Artemis didn’t know whether Emile was alive or dead.
She’d long ago turned off TEAMBIO, so that she didn’t have to watch the vitals of any more of her teammates flatline. Watching that happen with first Jorge’s vitals, and then Kat’s, had been bad enough. And she knew that Emile was badly injured; she’d seen what that Field Marshal had done, had been powerless to stop it. She’d hauled his battered, bleeding armoured form onto the blood tray of a Pelican, and taken off into the skies.
That had been three aching hours ago.
Now she sat off to one side, staring at his prone form, tears blurring her vision that she didn’t bother to blink away. She hoped that he wasn’t dead, just unconscious. She couldn’t handle it if he’d died, too. That would mean that all of her newly found family were gone. The mere thought of it was too much to bear. And they’d all had so much left to give.
Her chest ached, and she’d long ago all but ripped off her chestplate in the hopes of easing it. Deep down she knew the pain wasn’t physical, but emotional. Still, it had helped her feel.... more at ease, in a placebo kind of way. If she could save the life of at least one of her teammates.... Maybe she could feel like she’d done something. Anything, to stave off the guilt that she knew would inevitably consume her. Already she could hear the voices clamouring within her mind, waiting to smother her under their crushing weight.
“Stupid, stubborn bastard.” A shaky breath left her. “I sure as hell hope you’re not dead, because when it’s my turn to go, I’ll be haunting your sorry ass.”
Tumblr media
She choked out a noise that might have been a laugh. She was so damned tired; so close to collapse, so close to an emotional breakdown. But she had to keep it together, and just.... wait.

summary: He’d just lost Thom.
He wasn’t going to lose her, too.
Warning/s: character death mentioned. light-to-mild angst. swearing. Word count: 1,058 A/N: for the lovely @epsiloneridani07 <3
Searing, agonizing pain, followed by a blank, blissful numbness.
Primal fear, ice cold, clawing at her chest.
The daylight tilted and spun as Kat shifted her head, trying to see. Too many cracks in her visor. Her HUD was ruined; she did not know why she couldn’t feel her right arm, because her TEAMBIO readouts couldn’t be seen.
Despite being effectively blinded, she could still hear. That damned Banshee was circling overhead, engines whining, still on the hunt. Seemed like it wasn’t finished with her yet. It was like a vulture, ready to pick her off if she didn’t get up, and move. Ready to do more than just cause her injury, if she didn’t keep fighting. She was still its prey.
Crack. Crack. Crack. Crack. Whump.
Or, maybe not.
Jun. No denying the sound of an SRS99 being fired with perfect precision. But she didn’t know how close he was. Her motion tracker was not working. In fact, one of the only things still working on her HUD was the countdown for the...
The nuke.
Shit.
She was going to die, wasn’t she? Out here, in the middle of the battlefield, after making such a stupid mistake? Frustrated tears welled up in her eyes. She wanted to move, but her armour must have been locked down. Where were the others? If they were too far away, they would not have been able to reach her in time...
Kat blinked, and for a heartbeat, thought that she was hallucinating the grey-armoured figure of Thom standing above her, gold visor staring down at the nuke beside her. But she blinked again, and he was still there, and she knew that he was real, that he was right there, as he reached down for the MFDD that lay beside her and turned away.
She wanted to scream as she watched the jetpack strapped to his armour ignite, as the Spartan took off towards the Battlecruiser that hung in orbit above them, that was the source of all their misery. But no sound came out. She wanted to tell him what the hell are you doing, you can’t go up there alone, there’s not enough time left, you’ll never make it out of there, but it was as though there was a hand clamped over her mouth; she knew that she was opening and shutting it, but no noise escaped her; the words never formed, and instead died in her throat.
She blinked again and there was Carter above her, shaking her, and his visor was depolarized so she could see his face, see that he was shouting something at her, but she couldn’t hear him, and her vision was growing dark at the edges, and he was looking more panicked than she’d ever seen him, and—
I’m sorry, Commander.
The next time Kat opened her eyes, she was in a medbay, her right arm was gone and replaced with a prosthetic, and Carter was sitting nearby, looking like he’d been awake half the night watching over her. His eyes were half-closed, and whether he was asleep or awake now, she could not tell. His eyebrows were furrowed, and his expression was caught somewhere between a frown and a grimace.
What had happened? She could scarce remember much after falling, that Banshee screaming overhead, and the searing pain in her right arm before absolute numbness in the limb. Everything that followed was a blur. Or was it a dream? It would come back to her in time, of that she had no doubt.
“Carter?” Her voice was rasping, and low, but she knew that he would hear her regardless. Maybe she had managed to scream, at some point. It would explain why her throat felt scratchy.
She watched as he looked towards her, expression flipping from guilt, to grief, to anguish and perhaps torment. What had happened? Why did the tears blur his eyes, and fall down his unshaven cheeks? Why did he look like he did not know whether to hug her, or to apologize to her profusely? Had they lost one of their team? She’d seen him low, but she’d not seen raw fear in his eyes such as this.
“Don’t leave me.” He sounded broken, so broken, and shockingly young.
The sound shot pain straight through her chest, followed by a fierce rush of love for this man, her teammate, her Commander and friend. Whatever had happened, she would be there for him, as she had been every time he needed someone to lean on, through all the years they’d known one another.
He is my brother, and I will not stand idly by while he is dealing with sorrow. I will not let him deal with this on his own; he needs me.
“Carter, what happened?”
The look he gave her told her all that she needed to know. “Thom didn’t.... he didn’t make it out alive. He was still up there when the nuke went off. He was my brother, and now he’s.... I almost lost you, too.” A ragged sob escaped him, and the older Spartan lowered his head. He was bowed and broken by his grief.
Kat sucked in a breath, releasing it slowly to steady herself. “Don’t you think that he, as your brother-in-arms, loved you so much and knew how you would not be able to live without me, that he sacrificed himself to make sure that I wouldn’t die? That it was his choice to take the nuke up to the cruiser, to continue the mission and make sure that we won, no matter if it cost him his life?”
The Commander looked downright miserable at those words, and yet, she could see the acceptance in his eyes. She knew that he knew she was right, but that it still hurt him all the same. He shifted himself closer and buried his face into her shoulder, and not even a minute later, she felt his tears soaking through the material of her fatigues.
“I promise I won’t leave you, Carter,” she told him quietly smoothing her hand up and down his back, feeling the tension leave his muscles. “I’m your sister, and there’s no way in hell I’d go anywhere without you. Ever.”
“Okay,” he said quietly, “Okay.”
And Kat did not let go of him for a very long time.

