Osaka Day Trip - Dotonbori, America-mura, and Shinsekai
Today began at about the same as most days, 10am wake up time followed by a shower and getting dressed followed by conbini breakfast and then our day begins. We headed over to the train station to make our way to Osaka, and hopped on the Hankyu Kyoto line which goes straight to Osaka-Umeda station. The train itself was pretty nice, as it seemed decently new and had a cool little rock garden-esque nook midway through the train car.

After getting to Osaka, we hopped on another train to get to the Nanba Yasaka Shrine, which was only about a 10 minute train ride from here. I had not thought this shrine would be as impressive as it is, but seeing it in person was pretty incredible. The sheer size of the lion statue, called “Shishiden” was amazing to see in person. The lion with his mouth agape is said to swallow evil spirits, and many people come here hoping for academic improvement, job offers and success in examinations. Though the exact date of when this shrine was founded is not known, according to legend it dates back to Emperor Nintoku’s rule in the 4th century.

Once we had spent our fair share of time at the shrine, we walked back to the main Dotonbori area, which is hands down the busiest and most well known area in Osaka. There are so many shops and restaurants and things to do here that it gets a bit overwhelming at times. One thing that really sticks out here is the massive Don Quijote store, which includes a huge ferris wheel that has not been running the past 2 times i’ve been here so i don’t know what that’s about. We browsed around for a while and leisurely walked through the streets until we had worked up an appetite and wanted to get some lunch. We walked by a place that looked decently cheap and tasty and after looking at the menu for a bit outside one of the employees came out to greet us and lead us upstairs to the restaurant.

Once inside the vibes were not amazing and after taking a look at the menu in the restaurant we realized they trolled us and had higher prices inside than were advertised. This was not a massive issue but what was an issue was when we ordered our food and it looked nothing like the photo. They surprisingly trolled us again and brought out what would be probably the worst meal i’ve eaten in all of Japan. I also do not get the hype about Okonomiyaki, as cabbage, dough sauce and bonito flakes honestly leaves a lot to be desired. My food was not very good at all and somehow they managed to make even the rice taste weird. To top it all off this ended up being the most expensive single meal we have ordered thus far, which is insane considering I literally ate wagyu beef last night. Lesson learned - do not get trolled by sneaky restaurant employees.

After our subpar meal, we walked around the area for a bit longer before heading over to the America-mura neighborhood area. This neighborhood is famous for being a hub of youth and western oriented culture, including the likes of street art, small independent galleries and cafes, as well as thrift and vintage stores. I enjoyed this area a lot and thought it was pretty cool to walk around in. The stores were interesting but I always go back to the same issue of not understanding why Japanese people only want to buy American clothes, as all of the thrift stores solely carry items from America. I probably see more people wearing US college merchandise in Japan than I see on my own college campus back in Gainesville. We also stumbled upon a store called “Florida” which was a thrift store that had a curated selection of secondhand clothing. One item in particular that stuck out to me was a random T-shirt from the Don Garlits drag racing museum in Ocala, which I pass by every time I drive to and from my parents house to Gainesville.

After this we made our way back over to Dotonbori and found ourselves randomly at a Purikura place, which is a popular type of photo booth with the Japanese youth. Many of them have extreme filters on the photos and make you look as “beautiful” as possible, which is a pretty foreign thing to Americans as we do not really edit our photos this much and it just looks silly. Though that sentiment is not shared here and it is seemingly taken a bit more serious and seen as cute.

Following this, we decided to head over to Shinsekai, which is now a famous shopping and eating area. Though it once served as a gathering place for laborers who rebuilt Osaka after World War II. It is interesting to see how things like that can go from something so simple and unintentionally turn into something as massive and popular as this street.

I enjoyed walking through here and seeing everything in the area. There were a ton of cool buildings here and far too many restaurants to count, though I was intrigued as to why most of them were Yakitori places. Once we got a bit hungry we found a quaint little restaurant which looked promising. It was a Yakitori place and so we ordered a bunch of small dishes, including gyoza, croquettes, and kushikatsu. The food was pretty decent but the Japanese croquettes definitely took the cake for the best item.

Once we finished dinner, we walked back to the Dotonbori area to see about finding a specific ice cream place that I had found online called “Cremia” which is apparently made with milk from Hokkaido, which has a mild vanilla like flavor and makes for amazingly soft and delicious ice cream thanks to the high milk fat content. Not to mention the cone was unlike anything I have tried before, it is considered similar to langue de chat, which I have not heard of before but it tasted phenomenal. After eating the ice cream we walked around Dotonbori for a while and made our way to find some sort of sit down place to chill and hangout for a bit.

We first walked into a reptile cafe, which in theory looked pretty cool, as the entire store was filled with tons of different reptiles, ranging from green anacondas, to iguanas, to pythons and so much more. They also had a wild assortment of items on the menu with the likes of tarantulas, emu, raven, and gecko meat. I was not feeling very adventurous and it cost ¥1000 to get in, on top of having to pay another ¥1000 for a required drink it did not seem worth it to us so we turned around to find somewhere else. Once back on the street we saw an interesting looking cafe which had gothic looking girls as the bartenders/employees. This was interesting and we walked all the way here for the reptile place just to be let down that we decided to check out the goth cafe. This was a decently fun experience, and much better than the previous maid cafe that I went to, which got a bit weird when they referred to us guys as "Master". Though here they did not really do any of that and it was more just like extra friendly bartenders who chatted with you the whole time. The language barrier was a bit of a hurdle but they were more than happy to try and figure it out and I was actually surprised by how far I have come in my confidence level with speaking Japanese, as I was able to hold a decent conversation with them. It was also nothing that a little google translate couldn't help, and it is always fun interacting with Japanese locals.

After the cafe, we made our way back to the train station and headed back to Kyoto. Once back in Kyoto we grabbed some Gyudon for a late night snack and then ran over to Round one for some Maimai before they closed. That pretty much concludes my night, sorry for the long blog post today was very busy!

