Let The Games Begin
Check out this new release from Abigail Owen's new Series. The Game Gods Play is a story of the Gods and Humans. It is the read of the year!!!
Grab your copy today.
My Review
OMG!!! This book!!! I applaud Abigail Owen on an excellent job. This book just blew me away. I absolutely love this take on the Gods and their mortals. It is unique, exciting, dangerous and very imaginative. It is simply wonderful. Not to mention a little dose of slow burn romance to light those senses on fire.
Lyra is in the order of thieves, yet she doesn't exactly have that skill set. She struggles with loneliness due to the fact that Zeus cursed her as a baby. Her curse is to be unlovable. Due to this curse she has never experienced true friendship or love. Mad at the Gods, more specifically Zeus, she goes to voice her anger only to run into another. What she doesn't know is that her life is about to change in drastic raise.
The Crucible is held by the Gods every 100 years. The God whose contender wins gains the God a crown to rule the Overworld for the next 100 years. The Crucible starts and the Gods chose their contenders. There is one major change this time in the Crucible, Hades. He has never joined the Crucible before and this year he is and his choice contender is a very unexpected person.
This book is filled with danger and monsters. It is a fight for survival. It has all the elements of a top paranormal romance. A well written story with a unique plot that includes unique and complex characters. Think Percy Jackson mixed with the Hunger Games and you will get this book. It reminds me of the Percy Jackson stories with it's interpretations of the Gods and the magical items they bestow on the contenders. The Crucible reminds me of the Hunger Games with it's tributes. An amazing combination that has created an exciting new story.
I can't wait to read the next, because, you guessed it, there is a cliff hanger. Happy Reading Everyone.

Review: Blue Moon by Angela Colsin
Book: Blue Moon: The Crucible Book 1 Author: Angela Colsin ( @angelacolsin ) The Lovers: Cade Hodgins & Ashley Passmore Tropes: Paranormal, Romance, Alpha Male, Mates Trope, Shifters, Wolves, Starting a new life, Hesitant attraction Hotness: Not Safe For Mom Rating: 4 stars
Synopsis
When betrayed by his Alpha, Cade Hodgins takes the role in leading the Arkin City pack and begins his search for those responsible for his father’s death. Information is hard to come by however—until a stray lupine wanders into his territory.
But Ashley Passmore is no ordinary stray. She’s a newborn wolf, turned from being a human with no prior knowledge that lupines existed. Due to her blackouts, she can’t recall who turned her or why, but Cade suspects her attackers may be the same as those who entrapped his father.
In the meantime, Cade takes Ashley in to help her regain control of her new life, and finds more than just a lead—she's his mate. But Ashley is adjusting to the new world she's been thrust into, making it uncertain she'll accept the growing bond between them, while those who turned her want to make sure she's silenced for good.
I decided to put in a warning prior to my post today. This book, and subsequent post, deals with both consent and life after a traumatic event. This isn’t about rape, though some of the events in the book might as well be a thin veil for talking about it. As I’ll repeat in the post, considering the climate, the #metoo movement, and the stories women share, I want to make sure you as a reader are prepared for this. There is nothing graphic shared in this post, however, knowing that the hint of this conversation can be upsetting to some, I wanted to put this warning out there.
You know those assholes who like to shit on the romance genre as a whole? The people who say that romance is nothing more than trash, is all about sex, isn’t smart, isn’t edifying, isn’t up to their perfect pseudo-intellectual standards? You know those assholes. Those asshole are wrong! And have probably never picked up a romance book in their life (Mini rant never over).
And the reason I know they’re wrong is because of the numerous, edifying, issue-raising books I have read in this genre. Take exhibit A and the book I’ll be reviewing today: Blue Moon by Angela Colsin.
I reviewed another of Colsin’s books, Strange Brew, back in September and I loved it. Blue Moon is equally fantastic. All her books have held up pretty damn well. While I loved the 5th one, The Final Calling, the best, I’m reviewing the first on for two reasons: 1. I was given a copy of this book by the author to review, but 2. And maybe more importantly, this book deals with consent and life after trauma. In this climate, with the #metoo movement and the unending stories of women experiencing sexual assault, I felt it was important to review this book. There was a moment I thought about reaching out to Colsin to see if she’d be alright with me reviewing The Final Calling instead. However, this blog isn’t just to highlight books I love, but to highlight books that have important things to say. I think Blue Moon has some important things to say.
