Book Launch: "Kwame Brathwaite: Black Is Beautiful"
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Harlem USA May 14, 2019
An SRO full house came out for the New York City book launch and signing of Kwame Brathwaite's Black Is Beautiful (Aperture), featuring the photography that helped popularize the slogan “Black Is Beautiful.” The book is available ($40) at the Schomburg gift shop and online.
Brathwaite Sr.and his older brother, Elombe Brath, in the late 50's and early 60’s, did their part to spread this idea through Brathwaite’s writings and photographs, as well as the activities of the two organizations they helped co-found: AJASS (1956) and the Grandassa Models (1962). Grandassa Models was founded to challenge white beauty standards. This monograph — the first ever dedicated to Brathwaite’s remarkable career—tells the story of a key, but under-recognized, figure of the second Harlem Renaissance.
The launch event featured a conversation with Kwame S. Brathwaite (Jr.), Archive Director; Tanisha C. Ford, author and historian; former Grandassa Model Eunice Townsend; and was moderated by Kimberly R. Drew, art curator, writer and social activist. Many of Harlem's well-known photographers came out for the event, and took many photos of each other. One iconic photographer did not bring his camera, because of the rain. Bad call.
Attendees were encouraged to recreate looks and hair styles that pay homage to the "Naturally" fashion shows and cultural celebrations that are also reverberating in the current vernacular of Black style and culture. A fair number did.

Why Is the Wine Industry Ignoring Black Americans’ $1.2 Trillion Buying Power?
When I’ve had a particularly stressful day or I want something to pair with a rather decadent meal I’ve cooked, I reach for a bottle of wine. My preference tends toward drier white wines, but I’ll admit it hasn’t always been this way.
My first alcoholic beverages were spirits in college. Cheap vodka in plastic bottles, flavored rums, and the occasional gin that tasted like gasoline lit on fire. It wasn’t until my mid-20s that I started learning more about wines and enjoying them regularly. So much so that, to celebrate my 25th birthday, I hosted a wine tasting at a local wine store with a variety of Tuscan wines.
What I’ve noticed through the years, whether I’m having a glass of wine solo at a bar or trying out a new restaurant as a treat, is as a black woman there are expectations about the type of wine I should be drinking — or that I will enjoy drinking wine at all.
You see, apparently, black people know very little about wine. It’s a novelty for us, and when we do drink it, the sweeter the better.
Certain spirits brands have successfully recognized the buying power of black Americans, but very few wine labels do. “People aren’t talking to us, period,” says wine educator and consultant Tanisha Townsend.
Cameron Glover muses about this exact topic in a piece she penned, “Drinking While Black.” “I typically prefer Moscato, a sweet, fizzy white wine, or sweet mixed drinks. But because I know about the cultural expectations of what a woman — and particularly a black woman, a woman of color — is supposed to drink, a feeling of self-consciousness prevails when I order the drinks I want to consume,” Glover writes.
Being a black woman from the South only complicates these assumptions, assumptions that the wine industry, and how they choose to market to black wine drinkers, reinforces. Assumptions that impact how and if they ever reach wine drinkers who look like me.
“People aren’t talking to us, period,” Tanisha Townsend, a wine educator and consultant, says. She’s speaking about the wine industry’s “old-fashioned” approach to consumer marketing — one that doesn’t aim to reach drinkers who aren’t white. The majority of wine advertising and marketing, and many of the industry’s cultural gatekeepers, don’t appear to recognize the diverse preferences or buying power of the black market. They aren’t invested in exploring “what we like, do day-to-day, or about our culture,” Townsend says.
This stands in stark contrast to the world of spirits. Certain brands recognize the buying power of black people, who in turn transform their sales and cement their space in the cultural lexicon. Hennessy, Ciroc, Alizé, Crown Royal, and countless others either had marketing campaigns targeting black drinkers, or capitalized on references in hip hop music.
That strategy has proven remarkably successful. Hennessy, for example, leads the Cognac category. The United States is its largest export market, responsible for 55 percent of its reported €42.6 billion global sales (approximately $48.2 billion in 2019).
Why would the wine industry want to leave what a 2018 Nielsen report asserts is the $1.2 trillion buying power of black American consumers on the table?
Wine writer Julia Coney uses Moscato as an example of the rare wine with tangible connections to black Americans. “When Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross rapped about it years ago in a mixtape? That was it. That’s the whole Moscato thing,” she says.
The reference continued in several songs after that, including Waka Flocka and Roscoe Dash’s 2010 song “No Hands,” in which “Moscato” is said repeatedly in the hook.
Moscato sales were up 100 percent in 2010, Nielsen reported, and rose another 70 percent in 2011. Minaj introduced her own line of Moscato wines, MYX, in 2013. That same year, Danny Brager, Nielsen’s senior vice president of beverage/alcohol, told NPR Moscato sales were growing at a rate of 25 percent annually.
“I’ve been following the wine category for over 10 years. Frankly, I haven’t seen anything like it at all,” Brager told NPR’s Sam Sanders in a piece titled, “Moscato Finds a Younger, Hipper — and Browner — Audience.”
In 2013, Nicki Minaj introduced a line of Moscato wines, MYX, and a Nielsen executive told NPR Moscato sales were growing at a rate of 25 percent annually. Credit: Myxfusions.com
In addition to writing about wine, Coney routinely leads wine-centric trips around the globe and works part-time at a wine store in Washington, D.C. She recalls how, on several occasions, black women came into the store looking for red wine after seeing Kerry Washington’s character drink it on “Scandal.” Similarly, retailer Crate & Barrel reported that, in 2014, it sold 20 times as many oversized wine goblets as it had in previous seasons, due to the glasses’ prominent role on “Scandal.”
Marketing to black wine drinkers could work, all of these instances prove. But in order to do so, wine industry gatekeepers and the agencies that create ads that appear in magazines, newspapers, and on television need to widen their vision.
They need to incorporate black people within their ranks as employees and make efforts to reach black wine writers, bloggers, educators, and consultants. Pay attention to those same people who consistently churn out stellar content to engage their audiences. Do the work that makes the wine industry inclusive, and doesn’t leave the onus on us to be seen.

