The Devil is a Part-Timer Season 2 - Conclusion

About 1/3 of the time is spent rolling back the character development to try and recreate iconic moments from Season 1. Instead of creating iconic moments, it just comes across as cliché.

1/3 of the time is spent on the excuse plot, whereby the magic baby forces Emi and Maou together.

This leaves 1/3 of the time for the actual plot and character development, and that said, half of the actual plot is the author explaining things that did not need to be explained.

But, the character development is absolutely charming, once the show decides to actually do something with itself.

Okay, the Angels were Humans who stole the Sephiroth to give themselves power and immortality. In the process they accidentally created Demons.

But, the Sephirah were actually Humans with magic genes, and this was done by geneticist. This is, quite frankly, silly and anti-climactic.

The first revelation adds weight to the existing story, while the second revelation throws out the original story and replaces it with a much more stupid one.

The reason they ended up on Earth is that it is also a Sephirah world. So, they ended up on Earth, because Destiny Says So. Despite the entire premise of the story being the devil being trapped on Earth because of a complete lack of magic, and ends up living in a single-bedroom apartment while working part-time at McDonalds. That is the whole point, and if you say it's because some larger plot requires it, then you make the story much worse.

Chiho ends up a vehicle for Laila, the mother of Emi, and saviour of Maou. And this somehow allows her to unlock magic, but can't because blah-blah-blah.

How about this, because Chiho was the target of sonor pulses between the worlds, she becomes a living bridge, allowing her to channel Magic and Celestial Force from Ente Isla? Same result, without destiny says so.

The show also does everything it can to prevent Mao from actually doing anything. Rather than having Mao control a bear, let's have Emi give it a Judo throw, despite the fact she's from a place that never developed Judo. It seems partially to allow Emi and Suzuno to have more time in combat, but they don't. And in fact, there is very little combat until the last 5 minutes. And this is despite the fact the first season had periodic epic battles, whereas season 2 leads up to the battle, and they just pushes it aside.

The animation was also cheaped out on, (the main girls seem to have double the detail of any other character), so that might explain the lack of combat. But the end result is a number of situations that Mao should be able to solve the problem easily, but they decided he cannot.

One thing they did do quite well is explain Mao's rise to power, and why it was happening. If briefly.