HMV&BOOKS SHINSAIBASH
King-Ohger Exhibition.
I went 18 & 20. Basically I went three times lol because 20 they added in Racules red outfit & Suzume outfit plus their rings. (They basically squeeze it with Racules’s stuff plus his blue outfit) whatever is shown is almost what seen on the articles that had picture along with video that each of them choose a prop they want to showcase.
Honestly it was so smallll the layout was bad to me. I drew it from memory & I couldn’t take video or picture with expectations of the suits. It the same like the pop up in Osaka Umeda that time. Jeramie was like left and right so like left was his hammock & right was his video & items.
As the video at the end was long and a lot of people want to watch so it sort of block Kaguragi’s side plus the AR
Yuzuyan-San (Rita) came in morning on 20 to sign at the entrance so yeah got that picture. The goods were also small & a bit in the way of the entrance. (Can see SNS for photo) Jeramie’s stickers sold out on 20. The badge, stickers & acrylic card are at the counter.
Although 1,000yen I can’t say much lol. The poster I think they brought it over from Shibuya one that why have all their signature? (Taisei-San is hard to see because he sign at black of his coat 😂

Sky Garden
After an exhausting day at Universal Studios Japan, bleachpanda and I kept up the momentum by using our last day in Osaka to visit several popular sites in and around the biggest city in the Kansai region. This meant paying a visit to Namba Yasaka shrine bright and early in the morning. Well, technically, it was after 9 AM but after the early start yesterday and the considerable step count bleachpanda and I accrued the day before, I thought it best to give my faithful companion a bit more of a break.
Namba Yasaka shrine is a Shinto shrine that's about a ten minute walk from Namba station. It's known for its very distinctive lion head-shaped buildings and by the time bleachpanda and I arrived, there was already a throng of tourists taking photos of the fierce lion head.
Bleachpanda and I didn't stay long, though. After taking a few snaps of the shrine and skimming through the charms on offer, we headed back to Namba station and took the Midosuji line up to Umeda again. However, unlike the day before, we would not be transferring to Universal City station. Rather, we headed out to the Umeda Sky Building, a two-tower mixed-use skyscaper that had its own observation deck, the Kuchu Teien Observatory.
But my, what a unique design!
The building was originally conceived in 1988 as the "City of Air" project, and was envisioned to have four interconnected towers. However, due to the Japan economic bubble of the 1980s, the plan was scuppered and only two towers were constructed - linked, still, by a sky deck. This sky desk was built on the ground and lifted up through the use of hydraulic elevators.
While one does wonder what Umeda Sky Building would have looked like if it still had four towers, the building we got was still an impressive spectacle.
Once bleachpanda and I reached the top, we were afforded a wide view of Osaka given the excellent weather. It was such a grand view, even bleachpanda was able to appreciate it although she was hankering to start shopping.
After coming down from the skyscraper, bleachpanda and I headed back to Osaka Station and Lucia 100 to visit the Disney Store there. What surprised me, as the two of us were looking at the merchandise, was bleachpanda actually buying a cute mini plushie of Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore. This was despite telling me she hated Disney.
Well, hate is too strong a word. Bleachpanda just never saw the appeal of Disney, especially when it came to the princesses. And true, much of the marketing is focused on fairy tale stories about a princesses finding their one true love BUT there's been a lot of experimental works as well! Look no further than Atlantis: The Lost Empire or Emperor's New Groove! Or, in this case, Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.
I, on the other hand, couldn't resist the very cute tsum tsums and even got persuaded to buy an Easter-themed Stitch doll! And I don't even typically buy plushies on the regular! But this was Disney, and even though there weren't many things in relation to Star Wars or Marvel, I was in heaven!
Heaven, too, might be too strong a word. I was disappointed a little by the selection available but given the Disney 100 pop-up stores in Australia didn't have many options, the Disney stores here in Japan were far superior and catered a little more to my tastes.
Once I shelled out far too much for Disney merchandise (which was then put into a Duty-Free bag I couldn't open and which also had far too much air in it), I slowly led bleachpanda to the Pokemon Center nearby.
Little did I know there was also a Nintendo Store, Capcom Store and Mugiwara store all nearby. Suffice it to say, many things were purchased before we managed to break free and head to Animate - a 12 minute walk away with several bags full of shopping.
Unfortunately, once we arrived, there was naught for bleachpanda to buy, although I did pick up quite a few goodies for my own personal use. Then it was a short trek to a second Disney store, with a short stop at a Sanrio store nearby (where bleachpanda spent about 9000 Yen on things she thought were cute) before we had a look at the Jump and Marvel store also located within the same department store.
By the end of the day, the two of us were laden down by shopping bags. Despite all the shopping we'd done, bleachpanda still wanted to check out the local Don Quijote at Dotonbori again where she bought several snacks and skincare products. And though we had hoped to ride the ferris wheel to look out over the canal and the many other shops, it was closed due to the large crowds in the area.

May 25 - Day Trip to Osaka

Sighhh… I went to Osaka again. It was the third time. The first time was for the XG concert, and the second time was for Universal Studios day. At least I’m familiar with the station by now.
Anyways, the day started with us taking the train from Kyoto to Osaka. It took about an hour as always. From the station, it was a short walk to the first location of the day, which was the Umeda Sky Building. I actually saw this building before during one of my previous train rides to or from Osaka. When we got inside, we waited a bit to get our tickets, and then we took the elevator up. After the elevator, we went on the world’s highest escalator. The floor we arrived to had a good view of Osaka, a store, other smaller sellers, and a café where I bought an Oreo croffle. Then, we went up some stairs to get to the roof of the building. The view got even better! You can see how high the escalators from before were, and you can also see a building with a highway going through it. There was even an area for love locks, which was cute. Once we left the roof, I bought some stuff from the store we passed by earlier, and then we went all the way back down. At the bottom, we ended up breaking for lunch, so my friends and I found a really good Indian restaurant in that maze of restaurants on the lower floor of the building.
Next stop was Osaka Castle. We took the train to the exact station that I went to for the XG concert, so I got to see Osaka-Jo Hall again. We walked past a baseball field and then a bit further, until we arrived at the bridge before the castle. Here, we took our class photo, and then we walked up a steep path to get to the castle. We didn’t actually go inside, but we were able to get pretty close to it as we stayed in this one area near the bottom of the castle. After resting a bit, we went back down and headed to the station.
Our final stop for the day was Dotonbori. Dr. Smith led us from the station to a spot on this bridge right in front of the famous Glico sign. This was when class ended for the day, but my friends and I stayed in the area until dinnertime. We stayed at a nearby Starbucks for a while, and then we went to Book Off. Afterwards, we started looking for a place that made okonomiyaki since Osaka is known for it. Lourdes, Sadia, Skylar, Joey, and I waited at this small okonomiyaki restaurant, and it ended up being so good. Finally, I got tanghulu for the first time, and then we went home.

