Summary: With Eddie conscious for the first time since "the earthquake," a lot has to happen. Notably, he needs to be questioned by the Hawkins Police. But, of course, there may just be a little bit to check on before they deal with that responsibility...
More ST Fics
-----------------------------------------------------
At Steveâs house, everyone was still milling around after he and Lucas left. Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair still had a lot of stuff they needed to wrap their head around, and Nancy and Robin were feeling a little stir-crazy in the busy house, so they got an idea. They could run back to their houses, take showers, get changed, and then take off to ask the drama and band directors for their statements on Eddie.
Which would both get them out of the stressful atmosphere of Steveâs living room and give them something to do. And having something to do about how hopeless everything felt seemed to be the only way to get through it.
So, the two of them stuck around just long enough to make Hop sit down with them and agree to be a source. And to grab a couple of quotes so itâd sound like his words, and if anyone bugged him about it he knew what to say. A little bit here about âAll kids find their own outlets for rebellion, Iâve pulled over almost every student whoâs gone through that high school at least once since Iâve been here.â A line to specify âBut Eddie Munsonâs never been a very big thorn in my side. Canât see him having done all this without a good motive. Which nobodyâs been able to find.â And then they just rounded it out with a note about circumstantial evidence and there not being enough of anything to make sense to pin it on him. All according to a guy who used to be the city's chief of police.
Then they were able to drive off for their next steps, Nancy obviously the one behind the wheel and dropping Robin off before she went back to her place.
When Nancy got back to her house her dad was, thankfully, back at work. So it was just Holly and Amber sitting around a plastic tea set in the living room while Amberâs mom watched the news. She was able to head right on upstairs without much fuss.
But, while it didnât take long for Nancy to take care of her own business, Robin had a bit more of a headache to deal with.
Her mom was again not happy she ran off, but it was easier to settle her down when Robin had her call Steveâs house and a parent answered. Joyce had confirmed that there had been chaperones there all night, and there were a whole bunch of them over, not just Steve and Robin alone. As if that wouldâve meant anything anyway. But one phone call later and she was able to slip away and clean up so she could get to her plans with Nancy.
When she climbed out of the shower, however, she was interrupted by her mother calling for her.
âRobin!â
The girl was squeezing a towel around the ends of her hair to pull the water out - she hadnât washed her hair, but the ends got damp anyway - and she yelled back,â Uh, yeah?â
âYouâve got a call!â
Robin considered trying to run to the wall phone half-dressed or letting her mom try to stall with small talk as she pulled on her jeans. She decided she didnât really like either option,â Just tell Nancy Iâll be ready for pickup whenever she gets here!â
âItâs not a Nancy!â Theresa said from the kitchen as Robin reached for her shirt,â Itâs a Vickie!â
And all at once, she felt her heart jump to her throat. She threw on the shirt, haphazardly yelling,â Iâll be right there!â
Once she got the article over her head, she yanked it down and barreled out of the bathroom. Quickly stealing the phone from her motherâs hands and turning the corner away to be further away from her motherâs listening ears.
âHeeyyyâŚâ She started. But, no way, that sounded so awkward. She coughed and tried again,â I mean, hey. Hey, Vickie. How are- How are you?â
âHi, hi, and hi to you too, Robin,â she said with a light fluttery giggle that made Robinâs heart seize again,â Iâm good. And you are?â
âGood! I am good also.â
Robin was failing at this, right? She was failing at their first phone call. She was all jumpy, and too excited, and not saying words in the right order, and she had to sound so ridiculous-
But she pushed through it anyway. Digging her nails into her palm to try and keep herself from getting all high-pitched from the nerves, she said,â So, uh, howâd you⌠track me down?â
âLooked you up in the phone book. There arenât any other Buckleys in town, you know.â Vickie said it like it was obvious.
Because it kind of was. It was how Robin wouldâve found Vickieâs number if she had felt so bold. Maybe if she and Steve had been able to find an hour alone, he wouldâve built her up to it. But receiving the phone call felt pretty great too.
âYeah, yeah.â Robin confirmed the very normal behavior,â So, did you need anything or- or what had you calling little olâ me today?â
âI, um, sorta thought we could hang out? It was fun spending time with you at the high school the other day, and Iâd like to do it some more. Unless you didnât think it was fun and, instead, Iâm just the kind of girl whoâs nice for company when thereâs literally no one else to talk to, and in that case, Iâll just hang up, and we donât have to talk about this-â
âNo!â Robin leaped in to correct Vickieâs unfounded concern,â No, no, no, I do not think that. I would like to hang out. With you. Too. I had fun on Saturday too. So, yeah, Iâd really like to make some plans to spend time together again.â
And there was Vickieâs cute little fluttery giggle again,â Cool. Um, I know things are still sort of crazy in town, but my parents would give me the keys to the car if you wanted to come up with an errand to run or something, and we could get some lunch after?â
âYeah, that sounds great. Iâd love to- like to do that-â
Calm down, Robin, donât freak her out.
And, just as Robin was taming her excitement, she remembered she was already expecting a girl to come by,â Oh, yeah... I kind of had plans to help Nance with somethingâŚâ
Vickie got a little quieter,â Oh, well, we can raincheck if you want to-â
âNo! I, um⌠actually, if you wanted to help, we were going to talk to Mr. Thompson.â
âThe band director?â the girl asked.
âWell, him and Ms. Reynolds. We wanted to get, like, a statement on Eddieâs character from them. See if they had anything nice to say for an article about how he didnât do it.â
âOh,â Vickie said it like she was trying to understand the idea. And that made sense. She wasnât on the inside team, so she didnât know everything they did. Didnât know Eddie that well. Sheâs just been knee-deep in rumors the whole time.
So Robin supplied,â Which, by the way, he didnât. Itâs a long story, but we were with him pretty much the whole time, and it was actually Jason! Not Eddie, and-â
âJason? Jason Carver?â
âYeah. Like I said, itâs a long story, and I can tell you some more about it later, but Eddie really is innocent. I swear. Thing is, even when he wakes up and can explain everything to get the police to drop the charges, a lot of people probably wonât believe it. Theyâll say stuff about how he got away with it and make his life a living... nightmare," she barely caught herself from saying 'hell'. A mistake she usually didn't have much trouble avoiding, but she was just so focused on Vickie that she almost missed it," Anyway, Nancy wanted to write something for the school paper to help show people heâs a good guy.
âAnd he is? A good guy, I mean.â Vickie still asked, though she was beginning to sound like she believed it.
âYeah. He is.â Robin asserted,â And, since weâre both in band, if you wanted to come, we could probably divide and conquer faster. We can check with Mr. Thompson, and she can go to Ms. Reynolds. So that could be our errand and then get some lunch after.â
âThen, yeah, Iâd love to help. You sure Nancy will be okay with me just kinda hijacking you at the last minute?â
âOh yeah! Definitely. Iâll just let her know whatâs going on, and we can all meet up after to share notes.â
âSounds good. You want to get together now, or do you want me to head over later?â
âNowâs fine. I just got done getting ready to head out with her anyway, so I am all good to go. I can give you the address-â
âItâs in the yellow pages right below the phone number.â
Robin nodded to herself,â Yes, of course, it is, duh. Then I will see you in a few.â
âSee you then, Robin.â
âBye, Vickie.â
Robin bit into her bottom lip under her wide grin as she hung up the phone. It took everything in her to not stomp around her feet to get all the joyous energy out. Her cheeks were probably bright pink, and her hair had to be a mess, and sheâd have to be sneaky to throw on some mascara and her favorite rings before she got out the door if she wanted to look even a little put together.
But it was Vickie. It was Vickie inviting her out for the day. It almost actually sounded like a date. And Robin dared to consider that Vickieâs voice and tone seemed like she knew how it sounded...
Which was insane. She still never thought the chance was real. Even after they volunteered together, and Steve tried so hard to hype her up, she was half-convinced that nothing would come of it besides his false hope. But it was real. And now she had something to work for.
And it was still scary.
But she tried to focus on what Steve told her between all his insisting that Vickie really liked her.
âBe yourself, and all that junk.â
Robinâs own advice thrown back at her. So Robin was just going to have to try to focus on being herself. And all that junk.
Worst-case scenario, sheâll at least be able to tease Steve about the fact that his idea was ridiculous and didnât work. Which felt like a security blanket, honestly. At the end of the day, if the whole thing went horribly, she'd still find some way to laugh about it with her best friend...
âWhat was it?â her mother asked from around the corner where she had been reading the newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee that they both knew was mostly creamer.
Robin poked her head over to look at her and attempted to settle herself to answer casually,â Oh! Vickieâs just gonna help me and Nance with something! Weâre going to head out in a bit and ask the band teacher a few questions.â
âThe band teacher? Mr. Thompson?â Theresa asked folding and setting down the paper on the kitchen table as she leaned back in the chair.
But even Robin could tell her mother must have done everything she could to eavesdrop. Probably sat so still that the chair didnât squeak, didnât drink from her mug so she could listen, and held the paper in loose fingers so it didnât crinkle the whole time... So she already knew all about what she was asking about. Why they needed to play around it, Robin never understood, but they did. Itâs what they did. If they didnât - if Robin tried to skip the unnecessary explanation - it would turn into a conversation about her manners.
So, instead, Robin confirmed,â Yeah, Mr. Thompson,â and waited for the next question.
âWhat do you girls need him for?â
âWell, Eddie was in the school band for a few years. Didnât do pep band or anything, but Mr. Thompson should still know him.â she clarified,â So we wanted to see if he had anything nice to say about him for an article on Eddieâs innocence. Make sure he doesnât get mounted on a stake in the town square the minute the police unlock his cuffs.â
Her mother nodded along and took another sip of her coffee,â Alright. Make sure youâre home tonight or tell me ahead of time if something changes. Before it gets dark out so I know I donât need to worry.â
âI will, Mom.â
Her mother began to pick back up her newspaper and held out an open hand. The signal Robin always returned by blowing a kiss that sheâd pretend to snap her hand around and pat into her chest. Which was another comfort. That was also their thing. Besides any tenseness or misunderstandings, once things settled Robinâs mother would always silently ask for a kiss. And Robin would always send one her way.
And just as Robin was bounding back to the bathroom to brush out her hair and try to doll herself up, at least a little bit, the doorbell rang.
âWow, Vickie mustâve been pretty close,â Theresa commented from her newspaper.
But when Robin opened the door, it wasnât Vickie on her front doorstep, but Nancy.
Nancy lit up when she was met with the other girl, a light bounce on her feet that had her curls spring on her shoulders,â Ready to go?â
âOh, NanceâŚ.â Robin said as she realized she didnât even have time to try and call ahead to let her know about the change in plans.
âYes?â Nancyâs eyes brows quirked, and her smile went a little nervous,â Should I be hurt by that reaction?â
âNo! Um, I just got a call from Vickie,â she began to explain.
