NFL Week 4 Preview And GOTW

Week 4 is basically defined by pick em’ games. Most of these games just feel like absolute toss-ups, and a lot of that is the fact that it’s only week 4, but you know the feeling of just not being sure about some of these teams.

Like the Monday Night NFC West game between the Rams and the 9ers, where the Rams appear like favorites because they’ve played better this year but history suggest that the 9ers at home, combined with Shanahan’s record against Sean McVay, makes them the smarter pick.

Thursday Night Football offers the undefeated Miami Dolphins and the ever-tough, Tua Tagovailoa travelling to Cincinatti to play, what appears to be a resurgent Bengals team and another tough game to pick.

And of all those, there is simply no game that is more difficult to pick than this week’s Game Of The Week.

NFL WEEK 4 Game Of The Week: Buffalo Bills VS Baltimore Ravens

Now look, the obvious choice here, obviously would have been the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the Kansas City Chiefs, but to be fair, the Chiefs coming off of a loss, are going to be heavy favorites in that game. So I cannot justify putting it as Game Of The Week, even if it will be worth the watch.

Instead, I’m going to lean towards the game that will be the most interesting and the most competetive, and a Lamar Jackson-Josh Allen matchup, right now, in 2022, is absolutely the Game Of The Week on any week.

The last time these two teams would have played would have been in the 2021 playoffs, when the Bills thumped the Ravens in a 17-3 to book a trip to the AFC Championship game and Josh Allen threw for 206 yards in that game while completing 23/39 pass attempts. 

The Bills come in to this one off their first loss of the season, and I have to believe there will be that added bit of urgency to get back to winning ways but there is are some key concerns for them on both sides of the ball. 

Starting with the Bills secodnary on defense and the key injuries to both of their safeties, this issue bleeds onto the other side of the ball too, because the Bills run game has been less than stellar and while Devin Singletary was supposed to be their most dependable option from the backfield, but the 13 yards on 9 carries he had in week 3, is not going to get it done.

The Ravens, for thier part, have injuries on their defense too. Injuries to the secondary definitely came back to haunt them in week 2 against the Dophins and Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis will be eager to expolt that.

If the Ravens are looking for a template on how to beat this Bills team, they can look to the 2019 season regular season where they walked away with a 24-17 victory. They won time of possession in that one, but they had to grind hard for their rushing yards that day where they totalled just 118 yards as a team.

Fortunately for the Ravens, Lamar Jackson has just been sizzling since the start of this season. 3 touchdowns in both weeks 1 and 2, and then 4 touchdowns and 218 yards against the Patriots in a win last week.

So with both teams missing their secondaries, this game will be determined by who does a better job airing it out, and it could turn in to a high scoring game if the recent exploits of the two quarterbacks are anything to go by.

That said I will be rooting for the Ravens, but I gotta go with what I think is the likeliest outcome, and I’m gonna go with the Bills because they already win without a run game.

Here’s what the NFL playoff picture looks like going into Week 18

It feels so weird typing “Week 18,” but such is life. We are entering the final week on the NFL season, and the first Week 18 in the history of the regular season. There’s a lot to play for with the very small number of teams still trying to get into the postseason, which the rest are competing for seeding — or just waiting until 2022.

The big story this week is the Cincinnati Bengals, whose win over the Chiefs cemented Joe Burrow’s team as a real threat. So, what did it do to the playoff seeding? Let’s check it out.

AFC Playoff Picture

No. 1: Tennessee Titans (11-5)

Remaining opponents: Texans Projected finish: 12-5

This is a team benefitting from early wins and cruising to the playoffs, on the back of what they earned. I don’t have a ton of faith in them against the league’s elite, only because they don’t feel like a complete team without Derrick Henry. Still, home field advantage is a curious factor, and with the Texans to close things out, they should get another win.

No. 2: Kansas City Chiefs (11-5)

Remaining opponents: Steelers Projected finish: 12-5

It’s been a blast to see the Chiefs put this run together. Yes, they got stopped by the Bengals, but the Chiefs are still terrifying. If they can avoid some of their consistency issues they’ll be a very serious threat.

