Week in Review
October 23rd-29th
Welcome to Fragile Practice, where I attempt to make something of value out of stuff I have to read.
My future plan is to do longer-form original pieces on interesting topics or trends. For now, I'm going to make the weekly reviews habitual and see if I have any time left.
Technology
OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats - Tech Crunch; Kyle Wiggers
OpenAI launched a new research team called AI Safety and Security to investigate the potential harms of artificial intelligence focused on AI alignment, AI robustness, AI governance, and AI ethics.
Note: Same energy as “cigarette company funds medical research into smoking risks”.
Artists Allege Meta’s AI Data Deletion Request Process Is a ‘Fake PR Stunt’ - Wired; Kate Knibbs
Artists who participated in Meta’s Artificial Intelligence Artist Residency Program accused the company of failing to honor their data deletion requests and claim that Meta used their personal data to train its AI models without their consent.
Note: Someday we will stop being surprised that corporate activities without obvious profit motive are all fake PR stunts.
GM and Honda ditch plan to build cheaper electric vehicles - The Verge; Andrew J. Hawkins
General Motors and Honda cancel their joint venture to develop and produce cheaper electric vehicles for the US market, citing the chip shortage, rising costs of battery materials, and the changing market conditions.
Note: What are the odds this isn’t related to the 7 billion dollars the US government announced to create hydrogen hubs.
'AI divide' across the US leaves economists concerned - The Register; Thomas Claburn
A new study by economists from Harvard University and MIT reveals a significant gap in AI adoption and innovation across different regions in the US.
The study finds that AI usage is highest in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, but was also noted in Nashville, San Antonio, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Diego, and Tampa, as well as Riverside, Louisville, Columbus, Austin, and Atlanta.
Nvidia to Challenge Intel With Arm-Based Processors for PCs - Bloomberg; Ian King
Nvidia is using Arm technology to develop CPUs that would challenge Intel processors in PCs, and which could go on sale as soon as 2025.
Note: I am far from an NVIDIA fan, but I’m stoked for any amount of new competition in the CPU space.
New tool lets artists fight AI image bots by hiding corrupt data in plain sight - Engadget; Sarah Fielding
A team at the University of Chicago created Nightshade, a tool that lets artists fight AI image bots by adding undetectable pixels into an image that can alter how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like.
Nightshade is intended to protect artists work and has been tested on both Stable Diffusion and an in-house AI built by the researchers.
IBM's NorthPole chip runs AI-based image recognition 22 times faster than current chips - Tech Xplore; Bob Yirka
NorthPole combines the processing module and the data it uses in a two-dimensional array of memory blocks and interconnected CPUs, and is reportedly inspired by the human brain.
NorthPole can currently only run specialized AI processes and not training processes or large language models, but the researchers plan to test connecting multiple chips together to overcome this limitation.
Apple’s $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans - Ars Technica; Kevin Purdy
Note: These scans are super cool. And make me feel somewhat better about insisting on quality cables. A+.
The Shifting Web
On-by-default video calls come to X, disable to retain your sanity - The Register; Brandon Vigliarolo
Video and audio calling is limited to anyone you follow or who is in your address book, if you granted X permission to comb through it.
Calling other users also requires that they’ve sent at least one direct message to you before.
Only premium users can place calls, but everyone can receive them.
Google Search Boss Says Company Invests to Avoid Becoming ‘Roadkill’ - The New York Times; Nico Grant
Google’s senior vice president overseeing search said that he sees a world of threats that could humble his company at any moment.
Google Maps is getting new AI-powered search updates, an enhanced navigation interface and more - Tech Crunch; Aisha Malik
Note: These AI recommender systems are going to be incredibly valuable advertising space. It is interesting that Apple decided to compete with Google in maps but not in basic search, but has so far not placed ads in the search results.
Reddit finally takes its API war where it belongs: to AI companies - Ars Technica; Scharon Harding
Reddit met with generative AI companies to negotiate a deal for being paid for its data, and may block crawlers if no deal is made soon.
Note: Google searches for info on Reddit often seem more effective than searching Reddit itself. If they are unable to make a deal, and Reddit follows through, it will be a legitimate loss for discoverability but also an incredibly interesting experiment to see what Reddit is like without Google.
Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off - 404 Media; Emanuel Maiberg
Bandcamp’s new owner (Songtradr) offered jobs to just half of existing employees, with cuts disproportionately hitting union leaders. Every member of the union’s eight-person bargaining team was laid off, and 40 of the union's 67 members lost their jobs.