Here's a little book-backstory for you. Cade Hodgins is a Lupin. This is different than a werewolf, which I won't get into because it's irrelevant to this review and Colsin tells you all about it at the start of the book. He's the Alpha (leader) of his pack and is hunting for the bastard Lupins who killed his father. Dad Hodgins discover these jackasses were running an illegal and highly dangerous gambling ring based on pitting newly turned Lupins against each other. Which, in this world is a HUGE NO! Not only are they running these fights, it also turns out they're turning people without their express permission. Again, a HUGE NO in this world. Which brings us to Ashley.
Ashley becomes the unwitting victim of these Lupins. Her world is turned upside-down, she’s scared, she doesn’t know what’s happening, and has no idea that the supernatural world exists. She’s halfway convinced she’s going insane. When she meets Cade, she’s vulnerable and, more than anything, wants someone to explain what the hell is going on.
So the fact that she is taken in and cared for by Cade and his pack is so important to Ashley’s arc. Everyone in Cade’s pack who heard about Ashely being turned against her will were angry…downright murderous, even. Ashely is believed. She isn’t told she’s wrong or her being turned was her fault. In fact, she’s told this:
“Don’t go on a guilt trip, Ash. You’re not a bad person, you were victimized. Nothing that happened was your fault.”
Do you know how many women need to hear this? Need to hear that it wasn’t their fault. That what happened to them wasn’t because of something they did? Probably every single woman. I love this. And this is the part of the book I think is so important. The people who surround Ashley are caring and nurturing. She quickly finds a family within this pack and who will fight for her and teach her how to fight as well. Colsin does an amazing job of balancing Ashley’s recovery and giving her a lodestone to turn to when things are starting to overwhelm her. I wish more people had this! Everyone needs a pack.
I just…I have a lot of feels about this.

Hi there! I absolutely ADORE your writing skills! Please write a book! tht wud be AMAZINNGGGG. On that note, what are your favorite books?
Tysm! I’m working on one but it’s slow going between school and life. Also I’m a sucker for people asking for my favorite books and I’m putting off a paper so I listed 15 of my favorites here! I’ll list more “read if you enjoy…” stuff about them under the cut but without further ado:
Matilda (Roald Dahl), Lord of the Flies (William Golding), Six of Crows (Duology; Leigh Bardugo)
Delirium (Series; Lauren Oliver), The Thousandth Floor (Series; Katherine McGee), Cruel Beauty (Rosamund Hodge), The Selection (Series; Kiera Cass), It’s Kind of a Funny Story (Ned Vizzini), Death of a Salesman (Play; Arthur Miller), Great Expectations (Charles Dickens), The Jewel (Series; Amy Ewing), The Demonologist (Nonfiction; Gerard Brittle), The Scarlet Letter (Nathaniel Hawthorne), The Night Circus (Erin Morgenstern)
The Top Three are my personal favorites within this list, though they’re all very good. But Matilda is what got me deciding that I wanted to read everything I could, so it holds a special place in my heart, and LotF is a fascinating look into human nature imo. And Kaz Brekker in SoC???? My absolute darling. But every single character in that duology is perfect and I would die if Bardugo wrote more on them.
If you’re looking for a book to get you out of a reading slump, I recommend the Thousandth Floor series - it’s easy to read and entertaining, esp. if you thrive on reading drama like I do. Cruel Beauty is the only decent fairytale retelling (BatB) I’ve found. In Delirium, love is outlawed and “cured” via surgery by the government (Oliver is an amazing author. I own nearly all her books). The Selection gets ripped on but it’s a fun story so people need to relax; In it, a girl is entered into a competition to marry the prince but her and him strike a deal where she agrees to help him choose one of the other girls while he lets her eat all the sweets she wants (I really simplified that btw) (Also, Maxon is amazing and I would marry him in a heartbeat; oh and Kiera Cass is amazing too). The Jewel is interesting and though I read it a couple years ago, I still think about it from time to time. The Night Circus is a little blah at the end imo but it has one of the most gorgeous writing styles and some fascinating characters, which saved it.