No. 3: Cincinnati Bengals (10-6)

Remaining opponents: Browns Projected finish: 11-6

I don’t know if any team in the NFL is a bigger offensive threat right now than the Bengals. Their passing attack is second-to-none in terms of weapons, and they’re playing really great football. It’s going to be fun to see if they can make a deep run, and I think there’s some potential here.

No. 4: Buffalo Bills (10-6)

Remaining opponents: Jets Projected finish: 11-6

The Bills are riding on top of the AFC East, and that should change. I think not having a first round bye will be a bit of a disappointment, especially for a team people expected could have home field advantage. This is still the Bills, and their defense is still amazing.

No. 5: New England Patriots (10-6)

Remaining opponents: Dolphins Projected finish: 11-6

The Patriots may have been edged out of the Top 4, but hanging 50 on the Jaguars shows this team is still hungry. Hype may have cooled off in the last couple of weeks, but this is a Bill Belichick team and they can make an impact.

No. 6: Indianapolis Colts (9-7)

Remaining opponents: Jaguars Projected finish: 10-7

It was an off week for Carson Wentz, but Jonathan Taylor is still the best running back in the NFL right now. This team SHOULD get in, unless they lose to the Jaguars and some weirdness happens.

No. 7: Los Angeles Chargers (9-7)

Remaining opponents: Raiders Projected finish: 9-7-1

This final projection is bizarre because I’m trying to will absurdity into existence. The Chargers have been struggling down the stretch, so it’s truly an “any given Sunday” situation on whether they can get in.

Who can make it in from the bubble?

As it stands there’s just one team left that can realistically get it, and that’s the Las Vegas Raiders (9-7). In order to get in they will need to either beat the Chargers, or tie with them in the event the Jaguars can beat the Colts.

The Steelers can technically make it in, but the math behind it gets wild. All the following need to happen in order for Pittsburgh to secure the No. 7 seed.

Win vs. Baltimore in Week 18

Colts lose to Jaguars in Week 18

Either Chargers or Raiders win, game cannot end in a tie.

That would get the Steelers in with a 9-7-1 record.

NFC Playoff Picture

No. 1: Green Bay Packers (13-3)

Remaining opponents: Browns, Lions Projected finish: 14-3

The Packers have been scary all season long, and nothing changes now. The playoffs go through Lambeau, good luck everyone.

No. 2: Los Angeles Rams (12-4)

Remaining opponents: 49ers Projected finish: 13-4

The Rams are elite, they’re going to compete, and it’s going to be fun to see if they can make it to the Super Bowl.

No. 3: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (12-4)

Remaining opponents: Panthers, Jets Projected finish: 13-4

Other than the Antonio Bown drama, everything else has gone perfectly for the Buccaneers recently.

No. 4: Dallas Cowboys (11-5)

Remaining opponents: Eagles Projected finish: 12-5

A lot of gloss has fallen off the Cowboys in recent weeks, and Week 18 certainly isn’t a gimme for Dallas with the Eagles rolling. This team will get into the playoffs, but I feel less certain about their postseason chances than before.

No. 5: Arizona Cardinals (11-5)

Remaining opponents: Seahawks Projected finish: 12-5

The win over the Cowboys is proof this team still has plenty of teeth and the ability to beat an elite team. They have a lot more to show in the playoffs, but the potential is there.

No. 6: San Francisco 49ers (9-7)

Remaining opponents: Rams Projected finish: 9-8

Beating the Texans was a gimme, and the final week is rough. They’re a bubble team for their inconsistency, and it’s going to be tight.

No. 7: Philadelphia Eagles (9-7)

Remaining opponents: Cowboys Projected finish: 9-8

The Eagles are a sneakily dangerous team finding their form, and they’re in the playoffs. They had a great season, now the next level of work begins.

Who can make it in from the bubble?

In the NFC there’s just one last team left with a chance to get in, the Saints, and there’s some simple math needed to get them in. If New Orleans beat Atlanta and the 49ers lose to the Rams, they’re in. That’s an extremely likely scenario at this point.

The best fits for 6 NFL free agents still on the market

There are different reasons high-profile free agents like Jadeveon Clowney, Cam Newton, and Everson Griffen remain available.

