Poems I'll never send to her....
TAMED:
One day I found myself passing through a cute desert town,
I never would have known that you were around.
Moab is not where I expected to stay,
But I still got on tinder just to say hey.
You were my first match in that town,
Suddenly I found myself sticking around.
Surprised when I met you at wall street,
Long days of climbing, then cooling off at the creek.
It was weeks of being friends, and being a little shy,
Until you told me you were a little jealous of that guy.
Leaned up against your van at the gas station, my heart began to race,
I remember sitting ontop of that big rock, trying not to get to close to your face.
But my efforts from then seemed to get lost,
Some days you gave me sunshine, others just frost.
There was always such a strange push and pull,
I would tell you I liked you and then things would get dull.
We would laugh and we would kiss,
Many moments spent in eachothers bliss.
Then it seems like you would disappear for days,
Life had me down in what felt like a haze.
I made moves, it seems like I tried and i tried,
Hot springs and fall colors, up the Gandala in Telluride.
I gave up when I finally realized what was going on,
Someone else was already singing your song.
For months I decided to let it all go,
There were other lovers but nothing really seemed to flow.
Across the world I would see you living your life,
While I was trying not to end up becoming a wife.
You would like all my pictures, my posts, and say hi,
All the while I knew you were off with your guy.
In our own worlds it seems like all was well,
But from that far away it's quite hard to tell.
Then the new year came around,
Suddenly back in my life you were found.
Plans to go dance in guatamala arose,
But your passport was lost somewhere in all of your clothes.
To Austin, Texas you flew to hang out with me,
The luckiest girl in the world I could be.
A journey began to unfold before us,
Many things going wrong, but in the universe we trust.
There was covid and car problems but we made it through,
Just grateful to finally get quality time with you.
Then the world spun and everything went right,
Slowly we became super tight.
To thrift stores, the lake, sand dunes with fur coats, and caverns we go,
All the way up to play in the snow.
The trees grew much bigger, there were mushrooms everywhere,
Ocean side, and sunsets, and at cool rocks we would stare.
Traveling with you across all of these states,
Has once again opened up my hearts gates.
But suddenly my feelings and voice have grown quiet.
While my heart and mind tell me to riot.
I was so used to sharing my feelings with you,
But last time that left me feeling quite blue.
Conflicted I lay, in my own bed right now,
Knowing it will always work out, somehow.
Our frienship is beautiful, perfect, it's fine,
But really I do want to cross that line.
I'm not afraid of rejection if you don't feel the same,
But if I ruined our frienship I would only have myself to blame.
I am scared If I told you, your laugh would go away,
I would once again be left feeling so gray.
How do I tell you without making you leave,
That you make it easier for me to breathe....
That I would rather just stay your friend,
If telling you means that it would end.
These past weeks of exploring with you all around,
Have given me so much joy I have found.
Somone on the same level as me,
Traveling anywhere we want to be.
You are like clouds, sunsets, and pretty rocks,
You are like black nails, sweet apples, and tyedye socks.
Your smile and giggle bring joy to my heart,
I also feel inspired to make bootyfull art.
Getting high as a kite,
Giggling into the night.
We share so many thoughts and desires it seems,
Let's run away and live cottage core dreams.
A little cabin or bus and a thrift store to run,
Playing all day in the garden and the hot sun.
Green grass, wild flowers, and a beautiful horse,
Sipping hot tea and coffee on the front porch.
We could be Fried Green Tomatoes and Avatar,
Or just get lost cross country in your van or my car.
"I hate love, fuck off", you would probably say,
Maybe I'm crazy, because I still want to play.
I know you probably don't want to hang out with me and would rather be alone,
Or maybe I'm just not your person and this is something that you've always known.
But off in this world I find myself dreaming,
some days the feelings I have leave me screaming.
And sometimes I know, timing can be quite weird or completely wrong,
I want to share my feelings, but I wonder if you're still singing that other song.
I want to hug you and love you the way that you do for him,
But I know for now, I can only be a friend.
I know you are taking on a lot from other people, yourself, and the world,
Just know if you decide you're ready, I'll be your girl.
You only kiss me and tell me you love me when you are drunk,
Sometimes that has me down in a funk.
You say that you do not like to be touched, and pull away from my kiss,
So I watch from a far, hoping we will not be a miss.
And sometimes I think you would still run off with him if he was around,
I have to admit that it hurts, but I understand it that's your prefered sound.
Why couldn't you be honest and just tell me how you felt?
Because when I'm around you I can't help but melt.
I gave you many opportunities to come clean about how you feel,
And even when you tell me you like me I can't help feel it's not real.