Though, just that on its own didnât mean much to Nancy.
âVickie?â
âYeah! She wanted to help out with the teachers.â
âShe did?â Nancy asked.
She found that a little hard to believe, considering the two of them only just got the idea the night before themselves. How did Vickie Nelson hear about it, and why does she care all that much? Clearing Eddieâs name was their business. Not hers.
But Robin just simply smiled back,â Yeah! So I thought itâd be faster if we split up! She and I could scope out the band director - since he already knows us so well - and you can take care of Ms. Reynolds with no problem. And then we can share the info later and see how useful any of it might be.â
âOh.â
âThat okay?â
Nancy wasnât trying to seem sour about it. She wasnât trying to guilt trip her or make a big deal out of it. Robin had seemed all cheery about the idea, Nancy didnât want to rain on her parade. So she pulled herself together and snapped out of whatever funk she slipped into a moment ago.
âUh, yeah, yeah. Itâs fine. Just- here, take the questions we drew up last night. Iâll write myself a new copy, and we can get together later,â Nancy tore out a sheet of paper from her notebook and handed it over.
âYeah, Iâll just be one walkie-away if anything comes up!â Robin nodded, accepting it with her easy-going grin still splayed across her face.
âWell, have fun,â Nancy wished her well as she began to turn back to her car.
âThanks. You too!â Robin threw over her shoulder as she closed the door and was gone.
Okay. That stung.
The whole interaction stung.
Which was weird. Shouldnât have really stung that much. Nancy and Robin were just new friends. Robin had other friends. It was fine. Maybe Nancy was just kind of put off since they made plans together, and now Robin was dropping them off for someone else. Yeah, anyone would be annoyed by that.
Yeah.
But either way, Nancy packed herself back into her car and breathed for a minute. Got her new notes jotted down. Then she saw Vickie park across the street. The other girl stepped out of the car. Looked around and sort of shook out her arms. Like she was nervous or something. But then she set her eyes on Robinâs front door and walked forward with a kind of determination Nancy supposed sheâs worn when she was chasing a good story. Vickie made it up the steps and rang the doorbell, turned around, and shook out her arms again when she locked eyes with Nancy.
She froze. Her eyes were wide, her arms hanging off her a little awkwardly as she just stared back at Nancy in her station wagon. Like sheâd been caught doing something wrong.
Nancy pulled her expression into a tightlipped smile. Something simple and polite but not exactly totally friendly. She was still a little annoyed about getting dumped- more like bailed on. Yeah, bailed on. But she gave a little wave anyway, and Vickie unfroze to wave back, wearing her own nervous smile.
And then the door opened, and Vickie spun around without hesitation. So Nancy started the car and drove off before she got a good look at Robin in her doorway again.
She had work to get to.
Robin and Vickie would climb into the Nelsonâs hatchback and find Mr. Thompson, while Nancy picked up Jonathan to go with her for Ms. Reynolds.
The pair of girls took off for their directorâs house and found themselves gigging a lot to the radio. Their music taste didnât perfectly match up, but there was some notable overlap that they found entertaining for the drive. Vickie complimented Robin's jewelry, she did end up having just enough time to slip some on along with a coat of mascara before her doorbell rang again. Robin absolutely blushed and complimented Vickie. Said she liked the pale teal spirals she wore before, but the dangling green diamonds were great too.
When the drive was done, and they'd actually arrived to talk to Mr. Thompson, he had good things to say. Which was a real relief to Robin.
Turned out Eddieâs not only been in band since middle school, but heâd even stay after school for extra lessons when he was picking up guitar. Mr. Thompson had liked the kid. He was the kind of music student that every teacher wants to teach. The kind that loved it and had a knack for the ability. From piano to guitar, Eddie loved music with an intensity that most people never did. Loved it through his first senior year. He ended up not coming back in â84, even though he was still at the high school. Thompson had tried reaching out, but Eddie seemed different when he did.
Just said he had too much on his plate - his own band and trying to make money to help his uncle - and walked away.
Mr. Thompson let it go. He had other students to worry about.
But Eddie Munson, that was a good kid who loved music, even if he liked to find ways to play that werenât entirely classical or conventional. Mr. Thompson remarked about some combative behavior sometimes. But it was more usually aimed at the other students when Eddie felt like they werenât trying at all or didnât care, less so at the director himself. At the end of the day, Mr. Thompson wondered what had happened to him when he stopped seeing Eddie loiter in the band hall, but he was never very sold on the idea that he had turned into a killer after less than two short years since they last spoke.
And the statements helped Vickie see Eddie as the good guy who was thrown into a bad situation that Robin knew he was.
The other pair were having a less fun time. Nancy was still wound up, and she wasnât really sure why. Which only pissed her off more. Jonathan had something to say but didnât want to spring it on her while she was in a bad mood. Not that it was the kind of news that should be used to ruin a good mood eitherâŚ
Jonathan was in trouble. Really, really in trouble. He couldn't procrastinate for a few months again, but it was so much harder to say something when he was actually sitting next to her.
It was a quiet drive on their end.
Then they met with the teacher. Who also had pretty good stuff to say about Eddie. Turns out drama teachers usually couldnât care less about âconventionalâ. Ms. Reynolds said she was always partial to more experimental fine arts anyway. And Eddie was loud and passionate in classes, thatâs the sort of stuff that thrived in drama departments and drove creativity. He had presence and theatrics and was always paling around with Jeff in the back of her classroom. It was also apparently Eddie that had roped Gareth into helping out with set construction for the musical they just put on. And Josie was in the orchestra pit while Bruce helped with lights. Seemed all of Corroded Coffin had come together in her department at one point or another.
Which is how it had been so easy to convince her to sign off on letting them use the drama room for their Hellfire meetings anyway.
Their little crew was still a little divisive with some of the other drama kids. Their dark clothes and leather and metal set them apart. But Ms. Reynolds always liked them. Always appreciated the way they were willing to do whatever to help. And Eddie was the core, or leader, of that.
She had a few good things to say about the kid. He was weird, but unapologetically himself. And she was happy to go on the record that, as wild as he was, she believed that he didnât do it.
All in all, Robin and Nancyâs mission could be considered a success.
Even if they didnât do it together.
Now, Eddie himself was in a state of confusion.
He was still sort of reeling from the fact that Steve had been there at all. Steve Harrington had been there. Sat in the chair at his hospital bedside wearing stupid, boring jeans and a dusty, red sweatshirt like it was the most casual thing. The chair didnât even look very comfortable. But Steve sat in it, more than once he sat there for a few hours and- thatâs so weird.
Eddie wasnât making it up, right?
He wasnât going crazy from demobat rabies, right?
Steve had been there.
Right?
It was⌠it was just so weird.
Freaky, one could even say.
Yeah, theyâd gotten mixed up in the same problem recently. But to come back for him, to sit at his bedside while he lay unconscious⌠It wasn't âright.â Didnât make sense in the world Eddie Munson came from, even if he was starting to accept that place was long gone.
Steve⌠Steve Harrington was an enigma. For all four of Eddieâs years that they shared at high school together,
Steve Harrington was an enigma.
Even in Steveâs freshman year, he was the talk of the town. Good looking kid, with passable grades that were more easily accepted when everyone saw how he did in competitive sports. He was doing it all. Basketball, Baseball, Swim Team. And on top of that, his folks had crazy money and this big house he could sometimes swing parties at. He was adopted into the top dogs faster than anyone had ever seen.
In his sophomore year, he found his footing. Started to know exactly how he was fitting into things and how to take charge even though he was still an underclassman to most. Started to solidify the group of kids he hung out with along the upper crust. Started getting swarmed by girls. A whole slew of rumors were buzzing around after that about all the babes he was shmoozing between classes.
Though, his junior year might've been the height of it. He seemed like he was soaring in those days. Just basking in the awesomeness of everything in his life going right for him. And then he bagged little miss perfect. And then something happened to him before winter break. And he fell out with most of his old buddies. Focused a little harder on his classes. Fell into place wherever Nancy was.
And then his senior year was like watching him get snuffed out. All at once, heâd lost pretty much everything, except for his girlfriend. And then more shit happened just before winter break⌠and Steve Harrington didnât even have that anymore. So he coasted by until he was out. Just sort of kept his head down and managed his social standing without some of the⌠previous assholery he was a part of. Even if Eddie didnât believe it at the time. Kept trying to be a big man on campus, but most of his moves fell flat until he quietly graduated. And that was that.
And then⌠next time Eddie saw Steve up close, he was pushing him against the wall of his dealer's boat house. Trying to come to terms with all the truly insane stuff Henderson was telling him, Steve just nodded along. Then Eddie was fighting for his life alongside him, a fight he was pretty sure heâd lost. But he didn't. And Steve stuck around.
Freaky.
And thatâs coming from âThe Freak.â
But Eddie didnât have much longer to dwell on it, because a slightly timid voice spoke from his doorway,â EddieâŚâ
And looking over to see - instead of a nurse - one of his own little Hellions, his mouth open up into a wide smile instantly,â Lucas! Howâd you get here so fast? Harrington just left.â
Lucas took his bright expression as a sign to come on further in, so he took steps forward as he made his way to the chair Steve had previously occupied,â I was just across the hall. Iâve been spending time with Max whenever I can.â
âAhhhhâŚâ Eddie nodded sagely, as if he wasnât still playing catch up on what exactly those two had going on,â So, whatâre you doing over here on my side then?â
âWanted to see you up,â Lucas answered simply as he took his seat.
âWish I could give you a show. Iâd do a flip for you if it werenât for these beauties.â Eddie teased with a jingle of his cuffs against the bed rail.
And then Lucasâs face went something sadder as he carefully asked,â ⌠so youâre really okay?"
Eddie shrugged, hoping itâd ease the kid a little. He looked kind of nervous for some reason,â Yeah, man. I guess. Iâm a little tender all over, but Iâll be fine. Not planning to abandon you kids any time soon. Youâd all make a mess of my club if I didnât finish up business myself before graduation.â
Eddie ended his line with a light chuckle, but Lucas didnât respond. He looked a little gone, like his mind was elsewhere. And maybe Eddie shouldâve assumed he was thinking about Max next door, but for some reason, he just had this nagging feeling that it was something else.
âHey, you alright, Sinclair?â he wondered, letting his tone dip a little softer than he usually used it.
âYeah. Yeah. Itâs nothing.â Lucas tried to shake his expression off, but Eddie saw it. And then it clicked.
Oh.
Hellfire.
One of the last things Eddie did before his whole world changed, was exclude Lucas from Hellfire. And things have been so unbelievably crazy the entire time since that day that he completely forgot.
Shit.
He was a bad friend on Friday, and he hasnât said anything to Lucas about it.
