Took off on my cycle one early morning to shoot with the film. Sameer Kulavoor has documented our deep interest with tarpaulin with great eye, and it's hard to miss our streets filled with it. It canopies the lives of street vendors and every morning you see them uncovering what's hidden under it. There is plenty of auto junk too interspersing the coloured tarpaulins. My film got exhausted with the shot of the broken van with foliage growing next to it. I wasn't sure if anything will come on the film because of light leak, but apart from four spoiled shots, rest came neatly. Nothing beats the colour you get on film. Makes you enjoy shooting in colour. Developed and scanned by The Film Foto Store, Bangalore.

When Mud Stoves and Tarpaulin Tents Meet Modernization and Aristocracy
The Meat Distribution Drive - 2017
“The slum is the measure of civilization” - Jacob August Riis
Just as there are two sides to a coin, a city such as Bangalore, on the one hand, has its claim to urbanity and development, and its dirty secret on the other. The sort of secret that everybody knows of but never talks about – the slums. The Project Smile team and its entourage of volunteers have been reminded of this ugly reality for almost a month now. The weekend Meat distribution drive that took place on the 17th and 18th of June was more than anything else, a constant reminder for the Project Smile team that is familiar with its terrain, of the grueling state of the slums.
One can safely admit that although the volunteers could vouch for the familiarity of it all, what with the experience of several drives of weeks gone by, nothing could prepare them for the kind of conditions and circumstances that the pockets of families had to relate to them.
The volunteers gathered at the distribution center at precisely 8 a.m. and thus began the packaging of hundreds of kits with the customary procedure that the team is accustomed to. The kits contained meat, an assortment of vegetables, fruits, spices and some greens - all of which would provide a nourishing meal for a couple of days at most.
11 a.m. saw all the designated teams dispersing to their allotted areas, the first of which moved all the volunteers close to tears. This particular cluster of families lived far off from the usual, small but dilapidated brick layered houses that at least had puny lanes, shared washrooms and some sort of water system. Tarpaulin tents held together by a few poles with absolutely no room or division for a kitchen, or even a washroom was the distinct feature of these TENTS that the volunteers came across. These shelters were incapable of protecting the occupants neither from the winds, the harsh rain or any sort of nasty weather. The nights were spent without electricity and the dense foliage surrounding the tents served as restrooms. The families which were almost always large in number cooked their meals with a mud stove they built using the clay and dirt from outside of their shelters. One would assume that living in such deplorable surroundings and circumstances would leave these people in a constant state of misery. But it was with much consternation the volunteers realized that such was not the case. The beneficiaries welcomed the teams with resigned contentment and gratification.
The volunteers were overwhelmed to find the extent of unadulterated joy and pleasure the beneficiaries received the kits with. It would seem that it was a rare occurrence for them to first have visitors ready to listen to their woes and bring something for them no less. Yusuf, who is currently pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering says, “I was in a conversation with one of the beneficiaries, an old man, who broke down when I inquired about his state of affairs. It seemed like he just needed someone to talk to and listen to his woes.”
Naseema, one of the beneficiaries whom the volunteers seemed fortunate enough to visit, only had thankful words to speak of her state. Just like the other shelters, hers was sparsely furnished - with just a few blankets and utensils. She seemed too young, emaciated and drained to be doing anything. She had five children with one along the way and her husband earned too little to be able to take care of the family in a comfortable way. It was distressing to find that none of the little children could afford to go to school but that seemed to be the least of their problems as we soon found out. While the team tried to engage her in conversation they found that she was cooking a meal with just one food article available in the house – a handful of rice.
The teams visited many a household but nothing could trump the miserable conditions of the slums populated by tents. By the end of day 2, much was accomplished and many a smiles spared for those who required it the most.
Yusuf further adds, “A majority of the kids I saw were barefooted. There was a lot of dirt, animals and excreta around and they were living amongst it all. What I found intriguing was that even the smallest of things that we would consider insignificant, like the shavings of ice we used to store the meat in for example, was a fascinating thing for these kids. They played with it and threw it at each other and they were so happy!
One thing is to give money and another is to spend your time with these people. Because experiencing something at first hand is quite different, your perception about it changes. I would encourage people to come forward and spend their time, energy and resources to help these families and share some of the joys that the likes of us are so often used to.”
As the month of mercy is almost coming to a close, there is much to look forward to as the next weekend would be a culmination of all that has passed and all that one can anticipate in the future as the volunteers are already on their heels, organizing and prepping up for the Eid Distribution Drive.

