(volume 2, page 41)
Botan having a canonically unknown age and birthday has much potential for plot ideas and headcanons.... I know most people read her as being middle-school-aged, but honestly I read her as being a grown (superantural) woman playing pretend at being a kid bc it's fun and people pay less attention to a kid than to an adult. (Coming to mind, Atsuko wearing Keiko's uniform which was sold to her by Yusuke in the epilogue chapters.) Also makes for funny hijinks for if someone figures out her deal!
Personally I think she's at her funniest if thought of as being in her actual thirties and in denial abt it. Like she died and became a ferrygirl instead of doing the normal thing and reincarnating (or.........? [1]). Either way, by the time we meet her in the canon narrative start, she's in her 30s. She's older than Atsuko and once made aware of it she Hates It! [2]
Okay but canon evidence for Botan being at least 20 years old:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shizuru: the one who came up with the idea for the drinking in the first place. Immediately red-faced. Immediately seems a little bit drunk.
Botan: is chugging. And for several seconds more than Shizuru is, halts to admire it (like she's pleasantly surprised about the taste), and gets right back to it.
In the Dark Tournament, there's the evening after the fight with team Rokuyukai [ep 33: "A Day in Waiting"]: Botan and Shizuru drink alcohol while Keiko drinks juice. Shizuru is 17-18 during the course of the series, having turned 18 by the time of the Dark Tournament in the manga [volume 12, chapter 108, page 143] and is in her early twenties in the anime (likely aged up bc of the legal drinking age being 20, and because someone wanted to extend the scene a little and have it end on a funny note) [episode 63, 13 minutes in]. She mentions as much in the Toguro-Yusuke fight, in the latter half and a little before Toguro gets inspiration on how to make Yusuke fight him better.
Tumblr media
There is the possibility that she's a minor and pretending not to be, but 1) I don't think Shizuru's intuition would fail her like that, and 2) I don't believe either of them would encourage underage drinking, least of all in front of Keiko.
Follow-up Questions!
[1] .... did she accumulate some sins somehow...? What kind has she committed, was Botan like a serial offender?? ...or.. is it a similar deal to Yusuke's, "we saved you somehow, you owe us your labour"...? or... did she go to ferrygirl university and spend 10 years to her studies [1-b]
[1-b] What is the real-world equivalent to a ferry-girl education and job? An end-of-life nurse? A loan shark? An accountant office worker? (later) A COMPETITVE ROWER (the oar)????
[2] I think it's funny if she hates it, and it adds a sense of baggage Yusuke has towards adults and authority figures if she is one (he just can't escape it!!) and I especially think it's funny if she's figuratively losing hair from the stress of helping Yusuke out wo telling him everything (the spirit beast egg eating him if he's "being bad"). Her being in her 30s and in denial abt it just feels like a natural part of that progresion. But I could see her embrace her age too? "Glomping you :3" is very Botan, I just personally like to put her through the comical wringers.

Team Rokuyukai vs. Team Uraotogi
Previously: Masho vs. Uraotogi
Tumblr media
Rinku. fucking. survived. In another turn of events, Roto's brother, Younger Roto, has joined the team. I used a dice app to draw the matchups, with all free spaces going to Zeru and Shishi
Round 1: Rinku vs. Makintaro. Rinku's yo-yos are probably as effective, if not more, than Makintaro's axes, albeit with way more range and maneuverability. He's probably faster, too, and I doubt Makintaro can close the distance.
1-0 Team Rokuyukai
Round 2: Younger Roto vs. Shishiwakamaru. Rotobro bluffs with his button, but Shishi only cares about fame, so he's threatening whoever stretched Shishi's bussy last and it's just not working. His only hope for survival is being caught in the Cape of No Return
1-1 Team Uraotogi
Round 3: Chu vs. Kuro Momotaro, whose spheres are way too OP. He's pretty much unbeatable if you can't one shot him or separate him from his spheres. Unless Chu is taking this seriously, he runs the risk of Kuro becoming immune to everything he can give. At the same time, taking it is all Kuro is good at, so Chu might be able to OHKO him. I can also see Chu stealing and using one of the spheres on himself, so that's what happens.
