Well this was a pretty packed chapter of Ichinose, complete with characters actually talking together for once. We get Shiori and Sachie remembering the dream being confirmed, and a bit of an explanation behind Sachie's activities recently. But obviously the big reveal comes at the end when we discover that Sota is actually Tsubasa's older brother.

With the focus on how Kakeru and Minako are strangely cheerful like they've forgotten everything, I'm beginning to theorize that Sota is trying to make the family forget about him. Maybe he died in the accident and this has been a way of trying to help the family move on. Theory still needs some work though, so I might be off base

I need to take a paragraph in this review to marvel at how much Taizan has packed into the past 19 chapters, giving distinct arcs for 3 members of the Ichinose family, establishing a time loop that’s actually a comatose hallucination / dream world, contrasting a depressing, realistic world outside of it.

It’s also impressive to see Taizan5 use the classic technique for page-turn shockers, reminiscent of Junji Ito.

Meanwhile, in the dream world, thing’s are getting super fucking weird (weirder than usual).

Manga First Impression: The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins (Chapter 1 - Spoilers)

Weekly Shonen Jump is set to premiere 4 new series in the magazine over the next month, with the first of them debuting in this week's issue: The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins, written and illustrated by Taizan5, the latest author to migrate from the digital publication of Shonen Jump+ to the main magazine proper (following in the steps of Tatsuki Fujimoto and Yuji Kaku). In Taizan's case, they were responsible for the viral hit Takopi's Original Sin which, for those who haven't read it... how do I put this...

The setup involves the titular Ichinose family, who awaken recovering in a hospital after a serious accident. They're all healthy, buuuuut they all collectively have amnesia and remember nothing about each other but their names and relationships to each other, the story being told from the POV of the family's son Tsubasa.

They start conversing with each other to try and see if they can trigger any sort of recollection, though they mostly just spin false memories to amuse themselves and to try and keep in high spirits. And while Tsubasa's younger sister Shiori has a bleak outlook on the situation, he tries to remain optimistic about things.

...and then the family makes it back to their residence and head to their rooms. Aaaaaaaaand...

Yup, there it is. There's that sudden turn I was expecting from the author of Takopi. Although the chapter does end shortly after this, merely showing us that the family members each discovered something in their rooms that casts doubt on who they are and the relationships they have with each other, leaving a very suspenseful hook for next time.

I'm definitely very intrigued to see where this goes next time, with the amnesia conceit and the graffiti scene making for a strong hook. Additionally, the unique traits of Taizan5's art style are fully intact here, in particular their unique eye for character design as well pained anguished emotional expressions when shit hits the fan. One wonders how this series will shake out, considering that Takopi only ran for about 2 volumes and successful WSJ series are expected to produce... well way more than 2 volumes. Either way, count me in for more!

The moment when Kenta's facade falls is so chilling. He's doing an excellent job making everyone feel sorry for him, but it turns out he's got a really rotten personality. I sympathize with him coming from an abusive family originally, but this is still a pretty rotten way for him to be acting. And now Tsubasa sees that even this found family is far from perfect. We're running out of sins at this point.