And maybe I'm wrong, maybe you do just need time.
And I dream about what it would be like if we did cross that line.
And I know that we love very differently,
Maybe we will always just be another fish in eachother's sea.
And my heart hurts a little with each passing day,
So many things that I don't know how to say.
My words keep on slipping further away,
Back and forth between fear and vulnerability I sway.
I was never expecting to feel this way about anyone, wasn't expecting to feel this way for you,
And now that these feelings are here, I don't know what to do.
But to spend endless days with you under the sun,
I am just grateful to have you in my life and to have a little fun.
It doesn't matter if you would rather be my lover or just a friend,
I suppose I just need to know where I stand in the end.
I'm tired of going in circles in my head,
Just some clarity is what I need so this heaviness I can shed.
So wild, little lady with Strawberry blonde hair,
Your beauty makes it hard for me not to stare.
It makes me sad that you do not see yourself this way,
For you to see yourself through my eyes, I hope you do see some day.
I would take the light, love, and all of your darkness too,
Just to get to hang out with you.
She is wild, she is beautiful, she cannot be named,
I love her, I admit, the girl that does not want to be tamed.

15 Best Romantic Weekend Getaways For Couples In The USA
Nothing keeps the spark alive like a change of scenery, whether you’re a brand-new couple or celebrating a big anniversary. Since it’s not always easy finding the time to escape, we got things started by searching out America’s very best weekend getaways for couples—because if you’re hitting the road with your favorite person, why not go for the cream of the crop?
Romantic Weekend Getaways You’ll Love
We know that every couple is different, from preferred pet names to favorite shows to binge-watch, so when it comes to planning a romantic weekend getaway, your vacation ideas should be as unique as you are. There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all weekend getaway for couples, so we kept it colorful with adventure hotspots, remote islands, glamorous beach towns, and a few offbeat surprises. And maybe we’re biased—our mission is curating the ultimate vacation rental experience, after all—but we’re pretty sure a rental makes the perfect home base no matter where you go. Book a penthouse suite or cozy cottage and it’ll be the perfect starting point for a romantic weekend.
Kennebunkport, ME
Catch the sunrise over the ocean in upscale Kennebunkport, one of the best weekend getaways for couples on Maine’s gorgeous coast. A romantic weekend here is all about the water, whether you’re learning to steer a surfboard, cruising the coast in an old-fashioned schooner sailboat, or going offshore on a whale-watching trip. After a day of sun and salt, head to winding Ocean Avenue for a romantic sunset drive past some of Kennebunkport’s most exclusive inns and mansions.
Find a great place to stay in Kennebunkport!
Gatlinburg, TN
Tucked into the spectacular Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg is among the most fun weekend getaways for active couples. Hit the trail on a guided hike to find waterfalls and wildflowers, drive through the heart of Great Smoky Mountains National park, and check out the region’s gorgeous fall foliage. Not that it’s all back roads and rural scenery. If you’re looking for something a little more spirited, Gatlinburg’s got a booming craft distilling scene that’s ideal for an afternoon of tasting moonshine straight from old-school Mason jars.
Find a great place to stay in Gatlinburg!
Winter Park, FL
A romantic couples weekend in Winter Park gives you the best of both worlds, since you’re a quick drive from Orlando’s world-class theme parks, but can finish each day in a picture-perfect town that’s packed with romantic charm. Start your day with some culture by browsing the gorgeous art at Rollins College and Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, then head to Orlando to spend a day in one of Florida’s amazing theme parks: escape to Universal’s Islands of Adventures, or channel your favorite Disney romance at Magic Kingdom.
Find a great place to stay in Winter Park!
Paradise Valley, AZ
If your perfect romantic weekend getaway means a pre-booked tee time and a bit of pampering, Paradise Valley is a luxurious dream trip. Weekend getaways for couples could start with a treatment at one of the town’s top-shelf spas, followed by a trip to nearby Scottsdale for a foodie tour of the historic downtown. Not that everything in Paradise Valley is quite so placid; if your idea of a fun couples weekend is more high-adrenaline than haute cuisine, hit the desert for an off-road tour that explores the best of the Arizona backcountry.
Find a great place to stay in Paradise Valley!
Eureka Springs, AR
Fun weekend getaways for couples in Eureka Springs might be all about getting back to nature, but the town’s beautifully preserved Victorian downtown exudes old-fashioned charm. Animal lovers can spend the day with the big cats at the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, then head to Basin Springs Park for a romantic walk through rock formations and leafy forests. Don’t leave town without snapping an unforgettable couple selfie with the towering Christ of the Ozarks.
Find a great place to stay in Eureka Springs!