TSL and Great Expectations are classics. Death of a Salesman is a play, if anyone likes those. I highly recommend Miller’s The Crucible as well if that’s the case.
Matilda if youlike A Touch of Magic, One Character Overcoming Tough Situations, AdoptedMentor, Easily Visible Good vs. Evil, Humor, Easy & Quick to Read Stories,Roald Dahl just in General really
Lord of the Flies ifyou like Stories Relating to Psychology, Survival Fiction, Stranded on anAbandoned Island Trope (Prob. Not a trope but I’m tired), Character ComparisonsIn-Text, Stories that Leave You Thinking/Contemplating, Stories about HumanNature
Six of Crows ifyou like Strong Female Characters, Vivid Descriptions, Urban Fantasy, SomeMagic Use, Realistic Character Development and Just Wonderful CharacterCreation/Continuity, Heists/Crime Stories
Delirium if youlike YA Romance, Dystopic Settings, Rebellion Against the Government, StrongFriendships
The Thousandth Floor ifyou like Drama, Teen Drama, Interwoven Character Stories, Gossip Girl-esque Drama,Relationship Drama, Futuristic Settings, Extremely Varied CharacterPersonalities, Multiple POV Characters, Easy to Read Books to get out of aReading Slump
Cruel Beauty ifyou like Fairytale Retellings, Romance, Gorgeous Descriptions, Myths, Some Worldbuilding,Enemies-to-Lovers Tropes, Information Revealed as the Protagonist Discovers It(Not all laid out ahead of time and watching Protag stumble ahead blindly and rollingour eyes bc it seems so obvious), Fated Love, Demons and Humans, A GorgeousBook Cover
The Selection Series ifyou like Royalty Fiction, The Bachelorette, Love Triangles (It’s really not thatbad), Will-they-won’t-they Tropes, Enemies-to-Friends-to-Lovers Tropes
It’s Kind of a FunnyStory if you like Realistic Stories about Mental Health, RelatableCharacters, Stories about Depression, Humor
Death of a Salesman ifyou like Plays (obviously), Stories about Realistic People, Stories about aDownward Spiral, Distraught Family Stories, Realistic Fiction
Great Expectations ifyou like Realistic Fiction, Bildungsroman Stories (Coming-of-Age), CharactersGetting What They Deserve, Long Sentences (Ugh, Dickens, wrap it up), Wrappedwith a Bow-Tie Endings, Well-Described Setting, Mysterious Characters
The Jewel if youlike Forbidden Love, Dystopic Settings, Overcoming Struggles, Rebellion
The Demonologist ifyou like Non-fiction, Paranormal Stories, Spooky Stories, The Conjuring Movies,Information on Paranormal Events and Possible Causes, Unusual Life Experiences
The Scarlet Letter ifyou like Long and Vivid Setting Descriptions, 17th Century Settings,Critiques on Puritinism’s Treatment of Women, Semi-Family Drama, GorgeousDescriptions, Sometimes Antiquated Language
The Night Circus ifyou like Magic, Magical Duels, Beautiful Descriptions, Forbidden Love,Mysterious Characters, Paying Attention to Dates bc Time Skips Around, AnEver-changing Setting, Complex Characters that never quite Let On What They’reThinking
#this is probably too much but nobody ever asks me for books that I enjoyed for some reason#even though I have a million of them and too little bookshelf space#anyway these are just a handful of book recs#and I went over a variety of genres bc i'm betting there's a wide variety of readers on here#and bc my favorites really do span so many genres#anyway y'all can ask for specifics on any of these if you have questions#or just hmu if you've read one of them!!!!#I would love that!!!!#I love discussing books and characters#it's half the reason I write ff is to explore these characters#since no one in my real life will discuss them w/me#BUT ANYWAY i'm too wordy#that's not a shocker#have a good day anon!#and thanks for the question and compliment :)#not writing#answered#anon#lovely asks

Piri’s Ultimate List Of Horror Recs (2017 Version)
my go-to compilation of ever single horror/horror-related media i’ve ever enjoyed, including slashers, paranormal, thrillers, creature features, and much, much more 🎃
note: this list has trigger warnings but i am operating under the assumption that you are okay with the standard level of explicit sexuality, vulgarity, violence, and gore present in mainstream horror
horror
original nightmare on elm street series, but especially 1, 3, 4, 6, and freddy vs. jason (tw for implied pedophilia and explicit child murder, tw for rape in #6)
friday the 13th (original and remake)
honestly all the friday the 13th sequels are A Treasure but if you want The Core Canon watch 1-3
my bloody valentine (original)
psycho (original) and tbh all its sequels (tw for sort-of-kind-of incest vibes)
psycho ii and psycho iv are my favorites because (1) meg tilly is adorable in psycho ii and (2) psycho iv has a harley quinn/norman bates cameo and nobody can convince me otherwise
