‘Glee’ alum Darren Criss ready for National Christmas Tree Lighting ahead of Wolf Trap
His breakthrough role arrived on Fox’s “Glee” before winning an Emmy Award on FX’s “American Crime Story.”
This week, actor and singer Darren Criss performs live at the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on The Ellipse outside the White House on Thursday night.
“This is my first year doing this particular event,” Criss told WTOP. “I’ve been lucky enough in my career to have done a number of things for the Bidens. That is a low-key humble brag. They haven’t decided to kick me off the invite list yet, but there’s still room! I could really biff it at the White House.”
He joins a star-studded lineup of Mickey Guyton, Dionne Warwick, Joe Walsh, Ledisi and St. Vincent.
“It’s a pretty cool list, man,” Criss said. “I just saw the list and I don’t know who printed the ad mat, but there’s no world in my mind where I would ever appropriately be anywhere higher or before the likes of St. Vincent, Renee Rapp. … When your name is with the likes of Joe Walsh, Dionne Warwick and many more, you can’t help but just have a huge wave of imposter syndrome.”
After that, “A Very Darren Crissmas” hits The Barns at Wolf Trap in Virginia on Saturday and Sunday.
“We’re just going from town to town spreading holiday cheer, man,” Criss said. “A lot of people put out holiday albums … just playing the very well-known songs. … My main goal in life is not necessarily as a performer but more like a curator. … If I had it my way, my Christmas album would have been 100 songs that no one’s ever heard of, but because I’m not a fool, I toe the line between familiar stuff but I do it in an unfamiliar way.”
Born in San Francisco in 1987, Criss grew up in loving “Star Wars,” “Transformers” and The Beatles. He pursued the arts as a theater major at the University of Michigan, performing in “Pride & Prejudice” and “A Few Good Men” before founding StarKid Productions to produce his own shows. That included the Harry Potter production “A Very Potter Musical,” which actually landed songs on the Billboard charts.
After appearing on the ABC series “Eastwick,” Criss’ big break came on Fox’s “Glee” (2010-2015), playing transfer student Blaine Anderson, who eventually married Kurt Hummel. Criss started out singing Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and ended by writing the Emmy-nominated song “This Time” for the series finale.
“‘Glee’ was incredibly popular and progressive,” Criss said. “I lucked out and won the golden ticket because when I joined that show, it already had a significant degree of attention where one of the most popular characters was Kurt, somebody who was making waves … in the queer dialogue amongst popular culture, the conversation of gay teens and representation of queer people on mainstream, linear, network television.”
He reunited with Ryan Murphy to play the killer Andrew Cunanan in “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2017), beating out Antonio Banderas, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeff Daniels, John Legend and Jesse Plemons to win the Emmy for Best Actor in a Limited Series.
“Actors wait a whole lifetime for parts like that,” Criss said. “This horrible thing happened because of a guy who happened to kind of look like me and be kind of my age and ethnicity. … Twenty years later, how do we make sure those tragedies don’t end up as these horrible things? To bring light to a darkness by illuminating the things around those tragedies, the other themes that led to how and why these things happened.”
On stage, his Broadway roles include replacing Daniel Radcliffe in “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying” (2012), replacing Neil Patrick Harris in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” (2015) and joining Sam Rockwell and Laurence Fishburne in the revival of David Mamet’s play “American Buffalo” (2022).
“I’ve really gotten to check a lot of boxes in what I believe to still be the earlier part of life and career, boxes that I really did always dream of and worked hard to get to,” Criss said. “Now onto Christmas baby!”

RIP Bo$$...I make a point of not repeating tracks on the podcast, but her classic single "Deeper" is in the mix on episode 37 if you fancy going back nearly twelve years into the archives. Her run may have been short, but the talent was there.