Hood River, OR
With a prime location on the beautiful Columbia River, Hood River is among the best weekend getaways for couples ready to explore the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. Join a bike tour that links up the region’s vineyards, then take a spin on the Columbia with a kayak, windsurf board, or stand-up paddleboard. For a romantic activity that’s more about scenery than sweat, hop the Mount Hood Railroad through Oregon’s gorgeous mountain terrain.
Find a great place to stay in Hood River!
Orcas Island, WA (San Juan Islands)
Seemingly pulled from a postcard, the scenic Orcas Island is just a ferry—and a world—away from Washington’s mainland. Couples weekend getaways on Orcas Island mean adapting to the leisurely pace of life in a mostly rural community: start with a whale-watching cruise out of Eastsound, taste oysters straight from the sea at the Buck Bay Shellfish Farm, and check out some of the studios of the island’s many artists.
Find a great place to stay in Orcas Island!
St. Simons, GA
Romantic weekend getaways to Saint Simons Island are perfect for long afternoons on the water. Soak up the salty air and coastal scenery with a fishing charter or kayak tour, or climb into the saddle for a laid-back horseback ride along the beach. After all that exploring, treat yourself to some of the region’s freshest seafood on a gourmet tour of downtown, where moss-draped oaks line the historic streets.
Find a great place to stay in St. Simons!
Telluride, CO
An outdoor hotspot surrounded by Rocky Mountain peaks, Telluride was made for couples who love the mountains. Rent a pair of skis or a snowboard to hit the slopes, or launch a Jeep expedition that follows rugged back roads. For a tiny town in the mountains, Telluride’s got a thriving foodie scene and breweries that are perfect for post-trail pints—you can even fuel up for all those adventures with a tasting tour of downtown.
Find a great place to stay in Telluride!
Malibu, CA
With legendary beaches and plenty of Golden State shine, it’s no surprise that Malibu’s one of the best weekend getaways for couples in California. Lounge on the idyllic sands of Zuma Beach, head to the skies and book your spot on a Malibu Canyon and Coast Air Tour, or up the closeness factor on a romantic Tandem Paragliding Experience where you’ll have unforgettable views of the area at its sparkling best.
Find a great place to stay in Malibu!
Monterey, CA
One of California’s top weekend getaways for couples that like wildlife more than nightlife, Monterey is all about coastal scenery. Commune with the kissing fish at the must-see Monterey Aquarium, take a romantic sunset sail, or book a full-day, private tour that explores Carmel and the winding 17-mile drive. Of course, Monterey’s the ultimate couples getaway for golf lovers, too, with easy access to the world class courses at legendary Pebble Beach.
Find a great place to stay in Monterey!
Charleston, SC
Old Southern charm meets vibrant culture in Charleston, one of the most romantic weekend getaways in the South. There are endless ways to experience Charleston’s coast and picture-perfect downtown: hop a private, horse-drawn carriage through the historic center, watch a sunset from the deck of your own personal catamaran, or brush up your fishing skills on a private fishing charter. If your idea of a romantic night is all about sharing spine-tingling ghost stories, head out after dark to hear about Charleston’s haunted graveyards and most famous ghouls.
Find a great place to stay in Charleston!
San Antonio, TX
Couples weekends in San Antonio go from America’s Wild West history to cutting-edge cuisine, and the colorful city overflows with Texas-sized romance. Get your bearings on a cruise down the San Antonio River, then take a deep dive into local lore at the San Antonio Missions, the Alamo, and the rolling landscape of Texas hill country. For a fun mission that’s great for serious bonding, challenge yourself to a couples’ scavenger hunt that winds through the heart of the San Antonio Riverwalk.
Find a great place to stay in San Antonio!
Kauai, HI
Pristine and spectacular, the island of Kauai is the ultimate in romantic getaways (it’s not called the “Garden Isle” for nothing). Okay, so it may require a long weekend to make it worthwhile, but if you live on the West Coast, Kauai is a worthy candidate and makes for a couples weekend you won’t forget. You can move to the rhythms of traditional Hawaiian culture at a Luau, cruise along the remote Na Pali Coast, or treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime sightseeing flight that gives you aerial views into Kauai’s rugged mountains. To experience Hawaii’s legendary waves, sign up for a private surf lesson that will get you paddling into your very first break.
Find a great place to stay in Kauai!
Logan, OH
A fun weekend for couples awaits in Logan, a scenic small-town escape where you can leave your stress at home. The forests that surround the old-fashioned community are filled with hidden rock formations, hiking trails, and caves that invite an afternoon of exploring. If you haven’t discovered Ohio’s local wineries, pause for a tasting at Hocking Hills Winery, and don’t even think about leaving town without a visit to Logan’s most delightfully offbeat attraction: the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum.