“BEHIND YOU!”
Heart pounding in her throat, Artemis watched in horror and disbelief as a second hinge-head descended from the Phantom upon the control pod of the Onager. She could only hope that her message had not come too late. Everything felt like it was moving too fast, yet in slow motion at the same moment. Spartan Time, and this time, she felt like it was more of a burden than a blessing - because this time, she was watching one of her teammates get attacked.
And this time, she was once again fearing if she could save them.
She stared at the dropship, ducking as it swung around and fired its chin-mounted plasma turret at her, and her eyes tracked Emile as he swung, slowly, slowly, too slow, you should have moved faster, why weren’t you checking your motion tracker—
And he was shouting, shouting, a war cry; a challenge. His shotgun pumping, as he leaped towards the purple-armoured Elite. Both of them tumbled off the top of the Onager, and disappeared from view.
Damn it.
Ignoring the plasma that pelted at her shields, doing hardly any damage to them from so far away, and due to how quickly she moved, the Lieutenant ran towards where the mass driver was mounted. She fought her way through hordes of Covies, including a couple more of the purple-armoured bastards, until she had stepped outside. In one glance, she saw her comrade, saw the slain enemy, and the Battlecruiser moving in overhead.
There was no time to check what had happened to Emile. To see if he were alive or not. She had to stop that Covenant ship, before it took out the Pillar of Autumn. That old vessel would get away safely, so help her, or she would help it bring down the sleek purple warship.
She darted up the steps and slipped into the control pod, firing, firing, firing. Phantom after Phantom was flown her way, and dropship after dropship she shot down. Banshee fighters dogged her and harassed her from close by; those were made short work of. And finally, finally, that Battlecruiser was limping, listing towards the planet, burning, burning, burning, and the Pillar had slipped into the atmosphere and was away.
Without a second thought, Artemis clambered down from the Onager, and crouched beside her teammate. She did not use TEAMBIO to check on him - she did not want to see the flat vitals of the other members of NOBLE. Instead, she called him, begging him to be alive, begging him to have survived, begging him to not make her the last one left.
“Emile.... please....”