âIâm sorry, Lucas.â
And Lucas flinched back into himself. So surprised by the out of nowhere apology he had to sit up and try to joke,â For being in a coma? I know you didnât do it on purpose-â
âNo. For Hellfire,â Eddie corrected,â Iâm sorry you werenât at the last game.â
âOh,â Lucas seemed to be struggling to figure out what to do with the words that he just moved to brush them away,â I⌠itâs fine. I was busy at the championship-â
Eddie stopped him from acting like it wasnât a big deal,â Lucas. Would you just let me apologize to you?â
And Lucas was tense and quiet for a minute. But eventually, he let out a breath and sat back deeper into the chair,â Okay.â
âIâm sorry.â
Eddie started it seriously. Let the words sit on their own for a second before he tried to explain himself.
âIt feels silly now to think about how worked up I was on Friday. Okay? Like, there are way bigger things than me just wanting stuff to go the way I planned. And⌠at the end of the day, I wanted you to be there. I know youâve been juggling Hellfire with basketball, and we usually made it work, but then Hawkins unexpectedly qualified for the big tournament, or whatever, and⌠I donât know. I got pissed. I've always hated the basketball guys. Felt like you were different from them- and you are, for the record. Youâre different than them in all the best ways. But I got disappointed when I thought about you being with the cool crowd instead of the freaks. Made me feel like you were rejecting us, or leaving us behind for popularityâŚâ
Lucas was shaking his head,â Thatâs not-â
âI know,â Eddie told him anyway,â I know thatâs not something youâd do, Sinclair. I was just making myself mad when I couldâve been going about it another way. Iâve got a few faults, and quick to anger is one of âem. It was cool and all meeting the littler Sinclair - donât get me wrong - but I do wish youâd been with us for the end of the campaign. And most of the reason you couldnât be was my fault because I was being stubborn. So Iâm sorry. Really.â
And Lucas looked so much lighter in that chair after Eddie was done. Like some secret fear heâd been harboring since Friday that Eddie hated him was just run off. He even looked a little misty-eyed as he brought back his smile.
âI forgive you,â he said, though after a moment. It took him a bit to realize Eddie was waiting for it.
And then Eddie smiled back at him,â Thanks. Was it a good game at least?â
Well. That astounded the boy.
âYou want to hear about my game? You? Eddie Munson? A basketball game?â
Eddie tossed his head side to side like he was mulling it over,â Well, maybe skip all the boring sporty bits and just tell me the highlights. Final score and stuff. But yeah, tell me about it.â
âWell, um,â Lucas shifted a little closer as he tried to remember how it all happened now that it felt like forever ago,â Weâd been kinda neck-in-neck with the last team all night, the Falcons. Theyâd score, weâd score, weâd score some more, theyâd even it right out. It was back and forth the whole game. And then Adam got knocked down⌠so they pulled me off the bench.â
âWait a minute, you're saying you actually made it on the floor?â Eddie noticed, which made Lucas light up a little brighter. Now more confident that Eddie was actually interested in listening to him talk about his game.
âYeah.â
âAinât that the first time thatâs happened all year?â
He let out a soft chuckle,â Yeah. It was.â
âYouâre kiddingâŚâ Eddie leaned back and shook his head, remembering all the times his freshman would complain to each other at the lunch table about Lucas not getting to do anything worth watching.
âWell, if youâre impressed by that, how do you feel about hearing that I made the buzzer beater that won the whole thing?â he tempted.
And then Eddieâs attention shot back up to him,â What?â
âWe were down by one point, just the one, and there were ten seconds left on the clock. Jason tried to make the shot, but the ball hit the rim and bounced off. And I was the one who caught it. I just- It was just in my hands, and I dove out of the huddle, and⌠there wasnât any time to think about it. So I took the shot. And it spun around the rim, jumped back out, and hit the backboard, but then it sunk. We won. We beat âem, 70 to 69.â
âThatâs⌠thatâs incredible, Lucas.â Eddie sounded dumbfounded. He really wasnât a sporty guy, but even he could picture it. He wasnât dumbfounded out of confusion, he was just that amazed.
Lucas got a little bashful,â It was just-â
âNo. No, thatâs really cool, man,â and then the realization hit,â And we stole your sister so she couldnât cheer you onâŚâ
âYeah⌠I was a little mad about that,â he admitted.
âIâm sorry about that too. You shoulda had someone there.â
âI wasnât alone. The team practically paraded me around. And Steve was there in the audience. Robin was with the band. Even Nancy was there for the school paper. They cheered pretty loud when it happened.â
He sighed a little wistfully,â I wish I saw it too.â
And, well, Lucas knew Eddie was trying to make up for everything, but that had to have been an outright lie.
âYou hate basketball.â
âYeah, I do. But I like you, kid. Youâre one of my little freaks, and it would have been nice to see you do something that cool. Watch the whole school cheer you on even though youâre a nerd like the rest of us in Hellfire.â
And thatâŚ
âYouâre one of my little freaksâ
It did a lot for Lucas. Heâd honestly been a little scared the whole time that the game would be the final straw. The thing that set him away from Hellfire completely. Until the club became something only Dustin and Mike got to be a part of. But Eddie still thought Lucas was one of his.
He wasnât getting thrown away.
âThanks, Eddie,â he finally said when he didnât think his voice was going to crack.
âThank you for letting me in on a little of it. Even though I was a dick on Friday.â
The boy tried to walk that back,â I wouldnât say-â
âYou can say it. One-time free pass since Iâm admitting my shortcomings and humbling myself right now.â
And so, through a warm laugh, Lucas agreed,â Okay, yeah, you were kind of a dick.â
âThank you,â Eddie laughed a little with him,â Now, tell me something about this plan Harrington mentioned. Wanna make sure Iâll be able to play my part well.â
Lucas ran over the bare bones with him. Just spent enough time on it that Eddie would know what to say, and then he called a nurse in. Eddie played like he was a little loopy for a few minutes to pass as him off as having just woken up. She checked his vitals and then called in a doctor who told that same nurse to get on the phone with the police department and Eddieâs uncle.
That was when they kicked Lucas out and sent him back across the hall. To make sure the cops wouldnât have any arguments about the honesty of his interrogation. They really underestimated this Party, if only they knew.
By the end of it, people were on the way and Eddie was getting worn out. Turned out it was hard work waking up from a coma and socializing. Heâd fallen back asleep before anyone new arrived at the hospital, but the next time he woke up someone had arrived.
It was Wayne. His wrinkled uncle Wayne. Uncle Wayne, who just looked so exhausted with his eyebrows pinching together, carefully watching Eddieâs hand held within his. Wet eyes that didn't move or blink as he waited to see his boy come back to him.
So Eddie squeezed it and groaned out,â Hey, old man.â
And the familiar sound of Wayneâs worn and lovingly gruff chuckle was like the sun after such a god-awful week. He took back one of his own hands to wipe under his eyes for a moment before putting it back and smiling at him,â There he is. The man of the hour.â
âHere I am.â Eddie smiled back at Wayne from under sleepy eyes.
His uncle squeezed his hand tighter,â I got real scared there. Thought I wouldnât ever see you again.â
âAw, Wayne, you know you canât get rid of me that easy. Iâm still your problem just like Iâve always been.â
âNo, never been a problem,â he corrected.
âNow, I know youâre getting too sappy and lying to me. I am nothing if not a headache.â
Wayne cracked a deeper smile and leaned in closer to brush his hand gently over Eddieâs dark curtain of hair.
âIâll take the headache, kid.â He told him as he rested his thumb on his nephewâs cheek.
Which was such a Wayne thing to do and say. He was a manâs man. Working with his hands and watching westerns on his days off. That's the kind of classic man he was. They didnât get all mushy on one another very often. It was an unspoken but entirely understood thing, that they loved each other.
But that line was such a Wayne way to say it.
And then Wayne mentioned,â You know, you didnât didnât get to tell me how the story went.â
âThe story?â Eddie wondered for a moment.
âThe one you were finishinâ up on Friday. With the big twist surprise you were settinâ up for those kiddos.â
âOh.â
Because, of course, Wayne would bring up his DnD campaign.
Eddie told him about every single one.
He never bothered with giving him stats or explaining the different dice rolls and how that all worked, but he would practice the story with him. Heâd share the bits heâd assume Hellfire would work through during that weekâs session while he got all his notes prepared, and - usually the next day Wayne was able - theyâd sit down over breakfast, and heâd tell his uncle all about how the party actually played through it.
Wayne loved it. It was like listening to his own private movie told by his nephew. Heâd get version one with how it was supposed to work, and then heâd get version two with all meandering and funny jabs from the characters and how they came around the problem. And Eddie would always light up while he talked about it.
But he never got to see Eddie after Friday night, after what was supposed to be the big finale.
âSo, howâd it go?â he asked again.
And maybe it wouldâve been wise of Eddie to spend the time with his uncle telling him what sort of week heâs just had. Answering all the questions and explaining how serious he was when he talked about monsters this time. But, strangely, it seemed so much more important to talk about the session.
âWell, those rugrats⌠they really pulled out all the stops.â Eddie told him, shifting around as he continued,â You see, Lucas has this big game come up suddenly. He couldnât be there. And it would have meant they couldnât play through the end of the campaign that night. So Dustin and Mike were running all over school trying to find someone to sub in for him. And then they showed up at Hellfire with Lucasâs kid sister! Iâm not kidding! This little middle schooler named Erica struts in. And Iâm looking at her, thinking thereâs no way sheâs hardcore enough. Sheâs practically a baby- and she probably doesnât even know how DnD works- and sheâs all pretty ân pink- so thereâs just no way! She doesnât have the metal for it, end of story. I was sure of it. But she busts in any way with this little monologue about just how hardcore she is⌠And it honestly blew me away a little. So we initiate her as an unofficial member and then we all sat down to start the gameâŚâ
And they just talked. Talked and talked about the game. Every second of it made Wayne feel a hundred times better. The longer Eddie spoke about one of his greatest passions, the more Wayne could be sure he wasnât going to crumble to pieces in his hands.
After that was when Eddie knew he had to tell him about all the shit heâs been through. He couldnât even imagine not telling his Wayne how crazy it really was. Not explaining why he came home Saturday morning to a body in their trailer. Not explaining why he so absolutely couldnât go back to his uncle to ask for help. Not explaining that he climbed into hell and almost died in there for a chance at ending some great evil.
That just wasnât something he could keep from him. Wayne would know he was bottling something up. He was always good at making him talk.
So he talked.
When they got through it all, Wayne just huffed and told him,â You really did scare me, you know? I wasnât sure if Iâd get a call to identify a body, or if youâd just run away from everything here and Iâd never know any better-â
âSorryâŚâ
âNo. Donât you say you're sorry. You didnât do nothing wrong. Weâre going to make sure they know that.â
Eddie rolled his eyes,â I donât think theyâll just take your word for it.â
And then, from the door came the phrase,â Itâs not just his word.â
And it was Dustin Henderson, his mother standing right behind him.