The 21 Best Events in Denver October 9 Through October 15
Take aim at hitting the annual Man of the Cliff festival in Avon.
There will be plenty of food for thought when LiveWell Colorado presents its inaugural Taste & Talk breakfast at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, at Stanley Marketplace, 2501 Dallas Street in Aurora. "There isn’t a person on this planet who isn’t impacted by the food we grow and distribute," says Gabriel Guillaume, president and CEO of LiveWell Colorado. "Food is life; food is health; and while we may all struggle to eat healthy, there are a lot of people here in Colorado who simply can’t access it, can’t afford it, can’t make it available to their own kids." So on the menu for Taste & Talk will be some of the state’s most knowledgeable experts on food justice; they’ll lead conversations throughout the course of the morning, which includes a Snooze-catered breakfast. To learn more and purchase tickets, $50 (proceeds go to organizations fighting for food justice), go to livewellcolorado.org/about/events/taste-talk-breakfast-fundraiser.
Wednesday, October 10
Get an inside look at the thriving studios of Denver artists Tiffany Matheson and JD Pruitt at an Open Studio Party and Art Night hosted on the city’s edge, at the Lumenati film and video production company, 3839 Jackson Street in the Clayton neighborhood. Matheson, a current resident at the Museum of Outdoor Arts, will show off her sculptural and multimedia works, while Pruitt, an illustrator, tattoo artist and writer, will introduce his Art Night concept, which invites other artists to gather in the space regularly to talk about, share and make art. The free party runs from 6 to 11 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10; bring yourself and, if you like, your art supplies. Learn more at the Tiffany Matheson Fine Art Facebook page.
Babette’s Feast will be served at the Flatirons Food Film Fest.
Thursday, October 11
Nothing draws folks together better than food. It’s a language that everyone understands, and it’s delicious, to boot. That helps explain the popularity of the Flatirons Food Film Festival, which moves into its sixth year with a strong schedule anchored by an October 13 tribute to Anthony Bourdain that begins with a street-food reception (Bourdain would approve) and ends with a screening of Babette’s Feast, one of his favorite food-themed films. But there’s much more to do and see, including the opening-night craft-beer extravaganza built around a screening of the documentary Brewmaster on Thursday, October 11. The four-day fest runs through Sunday, October 14, at the Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder, as well as satellite locations. Purchase a Festival Film Pass for $70 or find tickets to individual events at flatironsfoodfilmfest.org.
Artifacts of adolescence step out of your parents’ attic and onto the stage at Mortified Live!, an evening of storytelling that gently mocks youthful earnestness from the comfortably ironic perch of adulthood. The show’s premise is so simple and direct that it’s easy to see why Mortified has inspired a Netflix special and established regular outposts in over twenty cities: Who doesn’t have a record of their teenage musings that they’re unwilling to dispose of or let anyone see? During the show, which returns to the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, performers share such embarrassing relics of high school angst as diary entries, love letters, artwork and poetry — the poetry is especially brutal — while a throwback-specializing cover band provides a soundtrack to the shame. Find tickets, $16, and more details at theorientaltheater.com.
You’ll go out of your gourd at the Taps and Tails Bier Hall.
Autumn means different things to different people, but sometimes they converge — at the Denver Zoo’s Taps and Tails Bier Hall, for example, a 21-plus evening mashing up changing colors, harvest-season eats and Oktoberfest brews with spooky, Halloweenish touches. Visit the zoo, on the north side of City Park, to enjoy an all-Colorado pop-up bier hall with brewer meet-and-greets, live entertainment nightly hosted by comedian Janae Burris, food vendors and a chance to explore the spirits in an immersive Enchanted Hollows night walk. The fun runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, as well as the next two Thursdays; find information and tickets, $12 to $20, at denverzoo.org. But act fast: These evenings are sure to sell out.
This festival has the fright stuff.
Friday, October 12
Horror-film fans can enjoy a final fall adventure wrapped up in a scream fest at the Telluride Horror Show, which touts itself as Colorado’s first and longest-running event of its kind. Head for the hills and get a head start on Halloween from Friday, October 12, through Sunday, October 14, at three Telluride locations: the Nugget Theatre, the Palm Theatre and the historic Sheridan Opera House. Twenty feature films and fifty shorts will roll throughout the weekend; a highlight this year is the thirtieth-anniversary screening of the cult classic Killer Klowns From Outer Space, with director Stephen Chiodo on hand. Advance admission is $150 for a three-day pass or $75 for a six-pack; you can also take your chances and vie for $15 tickets for individual events, available at the door after pass-holders have been seated. Learn more at telluridehorrorshow.com.
