His depression, while chronic, tends to not be severe unless it’s working in conjunction with his C-PTSD (in the sense that, his depression is acting up again while he’s also suffering a guilt / shame spiral as a result of his trauma, hence everything is exacerbated and the depression is a lot worse than it would be if it was just the depression acting up on its own). His anxiety, on the other hand, does tend to be more severe, particularly because Alan has the type of brain that never shuts up. Once he gets started thinking about something that stresses him out, he has a difficult time distracting himself from it. He’ll keep thinking about it, and think about it some more, and think about it even more, and this leads him on anxiety spiral that can spiral right down into a panic attack. (Of course, the problem is that Alan also tends to stifle his reactions to things and shut down / close in on himself, so it can be hard to spot. Yes, he’s having a panic attack, but since he shuts down and just goes silent, it can be damn near impossible for others to tell. That said, sometimes his panic attacks get so bad that he actually vomits, so … that’s a little more noticeable, even if he’ll usually try to get somewhere private (or at least with just Lizardon) before it gets to that point.)

So yes, he has C-PTSD, depression, and a major anxiety disorder. Fun times!

3 random headcanons

Only three? Heheh. I’ll try to share three new ones.

At some point in the Immortality AU he gets a massive sycamore tree tattoo on his back. It’s purely in black ink, and is rather stylized, but he got it as a tribute to his father, as well as … well … a reminder of his roots. ;)(… I’ll see myself out.)

He knows how to pick locks. Specifically, he knows how to pick locks with a paperclip. Even more specifically, he knows how to pick handcuff locks with a paperclip, and had to do this once when he was ten (which is also the time he discovered he could figure out how to do this). Yes, there is a story there, and yes, it will be written eventually. But the point is, he can pick other locks, too, if you give him a paperclip and enough time to work it. (And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a paperclip—a bobby pin could work too—but it’s just that a paperclip was what he had on him at the time, when he was ten. He was a lab assistant, what do you expect?)

Alan has various social media accounts, but he hardly uses any of them. Like, he has a Tripter, but he hasn’t updated it in months and probably doesn’t even remember it exists on the regular. He has a FateBook (and has had one for years), but he rarely posts things himself and changes his profile picture once in a blue moon. He does comment on other people’s statuses and the like, but again, his activity there is still pretty minimal, even then. (He’s also very selective about who he adds on FB. He has a very small Friends List, and even though the Friend Requests start piling up (much to his alarm) after he becomes Champion (and tbh he even had quite a few after winning the League), he just kind of … lets them sit.) Manon pestered him until he created a blog on Shakr, and so he does have one there, but … it still has the default theme. He has never posted anything. He never reblogs anything, either. No one even knows it’s his. He’s just not interested.That said, the one social media account that he does update at least semi-regularly? Immedigram. While he rarely adds captions to his photos, he takes a decent amount of pictures with his PokéNav Plus (or whatever the newest model is—Steven makes sure he stays current), and he uploads them to IG whenever he does. He has quite a few followers because, in all honesty, some of the pictures he takes while flying with Lizardon are downright beautiful. (And there are a lot of sky / dawn / dusk / star pictures. He … really likes the sky. It calms him.) So there is that, at least, even if Manon still thinks that his social media participation could use a lot more work. (Steven agrees. Alan just rolls his eyes and ignores them.)

Manon likes girls. She likes pretty girls! And this is something that’s always been a part of her, even before she consciously realized that she had pretty strong crushes on pretty girls right out of the gate. But once she hits her teen years it doesn’t take her long to realize that she really, really likes pretty girls, and from there to realize that she really only likes pretty girls. Like, guys are okay, she guesses—but they just don’t make her heart flutter the way girls do. Moreover, Manon being Manon, once she realizes this about herself she’s pretty okay with it. And by “pretty okay”, I mean that once Manon has a crush on someone, she goes after that person. She is not afraid to outright flirt with someone she is interested in, or outright ask them on a date, or outright tell Alan about how she found her future wife and they are going to get married and adopt three children and he better be her best man at her wedding.

“What’s her last name?” Alan asks.

“I’m—it’s—” Manon waves a hand dismissively. “I’ll get to that part. I’ll find out. It won’t matter ‘cause she’ll take mine, anyway.”

“Uh-huh.”