The 2020 NFL free agent frenzy is over. Over the course of two weeks, hundreds of veterans signed new contracts.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t any big signings still to come.

The free agents still on the open market include Pro Bowl pass rushers, multiple-time Super Bowl winners, and three former No. 1 overall picks. Teams that may have missed out on the first two waves of free agency can still find the missing piece in their playoff or Super Bowl runs even now that March is in the rear view.

Why have these players remained unsigned while franchises were busy committing more than a billion dollars in contracts this spring? Each of the top six remaining free agents has his own reason(s). Let’s take a look — and see where their perfect fit is in 2020.

1. Jadeveon Clowney, Edge

Top 100 rank: 5

Likely reason he’s still available: Compensation

Clowney wanted to be paid like an elite pass rusher when he’s merely a pretty good one. While he has an indelible impact in shrinking pockets, he’s never had double-digit sacks in a season. He’s only had two years, 2017 and 2018, when he finished in the NFL’s top 20 in quarterback hits. This, along with the injury history that marred his introduction to the league, has made teams reticent to hand him a $20 million+ annual salary that would compensate him like Khalil Mack, Aaron Donald, or DeForest Buckner.

Clowney’s true forte is in a less heralded but similarly important field. As Stephen White pointed out last fall, Clowney can absolutely destroy run-blocking tight ends and create chaos when tailbacks dare to bounce outside. That’s a valuable trait, but not one for which teams are willing to pay top dollar. He’s reportedly downgraded his asking price to $17 million annually, which should be more palatable for cash-strapped teams but still threatens to keep him in limbo a bit longer. Any return to Seattle was dampened by the Seahawks signing DE Benson Mayowa.

Best fit: Titans. Clowney was solid in Seattle’s 4-3 defense, but his biggest pass-rushing success came in his 3-4 days with the Texans. Tennessee runs a 3-4 and has a need at pass rusher. A return to the AFC South would make a whole bunch of offensive linemen unhappy.

2. Everson Griffen, Edge

Top 100 rank: 14

Likely reason he’s still available: Age (and Clowney’s status)

Griffen is a wrecking ball when it comes to crumpling pockets from the outside — a fact bolstered by his four Pro Bowl invitations in the past five seasons. Unfortunately, those were his sixth through 10th seasons in the NFL, leaving him on the wrong side of 30. While he was expected to return to Minnesota even after opting out of the final year of his contract, Griffen later announced a return wasn’t in the cards (possibly thanks to the Vikings’ overhanging salary cap crunch).

He’s still got plenty to offer a needy defense, as proven by his 2019 season (eight sacks, 24 QB hits). Unfortunately, the market for a 32-year-old defensive end has failed to heat up, even as similarly effective players like Robert Quinn and Dante Fowler Jr. signed expensive deals. At this point, Griffen will probably be the consolation prize for whichever rush-needy team fails to sign Clowney. That’s not a bad backup plan!

Best fit: Seahawks. Seattle — a team Griffen is reportedly interested in — gets a more productive pass rusher (for now) at a price they can more easily massage under the salary cap than Clowney.

3. Cam Newton, QB

Top 100 rank: 35

Likely reason he’s still available: Injury concerns

Newton reportedly has a clean bill of health after being released by Carolina this offseason. Unfortunately, he’s having trouble proving it; the travel restrictions attached to the coronavirus pandemic have made it effectively impossible for teams to conduct private workouts and have their doctors put the quarterback’s worked-over body through rigorous exams.

Last season, Newton played poorly in two games before a Lisfranc fracture ended his season. That overshadowed an above-average season in 2018 (14 games, a career-high 67.9 percent completion rate, and a 94.2 passer rating). Teams looking for a new starting quarterback, or a high-value backup who could press for starts, jumped on this year’s available passers while the Panthers hemmed and hawed about whether to keep, trade, or release Newton. Other teams in need of QB help may be content to wait for an inexpensive crop of passers in this year’s draft. That’s narrowed his list of suitors, and is another major reason Newton remains unsigned.