Round 4: Zeru vs. Shishiwakamaru. Zeru's filler ass appearance belies just how much of a contender he really is. Shishi's ghosts are his only ranged attack, but they're fodder for anyone really. If Zeru can keep his distance, it's him EZ. If he can't, his melee is probably weaker than Shishi's, whose sword negates Zeru's defense. It's a toss up but I'd give it to Zeru after a hard fought bout
Round 5: Zeru vs. BEAUTIFUL Suzuka. He has 999 abilities ig, but he's still weaker than Shishi ig. Zeru is tired and the outcome might be different if Suzuka wasn't such a showboat and overall ass. Ura has enough self preservation to forfeit afterwards
4-1 Team Rokuyukai
Next: Rokuyukai team vs. Saint Beast team.

Analysis of the match-ups of the Dark Tournament:
There were 23 match-ups that Team Urameshi participated in. Teams were supposed to be comprised of 5 fighters with 1 alternate, but Team Toguro entered with only 4 to begin with and Team Urameshi started with 5 but lost Genkai and had no back-up, leading to Koenma and Sakyo offering themselves up as their team’s fifth member for the final match-up, to be decided automatically by whether Yusuke or Toguro won the preceding match.
In the first round against Team Rokuyukai, Genkai did not fight because Chu, the team’s alternate, killed two of his teammates in order to take their place, causing the round to end after his loss to Yusuke. In that round, Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama, and Kuwabara each fought once, but only Kuwabara lost his match. Even if Chu hadn’t killed two of his teammates the best Team Rokuyukai could’ve hoped for was a draw after suffering three losses to Team Urameshi, but it’s unlikely Genkai would’ve lost if she had fought, so a sixth match, let alone a tiebreaker round would’ve been unnecessary.
So for round 1, Kurama, Hiei, and Yusuke each contributed a win to the team while Kuwabara contributed negatively and Genkai had a neutral contribution.
In the second round, Hiei and Kurama were prevented from fighting in the tournament and the match-up was a battle royale against Team Ichigaki, which Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Genkai won together.
So this round ends with Yusuke having contributed 2 wins, Genkai contributing 1 win, and Kuwabara having lost once and won once, making his overall contribution neutral while Hiei and Kurama both remain at 1 win.
In the third round Hiei and Genkai were trapped behind a barrier and prevented from fighting the entire time. Kurama won twice, then lost to Bakken. Yusuke avenged him in the next round, then defeated Jin, but the match was called a draw by the tournament committee. Kuwabara won the last match-up against Risho.
As of this round Kurama now has 3 wins and a loss, making his net positive contribution 2. Yusuke has 3 wins and a neutral contribution and Kuwabara now has a loss and 2 wins, making his overall contribution 1 net positive. Hiei and Genkai have now both sat out two rounds and contributed only 1 win.
In the fourth round Hiei wins twice, Kurama wins once, (although it was actually Shishiwakamaru who killed Kurama’s opponent, not that Youko wasn’t capable of doing it himself anyway). Kuwabara loses twice in a row and Genkai wins twice in a row (against the same two opponents who defeated Kuwabara using the same trick). And this is after having given up her spirit orb to Yusuke, who sits this round out.
As of this round, Yusuke still has 3 wins and a draw under his belt and only sat out once. Hiei and Genkai have both contributed 3 wins despite sitting out twice. Kurama now has sat out once and contributed 4 wins and 1 loss, giving him a net positive total of 3. Poor Kuwabara at this point has lost 3 times and only won twice, making his overall contribution negative 1, despite being the only member of the team to fight in every round thus far.
In the final round, Genkai obviously didn’t fight. Kurama kills Karasu, but loses anyway. Hiei defeats Bui, Kuwabara defeats Elder Toguro, Yusuke defeats Younger Toguro, and Koenma automatically gets the win against Sakyo. With Hiei, Kuwabara and Yusuke having all won their matchups, they didn’t actually need Koenma’s automatic win to contribute to their victory, as Koenma getting his ass kicked by Sakyo still would’ve ultimately resulted in the round being 3 wins for Team Urameshi and only 2 for Toguro. If Kurama’s victory had been ruled correctly, they would’ve had a flawless 5 for 5 victory.