“What do you mean, ‘uh-huh’? What’s that tone for? Why do you always sound so disbelieving whenever I tell you I’m getting married?!”

“I think you just answered your own question.”

“Hmph! Keep this up, and I won’t let you be my best man!!”

(For the record, he’s not her best man when she gets married. He is the one, given the absence of a father in her life, to walk her down the aisle, though.)

While I’m by no means an expert on it, I can absolutely see Manon with ADD, as well as dyslexia. She tends to talk fast and jumps from idea to idea, and some of her most common questions have to do with words or vocabulary, which could stem from a difficulty with reading (like, if she has dyslexia + has difficulties focusing on the page, then learning new words could be a challenge). These two things tend to frustrate her and make her feel stupid at times, because if she was smarter she wouldn’t have such problems—but of course she’s not stupid at all. She just has a learning disability / neurodivergence, and that’s okay because she learns in different ways, particularly once she learns how to work around her learning disability / neurodivergence to find the learning styles that work for her.

(Bonus: She had no idea that she had either of those, but Alan noticed her mixing up words / letters when reading or writing, thought it might be dyslexia, and talked to Sycamore about it the next time they talked. The three of them sat down and discussed things, did some research, one thing led to another and that’s how Manon had some pretty big questions answered for her. Who knew.)

3 random headcanons

Manon loves flowers and plants of all types, which is a big part of the reason why she ends up specializing in grass-types (to the point of becoming the grass-type specialist of the Kalosean Elite Four). When she’s older she’s almost always wearing a (fresh) flower crown in her hair, along with hair clips that are shaped like leaves. She also gets flower tattoos along her arms, with each flower representing a different important person in her life. Also, while I always imagined that she would evolve Hari-san into a chesnaught someday, lately I’ve been toying with the idea that maybe he stays a chespin forever, similarly to how Pikachu will forever be Pikachu. People can laugh, but Hari-san can be the most dependable pokémon in Kalos even if he never evolves—he could be strong regardless. I’m not sold on that yet, but I’ve been toying with it lately anyway. (Besides, it’s not like he can mega evolve—that’s for Fushi-kun the venusaur—so there’s no reason why he has to evolve all the way …)

Yvonne ends up becoming her rival. She is high-key outraged when she learns that Alan helped Yvonne pick her starter pokémon / gave her advice. (“Alan, don’t help her, she’s my rival!!”) They end up becoming friends (girlfriends??) later on in life, but it’s a hot rivalry there for a while, particularly since Yvonne picked fennekin, which has a type advantage over … well, Hari-san, but also the rest of Manon’s team.

She gets her ears pierced when she gets older. Let me be more specific: She gets her ears really pierced when she gets older. Not only the standard piercings, but also piercings all the way down her cartilage, on both sides. She doesn’t get gauges, though; those are gross, even to her.

Steven:

I’m … not actually sure, to be honest. I really don’t have a firm grasp on Steven; sometimes I feel demiromantic demisexual, but then I also think that he recognized that Sycamore was damn fine when they first met and was only half-joking when he asked Alan if Sycamore was seeing anyone. (And even then, the half-joke just came from the fact that Steven is actually in a happy relationship with Wallace, and wouldn’t pursue Sycamore anyway; he was just curious because, damn, Sycamore might be ten years his senior, but he is still attractive in basically every way.) He obviously doesn’t have a bond with Sycamore at the time, which would suggest that he’s not demisexual, but … I don’t have a clear read on his orientation, still.

That said, it’s entirely possible that he’s still demiromantic, and maybe … pansexual? Homosexual? Allosexual without a clear boundary even though he’s never been attracted to women? Something else?? Like I said, I don’t really have a firm idea here, haha. Maybe I’ll just cheat and say that Steven has never felt the need to identify with anything specific because his feelings are what they are, he’s in a happy relationship for now, that’s all that really matters. He is Not Straight™, and that’s all he knows, and that is all he cares to know, and if anyone wants to have a problem with him not being more specific, they are free to take it up with his metagross.

I don’t really see anything here either, haha. ;; Nothing about his behavior really stands out to me, personally, as reminiscent of a mental illness or neurodivergence. 