Nearly a century after Germany and the Allied Powers signed the armistice that brought an end to what was then called the Great War, the Colorado Wind Ensemble joins forces with Voices West to present Songs of Democracy: A Commemoration of World War I. Howard Hanson’s rousing "Song of Democracy," which pairs Walt Whitman verses with a soaring neo-romantic score, forms the centerpiece of a concert program rounded out by Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E Flat, David Gillingham’s "Heroes Lost and Fallen" and Robert Spittal’s "Hymn for Peace." Let your spirits soar at a pair of remembrances: at 7: 30 p.m. Friday, October 12, at Denver’s Central Presbyterian Church, 1600 Sherman Street, and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 13, at Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 South Datura Street in Littleton. Get tickets, $15 to $18, at coloradowindensemble.org.
Saturday, October 13
As the 40 West Arts District continues to grow, the resident artists of the Glens, Lakewood’s oldest neighborhood — just a mile and a half west of 40 West along Colfax Avenue — invite you to meet them in their natural habitat during the fourth annual Glens Art Walk and Open Studios. Visit with 27 artists in ten home studios in the area from Kipling Street to Wadsworth Boulevard between Colfax and 20th avenues, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 13. Wares on view, which vary in style and medium, include Halloween folk art, hand-painted silk scarves, jewelry, collages, illustrations, locally sourced honey and even handmade violins. Admission is free; learn more at the Glens Art Walk Facebook page and email [email protected] for a printable map.
Pupusas originated in Salvadoran home kitchens, where the simple ingredients — pancake-like griddled corn-masa tortillas and a selection of stuffings ranging from melted cheese to beans or meat — are combined by hand, with a little love thrown in. Topped with a heaping pile of curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) and a thin, fiery salsa, pupusas are comfort food of the highest degree: Mom’s home cooking elevated to perfection. To celebrate this earthy national dish, the Salvadoran dance troupe Eco Folklorico Cuscatlan is hosting Pupusa Festival 2018, a cultural and gastronomic event for all ages, on Saturday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Aurora Cultural Art District headquarters, 1400 Dallas Street in Aurora. Admission is free, but every penny you spend on pupusas will benefit the troupe; find information on the Pupusa Festival 2018 Facebook event page.
Brunch simply wouldn’t be the same without the hangover-abating spiciness of the Bloody Mary, one of the few classic cocktails that thrives — and remains socially acceptable — in the daylight. Celebrate the endless recipe variations inspired by this timeless libation at the Bloody Mary Festival, where some of the city’s most innovative bartenders will vie for the People’s Choice award. Enjoy sample sips of all the contenders from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, at the Exdo Event Center, 1399 35th Street, when the tri-city tribute to breakfast booze (sister fests take place in Austin and San Francisco) alights upon Denver for a boozy battle royal. Gather your buddies and try all the Bloodys; tickets are $45 plus fees at thebloodymaryfest.com/denver-co-10-13-18.
Nottingham Park in Avon will be overflowing with mountain men during the tenth annual Man of the Cliff. “Nothing says fall like flannels, Carhartts and lumberjacks," notes Amanda Williams, co-organizer of the event. "Man of the Cliff is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the changing of the seasons in the mountains." And also do a little speed-chopping, ax-throwing or keg-tossing — or just sample some of the contents of that keg. Pay $85 in advance (or $100 at the gate) and join in all the competitions you want from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, and Sunday, October 14, or just watch for free. And everyone — flannel-clad or not — can enjoy a free concert starting at 5 p.m. Saturday with Drunken Hearts and the Rebirth Brass Band. All proceeds benefit First Descents; sign up and find more information at manofthecliff.com. And as the organizers urge, "Gentlemen, start your beards!"
Prepare to meet your Maker Faire.
The egalitarian DIY maker revolution is upon us, pushing hobbyists and professionals in all sorts of creative enterprises, from robot labs and basement inventors to artists and gearheads. Maker Faire Denver 2018 showcases all of the above, plus dozens of other maker niches in a grand display that shows off the pliability of the human mind with immersive experiences, ever-popular robot wars, drone races, hands-on activities, classic cars, electric cupcake rides, tinkering demonstrations, LEGO workshops and more, ad infinitum. Enter the family-friendly world of makers at the National Western Complex starting at 11 a.m. daily on Saturday, October 13, and Sunday, October 14. Ticket options range from free to $40 in advance at eventbrite.com through October 11, with slightly higher general admission tickets available at the door. Find more info and a complete rundown of attractions at denver.makerfaire.com.