The Notorious B.I.G and 2Pac : Where Brooklyn At? (Freestyle)
Starting off raw, but also very much a selection that makes you sad when you consider what was lost - first a friendship, then two lives. Biggie and 2Pac took the stage together in 1993 at Madison Square Garden for this memorable freestyle performance (with some of the lyrics later turning up on other tracks), and DJ Mister Cee had the presence of mind to record it to cassette. The sound quality might be rough, but it's history. RIP to Biggie and 2Pac.
[Oh No] Grand Agent : After
This track is a shockingly short fifty-two seconds long, so I had to loop it up here to give a long enough instrumental bed for the voiceover - and it's a shame because it's easily one of the best beat on the "Under The Circumstances" project that Oh No produced for Grand Agent back in 2005. This was another bit of wax that I rediscovered during The Great Digitisation, and I'm glad I did - for everyone who missed it the first time round, there's a very affordable digital release!
The Eastsidaz ft. Butch Cassidy, Nate Dogg, and Kokane : Cool
We start the first mix over on the West Coast, Long Beach to be precise, with The Eastsidaz, a group made up of Snoop, Big Tray Deee, and Goldie Loc, and essentially a reprise of a previous group The Eastsiders that had Snoop, Crooked I, and Li'l C-Style as members. While the original group only released one song officially, the later lineup is much better-known, and their second LP "Duces 'n Trayz: The Old Fashioned Way" is a well-regarded album for those who appreciate the style. The late great Nate Dogg blesses them with some vocals on the hook here, alongside the multi-talented but oft-overlooked Butch Cassidy who is actually the lead singer here, and another connoisseur's choice in Pomona's Kokane. The producer isn't one that you might immediately expect, but in fact Hi-Tek working with MCs who are spitting material far from the Reflection Eternal sphere!
Tyler Daley : Never Look Down
The first of a run of three Manchester tracks, this is a brand new single from half of Children of Zeus, taken from his aptly-named "Son of Zeus" EP. Thematically this could have been part of Zeus' "Balance" album, with Tyler both rhyming and singing about the challenges and pressures of balancing family life and a music career, over the kind of modern soul production that is a crew trademark. Definitely get yourself a copy of this new release.
Berry Blacc, Dubbul O, & Jointhedots : The Rain
Possibly the most appropriately-named record that could come from Manchester, Jointhedots are back with their second release of the year, with longtime collaborators Dubbul O and Berry Blacc on the mic. The jazzy, chilled vibe of the instrumental is a trademark of the crew, and both MCs settle into it perfectly - not trying to dominate it, not running wild, just fitting in as two more instruments, lyrical ones of course. Grab this single and keep an eye out for future releases...🤞🏿
KinKai & Mecca:83 : Safe Don't Say
Short, but one where they leave us wanting more! A third straight local selection, this was on the mammoth "Manchester With Love" compilation that raised money after the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. With over 200 tracks, it was easy for any individual track to slip under the radar, and somehow this gem did for me! Mecca:83 supplies a piano-led track with a little acoustic guitar in the back, and KinKai displays a preview of the quality he delivered on his debut LP three years later.
[DJ Quik] Suga Free : On My Way (Inst)
Playing instrumentals allows me to feature some songs which might be lyrically a bit...much - and plenty of Suga Free's material fits into that category! The vocal version is on his debut LP "Street Gospel", which is entirely produced by the man behind the boards here, Compton's own DJ Quik.
Math Hoffa : Comeback
Absolute fire - this was being trailed at the start of Math's "My Expert Opinion" podcast videos on Youtube before the full video surfaced. Still, as I said in the comments, I wasn't counting it as a release until the audio was out to stream or buy, and now it is! Wordplay and punchlines are the name of the game here, as the renowned battle rapper and podcast host starts off talking about his iced-out watch and takes it from there. GQ Beatz does a stellar job on production, taking a well-known Janet Jackson sample as the basis and filling out beautifully around it. I'm a huge fan of this single.
Paul Wall & Termanology ft. CL Smooth : It's Magic
The sound of this track is so chunky I wondered for a sec if Statik Selektah had sampled the Alex Isley cover version of Patrice Rushen's "Remind Me", but it's the original, expertly augmented. Taken from last year's "Start, Finish, Repeat" album, this may have been an autumn release but it's got summer anthem (for the heads) written all over it. CL Smooth is the perfect guest star, Paul Wall is spitting heavy too, and Termanology brings it home with his rapid-fire flow. Expect to hear this on my Twitch streams and mixes this year!
Large Professor : The LP (For My People)
Classic boom-bap - which was, with a different sentiment, the feeling of Geffen Records, who didn't know what to do with "The LP" when it was completed in 1996 as they felt it was too retro. Well, it's still getting play nowadays while many of the records they expected the Queens legend to ape have long since been forgotten. Bass is thick, drums are too, and it's just that straight-up 90s Hip-Hop.
Phife ft. Dwele : God Send
While I could have played something from Tribe, I decided that the Phife tune this month would be something from his final solo LP, "Forever", which was released posthumously. Despite everything he was going through at the time, some of which he speaks of on the track, Phife is philosophical and even a touch optimistic, which says a lot about his spirit. Dwele provides some great added vocals, and the whole thing is undergirded by production from G Koop & Bobby Ozuna. RIP Mutty Ranks.
Ge-Ology : Q-Boro Bonus Break 1 (Inst)
Bonus is right - a cheeky extra beat on the 12" of Apani B-Fly Emcee's "Estragen" courtesy of Ge-Ology - a producer maybe not known to everyone, but peep this interview!
Defcee and BoatHouse ft. greenSLLIME : Close The Curtain
This has been getting an awful lot of headphone time for me this month, and I can already see it making my Spotify Wrapped come the end of the year. You need to pick up the Import Edition version of the "For All Debts Public And Private" album to get this - worth supporting as there a good number of extra tracks on top of what was already a very solid album. BoatHouse's dark beat is perfect for a weights workout, and both MCs go back and forth in classic duo fasion with skill, but the absolute highlight for me here is Defcee taking Jadakiss' famous boasts from "We Gonna Make It" and adding clever asides for an everyman, self-deprecating take! It's a really nice bit of borrowing that I like to think would make the man from The LOX smile if he hears it 🙂
Curren$y & Statik Selektah ft. Termanology : Gran Turismo
Statik and Termanology together again (as 1982), but this time supporting the New Orleans legend Curren$y on the title track from a very enjoyable, if short release from 2019. Laidback and kind of gentle, despite the solidity of the bassline and the crisp drums, it's less of a racing soundtrack and more of a sunset crusing accompaniment.
X-Ecutioners ft. Anikke and Taboo : The Turntablist Anthem
You might have missed this one, which was a smooth track from the 1997 "X-Pressions" LP. The album wasn't what I was expecting from this legendary turntablist crew, being much more expansive - with scratch tracks and routines rubbing shoulders with spoken word, straight instrumentals, and tracks like this one! With the hook inspired by "Hey DJ" by The World's Famous Supreme Team, this has an unusual structure - on top of the beat you have mostly scratching courtesy of Rob Swift, the hook coming in periodically, and then a single rhymed verse to close out. The album might not have been a big seller, but is definitely worth your time for a listen.
Terrace Martin ft. Arin Ray & Smino : This Morning
I wasn't aware of Arin Ray or Smino (MC on the second verse) until I heard this, likely as a lot of R&B and the like passes me by, but together with Terrace Martin they're a fire combination! This was on the 2021 "Drones" album and it's a sonic treat - those rolling drums, deep sub-bass lurking, and plenty of keys courtesy of Mr Martin put the pressure on the vocalists to come correct, and thy do.
The Alchemist : Break The Bank
A steady, melancholy beat that almost sounds like time counting down. Who'd have thought that half of The Whooliganz would eventually master this kind of vibe? This instrumental is on the "Rapper's Best Friend 3" compilation, but you can hear it with lyrics thanks to Schoolboy Q, on the ten year-old (already?) LP "Oxymoron".
Ice Cube ft. Deadly Threat, J Dee, Kam, King Tee, and The Maad Circle : Color Blind
Wow. I was maybe fifteen when I first heard this towards the end of Ice Cube's "Death Certificate" album, and this collection of testimonies to the realities of Los Angeles' gang violence hits me even harder all these years later. The production draws you in without demanding the spotlight, which is rightly on the MCs. Every single verse has at least one starkly memorable line, even the closing two half-length verses by King Tee and J-Dee. I wanted to play this one in full, with nothing following it, so that you can take it all in in its entirety and hear every single bar clearly. A masterpiece, in my humble opinion.
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!