Songtradr spokesperson Lindsay Nahmiache claimed that the firm didn’t have access to union membership information.
Note: This just sucks. Bandcamp is rad, and it’s hard to imagine it continuing to be rad after this. I wonder if Epic had ideas for BC that didn’t work out.
Surveillance & Digital Privacy
Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status: 'Very Creepy' - Slashdot
Mozilla gave the current state of digital privacy a 75.6/100, with 100 being the creepiest.
They measured security features, data collection, and data sharing practices of over 500 gadgets, apps, and cars to come up with their score.
Every car Mozilla tested failed to meet their privacy and security standards.
Note: It would be great if even one auto brand would take privacy seriously.
EPIC Testifies in Support of Massachusetts Data Privacy and Protection Act -Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
Massachusetts version of ADPPA.
Note: While it may warm my dead heart to see any online privacy protections in law, scrambling to do so in response to generative AI is unlikely to protect Americans in any meaningful way from the surveillance driven form of capitalism we’ve all been living under for decades.
Complex Spy Platform StripedFly Bites 1M Victims - Dark Reading
StripedFly is a complex platform disguised as a cryptominer and evaded detection for six years by using a custom version of EternalBlue exploit, a built-in Tor network tunnel, and trusted services like GitLab, GitHub, and Bitbucket to communicate with C2 servers and update its functionality.
iPhones have been exposing your unique MAC despite Apple's promises otherwise - Ars Technica
A privacy feature which claimed to hide the Wi-Fi MAC address of iOS devices when joining a network was broken since iOS 14, and was finally patched in 17.1, released on Wednesday.
Note: I imagine this bug was reported a while ago, but wasn’t publically reported until the fix was released as a term of apple’s bug bounty program.
What the !#@% is a Passkey? - Electronic Frontier Foundation
Note: I welcome our passkey overlords.

Taylor Swift - The Era's Tour - Tampa Day 2
Picture it- cotton candy colored sunset skies, with 60,000+ best friends singing the bridge to cruel summer together. What a night to remember! My mom, aka my best friend since 1989, was my plus one and we had such a great time and made so many memories. We've had a few really hard years, between losing her sister (my aunt) and my grandparents it's just been so empty in our lives. My mom was the oldest of four siblings and grew up fast. She's worked all her life, and raised my brother and I all on her own. My brother and I spent most of our childhood being raised by my aunt and grandparent's while my mom was working long hours. My grandparents went through various types of cancers and ultimately passed from cancer. My aunts passing was unexpected due to a surgery complication. At times, it feels like my mom, brother and I had to grow up so quickly. During the start of the pandemic in 2020, my grandmother decided to stop Chemo and asked us to let her pass at home peacefully with us by her side. At this point, I had already lost my aunt and grandfather and was really struggling in all aspects of my life. I was stuck in a lifeless corporate America job for 10 years and felt like I had no time to enjoy the "now" or the people I love. My grandmother's last words to me were "I wish I could have seen you find your person. I wish I could have seen you get married." I never felt she had an old school mentality and just wanted me to get married. In fact, she was the complete opposite. She didn't want me to be stuck working for "The Man" and that I was deserving of love and a life worth living. Shortly after my grandmother passed away, @taylorswift released her #Folklore and #Evermore albums. My mom surprised me with the vinyl for Folklore and I was so so excited to listen to it. I setup my room for a total folklore vibe, two pups in hand, and as always my iced oat milk latte in a candle lit room. Dropped the needle onto the vinyl and for the very first time in forever I felt human again. @taylorswift #Folklore album gave me the space to dream, feel, and gave me hope. I don't know how else to describe what I felt that night into words. I guess, the only way I can describe what it felt like was when you're in the ocean... it's not night time but it's kind of dark out... and a wave crashes on you... and you're under the water nervous but you finally reach the surface and gasp for air and realize it's okay, it's not that bad, you're going to be okay...and you swim back to the shore and just sit on the beach looking back at the monster that almost got you, but didn't. You're okay now. You're going to make it. That's what listening to @taylorswift #Folklore album felt like. Soon after, #Evermore was released and it honestly just sent me to the edge listening to #Marjorie lol. I was so thankful @taylorswift wrote that song and was vulnerable enough as an artist and as a person to share a song that was written for her grandmother. I've noticed grief is really hard to talk about. People have opinions on how you should grieve. It's such a personal journey... and I have honestly been struggling with my grief since June 1, 2020 after losing my grandmother. So fast forward to two weeks ago, after already experiencing #TheErasTour with my mom in April, I decided to quit my corporate America job (after 10 years!). I have no job lined up, but something changed me that night at the concert. Taylor's music, her fans, her writing/lyrics, her view on making the world better, giving back to so many, and all her positive energy she injects into this world gave me so much hope that night. I want a better life. I need a better life. And really.... this is a long winded open thank you letter to @taylorswift @taylornation . As a fellow 1989 baby, thank you for giving me a reason to create a new tumblr (it's been a minute lol) and pour my feelings and heart out to strangers again... it's been a long time coming...