Scout! Polka Dots — Summer-Colored Youths — Chapter 3
Writer: Umeda Chitose || Season: Summer Character appearances: Ibara, Nagisa
Tetora helps Hinata take care of the fields at school. As thanks, Hinata invites him to go to a summer festival together, and along the way, they meet lots of people...
Proofread by @mankaissengen
Chapters: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8
(—Good grief. Why do I have to be at such a lively place...?)
Translation under the cut
[At the summer festival venue, at the same time]
Nagisa: ... Hey, Ibara, that says tornado potato. It's the first time I'm seeing something like this.
Nagisa: ... What makes it different from french fries? It looks like they're both made with potatoes, so I wonder if there's some fundamental difference between them.
Ibara: They just give it a new name and shape to make it seem unusual. The texture may be different, but the taste will still be the same, won't it?
Ibara: (—Good grief. Why do I have to be at such a lively place...?)
[At the CosPro office, around an hour earlier]
Ibara: (...? A message from Hinata-kun?)
Ibara: ("Looks like there's a summer festival happening today~♪" ... What is this? Would it be okay to respond with "Is that so?")
Ibara: (I've never had a subordinate communicate with me about personal matters before, so I'm confused as to how to respond~?)
Ibara: (... It already shows the 'read' marker. I'll just say I was busy with work and couldn't respond.)
Nagisa: ... Did someone message you?
Ibara: Huh?
Nagisa: ... You looked troubled for a second.
Ibara: So you noticed it even though you were reading a book. The contents are nothing important, though.
Ibara: I just got a message from Hinata-kun saying there's a summer festival happening today. He was even kind enough to attach a photo of the poster.
Nagisa: ... Hehe, so he sent you a message like that. He's such a friendly child.
Nagisa: ... Show me the poster, too.
Ibara: It's not a very interesting photo, but here.
Nagisa: ... "Looks like there's a summer festival happening today~♪" "Do you wanna come, too, Vice President? It'll be a nice break from work!"
Ibara: No- um. Why are you reading the messages out loud?
Nagisa: ... He's asking if you want to go.
Ibara: Can you at least answer my question? Besides, even if he asks if I want to go, I'm not going to a summer festival.
Nagisa: ... Is that so? I want to try going to one.
Ibara: To a summer festival, Your Excellency...?
Ibara: (I don't have any further plans today. I doubt anything will suddenly come up, either. Therefore, I have no reason to stop His Excellency...)
Ibara: I have some work to do here, so I can't accompany you, but if it doesn't clash with your schedule and you want to go, please go ahead.
Ibara: (... And so, I intended to only send His Excellency here, but...)
Ibara: (What choice did I have but to accompany him after he started saying things like "... If I find anything interesting, I'll buy it for you, too"!?)
Ibara: (After all, a summer festival would just be lined with things that pique His Excellency's interest and curiosity!)
Nagisa: ...♪
Ibara: You look like you're enjoying yourself, Your Excellency. Despite that, though, you're simply observing all the stalls lined up and not purchasing anything.
Nagisa: ... Yes. I've learned that summer festivals are fun enough even just to look at.
Nagisa: Though, honestly, there are so many foods here that I've never seen before that I don't know what to buy. I thought of trying each one in order, going from one end to the other.
Ibara: Please don't. Or rather, you can't buy everything with your pocket money.
Nagisa: ... I intended to leave the payment to you. It seemed like you wouldn't be pleased with that, though, so I stopped myself.
Nagisa: ... However, I do want to try eating one thing. Will you choose something, Ibara? I'll obey your instructions.
Ibara: You were the one who said you wanted to come to the summer festival, so you don't need to listen to my instructions now that you're here... however.
Ibara: Taking into account the menu planned for tonight, if I calculate the calories, yes—
Ibara: (Going from the right, the stalls in front of us are selling flour-based food, sweets, flour-based food, fried food, flour-based food... Right, what should we do?)
Ibara: (... Hm? That stall is—)
Nagisa: ... It says "Target Practice". Did that pique your interest?
Ibara: It simply happened to catch my eye. That said, please stop following my gaze.
Nagisa: ... Isn't "target practice", as the name implies, a game of staying on topic? The child over there is holding what looks like a gun.
Ibara: That's a cork gun to shoot at targets with. You use the gun to shoot a cork bullet and hit one of the prizes lined up at the back of the stall.
Ibara: If you can knock over or shoot down one of the prizes, you win it... Well, it's an attraction commonly seen at festivals and temple fairs.
Nagisa: ... That sounds like fun. I'd like to give it a try before we get our hands full buying food.

Nagisa: ... You're serious about this, Ibara. Do you actually enjoy target practice? You seem familiar with how to handle the gun, too. I wonder if you have experience with it.
Ibara: No, this is my first time doing this kind of target shooting. I actually have experience with real marksmanship training.

Ibara: However, this is you we're talking about, Your Excellency. I am certain you will win some kind of prize before you run out of cork bullets.
Nagisa: ... You seem very confident in that. So you seriously intend to knock over that large prize.
Ibara: As long as I knock it down in the end, it's my victory. If I don't get it with the first shot, I'll just correct my second and bring it down for good.
Ibara: When it comes to marksmanship... no. When it comes to target practice, I won't lose to you, either, Your Excellency.