Best fit: Patriots. New England needs a quarterback. Even if Jarrett Stidham is the answer, he’ll likely need more seasoning before he can be thrust into a full-time role. Newton could be an effective bridge to the future — or, since he’ll only be 31 years old, a new era unto himself.

4. Logan Ryan, CB

Top 100 rank: 40

Likely reason he’s still available: An uneven market for good, not great, cornerbacks

Ryan was hyper-productive in 2019, which makes sense since opposing QBs targeted him 104 times. His four interceptions were the most he’d had in three seasons with the Titans. His 113 tackles and 4.5 sacks were both NFL highs among cornerbacks.

That versatility and the experience of six playoff appearances (and two Super Bowl wins) in seven years has yet to pay off in 2020. While he signed a three-year, $30 million deal with Tennessee early in 2017, interest in Ryan has been limited in an offseason where less accomplished veterans like Trae Waynes and Desmond Trufant were handed eight-figure salaries.

That’s surprising, but Ryan may have been unlucky in the midst of a wash of low-value defensive back signings. As ESPN’s Bill Barnwell pointed out, this has been a rough offseason for most cornerbacks outside the upper-most tier. While other options like Darqueze Dennard, Trumaine Johnson, and Aqib Talib remain unsigned, Ryan looks like the best defensive back on the market. The Titans have reportedly been in touch about bringing him back.

Best fit: Lions. Ryan fills a position of need now that Darius Slay has been traded to Philadelphia, AND he’s a former Patriot. It’s surprising Matt Patricia didn’t sign him on the first day of free agency.

5. Jameis Winston, QB

Top 100 rank: 52

Likely reason he’s still available: Because he’s Jameis Winston

Winston’s risk:reward ratio skews toward 2:1, but few quarterbacks have been as proficient in airing the ball out downfield and leading comebacks as the mercurial former Heisman winner. His 4.7 percent touchdown rate ranks 13th among active quarterbacks with at least 50 starts since he entered the league in 2015, ahead of passers like Carson Wentz and Jared Goff. His 11 game-winning drives are more than Ben Roethlisberger or Philip Rivers. Of course, that fire gets immediately extinguished by the 88 interceptions and 50 fumbles in his 72 games as a pro.

Factor in a tumultuous off-field history — one that led to a three-game suspension in 2018 — and the aforementioned influx of rookie quarterbacks, and you can see why Winston languished. Meanwhile, his 2015 draft mate, Marcus Mariota, signed a two-year, $17.6 million deal soon after the 2020 league year began.

Best fit: Jaguars. A boom-or-bust player who’s been mostly bust for a boom or bust franchise that’s been mostly bust. Jacksonville is set to tank its way through 2020, but adding Winston would give the team the veteran quarterback it currently lacks. It could also provide the Jags with an inside track toward finding a full-time starting quarterback should he finally (and, against most odds) fulfill his potential.

6. Jason Peters, OT

Top 100 rank: 59

Likely reason he’s still available: Age, injuries, and a loaded 2020 NFL Draft

There’s a market for 38-year-old tackles who can still play at a high level; Andrew Whitworth signed a three-year, $30 million deal to stay with the Rams early this offseason. Peters has been just as good at his peak, but recent returns haven’t been as encouraging. The massive blindside protector has been an average left tackle in recent years, recording a 2.6 percent blown block rate, per SIS.

That’s something a playoff team can work with, but teams are probably justified to be concerned about regression from a planet-sized blocker who has missed a dozen games the past three seasons. This year’s draft is stocked with big, athletic tackles who could be O-line cornerstones over the next decade. The lure of several years of potentially great blocking and development vs. one or two of so-so blocking and leadership is certainly cutting into Peters’ suitors.

Best fit: Eagles. Philadelphia can keep Peters in the offense he knows ... while either grooming 2019 first-round pick Andre Dillard to be his replacement or drafting a possible successor this April.

In order for Sam Darnold to have any chance against an elite-level pass rush and rebound after three consecutive bad performances, Beachum must step up at left tackle. Darnold has only been sacked 10 times in four games. That’s not terribly bad for a rookie quarterback. Given his ability to get rid of the ball in a timely manner, pass rushers are limited some.

