Finally it’s done! This one literally nearly killed me xD But I needed to finish it no matter what because this is the promo for the NejiHinaSummerWeek 2021!

I was so much inspired with the original NejiHinaweek that takes place in December here on Tumblr that I decided to make something like that for Russian-speaking community (yeah, I’m from Russia, nice to meet you), that does exist and there are active and talented writers, but they are separated from the global fandom with the language barrier and don’t know about the December event and don’t participate in it T_T

So there will be the first NejiHina Summer Week for Russian-speaking community, it will take place from 5 to 11 of July.

Thank you so much for all your wonderful suggestions! After taking them into account, we are happy to present you the prompts for ShinRan Week 2021!

Day 1: Childhood & First Meetings Day 2: Seasons & Long Distance Day 3: Fairytales & Black Knight and Princess Day 4: Time Travel & Missing Scenes Day 5: Antagonists & Power Duo Day 6: Domestic & Wedding Day 7: Outsider POV & Creator’s Choice

❧ DAY 1

Childhood Growing up can be a pain. Growing up can be sweet. Growing up together is irreplaceable. From nighttime adventures to study sessions, let’s get a glimpse of Shinichi and Ran’s pre-canon life!

First Meetings First meetings often create lasting impressions, from our couple’s Sakura class encounter to their brush with the Akai family. What happened when young Shinichi first met Eri? When Ran met Agasa? What if they hadn’t known each other all their lives? What would that meeting look like?

❧ DAY 2

Seasons Winter skating, spring cherry blossoms. Fireflies and festivals in the summer, changing colors in the fall. Ran and Shinichi, year-round. (—And if you don’t want that “season”, you can always give it another meaning.)

Long Distance Out of sight, never out of mind. For two yearning souls, distance is nothing and everything at once. The joy and ache of minute-long phone calls? The suffering of waiting? The fear that absence will make the heart grow colder? The much-awaited reunion? Ran did say, “I don't mind waiting for people. Because the longer you wait, when you do meet... You'll be happier.”

❧ DAY 3

Fairytales Are they the doomed lovers of Tanabata reincarnated and given another chance? Does Ran pull a Janet and hold on to Shinichi through hell and high water? Is Shinichi a sulky sultan and Ran his Scheherazade? Does Shinichi turn into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight? A brand-new story featuring a prince and a princess? Let fairytales of all kinds inspire your ShinRan imagination!

Black Knight and Princess We saw them as the Black Knight and Princess in the school play, and we want more. What was going through Ran’s head when Shinichi broke from the script? What would a Black Knight alternate universe look like? One more thing: We all want to see what would have happened if they hadn’t been interrupted.

❧ DAY 4

Time Travel Time is but a concept, especially in Shinichi and Ran’s universe. Shinichi and Ran blasting to the past or traveling ten years into the future? One or both having the power to rewind ten seconds back and evade danger? Want to do a piece inspired by feudal Japan or Prohibition America? This is the prompt for you.

Missing Scenes Can’t stop thinking about That One Scene in the manga/anime that was not within aired material? Like Shinigami Shinichi bandaging Ran’s wounds in the Murderer, Kudou Shinichi Arc? Or the conversation between Shinichi and Sonoko before he ended up in the Black Knight costume in Desperate Revival Arc? Or Shinichi’s internal monologue while he puts a blanket over Ran and eats her chocolate in the Truth Behind Valentine’s Case? Go ahead and bring these missing scenes to life!

❧ DAY 5

Antagonists Shinichi and Ran are Holmes and Moriarty. An FBI agent and a Black Org operative. Academic rivals. Opposing business owners. A “good” angel and a fallen one. Petty people who simply cannot get along. Whatever the case, sparks fly.

Power Duo Strong individually, stronger together. What is the result when you pair a brainy soccer-ball-kicking detective with a sweet-but-deadly karate queen? Answer: A badass power couple saving (or wrecking?) the day — and each other — together. (Battle Couple, Partners in Crime, Bodyguard and Celebrity, Girlboss and Malewife… yeah, we know you want these.)

❧ DAY 6

Domestic All we ever wanted is to see these two living their everyday lives in peace and bliss— baking sweets, cleaning the house, sharing a bed, grocery shopping, adopting a pet, planning a date, all of those. Oh, and engaged or married life. That, too.