"Oddly enough, I feel like I'm the one looking forward to "Idol Nito Nazuna's" pamphlet the most…♪"
← Previous ✧ Directory
Season: Autumn
Location: Training Room
A few days later.
Nazuna: One, two, three, four...
(I decided to consult with Kuro-chin and Chiaki-chin and work on a training program that's likely to show results even in a short span of time.)
(It's been a few days of training, but I still don't feel any changes in my body or muscles...)
(Though, it does feel a bit easier compared to the first day.)
(They say there's strength in perseverance. I'll keep working hard for the "Feature Live".)
...? Just now, is there anyone at the door—
Nazuna: Huh, it's Anzu.
Ahaha, it's pretty rare to see you wearing a jersey inside the ES building ♪
Since you're dressed like that, did you come here to train too, Anzu?
...I see. You've been so busy lately that you've been unable to do your daily exercise routine, so you came to the training room today.
Me? I'm training for the "Feature Live". I'm in the middle of stretching.
Eh...? When you ask me why I'm training, it's kinda hard for me to answer...
We discussed this in the office, right? About the performance and fitness.
After the meeting, I told everyone in Ra*bits that I was gonna do the "Feature Live"...
They're so happy and looking forward to it, they're even more excited about the show than I am about being on stage.
For my juniors and fans who're looking forward to seeing me, I feel more determined about preparing for the show and delivering a perfect stage, erasing all uncertainties.
In the unlikely event that it turns out mediocre... Whether it's because I had a hiatus, or because I'll be standing on stage alone, none of it's an excuse.
I wanna gain strength, build my muscles, and give it my all. I wanna show everyone the best performance I can do.
That's why I'm training on my own accord.
...Though I mean, instead of just talking about being enthusiastic, I should be moving my body. Since we're here, let's talk about it while exercising together ♪

Fufu. I'm happy that you're putting even more effort into it, but if you get too busy, you might miss your daily exercises again~♪
...While we're here, can I ask you a question about the pamphlet shoot?
During my chat with the Ra*bits members, Tomo-chin mentioned it, and it caught my attention.
As a member of a unit, it's not every day you get a pamphlet that only you are featured in.
I felt it was a precious opportunity, and I wanted to make the pamphlet as good as possible in my own way.
I think I'm a bit overzealous, but...
I wanted to ask you again what kind of pamphlet you want for the "Feature Live."
...Hm, hm. You want it to be full of "good moments" of idols, huh?
To showcase each idol at their best, you want to capture expressions and moments that aren't often seen on stage...
Ohh, so, when you were talking with Kuro-chin, that's why you thought it might be a good idea to take a picture of me doing muscle training!
It's true that I don't look like that on stage. For my fans, it might be a face they've never seen before.
No, you don't need to say, "I'm sorry I didn't explain myself well enough".
After all, I have to listen to what the producer is thinking~
If that's the case... I'd like it to be something a bit more stylish. Having photos of me in motion would definitely be a plus ♪
"What kind of pictures do you want, if any?" ...Hmm~
I dunno what kinda figure or expression is good for me. I'm not used to being photographed like Izumi-chin and Arashi-chin.
I'd like to come up with ideas for it, but they might not come to me right away. If I keep flexing like this, my mind could become more adaptable. I wonder if I'll be able to come up with something.
Hm? You say it's okay to convey the image of myself I want through the pamphlet and the live?
......
Anzu, once the training is over, there's something I'd like to ask you...
Location: Break Room
Nazuna: I initially just wanted to chat a bit, so I'm sorry for getting you involved in work.
But thanks to Anzu's suggestions for locations, I'm starting to have a clearer vision of what I want.
Turns out, there are plenty of great spots within reasonable driving distance from ES. No need to go too far...
Well, I didn't expect so many suitable places for shooting. I'm so amazed I'm practically lost in deciding where to go ♪
Oh, sorry. I shouldn't have taken over your computer.
Anzu, if you've got your drink, why not take a seat here?
After a good workout, let's take it easy... ♪
...Mm, what is it? You wanna know why I wanted to shoot outdoors?
Well~ How should I put it? When you said to me, "It's okay to convey the image of yourself you want through this live..."
I thought, "it'd be good to show that I'm an energetic idol!"
I've had a hiatus from my idol activities, so coming back, I wanted to say, "Look at me, singing and dancing with a smile!"
The people around me are probably more worried and concerned about me than I think.
That's why. I thought that some people might feel relieved if they saw me perform on stage by myself this time.
I planned to approach it as if I'm insisting, "I'm doing this as an idol!" with so much fun, brightness, happiness, and energy.
I wanted to show that kind of image in the pamphlet, so I requested to be photographed outdoors ♪
Running and frolicking in the fields while basking in the sunlight... I'm gonna show off my lively side...☆
And this way, I can also move my body... mentioning it seems like an afterthought, but what I told you just now are my feelings. How about it?
You chose me because you can capture my natural expressions?
I'm glad~ When Anzu gives her stamp of approval, it puts me at ease ♪
Nazuna: You'll be coming along to the shooting too, right? I'll move my body as if I'm playing to my heart's content, so I hope you'll snap lots of pictures.
I wonder what kind of expression of mine will be captured? Perhaps, the me on stage is slightly different after all.
Oddly enough, I feel like I'm the one looking forward to "Idol Nito Nazuna's" pamphlet the most...♪

Yuzuka Rei Interview (Nikkei Woman Feb 2020 - Yuzuka Rei Special Issue)
A long Interview Rei did with “Nikkei Woman” on her (then) upcoming debut as Top Star in February 2020. The magazine is aimed at career women, so the interview asks questions about the pressures of Takarazuka, her career path, as well as a “this or that” quickfire section on her daily habits. I have included scans of the photo shoot too please excuse the washi tape I have stuck on one of them
Enjoy!