That won’t be the case come Sunday against Denver. Miller has torn through opponents over the first quarter of the season, racking up four sacks and forcing two fumbles. Another strong performance here, and the Jets will be looking at a fourth consecutive loss.

Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions: Aaron Rodgers vs Lions pass defense

Both of these entities are coming off ho-hum Week 4 performances. For Rodgers, he really didn’t need to do much against a horrible Bills team. The quarterback completed an uncharacteristic 22-of-40 passes with one touchdown and one interception. Though, it was clear he was trying new things against a Bills team that scored exactly zero points in this one. Against better competition, Rodgers’ game should tighten up a bit.

The same can be said for a Lions pass defense that headed into Week 4 having yielded the fewest yards in the NFL. It was then surprisingly attacked by struggling Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in a 26-24 loss this past Sunday. Barring a strong performance from this unit, Matt Patricia and Co. will fall to 1-4 on the season. It needs to step up big time.

New York Giants at Carolina Panthers: Saquon Barkley vs Panthers run defense

The Giants’ offensive scheme continues to be a complete and utter mess. In last week’s 15-point loss to the Saints, Eli Manning dropped back to pass 46 times. Stud rookie running back Saquon Barkley ran the ball just 10 times. Remember, this was a close game at the half and Barkley had put up 100-plus total yards in each of his first three NFL outings. What’s the deal, Pat Shurmur?

Now heading into Carolina against a Panthers team that is yielding an average of 4.9 yards per rush this season, the Giants need to rely more on the ground game. It worked in the team’s only win of the season, back in Week 3 against the Texans. Why not go back to it? It’s an honest question.

Tennessee Titans at Buffalo Bills: Bills offensive line vs Titans pass rush

In last week’s shutout loss to Green Bay, rookie Josh Allen found himself sacked seven times. All said, he put up 87 net passing yards on 33 attempts. That’s next-level bad. That’s historically bad. He’s now on pace to be sacked the most times in NFL history. Some of this has to do with Allen holding on to the ball too long. That’s going to be a career-long problem until he rectifies his issues seeing the field and recognizing pressure. Unfortunately, a lack of a true offensive line has played a role.

On the other side, Tennessee’s pass rush came to play in a surprising win over the Eagles last week. Carson Wentz was sacked four times, including a huge strip sack from rookie Harold Landry in the fourth quarter. If he’s able to provide a punch with Derrick Morgan and Brian Orakpo, the Bills are going to have absolutely no chance here.

Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers: Antonio Brown vs Desmond Trufant 

After yet another lackluster performance (by his standards) in last week’s loss to Baltimore, Brown has to be growing frustrated. His on-field connection with Ben Roethlisberger has taken a major hit thus far this season, leading to speculation that Brown isn’t a happy camper. Heck, he’s been about as boisterous as any player this season. Now, through four games, Brown has caught 29-of-53 targets for well less than 300 yards.

On the other hand, Trufant is also struggling to an extent in Atlanta. Without his two starting safeties, the Pro Bowl corner was called for a late-game pass interference last week against Cincinnati. He was also burned multiple times on the outside. On a Falcons defense that’s yielding an average of 30.5 points this season, Trufant must step up. If not, Atlanta will fall to 1-4 on the season.

Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns: James Hurst vs Myles Garrett 

Joe Flacco has now been sacked a total of nine times through four games. Not great numbers. But given just how immobile he is, this is a clear indication that the Ravens’ pass protection has held up well. That came out in droves in what was a solid win against the division-rival Steelers last week.

Though, the team’s starting right tackle is going to have his hands full against an elite pass rusher in the form of Myles Garrett. Last year’s No. 1 overall pick has racked up 4.5 sacks and a whopping eight quarterback hits through four games. He’s a legit Defensive Player of the Year candidate. And if Garrett can get pressure on Flacco, it could help Cleveland rebound after a devastating Week 4 loss to the Raiders.

Miami Dolphins at Cincinnati Bengals: Andy Dalton vs Dolphins pass defense

Coming of an exhilarating performance in a 37-36 win over Atlanta last week, Dalton has his Bengals at 3-1 on the season. They’re averaging a whopping 31.5 points per game. For his part, the embattled quarterback has put up 11 touchdowns to go with north of 1,110 yards in four games. That puts him at a career-best pace. In fact, it’s not even that close.