Top Benefits of Indoor Business Signs for Tampa Businesses
In today’s competitive market, creating a strong and lasting impression on potential customers is crucial for any business. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through indoor business signs. For Tampa-based businesses, having high-quality indoor signage can make a significant difference in customer perception and overall success. In this blog, we’ll explore the top benefits of indoor business signs, how they can elevate your brand, and why partnering with a professional sign company in Tampa, FL is essential for achieving optimal results.
1. Brand Recognition and Reinforcement
One of the primary purposes of indoor business signs is to establish and reinforce your brand identity. Whether it’s through your logo, company name, or tagline, indoor signs help create a consistent brand image throughout your business space. When customers walk into your office, store, or facility, they should immediately recognize who you are and what you stand for.
Well-designed indoor signage keeps your brand at the forefront of your customers' minds, which is especially important in today’s cluttered marketplace. The more familiar people become with your brand, the more likely they are to trust your products or services. High-quality indoor signs help create a cohesive and professional atmosphere, allowing you to make a lasting impact on your clients.
Example:
For instance, if you run a restaurant in Tampa, custom indoor signs such as a stylish menu board, wall murals with your brand's story, or directional signage featuring your logo can give the space a polished and professional look while reinforcing your brand identity.
2. Enhanced Customer Experience
Another significant benefit of indoor business signs is the role they play in enhancing the customer experience. Effective signage can guide customers through your space, provide them with necessary information, and help them feel more at ease in your environment.
Directional and wayfinding signs, for example, can help customers navigate large office buildings or retail stores, ensuring they can easily find what they’re looking for. This reduces frustration and increases the likelihood of a positive experience, ultimately leading to higher customer satisfaction.
In a city like Tampa, where businesses often host tourists, clear indoor signs can make a big difference in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable visit. For businesses like hotels, shopping malls, or corporate offices, strategic indoor signs are essential to maintaining a professional and welcoming atmosphere.
3. Increased Sales and Promotions
Indoor business signs can also directly contribute to increased sales by promoting products, services, or special offers. Point-of-purchase displays, promotional signs, and sale banners inside your store can catch customers’ attention and influence their buying decisions.
Whether you're running a retail shop, a restaurant, or a service-oriented business in Tampa, indoor signage gives you an opportunity to showcase key items or limited-time promotions. Well-placed signage can encourage impulse purchases and highlight popular or seasonal products, effectively driving up your sales numbers.
For example, retail stores often use eye-catching signs near check-out areas to promote additional products, or signs within different sections to highlight current deals or exclusive collections.
4. Improved Employee Morale and Productivity
Believe it or not, indoor business signs aren’t just for customers—they can also have a positive impact on your employees. Professionally designed signage that reflects your brand values, mission, or company culture can help foster a sense of pride and motivation among your team.
Inspirational wall signs, mission statements, or even functional signs that promote team collaboration can enhance the overall atmosphere of your workspace. When employees feel connected to the brand they represent, they are more likely to perform better and take pride in their work.
In an office environment, indoor signs can be both motivational and practical. For instance, a Tampa-based tech company might use large, bold wall murals displaying innovative messages or company milestones. These visual cues can serve as reminders of company goals and promote a positive work environment.
5. Professional Appearance and Ambiance
Indoor business signs are an essential element in establishing a professional ambiance in your workspace. Whether you’re hosting potential clients or welcoming customers, the overall aesthetic of your office or store plays a critical role in their perception of your business.
Clean, modern, and well-designed signage communicates professionalism, organization, and attention to detail. Whether it’s a sleek reception area sign, custom frosted acrylic signage for conference rooms, or elegant wayfinding signs throughout the building, these visual elements reflect your brand's commitment to quality.
Businesses in the hospitality and real estate sectors in Tampa, for instance, can elevate their offices with sophisticated indoor business signs that match their upscale brand image. Clients or guests will be impressed by the thoughtfulness of the design, which builds trust and encourages a positive relationship with your company.
