Reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and honestly I could cry. I know it gets hate because people don't like sympathising with the villain-- particularly the villain who ends up killing a shitton of people but- I mean- for one, Coryo isn't President Snow. Not yet. So there's that-- and for two.. it could be my Cluster B, it could be my bleeding heart, or maybe it's the psych major talking but watching Coryo's descent into villainy, his inner thoughts, but moreso the moments of genuine goodness and love that he has- oh, he's so human. He could be me. He could be a lot of us, really, more than most want to admit.
Reading this book and thinking oh sweetheart. oh child. you knew better. Hats off Suzanne, you have my heart.
(if you come on here to shit on people with NPD / other personality disorders / mental illnesses you will be blocked on sight btw)

tboss (jul/20)

Lucy sings and dips…
Snow: where did she learn to do that?
Y/N: well she was practicing that move with me last night
Snow: you’re a choreographer?
Y/N: no she was practicing that in our-
Lucy: baby!
Y/N: sorry my songbird
Lucy: come on baby, let’s go do some more practicing in my dressing room (winks)
Lucy grabs Y/N’s hand and drags them off

What I find the most appaling is, not only an overwhelming majority of people have literally ONLY positive things to say about SOTR, but the fact that they don't elaborate on it further. All the positive reviews are filled with things like "it made me cry", "heartbreaking", "i'm traumatised", "I'm gonna need therapy after this", "destroyed me", "foaming at the mouth", "this book wrecked me", etc. I rarely came across a review or reaction, which has at least a few words on the actual quality of the book.
All most people seem to care about while making a judgement on the book's worth and quality, is how emotional it made them feel, how many of their old favourite characters returned, how much lore dump they got. They don't even consider quality of writing, or looking at it from a critical angle.
I have no problem with people loving the book even though I hated it. Everyone has the right to love a flawed piece of work. It is the lack of thought behind the emotions, and the refusal to acknowledge and analyse any flaws, that shocks me. No one seems to focus on the book itself — was the story well written?, was the plot well executed?, were the characters and themes properly developed in the narrative?, was the actual writing of a good quality? None of these questions are given any thought.
I've been through Instagram, Youtube, and Pinterest, and I've been attacked by posts talking about how perfect and flawless it is. Maybe it's because I'm a critical reader, and believes that no book or writer should be above criticism, but I find the lack of a different perspective strange and fairly a bit shocking. When Mockingjay (my favourite in the series) and TBOSS (which I liked, but not as much as the og books) were coming out, they were many mixed reviews, that were critical, and explained why they felt so. But not with SOTR, oh no, SOTR is above criticism, it's all "you fell for the capitol propaganda", or "you didn't get it".
I'm genuinely curious to know why lots of people loved it, to gain an understanding of both perspectives, but most of these reviewers seems to have anything of substance to say.
That's the part that upsets me. The people who criticise this book are often put in the spotlight as if they have said one of the most problematic things, or are just being told they are wrong or even that we should stop posting, and yet our points are not disputes.
No one is telling us what made this book great on a literary level, or exactly what part of the writing was good. No one is opening up a debate to tell us why the execution of SOTR actually works well with the themes, or why the characterisations are well done.
No. We are just told we are wrong, this book is great and we fell for Capitol propaganda. Or bombarded with quotes that were written to be reposted on social media stripped of their content.
I also don't see any problem with people liking this book, but what I do see a problem with is that anytime someone criticises this book they are shut down without a proper argument AND have to deal with people posting screenshots on other social media.
Clearly, they did a poor job of understanding the theme of the book.

I don't care what anyone says (and this is no way a hate thing to Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson) but everyone in district 12 should've had an an accent!!! Actually, every district should've had an accent, not just the capitol. And before you think this is because if Lucy Gray, it's not.
A lot of the Hunger Games fandom agrees that Panem has been around for at least a century before the Dark Days. And that most likely means that the district system has been around for long time. So, with minimal outside interaction because if district isolation, every district would developed their own words, their own ways of saying things which is how you get an accent! Accents are regional linguistic differences.
Also, if we think about the Hunger Games as dystopian to our current world, that would most likely mean that the USA would have existed long enough for the regional accents to form. (My personal theory is that Panem was formed in mainland North America after the end of WW1, based mostly on timeline and technology stuff.) And based on pictures from TBOSS, we can see that district 10 is Florida, district 11 and 8 are Georgia and district 12 is South Carolina. I know this isn't exactly accurate, but this is the closest North American country map to this one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, in theory, with district isolation and the fact that the USA would've been around long enough to form regional accents, Katniss and everyone from district 12 should've had a weirdly aged and isolated South Carolinian accent.
Other people have done better explanations, but this is the best I can do with my research.

if disney went with the star boy x asha idea, considering tboss and wish were in the cinemas around the same time, we could have had two couples which are fair skinned blond twink boy x powerful dark skinned girl, one toxic, one healthy, and i think that's such a missed opportunity