Mako Road Band Research
From humble origins as a Canterbury University covers band, Mako Road have remarkably quickly become a force to be reckoned with, a staple act on annual summer festival lineups and selling out their own tour gigs in just hours.
“We just started playing covers during student events and we sorta got to a point where we were seeing a lot of successful bands coming out of Dunedin, and they were playing festivals and releasing music and people were really into it. We were like, ‘Man we could try this.’
“Rhian wrote our first song, The Sun Comes Up [recorded and mixed by Jaine back in 2017], and it got a lot of attention straight away which was incredibly lucky for us. We recorded in a garage, CJ was YouTubing how to mix songs! We put it up and were like, ‘Let’s do a Christchurch release party.’ Then we booked a show in Wellington and people actually bought tickets… and we were like ‘Oh man, let’s keep doing this.’ And somehow we’ve ended up here!”
“The album is a big step for a band, it’s almost like a rite of passage, and we were trying to write an album for ages. We were kind of struggling with it initially, our writing process is pretty haphazard, we’ve always got ideas floating around. We booked a bach on the edge of Lake Taupo which was beautiful, really isolated ourselves, and booked studio time, and then wrote the album and went straight into the studio 10 days later.”
“Our approach is to just release it, play it live. We’re so live orientated, the recording thing’s almost like a fun experience. Writing music’s always the best part, but it’s the live performances that are our thing.”
“I think that’s the perpetual thing for musicians, as well for anybody who goes through that, they’re just wanting to get straight back onto that creative process. But we’re stoked that it’s finally out there and that people are going to listen to it.”
“That’s your core source of interaction with people, and music is about that connection and interaction. I think that’s the thing that has got artists reeling after Covid, it’s that they’re missing that in-person interaction. It’s such a crucial element to what we try to do, and what I think every musician cherishes about their music career is the playing live element. It’s a surreal experience and it’s something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to.
“I remember at RnV we were looking out before we were on and there wasn’t much happening. We went backstage to warm up and when I came back out the crowd was just like all the way up the hill! I felt like I had my stomach in my throat the whole set, it just felt like chaos, like un-bottled chaos, like I couldn’t even really recall the set I just remember sitting there just trying not to freak out and not fuck up my parts!”
Despite already having over half a million monthly Spotify listeners and live shows frantically selling out, Mako Road are most definitely still down to earth, vibrant former students doing what they do best; creating tunes and playing them to excited crowds full of new and established fans.

Thanks for the reply, interesting song choices, I think that everyone I know (me included) prefers the earlier era (for me Figaro, News, Ticket, Dolls and Wild are literally perfect kpop songs), so it's a nice change of perspective. And yeah, if they hadn't been so terribly mismanaged they could have been huge (I think that from the 'big' groups Kara comes closest stylistically to their music and Namyu's songs are every bit just as good as Kara's best songs like Step or Lupin or Pandora). Since we're at it, could you do the same for Red Velvet? They're my second favourite group and I'm curious about your choices here

Red Velvet honestly has the best discography of all kpop ggs. Wendy imo is one of the best female vocalists kpop has ever seen, and that's a FACT. I could watch Seulgi dance all day. I just wish SM focused on them more and gave them better comebacks and songs after 2019. It just doesn't feel the same anymore...if they had been under any other agency, they would have gotten better treatment. Their talent is under-utilized tbh.

FAN EXPO Cleveland Celebrity Roster Adds Sean Gunn, Carl Weathers, Peter Weller, March 24-26
The FAN EXPO Cleveland celebrity roster, off to a solid start with several major announcements earlier this month, got another big boost today with the addition of three stars from hugely popular franchises from the past five decades up to the present day. Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Endgame), Carl Weathers (“The Mandalorian,” Rocky) and Peter Weller (RoboCop, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension) join a stellar lineup for the event, set for March 24-26 at Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.
Sean Gunn played “Kraglin” in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) as well as providing the physical performance via motion capture for “Rocket Raccoon” in both films plus Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder. He also portrayed “Kirk Gleason” throughout the seven-year run of “Gilmore Girls” among his 60+ acting credits.
Carl Weathers, who portrays “Greef Karga” in “The Mandalorian,” first gained acclaim for his role as boxer “Apollo Creed” in the first four Rocky films (1976–85). The former pro football player also has had memorable roles as “George Dillon” in Predator (1987), the title role in Action Jackson (1988), and “Combat Carl” in the Toy Story franchise. Weathers will be joined at FAN EXPO Cleveland by fellow “Mandalorian” standout Emily Swallow, announced last month in the first set of guests.
Accomplished actor, director, voice over artist and occasional professor Peter Weller’s amazing career has taken him from the mean streets of old Detroit to the final frontier of space. He has appeared in more than 50 films and television series, notably in the title role in 1987’s RoboCop and its sequel RoboCop 2 and as the title character in the quirky 1984 sci-fi cult film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.
The three join an already impressive roster that includes Swallow, Christina Ricci (“Wednesday,” Casper), Vincent D'Onofrio (“Daredevil,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”), “Star Trek” franchise standouts Ethan Peck and Anson Mount, “The Office” trio of Kate Flannery, Oscar Nuñez and Leslie David Baker and the stars of “Trailer Park Boys” Mike Smith, John Paul Tremblay and Robb Wells at FAN EXPO Cleveland.

Concert Review: Alvvays

In June 2015 (which now seems like a lifetime ago), I saw Alvvays at Brighton Music Hall (read my concert review here). I won tickets from RadioBBC and at the time I wasn’t as familiar with them as I am now. Their 2014 self-titled debut (my #31 album of the 2010s) spawned the near perfect single “Marry Me Archie”, my #3 Song of 2014 and one of the best of the 2010s. The band even signed my CD at the merch booth! Since the last time I saw them, I’ve gotten to cover their music: The band’s 2017 album Antisocialites (read my 4 star review here and my #8 Album of 2017 and #18 of the 2010s) was even better and it spawned another near perfect single “In Undertow”, my #4 Song of 2017 and one of the best of the 2010s. Just last month I got to review their newest album Blue Rev (4 out of 5 stars if you’re curious). Now the Canadian band is headlining a tour at much larger venues than their 2015 tour. I got to see them at Roadrunner (one of my favorite new Boston venues).

Seeing this band now was almost like looking at the height chart you have as a child, where you mark how much you’ve grown since last time you checked. When I saw them in 2015, I wrote that they “brought their dream-like pop sound. I loved it. These kids have what it takes to really capture the Alternative Nation of today. Songs I didn’t even know that well, seemed familiar as they played. I can not wait to see what this band does next.” Seeing what they have done since then, this is the band going bigger. Alvvays has not just been indie pop, but there have been shades of noise pop coming through in a big way. The band’s sound has also lent itself to visuals and that comes across in their live shows with videos projected behind them onstage. Some had a cool 80s vibe that worked with their songs.