The tournament ends with Kurama having sat out one round and contributed a total of 4 wins and 2 losses, making his total score 2. Hiei sat out twice but still contributed 4 wins and no losses. Genkai was also undefeated but sat out three rounds and only contributed 3 wins. Yusuke sat out one round and contributed 4 wins and a draw. Kuwabara was the only member of Team Urameshi to fight in every round and contributed a total of 3 wins and 3 losses. He and Kurama fought the most battles with a total of six each, but Kuwabara’s contribution ultimately ended up neutral with all of his wins cancelled out by his losses, while Kurama’s losses left him with a positive score of only 2, despite 4 wins for 6 fights. Koenma, who never fought at all, had an overall positive contribution of 1, literally just for showing up.
Team Urameshi won every round by a steep margin. The closest was against Team Ichigaki, which was an all or nothing battle royale, while every other round Team Urameshi had 2-3 victories on the other team, which means that as long as they didn’t die, they could’ve taken a lot more losses and still emerged victorious.
Round 1: 4 fights, 3:1
Round 2: 1 fight, 1:0
Round 3: 6 fights, 4:1+ 1 draw
Round 4: 7 fights, 5:2
Round 5: 5 fights, 4:1
The final standings for the contributions made by each team member reads as follows;
Yusuke: Rounds Missed 1, Fought 5, Won 4, Draw 1, Lost 0, Total 4
Hiei: Rounds Missed 2, Fought 4, Won 4, Draw 0, Lost 0, Total 4
Kurama: Rounds Missed 1, Fought 6, Won 4, Draw 0, Lost 2, Total 2
Kuwabara: Rounds Missed 0, Fought 6, Won 3, Draw 0, Lost 3, Total 0
Genkai: Rounds Missed 3, Fought 3, Won 3, Draw 0, Lost 0, Total 3
Koenma: Rounds Missed 4, “Fought” 1, Won 1, Draw 0, Lost 0 - Total 1
Kuwabara and Kurama were the only members of the team to lose a match while Yusuke was the only one with a draw. However, Kurama’s two losses were both bullshit as he never should’ve been allowed to fight the first battle he lost and the second was a bullshit ruling, while Yusuke’s draw was also a bullshit ruling. So really, Kuwabara’s the only member of the team to take a genuine, deserved L.
Kuwabara showed up the most but also lost the most and ultimately had a lower net positive score than Koenma, who only “fought” one time in one round, but still got the team an automatic win which contributed a net positive of 1. Hiei and Yusuke were the top contributors with 4 wins each, despite Hiei sitting out twice and Yusuke only sitting out once and fighting one more battle, which he did not lose, so it did not negatively impact his score. Genkai got second despite sitting out the most rounds (aside from Koenma) and only fighting 3 times, the least of any member of the team (aside from Koenma).
If the team hadn’t been screwed over by bullshit ruling however, Yusuke would’ve edged out Hiei as the top contributor with his fight against Jin rightfully counted as a win putting him at a total of 5 for 5. Kurama’s slaying of Karasu would’ve given him 5 wins and a loss, giving him a total score equal to Hiei’s at 4. If he hadn’t been forced to “fight” while unconscious, he wouldn’t have had to take the L and his total number of fights would’ve been 5 with 4 wins and a loss, tying his contributions with Genkai at 3. If he hadn’t been forced to fight that battle AND been ruled the winner in the fight against Karasu then he would’ve been the top contributor with 5 wins for 5 battles and 0 losses.
Of course, just looking at the statistics doesn’t really tell you anything about who was pulling their weight on the team. Genkai sacrificing herself before the final round and Kuwabara pretending to die allowed Yusuke to defeat Toguro in the end. Round 2 was a single round, winner takes all battle royale so Kuwabara and Genkai’s participation was a huge difference maker and Hiei and Kurama’s absence could’ve cost them everything. Round 3 was fight until you lose and whoever runs out of fighters first loses the round, so with Hiei and Genkai trapped behind a barricade and Yusuke taken out of the running by his draw with Jin, Kuwabara again was essential to the team being able to advance by defeating Team Masho’s last fighter. Meanwhile, Kurama’s loss to Bakken was negligible since Yusuke was able to wipe the floor with him easily and suffered no injuries which impacted the outcome of his battle with Jin. In Round 4, the winner was the first team to win 5 match-ups, so long as the contestants were alive to fight. So even with Kuwabara’s 2 losses, the fact that Hiei and Kurama had taken out three of Uraotogi’s fighters and left only Shishi and Suzuki to carry against Hiei, Kurama, Kuwabara, and Genkai meant Team Urameshi was still likely to win unless Kuwabara were to keep getting randomly selected for rematches and continued to lose.