Dalton faces a surprisingly difficult test this week against a Dolphins pass defense that still intercepted Tom Brady twice in a blowout loss last week. Through four weeks, Miami has yielded five touchdowns compared to nine interceptions. It’s this type of play-making ability that could give Adam Gase’s squad an opportunity to rebound from its first loss of the season.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs: Tyreek Hill vs Jalen Ramsey 

Kansas City’s brilliant comeback win against the Broncos at Mile High Monday night notwithstanding, Hill has been somewhat of a lost commodity over the past couple weeks. He caught nine passes for a total of 54 yards against the Broncos. Overall, Hill has 112 total yards over the past two games. Not bad. But not what we’ve become accustomed to.

With his Chiefs now undefeated and set to take on a fellow Super Bowl contender, Hill will need to step up. While Ramsey has not been the ball-hawking corner we’ve seen throughout his career, he’s still yielding a sub 60 passer rating when targeted. Meaning, he’s not being targeted. In a game between two of the best teams in the NFL, this matchup looms large.

Oakland Raiders at Los Angeles Chargers: Amari Cooper vs Casey Hayward

It was surprising to see the 49ers go after Hayward at somewhat of an effective clip last week. Backup quarterback C.J. Beathard hit backup receiver Kendrick Bourne for a touchdown against the all-world cover guy. It’s the first score Hayward has given up this season. And it seems to be an exception to the rule. With Derwin James doing his thing behind Hayward in Los Angeles’ secondary, we’re not expecting this to be a continual occurrence.

Speaking of themes, the Raiders sure Cooper’s performance from last week carries over. He caught eight passes for 128 yards and a score in Oakland’s first win of the season. That came after Cooper put up just two catches for 17 yards in a Week 3 loss to the Dolphins. All said, Cooper has two 100-yard games this season. In between that, he’s tallied a total of three catches for 26 yards. Some consistency, please.

Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles: Kirk Cousins vs Carson Wentz

It didn’t take these two former NFC East foes long to do battle. It also couldn’t come at a more pivotal point in the season for each team. Minnesota heads into Week 5 with one win on the season. It has not tasted victory since Week 1. Last week against the Rams, Cousins did everything possible to lead his team to a win. Unfortunately, the Vikings’ had no answer for Jared Goff and Co.

Now set to take on an Eagles team that’s 2-2 on the season, Minnesota is in desperation mode. This game comes after Wentz himself struggled with mistakes in a surprising road loss to an inferior Titans team last week. There’s a lot on the line for both quarterbacks and both teams.

Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks: Todd Gurley vs Seahawks run defense

If Seattle is to have any chance to knock off the undefeated Rams come Sunday, its run defense will have to ramp things up big time. This unit ranks in the bottom five of the NFL against the run and has yielded 4.6 yards per attempt. This has helped counteract what has been a great pass rush and a pass defense that’s surprised the masses.

Should Seattle struggle in this area in Week 5, Gurley will be ready to pounce. The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year has put up 532 total yards and a league-leading six touchdowns through four games. To put this into perspective, he’s on pace to best what we saw last season. If the Seahawks can’t stop Gurley, it really won’t matter what their defense does against Jared Goff.

Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers: Josh Rosen vs 49ers pass defense

Josh Rosen wasn’t terrible in his NFL starting debut last week. Despite falling to Seattle at home, he didn’t turn the ball over a single time. Arizona also put up 17 points. While that doesn’t seem great, it must be noted that this team tallied a combined 20 points in its first three games with Sam Bradford under center. For a Cardinals team that remains winless, these baby steps are important.

Rosen will now get his first road test of the season against a 49ers squad coming off a disheartening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last week. With Richard Sherman still sidelined, this offers Rosen an opportunity to improve off his debut. San Francisco has yielded a 102.4 passer rating through the first quarter of the season.

Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans: Tyron Smith vs J.J. Watt

After struggling through the first couple games of the season, Watt has come up big time in the past two outings. He recording three sacks and a forced fumble in Week 3’s loss to the Giants and followed that up with two more sacks and two forced fumbles in Houston’s first win of the season this past Sunday. It sure looks like the 29-year-old Watt is back to pre-injury form after missing all but eight games over the past two seasons.

Speaking of being back to form, Smith has started all four games this season. While pass protection in general has not been great in front of Dak Prescott, he’s held up along the left side of the line. If that continues Sunday night, the Cowboys should be able to expose Houston’s below-average pass defense and start a nice little winning streak.

Washington Redskins at New Orleans Saints: Adrian Peterson vs former team

AD might have only played four games for the Saints last season. But we’re darn sure he remembers how Sean Payton and Co. failed to use him prior to the future Hall of Famer being shipped off to the desert midseason. Now in D.C., Peterson has reverted back to old form. He’s averaging 4.2 yards per rush and is on pace to put up nearly 1,800 total yards to go with 16 touchdowns.

Despite some major struggles stopping the pass over the first quarter of the season, New Orleans’ run defense has been legit. It held Saquon Barkley to just 44 yards on 10 rushes last week and ranks No. 4 in the NFL against the run. In a game pitting two potential playoff teams against one another, this is a huge individual matchup.

FOURTH QUARTER

Saints 11th drive: Saints take a knee to FINALLY end this stupid game.

Eagles 11th drive: Eagles drive into the red zone. First time all day. Then Wentz is sacked. Then Tate is flagged for offensive pass interference. Eagles backed up to the Saints’ 28-yard line. Wentz throws another pick right to a Saints defender in the end zone. Miscommunication with Goedert?

Saints 10th drive: Teddy Bridgewater in at quarterback for the Saints now. Saints go three-and-out.

Eagles 10th drive: Wentz throws deep again and it’s underthrown again and it’s picked off again.

Saints 9th drive: Saints move into goal-to-go-territory. Jordan Hicks gets hurt, shocker. Saints decide to show the Eagles some mercy and kick a field goal. Saints lead, 48-7.

Eagles 9th drive: Wentz’s 4th-and-1 pass for Alshon Jeffery is broken up. Turnover on downs.

Eagles 8th drive: Eagles can’t do much and have to punt. Cameron Johnston with a tackle on Kamara. Highlight of the day?

Saints 7th drive: Saints move into the red zone and score another touchdown without much difficulty. Saints lead, 38-7.

Eagles 7th drive: Eagles have to burn a timeout due to only having 10 men on the field. They’ve really got their stuff together. Wentz’s 3rd-and-5 pass to Dallas Goedert is underthrown. The rookie still had a chance to catch it but couldn’t bring it in. Pederson goes for it on 4th-and-5. Wentz fails to handle the snap and then throws high for an incompletion. Turnover on downs.

Saints 6th drive: Tre Sullivan flagged for offside on the opening kickoff of the second half. He’s been a disaster on special teams this year. Saints move into Eagles territory with ease. Brees hit Thomas for a touchdown. Rasul Douglas toasted in coverage. Saints lead, 31-7.

SECOND QUARTER

Eagles 6th drive: Eagles start at their own 7-yard line thanks to a special teams penalty on Richard Rodgers. So glad the Eagles used one of their two IR return spots on him. Wentz is sacked on third down. Saints take their final timeout and the Eagles run the ball with Wendell Smallwood, who is tackled for a loss, to mercifully bring up the end of the first half.

Saints 5th drive: Jones not wearing his helmet now. Eagles down to Rasul Douglas, Chandon Sullivan, Cre’Von LeBlanc, and De’Vante Bausby at corner. Saints move into Eagles territory. Brees fits a ball to Tre’Quan Smith in tight coverage for a touchdown. Saints lead, 24-7.

Eagles 5th drive: Eagles pound the rock twice with Adams to pick up another first down. He then leaves the field to get his left foot wrapped. Wentz completes a pass to Clement to bring up a key 3rd-and-3 around midfield. Doug Pederson calls a timeout to dial up a play. The play results in Wentz getting sacked for a 9-yard loss. FIRST QUARTER

Saints 3rd drive: Alvin Kamara takes a carry for 16 yards. Easy. Now Sidney Jones is hurt after a Saints incompletion and Chandon Sullivan is in. This is fine. Nigel Bradham gets beat in coverage to allow a big completion over the middle.

