An Ode to Aubade
Rough draft of a poem I'm working on:
Lathe of the river. Gravity. Perpetual
Fall from higher ground.  Everything still
navigating through narrows that nobody
foresees: So long, it was, when we
Walked that riverbed, too sheepish
To hold hands.  The humid breeze itching under our clothes
Cleansed and cold, the crisp valley air
An ache we hinted in our convoluted talks:
Callow, anxious, what wouldn't love give?
Sun rays from the west, Gaia's current that moves
The ground and its inhabitants, how nervous
We were, stiff and shaking: "Like this,
Do you like it like this?"  Up all night
Then waking to the smell of wood and sweat,
We lay grateful, winded, flushed in our faces,
Our own atmosphere dense and hard to breathe in:
We drank round the clock, seeking extremes,
Too hurried and heartsore to conceptualize time...
Out wading after midnight, we watched groups of fish in the shade
Bask and shimmer, gills widened
but caught on our hooks: Yanked from the water,
They spouted out, then pulsed and quivered
Drowning in air.  Their eyes, resigned and sober
Opening wider and wider... so much longer now
And I still sometimes forget,
That slime on our hands, the moon-glare
Rippling as we crouched on the bank
And scrubbed and scrubbed our hands in the dark water
