TOUGH MUDDER 2015

Proud to say that I was Team Captain of ‘The Honey Badgers’ - this Amazing group of people. I already miss doing this. Even if the 10.8km course turned out to be 10.8 MILES. Hilarious. We also experienced hot sunshine (in time for an ice bin obstical, which is horrible regardless of the weather) and monsoon rain followed by a storm that lead to the closure of three obsticals. The storm eventually cleared and while it was a shame that we missed all the upper body strength tasks, I’m glad we made it onto Everest, the big finale. Photos (top 6) by Ashley Kerins

The Last Shift

Super cheese. In 2016 my day job was driving a tractor at a farm-play park for toddlers. At the end of that last shift I had some poignant feelings that were worth remembering: relief, of course; I’d finally got my foot in the concept art industry, but also a strange sense of pride and belonging. Something about my love of the outdoors, my tendency towards typically masculine things, the dungarees, camaraderie between staff and being The Tractor Driver, was all very satisfying. (the repetitive work and incessant children’s songs from the trailer behind...not so much) I’m pretty sure I looked this badass as I walked away from my station btw. I might have employed a bit of artistic license on the size of the tractor though...(but yes, it did have eyes)

The Grim Reaper

He’s back! Did a pose sheet for the Character Design Challenge on facebook.

“A charismatic Grim Reaper, passionate about love, life and health. Within his cloak he can bring things back to life, turn back time, tap into the realms of the deceased, or form whatever best illustrates the story he wants to tell. “

This was one of those attempts that I’m sure you’re all familiar with... where you try and come up with a quick, nice and unlaboured style...but inevitably you end up over-rendering it.

Inktober | Week 1

First time I’ve ever done inktober :O I don’t use ink so it was difficult to know what to do with it. I’ve decided to use this month to practice character design for Buckethead. There’s a lot of “sexy” ladies around and I think it’s a shame they don’t get the same characterisation as men...so I thought I’d try my hand at doing that. I’ve got a few keepers here that I’ll probably refine later.

Fish Kite Something I saw in a dream. This kite turns up in this village once a year and flies low over the houses. It’s a different night every year, and no one knows why it happens.The kite seems to have a vague will to move forwards, and over the course of the night it gets snagged on bushes and aerials. It’s often found in the morning, draped over someone’s house, lifeless, and with the string snapped. I love the idea that something so ceremonious could happen without any desire to let itself be known. It’s not there for anyone’s attention, and if you happen to catch sight of it, it’d be pretty special.

Officially a Concept Artist!

I’ve been on an internship for 3 months and this week is my last before I start full time!  \o/ This is the cause of my recent absence here. I continue to develop my graphic novel in my free time, but I doubt I’ll be posting anymore frequently. :/ sorry! That said, I’m hoping to revive my old motivations and passions, and create art for myself again in my free time. We shall see!

This is one of many concepts, but so far the only one fully rendered. I experimented with cartoons a lot earlier this year, which was useful for adding dynamics to my realism, but the novelty has definitely worn off. Of course, I can never just experiment; I have to design a whole universe for every concept and thus there’s an entire surreal, post apocalyptic game idea behind this character. Maybe the semi-rendered ideas will be revisited in future? Who knows! definitely not inspired by the funfair ride at my day job. Nope

Beast Mug  | 2015 I forgot about this mug I painted. I know the composition on the second photo is terrible. You’re all looking at the bloody bird pot, aren’t you? This is why I didn’t get around to posting it. But I can’t be arsed to re-shoot so. Beast mug! One of many things I’d sell in an online shop if my entrepreneurial streak ever amounted to anything.

Rhamphorhynchus muensteri  |  Clay Sculpt This is a life-sized sculpt of one of the smallest pterosaurs. It’s 28cm from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. I’ve only detailed the face, feet, wings and tail vane because the body will eventually be covered in fur in the final silicone cast. This clay sculpt will likely not survive the molding process, so I’ve tried to document it as best I can...(I have to say I feel like I’m saying goodbye to it. Maybe that’s evident in the monochrome...but it does also highlight the surface detail!) I’ve already made some resin teeth and claws which you can see here. They’ve been a nightmare to produce without a vacuum chamber. So I think I’ll just make the remaining claws out of Sculpey. I’m also planning to cast the tail twice and flip the vane over - stick it to the underside. Lazy.