âHenderson,â Eddieâs relief swelled to see the kid alright, then he added,â And Mrs. Henderson.â
Officer Callahan had been hot on their heels showing up behind them as he started saying something about them not being allowed to see Eddie until they questioned him, how they had been instructed to go wait in Maxâs room with the others. So the others were there too. But the two of them walked in anyway, completely ignoring the officer. Claudia took Eddieâs free hand, similarly to how she had Steveâs just the other morning.
And Eddie was just shocked that someone who was effectively a stranger was looking at him with kind eyes. He hadnât expected to get that kind of treatment.
âMy Dusty-bun tells me you stuck with him through the⌠earthquake. Made sure he was okay, and stayed safe even though the goddamn world was falling to pieces. Is that true?â she asked him, already very sure of the answer but wanting to hear him say it himself.
And something was flickering in the way she said it. âThe⌠earthquake.â So she knew it wasnât really an earthquake. Which - as he thought about it - he remembered hearing Steve mutter about some parents finding out.
So Eddie gripped the bedrail and pushed himself to sit up in his bed, trying to be just a little awestruck, and answered.
âYes maâam,â like how Wayne always wanted him to say to adults. He usually bucked against the whole respecting your elders and authority figures thing, but for Dustinâs mother, heâd make an exception.
Her sweet smile pressed further into her plush cheeks, and she reached up to gently pat his hair with her hand, so very similar to how Wayne had,â Thank you. I will never be able to thank you enough for helping watch out for my baby-â
âMom-â the kid groaned as if he could possibly still be surprised by the way his mother coddled him.
âSo if you ever need anything, you can always reach out to us. Donât even bother asking first, just take what you need.â
âThatâsâŚâ
Ridiculous. It was ridiculous to receive an offer like that from some little suburban mom. Even if she shared Dustinâs DNA and contributed to the weirdness of the little guy, she was still⌠just some mom. Not his.
But she pressed on,â You saved me from my greatest fear. So whatever you need. And all of us are going to make sure everyone knows what really happened, as much as we can-â
âOkay,â Callahan tried to step in,â You canât talk about the investigation before weâve been able to question him-â
But then Ms. Henderson raised her finger to silence him while she turned back to Eddie,â Do you feel up for their questions, honey?â
And that stunned him a second time. To watch Claudia Henderson shut up a policeman with a single finger and wait for Eddieâs cue before she was going to let anything happen. It was just stunning.
âUh- yeah. Yeah, sure,â he croaked out when words came back to him.
âAlright,â she looked back at the man in blue,â Then ask him your questions so you can uncuff him and leave the poor boy alone.â
Callahan was readying to tell her about how thatâs not exactly how it works,â Maâam-â
When Powell entered the room and interrupted him with a warning tone,â Callahan.â
âThey-â he began sputtering and motioning his hands at the pair who werenât supposed to be in the room.
But before he could really argue, the Chief spoke to the mother,â Ms. Henderson, you know you were supposed to go across the hall-â
âWell, we got over here just fine.â she innocently shrugged.
Chief Powell looked back at the officer with a disappointed glare as Callahan attempted to excuse himself,â I tried-â
But Ms. Henderson was absolutely not allowing the two of them to waste time on it,â Are you going to question him and get it over with?â
âYes. Okay? If we could have everyone clear the room now? Heâs not a minor; he can do this on his own.â
And then Claudia Henderson had the gall to look back at Eddie and wait for his blessing. Again. Like she was really willing to put her foot down and argue some more with the cops. Which- okay- maybe that was pretty badass. Way more than he was expecting from some prim and proper suburban mom. So Eddie gave her the nod she was looking for, and she placed her hands around Dustinâs shoulders to steer him into the other room.
Wayne gave his hand another tight squeeze and said,â You just holler and Iâll knock that door down, you hear?â
âIâll be fine. Get outta here already,â Eddie squeezed his hand back.
Then Wayne let him go, and it was the first time he wasnât being held since he arrived. His palm felt a little cold now. But he was okay. He was going to be okay.
Wayne left the room and followed the rest into the Maxâs. They hadnât all arrived yet. So far it was Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, Lucas, Erica, Mike, and now Dustin. They are also accompanied by Karen, The Sinclairs, Susan, and now Claudia and Wayne.
Hop and Joyce were on their way with Will, El, and Argyle. Murray said heâd stay behind âstrategizingâ. And Vickie was supposed to be dropping Robin off any minute. Apparently, they had just sat down to eat an early lunch together when Steve reached out to everyone. Which had been news to him. So heâd been waiting with a very specific kind of impatience ever since. If he didnât get to squeeze every ounce of information about her first date - because he was absolutely calling this a date - by the end of the night, he was going to go crazy.
In the meantime, everyone mingled the best they could. Wayne thanked Claudia for her ferocity for his boy, she thanked him for raising such a good one. Mike was on the walkie asking for updates on how close the Hopper-Byers car was to the hospital every few minutes, going on and on about how excited he was for El and Will to meet Eddie. Nancy seemed tense but told everyone they had used the morning to make some progress in cleaning things up. And Dustin was talking to Lucas and Erica about how Eddie looked before he and his mother were kicked out.
The questioning went well.
At least, it felt like it did.
Eddie didnât really have anything to compare it to, seeing as heâd always kept himself out of too much trouble before. But it seemed like it wasnât awful. There wasnât any yelling, and while they asked him to be more specific or clarify what he was saying, they hadn't argued against his claims. So maybe Steve was right when he said they were leaning his way. And maybe Robin and Nancy would be able to turn it all around for him somehow.
But he reminded himself not to get carried away and hope for too much while Chief Powell finished up.
âWeâve taken your statement, and will be going over it with the evidence and the other testimonies we have collected. We donât have an answer for you now, but weâll be back tomorrow with the final decision on how the Hawkins Police Department will be proceeding with the charges.â
âOkay.â
âIn the meantime, the cuffs stay on. And the visitors can come back in, but weâll be posting an officer to keep an eye on you-â
And that was when the door swung open. Seemed like the people around there really didnât care about following the rules. Chief Powellâs face twitched as he braced himself to tear into whoever just barged in when he found himself looking at a dead man.
âChiefâŚ?â
It was the only word that came to him after referring to the man by the title for so many years. He looked different now, but he was still so unmistakably Jim Hopper.
He stepped into the room and motioned,â From what I hear, thatâs your job now, Cal.â
âYou⌠youâre⌠how are youâŚâ he sputtered, Callahan next to him just standing in silent shock with a hand over his mouth.
âLong story. One I donât really want to go over. How about we call it a kidnapping and move on?â
âKidnapping?â Powell asked,â But you- eight months, Chie- Hop⌠Hop, itâs been eight months since⌠you âdiedâ in the mall fire. Did they all lie about you being there, or-â
âNo, I was there. Donât try to take away my Hero of Hawkins medal now. It was the dying part that just didnât stick.â Hopper corrected.
Then Callahan found his voice,â But whatâre youâŚ?â
Hop shrugged and looked at Eddie for a second, which was weird because theyâd never really spoken, but now the guy was on his side, technically,â Was listening by the door and thought I could ask about possibly forgoing some of that procedure.â
âWhat?â
âLook, the kidâs clearly been through hell enough already, Cal-â
âHopâŚâ Powell shook his head,â This case is already messy enough as is. Everything needs to be by the book from this point on-â
âCome on. Call it calling in a favor?â he tried.
Which pulled a small smile to the otherâs face because it was just so much like him to ask,â You have no favors to call in.â
âYouâre right, I never stocked any up. But⌠what about it anyway?â
âLook⌠as soon as the choice has been made, youâll know. We arenât dragging our feet on this, but we canât be caught making mistakes. Iâll assume youâve seen the news?â
âYes, Iâve seen the-â
âThen you know, this has to be done right. There are too many eyes on it, and too much has gone off the rails already.â He emphasized. Then he spared a glance back at Eddie, and the kid did seem kind of pathetic.
âBut we can loosen the cuffs a notch. Looks like Daniels put âem on a little tight.â He gave, stepping up to unlock them and clicking them back in place more comfortably.
Hop came in close behind him to ask,â Whoâll be assigned the babysitting duty?â
âI was going to give it to Nichols,â Powell answered.
âOkayâŚâ Jim considered,â Yeah, Nichols is goodâŚâ
âAlright then. Go on and invite everyone else in and tell them the protocol. We have work to do back at the station.â
âCalvin?â he asked as the officers headed for the door.
âJim?â
âThank you.â He said,â Nichols isâŚâ
âNichols is good. I know. Heâs good at his job and not an ass like some of them, so he shouldnât make this next day of waiting too difficult on him.â Which was a phrase that made Eddie feel a whole lot better about the guy,â And even if you donât want to explain where the hell youâve been the last two-thirds of the year, least you could do is bring a cup of coffee by my new office and tell me what the hell youâre doing now.â
âYeah. Least I could do.â Jim agreed.
Then Powell nodded and left. Just like that, Eddie had officially done all he could to clear up the mess, and then it was out of his hands. It felt weird, to be on the other side of the fear. He had been dreading it the entire time since he saw Chrissy die right in front of him. âHow do I get out of this?â played over and over in his head whenever the world was too quiet. And now he faced it. And he just has to lie there and wait until thereâs news.
But before he could stew in it any longer, there were all his kids - plus a few new faces - packed in the door of his room. The adults excused themselves, some heading off to pick up some food from the diner in town for everyone to eat for lunch while the rest just headed on home themselves. Each of them decided to let the youngsters reunite on their own for a little bit.
As soon as Eddie saw Michael Wheeler coming in, he broke out an excited,â Hey! Itâs Little Wheeler! Where have you been all week? Didnât you hear we were all hanging out?â
Mike, who was just a moment ago beaming to see his DM awake, let his expression instantly drop at the nickname.
âLittle Wheeler?â he questioned.
Eddie explained,â Well, yeah, I canât call you and your sister both âWheelerâ after all.â
Mike argued,â I should be the original âWheelerâ!â
âIâm not calling Nance âBig Wheelerâ, dude.â Eddie rolled his eyes,â Plus sheâs cool. Way too cool to not be the standalone âWheelerâ. You know?â
Nancy was wearing a pretty smug look when Mike turned on her,â You stole my DM.â
âWhat?â
âYou stole my DM!â he repeated,â I leave for one week, and suddenly Iâm âLittle Wheelerâ?â
She shrugged her shoulders at her brother,â Thatâs not my fault. Stop being âLittle Wheelerâ material.â
âIâm the taller one!â
Eddie reached out his hand to try and get in between them,â Wheelers, Wheelers, you're both pretty. No need to fight for the affections of my heart-â
But Mike wasnât even listening,â Give it back!â
âGive it back?â she quoted back to him.
âGive it back!â
âIâm not âgiving it backâ, Mike. Itâs a nickname. Earn a better one if youâre going to be so worked up about it. How about we give âLittle Shitâ a try?â she offered.