Frost & Trust I
Tumblr media
He could not see half a meter in front of him. In fact, he could scarcely see his own hand, even if he raised it in front of his visor. Were it not for the fact that the gauntlets were black and midnight blue, he would have thought that he did not have hands at all.
There was so much snow.
It must have been a snow storm — but how could he have missed the signs? And his motion tracker was so still. How could he have lost his teammate?
He wasn’t thinking straight.
He had been so busy trying not to get lost — so busy paying attention to his surroundings, and nothing else — that he did not heed anything else. He’d told the Lieutenant that he would look after her, when she agreed to come with him out here. And he hadn’t kept an eye on her. How could she trust him after this? Her bond with the team was tentative at best — he’d seen her snap at Kat, and he knew they’d once been best friends, as cadets. The Lieutenant’s past was an ugly stain on her life, and she was still healing from that wound.
Lack of trust had been a major part in that, and Carter had gone and screwed it up, big time.
Foolish. Idiot. Not thinking straight. You should’ve kept an eye on her.
Maybe the motion tracker isn’t working because the quantum mirror is frozen over. It’s so damn cold out here; temperature is way below zero.
Or maybe something’s blocking the signal. That seems more likely.
Too many maybes and not enough facts.
A quiet growl of frustration escaped him, and he continued to plough on through shin-deep snow. Even for a Spartan, it was slow going, and it was made all the more difficult by the fact that he could not see. He knew he could not change directions, however. If he did, he would have wound up—
Something had changed.
He paused, one foot raised and ready to take another step, and noticed that the ground in front of him was flattened. Eyebrows furrowed, he studied the landscape carefully, noticing the indents in the snow. Footprints, of some large animal, drag marks, bootprints made only by MJOLNIR, spots of blood. All signs of a scuffle having taken place.
That’s... not good.
Carter dropped into a crouch, and saw that whatever creature had been there had bounded away, and it was bleeding. However, the blood that followed those footprints was not red, but a sort of blue-purple; the red blood was spattered on some rocks and on the ground, but was not leading away anywhere. There was also signs of a body having impacted the rocks, and when he followed the impact site carefully, he could see that there was the lip of a cliff nearby.
Swallowing down his fear, the Spartan leapt down the edge, landing on an outcrop of rocks with a clunk. Here, too, something had hit — the snow was stirred up, and there was more blood. He walked to the edge of the rockpile, and further down below, there was definitely something down there that was not rocks, and was getting covered rapidly by the ever-falling snow. The shape was vaguely that of a crumpled human, and there was no mistaking the black MJOLNIR with aqua accents.
What the hell happened?
He switched to TEAMBIO for a moment, and a cold chill ran down his spine, when he realized that her signs didn’t show up at all. They weren’t flat — they just showed that she was missing altogether. That was not a good sign.
With great care, the Spartan picked his way down the mountainside, and approached his fallen teammate warily. Her armour had taken a beating, and there was blood beneath her prone form. He knelt beside her, rolling her over, assessing how badly she was hurt. Considering that whatever had attacked her had caused her to take a tumble off a cliff, and hit rocks on the way down, he estimated that the outcome was not good. At least her armour was functioning, because it had locked up on impact. But he did not know if it had activated in time to save her from injury or not. He did not even know if she was conscious.
“Artemis, what the hell happened to you?” he whispered.
Only the howling wind answered him.

The Thrilling Three
Tumblr media
Members:
Gazerbeam [Leader]: Covers teammates using laser powers

Apogee [Tactical]: Levitates objects to create airstrikes
The Phylange: Voice powers subdue enemies

Team Headquarters: Thrilling Three Towers in Washington, D.C. (Gazerbeam currently leasing pending regroup)

Codename: Don’t Tread on Me

Focus: National Threats
About The Beta Force: Gazerbeam founded the Thrilling Three in 1943 in response to a call for the reduction of crime at home while the United States was in its second year of fighting alongside the Allies in WWII. The group brought down a secret organization of fascists planning to bomb the nation’s capital in May of that year, marking their first big takedown. The three’s egos clashed often, particularly Gazerbeam’s and The Phylange’s. Because of this, Apogee often had to speak for them at press events and assume the position of their public relations representative along with her job as tactical strategist. After their disbandment, the National Supers Agency resolved to omit numbers from team names, as it brought attention to the fluctuation of membership.

About The Beta Force: The National Supers Agency put Blazestone and Universal Man together for this duo in 1949 as part of Blazestone’s rehabilitation following multiple counts of arson. They fought side-by-side with much tension in their partnership until the Superhero Relocation Act in 1951. Beta force brought down the Marmeládov crime family in June of 1950 along with several affiliates, tracing their support to the Orwell Waste Management Company and causing New York City to create its own division of waste management as a result. Their smaller acts of justice, such as those against the Jukebox Jammer, Adrian Ranft, and the Rogue Courier brought New York City to a time of peace until the Superhero Relocation Act’s passage the following year.
