The Bug Club - Fully Clothed 2023
The Bug Club is a Welsh indie rockband from Caldicot, Monmouthshire. Formed in 2016, the current lineup consists of Sam Willmett (guitar, vocals) and Tilly Harris (bass, vocals). Initially playing blues music, the band now has a contemporary indie rock sound and is signed to Sub Pop. Their second studio album Rare Birds: Hour Of Song was released on October 20, 2023, and was more experimental than their previous work, with spoken word interludes, more diverse genres and new instrumentation. It is also their longest work to date, being slightly longer than an hour.

The Bug Club - It's Art (2023)
I heard this charming tune recently on another blog (non-tumblr) and it lodged itself in my head. The Bug Club are a duo from Wales, and recently signed to Sub-Pop. This tune reminds me of the slightly artsy and eccentric records in the early 80s - maybe a mix of Jonathan Richman and the Buzzcocks.
It doesn't have to make sense, you know

12/11/22.
The Bug Club (Monmouthshire, Wales) were first mentioned here nearly 3 years ago. In that time, they've changed a little. First, they are no longer on the label Bingo Records (they've released many great records including Melin Melyn). Second, they've changed their sound some. When we first posted about them, their minimal sound was likened to both Beat Happening and Les Cox Sportifs.
"Rare Birds: Hour of Song" is a hodge-podge of sounds recorded over the past year. This is a double LP and as such, the band called it "a ""South Wales' Double Nickels On The Dime". This has got some weirdness that recalls Gorky's Zygotic Mynci at their finest. But, really, there are sounds that sound like Australian punk/post-punk. Then I saw that this was mastered by Mikey Young.
This is released by Canadian label We Are Busy Bodies.

The Bug Club — On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System (Sub Pop)
Tumblr media
The Bug Club spins like a tilt-a-wheel at the county fair, a giddy, silly, gut-checking ride that leaves smiles and bruises in equal measure.  The band, from Wales, combines tipsy whimsy with big beefy riffs, making twee precious fun of everyone (including themselves) against a hard rock clangor.  If you ever wondered what Tiny Tim might have sounded like fronting AC/DC, have a listen.  It’s 100% fun.
Consider for instance, the grinding, squalling, heavy rock furor that, musically at least, makes up “A Bit Like James Bond.”  Yet over this wall of dissonance, this bass-bounding, guitar-roaring foundation, comes a jaunty fancy.  “Everybody thinks they look a bit like James Bond,” chants Sam Willett, gleefully, daring you to contradict him.  He knows it’s ridiculous, but he’s just about able to keep a straight face as he lists all the things that link him to 007, very un-spy like things like collecting commemorative stamps and gluten intolerance and a black Passat in the garage.  “I certainly couldn’t give a shit…about the consequences of my acid wit,” he declares, before a dead stop and a turn in the rock and roll mayhem, and that, at least, seems like the absolute truth.
“Lonsdale Slipons” is the best of these tracks, a vaudeville shuffle arranged for electric bass and drums.  It’s a “Let’s dance” kind of song, and you can easily see the whole band shimmying across the stage, Willetts, his partner in art (and the source of that bouncing bass line) Tilly Harris and drummer Dan Matthew, all jittering in silly synchrony as the music plays them off.  That’s the high point, but not by much.  “Quality Pints” punches and grins and erupts in rockabilly guitar squawks, as it celebrates the search for a good beer.  “Pop Single” satirizes the songwriting process, earnestly proposing a quiet section “for the dancers to twirl” and a key change which, voila, occurs as they sing.  And “We Don’t Care About That” pokes at the generation gap, in a hard vamping enumeration of all the things that Willets/Harris et al. do not want to hear about any more (traffic, books, the problems with new microwaves).  “Stop talking, shhhhhhhhut up,” they sing after every stultifying verse.  Yet they do it with such joy that it hardly stings at all, even if you’re of an age where you might be the target.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to ask Gwenifer Raymond and Cate Le Bon (separately), what distinguished Welsh music.  Raymond identified a certain dark humor and Le Bon noted the willingness to follow your own weirdness, regardless of what people thought.  I’d say the Bug Club checks both boxes and hurray for that.