They kept bickering between themselves as someone new stepped in a little closer to Eddieâs bedside.
He recognized her from the empty space in his head theyâd met a few days ago, but he still didnât really know her yet.
And then she looked at him with bashful eyes and began speaking,â I like your hair. Itâs⌠pretty.â
Eddieâs hair reminded her of her own before she woke up in that bed at the NINA project to see they'd cut it all off. She really liked having long hair. It was something that she was able to look at the mirror and say âItâs been so long since I was trapped there that now my hair goes past my shoulders.â She canât say that anymore.
Because they caught her again.
And maybe she walked right into it but⌠she liked her long hair.
Missed it now.
And Eddie said, with a flourish,â Why thank you, mâlady. Not exactly the style of flattery I usually aim for, but I am more than happy to accept it regardless.â
Thatâs right. Mike had said that Eddie was pretty âmetal.â So maybe there was another word that fit him better.
âItâs also really⌠bitchinâ.â
And Eddie just lit up. His eyes and smile widened at the soft-spoken girl,â Oh my god, youâre my favorite now. Please, come closer, you little angel!â
He beckoned her with his hand as much as he could while still being restrained, and Elâs own smile grew with her giggle as she stepped up to his bedside with more confidence. Her brother was just behind her, and Eddie had been about to greet him when two of the kids he already knew well enough yelled at him.
âHey!â Mike and Dustin protested in unison. Both of them were clearly mad about the fact that he just called El his favorite, and he didnât even know her name yet.
âHey yourselves!â Eddie shot back,â This cutie saved my life and just gave me the greatest compliment Iâve ever received!â
âBut thatâs- Thatâs not-â Dustin sputtered before turning to one of the other older boys in the room,â STEVE!â
âWhat do you want me to do about it? I canât magically make you his favorite again-â
To which Mike took offense,â Hey!â
âPlease, Mike, do you really think you were Eddieâs favorite?â Dustin asked him with that same tone Steve kept saying heâd do something about, yet hasn't,â It was obviously me. And itâs obviously going to be me again, once I retake my throne from this thief!â
El scrunched her eyebrows together at him,â I did not steal it.â
âYes, you did! With magic powers and sweet words!â
Eddie chimed in,â Donât forget the cute face.â
âAnd your cute face!â he added with an accusatory finger, though it just made El laugh again.
Lucas shrugged and sided,â Iâm on Elâs team. You canât not like her. I tried. Didnât get very far.â
She gave him a courteous nod,â Thank you.â
However, Mike seethed âTraitor!â in the other boy's direction.
âSo, Elâs the name of the darling I owe my life to?â Eddie asked her, ignoring the boyâs play fighting.
âYes. Short for Eleven.â She answered.
âEleven?â
âThereâs a lot we didnât have time to explain fully the first time around,â Steve told him.
âI wasnât even here when Eddieâs life went to shit! I think that means I get bonus points.â Mike got louder as he tried to argue.
Lucas was the one to disagree,â That doesnât make any sense. None of us screwed him over.â
âIf anything, you werenât even here to try and help him out of it. I think that means we deserve bonus points.â Dustin added.
âThey are so immature.â Erica rolled her eyes and said to Steve.
âI know they are.â he agreed,â At least you behave when you arenât too busy blackmailing us-â
âEddie! Youâre really awake!â Robin rushed in, finally arriving with the rest of them.
âLast one in, Robin?â Eddie asked.
âI wasâŚâ She spared a glance at Steve, who was already looking at her pretty intently, before she put her focus back on the one in the bed,â looking into something. For you!â
Erica leaned in closer to Steve and whispered while Robin rambled about her meeting with Mr. Thompson,â It is not blackmailing when I am just insisting on the return of the goods and services that were pledged to me-â
âItâs a little blackmail-y, or like, at least blackmail-adjacent the way you do it,â Steve whispered back.
âAnd yet, I didnât even need to apply the pressure for five minutes before you broke. Seems like you just knew I was right.â
Steve deadpanned at her,â Okay, I take it back. You donât behave. No one in The Party behaves.â
âOh, thatâs the truth.â Robin hastily agreed when she caught the back half of what he said.
âOh, so this is The Party?â Eddie asked with a motion to the room.
Mike pipped up,â Yeah. Weâre The Party.â
Nancy gave a light shove to his head,â Itâs what theyâve been calling themselves since the day Dustin moved into town. And once we all got mixed up in everything together, we all kind of adopted it.â
"We're still the originals, though," Mike mentioned with a motion between the four boys.
âSo thatâs what the little angel meant. Not celebrating.â Eddie figured, finally connecting the dots. But should he really have expected the person he confused with God to be using fantasy terms that way? Canât blame the guy for assuming sheâd meant it by the normie definition.
âNo, she was not referring to an actual party.â Will joked beside her.
âGood, because I was going to be pissed if you were all just having fun while I was dying.â He huffed.
Steve stepped forward,â You werenât dying-â
âOh no, he absolutely was.â Robin interrupted him,â You heard El, she had to keep him together enough to even make it to the hospital-â
âWhat?â
And there was Wayne at the door, along with the other parents all holding to-go bags of food for everyone. Thus started the third - and hopefully last - explanation of what was actually going on. They couldnât really pretend like everything was normal since Eddie had already told Wayne most of what happened to him. So they just explained it further. Went over the bits that Eddie didnât know anything about or didnât understand fully. They had the discussion over burgers and fries, and vending machine sodas and candies. Which made all the information go down a little bit easier.
Eddie learned why a child would be named Eleven.
Wayne learned that his boyâs innocence rests on the integrity of a mountain of lies.
Which was really scary to think about.
So they tried not to.
They all started getting to know one another a little better, seeing as how theyâd be putting together more plans to fight off the end of the world. Wayne and Hopper noticed a few similar mannerisms between them. Eddie was more properly introduced to El and Will. And Jonathan and Argyle. And Joyce. Those were all the new faces he was getting a real conversation with. According to everyone, there was some guy who didnât feel like coming in, two more on the way, and the other parents had headed off back to their homes until visiting hours were over. They didn't want to overwhelm Eddie and thought the kids should get to spend some time with him. Which was pretty sweet, considering he was a wanted man who had been on the run just a few days before.
It was about then that they were suddenly interrupted by a distressed woman in a pantsuit and sunglasses at their door.
But before she even got a word in, Nancy was standing up from her seat and very sharply telling her,â Out.â
The woman peeled off her sunglasses and responded through a clenched jaw,â I see you found our missing persons⌠and then some.â
She added that last bit while eyeing Jim.
âGet out.â Nancy insisted.
âMs. Wheeler-â
âI said âGet outâ. So get out of this room.â
âNancyâŚ?â Joyce asked, concerned. Nancy had never revisited her grudge against this particular government agent any of the times they ran over things.
The woman pushed,â We have to talk about what happened.â
âIâm not saying a goddamn word to you people. Since we canât trust you not to make it worse.â
Then it was Hopper trying to calm her down,â Kid-â
âThey handed her back to him.â Nancy said firmly, making strides around Eddieâs bed to put herself between the woman and the rest of the room, tucking El right behind her,â So no. They donât get to get close to her again.â
âHowever you feel about things, we still need to get on the same page if we have any hope of cleaning things up around here.â
âItâs not happening. Not here, not today, and not anywhere near El. I donât care what you say, itâs not.â
The woman seemed exacerbated,â We have to-â
Finally, Nancy let out the yell she had been fighting back all day,â Get out!â
Which was a sight. For everyone. To see her lose her cool like that.
It was different than the way she fought monsters.
It was⌠something else.
âMs. Wheeler-â
âTomorrow then? We all get together and discuss things tomorrow?â Joyce offered the compromise, still making up her mind on how exactly she felt about the situation but sure about wanting to get it taken care of.
Hopper answered for their guest in his own gruff voice,â Weâll talk tomorrow.â
After a moment of silence, the agent decided to take the deal on the table,â Iâll leave my card. Thereâs a number on it. Call and make plans for the meeting, or Iâll show up unannounced again. With backup.â
Nancy was gearing up to walk closer when Steve grabbed her shoulder,â Get out-â
âIâm leaving. Make sure you call.â She said, pressing the slip on top of the light fixture by the door.
And then she was gone.
âYou know⌠I was going to give this welcoming committee a five-star review in the paper until she showed up. Really soured the mood, you know?â Eddie joked, trying to relieve some tension.
Nancy huffed and returned to her seat,â Sorry. The news mustâve aired footage of the police arriving for questioning and were probably still running the cameras when everyone showed up, soâŚâ
âWe werenât even thinking about that when we got hereâŚâ Jonathan muttered beside her.
âItâs okay. Still a pretty rockinâ day from my end. Being not dead and all.â
âThatâs it, man. We just gotta focus on the positives.â Argyle smiled back at him.
âWhatâs the plan for the meeting?â Robin asked nervously.
âElâs not coming.â Nancy set the condition sternly.
âAgreed.â Hop nodded and crossed his arms.
âBut-â the girl tried to argue.
âNo. We have to assume she wonât be alone, and while Sam mightâve been on your side, we donât know what theyâre doing now on their own. We need to know how everything stands. If there are people who arenât our allies, we arenât giving them an opportunity to get ahold of you again.â
âWe canât just leave her alone, Hop,â Joyce noted.
âSo, you donât.â Wayne thought,â You bring her here on the way to the meeting. There are all the cameras at the entrance, an officer will be posted by the room, and this hospital is still full of people. If someone tried to break her out of her against her will, they wouldnât get very far without drawing a lot of attention.â
Jim nodded some more,â Yes. Yes, thatâs a good idea. El can stay here until we finish.â
âMore time to hang out with my guardian angel? Sounds good to me.â Eddie agreed with a smile, hoping El wouldnât be nervous about the idea.
âSo then, tomorrow morning. Most of the rest of us. Some place public. Get this dealt with so we can figure out the next move.â Jim concluded.
And no one else said anything, but they all agreed. That was the plan.
There wasnât much more to say the evening, so when four oâclock arrived and a nurse was kicking everyone besides Wayne out and introducing Officer Nichols, they all went their separate ways. Most of the kids' parents were pulled up by the hospital entrance for pickup. Except for Robin who Steve whisked away so they could spend a few hours doing some much-needed checking in. Robin just had her first date after all, so there was so much to talk about before he needed to drop her off at home.
She told him everything. All about the phone call and Vickie's new earrings. About all the ways Vickie made her laugh and how she could swear sheâd noticed Vickieâs eyes lingering on her when she would get lost in her rambles. About the way that Vickie sat right next to her while they talked to Mr. Thompson on his front porch. About the way that Vickie leaned against her and touched her shoulder and seemed to be so close sometimes that Robin swore her head was spinning.
She talked about it all with Steve.
Because telling her best friend about her amazing day made it so much more real.
