« Lola Pater » : étude de genre algérien

Le cinéaste Nadir Moknèche désarçonne en confiant le rôle d’une femme transgenre à Fanny Ardant.

Depuis ses débuts, Nadir Moknèche met en scène des divas – l’Espagnole Carmen Maura dans Le Harem de Mme Osmane (2000), l’Algérienne Biyouna dans Viva Laldjérie (2004) et Délice Paloma (2007), et main­tenant Fanny Ardant, interprète du rôle-titre de Lola Pater.

Aujour­d’hui, comme dans son premier film, qui faisait de l’actrice de Pedro Almodovar la tenancière algérienne d’un hôtel abritant des femmes seules pendant la guerre civile qui touche son pays, Mok­nèche éloigne autant que possible son personnage de l’état civil de son actrice.

Question de nationalité, comme pour ses prédécesseures (Lola est née en Algérie), mais aussi, cette fois, de genre. Lola est une femme transgenre, que la mort de son ex-épouse oblige à affronter sa condition paternelle, lorsque Zino (Tewfik Jallab), le fils qu’elle a eu avec la défunte, vient frapper à sa porte.

Choix de l’interprète principale

Le procédé est riche de possibilités, autant que de risques : faire se heurter un jeune homme d’ascendance et de culture méditerranéennes à la question du changement de genre ou réfléchir à ce qui fait l’essence de la paternité. Des questions qui flottent dans l’air tout au long du film, à mesure que Zino, musicien qui vit en accordant des pianos, se rapproche de l’identité et de l’histoire cachée de son père. Mais elles ne s’incarnent jamais tout à fait. A cause d’un scénario qui emprunte les étapes les plus prévisibles de la lente et tardive réconciliation entre un parent et un enfant longtemps séparés. A cause peut-être aussi du choix de l’interprète principale.

La question de l’incarnation des transgenres à l’écran est récente. Lors de la diffusion de Trans­parent, la série de Jill Soloway, dont le rôle principal, celui d’un père de famille qui entame un ­processus de réassignation, est allé à l’acteur Jeffrey Tambor, des voix se sont élevées pour repro­cher aux auteurs de ne pas avoir choi­si des interprètes transgenres. Même si Jeffrey Tambor, qui n’est pas une star, habite avec persuasion le corps en voie de transformation de son personnage.

Pour Fanny Ardant, la question se pose autrement. Son visage, son corps sont intimement liés à une série de portraits de femmes. De la jeune passionnée de La Femme d’à côté à l’amante des Beaux Jours, nos souvenirs de cinéma lui ont construit une biographie imaginaire dans laquelle le passé masculin de Lola peine à trouver une place. Mais l’imagination (ou le manque de) est un trait individuel, et cette incapacité à croire à l’histoire de Lola n’affectera pas tous les spectateurs.