Yuzuka Rei, the new Top Star of the Takarazuka Revue’s Flower Troupe: A Big Analysis into the girl who continues to shine!
Get to the heart of the Top Star who, equipped with clever brains and stunning appearance, captures the eyes of her audience, and explore the reason she shines so bright.
“In 2019 I struggled, suffered and over thought. And so, in 2020 I want to pursue my ideal ‘image’”
Yuzuka Rei’s career path and 2020 At the end of 2019 Yuzuka Rei took over as Top Star, and in 2020 she will make her official debut as the lead of the new flower troupe. We listened to her talk about what the turning points in her career have been, and asked her about her determination going forward.
Within the Takarazuka Revue’s 5 troupes, the flower troupe is the company's oldest. Yuzuka Rei became that troupes newest top star at the end of last year.
“2019 was a year of a lot of changes within myself. Basically, before then I had thought that I wasn’t the type that liked to think pessimistically. But, unusually for me, I found I was wallowing in my pain and overthinking, it was a dark year in my Takarazuka life. But without that experience, I think I would have been indifferent to what things were important to me and what things I was am aiming for.”
Yuzuka goes on to say that the play that changed her the most was her starring role in “Hana Yori Dango” (Also known in English: Boys Over Flowers).
“There were many junior actors in that show, so I felt a sense of the responsibility that was ahead of me as the future top star. And as the original work it was based on is so famous, we had a lot of press coverage for the show, and I became almost crushed by the the pressure. But with that production I noticed how when everyone respects each other and works hard to create a good show, an incredible chemical reaction takes place. It didn’t matter whether we were seniors or juniors, or what role we had, a strong bond was born between us all. I think it was then that I realised what the most important part of creating a play actually was. Each cast member stood on stage with pride, and backstage we were all beaming with honest smiling faces. When we are happy in our hearts, it affects the audience too. The whole theatre is wrapped in happiness and an uplifting warmth. Ahh I know now that this is the kind of “image” I want to be surrounded by in my life.”

After a year of solid learning, she begins 2020 as Top Star.
“What I want to inherit from (predecessor) Asumi (Rio) is her character. Due to her influence the whole troupes awareness of their character has changed. Also something that I learnt from her was how to face my weaknesses and fight without running away. I think I would like to carry that lesson with me in my heart”

The Turning Points Of Yuzuka’s Career

November - First lead in a national tour with “Melancholic Gigalo” and “Exciter!! 2018″ 2019 June - Starred in “Hana Yori Dango” at the TBS Akasaka Act Theatre TURNING POINT 2 - During the days that I felt almost crushed under the pressure of the original works huge reputation, I learnt what would become fundamental to my future

November - After the 25th, succeeded Asumi Rio as the new top star of the flower troupe 2020 January - Starred in the dance concert “Dance Olympia” at the Tokyo International Forum March - Will make her debut at the Takarazuka Grand Theatre with top musumeyaku Hana Yuuki as the new Top Combi in “Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern” (RIP this didn’t happen till July because of Corona Virus caused delays)

The mindset of someone who keeps challenging herself: How Yuzuka Rei prepares her heart and mind
Within theatre, in order to continue to present an unwavering performance of high quality, one must find a method to train their mind. What is the trick to Yuzuka’s strong mindset?
The secret to Yuzuka’s unwavering strength is in the habit of honing her “centre”.
Q. How do you display such natural power without being nervous? A. I’m a very nervous person but, once I have admitted to being nervous, my mind and body become one and the power those nerves once had is lifted, and it becomes easy. When I think about trying not to be nervous when I already am, my body and mind separate and I become unable to do anything. So, if I notice the fact that I am nervous, I affirm to myself, saying something like “It’s just that there are many people in front of me, my feelings are understandable, it can’t be helped”. And then this strange power is lifted and it becomes easy, I can do what I do, and become who I need to become.
Q. At times when you are feeling down after failure, what is your pick-me-up method? A. I have now learnt that I am able to recover faster once I become aware of what I should do next, rather than focusing on the failure itself. Before, I used to drag myself down a lot by thinking “Ahhh I did that!” But now, I realise that thinking about what I should do next in order to recover is important. So I find I recover faster by focussing on the comeback method rather than the failure itself.
Q. Who are the people or what are the words that have influenced your way of thinking? A. I wonder...Maybe in the end its only my own experience that has given me the inspiration that my heart needs to feel motivated. There have been times where I have received encouragement from my great senpais at Takarazuka, and other times where popular sayings from around the world have been helpful. But really, what has inspired me to the core has been my own experience and own feelings. That’s the main energy that drives me forward.
Q. Do you care about the reviews written about you? What about your popularity? A. If I said I didn’t, that would be a lie. Still, in order to aim for a higher quality performance, I make sure to not get pulled in by reviews, and I stand on stage with pride every day. Usually, how I felt the performance went matches the reviews written. So inevitably, when the review is bad I fall into self loathing. But so that me and my fellow actors don’t get stuck in these feelings we switch our way of thinking. We aim to do better everyday and look toward creating something more polished and sophisticated. We have accepted our failures within ourselves and make a point to continue to stand on stage everyday with pride.
Q. When you hit a wall, who do you call on for help? A. I’m not very good at asking people for help. I learn what I need to do by thinking objectively about it without depending on others or running away. By nature I’m not very good at relying on people, so instead I think to myself “I should know what to do if I think objectively about what needs to be done”. I have a lot of role models around me, so rather than listening and learning, I often learn by observing how they approach things.