(Though that said, now I’m laughing a bit, because when Alan sends out Lizardon to fight the Primal Legendaries in TSME 3, Steven expresses exasperation at how Alan went and just did that without giving any warning, because it’s reckless and dangerous and why can’t Alan at least communicate these plans or ask for help instead of just doing everything by himself, and I just—okay, well, we can’t all be neurotypical, Steven. =P)

His relationship with Wallace is straight up childhood best friends to lovers. Wallace was pretty much the only friend he had growing up (because Wallace only ever treated him like Steven, versus treating him like the heir to Devon Corporation), and as such they have a level of emotional intimacy that is nigh unparalleled. That said, they also have a level of comfort with each other that can lead to things like—well, like this. (They really do love each other, but sometimes Steven drives Wallace a little nuts and Wallace is not afraid to let him know.)

 Although he does genuinely love steel-types (and rock-types as well) due to his fondness for precious stones and rocks and the like, part of the reason why he chose to specialize in those types as a child is because he has an allergy to various pokémon dander. The severity of the allergy depends on the pokémon, and to be honest he’s not even entirely sure he knows all of the pokémon he’s allergic to, but when it comes to pokémon with fur, there is a definite risk that if he spends time around them / comes in contact with their dander, he will start to get hives, and might even have some trouble breathing. (This is also part of why he very often wears long sleeves; it creates less risk for him to come in contact with pokémon dander while out and about, and therefore less risk for his allergy to trigger, just in case.) Such an allergy can be treated, of course, but it can also make training difficult (not to mention emotionally painful, if he couldn’t even pet his own pokémon without hives breaking out), so he sticks to pokémon without fur, which thankfully, steel-types and rock-types have plenty of.

He is gorgeous, and he is a fantastic dancer, but he cannot sing for anything. It is said that children have been moved to tears by his singing, and trust me, those are not tears of joy. Never invite him to karaoke night. There will be much regret.

Sycamore:

He’s gay. Like, 100% into men only. Although he has always been a rather charming person and finds it easy to charm women (something he often does unintentionally—he can’t help it, he’s just charming by nature!), when it comes to romantic or sexual interest he has only ever been attracted in men. He realized this about himself in his early teen years, and has readily embraced it ever since.

Sycamore has struggled with chronic depression for pretty much his entire life, the severity of which varies depending on where he is in his life at the time (so like, it was really bad in university, but it’s not nearly as powerful and is much more easily fought in adulthood, when he has his dream job and a happy family). He also has experience with an anxiety disorder, as well as that fun cycle of “I’m too depressed to get up and go to class, but now I’m anxious about failing my classes, and the potential for failure worsens my depression, and my worsened depression increases my chances of failing, which then heightens my anxiety, and …” And so on and so forth. That was a monster to deal with in university, let me tell you. (Fortunately, he wasn’t alone. As much as Fulbert might have grumbled, he did help Sycamore where he could. There’s a reason they remained friends after university, and the fact that Fulbert not only used tough love such as flipping Sycamore’s mattress to get him out of bed in dire circumstances, but also helped Sycamore complete some of his coursework on top of the work Fulbert had to do for his own program, is part of it.)

3 random headcanons

He doesn’t drink very often, but he is the lightest of lightweights when he does. He really only ever drinks wine when he does drink alcohol, but it only takes about two glasses (if that) before he is slap-happy drunk. One time he and Meyer had some wine with dinner (while at home), and that was the first time Meyer had ever seen Sycamore drink, and it was not very long before Sycamore decided that it was time to enact some Risky Business. It was a good night.

He really likes cereal. Like, a lot. Not even just a specific kind of cereal, but all kinds of cereal (well, all kinds of cereal that you eat with milk and a spoon in a baseball helmet bowl, anyway—oatmeal is not really his thing). He will eat it for any meal or snack of the day, and sometimes all of them if he can get away with it and doesn’t have a small child he needs to set an example for. He just … really enjoys cereal, okay.