6. Compliance with ADA Standards
In the U.S., businesses must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandates that public spaces be accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. ADA-compliant indoor signs are a legal requirement, and they play an essential role in ensuring that your business is welcoming to all individuals.
ADA signs typically include features such as braille, raised text, and contrasting colors to assist individuals with visual impairments. By investing in ADA-compliant signage, you not only meet legal requirements but also demonstrate your commitment to inclusivity.
A trusted sign company in Tampa, FL can help you create ADA-compliant indoor signs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, allowing you to meet accessibility standards without compromising your brand identity.
7. Cost-Effective Marketing Tool
One of the most cost-effective forms of marketing, indoor business signs provide continuous advertising without requiring an ongoing investment. Once installed, your signs work 24/7, promoting your business and enhancing your space without any additional costs. Unlike other forms of marketing, you won’t need to pay for advertising space or regularly update your content (unless you choose to).
Considering the relatively low cost of high-quality indoor signage, it’s one of the best long-term investments you can make for your business. Whether you choose custom wall decals, acrylic signs, or digital displays, the upfront cost is quickly offset by the benefits of improved brand recognition, customer experience, and potential sales growth.
8. Customizable and Versatile
One of the great benefits of indoor business signs is their versatility. You can choose from a wide variety of materials, sizes, and designs to perfectly match your brand’s identity and your space's aesthetic. Whether you prefer sleek, modern signage or classic, traditional styles, indoor signs can be tailored to fit your unique needs.
From frosted acrylic signs to wall murals, banners, and digital displays, the possibilities are endless. Partnering with a professional sign company in Tampa, FL ensures that your indoor signs are fully customized and aligned with your business goals.
In conclusion, investing in high-quality indoor business signs offers Tampa businesses a wide range of benefits, from boosting brand recognition to improving customer experience and enhancing employee morale. Indoor signage is a powerful and cost-effective tool for making a lasting impression and reinforcing your brand's message. If you’re ready to take your indoor signage to the next level, contact a reputable sign company in Tampa, FL like Southlake Signs Tampa for customized solutions that meet your business needs.

The History of Tampa, Florida
In the 19th century, Florida became a territory of the United States, and Tampa began to develop as a settlement. The area's natural harbor and access to the Gulf of Mexico made it an ideal location for shipping and trade. In 1849, Fort Brooke was established by the U.S. Army near present-day downtown Tampa. It played a significant role in the Seminole Wars and the American Civil War. The city of Tampa was officially incorporated in 1855. However, its growth slowed until the late 19th century when the railroad arrived, and the cigar industry transformed the city. In the 1880s, Vicente Martinez Ybor, a Spanish-born cigar manufacturer, established a cigar factory in Tampa. This led to a wave of immigration, primarily from Cuba and other Latin American and European countries. The influx of immigrants shaped the cultural diversity still evident in Tampa today.
The Florida Aquarium
The Florida Aquarium offers a variety of exhibits that showcase marine life from around the world. These include the Wetlands of Florida, which features a recreated Florida wetland habitat, showcasing the diverse plant and animal species in these ecosystems; the Bays and Beaches, which highlights the unique habitats and wildlife of Florida's coastal areas, including coral reefs, mangroves, and dunes; the Journey to Madagascar, which showcases the unique ecosystems of Madagascar, home to a wide range of exotic plant and animal species; and the Coral Reef, showcasing the beauty and importance of coral reefs, with various species of fish, invertebrates, and colorful corals. It also offers various opportunities for visitors to have up-close encounters with marine animals.
Power Restored at Tampa International Airport
While airports strive to maintain an uninterrupted power supply, power outages can still occur due to various factors such as severe weather conditions, equipment failures, grid issues, or construction incidents. Power outages can affect critical airport systems, including communication networks, baggage handling systems, and flight information displays. As a result, flights may be delayed or canceled, causing inconvenience for passengers who may have to reschedule their travel plans or wait for extended periods at the airport. However, airports typically have backup power systems, such as generators and UPS systems, to mitigate the impact of power outages. These backup systems are designed to provide temporary power until the primary power source is restored or until alternative measures can be implemented. Click here to read more.

Smart cities are neither, 2021 edition
The lockdown was a chaotic time for “smart cities.” On the one hand, the most prominent smart city project in the world — Google’s Sidewalk Labs project in Toronto — collapsed thanks to the company’s lies about privacy and land use coming to light.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/05/07/just-look-at-it/#ding-dong
On the other hand, the standalone vendors that promise smart city services that you can graft onto your “dumb” city saw their fortunes surge, as the world’s great metropolises sleepwalked into a surveillance nightmare.
