City Hunter trailer released

A trailer has been released for Netflix’s upcoming modern day adaption of City Hunter. Like the manga, it remains set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku. after 84 years netflix finally deigned to upload the final ep of AARO so i can now review it

this is such a hard one to sum up my feelings on bc like on one hand. it's rare to get jdramas that one might describe as "urban fantasy" and the uniqueness there is appreciated. the way these mythological figures' abilities and roles in their stories are translated into the modern day is generally fun to see.

i like the way this show looks - pretty good direction and the colour grading is very nice. sakoda takaya is one of my favorite cute supporting character ossans and he's so cute in this too. i love that banger of a track that plays when something exciting or twisty happens, and i enjoy how insane the developments become at the end when everyone in japan starts [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS].

but it's like... i was personally set up to feel annoyed by this show too. bc i cannot STAND in like a rpg party where every single playable character is a Special Person Bound By Fate To This Cause. if that makes sense to anyone else. like i need someone, even just one, to be Just Some Guy with no destined relation to anything, who is on the quest simply bc they feel strongly about doing so. and AARO does not provide that. i guess you could say the cop guy counts, but he's not a very central character from where i'm sitting. (honestly i may have liked this a lot more if he was the protag.)

and i feel like it's easy to forget with how the Big Events of this drama are backloaded into the last few eps but i'm still hung up on the earlier episodic cases. specifically how not one not two but THREE separate plots revolve around "women be crazy jealous harpies who will commit violent crimes over a man / just don't understand the bond of true love their man has with the younger woman he's cheating on them with." hello?? can we get a post for this show on r/menwritingwomen??

overall: deeply frustrating! i also hate looking at fujiwara tatsuya's face for purely hard to explain shallow reasons and will generally avoid anything he stars in but made a wary exception here and i'm reporting in that he's so boring in this i felt vindicated in my shallowness. could replace that mf with a brick wall in most eps and have the same result