And that was the moment Steve decided Robin wasnât coming with them to the meeting. He had already been pretty sure about it but watching her bursting with excitement about her first real chance at loving a girl made him certain.
There was probably going to be nothing major that happened. It would be stupid of the Feds to try and take out something like a dozen people in a small town where everyone knows each other. But he wasnât going to risk it. Just couldnât imagine risking Robin disappearing before she got to kiss Vickie for the first time and feel loved in that sweet special way that romance can hold.
With everything Steve knew about love and everything he didnât, he knew that Robin deserved to have her chance to find out about it.

Headcanon Games
About The Games
With current events being what they are, we are all in need of some serious distraction. In the interest of something to do, Iâve come up with some weekly headcanon challenges that people can participate in as actively or casually as they please.
The dates themselves are more like guidelines than rules - this is not meant to add pressure or stress to anyoneâs day but provide a fun exercise to keep the dash busy and alive throughout the course of a tough time.
There are no rules to how many challenges you need to complete per week and nothing stopping you from completing week one during week four or, if youâre just not feeling a weekâs theme, doing another week entirely. Itâs all up to you to have fun at your pace!
For multimuses, you can answer with a different character each day, or run a death march round and try and do something each week for each character! I would not recommend trying to do everything for every character, since thereâs no trophy for it but hey - you do you!Â
Please reblog this challenge so that others can see it and participate in it, or link to it somewhere in your headcanon. The more this spreads ( especially in smaller communities ) the more activity it will hopefully inspire!
Due to how â unintentionally long this turned out to be, I am using a read more to spare everyone a mile long adventure! There are two others in this series as well, if you want a more fandom flair to it!Â
Criminal Minds Version
Harry Potter Version
Week 1
[ April 07 Â - Â April 18 ]
This week will be longer than the others in order to compensate for time spent spreading this around and for the fact the idea didnât come to me on a Sunday. This weekâs theme is origins and first experiences.Â
April 07 - Describe your characterâs earliest memory.Â
April 08 - How was your character raised, and by whom? How did these early influences impact them?
April 09 - What was the first skillset your character picked up? ( Reading, cooking, running around like a sheer hooligan --- )
April 10 - How did your character get educated? Are they self taught, home schooled, tutored, private or publicly schooled? What were their best and worst subjects?Â
April 11 - What were the things your character most wanted to learn, and were those topics covered or did they have to research them independently?Â
April 12 - Describe your characterâs first encounter with injustice and how it impacted or changed their worldview. If it wasnât the first encounter that caused a significant paradigm shift, detail one that did. ( And maybe cover why the first one didnât cause any shifts! )
April 13 - The first time your character performed a selfless act - did it come naturally, or under a sense of internal or external pressure? Was it the start of a trend in consistent selflessness, or avid avoidance of needing to be selfless?Â
April 14 - The first time your character broke a rule - what were the consequences and how did this shape their view of responsibility? Â
April 15 - The first time your character lost someone important to them, how did they cope and who did they turn to? How did the aftermath shape their view of loss and recovery?Â
April 16 - The first time your character displayed proficiency at something naturally, indicating their potential to be great, were they proud or nervous? How did the response of others impact their view of the budding skill? Did they become great? If so, how do they feel about it now, after those earlier experiences of expectation?Â
April 17 - The first time that your character encountered something they couldnât explain, how did they handle it? Did they investigate, pretend they hadnât seen it, ask someone for help? Is this normally how they handle situations that confuse them now, or have they evolved to display other responses over time?Â
April 18 - What was your characters first fear? Are they still afraid of it?Â
Week 2
[ April 19 Â - Â April 25 ]
This weekâs theme is seemingly insignificant details that other characters might pick up on and maybe use in threads as a way of demonstrating how well they know your character! Â
April 19 - What are their go to foods? Their go to drinks? What small things do they do to modify things ( lemon with their tea? just honey on their toast? wonât eat berries without a small sprinkle of sugar? ) that other people might pick up on, and learn to prepare for them.Â
April 20 - What scents are most associated to your character? Are they always chewing peppermint gum? Do they carry a satchel full of fragrant herbs? Is there a perfume profile they cultivate? Do they smoke? Wear a lot of leather? Work with oils ( masseuse, mechanic, boatswain, all very different smells there ) Drink a ton of coffee or alcohol? Have pets? Ride horses? All thoughts to consider ( and tons more ) to develop what your character smells like.Â
April 21 - When your character dresses in the morning, do they have any signature items that might be notable? Always a gun holster or sword sheathe on the left side, forever finding a way to incorporate a particular color into an ensemble, notoriously missing the top button on their shirt, a family ring? If there isnât a specific thing, what about your characterâs style is memorable - how would you describe what they wear? Are they always formal, buttoned up and prim, or do they prefer a casual, even rumpled look? If someone were to see a Certain Profile on the street to immediately think of your muse, what would the profile be?
April 22 - Letâs talk signs of stress - what are your characterâs tells? Do they move their hands more or less? Do they become physically agitated or seemingly lethargic? Talk faster, talk less? How would their friends and colleagues know something isnât right?
April 23 -Â Personal passion or hyperfocus your character has that they know a lot about and are always happy to talk about that someone could bring up as a means of distracting your character in a stressful or emotional situation?
April 24 - Something your character never has enough of or is constantly misplacing ( pens, hair ties, etc ) that a Good Buddy⢠should keep spares of to offer up in times of need?
April 25 - Secret Santa time! What gifts are always sure to please your character, or at least show that Santa has some observational skills.
Week 3
[ April 26 Â - Â May 02 ]
For this week, lets explore the psychological profile of your character by digging into all the things that really make them tick.Â
April 26 - Is your character ruled by their heart or by their mind? Do they respond emotionally to situations or do they take time to think things through analytically before taking action?Â
April 27 -Â What are their pressure points? ( Things that set them off )Â What techniques do they use to cope with stress and trauma?
April 28 - Three moments that they would alter if they could. ( A great way to invite AU opportunities through threading those moments differently later! )
April 29 - What are your characters core values? The things that guide their behavior and decisions.Â
April 30 - What books, authors, quotes, films, plays or other influential mediums hold a significant impact on them? Why do they enjoy those things, what is their overall significance on their lives? Are these the things they turn to in order to cope, nostalgic pieces they hold on to, or things that helped shape a world view?Â
May 01 - When making risks assessments, what to they weigh in? When do they throw in the towel and go all in, what to them is a safe gamble verses what is low risk for high gain and vice versa?
May 02 -Â Do they have any idols or heroes that they look up to and aspire to be like? Â What does their best self look like?
Week 4
[ May 03 Â - Â May 09 ]
Jumping into lighter topics, for this week weâre going to look at happy memories to remind ourselves that no matter what hell canon ( or lets face it, we writers! ) has put our character through, they have had good times too.Â
May 03 - What is your characterâs happiest memory?
May 04 - When thinking of happy memories, who features most often in them? Is there a particular place or person that recurs most often when your character thinks on the good times?
May 05 -Â If someone else were to think of your character at their happiest, how old was your character and why was that time so joyful?
May 06 - Happiest memory involving an animal? Be it their pet, someone elseâs pet, a zoo moment - something that sparked joy and had animals involved.
May 07 -Â Talk about the best prank they ever took part in, or remember observing.
May 08 - Describe a time when your character went out of their way to make someone else happy, and how it worked out.Â
May 09 - When they are feeling down, what things do they do to cheer up? Are any of these things related to happy memories or nostalgia?
Week 5
[ May 10 Â - Â May 16 ]
Bouncing off our happy memory high, characters who may be more withdrawn, depressed, grumpy or just plain unsociable might be feeling confident enough to give us a look into their accomplishments, goals, and insecurities - so letâs dig in while theyâre still malleable!
May 10 -Â What would your character claim as their greatest accomplishment? Would others agree, or say something different?
May 11 -Â Detail a time your character was undermined and how that impacted them. Do they no longer try, or do they just try harder?
May 12 -Â If they could choose what they were known for in the world, what would they want their legacy to be?
May 13 - What motivates them to keep going when things get difficult?Â
May 14 -Â Talk about a time when your character let their insecurities get the best of them. Did they learn anything, or did it only exacerbate the problem?
May 15 -Â Are they proud of where they are today or are they still fighting toward a goal?
May 16 -Â Everyone has weaker subjects - does your character experience ridicule for their struggles, internally or externally? What areas do they struggle most in?
Week 6
[ May 17 Â - Â May 23 ]
For this week, weâre going to take a look at the relationships that impacted and molded our character into who they are today!
May 17 -Â Who comes to mind first when your character is asked who is most important to them? Why does that person stand out so much?
May 18 -Â Discuss someone who brought out the darkest sides of your character and how those feelings impact your character now.
May 19 -Â Discuss someone who changed, influenced, or significantly impacted your characters views on religion, karma & luck.
May 20 -Â Discuss someone who changed, influenced, or significantly impacted your characterâs views on justice & vigilantism.
May 21 - Who comes to mind first when asked who shaped your character? This person doesnât have to be the most important to them, so much as someone who molded their perspectives in some way - be it a teacher, a family member, a lover or even an enemy.Â
May 22 - Who does your character rely on the most? Are there others they could rely on? If so, why is that the person ( or people ) they go to?Â
May 23 - Who challenges your character the most? Who makes them take on difficulties and forces them to grow most often? Are they friends or rivals - a bit of both, or neither?Â
Week 7
[ May 24 Â - Â May 31 ]
This weekâs theme is wishes and dreams, which is an opportunity for muns to stick bait on a hook and fling it onto the dash for some more fun interactions!Â
May 24 - A character you would most like to have yours interact with, and three ideas for start up interactions.
May 25 - 3 to 5 songs that you would love to build a thread around in some way, be it inspired by the vibes or the lyrics.
May 26 - Due to a series of unfortunate events, your character is stuck on an island with (1) other person. Who do you think would be the most challenging and entertaining for your character to be stuck with? Feel free to list multiple options!
May 27 -Â Make a list of 5 - 10 sentences guaranteed to get a visceral response from your character and invite your followers to send them in. Â
May 28 - That very particular idea that you donât know if anyone is interested in? Todayâs the day youâre going to post it. Yes, that idea. Even if youâre not sure how to formulate it into something concrete - post it as a poem, a drabble, a stream of consciousness - do it for the catharsis of breathing life into it, however brief. Who knows, maybe youâll get a bite!Â
May 29 -Â 3 to 5 obscure / rare characters you would like to see and maybe a bit on why you think they would be interesting - a little blurb that might inspire another to pick them up!
May 30 - 3 to 5 genres, aesthetics or concepts that you would love to explore with your character. Make them as big or as contained as you like - remember, this is bait, so make it juicy!Â
May 31 -Â Tag 5 people â Iâm kidding. Take today off for self care, or post how your character self cares and pat yourself on the back for even reading this far! And absolutely treat yourself if you did even one of these <3 I hope this was at least a little fun for folks!

