Do we become so lost in the patterns and rhythms of our everyday lives that we fool ourselves into believing that they might somehow last forever?

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew is probably the best contemporary literary work to have ever come out of Singapore, and despite winning an Eisner, it will probably never receive the national recognition it deserves because it is a "comic book" and it challenges assumptions about national history and the price of political pragmatism.

Amidst all the craziness of San Diego Comic-Con, with its plethora of movies, shows, and hype, it’s easy to forget the reason the convention exists in the first place: comic books.  Luckily, the Eisner Awards is here to remind us what Comic Con is really about, and highlight the best in the comic book industry.

26022017 I really like this week's spread! There's something about having all the boxes neatly laid out that makes me feel much calmer. The only issue is that I don't have much space left to doodle but hey, functionality > aesthetics. I read two books this month and they both broke my heart and completely blew me away.

when you get this you have to post 3 books or songs you would recommend then send this ask to 10 of your favourite followers 🌃
Book recs from across the years, tilted towards the more obscure:
You've read The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, right? A fictional cartoonist is a delightfully meta way to cover that timespan of Singapore's history and it left me with a feeling of oh, you're allowed to do this???
Santa Olivia! My original rec post remains accurate, I should give it another reread, I'm due for one
This is probably the slot for a long biography. I will cheat and let both Turing and Grant share the slot. I like that the Turing bio is so detailed it goes through the math of some of his work, and I found the Grant one very accessible despite knowing literally nothing of the man beforehand. (Seriously. I'd wandered into the library hoping it would have Chernow's Washington bio and instead it only had Grant's. I was like sure, why the hell not, and ended up learning a bunch about a president who was a very good general but very prone to being scammed and also the dude legit just wanted to be a math professor after he graduated West Point, I did not expect that.)

A few years back I drew this promotional image to help get the word around about @sonny_liew ‘s graphic novel “The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye”. If you’ve never picked up the book, you really should. Sonny is a genius with skills that intimidate the hell out of me. A huge book, packed with amazing art & words. #robot #kidcartoonist #theartofcharliechanhockchye #sonnyliew #imagination #giantrobot #robothero #robbmommaerts #inkdrawing #cartoonistsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CCtLL3zl65k/?igshid=1amx8bxldb0ex

Ooh: a question. what are your favourite comics (other than duck comics ofc). comic nerd solidarity!
COMIC NERDS!!
Oh man I love a lot of comics. In no particular order I love Tove Jansson’s Moomin, Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy, O Human Star, Michael DeForge’s work, Jillian Tamaki’s work Emil Ferris’s My Favorite Thing is Monsters (seriously A MUST READ!), Anna & Froga, Barefoot Gen, Walt & Skeezix (its from the 1920s but my god its really cute), My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness and the sequels My Solo Exchange Diary vol. 1 and 2, Jason Lutes Berlin, The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye (Another Must Read), Osamu Tezuka (of course), haven’t read all of Guy Delisle’s stuff but Hostage and Pyongyang were really good, Oh my god Bone of course (I’ve got a gorgeous signed copy of the full color hardback omnibus), Bryan Lee O’Malley of Scott Pilgrim fame, Peanuts (does this even need mentioning), Wandering Son or Hourou Musuko in Japanese, Oyasumi PunPun, uhhh and like a million other comics as well. I like old stuff like Krazy Kat and Little Nemo because I’m a comics history nerd. Gee, just so much stuff.

For 'not from US ask': 1., 11. And 25.??
1. favourite place in your country?
Hmm. This is such a difficult question lol. I think I’ll give a blanket shout out to all our national parks (which are much smaller and much more ‘artificial’ than what you’d get elsewhere). It’s hot and humid in Singapore all year around, so not always pleasant to be out in the sun, but I think our parks are well maintained by hardworking, passionate people.
11. favourite native writer/poet?
Maybe Boey Kim Cheng, a writer who lives in Australia now. He has a great book of essays called Between Stations. I should also mention Sonny Liew – I wrote about his graphic novel The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye for my masters dissertation.
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country?
Not particularly, but I do consider myself to have been born into a lot of privilege within Singapore’s context.
“hi I’m not from the US” ask set