The 12 Habits that make Yuzuka Rei
Yuzuka’s tips for working woman on making a fresh start!
If you had to choose one, which group would you be in?
Small daily habits, likes and dislikes all come together to create the Yuzuka Rei we see today. From these 12 questions we will dig deeper into the reason she shines.
1. Do you or don’t you set new years goals? Rather than say I don’t set them, I'm in the group that sets them but doesn’t continue with them. In various situations I get asked about my new years goals, so I give answers. However, my current situation continues to change so I don’t really tend to continue pursuing the goals I set in the new year.
2. For schedule management are you a diary or a smart phone person? I’m a diary person! I like to write in my own words. Apart from using the “Takarazuka scheduler” app to check the performance schedule, I like to plan my month as a double page spread on diary paper, written in black pen. I don’t use coloured pens or stickers.
3. Are you fast or slow at learning your script? Reading is something I love so I think I’m fast? Most scripts, after a couple of reads I can remember it, regardless of whether it has a lot of terminology or not, so I think I’m quite fast!
4. Do you or do you not eat breakfast? I eat breakfast! When I’m performing I eat just before the 11am curtain call. Once the curtain rises I don’t have time to eat for 3 hours, and eating in the morning at home makes me hungry at an awkward time which disrupts my performance. So, with my stomach in mind I learnt that eating just before the show is best. Make sure to always eat your rice!
5. Which do you do every day? Stretches or muscle training? I stretch. When I’m onstage my muscles are worked hard anyway, so I never have to do muscle training. I stretch for about 15 minutes before a show starts and then if I have time before bed, I stretch my hips, thighs, soles of my feet etc.
6. Which do you fuss over the most when applying your stage make up? Your eyes or your base? Recently, its been my base makeup. There was a time when I was very particular about my eyes and eyebrows, but now its the base for my skin that I fuss over. When the base is smooth then the other makeup products stick easier, so how well the base sticks to the skin is the most important thing.
7. Are you aware of what's popular? Or are you uninterested? I’m completely indifferent to trends. Even if I get told by people “This is very popular!” I don’t have much interest, to the extent that I keep my distance from the things that are super popular.
8. Which do you like most? Fashionable clothes, or home interior? I like clothes. But interior is my current obsession! I want to create a space with all the things I like, recently I bought a light blue sofa and a grey tv stand. I discovered that by just replacing these two things, the atmosphere of the room changed and I became able to enjoy my time at home more.
9. When it comes to tidying up and keeping tidy, are you good or bad? To say I am I good at it would be the wrong choice of words... For me, tidying and cleaning to make a comfortable space is the best way to feel refreshed. But when my mind is busy, and I don’t have the time to clean, my home gets ruined, so I think there's a link between how tidy my home is and my current mentality.
10. On days off are you an active person or an indoor person? I’m both. I also like to do short trips overseas. So that I can rest my body, I stay home during performance period. But on my 5 day holidays I’ve done things like go to London or New York by myself. Travelling is the time that I get to nourish “my real self”. Putting yourself in a place you don’t know is very exciting.
11. For daily news/info do you use the TV or the internet? I like my quiet time so I tend to just go online. Recently I don’t think I’ve been watching TV. I have a job where everyday, whether its in rehearsal or on stage, I’m surrounded by music, so even when I’m at home I'm tired of listening to sound. On my phone I check news websites and things.
12. Do you like to read books or manga? Since I was a child I’ve always like both! My parents love books , and I learnt how entertaining they are from the books “Freezing Point” and “Ryouma Goes”. But it was my brothers influence that got me reading manga with “Weekly shonen jump” as well. Even now, taking the time to read a book is a blissful experience.

One day I wanna go just on a trip through japan- it's like my dream vacation
It has jsut the mix of large cities and gorgeous nature ti be super appealing as a potential foreign vacation spit for me
My dream is also travel around Japan someday a lot! Start from some point and go south to Okinawa through East coast and up to Hokkaido through West coast and back the starting point :3 Only if my health allows such a trip, of course, and finances. Money can be always saved, health is other issue.
There are lots of lovely and very quiet streets and neighborhoods even close by the busiest street in Japan. My Japanese friend lives just a few train/metro stop away from Osaka Castle and it takes maybe 20minutes to go to Umeda and Namba, the busiest areas of Osaka, yet her own neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. Barely anyone is out anymore at 9pm. I've went out to walk many times at late night because it's so peaceful. And, mind you, she lives next to a big JR station and it's still quiet neighborhood.
I enjoy the nature myself, too. I always try to visit Nara or at least go to walk to the parks (and admire mountains at the distance). Here are some photos I took in one trip from Nara.
My soul is never at ease anywhere else like it is in Japan. That land heals me so much.