From license plate cameras to facial recognition to fake cellphone towers to location data harvested from vehicles and mobile devices, city governments shoveled billions into the coffers of private-sector snoops in the name of crimefighting and technocratic management.
The smart city has long been criticized as a means of quietly transforming public spaces of democratic action into private spaces of technological surveillance and control. Recent books like Jathan Sadowski’s “Too Smart” (2020) make the case in depth.
http://www.jathansadowski.com/book
Books can set out a long argument and cite examples in support of it, but those examples need to be updated regularly and the critique likewise because the field is moving so quickly — as is the critical response.
This month, Harvard’s Belfer Center published “Whose Streets? Our Streets! (Tech Edition),” a long report by Rebecca Williams that revisits the smart city nightmare in light of the mass protests, lockdowns and other high-intensity events of 2020/1.
https://www.belfercenter.org/publication/whose-streets-our-streets-tech-edition
As Williams writes, the smart city always starts with the rejections of participatory dialogue (“What would we like in our neighborhood?”) in favor of technocratic analysis (“They will design data collection that will inform them to what they will do with our neighborhood”).
Technocrats don’t want dialogue about surveillance because the dialogue always leads to a rejection. The Sidewalk Labs consultations in Toronto were overwhelmingly dominated by people who didn’t want a giant American monopolist spying on their literal footsteps 24/7.
Detroiters roundly rejected a $2.5m project to put cameras at their city’s intersections. When Apple asked Iphone owners whether they wanted to be tracked by apps (switching from opt out to opt in) 96% of users said no.
The commercial surveillance industry runs consent theater — whether that’s grey-on-white 8-point warnings that “Use of this site indicates consent to our terms of service” or discreet signs under street cameras: “This area under surveillance.”
https://onezero.medium.com/consent-theater-a32b98cd8d96
Plans for urban technological surveillance don’t survive real public consultation. The people just don’t know what’s good for ’em, so the vendors and the officials cutting checks to them have to instrument the city for spying on the down-low.
This secrecy festers, and the harms it brings are not limited to spying on people and chilling democratic protest. Secrecy also allows vendors to get away with overcharging and underdelivering.
CBP procured facial recognition spycams that analyzed 23m people in public spaces and never caught a single bad guy, while Chicago PD murdered a Black child called Adam Toledo after Shotspotter falsely reported a gunshot at his location.
Secret procurements for defective technology wastes money and puts communities of color at risk — but they also create systemic, *technological* risk, because they embed janky garbage software from shitty surveillance vendors right in the urban fabric.
Vendors who lie about how well their facial recognition or gunshot triangulation works also lie about their information security, and these tools get hacked on the reg, leaking sensitive personal information about millions of city-dwellers to identity thieves.
This defective, sloppy spyware is also a dark, moist environment perfectly suited to harboring ransomware infections, which can see vital services from streetlights to public transit frozen because some “smart city” grifter added a badly secured surveillance layer to it.
Because smart cities are inherently paternalistic (because they always bypass democratic dialog in favor of technocratic fiat), they replicate and magnify society’s biases and discrimination, with a coating of empirical facewash: “It’s not racism, it’s just math.”
Williams cites many 2020/1 examples of this, from Baltimore’s 25:1 ratio of CCTVs in Black neighborhoods to white neighborhoods, to Tampa and Detroit’s use of surveillance tech for “safety” in public housing.
Meanwhile, in Lucknow, India, the technocratic solution to an epidemic of sexist street harassment was to surveil women (“to protect them”) rather than the men who perpetrated the harassment.
https://perma.cc/FU62-NBQF
All of this is driven by private companies who mobilize investor capital and profits to sell more and more surveillance tech to cities. The antidemocratic, secret procurement process leads to more antidemocratic forms of privatization.
Democracy is replaced with corporate decision-making; constitutional protections are replaced by corporate policy; and surveillance monopolies expand their footprint, fill their coffers and sell more surveillance tech.
And far from making police accountable, surveillance gear on its own simply gives corrupt cops a broader set of tools to work with — as in Mexico City, where the C5 CCTV project let corrupt cops blackmail people and extort false confessions.
https://perma.cc/87QK-3HZG
Williams ends with a highly actionable call to arms, setting out a ten-point program for analyzing smart city proposals and listing organizations and networks (like the Electronic Frontier Alliance) that have been effective at pushing back.