child’s play, child’s play 2, bride of chucky, maybe some sequels after that idk i haven’t seen them yet :(
scream franchise
not the mtv scream series
i mean s1 is decent but there are definitely other horror shows that i would recommend more (will show up later in this post)
1-3 are the best, 4 is worth watching if you really like the characters but as a concept the series has p much run its course by then
tw for rape mentions in scream 1 and 3
predator
peeping tom
kenneth branagh’s frankenstein (tw for a graphic depiction of death in childbirth)
james whale’s frankenstein
bride of frankenstein
the phantom of the opera (1925)
the phantom of the opera (1989) (tw for mild body/surgical horror, general grossness; personally speaking, this is one of my all-time favorite phantom adaptations, because 1. robert englund as the phantom hello oh my god, 2. although it’s much more of a slasher movie than a gothic romance, it does an amazing job of portraying the tragedy in erik’s backstory and his attraction to christine, without implying that he is entitled to christine’s affection and that her love will magically fix him, as some phantom adaptations do)
the phantom of the opera (1943)
alien franchise
the wolfman (2010)
darling (tw for rape)
house on haunted hill (original and remake)
final destination franchise
medium raw: night of the wolf (tw for pedophilia and child murder)
the babadook
the final girls [horror comedy]
the shining (tw for implied child abuse)
the cabin in the woods
hellraiser (tw for incest-y vibes for very brief periods of time)
heathers (tw for eating disorders, suicide, everything high school kids are insensitive assholes about)
from dusk til dawn
an american werewolf in london
the guest
it follows (tw for dubious consent)
nightwatch (tw for implied necrophilia/descriptions of necrophilia, self-mutilation)
re-animator (tw for rape, pedophilia mentions)
carrie (original) (tw for child abuse, religious iconography)
the remake had some interesting like... subtext/imagery but other than that it was pretty *wet fart noise*
the awakening
the craft
the blair witch project
honestly i loved the book of shadows: blair witch 2 bc it kind of parallels the crucible but i can admit that objectively it is Terrible
elvira, mistress of the dark [spooky comedy]*
american mary (tw for rape, (consensual surgical) genital mutilation)
fright night (original and remake)
jaws
listen. this is a horror movie. it was a horror book before that. it was specifically written and later adapted for the purpose of scaring and entertaining people. real life is nothing like this. real sharks are nothing like this. there’s nothing wrong with this movie scaring you but there is everything wrong with using this movie as an excuse to advocate for the wholesale slaughter of animals. sharks are quite possibly the most graceful and beautiful creatures on this earth and i will personally fight anyone who says otherwise
halloween franchise
1-5 are the best imo but no matter what skip #3 because it literally has nothing to do with any of the other movies
not the rob zombie remakes, those are awful
let the right one in [swedish (?) film, watch with subtitles]
rosemary’s baby (original)
night of the living dead (original)
28 days later
suspiria
silent hill (tw for child molestation)
crimson peak (tw for incest)
the lost boys
interview with the vampire
the ring
one missed call
the raven (2012)
repo! the genetic opera
teeth (tw for rape, incest, it’s??????? about a girl who literally has razor-sharp teeth in her vagina and it’s a very tongue-in-cheek commentary on religious repression???? so idk like it’s a wild ride and i love it but watch at your own discretion)
american psycho (tw for rape, general misogyny)
sweeney todd
speaking from experience, this is much better live, the movie sucked out all the fun and humor that wasn’t literally written into the lyrics, so i recommend watching the original broadway cast on youtube or something
there’s also a 1936 movie which i haven’t seen so i can’t speak to its quality BUT i would recommend it on the basis of it being made before the musical was created and thus being based more directly on “the string of pearls” novel which is where the sweeney todd urban legend was originally documented
abott and costello meet [insert universal horror monster here] [spooky comedy]
little shop of horrors (original and remake) [spooky comedy]
the last man on earth (1964)
adapted from the same book i am legend (2007) was adapted from but the last man on earth stays much closer to the original book imo
c. h. u. d.