Since 2015, the band’s line up has changed. Drummer Phil MacIsaac left in 2016 replaced by Sheridan Riley and bassist Brian Murphy left in 2021 replaced by Abbey Blackwell. This entire lineup was firing on all cylinders this show! They noted that it was the last show of this leg of the tour and all the fondness they have for Boston. But the secret weapon in this band has always (not pun intended) been singer / guitarist Molly Rankin. The one complaint I have is how short the show was. Alvvays took the stage at 9PM and at 10PM they were doing what they called their last song, before the encores. The whole show was over around 10:15PM. I know the band doesn’t have an album over 40 minutes or a song longer than 5 minutes, but nonetheless I kind of wanted the show to go on way longer. The group played all their standards, but it was cool that “Marry Me Archie” and “In Undertow” weren’t the encores. I can’t wait to see what this band does next time they come to town!

thoughts on when we were young festival
when we were young festival is the festival of every emo kid’s dreams. isn’t it? i, like every other kid, lost my damn mind when i saw the lineup. i didn’t think it was real until altpress reposted it. it’s like a resurrection of warped tour, just for one day. it’s almost too good to be true.
i think it is too good to be true, actually. one day? for over 60 bands? they can’t possibly expect to fit so many bands into 12 hours, on three stages. warped tour sets were about 30 mins, with about 15-30 mins in between sets to reset the stage, depending on the size of the band and how much gear needs to be moved around. in order to fit 60-70 bands into 12 hours on 3 stages, each band would barely even get half an hour, not including the reset time between sets. this isn’t even accounting for my chemical romance and paramore, the big-bill headliners, and the 5 other big names that should get longer set times. how the ever-loving fuck are they expecting this to work?
another issue that jumps out at me is the ticket prices and tiers. i wasn’t able to look at the festival itself’s website for whatever reason, but a nationalworld article gave a lot of details about the tiers of tickets. baseline general admission is a staggering $224.99. GA+ is $399.99 for tier 1, $409.99 for tier 2, and $419.99 for tier 3. GA+ for over $100 more than GA includes air conditioned bathrooms and a special entry lane. i’m sorry, but that’s fucking ridiculous. ridiculous. the ticket price for a warped tour stop in oregon in 2017 was anywhere between $29-49 from what i found, and that’s for access to the whole lineup, all day. there are ViP tiers for wwwf as well, with fun perks and extras. the top tier, a nice shady vip cabana with quick entry and other fancy perks, for 10 people is TWELVE FUCKiNG THOUSAND DOLLARS. WHAT? WHAT???
the festival is sponsored and organized by live nation, a well-known and pretty reputable company. however, there are speculations about disaster impending. it seems like an emo version of the fyre festival, a scammy disaster leaving people out hundreds, even thousands of dollars. live nation also organized astroworld, travis scott’s bloodbath festival that more or less went down in flames. i’ve seen jokes about the wwwf being a way for ln to recoup their losses after astroworld. this is entirely possible, honestly.
i’m usually a fan of live nation, i work with ticketmaster at my concert venue so i usually think highly of live nation. i’m skeptical though. it seems too good to be true, genuinely. i guess we’ll see.

It is funny how coachella motivations are taking shape in just a few hours. There is always a reason and a plan, just to maximize the impact, whichever it is.
We know tickets for the festival were already sold out 2 years ago, this is common with many festivals now since they take place cyclicly every year. The tickets haven’t been necessarily refunded back to holders.
So goals are in further stages.
The festival itself suffered very bad press the moment it was revealed that owner and founder Philip Anschut was directing earnings to Anti-LGBT causes. So it’s very convenient to have a top A artist that is “gay-friendly” welcoming the community and instantly spreading it out globally.
Also, by April HS3 will be out; for those who doesn’t know it Coachella offers rock, pop, indie, hip hop and electronic dance music, so it would be an interesting opportunity for Harry to enlarge his audience. I am sure his new album image will fit into this too.

Harry has been involved with UMPG since his solo career kicked off.
UMPG pushed the day before Coachella’s make an avoidable link. The relationship in our mindset is done, they turned Harry into head of lineup. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 even though it was sold, he jumped to be the BIG name of Coachella 2022

MORGAN LANDER On KITTIE's Future Plans: 'You'll Be Seeing Us Around A Little More'
KITTIE vocalist/guitarist Morgan Lander has hinted more activity for the band following the previously announced reunion shows at Las Vegas's When We Were Young festival. Joining Morgan and her sister, drummer Mercedes Lander, at those shows in the fall will be guitarist Tara McLeod and bassist Ivana "Ivy" Vujic.
Asked in a new interview with the "Talk Toomey" podcast what led to Vujic returning to KITTIE for the upcoming dates, Lander said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Ivy played on two of our albums, the last two albums that we did. She left the band right before the very last big tour that we ended up doing; she did the Soundwave Festival [in Australia] with us in 2012, and those were the last shows that we did with her. And she just kind of settled into her life, started a family, got married, and so that's sort of been what she's been up to. But Ivy's a metal girl at heart and she's always been super, super easygoing about stuff. I just sent her a message and I was, like, 'Hey, can we talk?' And we had a really, really great phone call and I just sort of explained the situation, explained what was going on. I asked her if she'd be into doing it, and she was, like, 'Yeah. Sounds great.' … It's very much one of those things where you don't talk that often anymore, you don't see each other that often, but then, when you all get together again, that chemistry and that vibe is always there."
Morgan continued: "I feel like that lineup of KITTIE in particular was always very super pro, super chill — no stress, no drama. Just, like, 'You know what? We're gonna go out there and we're gonna sound amazing.'
"She's an incredible bass player. I don't think that Ivy gets enough credit. She is absolutely incredible. So it's gonna be great."
As for whether KITTIE may have some other things in the works beyond When We Were Young, Morgan said: "We've got the festival — lots to look forward to with that. There may be some other things maybe coming down the pike — one or two things — but you have to watch [the KITTIE social media]. We might have one or two cool things coming down the pike, but for now those are the only dates that we have. And we're super looking forward to them. And I think this is just the beginning of… You'll be seeing us around a little more."
Vujic joined KITTIE in 2008 and appeared on the band's fifth studio CD, 2009's "In The Black". She also wrote and recorded bass for KITTIE's sixth album, 2011's "I've Failed You".
When We Were Young will be held on the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on the Strip on October 22, October 23 and October 29.
Officials said the "emo" festival will feature the same lineup on all three dates, with the exception of Alex G replacing Wolf Alice on October 29, and La Dispute will not perform on October 29.
The lineup also includes MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, PARAMORE, AFI, THE USED, BRING ME THE HORIZON, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, ALKALINE TRIO, MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA, THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS, AVRIL LAVIGNE, WOLF ALICE, STORY OF THE YEAR, JIMMY EAT WORLD and many others.
When the lineup for When We Were Young was first revealed, KITTIE said: "Thanks for your patience with our silence friends. The truth is we've been in full on crisis mode the past week and weren't sure if we’d actually be able to make this happen but it's true and we'll be there to melt your face off and we hope you got your tickets."
After the third When We Were Young date was announced, KITTIE wrote: "Third show added! Super stoked that @whenwewereyoungfest has decided to add yet another date! October 29th 2022. We'll see you there…tickets on sale January 31st".
KITTIE has not performed since its reunion show at London Music Hall in the band's native London, Ontario in 2017, celebrating the group's documentary "Kittie: Origins/Evolutions".
Last month, the original lineup of KITTIE — Morgan, Mercedes, Fallon Bowman (guitar) and Tanya Candler (bass) — reunited for an online chat to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of its gold-certified 2000 debut album, "Spit".
Candler left KITTIE after the release of "Spit" in order to finish high school and was replaced by Talena Atfield.
Bowman exited KITTIE in 2001 and started her own industrial/electronic project, AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT.
After KITTIE completed the touring cycle for 2011's "I've Failed You" album, the band entered a long period of inactivity during which Morgan focused on a marketing job for a chain of fitness clubs while Mercedes worked in real estate and more recently at a software company. The group also began work on a career-spanning documentary, "Origins/Evolutions", which finally saw the light of day in 2018 via Lightyear Entertainment in North America.
"I've Failed You" sold 3,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 178 on The Billboard 200 chart.