Tickets from Bangalore to New Delhi - Checked!!
Luggage - Checked!!
Accommodation - Where?
Journey from New Delhi to Leh - When?
Itinerary - Will figure it out!!
Eatables, Medicines, Extra Warm clothes - Will buy them en route!!
This was how we began our trip to Ladakh. Read a few blogs online, spoke to friends who had already visited but didn't plan anything. We wanted it to be as close as possible to a hitchhike.
While de-boarding the plane at New Delhi, we were fortunate enough to click a picture of one Lama and a Mr.Bean lookalike. Now definitely the journey would be more lively.
The iconic Delhi metro was our next mode of transport and is also my favourite mode of transportation in Delhi. Forever,I am in awe with its massive connectivity and incredible efficiency.
Then travelled to Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminus at Kashmere Gate in Delhi. Went to the ticket counter to receive the information that we will have to book tickets from Delhi to Manali only and then the onward journey at Manali. Although, there were a lot of buses travelling to Manali, we decided to board the one that would take us till Leh. Booked the tickets and walked unto the station where the bus was residing. One look at the bus and we could envision our next 41hrs of our lives.
The bus journey began late in the afternoon and by the time we reached the hills,it was pitch dark outside. A small amateurish video below will give an idea about the dhoomkas and the jhumkas in the bus.
youtube
As the morning arrived, so did the beautiful scenes that we were waiting to lie our eyes upon and that took away a lot of our tiredness. We felt refreshed, took a small break at Manali bus stand and then began our journey back in the same bus to Leh. Another twist to our journey schedule was awaiting us.
The bus had an overnight halt at Keylong (just after crossing Rohtang Pass) where we had to book our accommodations for one night. 25hrs journey was completed and our bodies had got used to the sudden movements and jerks of the bus. When we de-boarded, we could feel the decrease in temperature and were desperate to find a decent bed to sleep.
Although many locals invited us to try out the accommodation at their hotels or at their references, we politely declined them because we had one vital parameter - ‘access to wifi’ and that narrowed down the possibilities. Luckily not too far away from the bus stand, we booked a room in Hotel Nordaling and experienced the hospitality of some extremely hospitable owners. Freshened up, ate some good meals and put our bodies to rest for them to experience the most challenging journey ahead. Below picture shows the view from our room just a few hours before sunset.
The scenery on the route was that of beautiful barren land. The jerks inside the bus increased as the tar road paved way to stones. We could see bikers, SUV Cars, trucks and some extremely adventurous cyclists moving along side us. As the width of the road was too small,we then realised the meek possibility of a larger bus moving on the same route.
Due to the sudden drop in oxygen levels and our lack of preparation for this, Praveen felt an acute headache and passed out in the beginning of the journey from Keylong to Leh.
youtube
The route was dangerous, untidy and required a lot of perseverance to cover it. We could not see any form of living being whether a plant or an animal, just rocks and rocks and more rocks. But we see vehicles tumbled down the road and their dead chassis uncleared because of the undue risk involved for the army.
Upon all of this, none of our mobile phone signals worked except the satellite connection of Tata Sky. This both frustrated and made me wonder about the limitations of technology.
Finally, after ages the bus stopped for refreshments(in the middle of nowhere) where there were eco toilets built with tarpaulins. Ate a bit to keep myself going but began to feel the affects of less oxygen in the air with some heavy breathing and light headache.
Was able to capture some good pictures before collapsing like my friend. It was interesting to experience a huge traffic jam enroute our journey over a small bridge, which eventually resulted in us reaching Leh by 5hrs later than the scheduled arrival time. The fascinating part was the manual extension of the width of the bridge just to ensure that our bus moved smoothly on it.
youtube
Both of us woke up when we reached Leh late in the night with hammer and tongs banging our heads from within. Luckily, we were picked up from the bus stand by the owners of the guest house and then we retired ourselves to our rooms at Gotal Guest House. We literally crashed ourselves on the bed, not to get up for the next 2 days.
A special mention to this wonderful gentleman we met on the bus - Mr.Paras Jain who is a businessman from MP and was travelling alone to explore various parts of North India at the age of 60. He had a commendable stamina, much better than both of us and was able to withstand the mountain sickness and get over it in just a few hours. The below picture was of us after recovery i.e. after 2 days on reaching Leh.
