OJT EATS | Tang Shen Beef Noodles
We are always on the lookout for good beef noodles in Taipei and so the other day, when we walked past Tang Shen Beef Noodles, we looked it up, saw that it had a pretty impressive google map rating so just popped in to give it a go.
We ordered some lotus root in a yuzu sauce to start with. These were perfect as a little appetizer as they were cool and refreshing. The lotus root was crisp and the citrus of the yuzu was a surprisingly nice complement in flavour.
Onto the main event. This was their signature bowl and as you can see the soup was almost curry coloured. Ther were a number of big chunks of super tender beef in it and the soup had that bone brothy weight to it where you can tell it had clearly been cooked down over a long period of time. The only thing about it was that it could have done with a bit more seasoning as while it had that nice texture, it was lacking a little in flavour. What was also interesting was the sheet of dried tofu skin that you would then soak into the soup. I’d not really seen that before but it was nice. All in all, this was an ok bowl of beef noodles. I enjoyed the actual beef but there are definitely quite a few places to get a tastier bowl of beef noodles in Taipei.
We got these beef bowls to just dump into the soup. To be honest though, these would be fine to just eat by themselves; they were so good! Incredibly juicy as well as literally bursting with flavour. Definitely get these regardless of what else you order.
We also ordered a plate of dumplings. These were actually excellent! The skin had just the right thickness to have a satisfying bite to it and the filling was juicy and generous with prawns. Safe to say, when we walked in, we were not expecting to be more impressed by the dumplings that the beef noodles but we’re not complaining!
You can also get a bowl of beef curry as a side. For the price (NTD80 or about £2), you get a decent sized bowl and they are not stingy with the sauce or the beef. The flavour is good with sizeable chunks of beef and potato. It’s pretty substantial and very good value!
We had a very nice meal here but it was a shame that the most disappointing part of the meal was the actual beef noodles. However, we’d be more than happy to go back just for a bowl of curry, the beef bowls and the dumplings. They also have free unlimited soft drinks which is a nice touch.