The Retaliators will open Screamfest® LA on October 12th for its North American premiere with a red carpet prior to the screening. West Coast premieres at the festival include a joint production between the US, Mexico, and Venezuela, Exorcism of God which follows an American priest working in Mexico who, due to a botched exorcism, carries a dark secret with him; hailing from Ireland, Let the Wrong One In dives into the complications of family ties when a vampire is discovered in the family; Erik Bloomquist follows twins who spend a night at a remote inn to investigate their missing father in Night at the Eagle Inn; North American distribution rights to the Argentinian The Returned (Los Que Vuelven) - which follows a woman in 1919 prays to a mythical deity to resurrect her stillborn son - were acquired in a new venture between Peter Block of A Bigger Boat and Seth Nagel, Scott Einbinder and Garrick Dion of 5X Media; What Josiah Saw explores a farmhouse haunted by the past; Alone With You stars Emily Bennett, Emma Myles, and fan-favorite Barbara Crampton in a twisted tale of memory and horror unfolding over a romantic homecoming for a distant girlfriend; and When I Consume You by Perry Blackshear where two siblings get more than they bargained for when hunting a shadowy stalker.
The festival will also feature a Special Presentation of Daniel Farrands’s Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeyman starring Peyton List and Lydia Hearst, which follows the notorious killer through a little known chapter of her life in Deland, Florida.
“After a challenging year for cinema, we are excited to return to our home at the TCL Chinese Theatre for our latest lineup of frights,'' says festival founder Rachel Belofsky. “While last year’s drive-ins allowed us to continue to celebrate horror films as a community, we have missed the magic of the traditional theatrical experience.”