As notorious as he is for bad fashion, one of his favorite parts of taking Alan in when Alan was five was buying him all kinds of cute little kid clothes and merchandise and things. (I mean, he loves pretty much every aspect of (unofficially) adopting that boy, but you know.) In his eyes, pretty much every article of clothing and accessory available for purchase was absolutely adorable, to the point where he could hardly stand it at times. Like, for instance, one of the shirts Sycamore bought him had a rockruff rolling around on the front, with the words “Rock ‘n’ Roll!” Another one had a cubchoo on it and said “Chill Out!” He bought Alan light-up shoes, and also a plush komala backpack where the actual backpack part of it was the log, which unzipped at the top (the komala was purely a plush). For the orange theme day of Alan’s first Festival de la Vie (when he was still five) he got him a charizard hoodie that had wings on the back, spikes on the head to resemble charizard, and sleeves that ended in clawed gloves (with little holes on the bottoms of the sleeves so Alan could stick his hands through). It also had a detachable flame tail. Alan wore it for weeks and Sycamore probably has about a hundred pictures. But really, though, Sycamore just found all the little kid fashion to be so cute and would spontaneously buy shirts or what have you for Alan for the sole reason that he thought they were cute, and it was honestly one of his favorite things to do. He frickin’ loved it.(Also, I haven’t decided if Kalos has a Halloween equivalent yet, but if they do, imagine that when Alan was five or six, Sycamore decided on a werewolf costume for him, based on rockruff. And because it’s always fun for the parents to dress up to take the kids trick-or-treating too, he dressed up as a werewolf based on lycanroc. PAPA (WERE)WOLF WITH LITTLE (WERE)WOLF PUPPER. ADORABLE. I have these very organized. The first portion are all FMA based. Any verse that has to do with specific muses will have them tagged, however just because a character is tagged doesn’t mean you can’t rp that verse. The only ones that won’t be rped with other people are the ship based ones. So never hesitate to ask more about each verse or send starters for them. Also all headcanons for the verses will be tagged as “(verse name) hc”

Sweet Love; This is Rory and Leanna’s ( @littlemisssweetcakes ) primary verse. Rory and Lea are in a lovingly complicated relationship.

Another You; This verse is what started it all for Rory’s existence and probably will be my main verse. Jean Havoc disappears and becomes the homunculus Greed. Rory blames herself that he resorted to feeling like he needed to sacrifice himself to help her achieve her goals to be Fuhrer. She’s a lot more emotional in this verse with the constant struggles of not wanting to admit her feelings for Havoc despite him being a homunculus.

Three’s Company; Rory, Lea ( @littlemisssweetcakes ), and Jean (N/A) end up in a polyamorous relationship. This is basically a combination of Another You and Sweet Love. There are a few time frames that can be played out:

One (Name TBD): This verse takes place after Havoc’s disappearance. Rory is still struggling over the disappearance of Havoc, but has made the decision to be in a committed relationship with Leanna.

Two (Broken Fragments): Rory and Lea are broken up. To Be Updated!

Two point five (Name TBD): Havoc returns as a homunculus. At first; it’s complicated and definitely not the most stable thing to exist. Rory tries to do everything in her power to make Havoc (Greed) return back to human.

Three (Name TBD): With the help of Lea; Rory makes Havoc becomes human again. While still on the complicated side, they’ve all managed to make the relationship a lot more stable with minimal jealousy issues occurring.

Mommie Dearest; This mainly is for the use of an AU crimsonandcarbon had came up with but shared with me. It’s primarily for Maes Hughes where his role and Gracia’s are reversed. It can work with canon as well. Basically any case that someone is dead leaving Elicia without a parent and Rory takes the second parent role is how this is to be used.

College; Exactly as it sounds. Rory is in her first year of studying chemistry, fourth year being in college as a total. She has a fascination with fire, and enjoys writing poetry.

Reality Escape; This is an asylum au. Can be taken in a modern verse or in a 1940s-1950s settings. Depending on the time frame, things may be a little different for Rory. Either way Rory suffers from Pyromania and Borderline Personality Disorder. In a modern verse; Rory committed herself to seek the help she needs. In the 1940s-50s verse; Rory was tossed in by her aunt as a way to “get rid of her” for being such a “pest.”

Other Mother; This verse is a little more open than the sub-verses below it. After so many near death incidents on Ed’s part (following a canon timeline), Rory decides to take on an unofficial mother role to Ed and Al in hopes of him to be less likely to get killed.

Fullmetal Brat; Because there are so many different Edwards in this fandom, this is my specific verse for @fullmetalflea . Rory becomes an unofficial mother figure for Edward. His verse title for this is Mother Flame.

Sweet Alphonse; This is currently open to any Alphonse that is interested in interacting in this verse.

Little Liam; This verse is specific for @a-cluster-of-cute-ocs. Liam is the youngest Elric brother.