Wedding It all boils down to this. Will Shinichi cry once he sees Ran walking down the aisle? What songs are played in the reception? Are they attending a friend’s wedding? Do they catch the bouquet and garter? What happens on the Big Day? On the Big Night?

❧ DAY 7

Outsider POV You are Sonoko. Yukiko. Kogoro. Eisuke. Heiji. Kazuha. Satou-keiji. Someone. Anyone. A complete stranger. People ask you about Shinichi and Ran. What do you tell them?

Creator’s Choice Have a ShinRan creation in mind but can’t quite fit in any of the prompts? Now is your chance to share it!

Syo gives me my very first Tanabata festival experience and it promises to be an unforgettable one.

Originally posted on July 6, 2021.

Tanabata is a huge celebration in Syo’s home prefecture Aichi. Its parades, live performances and game stalls attract thousands, if not tens or even hundreds of thousands of visitors, both young and old. Still, the true eyecatchers of the event are the hand-crafted decorations: I remember how everywhere I looked, colourful streamers and paper decorations were floating in the wind like Orihime’s very own precious fabrics against the backdrop of Hikoboshi’s white cloud cows grazing the sky.

That day, the festival street leading up to the main shrine was absolutely packed. Moving became harder and harder for us the closer we got to the heart of the festivities, with both tourists and locals wriggling around us like salmon against the stream.

One distracted moment later, I realised with an anxious jolt in my chest that I'd already lost sight of Syo. Even with his bold beige and white tiger-striped yukata, the mass was too thick to spot him and I knew that his body, in a very Syo-like fashion, only moved forward with the unstoppable force of an icebreaker. I searched left and right in the crowd but only found more strangers and even fewer traces of my boyfriend. Cold panic clutched my heart at the thought of being lost in this huge, bustling city. In the knowledge that with every step, I strayed away further from him, its grip tightened, crushing my chest with fear.

Then, like a bolt from the blue, a tourist backpack slammed me off balance. Now, gaining back my balance would usually be no big deal... if it wasn’t for the wooden sandals I was wearing. For a beginner at Japanese traditional wear like I was, walking on geta proved to be pretty difficult already without being pushed around from all sides like a ragdoll. I stumbled forward into a whirlwind of colour that flashed before my eyes, praying to find my footing again despite knowing very well that each faltering step could be the fatal one. Arms outstretched, I braced myself for the inevitable fall...

“Gotcha!”

Instead of the hard, sunbaked road, it was Syo’s arms catching me.

“Huh? I thought I lost you but… you’re here!” Dazed by his heroic interference, I only managed a confused stammer as I gazed up at him. His arms cradled me against his chest like a shield against the passers-by.

“Of course I’m here! Let’s move out of the way first.” With his arms still guarding me, we made our way over to the side of the street where Syo assisted me in slipping back into my sandals. “I wouldn’t dream of seeing you get hurt, even less in that pretty yukata you’re wearing. It’d be a real shame if it got ruined, especially when it's your first time wearing it.”

His gaze ran down the silver-threaded constellations scattered across my night blue yukata. Its pattern perfectly matched the story of the star-crossed lovers that inspired this festival. Syo hand-picked and gifted me the yukata for the occasion, even insisting that it was his gift for our anniversary when I begged him to let me pay for it. It was only fitting that I was wearing it for him that day to show him my gratitude and appreciation… even if it was rather flustering to be wearing such a beautiful and richly decorated garment, especially around a majority of casually dressed visitors.

Syo blushed as he tentatively reached out to fix the obi tied around my waist as if his perfectionistic eye was simply unable to let that sloppy detail go unnoticed. “Well, you’re more important than a piece of fabric anyways.” His voice grew a little softer upon meeting my eyes again. “You okay, Ellie?”

“Yeah, I’m okay thanks to you. You really saved me just now.” While holding his hand that gripped mine with equal, if not more, vigilant force for support, I took a few steps until my feet were more or less comfortable in the sandals.

“The bastard who shoved you could’ve at least apologized!” He scowled with the fingers of his free hand clenched into tight fists in readiness to confront the backpack-man. “I couldn’t even see ‘em anymore by the time I got to you. It’s really packed out here.”