The Great Prank War
{Credit to @emovirgil-sanders for the idea}
In which Virgil and Roman start a prank war and chaos ensues.
/ / / / / / / / / / / /
The whole thing had started out as an accident honestly.
It was early in the morning. Too early for either Roman or Virgil to be awake in their opinions. But never the less they were both stumbling around the kitchen in a sleepy daze, each going about making their own hot beverage they hoped would help them feel less like death.
Virgil had groaned out a quiet 'pass the sugar' to which Roman lazily lifted the container down from the self and slid it over to his roommate and childhood friend as he stared down at the steaping cup of herbal tea in front of him.
The sound of a spoon clinking against the side of a ceramic mug was soon followed by the sound of Virgil spitting put his coffee in surprise and shock. The sudden noise caused the more theatrical of the two to snap his head up in concern.
"The fuck?" Virgil muttered, now mostly shaken out of his tired state. First he checked the coffee jar to make sure it was still in date, which it was.
Roman watched him with confusion and looked down at the same time as Virgil to the container Roman had handed him. Instead of seeing the usual sugar shaker that appeared at least twice each morning, sitting beside the mug was the shaker of salt.
The two friends realised three things in this moment.
1) putting the salt and sugar on the same shelf had in fact been a bad idea as Virgil had stated when they first set it all up.
2) salt really did not work in coffee.
3) vengeance will have to be had.
Roman spent the next few days constantly on his toes, looking over his shoulder and jumping at every unfamiliar noise. He felt he was acting rather like his anxious friend, who in all earnest was basically a brother to him. He would constantly keep an eye on him when they were in their home together.
Then, one day when he was getting up to get ready for work he couldn't find any of his shoes (which was odd considering he had so many pairs). He started to panic, wondering what on earth the emo nightmare could have done with them.
He tabled out his room, sliding down the hall with his socks and practically leaping down the stairs to a smirking Virgil on the kitchen doorway, holding a steaming cup of coffee between the sleeves of his oversized hoodie.
"Mornin'." Roman looked around before turing his gaze back to the slightly shorter male.
"Where are they?" He demanded. Virgil gave a small shrug and a sip of his coffee.
"Whatever do you mean Roman?" Safe to say he was not amused by this.
"The shoes. All of them. Where?"
"How would I know?" Virgil turned his gaze to the window on their front door. "Lovely day for tree climbing isn't it?"
Roman's eyes widened in quick realisation and he sprinted to the door, throwing it open then taking a step back in shock as he saw the tree at the bottom of their lawn that was now littered with shoes. HIS shoes.
Virgil slowly made his way to beside Roman.
"Huh, I guess shoes do grow on trees. Weird." He patted Romans shoulder and turned away, heading back into the kitchen to finish off his coffee. "Have fun with that sir sing-a-lot." Roman grumbled but made his way down the garden to start retrieving his shoes.
It was only a few days later the Virgil awoke to his entire floor covered in brightly coloured legos and his walls plastered with neon post-it notes. Then a harsh knock on his already open door.
"Good morning! Dear me, seems you have a bit of a situation there."
"Roman..." Virgil hissed lowly, sitting up in his bed and sending a glare towards his roommate.
"Oh well, good luck with that." And just like that he was casually making his way out to work.
"Roman!" Virgil tried calling after him, tired and agitated. After no response he groaned and mumbled curses to himself as he tried to navigate the death trap of legos.
It was a day later, when Roman was getting back from a shopping run that the next prank hit.
A failed sense of security had settled over him, expect it to have taken a couple of days for something to happen. Virgil took full advantage of this.
At first nothing really seemed off, but then Roman noticed an odd hissing. Being the 'brave' one out of him and Virgil he decided it was his duty to investigate. When he followed the sound he realised it was coming from the bathroom.
He cautiously opened the door and almost feel, letting out a high pitched screem, when he was greeted with a bowa constrictor slithering around his bathroom floor and over the towel rack.
"Begone, you nave! Foul tresspassor! This is not your land!" Roman yelled while waving around a towel in the direction of the snake.
After a few moments of watching him flailing around Virgil emerged from his room laughing and picked up the snake calmly.
"Glad to see you an Ethan are well acquainted now." He hummed before heading back to his room a shutting the door, leaving a flustered Roman behind.
Romans next prank didn't exactly go to plan. The idea was to post up pictures of himself on every possible surface that Virgil would see for long periods of time. He had done this successfully, until Virgil had countered by putting the world's worst collection of moustaches on every single one. He might have been less offended had Virgil of not put in the extra effort to make his moustache art look spectacularly like it was done by a five year old high on sugar and juice.
This war went on, back a fourth between the two for months, driving everyone one around them insane. At one point Roman managed to get a group of his co-workers to dress up like him and he brought them home. Virgil was sufficiently freaked out when he walked in to find six different versions of his roommate scattered around his home, but easily turned the tables by getting them all to pie Roman in the face the next day at work during different times (which led to four total outfit changes for the princely man that day). After that, everyone unofficially agreed to not get involved.
Neither man seemed to ever run put of new ideas for a good hearted prank they could play, although ocassionaly they would take an old one and do it in a different way. Like when Roman plastered sheets of the lyrics to every disney song ever around every single iteam Virgil owned. Then a few pranks down the line did the same thing but with sickeningly over-positive motivational quotes.
It was a battle hard fought on both sides. There was balloons, cream, lamp shades, plants and yes, even syrup. Oh the syrup. Days of scrubbing and it still lingered in remnants everywhere.
It was only after Logan and Patton stepped in that the war between the two stopped. They now had a common enemy. And thus started the "Great Prank War: the sequel".

Thatcher/Lesion oneshot in which Lesion has a tattoo and Thatcher hates it. (Rating T, fierce denial and fluff I suppose, ~2.5k words) - dedicated to @glazkov-smileâ who put this ship into my brain where it now festers and grows shakes fist
.
The first time Thatcher catches a glimpse of it, all he feels â curiously enough â is betrayal.
No part of it makes sense, itâs neither his body nor his decision and yet itâs as if heâs been deceived in some way, left in the dark about a topic concerning him personally. Itâs irrelevant how nonsensical his emotions are because theyâre there regardless and no amount of logical arguing with himself is able to make them vanish. He canât rationalise it even if he tries, and he tries desperately. Heâs merely being a judgemental old fart, probably, something heâs been called before in differing contexts. But he doesnât know how to deal with it.
It was no longer than a second: Bandit pulled on the back of Lesionâs collar to drop an ice cube into his shirt, and Thatcher just happened to look over at the commotion and saw colour lick at the back of Lesionâs neck, usually hidden by whatever garish shirt the man inexplicably chose to wear that day but now revealed in a flash of ink. And itâs enough to conjure up a profound disappointment in Thatcher.
Theyâve known each other for years now, stayed in contact where Smoke exchanged irregular messages which taper off now and then, only to rekindle once in a blue moon. No, Thatcher and Lesion wrote and called almost every week, given their work permitted it, left messages on a variety of media depending on their current location and sent each other postcards even, both of them carefully and happily maintaining an unlikely friendship. They differ in many regards though not the most important ones, and thus remained pointed towards each other like magnets. Friendships like this one are rare, Thatcher has come to understand this all too keenly.
And he canât stand tattoos.
To him, theyâre much worse than gaudy jewellery, flamboyant clothes and unnaturally dyed hair together â not only are they alarmingly permanent but also usually horribly tacky. Who cares if someone managed to father a child? Congratulations, they fulfilled their purpose the way nature intended, no need to plaster their kidâs heartbeat or birth date or entire bloody face all over their arms and legs and basically rub it under everyoneâs nose. He doesnât care to know the names of peopleâs partners nor is he interested in cringy quotes or supposedly deep and symbolic bullshit which allegedly holds so much meaning for its bearer. Theyâre ugly. They mar skin instead of decorating it.
He much prefers freckles, scars, stretch marks, hair, natural discolouration, any sort of blemish which tells him this person is alive and breathing and not airbrushed or genetically engineered to look this way. He doesnât care tattoos have been around forever, to him theyâre a disgrace and can erase all his interest in someone. Can, and have.
Thinking back, heâs fairly sure he ranted about this to Lesionâs face before, was met with the usual calm patience tinged with amusement whenever he complains about something at length, earned no more than a half-reply implying his position was at best a bit too extreme and at worst complete and utter dogshite in Lesionâs opinion. Heâs never dismissive about it, merely pokes fun but ultimately chooses to respect Thatcherâs views which is probably one of the reasons why theyâre still friends.
So when he catches sight of precise strokes lining Lesionâs back, Thatcher is appalled. Indignant. Offended, even.
He needs to see it.
Just like he demands details about all the unnecessary so-called âappsâ most people around him use so he can judge them accordingly, curiosity grips him in its iron hold and compels him to view the entire disaster Lesion immortalised on his body for reasons unknown. Maybe itâs linked to a previous partner, a family member, a time in Lesionâs life about which Thatcher knows nothing yet, something deeply personal â in which case heâll still disapprove of the ink but possibly gain more insight into his friendâs past. In that case, itâd be a worthwhile endeavour despite the knowledge of what exactly is tainting Lesionâs skin. He wonât be able to unsee it afterwards.
.
âDo you want to fight?â, he interrupts Lesionâs current conversation and gets a good-natured laugh from his friend and a concerned look from Ying in return.
âI thought we agreed not to argue politics in the workplace anymoreâ, Lesion replies cheerfully and moves his toothpick from one corner of his mouth to the other, Thatcherâs gaze following its journey momentarily.
âYou said you were a little rusty in whatever fancy martial arts style you always torture the recruits with, so I thought you could use a refresher.â
âItâs much too warm to fightâ, Ying points out and Thatcher barely bites back a response along the lines of thatâs the point.
Lesion ignores her statement and leans back in his lawn chair, one of Rainbowâs most sought after commodity in summer â ants are prevalent and therefore sitting in the grass ill-advised. âEven if I did, Iâd go to Yumiko and not you â no offence.â
âI bet youâve been doing it for longer than she has.â
âPossibly, but sheâs still lengths better.â The younger man raises an amused eyebrow. âMike, are you bored?â
Oh. Itâs the perfect excuse, his entire team is known for their eccentric solutions to boredom as well as striking fear into everyoneâs heart as soon as it looks like theyâve got nothing to do. âYesâ, he lies smoothly, âso you can either join me willingly or spend the rest of the day anticipating a non-consensual fight. Iâll know when you least expect it, Tze Long.â
âSounds like you donât have a choice at allâ, Ying sighs, shaking her head. âMen.â
âDonât pretend you wouldnât jump on the opportunity to roll through the mud with Elena, my dearâ, Lesion comments casually after which neither of the two stick around for long enough to watch her turn crimson and splutter at the accusation. âSo, tell me. Was this a misguided rescue mission or do you need my help with anything embarrassing?â
Thatcher blinks at the unexpected question until he realises his excuse sounds so terribly flimsy Lesion didnât buy it for a second, correctly assuming an ulterior motive. Even if heâs nowhere near guessing it. âOh, neither. I really just â it was a genuine suggestion and IâŚâ He trails off when crinkles appear around dark eyes.
