Nine Essays About Characters That Matter
Fiction is, broadly speaking, a pretty fun time. You conjure up a world that doesn't exist full of people that aren't real, and with that world as their stage they have their exits and their entrances, and play their many parts.
And when it's over you put it down, and most times, for the most part, those fictional people stay in their books and games and movies. Oh, you'll remember bits here and there, and think fondly of re-experiencing them once in a while, but the world is full of stories and there's always something new on the horizon. Most of them don't stick around.
But then, sometimes, every so occasionally... some little blorbo or meowmeow, with their adorable face or blood-soaked madness sinks their awful little shark teeth into your brain and hang on there, tenacious and impossible to dislodge. Sometimes, whether we were looking for it and certainly whether we like it or not, characters matter.
And it's so individualized! Characters that slide like teflon off of you might hook themselves into me like burrs and barbed wire, while the precious perfect baby whomst I stan and protect registers to you as little more than an odious distraction.
I'm curious about those characters, what makes them matter and how they hook into us. So I asked around, and I got some fascinating answers.

A few weeks ago the ice maker began over-filling. Well, luckily this is a well understood part, found in, apparently, millions of refrigerators across several brands, it's easy to find the service manual, and in fact, the device was built to be easy to service. Removing and installing it is three hex head screws and one wire harness connector, and what's more it's got readily accessible test points and jumpers.
It's either the water valve (not part of the same unit) or something in the timing mechanism. The valve seems to turn on and off exactly as it should when I use the test activation points. And the ice maker is like 7 years old at this point, so we figure it must be that. Order a replacement, install. It makes smaller ice cubes which I think is actually great, a whole row fits sideways into my water bottles now.
But it's still overfilling. Apparently the common failure method for these valves is getting full of crud and being unable to clean them out. So another replacement part, another install.
It works! No more ice rink in the bottom of the ice bucket!
No, instead there's water underneath the fridge. I'm worried the inside connection on the valve is leaking whenever the ice maker goes, so we take it apart again. The space inside, under the valve, is not just dry but dusty. I guess it must've been the outside connection, just a slow steady trickle. We put teflon tape on the threads, just in case, install everything, and put it all back. No more leaks! Everything's dry!
Except the bottom of the ice bucket, because the ice maker is overfilling again.

I recently bought an Imomo doll Miko! If everything goes according to plan, I plan on making her into a mini Frieren! I think her serene or somber sculpt, with a rounder face, will lend well for Frieren. I really like the Volks Dollfie for Frieren, but I think a rounder face would have made her a little bit more on-model, annnnd... well, Miko was about $100 shipped, which is quite a bit cheaper than the Volks Frieren price tag, ahaha. :'D
I've read that vinyl Imomo doll bodies can be kind of floppy, so I am prepared to stabilize her with teflon tape, wire, and even hot glue if needed. If I like her well enough, I am planning on ordering an Apsu. More anime-elf doll talk below the cut, ahaha.
I think Apsu would lend well to be a mini Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon)'s Marcille!
I think if Volks was to do a Dungeon Meshi collab I probably wouldn't be able to resist getting an official Marcille doll, but at least they would be in different scales and probably have different hairstyles anyways!
Assuming I really like the Imomo dolls to justify getting a third 1/4 scale girl, I think I might get a Mie to shell Elf (or Sui) from Ojisan Isekai/Uncle from Another World.
I think Mie looks a lot like Miko - I think the biggest difference might be in her ears? - but I think Sui's design looks distinct enough from Frieren that it won't be a problem.
I love Uncle from Another World but I find it highly unlikely that there will be much in regards to new merch for the show (especially since season 1 has caught up to the manga already...) and getting a Sui dollfie would probably be highly unprobeable (lol), but I look forward to getting a little Sui. :)
Until I started thinking about which doll would suit which character, though, I hadn't noticed all three girls have green eyes. I think I've found reasonable eyes for all three on etsy already, so now I'm just on the hunt for a wig and stockings for Frieren. All of them will be getting removable elf ears but I am not sure if the 1/3 DD scale ears by GoldDin (recommended for their head size) would be too big for my tastes.
I think it looks really good on @catfishy2u's custom MDD Frieren, though! So I am probably over thinking it, ahaha, since I tend to veer towards smaller elf ears for my bjds... so I think that's messing with my perception a little bit. I did buy some elf ears secondhand for dollfie by B. A. F. Studio (unsure where they sell their products but I think they're Japanese) potentially for Marcille or a future dollfie.
I'll be testing the fit on Miko when both parts get here. Supposedly Miko will be here tomorrow, but I think Tuesday/Wednesday is more likely, but we will see! Although, seeing all three girls together, I think maybe the BAF ears would be better for Sui - Marcille's ears seem to be bigger like Frieren's in comparison. We shall see!

Learning to Smelt - 1
I've been wanting to talk about this for a while. Last year, I wanted to pick up smelting. It seemed fun, and felt right up my field in the realm of making things. I did all the research, got the equipment and earlier this year I finally managed to start! My goal is, once I'm comfortable enough to do it solo (since I had help from my insane uncle during my training adventure) to have it livestreamed and smelt things on request! Honestly at this point I reckon my skills have advanced to the point of almost competence (huzzah!) Nonetheless I want to post some stuff showing the process, just in case anyone's curious!
First off, I made an AGGREGIOUS error when it came to choosing the smelter brand. The one I bought didn't have a connector that worked with Australian Gas tanks, only US ones. I was very luck my uncle had a bunch of spare fittings/hoses lying around otherwise it would've been impossible to do anything from the start. Funnily enough too, despite it eventually getting to +1000 C temperatures, it didn't need that much fuel overall! Only had to slightly open the valves with one full rotation on the gas tank. I guess that's by design, since the whole idea is keep heat in (this just in, local hoplite PNGTuber discovers how heat works!) Also, fun fact! Don't buy a shitty $50 temperature gun that says it can get to 1000+ C and expect it to do so! So many infrared sensors are so pricey and there was no way in tartarus that I would use that kinda money on a glorified nerf gun but then it turns out the cheap one I got was incapable of reading anything beyond 400 C. Fortunately you can just eyeball it when it comes to smelting using this simple rule! If metal = solid: Wait If metal = liquid: Congratulations, you've done it!
Have to make sure it's done in a well-ventilated area too. Doubly so if you're melting brass since that garbage can burn and make zinc oxide which is NOT GOOD. First time I melted stuff was just done to make sure I knew what I was doing, not to cast anything. All I did was melt down brass and copper separately to make small ingots.
(btw if you ever plan to make casted finery, don't bother with a specific ingot mold, those things are pricey. Just get a cast iron muffin tray w/o the teflon on it or something similar. You can make a lot more that way and they're more likely to fit in the crucible if you want to re-melt). Also another piece of advice: DON'T OVERLOAD THE CRUCIBLE. My uncle wanted us to melt down all the copper we had (which was a lot, I had been going to town on the neighbourhoods wiring/plumbing in preparation for this) since "it was more energy efficient to smelt more instead of letting it cool down!" While technically true, a crucible full of copper is VERY HEAVY and picking that thing up with crucible tongs is gonna be a legendary struggle. We did end up spilling a bit, fortunately it didn't go anywhere. The vid attached to this post shows it: A crucible full of copper and regret for our lack of forethought. Following day I did try to cast one thing: My channel emblem as a medallion. I poured molten copper into an open sand mold and well, you be the judge:
Still, twas a good first go! Thanks to the ingot molder we used the cast metal in it's default form comes out in a style akin to that of a paperweight.
I'll be posting details on the second and third smelt soon, so stay tuned!