Leadership Pasco Rolls Out Bus Tour 2.0
Bus Tour 2.0 made history on March 12, 2024, as the first Leadership Pasco alumni and community mobile networking and educational event. It was an idea from a board meeting executed through the leadership of board member Kathy Masucci '22 and the alumni committee. Leadership Pasco Rolls Out Bus Tour 2.0, an Alumni and Community Experience The day began with a light breakfast and networking at Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus, Wesley Chapel. From there the sold-out event group boarded a 55 passenger Olympus Limo motor coach (with new bus smell) with destinations in Central and East Pasco. During the ride attendees learned about the major Pasco business and construction developments happening from the people in the know. Hope Kennedy, North Tampa Bay Chamber President shared so much about current and future Pasco demographics, business, and plans. She also spoke about the growth of infrastructure to match the numbers of new rooftops. The group also heard from Michael Wolf '24, Vice President, Columnar/DoubleBranch and Phillips & Jordan and Art Phelps, Senior Vice President, Industrial and Commercial, Phillips and Jordan, Inc. as we viewed the expansive mixed-use development, DoubleBranch, formerly known as Pasco Town Center. The project will feature 4 million square feet of industrial development, 725,000 square feet of offices, 400,000 square feet of retail, 3,500 housing units and 300 hotel beds on a 965-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Interstate 75 and State Road 52. At completion, DoubleBranch will generate over $600 million in long-term economic impact on an estimated $2 billion buildout for the surrounding area. As companies locate, the development is anticipated to be home to 6,000 jobs including many in the logistics, life sciences, and healthcare target industry sectors. Mike Bishop '17, Senior Vice President, Pasco Economic Development Council (PEDC) spoke about projects the PEDC is involved in around the county and answered many questions along the way about land for sale, recently sold, or in development. The tour learned more about PEDC's mission and structure. PEDC is the lead economic development organization dedicated to the overall growth and prosperity of Pasco County through the development of a sustainable and diversified economy. Pasco EDC is a private, non-profit organization that promotes countywide economic development and continues to be a strong partnership funded by corporate and public investors focused on the economic vitality of Pasco County. Bishop also spoke about SMARTstart Small Business program and other tools for small business success. The bus drove to the new Moffitt Innovation Campus, also known as Speros for a tasty lunch and presentation by Casey Cane, Moffitt, Speros FL, Pasco County Global Innovation Center. Speros is a 775-acre Pasco County campus to be used for the future of revolutionary cancer treatment and research. The campus will feature 16 million square feet of lab, office, manufacturing, and clinical space. Several hundred acres will remain natural and a habitat for Florida wildlife. The tour learned the name Speros, is a derivative of the Latin verb “Sperare,” meaning “to hope” or “to look forward to." Approximately 14,000 Moffitt team members will be employed on campus at projectcompletion. Harold Sample '91, was an attendee of the tour and shared Pasco County history with us, along with sights such as Angeline Academy of Innovation, Land 'O Lakes, and the Metro Lagoon communities of Eperson in Wesley Chapel and Mirada in San Antonio. Sample and Kurt Conover '92 retired from conducting our class Bus Tour with Class of 2024, and new leaders of Michele Baker '97 and Frances Werner-Wakins '11 will be taking on the two-day program in 2025. Both attended Bus Tour 2.0 and have been working with Sample and Conover on next-year's program day. The tour traveled back to the Wiregrass Recreation Center where they learned more about the tourism industry that is putting Pasco on the map. Tourism Day is our newest program day, so most of our alumni have not experienced the full day. Adam Thomas '24 Director of Florida's Sports Coast, our tourism bureau, and co-chair of Tourism Day presented that component along with a tour and details on Wiregrass Recreation Center by Ronnie Outen, Operations Manager and Basketball Director. Attendees concluded with an optional happy hour at Skybox, Wesley Chapel’s only rooftop bar, at Residence Inn. It was a beautiful day, and a great way to travel around the county to learn from the best and have some great conversations with new and old friends. Many of the attendees are members of the community who plan to learn more about Leadership Pasco or who have plans to apply for Class of 2025. About Leadership Pasco Leadership Pasco, established 1988, is a highly respected leadership development program designed to connect, educate, and engage emerging and existing leaders in Pasco County. The program focuses on fostering a deeper understanding of the community, promoting collaboration, and inspiring participants to take an active role in shaping the future of the county.Website: https://leadershippasco.com Read the full article