Elsie Fest 2019: A Broadway Music Festival Sans Broadway
Another year, another Elsie Fest. This year marks the Broadway festival's fifth anniversary, and it also happens to be the fourth Elsie Fest I've been able to attend. Coming off a the high of 2018's festival, this year's event had some mighty big shoes to fill. Did it succeed? In a word? No. I had fun last night, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't help but be disappointed by several aspects of the event. Let me break it down for you.
For those who haven't been to Elsie Fest, there's a rhythm to whole thing that's important to explain right at the top. The seating at the venue is, for the most part, general admission so people line up well before the gates open to secure the best spots near the stage. I joined the line about 2 hours before opening and, therefore, managed to snag a pretty good spot. I laid out my blanket, sat down, and took part in the hour-long showtunes sing-a-long lead, once again, by our favorite dynamic duo from Marie's Crisis. This hour of fun was a highlight for me; it always is. But this year especially it proved to be one of the few celebrations of Broadway to be found at this Broadway music festival. More on that later.
As the hour came to a close, and the guys from Marie's Crisis were wrapping things up on stage, I took a look around the venue. I couldn't help but notice that it wasn't as full as it had been the year before (or the year before that). That observation got me thinking, why was attendance down this year? After a bit of brainstorming, I came up with a few potential causes.
First up, timing. Elsie Fest has always been on a Sunday. Since the show moved to Central Park back in 2017, it has specifically been the Sunday smack dab in the middle of Columbus Day Weekend. For any international readers, Columbus Day is a federal holiday (like a bank holiday) here in the US that falls on the second Monday in October. So, for the past two years, Elsie Fest was been held in the middle of a 3 day weekend. Which meant it was generally easy for folks in the tri state area to make the trip into the city. Also, falling on a Sunday evening meant it was easy to get Broadway folks (even those currently in shows) to stop by since most shows only run a matinee on Sundays and typically have Mondays off. By choosing a Saturday this year, the organizers made it harder for some regular attendees to come out (people tend to have things to do on Saturdays plus, for some, it's the Sabbath), and they cut down on their talent pool significantly because they wouldn't be able to get anyone currently working on or off Broadway.
This segues nicely into the second reason for the potential dip in ticket sales, namely the featured performers. There weren't really any big names this year. Last year, for example, we had Sutton Foster, Joshua Henry, Grant Gustin, Matthew Morrison, Alex Newell, Nick Jonas, Zachary Levi, Casey Cott, Rufus Wainwright, Jodi Benson, and performances from Be More Chill and The Prom. This year, up until about a week before, the only big-ish name attached to the show was Gavin Creel. I say a week before because last week they announced Cynthia Erivo. I'm guessing she was added last minute in a desperate attempt to sell tickets. Which sort of worked, the venue wasn't empty, but kinda proves my point. By having this on a Saturday they weren't able to bring in the talent that they had in years past and, without those big names, they weren't able to bring in as many attendees.
Finally, the third reason for the lackluster ticket sales was New York Comic Con. This doesn't require much in the way of explanation. This weekend was New York Comic Con. Lots of the big panels, sales, and cosplay events fall on Saturday, and it's not a stretch to assume that NYCC and Elsie Fest are drawing from similar, if not the same, pools of people. So that probably hurt sales a bit as well. Though I suspect the two other reasons were larger contributing factors.
Okay, back to the show itself. After the sing-a-long, we were shown a quick trailer for High School Musical: The Musical – The Series. (You are not misreading what I wrote, that's the show's actual title) After the trailer, two of the kids came out to sing Breaking Free. Their performance was super cute, and I was reminded of the fact that HSM debuted in early 2006. Which means that all the tweens and teens who grew up with this film series are now fully-fledged adults. And they were out in the audience, in full force, singing along. It was a sweet moment to witness. And, not going to lie, I was singing along as well. I have a soft spot for the series myself. It'll always remind me of my first year of teaching. My students were obsessed HSM, and I was right there with them.
Next, Dyllon Burnside came out and performed an RnB version of Luck Be a Lady from Guys and Dolls. This number was okay. Dyllon's got a great voice and the woman who came up with him to dance as Luck was talented. But the performance had a rocky start because there wasn't an introduction. Someone just said into a mic, here's Dyllon Burnside, and then it started. I remember standing there thinking to myself, “Who's Dyllon Burnside?” I googled him today and found out he's on that Ryan Murphy show, Pose. It might have been a good idea to give that info up front. Anyhow, like I said, his performance was okay. RnB is not my cup of tea, but he had a good voice and a commanding stage presence so I could put up with that style for a single song.
After Dyllon, the composer of The Lightning Thief, Rob Rokicki, took the stage with a few backup singers. He performed Good Kid, The Lightning Thief's opening number. This performance was an example of how the timing of this year's festival hurt its lineup. Rob's a composer with a passable voice, not performer. And this song needs a cast of performers to be done properly. Unfortunately, Rob’s talented cast couldn't be there because it was Saturday night, and they had an evening show to do over at the Longacre. So we, the audience, were stuck with Rob. No offense to Rob, he seemed like a sweet guy, but he's not a performer. He should have been there to introduce his cast, not perform in their place.
After Rob, came the first set of the evening, a series of songs performed by Anais Mitchell, the composer/creator of Hadestown. I should probably begin this paragraph by explaining that I have not drunk the Hadestown kool aid. I have seen show, I did not like the show, but that is a matter for another post. Going into this set, I figured Anais would do a song from Hadestown and then take a few other Broadway tunes and put her folksy spin on them. That is not what happened. She sang 4 songs from Hadestown, and then a medley of songs from her newest album. To put it bluntly, her set was bad. Even if I liked Hadestown, which I do not, I would still have to be honest and say that she really missed the point of the festival. She was there to celebrate Broadway in general, not her show in particular. It'd be like Lin Manuel Miranda showing up and performing a whole bunch of songs from Hamilton. I mean, that'd be AMAZING, but I would have to be honest and admit that he would also have missed the point. What she should have done was a song from Hadestown, probably at the beginning, and then pick other Broadway songs. She could have told stories about showtunes that evoked special memories for her or demonstrated how certain showtunes might have folk elements hidden within them. What we didn't need was an ad for Hadestown/her latest album, but that was what we got. It was a real shame.
After Anais, Ariana DeBose took the stage. Thankfully, they gave her an introduction this time. Ariana's not a name yet, but that may change after Spielberg's West Side Story opens next year. (She's playing Anita) She kicked off her set with an RnB version of Shall We Dance from The King and I. Ariana is one of the artists who's been working on the R&H Goes Pop project on YouTube. Again, RnB is not my genre, but it was a good way to raise the energy there in the venue (as it at plummeted during the previous set) and to showcase her talent. Ariana has great tone, an impressive range, and real stage presence. So while I didn't enjoy the song itself, I was impressed with her performance overall. The next song she did was Invisible by Jason Robert Brown. It's a song off his latest album that he wrote for the Ronald McDonald House. This song was also done in an RnB style and, at this point, I started to worry that her whole set would be like this. Her next number was a medley of pop songs that dealt with cheating. It was fun, high energy, but again, it wasn’t Broadway. She could easily have used this to transition into Cell Block Tango or any other showtune about cheating (there are quite a few), but, alas, that wasn't the case. Instead, she covered Cold Play's Fix You. It was a great cover, don't get me wrong, but still not a Broadway song. At this point, I'd gone from starting to worry to full on worrying. Where were the showtunes? This is Elsie Fest, it's the one music festival for Broadway fans where their music is celebrated. That's why I love it so much and keep coming back year after year. So when her next number started off with All That Jazz from Chicago, I thought, “Finally!” but then she mashed it up with a few other Broadway/pop songs all sung by various “Divas” and my excitement diminished. Despite all of that, I held out hope that she'd close out her set with a song from West Side Story. It only made sense to get the crowd excited for next year's remake, right? Nope! Instead, she mashed up Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby with Beyonce's Naughty Girl and I think an third song I didn't recognize, who knows? At that point, I was just glad to see her leave the stage; what a disappointment.
