Southern Safaris

I was chatting briefly with @erikadprice earlier today about my first job in Nashville, and they mentioned that it had to provide good story fodder. One instantly came to mind, and I told them I was just gonna post it on Tumblr. So here it is. This isn’t really much of a story in and of itself, just something that happened.

Back in 2007, I was a newly minted baby attorney working for a small firm in Nashville that practiced workers’ compensation defense. This meant that our clients were insurance companies and employers––primarily lumber mills and manufacturing plants. They were located all over the state, typically in rural areas and small towns that took hours to reach on two-lane state highways. And part of my job was to drive to the courthouses and Tennessee Department of Labor offices with jurisdiction over these backwoods workplaces, typically for settlement negotiations and court approval of same.

One of these locations was in Paris, Tennessee. Paris isn’t too far from Nashville as the crow flies, but because you have to take all these meandering back roads it’s a good three-hour drive. And I had to be there, on this particular occasion, at 8:30 a.m. This meant I had to get up at around 4:00 a.m. (after having finally managed to go to bed the night before at around 1:00 a.m.), throw myself into professional attire, and get on the road. Energy drinks were my friend.

I’m driving down this mostly deserted highway at like 6:30 or 7:00 a.m., running off of too much caffeine and like three hours of sleep, when out of the corner of my eye I see a giraffe. A fucking giraffe. I literally said out loud “Did I just see a giraffe?” And then I saw some zebras. Some fucking zebras. I wasn’t sure if I was hallucinating, or I’d passed through some portal to some alternate dimension. I was questioning literal reality. But at the same time, I was utterly enchanted. It was one of the most magical moments of my life.

As it turns out, on the way to Paris is this Safari Park. I didn’t know this at the time, having never been to Paris. Actually, the Safari Park is in Alamo, Tennessee (this portion of Tennessee apparently being an area where it is common to name small, rural towns after other places where people might actually want to go). The Safari Park is run by a family, and is on a farm. You just pay your admission or whatever and drive through this thing. The highway runs right by this farm, and this area’s pretty flat, so like, you can also see the safari animals from the road, sometimes. And that was what had happened to me. At the butt crack of dawn when I was stressed-out, over-caffeinated, and sleep-deprived.

I drove to Paris about a dozen times while I worked for that firm, but I never saw the animals from the highway again. I always looked.

A TRIP OF A LIFETIME Over the last three weeks I have been on a very special Custom Luxury Tour with a 79 year old lady from Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Read the report for this exceptional trip on my blog (https://sperka.info/2022/08/09/a-trip-of-a-lifetime-a-travel-story/). I took over 1,300 photos, but for this report I have selected one picture for each day in the bush! Irene, being an animal enthusiast working as a docent for the Nashville Zoo since 20 years, always wanted to experience African wildlife in its native environment. She called it ‘A Trip of a Lifetime’. It was planned for 2020, but after two years of COVID-delays her dream finally came true. I really enjoyed being her guide and photographer for her 21 days in South Africa. The journey started and ended in Johannesburg/Pretoria. It included visits to Rietvlei Nature Reserve, Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, Kruger National Park, Pakamisa Private Game Reserve, Ithala Game Reserve, iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Thanda Safari. As this was to be a road trip (with no flight delays, no crammed airplanes, no luggage restrictions and no endless waiting around) I had rented a very comfortable Toyota Fortuner SUV for the complete tour (about 2,200 miles / 3,500 kilometers). We recorded sightings of 32 mammal species and 76 bird species. July 16th

1955 - Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley made his first appearance on the national charts when 'Baby, Let's Play House' entered the Cash Box country charts at No.15. Written by Arthur Gunter and recorded by him in 1954, Presley's version differs greatly from the original: Elvis started the song with the chorus, where Gunter began with the first verse, and he replaced Gunter's line "You may get religion" with the words "You may have a Pink Cadillac", referring to his custom-painted 1955 Cadillac that had been serving as the band's transportation at the time.

1962 - The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys signed to Capitol Records in the US, their first hit was in September this year with 'Surfin' Safari.' Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, The Beach Boys first recorded the song at World Pacific Studios on February 8, 1962 in what was the band's second ever recording session.

1966 - Cream

Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton formed Cream. The three piece group only lasted two years, leaving behind some classic recordings including ‘Sunshine of Your Love,’ ‘Badge,’ ‘Strange Brew,’ and ‘White Room.’

1967 - Newport Folk Festival

Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, David Blue, Mike Settle, Tom Paxton and Eric Andersen all appeared at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island.

1969 - The Beatles

During recordings for their Abbey Road album, The Beatles worked on two new George Harrison songs, 'Here Comes The Sun' and 'Something.' Harrison was inspired to write 'Here Comes The Sun' when taking a day off from Apple business and spending the day walking around the garden at Eric Clapton's house.

1981 - Harry Chapin

US singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, who had success in the 70s with 'Taxi’, ‘W-O-L-D’ and a No. 1 ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’, was killed aged 38 suffering a cardiac arrest while driving on a New York expressway. His car was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer, causing the gas tank to explode.

2012 - Jon Lord

Jon Lord, the former keyboard player with Deep Purple, died aged 71. Lord was a co-founder of Deep Purple in 1968 and co-wrote many of the group's songs including Smoke On The Water. He also played with bands including Whitesnake. He had been receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer since last August.

2012 - Bob Babbitt

Hungarian-American bassist, Bob Babbitt died aged 74, from brain cancer. He is most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records' studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966 to 1972. Babbitt's most notable bass performances include 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours' by Stevie Wonder, 'War' by Edwin Starr, 'The Tears of a Clown' by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, 'Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)' and 'Inner City Blues' by Marvin Gaye, 'Band Of Gold' by Freda Payne, 'Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)', and 'Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)' by The Temptations.

2012 - Kitty Wells

American country music singer Kitty Wells died in Madison, Tennessee, from complications of a stroke. She was 92. Her 1952 hit 'It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels', made her the first female country singer to top the US country charts, and turned her into the first female country star. Her Top 10 hits continued until the mid-1960s, inspiring a long list of female country singers who came to prominence in the 1960s.

2012 - Queen

Queen's 1975 classic Bohemian Rhapsody was voted as the UK's "Favorite No. 1 Single," narrowly beating out Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' for the top spot. The poll conducted by the Official Charts Company had The Beatles ‘Hey Jude’ at No.5, with Adele's hit 'Someone Like You' at No.3.

2014 - Johnny Winter

Blues guitarist Johnny Winter died at the age of 70 in Zurich, just days after playing at the Lovely Days Festival in Austria. Winter, who was instantly recognisable by his long white hair, worked with some of the greatest bluesmen, producing several albums for his childhood hero Muddy Waters - with whom he won a number of Grammys.

2019 - Metallica

Metallica brought their WorldWired tour to Finland drawing almost one per cent of the country’s population in a record-breaking concert. The show at Kantola Event Park in the city of Hämeenlinna was attended by over 55,000 people. That’s about one per cent of Finland’s entire population of more than 5.5 million people.