Denver may not be as big of a melting pot as New York, but it’s still home to large communities of people hailing from all around the globe. Don’t believe us? One local nonprofit, Project Worthmore, has served refugees from more than twenty countries over the past nine years, and it will celebrate that diversity at 6 p.m. Saturday, October 13, at Our Neighbors, Ourselves at the Hangar at Stanley Marketplace, 2501 Dallas Street in Aurora. This year’s theme is "The World Within," and the evening will include art, music and theatrical performances that reflect the various cultures represented in Colorado. Tickets are $60, with all proceeds supporting Project Worthmore; learn more at projectworthmore.org.
Some of Denver’s top Latino chefs (many of whom started at the bottom) will be at RISE Westwood, 3738 Morrison Road, on Saturday, October 13, for the inaugural Buen Provecho, a farm-to-table-style dinner to benefit Re:Vision, a nonprofit that works with low-income communities to cultivate a healthy food system. The evening will include dishes from Dana Rodriguez (owner/chef of Work & Class and Super Mega Bien), Jose Avila (co-owner/chef of the three Machete restaurants), Adriana Rondón (El Camino de la Arepa), Edwin Sandoval (owner of XATRUCHO and resident chef at Invisible City), Keigh Crespo (owner of Dos Abuelas @ Finn’s Manor) and Matayas Urban (chef at Leña), among others. “By shining a spotlight on the stories of these successful chefs and immigrants, we are also bringing the focus back to our community in Westwood,” says Joseph Teipel, executive director at Re:Vision. We’ll drink to that — and we can, during the 6 p.m. cocktail reception that precedes the dinner. Tickets are $100, or $175 per couple, at buenprovecho.eventbrite.com.
A decade ago, a group of friends and local musicians in Denver decided to harness the power of music and the people who love it, taking that vision to stages, open-mic nights, coffee shops, street corners, peace marches, protests and, ultimately, classrooms and youth residential treatment centers. The vision of what started as Flobots.org and is now Youth on Record is stronger than ever today, and on Saturday, October 13, community members will celebrate the work of the past decade at 10 Years Strong: A Decade of Amplifying the Voices of Our Youth. Festivities include a gallery retrospective, a silent auction, food and drink and, of course, live performances, including from the Flobots. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for general admission (5 p.m. for VIP) at the McNichols Building in Civic Center Park; tickets start at $15 at youthonrecord.org.
Local authors are on a roll with small-press releases this fall, and Counterpath has gathered up four of them for a group book launch. Jason Arment, Steven Dunn, Julia Madsen and Nancy Stohlman are all part of Denver’s close-knit literary community, and each has something completely different to offer: Arment’s Musalaheen is an Iraq War memoir; Dunn follows up his acclaimed novel Potted Meat with water & power, a new work that takes on military culture; Madsen offers The Boneyard, The Birth Manual, A Burial: Investigations Into the Heartland, a volume of poetry; and flash-fiction maestra Stohlman introduces Madam Velvet’s Cabaret of Oddities, the written representation of a live performance. Hear them read from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, October 13, at Counterpath, 7935 East 14th Avenue; admission is free, and books will be available for purchase. Learn more at counterpathpress.org.
After a star-making turn as Aaron Burr in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. continues to gather accolades. In addition to landing prominent roles in the ensemble casts of Murder on the Orient Express and One Dollar, the multi-talented Odom recently penned the inspirational memoir Failing Up and recorded his debut solo album, Without You. Odom’s songs will sound even sweeter when the Grammy- and Tony Award-winning quadruple threat joins conductor Brett Mitchell and the Colorado Symphony for An Evening With Leslie Odom Jr. at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 13, at Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Learn more and get tickets, $29 to $99, at coloradosymphony.org.
Sunday, October 14
There’s more to art collecting than meets the eye, though it’s a habit that often gets started by pleasing your peepers. But once you find something you love, how do you continue capturing an artist’s creative effort through ownership? The hardest part is getting started, experts say, and that’s the reason for JuiceBox Gallery’s Practicing Collecting workshop, the first in a series of events aimed at demystifying the art-collecting ethos with practical, common-sense advice. Join JuiceBox artist/gallerist/entrepreneurs Lucía Rodríguez and Aaron Mulligan and collectors Krista Hanley and Stephanie Edwards for brunch and conversation at 10 a.m. Sunday, October 14, at JuiceBox, 3006A Larimer Street, for a $10 fee; find details at juiceboxdenver.com or @juiceboxdenver on Instagram or Twitter.