Modern; At the moment this is just Rory and Edward ( @chiisaikintsukuroi ), but is open to anyone who wants a modern verse. Rory is in the Air Force Reserves, working full time on base, and part time as a warehouse manager off base. I will say that the knowledge Rory has of Edward’s life does not leave that RP.

Fractured Figments; Mirror AU. I am putting this with the FMA verses, because that’s what this is. Rory is an “imaginary friend” of Roy’s. She’s often his voice of reason, as well as the cause of most of his turmoils.

Bittersweet; This verse is based on Rory’s feelings for Ed ( @thetinyalchemist ). Maybe one day she’ll admit her feelings. However, for the foreseeable future, that will not be happening.

The following verses are all based on other fandoms. These allow me to have Rory interact with other characters in other fandoms as well as come up with interesting verses that I never would have really considered before.

Wonderblood; Deadman Wonderland AU. Rory is known as the albatross (They briefly mention an albatross, but don’t elaborate further.) Her fighting style is capoeira, combining her deadman abilities into this. She can create needle-like points from any open wound on her body. She also can shoot them out at her opponents. She is missing an eye from losing a fight, as well as most of her hair.

Fire Song; s-CRY-ed AU. Rory is an alter user that works for HOLY. Her ability is similar to Ayase Terada’s where if she does a quick flicking motion with her hair, she can cause explosions either in the air or on a specific object that she is touching. Or she can let her hair sit there and cause a fire on objects around her. This ability is called Fire Song.

Gym Leader; Pokemon AU. Rory is an aspiring gym leader. Her pokemon are Ninetales, Delphox, Mightyena, Arcenine, Flareon and Umbreon. In case you missed the trend, they are all fire or dark and some form of canine. Rory has taken over an abandoned pokemon gym and is in the works of restoring it as well as getting the proper approval to become a gym leader.

Puppy Gone; Fruits Basket AU. This verse is based in high school with Shigure, Ayame and Hatori. This can be before or after Rory knows about the curse. I have it based that Rory dates Shigure during high school and is forced to live with the Sohma’s due to knowing of the curse. After college Rory is told to move far away to never return.

Dragon&Phoenix; This is a sub-verse for Puppy Gone. Rory returns back despite being told to never come back. She ends up getting close to Hatori ( @hatori-sohma ) and eventually dates him.

Shake It Off; Celebrity AU. I’m not creative. Rory is a singer (Using Taylor Swift songs because it suits her best). She has been dating Edward ( @thetinyalchemist ) on and off since high school (Rory is now 24, Ed is only a few years younger). Edward is in the military with no “famous” traits other than being known as Rory’s on/off boyfriend. Always assume Rory is on her “off” time with Ed unless previously discussed for them to be dating for the threads. Also Rory may cheat on Ed but that is also something discussed by everyone involved in the storyline/threads.

Forgotten Name; Sucker Punch AU. Just like in the Sucker Punch movie, Rory goes by a false name, Phoenix. She is a patient/worker in the asylum/business (depending which way it’s to be taken). Phoenix was given that name because of her fiery attitude and ability to continually be “reborn” from the negative things she witnesses on a daily basis.

Talentless Host; Ouran High School Host Club AU. Rory and Tamaki were childhood friends. When he moved away, Rory didn’t think too much of it. Until she moved to Japan to attend Ouran Academy. Learning that Tamaki had started a “Host Club,” Rory decided to take advantage of her unisex name to pass as a male to reconnect with her old friend.

Momma Litchfield; Orange is the New Black AU. Rory was 22 years old when she had gotten arrested for arson. Not long after being sentenced to Litchfield prison, Rory was given the title as “prison mom.” She tries to keep out of everyone’s affairs, unless someone is picking a fight with one of her children.

Ultimate Survival; Walking Dead AU. There are two versions of this; they both will be under the same tag however:

Version One: Alchemy is still usable in this verse. Homunculi and Chimeras are unaffected by this virus. Rory is most often traveling with Havoc, Hughes, Gracia, Elicia and Hawkeye. This can change depending on who the thread is being written with.

Version Two: Rory was in the military before the apocalypse. She has lived this long by relying on flares and her knowledge of various chemical reactions that have worked to her benefit. Rory has lived this long on her own, but isn’t against making temporary allies when the time calls for it.

Meme Au; Meme based AU. This is exactly as it sounds. An AU based from a meme. It has little to nothing to do with any of the other verses or AU’s listed above.