ghostbusters (1984 and 2016 versions)*
ghost ship
sick girl (tw for bugs, pregnancy horror)
misery (tw for torture)
puppet master series (tw for rape, nazism)
the haunting in connecticut
zombieland**
jurassic park series
lizzie borden took an axe
wolf creek (tw for rape)
it (1990, 2017)
i have........ some nitpicky issues about putting it on this list, because neither movie adaptation really did justice to the whole concept of “derry itself is an extension of an eldritch horror and the real scary part of the story isn’t the clown, it’s the horrible violent tragedies that have repeatedly occurred and then been dismissed throughout derry’s history, leaving the entire town in a large-scale sort of cycle of abuse” so ????????????? idk like i truly do recommend reading the book as well as seeing the movies for The Whole It Experience(TM), but i totally get that not everyone is gonna do that
the 1990 version tells more or less the complete story, but because of that it didn’t have time to include a lot of fun details
the 2017 version only tells the childhood portion of the story, which leaves it time to include fun details. i was really hoping to see more of derry’s backstory or more development on mike and stan as members of marginalized groups -> how that influences their life in derry, but we didn’t get much of that? mike’s importance to the losers (researcher, somewhat of a skeptic/hardass at times to keep the others together) was removed, his healthy family dynamic was removed (mike, richie, and possibly stan are the only characters in the book with healthy family dynamics, somewhat underscoring the concept that derry itself is trapped in a cycle of abuse), and derry’s history of racism is never touched on aside from the kids mentioning “the fire at the black spot” a couple times in passing. overall it was a fun movie and you can tell everyone making it had a blast but compared to the book it’s like. mmmmmmmmmmmmm
BASICALLY what i’m saying here is that the book is really deep wrt social issues, and while neither movie really touches on those concepts in-depth, they are still good horror movies on their own and ofc a part of american pop culture
house of wax (1953)
marnie (tw for rape, abuse and coercion in a marriage dynamic, animal/pet death, graphic depictions of psychological abuse, graphic depiction of a violent death involving a child)
cabin fever (tw for sickness horror/body function horror/unsanitary horror, occasional slurs)
mega shark vs. giant octopus
i don’t even have a real reason for listing this i just can’t believe it exists and i want the whole world to know
texas chainsaw massacre (1974), texas chainsaw massacre 2, texas chainsaw 3d
ju-on: the grudge
phantoms
the plot is pretty ehhh imo but the effects are great; rose mcgowan is gorgeous as always, peter o’toole’s character is great, and ben affleck’s character lowkey has some batman circa arkham knight vibes going on. also, liev schrieber becomes a tentacle monster. i couldn’t make this shit up if i tried y’all
vamps*
this movie. this movie
krysten ritter and alicia silverstone are a couple of vampires, sigourney weaver is their hot mess of a vampire mom, dan stevens is krysten ritter’s boyfriend, wallace shawn is van helsing but he’s basically just vizzini: vampire hunter au and it’s GOLD
it’s literally the cutest and funniest vampire media i’ve ever seen in my life as well as one of the most detailed when it comes to vampire lore i cannot recommend it enough
bram stoker’s dracula
death becomes her**
what we do in the shadows**
disturbia
frankenstein (2004 miniseries, more like a 2-part movie than a tv show)
flatliners (1990) (tw for drug use, uncensored depictions of cadaver dissection)
the cabinet of dr. caligari
the limehouse golem (tw for sexual assault and csa)
repulsion (tw for sexual assault)
the trial (1962)
*spooky comedy: a comedy movie with a spooky premise that i am categorizing with horror movies due to the genre overlap, but that lacks the intense violence, gore, etc. of a horror movie
**horror comedy: a spooky comedy that does not lower the level of violence, gore, etc. that is standard in a horror movie
thrillers
stoker (tw for incest, has a scene in which the protag’s mother verbally abuses her)