Adapting Yu Yu Hakusho
Gosh, I feel like I took such a long break.   It wasn't that long, a week and some change, but it felt long.   Sometimes in times like this I'm working on hidden elements of projects.  I.E. for the DC pitches series, I'm working on future pitches, dreading coming to the next ones in line.  I know that they need to be written and come forward, but they are pitches to fill in some of the space that exists.  A sequel to Aquaman, Flash/Cyborg, and a few others that I just don't care about but DC has set up for me.  If I fall behind, I fall behind.   This whole blog is my thoughts, Ideas, public works for me to just write, preach, or complain.  I don't think a lot of it is important or needed, but it keeps me writing.  In the last eight or so years, I've been in a funk.  Really, since I left college I've been in a depression.  And it comes and goes, but when I suffer from it the thing it affects most is my motivation.  It makes me not want to write.  I realized at some point that I needed to be writing.  So this blog is me writing.  Something.   Most of it won't be edited, it'll be proof read by firefox/chrome spellchecking extensions. Sometimes, I'll go off in random directions that I wasn't expecting based on whatever is tickling my  fancy at the time.   For example, I've been reading Batman comics on my breaks at work, and on my transit commute, I started reading image books I'd fallen behind on.   Y'all should read Bitch Planet, Lazarus, Monsteress, Old Guard, and Black Magick. Often these will sometimes fall out of order and won't make sense.  That's okay.  It's mostly stream of consciousness anyway.  Except public.   I'll mostly post things I'm writing using other peoples properties since I don't have a claim to those and won't get to make them anyway.   Let's do something random.   This is how I'd envision doing a series of movies based on Yu Yu Hakusho.   I know, I know.  American Adaptations of anime aren't great.  But often they are made by studios, and not creators trying to translate those properties.   Let's talk a bit background.  Anyone familiar with this Anime knows that the series is broken into 4 distinct major arcs, and a number of smaller serial adventures.   There are two ways to adapt this.  The first way is a movie per adventure.  That would look something like: Yusuke's Dead and return episodesThe three demons arcThe Genkai TournamentThe Spirit BeastsToguro/Yukina arc Dark Tournament Part 1 ( Team Rokuyukai.)Part 2 (Team Itchigaki)Part 3  (Team Masho)Part 4 (Team Toguro) Sensui Saga Part 1 ( Disciples and The Doctor)Sensui Saga Part 2( Seaman/Sniper)Sensui Saga Part 3 ( Gamer/Gormet)Sensui Saga Part 4(gateway) Three Kings Part 1 (Prelude)Three Kings Part 2 (Tournament) And if we were doing a series of OVA's animated 70-90 minute movies, this could work.   In an American enviroment, I'd want to finish the story.  So to me, it'd be four movies.   Spirit DetectiveDark TournamentDark AngelThree Kings Yes, this means I want to cram all of the first season into a movie.  We can talk about the other three sagas at another time.   Right off the bat, I want to cut out the Spirit beasts arc.  It certainly establishes a number of the dynamics, but I think we can get to those much quicker in other ways.   I also basically want to smash the Genkai tournament and the Three Demons arc together and have it lead to the Toguro/Yukina story.   So I bet y'all are wondering how.  The opening would be pretty short, we could spend the first 20-30 minutes doing the explaining demons and the Spirit world and then just cut out the quest part and have Koenma assign Yusuke to infiltrate the Genkai tournament whose prizes are the three Dark Artifacts.  Yusuke, Kuwabara, Rando, Hiei, Kurama, and a few others are all participants.  Mostly a demon tournament here in the living world.   Establish dynamics through the tournament and have Yusuke win.  Genaki agrees to pass the items over to Spirit World's team, but let's Hiei use the Forlorne Hope to find his sister.  Yusuke, Kuwabara and Kurama agree to help him rescue her.   Then they break into the compound, save Yunkina but Toguro let's them get away.   In the end, Toguro offers Yusuke the chance to fight in the Dark Tournament.   It's pretty easy to set this up as a four part saga, be true to the spirit of the anime and manga, while still being interesting and not bloated.

Yoshihiro Togashi 10 comic strips
H☆S Award: Yoshihiro Togashi's Advice
I gathered Togashi's ten "4-koma" that he drew during the Yu Yu Hakusho serialization in a single post.