Gavin Creel was up next. He began his set with a mashup of hits from all the shows he's been a part of. I heard Put on Your Sunday Clothes, What Do I Need With Love, Ilona, Bad Idea, You and Me (But Mostly Me), and a moment of I've Got Life. This was a great way to kick things off; a reminder of all he's accomplished on Broadway thus far. Next, after a joke about always finding your light onstage, he performed Moving Too Fast from The Last Five Years, a personal favorite of mine. Then he did a song he wrote for a showcase he'll be putting on sometime next year. After that, he sat down at the piano to do Something Wonderful from the King and I. He ended his set with The Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In. Now, I knew he'd do something from Hair. I'd been hoping it'd be either Going Down (if you really want to hear someone gush about his version of that song, check out Seth Rudetsky's review on YouTube, it's delightful) or Where Do I Go?, but he chose the closing number instead. Not a bad decision, but it's not a song that can be performed solo. So, as it came time for the female lead's part in the song, I figured Cynthia or Ariana would come out to join him. That's the sort of thing that happens a lot at Elsie Fest. People will pop into each others sets to help out. Last year, famously, Will Roland, Grant Gustin, and Darren Criss teamed up to do Sincerely, Me during Grant's short set. And who could forget Aaron Tveit popping up during Leslie Odom Jr.'s set to duet with him on What You Own? But, for some unknown reason, Gavin tried to do the whole song by himself which just didn't work. So his strong set ended on kind of a sour note. I will say, Gavin's approach to crafting his setlist was perfect. He chose a good variety showtunes (old and new) and gave us a taste of what might be coming next for him. People working on set lists for next year ought to take notes. My only critique would be the lack of a female voice during his last number. Other than that, flawless.
Next, the cast of the upcoming show, Jagged Little Pill, took the stage. I had been looking forward to their performance as the show's been generating quite a bit of buzz since its out of town tryout last summer in Boston. At last year's Elsie Fest, both The Prom and Be More Chill performed two numbers a piece. So, with that blueprint in mind, I figured Jagged Little Pill would do maybe a lesser known Alanis song first and then end with a big hit. They started their set with Forgiven. It was a lesser known song that utilized the entire cast so it made for a strong opening number. I figured they'd end with something more well know like, You Learn or You Oughta Know. So I was genuinely shocked when they left the stage after only performing one song. What happened to their second song? Did they run out of time? Or, if for some reason they were only allowed one number this year, why did they choose such an obscure song? This was their chance to get the audience fired up for their new show, and by only performing Forgiven, they failed to do that. It was such a bizarre choice.
Cynthia Erivo, the lady of the hour, was up next. I'd missed her set at Elsie Fest 2016 so I was all the more eager to see which songs she'd choose to perform this time around. I figured she'd have to do one from The Color Purple, but the rest was anyone's guess. Would she go modern? Classic? A mix of both? There was no way of know, but I was excited to find out. She came out on stage, full of poise and grace, wearing these adorable cat-eye glasses and greeted the audience in such a sweet way. She seemed genuinely thrilled to see us all. She kicked off her set with Elvis's Can't Help Falling in Love. She sang it beautifully, but it was an odd choice. Then she sang Ain't No Way by Aretha Franklin. Again, she sang it flawlessly; this is Cynthia Erivo we're talking about. Everything she sings could be recorded and used as part of a master class in vocal performance. But where were the the showtunes? We were 0 for 2, and I was starting to get that worried feeling again. Then Darren came onstage with his guitar and accompanied her on Miss Celie's Blues by Quincy Jones. Also not a Broadway song, but it was featured in the film version of The Color Purple so it was a sort of nod to Broadway, I suppose. Then she did One Night Only. Finally, a showtune! Not one that I happen to like, but that point, I was desperate for something, anything. Next, she did a slowed down version of I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston, and I sighed internally. It's not that I don't like the song, I do, but it was yet another pop song. Clearly, no one had given the night's performers any sort of guidance so they were just singing, whatever. Cynthia followed up the Whitney Houston number with Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. If you're thinking to yourself, that's not a showtune either, you would be correct. The Lauper tune was how she ended her set. Again, like everything she performed, she sang it beautifully. My issue with her set was the overall lack of Broadway. This is Elsie Fest, a celebration of Broadway music. As a Broadway fan, that's what I want to hear. If I wanted to hear nothing but oldies, I'd go to an oldies music festival, if I wanted to hear all rock and roll, I'd go to one of those festivals, and so on and so on. I come to Elsie Fest for the showtunes, both old and new.
The last set before Darren's was Michael Feinstein's. Right off the bat, saving Michael's set for so late in the night was a very bad idea. He should have gone first or very nearly first when the audience was fresh and more forgiving. Michael is a very wealthly older gentleman. I don't know how he made his millions, but he was able to buy and open the cabaret club 54 Below so he's clearly got a few pennies tucked away. Maybe he flashed a few of those pennies to get such a prime timeslot, but that was a mistake. The audience was bored to tears by his set. Standing there while he performed I started to feel like the whole night up to that point had been a bit of a lousy dichotomy. Either listen to pop and RnB sung beautifully when all you want to hear are showtunes, or listen to showtunes sung poorly. I was standing there thinking, “Isn't there an option C? Didn't I pay to attend option C?” Yeah, Michael probably had a lovely voice back in the day, but that day has long since passed. He started his set with A Lot of Living to Do and then gave the audience a lecture on why Bye Bye Birdie is so important to the history of musical theater. Next, he did I Only Have Eyes for You from 42nd Street. He'd lost the crowd at that point. People were BORED. Then, after another lecture, he did the St. Louis Blues, badly. Then he put together I Don't Want to be Lonely Tonight with One Less Bell to Answer. The next song he did cannot, apparently, be googled so it will have to remain a mystery. Finally, at long last, he closed out his set with a Frank Sinatra medley. Darren came out to join him, which woke the audience up (some had literally laid down and gone to sleep). Looking back over his set, all 6 songs (5 too many if you ask me), I can't help but draw the conclusion that he gave the organizers of Elsie Fest an inordinate amount of money for a chance to perform. I hope they spend it wisely next year.
At long last, it was time for Darren's set. He had to go on 20 minutes late so we'll never know which songs he was forced to cut from the lineup. All I do know is that the 7 songs he chose were all winners. He kicked things off with a Glee song, Everybody Wants to Rule the World. It was excellent, pop at its finest. Next, he did Waving Through a Window and the crowd lost their minds. Fear not, I was right there with them; cheering and grinning like an idiot. If the crowed seemed keyed up during the Dear Evan Hansen number, they found a new stratosphere of joy to reach when he next performed Wait for It from Hamilton. It felt like suffering through all the bad sets that night had been worth it, almost. Next he pulled out his guitar and started to perform Wig in a Box and, I kid you not, I almost started crying. It had been a long night, full of disappointments, and Darren's set was pure perfection. He then paused, midway through the song, to bring out Lena Hall. What a treat! She sang her verse powerfully and then, Darren paused again to introduce John Cameron Mitchell, and the three of them brought the song home. I felt so euphoric at that point that I lack the words to properly describe it. What a historic moment! How do you follow something like that up? By taking things back to Hogwarts! First Jamie Lyn Beatty joined Darren on stage to perform Harry from AVPM. Next, Joey Richter and Lauren Lopez performed Granger Danger to riotous applause. Then, for the final number of Elsie Fest 2019, the entire Star Kid crew came out do do Goin' Back to Hogwarts. It was such a special moment; being in that crowd of fans singing along 10 years after the musical blew up online. After team Star Kid took their final bows, Darren thanked us and said he hoped to see us back next year.
Final thoughts, I hope to see him back next year too. But I also hope the organizers of Elsie Fest take a good hard look at how things went this year, and make some changes. First off, the festival needs to be held on a Sunday. To put on a festival, you need attendees and performers, and you're not going to get enough of either on a Saturday, you're just not. Second, they need to start booking talent now. They need names to bring people in. Because, even if fans are available, they're sure as heck not making the trip to see Michael Feinstein, someone who will be in a Spielberg film next year, and a kid from Pose. I'll even leave a few suggestions here: Ben Platt, Jonathan Groff, Lin Manuel Miranda, Jessie Mueller, Alex Brightman, Ethan Slater, Renee Elise Golsberry, Telly Leung, Eva Noblezada, George Salazar, Jenn Colella, etc. Third and finally, they need to have a good long think about what they want Elsie Fest to be. If they want it to remain a celebration of Broadway, then they need to book performers who are committed to that vision. If they want to change the vision, they need to let the audience know ahead of time so they can make an informed decision when buying tickets. To be perfectly honest, I felt a bit duped this year. I had paid for one thing but had gotten something else instead. So, there you are, Elsie Fest organizers. Do those three things between now and next October, and you'll have a successful festival in 2020.