Gather with fellow green thumbs at FarmFest 2018, a fun (and furry) way to ring in the harvest season. Packed with such time-honored autumnal diversions as guided hayrides and a pumpkin market, FarmFest is an ideal introduction to the Urban Farm at Stapleton, 10200 Smith Road. Curious kids will enjoy the Denver Public Library-sponsored storybook farm, where farm animals join storytellers for pastoral children’s tales; the day also include a performance by country singer Jesse Cornett for their parents. Support the Urban Farm’s efforts to educate its community on the finer points of horticulture and animal husbandry while having a ball in the fall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 14. All proceeds from ticket sales benefit Urban Farm’s outreach programs, garden maintenance and livestock care; visit theurbanfarm.org or eventbrite.com to buy tickets, $8 to $40, and learn more.
To heck with corn mazes: Folks looking for a rustic family experience need drive no further than Broken Shovels Farm Sanctuary, a safehouse for abandoned and neglected animals at 8640 Dahlia Street in Commerce City. Enjoy some seasonal agritainment and support the sanctuary at the Open Sanctuary Snuggle Day and Projectile Pumpkin Party, an event that’s as much fun for the animals — who love to gobble up broken pumpkins — as it is for you. The fun runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 14; bring a ripe pumpkin and pay a $5 donation at the door for entry to the farm. Learn more at the Broken Shovels Facebook page.
Monday, October 15
Even the constantly expanding universe can hardly contain its love for Neil deGrasse Tyson, a Columbia-educated astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium who’s emerged as an unlikely yet ubiquitous pop-culture figure. Tyson, who humbly assumed the mantle of his late mentor, Carl Sagan, with Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (a companion piece to Sagan’s mind-blowing 1980 miniseries of the same name), is also a reliably quippy fixture of late-night talk shows and always willing to show up for an amusing cameo in such movies as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time. Cosmos may not return until 2019, but you don’t have to wait to see Tyson: At 7:30 p.m. Monday, October 15, he’ll be at the Bellco Theatre, in the Colorado Convention Center, to present An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies, a good-natured fact-check of cinema that doesn’t necessarily hold up to scientific scrutiny. Get ready to quibble, Star Wars nerds; get tickets, $59.50 to $95, and learn more at denverconvention.com/events.
In order to be considered for the 21 Best Events, we need information at least three weeks in advance. Send it to [email protected] or Westword, 969 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203.

Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum.

Thumbnails Special Edition: Cannes 2018
In addition to our full table of contents, we are highlighting some of our coverage from the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in this special edition of Thumbnails. Included below are daily dispatches by Barbara Scharres and Ben Kenigsberg as well as video dispatches by Chaz Ebert.
1.
vimeo
Cannes 2018 with Chaz Ebert, Segment 5 from The Mint on Vimeo.
"Capharnaüm, The First of Many and More": Chaz Ebert's fifth video dispatch from Cannes 2018 features interviews with filmmakers Pamela Guest and Pamela Green, producer Matthew Helderman, production coordinator and Ebert Fellow Sue-Ellen Chitunya and Gary Novak, Dean of DePaul University’s School of Cinematic Arts.
“While it’s wonderful to see a female director like Nadine Labaki succeed so admirably here in Cannes, the industry still has a long way to go towards equality as evidenced by the protests earlier in the festival calling for 50/50 by 2020: Equal representation of women by the year 2020. And the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements remain at the forefront of conversation here on the Croisette. One woman active in that movement is talented actress and casting director, Pamela Guest. She was raped in the 1970’s and only realized many years later that the rapist was Oscar winning composer and filmmaker Joseph Brooks who ironically composed the song ‘You Light Up My Life.’ Guest was brave enough to make a short film about her ordeal called ‘The First of Many.’ Her role is played, and co-directed, by her daughter Elizabeth. It’s a powerful statement that really felt like a punch to the gut when I watched it.Other women filmmakers are on display here in Cannes as well. A documentary about the mother of cinema called ‘Be Natural’ and directed by Pamela Green played in Cannes Classics. It tells the forgotten story of Alice Guy Blaché, a woman who directed over a thousand films in the early silent era, and even pioneered techniques like color tinting and synchronized sound, and working with an all black cast. Despite her vast contributions to the history of film, and even owning her own movie studio, she’s been largely left out of cinema history. This film aims to change that.”
2.
"Edward Lachman, an honoree at the festival, discusses the past and future of cinematography": In conversation with Ben Kenigsberg.