âArenât we a little too old to kill time by beating each other up? Letâs go drink some green tea to cool down instead, shall we?â
His objection dies on his tongue as his friend turns away, wearing a small smile. âI donât even like green teaâ, Thatcher protests quietly yet trails after Lesion nonetheless.
.
âLetâs go swimming.â
Lesion pauses visibly, marks his spot on the page heâs currently on and then glances up sceptically. âNow?â
Yes, Thatcher almost blurts out but catches himself just in time, checks his watch and pretends like he didnât completely lose track of the hours ticking by purely because of Lesionâs presence. Itâs a common occurrence, oddly enough. âOf course notâ, he scoffs, âbut what about tomorrow?â
âWhere is this coming from? Weâve never gone for a swim together, you prefer going alone.â Fortunately, thereâs no suspicion in his voice, only curiosity.
âI just thought you might want to join me. Whenâs the last time you went swimming?â
âYesterday. Meghan invited me.â
Ah. Thatcher squints before he can help himself â they probably spent the time showing off their respective tattoos, and for some reason this thought makes it worse than as if Lesion had gone with anyone else. Even Blackbeard. âWell. If you donât want to, thatâs fineâ, he concludes curtly and directs his attention back to the book in his own lap, fighting down another wave of dismay. So others are allowed to see it, apparently, where heâd not even been aware of it at all.
âWhat? Of course we can go, I was just surprised -â
âNah. Nevermind.â
âMike.â Thereâs gentle exasperation in Lesionâs voice now and he leans forward in the armchair which has become basically his over the course of several months â it bears his imprint and smells of him. Not that Thatcher would know. âI didnât say no.â
âIâm busy tomorrow anywayâ, he lies through his teeth and wonders whether he sounds cranky.
Lesion silently examines him for a few seconds longer, expression unreadable, and finally shrugs. âAlright. If you do want to go, just let me know.â
.
The doors of his wardrobe have mirrors. Itâs the perfect plan. Thatcher buys the Dutch beer Lesion likes so much, and while Maestro is in the middle of listing all the exotic animals heâs eaten in his life with Smoke listening intently (and probably adding quite a few to his bucket list), while Mute snitches on Banditâs newest plan to Sledge, while Sledge pointedly ignores Maestroâs hand slowly creeping up his thigh â while all of them are gathered in Thatcherâs living room, he makes sure to spill some of it down Lesionâs back.
âWhoopsâ, he says after his friend has jumped up with an undignified noise of surprise and hopes dearly that either none of the others watched him very deliberately tip his bottle or that they at least know to keep their mouths shut. âCome on, letâs get you something else to wear.â
âWhy did we even stay in if I end up smelling like pub anywayâ, Lesion complains weakly on the way to the bedroom, lamenting the wasted drink and accepting the fresh t-shirt Thatcher presses into his hands. âThanks. You can go ahead.â
Thatcher pauses, hovering uncertainly. This â isnât how itâs supposed to go. The last time, Lesion undressed in front of him without any qualms and he hoped it would be the same now, positioned his friend between himself and the mirrors so heâd get a good look no matter what. âI, uh -â
âDo you want to watch me change?â, Lesion asks, audibly entertained.
âNo, I just â you probably need a towel, right? To get rid of the beer.â
âSureâ, the younger man agrees easily and Thatcher nods more to himself than for his benefit, leaves the room and dashes as soon as heâs out of eyesight. Heâs never fetched a wet towel faster in his life, hoping to at least see part of it if Lesionâs in the middle of undressing, yet when he returns, Lesion is still wearing his soaked shirt. As well as a meaningful smirk. âThank you, Mike. Iâve got it from here.â
No, heâs not going to let this opportunity pass. âAre you sure you donât need help with your back?â
âDo you want to see it that badly?â
Oh.
âI have no idea what you mean.â
âYour personal vendetta against my shirts. It took me a few days to realise why so many of them ended up ruined, stained, ripped or threatened. Youâve not seen it before, have you?â
He hasnât been that obvious. Has he? Thatcher considers denying everything but his curiosity prevails, triumphs over the prospect of never living this down. Defeated, he shakes his head, prepares for the inevitable ribbing yet is merely awarded with Lesionâs fingers reaching up to unbutton his soiled shirt, a gesture so hypnotising all speech evades him.
âI didnât know you were that interestedâ, Lesion comments nonchalantly as if the temperature in the room hadnât just jumped up a few degrees â or maybe Thatcher is experiencing a heatwave, yet whatever it is, his face is burning.
âIâm notâ, he replies petulantly and is in the middle of justifying all his actions to himself in his head when the piece of fabric drops, carelessly gets discarded, and then Lesion turns.
Itâs -
Well, itâs large, first of all, covering the entirety of his back and seemingly continuing even below the waistband of his trousers, just shy of curling all the way around his ribs. The ink is vibrant and mesmerising, no part of Lesionâs natural skin colour visible between all the vivid colours crassly at odds with everything Thatcher considers desirable. To him, it looks more like a yakuza tattoo than anything else, the motif of a roaring tiger familiar yet kept in a more tasteful style, no cartoonish bulging eyes or exaggerated features. Part of it is shiny with moisture, making it look even more recent and amplifying the otherworldly feel of it.
And itâs still a tattoo, even if the fact that itâs Lesionâs back changes something about it; even if the outline of his shoulder blades, the dip of his lower back, the gently curved spine do something to Thatcher, its nature remains intact. He doesnât know why anyone would choose to deface their natural beauty like this, would spend a horrendous amount of money on something this hideous, would endure a million needle pricks only to look like this.
He also has no idea why he canât stop staring.
A detail catches his attention and, without thinking, he lifts his hand and brushes over the tigerâs face with a thumb, the skin warm and slightly sticky. âHeâs got a scar below his eyeâ, Thatcher murmurs and fights hard to keep this odd, uncalled-for reverent tone out of his voice.
âDo you want to watch him dance?â, Lesion asks him quietly and his brain is too occupied to process his words, discern the meaning behind them because â surely, heâs not -
The air is thick around them and itâs not only a byproduct of the season; itâs not stuffy yet heavy nonetheless, struggles against Thatcherâs deep inhale. His other fingers join his thumb in resting on intricate swirls, scared to move in case they smudge the ornate ink. âWhat do you mean?â, he hears himself mumble, possibly hoping for a repetition only, not even a clarification.
âOh. Nevermind.â Lesionâs reply is soft and it sounds like heâs grinning. âIâm glad you seem to like it though.â
âI donâtâ, Thatcher protests immediately and withdraws his hand, suddenly light-headed with the rush of oxygen, air flooding his lungs, returned to normal from one second to the next.
His friend throws him a look over his shoulder and he really looks like the Cheshire cat for some reason, as if heâs having the time of his life and Thatcher feels like he missed something somewhere along the way. âAlrightâ, Lesion agrees readily.
They get him cleaned up and into Thatcherâs shirt without any more interruptions, but when he turns to leave, the Brit holds him back yet falters at the expectant, amused and open smile with which the gesture is met.
âHow aboutâ, he begins, suddenly sheepish, âwe go swimming this weekend?â
And to his relief, Lesion nods immediately, grinning and extremely pleased with the suggestion. âOf course. Iâd love to.â

I was tagged by @helianthus-heart and @the-baking-yogini (WILL ADD COMPLIMENTS FOR FRIENDS BEFORE PUBLISHING)
Whatâs your favorite song(s) to sing/hum? Whatever the last catchy song I listened to is...Or Mary Poppins...Or Hymns...generally bad hymns. (And now The Phantom of the Opera. Thanks @the-baking-yogini lol)
What are your favorite flower/tree/plant (all 3 or whatever you have an answer to). This is hard...Probably...Carnation/Red Oak/MINT
Favorite colors? Stubbornly Iâd say green, but it in all honesty, probably blue because itâs Mother Maryâs color. (I have 2 green shirts and the rest are blue. like, all of them)
What do you always doodle? I used to just draw random original characters for a high fantasy saga I wanted to write...or Megaman knock offs XD I havenât really drawn since high school..
How do you take your coffee/tea? Coffee with 2 creams per cup and enough sugar for me to forget my sorrows. As. Strong. As. It. Can. Be. Made. Like 16oz of espresso *thumbs up* Tea with honey!!! and a little bit of milk if it wonât curdle
Favorite candle scent? Warm towels! The ocean!
Sunrise or sunset: Sunrise. Before the craziness of the day starts...just sit outside. The smell. Ugh. It may be my favorite smell. Just sip on a cup of coffee and pray a rosary. Listen to the birds. What else could you need? (By the beach in Cape May is perfect too..)
What perfume do you wear if any? âI wear axeâ
Whatâs your go to dance move when youâre alone? I just....kinda wiggle. I canât dance. Someone come waltz.
Favorite Quote?:  âPray, hope, and donât worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.â -Saint Padre Pio âIf I am not in Godâs grace, may God put me there, and if I am, may God so keep me there.â -Saint Joan of Arc (anything she said is beautiful, motivational, and inspiring...just ask Mark Twain!)
Favorite self care thing or routine? Laying in bed after stretching, and reading a silly book. Forgetting the world and worries for a bit and ignoring my chronic pain. Listening to music in the car after a long day. So many good ways.
What color are your eyes? Â Blue?? Green??? I donât really know tbh..
What is your favorite eye color on others? Green? Hazel? Blue? Honestly, all eye colors can be beautiful.. Rock whatcha got!
Favorite season?  Why? I used to say winter for the snow...or fall for the smell...and I might say Spring now because I donât need a coat...but warm summer nights. Man. How can you beat that?
Cheek, neck, or nose kisses? I love kissing people on the nose....they always make adorable faces >.< But all kisses are appreciated if theyâre from the right person ;)
What does your happy place look like? Sleeping on the porch of a small farm house under a full moon with some of my closest friends, listening to the even breathing, the chirp of crickets, and the occasional scurry of a kitten across the stones not 10 feet away...Couldnât be happier than there with the people who made a house home. (Honorable mentions: in silence before our Lord in adoration; playing a board game with friends; anywhere that I can truly be myself and be at peace)
Favorite breed of dog? Irish Wolfhound! Theyâre big, and Irish, and cute. Iâm also a sucker for Huskies, Retrievers, Labs....honestly any decent size puppy.
Do you ever want to be married?  If so, what colors would you pick for your wedding theme? I hope so!! But I am still discerning...weâll see what God has planned for me! And whatever my future spouse and I would decide on together.
Favorite weather: Gentle snow....so peaceful. Thunderstorms and blizzards are lovely too. Anything that reminds me of the peace or power of God.