“It’s all right, Syo.” I gently squeezed his hand. “I don’t think he realized I was there in the first place.”

“Yeah, maybe that's the case. Tanabata does attract tons of visitors. No surprise there since it’s super fun to attend. You’ll see.” When I was about to let go of his hand, having found as much balance as possible in this updo, Syo clutched mine a little tighter. “As for you, it’s better if you don't suddenly go wandering off. So don’t… don’t let go yet. I want you to stay close before we lose each other in the crowd again. Alright?”

My heart fluttered under the intensity of his concerned gaze. It showed just how much he cared for me, something I’d be eternally grateful for. Likewise, after that minute of bone-chilling panic, I never wanted to lose him again. With a bit of a sheepish smile, I replied: “Okay. I’ll be right with you from now on.”

“Good. Now follow my lead!” Syo turned up his shouting volume to maximum and responded with a toothy smile warmer than the summer sun beating down on our heads. “This is your first time celebrating Tanabata, right? You’re lucky you’re with me. I know all the best spots for the parade and to hang our wishes on the bamboo!”

His boastful words drew a laugh from my lips. “Really? That’s amazing! I’m really lucky that I get to attend the festival with an expert.” Even when caught in a stream of sweaty crowds, meanwhile bumping shoulders with Syo and trying my best to not step on too many toes, I was happier than ever to be with him, with our fingers now tightly entwined. “I’m so excited to make my first Tanabata wish, actually.”

“Me too! It's a real highlight of the celebration so let's save that for last. Speaking of Tanabata wishes, though… Have you thought of one yet?” Syo asked while pushing aside a cluster of rainbow-coloured paper streamers that cascaded from overhead. Doing so, he created a makeshift entryway for us.

“I think I might have one in mind…” Feeling like teasing him a little bit, I added: “But I won’t tell you just yet.”

“Huh?! You really won’t tell me?” He cried out in dramatic disbelief. “I see what game you’re playing with me. Well, if that’s the case, I won’t tell you mine yet either!”

Our joined laughter carried over the buzzing crowds and distant procession music that honoured the Tanabata lovers’ yearly meeting.

On our way down the festival street, we picked up some deliciously-smelling yakitori from one of the food vendors.

“Syo? Will you please eat my spring onion for me…?” I asked in my best pleading voice. With a scrunched up nose, I peeled said vegetable from the skewer to get to the grilled chicken bits instead.

“Hm? Oh right, you don’t like onions.” Syo glanced from his right hand which was holding his own skewer, to his left which was clutching a plastic water bottle. “Guess there's only one way. Ah~”

The sight of his relaxed, closed-eyed expression and his lips parted in anticipation coloured my cheeks a beet red in realization that he wanted me to feed it to him. My heart hammered loudly in my chest as I raised my hand, skipped a beat right when the side of my thumb brushed his lower lip while I placed the slice of onion on his tongue. His lips looked so soft and warm, and shiny with yakitori sauce… An incredibly flustering thought of kissing him jerked back my hand. Even then, the warmth of his breath lingered on my skin in the same way the reverie where I gave him a sweet festival kiss did in my thoughts.

“What’s with that embarrassed face you’re making?” Syo grinned while chewing down the spring onion as if nothing flustering had happened at all. “It's OK to do couply stuff like this every now and then, y’know.”

“I know… I guess I got a little embarrassed. Even though I’ve been dreaming of sharing these kinds of moments with you today.” I sighed in regret of the missed opportunity to act all lovey-dovey with him.

“Hey, don’t look all sad like that. C'mon, Ellie! It’s a festival filled with joy and music so I only want to see you smile today.” In a rush of boldness driven by his goal, he planted a sticky kiss on my lips that took me by surprise. “There! Does this make you happy?”

With a bright red blush up to my ears that rivalled his own, I gave him my biggest smile.

By the time we were done playing festival games and enjoying the parade, the first stars already adorned the sky. Ever since the onion-incident, my face hadn't gone without smiling or laughing for even a second. So much so that I felt an exhilarating kind of soreness in my cheek muscles, all thanks to Syo.