2021.04.06 a talk event at Meguro Rock-May-Kan film screening at Namba Hatch with Kyo and Shinya - PART 1 Report by とあ on twitter (topics are not reported in order things happened, I mostly followed the order they posted, 1st and 2nd session bits are mixed together) my comments go in (*…)
Shinya entered the stage in black hoodie, both hands in his pockets. He also had hands in the pockets when he left the stage. Came with a drink.
Kyo came on stage with his arms crossed. He drank some water soon after sitting down, I thought he started to play with the flyer but he made an airplane from it. Q “To Die. Please tell us the secret of your youth.” Kyo and Shinya face each other and laugh. Kyo: Is it okay to imagine what Die is doing? I said that I quit McDonalds, right? Die also said he hasn’t had McD in years. Fujieda: He also said he doesn’t eat ramen. Kyo: and he doesn’t eat spicy food. Kyo: Now he’s just eating, like tofu? Tofu or soybeans. Shinya: he researched and knows a lot. Even when going on a diet in the past he found a good plan. During the rapid question time they also answered another one for Die “I bought Die’s model guitar. Please tell me how can I get better” when reading Kyo answered “tooth guitar”. I think it was when reading about this guitar? Kyo started laughing then Fujieda started laughing and for a bit they both faced each other laughing.
“Coffee” Kyo: I drink it black. Even at home. Using beans from Starbucks. I drink 1~3 cups a day. Fujieda: Kaldi’s coffee is also great. They have many types. Kyo: If you say that they have many different types you have to try them to compare. You don’t say this even though you didn’t drink them, right? Fujieda: I tried quite a lot. There’s different one for each season. Now they sell sakura blend etc. Kyo: Ah, then it’s fine. If you drank it. Shinya: some years back I bought Nespresso coffee maker but I’ve only used it for 2 weeks. It’s still in my house. Kyo (suddenly looking at Shinya): gimme! (くれ!) Shinya: o, okay. Kyo (turning to Fujieda looking happy): he said okay! Kyo: Then I will give you a coupon to get that right side curl fixed. it caught my eye that looking from here that just the right side of your hair has this weird curl. Shinya: No, it’s not weird... Kyo: But I will give you a voucher to get that fixed.
“What’s your routine before the show?” Both of them don’t have one Kyo: Does anyone have? Fujieda: Toshiya is doing muscle training. Kyo: Ah... and doesn’t Die move around a lot? Shinya: He does. Until the start he’s very restless. Kyo: Right? Even when we all gather one is always going back and forth. “Your favourite takoyaki” Shinya: I don’t care. Even though I’m from Osaka I don’t really eat takoyaki. It is said that every household in Kansai will have a takoyaki machine but we didn’t. In the 20 years I lived there I only had like 5 octopus balls. Kyo: That time when you were wearing that long earring? You only had 5? So what type? Shinya: the one that is crispy outside and soft inside
“A difficult song” Shinya: Rinkaku. Because I need to keep kicking. It’s faster than Zan. The drum is nice but it totally kills my leg. Kyo: DIFFERENT SENSE as I said before. I imagined a dialogue as it’s a heavy song when I made it, but when I didn’t get any response, I ended up having to sing all of it by myself so it’s really tiring. I tried control my breathing when swimming but I can’t. Kyo: So in the end it’s like swimming the whole thing without breathing. I was told by Kaoru to try pointing the mic [at fans], but all I get is ‘eh right now?’ (gestures pointing with his right arm) I get ‘eh here?’ The people in front of me try to respond, but the people on the sides (again points with his right arm) go ’eh? Eh? Here? (agitated) so I gave up. I don’t mind if it’s the wrong pitch, just put your feelings into it.
Kyo: I started playing Monster Hunter. On Switch. Takabayashi: I’m also playing. Kyo: Then let’s play together! (big grin) Takabayashi: Okay. Shinya: I bought it on the day DS got released, but I couldn’t understand the objective of the game after playing for a day so I didn’t feel like playing anymore. Kyo: So you just started playing from zero by yourself? No one helped you saying what to do? Shinya: Yup. Kyo: If you told me I’d have helped you. Shinya: So in the end what happens? What is the goal? Kyo: there’s none. Shinya: What? Kyo: You just continue getting your level up. Shinya: And for how long do you continue to play? Kyo: There are people who continue playing until the next game comes out. Shinya: Woah...
"What weapons you're using in Monster Hunter" Kyo: I'm using a bow. It might seem it's because it's huge, but I can attack from a distance and avoid being found. Make a shot from a distance, if you're found out you can run away. Direct confrontation is scary.
“During the Osaka period what studio did you use?” Kyo: Was it in Umeda? Shinya: Yup. Fujieda: What was the name? Kyo: I don’t remember. Do you? Shinya: Yes. It was M4 www.m4-studio.com Kyo: That’s some memory. Shinya: I booked it. I confirmed the date with 4 of you and called them. We made Karma and Aoi Tsuki there.
“About Oboro teaser” Kyo: Could you see me? I only watched it on my phone so couldn’t tell what was what.
“Rock-May-KanGIG" Shinya: there were many problems... no one around me [to help]. When my ear monitor fell out I had to fix it myself. And I made this rookie mistake of not pressing record on camera... Kyo: We don’t remember things like that. Kyo: Do you remember what you ate a month ago? You don’t right? It’s the same. You might remember that the main dish was shrimp but you won’t remember sides. “About SOGAI in May” Kyo: something that will happen in a month...Do you think about what you will be eating in a month? Fujieda: But I think many fans are looking forward to it. Kyo: I guess, but that’s because they’re going to enjoy the food. From the side of people who will be cooking you only start preparing about a week before, no? Fujieda: So you will start feeling motivated a week before... Kyo: Nope. Fujieda: Shinya, do you think this analogy works? Shinya: After hearing it I think so.
“What are some food combinations that you find just wrong?” (*from other twitter reports the question had example like pineapple in sweet sour pork etc) Shinya: as long as there’s no foods I dislike anything is okay. Kyo: I don’t have any food like that, but but I hate when people mix different sports brands. Wearing adidas with Nike shoes and so on. When I see someone like that I want to tell them ‘could you not?’
“What expensive item have you bought recently?”
Shinya: I’ve already answered this earlier. A camera. The camera itself was 40k and lens was 20k yen. Kyo: What do you use the camera for? Shinya: For recording and so on. Kyo: What kind of [recording]? Shinya: For youtube or Haiiro. Kyo: Isn’t iPhone good enough for that? Kyo: When I’m taking a photo I just pass my iPhone and ask someone. Fujieda: I was given a camera for taking photos, but after about 15 minutes I was told to use iPhone in the end. Kyo: Do you know what was different? Fujieda: I didn’t. Kyo: (*going back to the main question) an expensive item... Nike and Garcons sneakers I guess. They were about 20k yen. (*Pegasus?) I’m drinking coffee while looking at the sneakers.
“Do you prefer indoor or outdoor festivals?” Shinya: If it’s daytime then indoor. It would be too bright outdoor in daytime. Kyo: I hate insects so indoor. Weren’t there so many insects when you had plants? Fujieda: Speaking of insects, don't they get into your mouth when you ride a bike? Kyo: You ride a bike with an open mouth? Silly kid. Fujieda: Instead of having open mouth, it's like there's suddenly an insect in your mouth, when it crashes into you. Kyo: Riding a bike with an open mouth is silly. Why, are you singing? Fujieda: Sometimes I do, actually. Kyo: If you're singing while riding that's okay, if you just have your mouth open while riding that's silly.
"About SOGAI in May" Shinya: We're working on the setlist, it will be great. Kyo: That's why I don't want you to ask me about a concert in a month. Don't ask me questions about concerts next year. I won't answer.
"What's a good place in Hirakata?" Shinya: Hira pa (Hirakata Park) and TSUTAYA, right? TSUTAYA is where I was born. Fujiefa: Eh? Really? I didn't know. Kyo: if in Tokyo you say Hirapa no one will understand Kyo: Do you know? (looks at Shinya) when you just come in and there's a place with dogs Shinya: Like real dogs? Kyo: Yeah. There are about 20 dogs, but all are so tired. Lifeless as if they were abused. Of course they weren't abused, but it's a place where you can spend some time with dogs but they are so tired, so lifeless and tired that it's almost a shame they are kept there. (*I think he's talking about Doubutsu Hug Hug Town)
"What hotel facilities do you find exciting?" Shinya: ...for example? Fujieda: ehm... Kyo: This is not something exciting, but. You know in a shower? When you don't know if you're supposed to move the handle up or down? Maybe this way? And then when you move it the water suddenly comes out from above! (Shinya nods) Fujieda: That's criminal! Was it hot? Kyo: First water came out, but when I turned the handle the water suddenly poured from above, I got totally soaked. How do you use that? Shinya: there are some places where water comes out in 3 places instead of 2. Fujieda: Criminal! Fujieda: Anything exciting? Shinya: Like? Fujieda: Like a big tv. Shinya: I don't watch TV. Dujieda: That's true, you don't. How about a very good pillow? Shinya: I don't care. Kyo: And the shower [head]! Just from one hole the water goes in a strange direction, there's nothing stuck there, just water, but just this one spot. What's that about? (Shinya continued to nod while smiling)
"To Shinya. What time did you wake up today?" Shinya: Around 1. At night. Fujieda: What time did you go to bed? Shinya: I think about 10pm. Fujieda: You almost didn't sleep at all. Kyo: Aren't you an old man now! (*🤣🤣🤣🤣)
"What toothpaste and toothbrush are you using?" Kyo: Any toothpaste is okay, but I prefer small toothbruses. Because I have very complex teeth. Like a maze. You get lost there. That's why I choose a tothbrush with a small head, has good reach. Shinya: I'm using a toothpaste from overseas with an M, any brush is okay for me. But I use one with water coming out of it. Fujieda: Is it electric? Shinya: Yes. Fujieda: Is it painful? Shinya: Well sometimes it gets a bit bloody. Kyo: You're really into it (laughing) to keep using it even if you're bleeding.
Kyo is watching The world unknown to Matsuko every week (depends on the episode but it's interesting), when finishing the 2nd sessiin event Shinya said 'go straight home and from 8:57 watch The world unknown to Matsuko'. It already started and it seems [dir] appeared there.
"Where do you want to tour besides Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka?" Shinya: Somewhere we still haven't been to... where was it? Takabayashi: ehm... Shimane, Wakayama, Saga. Shinya: There. Kyo: Kyoto. Kyoto is good. Kyoto is the best. Even now I'd love to [have an event] in Kyoto instead. Kyoto is the best or, I want to become Kyoto.
"What animals do you like in the zoo?" Kyo: ehm... sheep I guess. I want to look at them or hold them. Shinya: Animals you don't see in everyday life like giraffes, elephants or lions.
"What do you like in an amusement park?" Kyo: I guess the haunted house? Yeah, haunted house. It's okay when people try to scare me. It's not scary. I'm laughing all the time. Fujieda: So you can enjoy FujiQ no problem? Kyo: I haven't been, but I think it's fine? I would be fine bringing a sheep with me I guess? Going in while stroking the fluffy sheep. Shinya: Ferris Wheel. Fujieda: How about the thrilling ones? Shinya: I don't like them. Fujieda: So Ferris Wheels for Shinya, understood.
"About shooting Oboro PV" Shinya: It was tough. Kyo: You say that? Say that to ME?? Shinya: Well, you were shooting naked. The green stuff got all over my clothes and cleaning that took ages. Kyo: Ah, I guess. But you could've gotten it dry cleaned, no? Shinya: It was a fabric that cannot be dry cleaned. I couldn't remove it in the end so I gave it to Fujieda. Kyo: You did? You got it? Fujieda: Yeah, I passed it to the person who designed the costume. Kyo: I see... Shinya: And the floor was very cold. Kyo: You say that?!?!?! Fujieda: Were you okay, Kyo? Kyo: Yeah... I'm a pro in the end. Fujieda: Oh (claps) Kyo: Are you mocking me? Looking down on me? Fujieda: No! Not at all! I clapped because I think that's great! Kyo: No, you're defnitely looking down on me. It's the same as the 'whats your salary like?' 'this much' 'oh'.

