INTERESTING QUESTION okay so it's hard for me to give a good answer to this because there's so much of everything especially with m/f stuff and I haven't seen a lottttt of mainstream media with gay characters in it. 90% of the time I'm knee-deep in the gay swamp hunting for something only I can conceive of lol. Boy is protector, girl is protected. Boy is haunted and suffering, girl is vaguely there for him. The female character's development is usually the one that's suffering the most. The characters don't get to connect on a deep emotional level. Their relationship doesn't feel like a relationship between living and breathing humans.

M/M and F/F relationships most often get held back by the writer being overly aware of the characters being gay, and unable to see past whatever that means to them. They're caught writing just A Gay Relationship, rather than a relationship between individuals, between living and breathing humans.

There's the stereotypical assignment of gender roles for both sets. There's the stereotypes in general.

M/M relationships often get put in this position where they're doing unnatural things that are meant to be funny or to titillate female viewers.

F/F relationships are often just like "Look, two girls. They like each other. That's it." And this is just a feeling I have, but especially with the heavy use of trope talk in discussing media, it seems like a lot of gay relationship writing has been taking this bent where characters are just doing things because it is the writer's idea of what the gay characters or the lesbian characters are ~supposed~ to be doing. It's not very unique or thoughtful in that sense.

Alsooo I feel likeeee it's much harder to find gay stories where the characters fall for each other very slowly, than it is to find M/F stories like that :( To my perception, gay relationships are much more often just, bam, love/attraction at first sight. Which isn't inherently bad, but I envy all the M/F stories out there (especially the ones that are actually good and make sense) where the characters don't express ANYYYY attraction when they first meet, but after spending a lot of time with each other and going on a bunch of adventures, they slowly fall for each other. (Attention to those reading this: If you know some good sapphic fiction like this then please tell me :) I'll be honest I'm very picky so your rec might go to waste but I love having options and checking stuff out) Ehhh, though I know slow-burn is something people talk about a lot right now including with gay fiction, so what do I know!