Grief-stricken KC church members stunned to hear leader may be linked to wife’s murder
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Minister Hopelizzette says she can’t believe her church’s elder might be linked to his wife’s murder.
“I got a call while I was at work about it. I don’t know what happened,” she said. “I can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it’s true. I want to believe it’s a mistake.”
She broke down in tears just thinking about the horrible nightmare she said has rocked their six-year-old church, Repairers of The Breach Christian Center in South Kansas City, to its core.
“It’s beyond unreal because I knew Elder Robert Harris,” Hopelizzette said. “He was my spiritual counselor. He was our go-to man when we couldn’t reach our pastor. He loved her.”
Tanisha Stuart-Harris
Overland Park police said Monday they went to the home of Robert Harris and Tanisha Stuart-Harris to investigate a domestic dispute. Investigators said later that day Robert Harris called police again to report his wife missing.
However, after being questioned, police said Harris confessed to being involved in his wife’s disappearance. Then Tuesday morning, Stuart-Harris’ body was found in a rural area of Raymore near 163rd and Kentucky.
“I just can’t believe it,” Hopelizzette told Fox 4’s Robert Townsend. “She was loving and kind, and she would do anything for you. And she was very soft spoken and sweet but powerful, and she was a loving mother and a devoted, caring wife. She had a daughter and he had a daughter, but they were a family. They had just come back from taking his daughter home. She was with them for the whole Christmas holiday.”
Members and church leaders gathered at Repairers of The Breach to pray for the couple, their loved ones and their now hurting church family.
“Utter shock, anguish, confusion and questions,” said Carlton Funderburke, the senior pastor at Repairers of The Breach Christian Center. “I was privileged to perform their wedding ceremony in July of 2016. They were just good, solid people and outstanding members of their community.”
As of Tuesday night, Robert Harris remained in the Johnson County jail in Olathe. Prosecutors are now reviewing potential criminal charges against him.
In the meantime, losing two pillars of their church has devastated everyone at the Repairers of The Breach Christian Center.
“We’re now leaning on God, trusting God, knowing that He doesn’t make any mistakes,” said Sheila Patton, whose daughter attends the Kansas City church.

Grief-stricken Kansas City dad remembers ‘free spirit’ 8-year-old son who was killed by garbage truck
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The father of an 8-year-old boy killed by a garbage truck says his family is in shock.
“Man, I just never would have thought this would happen at all,” said De’Andre Baker, who said he’s living the worst time of his life.
“It’s a terrible nightmare. I just want to wake up for real, but I know it’s all real,” Baker told Fox 4’s Robert Townsend during an exclusive interview just three days after losing his 8-year-old son, Dra’Viontay Baker.
De’Andre Baker said his son was a free spirit.
Dra’Viontay Baker
“He liked to have fun, and he was real energetic and goofy — real goofy just like me,” the heartbroken dad said. “Every time I look at his picture, it just hurts.”
“He loved his siblings especially his baby sister,” a smiling Tanisha Garrett said about her stepson. “All the time he clanged to her and she clanged to him.”
De’Andre Baker said Friday afternoon Dra’Viontay, a third-grader at Truman Elementary, left school and was excited about spending another weekend with his dad.
But one phone call changed all that.
“A neighbor across the street called me,” De’Andre Baker said. “When she told me what was going on, I dropped the phone, and I just started shaking my head like ‘Hold on, no!’ I then picked my phone back up and everybody on the phone was crying. I couldn’t get there fast enough.”
No one could believe Dra’Viontay — who was outside his home, riding his wagon and playing with a 9-year-old buddy for just a few minutes — had been hit by a garbage truck. The tragedy happened just two weeks before Christmas.
“My boy died at that scene,” De’Andre Baker said. “That truck’s tire was on his little body. As for Christmas, it won’t be the same and I’m not really feeling it, but I will do it for his sisters and brother. I had already bought him the scooter he wanted, and I was going to get him the one thing he really wanted: a hover board with Bluetooth, but now I can’t.”
Garrett said she believes prayers help a lot.
“No one should ever go through that with a child,” she said. “All the support and reaching out, it’s helping, but it will never be the same.”
Family and friends will gather at 3 p.m. Tuesday around a memorial at East 100th Street and Drury Avenue where Dra’Viontay lost his young life. Two Go Fund Me pages have also been set up to assist the boy’s family with his funeral expenses.