m [german film, watch with subtitles] (tw for themes of pedophilia/child molestation/child murder, but it’s worth noting that the whole point of the movie is to condemn and demonize pedophilia)
also one of if not the very first detective movies
nightcrawler (tw for rape)
the vvitch/the witch/however the fuck it’s spelled
rear window (1954)
zodiac
hannibal lecter franchise (tw for cannibalism, obviously)-- the silence of the lambs, hannibal, red dragon, manhunter
manhunter is adapted from the same book red dragon is (red dragon) except manhunter was made before anthony hopkins became The Iconic Hannibal Lecter(TM) so it focuses much more on will graham and francis dolarhyde
hannibal rising is worth watching for gaspard ulliel’s performance but the book was much better
the hannibal movie adaptation changed the ending of the hannibal book while still maintaining a really good and really compelling storyline so the book and movie are definitely both highly recommended by me
gone girl
shutter island (tw for asylum horror)
pan’s labyrinth
tiger house
the champagne murders
the plot and pacing are a little ehhh; in my opinion there was too much tension buildup between characters and not enough actual plot development. BUT, anthony perkins is in it so it’s worth watching if you love him like i do
documentaries
cropsey (documentary on child murders)
urban legends (another documentary, by the same people, talks about how real-life crime affects the american psyche and lives on as urban legends/horror tropes)
the poisoner’s handbook
h. h. holmes
nightmares in red, white, and blue
his name was jason
never sleep again: the elm street legacy
american ripper [currently ongoing tv series]
television/youtube
bates motel
ahs s1 (tw for... literally everything)
slasher
similar basic premise as ahs, but imo ahs is v exploitative and builds the plot on violence and vice, whereas slasher builds the violence and vice on the plot
supernatural (LISTEN........ LISTEN....................... conceptually it’s the bees knees okay)
penny dreadful (tw for constant explicit sexuality, religious iconography/sacrilege, asylum horror)
criminal minds
bbc broadchurch
bbc river
bbc sherlock but literally only ep. 3.4 “the abominable bride”
rosemary’s baby (2-part made-for-tv movie)
unedited footage of a bear
marblehornets
true detective
frankenstein (2004 miniseries, more like a 2-part movie than a tv show)
tbs’ search party
podcasts
the black tapes podcast
small town horror
alice isn’t dead
king falls am [spooky comedy, more sci-fi than horror but there is One Episode that positively screams “love letter to 80s horror movies” so i can’t leave it out with good conscience]
limetown
welcome to night vale [spooky comedy]
the dark tome
video games
until dawn
outlast series
five nights at freddy’s
dead by daylight
bioshock

The Crucible Paranormal Romance Series Book Nine: Tempting Eternity
As one of the first vampires created by the original five thousand years ago, time has taken it’s toll on Mathias, weathering him until nothing seems like a surprise anymore. Yet even he isn’t prepared for a chance encounter with a fae who proves to have a lover’s blood link.
For a vampire, such a connection is a fevered, hopeless fantasy. None have blood as sweetly enticing as the fae, but they’d never survive the turning, making it imperative to resist Isadora’s charms, otherwise put her very life at risk.
Yet distancing himself from the beguiling fae isn’t so easy.
Nearly killed by one of her own sisters, the last thing Isadora expects to hear is that a vampire saved her life while she was vulnerable—no being poses more of a lethal threat to the fae. Even more troubling is knowing she’ll have to seek his help to have any hope of saving her fae sisters from the control of a powerful witch.
But though the ancient vampire should be feared, Isadora finds Mathias compelling, pricking her innate curiosity in a way she’s never experienced. Ignoring such intrigue is impossible, and the more she learns, the more quickly her feelings turn into heavy attraction, tempting her to do the impossible—spend eternity with a vampire.

I think I’m going to put up the epilogue of Fated Fortunes for download as a pdf pretty soon since it’s basically where Tempting Eternity starts.