On the backstreets, the festivities had faded to a distant murmur so the thunks of our sandals on the pavement bounced loudly off the walls. Though there was only a handful of passers-by that entered and exited the restaurants scattered in this area, Syo and I were still walking closely together, still with our fingers intertwined. Not even the evening breeze was able to chill the happy flush on my cheeks or, despite the yukata’s fairly thin fabric, the warm sensation that had overflown from my heart and spread through my entire chest.

“Thank you so much for taking me to Tanabata today.” Wrapped up in the comfortable warmth of his body snug beside mine, I acted on impulse as I leaned my head against his shoulder. It made him stir for a second but then he relaxed again, squeezing my hand a little tighter in appreciation. “I had an amazing time exploring the festival with you.”

“Sure thing! It goes without saying that I had loads of fun too.” His response was light-hearted but one sneaky glance revealed the happy grin on his face. Then, in a playful grumble, Syo continued: “But you’re talking as if our day is done already.”

“I haven't forgotten! We need to make our wishes first and then have dinner with your grandparents and Kaoru and his girlfriend.” My heart made an excited somersault at the prospect of more togetherness with Syo and his close-knit family. I looked forward to taking in the nostalgic feeling that lingered in the Kurusu home as if the countless stories from the past had settled in the walls. After all, his fondest childhood memories had their very foundations there. “I’m looking forward to everything we have planned tonight but... I guess I just wanted to let you know that I’m already really happy today.”

When Syo stopped mid-step, I curiously raised my head to catch him gazing at me and, up close like this, I was able count the stars’ soft gleaming reflections in his eyes. “I’m happy to hear you say that. As your boyfriend, it’s my duty to make you smile no matter what, after all.” Smiling gently, he tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his fingertips lingering on my face. Then, suddenly a little shy, he scratched his cheek, saying: “Y’know, I’ve been to Tanabata countless times before ever since I was a kid but somehow… I feel like this year’s festival is gonna take up an extra special spot in my heart. Probably because you’ve been by my side the entire time.”

My chest drew together as if clinging to the sound of his honest words. With our lips curved into a smile, our faces neared to share a sweet kiss before we headed to the end destination of our Tanabata itinerary.

His secret wishing spot was really one in a million. With a soft-voiced caution, Syo guided me on the stepping stones across a small pond surrounded by groves of bamboo. All around us, small light spheres danced on the water like fallen star fragments. Looking up at the clear, darkened sky, I wondered if Orihime was with her beloved Hikoboshi right now. If she crossed the river on the shaky wings of the magpies while holding his warm hand in hers in the same way I’m holding Syo’s.

The absence of noise besides the babbling of the pond and rustling of the bamboo grass summoned a peaceful atmosphere that was perfect for writing down our wishes on matching pink paper strips. While Syo was scribbling away with a look of deep thought, I gazed at him in an attempt to find the right words to express my own wish. Eventually, when he put down his pen, he picked up my stare and responded with a smile that soothed all my worries. As if the answer had been in the blue of his eyes all along, the words spilled from my pen onto the paper.

“All done? Alright, let’s tie ‘em up!”

After fastening our paper strips to the bamboo tree, we were finally able to take a look at the other’s wish dancing in the breeze.

Between the two of us, a timid silence that sung of unspoken but written promises had settled. Then, Syo reached for my hand, bringing it close to his chest. His gesture was careful yet his gaze brimmed with unbridled determination. I clasped my other hand around his in turn, hoping it conveyed my same desire to keep on being each other’s greatest source of strength. Together, we vowed to the stars:

“Let’s make our wishes come true.”

KnY Cast: Tanzaku Translations

Today is 7/7, a.k.a. Tanabata, the Star Festival! (Well, actually those stars are not on the same side of the Milky Way tonight because the modern Japanese calendar is a mess, but I digress.) It's celebrated with people writing wishes on strips of bright paper and then hanging them on bamboo, and these are called Tanzaku. Traditionally you'd wish for things you'd like to get better at, like better penmanship, but nowadays it's more like letters to Santa Claus wishing for anything. You can write your own KnY Tanzaku on the Kimetsu.com 2021 event page, but some of the cast recorded theirs and I burst out laughing hard enough at Ubuyashiki's that I felt I had to share. Hanae Natsuki (Tanjiro): "I want my daughter to like me." Kito Akari (Nezuko): "I want my legs to be thinner." Shimono Hiro (Zenitsu): "I wanna go to an onsen!!"