GAME INFORMATION

Well, the Philadelphia Eagles will play a football game today.

We don’t know if they’ll make it competitive or interesting, but they will play. That much is guaranteed.

It’s obviously hard to feel great about the Eagles’ chances in this one. Philadelphia is coming off a highly disappointing loss to Dallas that dropped them to 4-5 on the season.

The New Orleans Saints, meanwhile, are 8-1 after absolutely demolishing a Bengals team that was 5-3 heading into last Sunday. The top scoring Saints are averaging 42 points in their last three game. Talk about a force to be reckoned with.

The Eagles have their work cut out for them as significant underdogs heading into this game. Maybe the Eagles can successfully channel that “us against the world” mentality that served them well on their way to their Super Bowl victory earlier this year. Or maybe the Eagles are really just due for an absolute butt-whipping.

FIRST QUARTER

Saints 3rd drive: Alvin Kamara takes a carry for 16 yards. Easy. Now Sidney Jones is hurt after a Saints incompletion and Chandon Sullivan is in. This is fine. Nigel Bradham gets beat in coverage to allow a big completion over the middle.

Eagles 3rd drive: Stefen Wisniewski in at center. Wentz is sacked on first down but the Saints are flagged for defensive holding. Wentz airs it deep for Nelson Agholor but it’s underthrown and easily picked off by Marshon Lattimore. This game is going great!

Saints 2nd drive: Michael Thomas works Sidney Jones in coverage to put the Saints at the Eagles’ 28-yard line. Rough start for Jones. Maddox gives up a conversion to bring up 1st-and-goal. Maddox then goes down holding knee after breaking up a play in the end zone. Terrible news for the Eagles, who are already thin in the secondary. Brees connects with Austin Carr for a touchdown. Saints lead, 10-0.

Eagles 2nd drive: Corey Clement takes the kickoff 45 yards to set up the Eagles with good field position. Nice of CC to finally make a play. Wentz’s first down pass is incomplete as he’s pressured. Then he keeps and runs to bring up 3rd-and-4. Wentz’s pass for Jordan Matthew is incomplete. Eli Apple had a fist full of JMatt’s jersey but no call. Another three-and-out. Also, Jason Kelce is hurt.

Saints 1st drive: Sidney Jones starting on the outside with Avonte Maddox in the nickel. Mark Ingram’s first carry goes for a 30-yard gain. Cool stuff, defense. Drew Brees throws short of the sticks on third down in Eagles territory. The Saints attempt a 38-yard field goal and Will Lutz makes it. Well, that could’ve been worse. Saints lead, 3-0.

Eagles 1st drive: Eagles start at their own 15-yard line due to a special teams penalty on Tre Sullivan. Josh Adams gets the first carry and is tackled for a loss. Carson Wentz targets Golden Tate on second down but the ball is tipped and incomplete. Adams gets 10 yards on a screen to bring up 4th-and-1. Punt. God forbid you trust Wentz there instead of an undrafted rookie running back. Or be aggressive there and try to get the first.

Coin toss: Saints win the toss, elect to defer. Eagles offense up first.

GAME INFORMATION

Well, the Philadelphia Eagles will play a football game today.

We don’t know if they’ll make it competitive or interesting, but they will play. That much is guaranteed.

It’s obviously hard to feel great about the Eagles’ chances in this one. Philadelphia is coming off a highly disappointing loss to Dallas that dropped them to 4-5 on the season.

The New Orleans Saints, meanwhile, are 8-1 after absolutely demolishing a Bengals team that was 5-3 heading into last Sunday. The top scoring Saints are averaging 42 points in their last three game. Talk about a force to be reckoned with.

The Eagles have their work cut out for them as significant underdogs heading into this game. Maybe the Eagles can successfully channel that “us against the world” mentality that served them well on their way to their Super Bowl victory earlier this year. Or maybe the Eagles are really just due for an absolute butt-whipping.
