Saturday, February 1, 2020 Tharbar gate hotel was an oasis in the middle of dirt, dust, and garbage. It was a beautiful, calm, and clean place away from poverty. Here, locals burn their daily garbage and plastics. Since we walked through a layer of dust and smoke everyday, we have been coughing a lot! Simon had a luxury bus lined up for the five hour trip to Mandalay. The operations manager for the hotel at tharbar gate, one of the fanciest in town, convinced him to use a shared taxi service. He said we would be in a minivan going from hotel door to hotel door with 3-5 other passengers also headed to Mandalay. Simon agreed, paid the fee, and we waited for our ride to arrive. We were shocked when a pick up truck arrived with several people and their luggage piled in the back and we were told to get in. I asked "are we taking this all the way to Mandalay?" The hotel staff said that we were going to transfer to a car, so off we went. Obviously, we had a different vision of shared taxi. Soon enough, we discovered that it was a small bus with 19 seats and up to 27 people on board with luggage filling the aisle. I felt like we were headed toward another bus trip from hell, but it wasn't too bad. The ride was erratic and we were launched into the air as the bus bounced over holes and bumps in the road. We bounced so much that my fit bit congratulated me for achieving my 15000 step for a day. Isn't that interesting! Our bus driver was using the horn a lot and wouldn't stop for anything or anybody! Eventually we got to Mandalay at dark and a small tuk tuk took the two of us to our next hotel. We went out for a small meal and drinks then settled in for the night.