Photo

My boyfriend is returning from Osaka tomorrow (well, today since we’re *NYC* 13 hours behind Japan, his flight is in less than 4 hours JP time) and these are some of the pictures he sent me from his trip.
Cute cars, lots of cute cars in Japan. Saw a very tall man getting out of his car (during a video call) with a cute rabbit decal on the front of his car.
2nd photo is an ancient grave, he told me it might be as old as Amaterasu (Goddess of Japan) which dates back at least 1000 years.
3rd pic is a danchi (danchi is public housing), some of the buildings have cute art on them like this one.
4th is a bakery called Shalman (I think that’s how it’s spelled in romaji), he said the pastries were really good & prices are cheap. I told him he should leave a Yelp review when he gets back.
Next pic is next door to the bakery, I think it’s called Coco Full. “Cookie & Waffle” caught my eye so I asked him to take a pic for me :P
Next is Hanshin Department Store in Umeda, Umeda is a huge commercial area in Osaka.
And a bento (lunch box) meal he had with his family.
I got to meet & talk with his family, well everyone except his brother & aunt. He only saw his brother once in the 3 weeks he was there because his brother only has one day off a week.
His dad wants me to come visit but a flight to Osaka is TWICE as expensive as a Tokyo flight *meaning we both could fly to Tokyo for the price of 1 ticket to Osaka...with money left over*.
The problem is, if he flew to Tokyo he would’ve been required to quarantine at a hotel for at least 3 days, after that he either have to remain in a hotel (paying money) or would have to find transportation from Tokyo to Osaka because people who arrive from outside of Japan can’t use mass transit during quarantine. Osaka is almost 6 hours west of Tokyo so a car rental would’ve been way too expensive.
Another issue is the travel ban but hopefully that ends soon, he’s thinking about returning sometime soon *next year* & if the travel ban is lifted maybe we can both go.
I only have videos of his Kyoto trip (his aunt lives in Kyoto) & a few pics of Kobe where is younger sister lives. I was hoping he would go to Amemura (Amerikamura Village *American Village*) but he didn’t have time.
Will post more pics soon!
