“I was wrong, and I’m sorry.” 

It’s a novel enough thing, hearing Helen Magnus apologize, that it gives him pause. He bites back the hurt from earlier, trying to reassure her. “You weren’t wrong,” he points out gently. “You are 159 years old, and I have only known you for three.” 

She shakes her head, brushing off his assurances far too easily. “And in those three years, you’ve come to know me better than some have in 50. I shouldn’t have implied otherwise.”

His instinct is to once again try to comfort her, but-yeah, what she said did sting, especially when he was only doing what she’d asked him, if not in as many words, to do many times over the years: look out for her. She’s been taking care of herself for years, but when she gets too immersed in her work, taking care of herself tends to go to the wayside. She relies on his honesty, his bluntness, in this as much as anything else.

“Why did you?” Maybe she needs to talk about it. Maybe he needs to hear it.

With a sigh, she runs her hand through her hair. “Lots of reasons. I’ve done... Many things, Will. Things I regret. Seeing Adam reminded me of those things. Besides...” She hesitates, eyeing him in a way he doesn’t quite like; as if she’s trying to decide how much she trusts him. (She hasn’t looked at him like that in years. Why now?) “... Truthfully, I haven’t been feeling entirely well today.”

There’s a warning in her gaze, and he knows if he follows his instincts-if he suggests she go lay down, let him handle things for awhile, and maybe run a diagnostic on herself just to be safe-she’ll shut him out once more.

Instead, he reaches out, patting her arm. “Let me know if you need anything,” he says simply, and the smile she gives him cuts through the ache of the past few hours, warm and full, all for him.

“I will,” she lies, and he pretends to believe her.

He’s still going to run her bloodwork, though. Just to be safe.

Can We Talk About Teen Titans?

Particularly that one episode were another alien spends time mocking and calling Starfire a "trog"?

I thought it was an awesome episode as a kid, but it wasn't until I was an adult that I realized just how powerful and significant that episode was.

And it was especially great, to me, that the first person Starfire confesses to is Cyborg, a black man. Cyborg, who almost more than anyone on the team, would immediately understand and emphasize with that quiet sense of helpless rage and weary resignation. Who would recognize that sense of unfairness, of being labeled despite your heroics, of being belittled and talked down to.