“Already a recent honoree of the American Society of Cinematographers and the Telluride Film Festival, the cinematographer Edward Lachman (‘Wonderstruck,’ ‘Carol’) received a tribute ceremony at Cannes on Friday. ‘I’m waiting for the afterlife achievement award,’ he joked when we met on Friday at a beachfront pavilion hours before the event. It may not have been his first tribute, but cinematographer, 72, clad in his trademark black hat, showed no signs of tiring when it came to sharing thoughts on his craft or his teachers, who go beyond the world of cinematography. He began with the photographer Robert Frank. He was ‘the first image maker that got me interested in images,’ Lachman said. ‘To look at 'The Americans,' I realized that here were documented images that he imbued with a certain subjectivity and poetics, in the language and also the visual metaphors and how he represented what he saw.’ His other formative influences included the writer Dwight Macdonald, with whom he took a course at Harvard, and Vittorio De Sica's movie ‘Umberto D.,’ which taught him how a film could be constructed primarily with images, not sound.”
3.
"'The House That Jack Built,' 'At War,' 'Asako I & II'": Barbara Scharres reviews three selections at Cannes including the latest from Lars von Trier.
“For three-quarters of the running time, ‘The House That Jack Built’ is a clunky rambling film with a homemade look. The whole point seems to be von Trier’s relish of the details of the grisly murders of women, an exercise in pure savagery, with Jack later storing up the corpses in a walk-in freezer and sometimes posing them for photos. Inserted into the narrative of the murderer’s adventures in gratuitous violence are ponderous asides in the form of art reproductions, animation, diagrams, and text, as if reflecting upon Jack’s malformed psyche within the greater scope of art, religion, and world history. There’s even a YouTube clip of pianist Glenn Gould playing Bach like a madman. Von Trier increasingly aims for the metaphysical, but at its center his film contains one small and sniveling statement, an ironic aggrieved cry that cuts through the bogus intellectualism of ‘The House That Jack Built’ to reveal the glaring foundation of this film. After verbally abusing a buxom blonde, he mutilates and kills her, whining to Verge, ‘Why is it always the man’s fault? Women are always victims … to be born male is to be born guilty.’ ‘Why are they [women] always so stupid?’ commiserates Verge.”
4.
"Hirokazu Kore-Eda wins Palme d'Or; Gilliam's Man Who Killed Don Quixote Film Closes the Fest": As reported by Ben Kenigsberg.
“Hirokazu Kore-eda won the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival for ‘Shoplifters,’ which observes the dynamics of a peculiar Japanese family, while Spike Lee won the second-place Grand Jury Prize for ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ the dramatized true story of an African-American police officer in Colorado Springs who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. Both awards were milestones, in their ways: This was Cannes regular Kore-eda's first Palme and Japan's first since ‘The Eel’ in 1997. Lee, returning to competition for the first time since ‘Jungle Fever’ in 1991, had been infamously passed over by the awards jury for ‘Do the Right Thing’ in 1989. Lee accepted the prize on ‘behalf of the people’s republic of Brooklyn, New York.’ But the moment of the evening was clearly Asia Argento's speech before the presentation of the Best Actress award. She acknowledged the Harvey Weinstein scandal that has hovered over the festival. ‘In 1997, I was raped by Harvey Weinstein here at Cannes,’ Argento said at the ceremony, reiterating what she had told The New Yorker in a report published last fall. ‘I was 21 years old. This festival was his hunting ground. I want to make a prediction: Harvey Weinstein will never be welcomed here ever again.’ She said that sitting among the audience members were others who had not been held accountable for their conduct against women.”
5.
"Palme des Whiskers": Barbara Scharres presents her amusing coverage of the best cat performances from Cannes 2018.
“The champion bull of ‘3 Faces’ has pledged to block the street with his considerable bulk if there are any threats. It’s a veritable Peaceable Kingdom of inter-species cooperation. My own Miss Kitty, Mistress of Ceremonies, takes the precaution of inspecting the lineup, especially relishing the sight of the honor guard of French Army cats with their titanium-tipped claws and jaunty berets. Before the official fun begins, some catfights are assured. Let’s sneak into the jury’s inner sanctum as quiet as mice, and find out what’s happening. Mimi, last year’s Palme des Whiskers winner, and the venerable feline French New Wave star of Agnes Varda’s ‘Faces Places,’ is ready to defend herself with a threatening paw, as pointy-faced Lola, screeches, ‘I’m here to support #MeToo, and you said it was going to be a majority-female jury, like that other one headed by Cat Blanchett.’ ‘That’s Cate, you birdbrain,’ smirks slinky Siamese Nico, ‘And I know on the best authority that it’s a pinky-skin human, not a cat, because my butler John Powers, who I let moonlight at Vogue, told me.’”

Chaz Ebert's third video dispatch from the 2018 Cannes Film Festival features exclusive footage of the women's protest, pictured above.