2019 PHILIP K. DICK SCIENCE FICTION FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES BI-COASTAL EVENT IN NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA
The Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival, the annual festival that honors legendary novelist Philip K. Dick through the dynamic power of science fiction film, is returning for its seventh outing with a full schedule of events. For the first time since its inception, the festival will hold a bi-coastal gathering presenting a lineup of films, premieres and panels for audiences in New York City, Los Angeles and Santa Ana, CA. The ambitious endeavor will provide a platform for independent filmmakers who tackle a variety of themes that empower the narratives of Philip K. Dick, whose work continues to serve as a profound mark on the literary and entertainment worlds.
The festival will open in New York City on Thursday, March 7th and Saturday, March 9th. Following its long history in New York, the festival regards the city as an exemplary location to utilize science fiction as a means of connecting with audiences. "We have developed a strong following here," said Daniel Abella, the founder and director of the festival. "Our fans have become loyal supporters of our films and platform so we acknowledge their support by bringing back great sci-fi year after year." Features include Saku Sakamoto's ARAGNE: Sign of Vermillion about a young woman's discovery of a mysterious class of insects and the U.S. premiere of Taking Tiger Mountain Revisited, the remastered version of Kent Smith and Tom Huckabee's post-apocalyptic 1983 film starring Bill Paxton. Then, a lone survivor searches for answers after the human race vanishes in the World Premiere of John Norby's Assimilation.
The west coast edition of the festival will run in partnership with Media Arts Santa Ana (MASA), a non-profit organization that supports its community's cultural empowerment through special resources and initiatives. "We are excited to bring the festival to Santa Ana and allow fans to see some great films," said Victor Payan, the director of MASA who worked with the festival to organize a divine salute to its namesake, a resident of the city in his final years where he wrote several of his last major works. "This will help create discussion about how Santa Ana and Orange County influenced Philip K. Dick's vision and celebrate one of Santa Ana's most treasured and influential artists."
Festivities begin on Thursday, March 14th in Los Angeles with the city serving as a prime destination to bring the festival. "Blade Runner is set in L.A. in 2019," said Abella when referring to the 1982 adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? "There is no better honor than by holding the festival in the very city and year depicted in one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time." Screening titles include Matthew Evan Balz's Corvus, which follows a woman's perilous efforts to build a machine capable of hypnosis and the depiction of extant technology in Emily Dean's Andromeda about an android's awakening of human emotions. Closing the night is Josh Gibson's atmospheric Pig Film about a woman's work on a hog farm during the impending end of the world.
The festival then opens in Santa Ana, CA from Friday, March 15th through Sunday, March 17th. Dick Multicultural Dystopian/Sci Fi Short Film Challenge, a short film competition that invited participants to develop projects that analyze contemporary life in view of themes associated with Philip K. Dick. The challenge also evaluated Philip K. Dick's cultural influence on the Santa Ana community and to encourage the representation of multicultural stories by traditionally underrepresented sci-fi filmmakers. "Anyone who has ever felt alienated should look up to PKD," said Abella. "Because the heroes in his stories were everyday people attempting to retain their dignity in a progressively dehumanized world." The festival's expansion has also furthered its commitment to feature a more inclusive brand of filmmaking with 31 percent of the official selections directed or co-directed by women and minority filmmakers. Many films are seen from the perspectives of racially and gender diverse characters. my electric forest experience
I say this about a lot of music festivals, but Electric Forest has to be my favorite one so far. It was also one of the most tiring festivals, seeing that it is five days long while camping, but worth every second!
Although I am an EDM fanatic, I do enjoy other genres as well. I had always dreamt about going to this specific festival because it is so diverse. EF was two weekends this year and I made a last minute decision in May that I was just going to go for it! As I was planning on buying two tickets on my own for the second weekend, a good festival friend, Mariana, contacted me. She mentioned that in past festivals she has gone in as media and gotten the chance to interview some of her favorite artists. This year she happened to have an extra media pass and wanted to see if I could help with some interviews and tag along on this journey. It was meant to be! I purchased a ticket for my boyfriend, who I drag to every concert you could possibly think of. (Who else is going to hold my hoop when I get lost in the crowd!) And with that I was ready to go! We decided to make it a road trip starting all the way from Miami since I wanted to test out my “new” car. That was probably not the best idea. Started off great but hardly making it into Georgia the car broke down and all four of us were left stranded. It put us a bit behind schedule but we weren’t going to let that stop us! But that is a story that I’ll save for another day..
This was my second camping event, the first being in Washington at The Gorge for ABGT250 in September 2017. I was ready for any weather. So, forgetting it was still summer, I expected it to be a bit chilly since it was Michigan. Never been of course. It was the opposite. The weather was amazing just like people. It’s almost like it’s a holiday on its own with everyone celebrating from day one giving you high fives and hugs saying “Happy Forest” even at the lowest point of a festival...waiting in line! Everyone made you feel so welcomed and even though it was my first time there, I felt like I was home.
The forest has so much to offer. It’s much more than just music. Whether you want to splash it up at the Gold Rush Water Park near by, get lost in the forest with the breath taking art installations, or participate in a scavenger hunt. The options are never ending! I got to jam out at a silent disco, barter goods at the Trading Post, and even earned Eco points by helping clean up the commonly shared areas. By the way you can redeem those for incredible prizes! Come sit with us under the Roochute and come together as a team and along the way I’m sure you will discover new music and be ready to shuffle the night away.
I was more familiar with the lineup of first weekend but decided to go the second one to explore more. I got to see artist such as The String Cheese Incident, Rüfüs Du Sol, Get Real, Testpilot, and as I am a sucker for trance I could not miss the chance to see Lane 8! I love me some trance! As part of my experience with a media pass, I got to record an interview with Jauz! The first weekend he actually stayed on the camp grounds as he expressed he wanted to fully experience the Electric Forest life just like everyone else. He spoke to us a little bit about a 55 city bus tour that would take place after Electric Forest on which he would be showcasing his record label: Bite This. Similar to Skepsis, I discovered that Jauz is also very influenced by the U.K. and would like to bring some of their musical style back to the states and bridge them together. He was very easy to talk to and I for one can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in the near future.
Mariana is a EF veteran and shared with me some of the things to do in and about the forest. One thing she told me was to not limit myself to a schedule. Let yourself and your mind wander, listen and discover the forest. I am glad to have taken her advice and not rushed anywhere.
The venue itself is as big as the hearts of all its attending fans, so big in fact that I unfortunately had to miss out on riding the hot air balloons and a few other attractions. On the last day, as we were entering the venue, they had to close down for a couple of hours due to a storm that was approaching. Everyone was instructed to go back to the campgrounds to secure their belongings as stages throughout the venue were doing the same. The winds were a bit strong and our camp site did get a little bit wet but that did not stop us from having a good time. The skies cleared up soon and everything was back up and working at full swing in a short couple of hours. Once the festival ended, we weren’t ready to pack it in just yet, we headed to the RV camp grounds where we sang and danced well into the morning at the RV after parties.
Electric Forest helped me find a new love for nature. When we would get tired we would just take out our hammocks and lay between the trees and just take everything in and watch the many talented people of the forest. Whether you’re a beginner or the next Vanesa Seco or Brookelynn Bley there is a zero judgment vibe throughout the grounds which makes for a phenomenal lights and sound show featuring you. It’s a festival, I would strongly recommend, that everyone who’s ever been to a rave has to experience at least once and who knows, maybe you’ll find your next favorite artist!