The Hop Step Award - H☆S was the Weekly Shounen Jump newcomer manga award aimed at young up-and-coming manga artists. In 1987, Togashi won the 24th H☆S Award Honorable Mention for his work "Jura no Mizuki". Togashi was also one of the judges of Eiichiro Oda's H☆S Award in 1993.
1991
In 1991, during the Four Holy Beasts and Rescue Yukina's Arcs, Togashi drew those five 4-koma to give the H☆S Award participants some advice on how to become a manga artist. He talked about his first works and awards he got, before creating Yu Yu Hakusho.

1992
In 1992, during the Dark Tournament Arc, Togashi drew more five 4-koma to give the H☆S participants advice on creating manga. He used as plot the five opposing teams of Team Urameshi: Rokuyukai, Dr. Ichigaki, Mashoutsukai, Uraotogi and Toguro.
The "Alien N" mentioned in these comic strips is a manga lover from Tenteke Star who lives in Togashi's head. He wrote about him in the Yu Yu Hakusho comics volumes 8 and 9 (scans in this post).

Team Dr. Ichigaki vs. Team Rokuyukai
Tumblr media
Before the match even begins, Dr. Ichigaki has set his plan into motion. He's gathered that Chu is the true leader of Team Rokuyukai from basic intel really, so he's instructed M4 and M5 to get him properly drunk the night before, maybe even drugging him. Either way, M4 and M5 die in the party and ig Chu has a really good time. All three are out tho
Ichigaki was originally wanting 1v1s against Team Urameshi, and that's probably favorable for him here, too
Sidebar, the fuck are M4 and 5? Hiei and Kurama kill them like they were demons, but why do they have a designation then? What does the M even stand for?
Round 1: M1 vs. Roto, who apparently uses the button trick everytime, and somehow wins everytime with it. He tries that empathy shit on M1 and gets destroyed, although only after pushing his button. Roto's brother kills the M's master.
Round 2 & 3: I doubt Gaou and Lennon are strong enough to see the M's 'invisible' weapons, so they're really just fodder. You can tell Chu's a drunk by how poorly he assembled his team
3-0 Dr. Ichigaki Team
Round 4: Rinku vs M3, who was chosen to counter Rinku's long range style. Kuwabara only did so well against Rinku cus the kid was mostly fucking with him. He also only survived against the M's cus they were avoiding his vital parts. I'd say Rinku is even with the M's, although their stamina and singular drive to kill edges him out. Rinku fucking dies
4-0 Dr. Ichigaki Team
Round 5: Zeru vs. The M's. Hiei needed to risk death using the darkness flame to defeat Zeru. The Ichigaki Team was assembled with the purpose of taking Yusuke's body and not to win the Tournament, so I'm giving this to Zeru, even three to one. His range is as good as theirs and so is his melee. Their attacks are apparently very predictable when you can see them
Rokuyukai Team wins. If Dr. Ichigaki had stronger humans, he probably would have no diff'd every team up to Toguro's
Next: Masho vs. Uraotogi

H☆S Award - Special Advice from Yoshihiro Togashi
The Hop Step Award - H☆S is the Weekly Shonen Jump newcomer manga award aimed at young up-and-coming manga artists. In 1987, Togashi won the 24th Hop☆Step Award Honorable Mention for his work "Jura no Mizuki". Togashi was also one of the judges of Eiichiro Oda's Hop☆Step Award in 1993.
In 1992, during the end of the Dark Tournament Arc, Togashi drew these five 4-koma to the October issues of WSJ, with the aim of giving the H☆S participants advice on creating manga. He used as plot the five opposing teams of Team Urameshi: Rokuyukai, Dr. Ichigaki, Mashoutsukai, Uraotogi and Toguro.

I wonder if Togashi was really in doubt and considered Toguro winning the Dark Tournament (lol).
For those who have the "Yu Yu Hakusho Official Character Book Reikai Shinshiroku" (2005), Togashi's 4-koma about Team Ichigaki, Mashoutsukai and Uraotogi were published on the last page. I don't know why Teams Rokuyukai and Toguro were left out. Probably due to restrictions on the number of pages.
I apologize for the bad quality of the edition, but I don't have Photoshop right now, so I had to translate them using a basic image editor. But, I think it's worth sharing this information.
➥ Who is Alien N?
Togashi started talking about Alien N during March 1992, in a series of comments made to the WSJ - Table of Contents (issues 15 to 18):
