Michelle Vine 

Michelle Vine is an installation, performance, and photo media artist. Her current practice is centred on touch; she aims to bring awareness to this neglected sense, whilst disrupting sight’s hegemonic dominance of the art experience. Previous to this direction, Vine began her artistic career producing works in response to sites of knowledge formation in biological science. She performed embodied scientific and artistic processes in natural history museums and in the field, training herself as an amateur naturalist. More recently she refocused this same analytical approach to both the body and the gallery as sites for investigating sensory knowledge formation, using a phenomenological approach, informed by affect theory and sensory neuroscience.

Vine works with gallery visitors’ tactile sense, and with her own, as a primary material in collaborative art making. A key goal of Vine’s practice is to create playful, positive, embodied art experiences that allow for greater inclusion for audiences of diverse ages and sensory abilities. Her sensual tactile installations incorporate discrete objects and embraceable soft sculptures, building them into ever-evolving tactile recreational playgrounds that tempt the body to touch and rekindle deeper connections to self through the skin.

1. Mix two chemicals to create photo sensitive solution of ‘sensitizer’.

2. Brush, smear, or soak the sensitizer into cotton-based watercolour paper.

3. Create a negative image on a transparency with a laser/inkjet printer or copy machine.

4. Place the negative over the dried, sensitised paper or just place objects on the paper to create a photogram.

5. Expose to UV light.

6. Wash the image in water to develop.

End to end journey is key. Passengers expect more, personalisation is the norm. Trains are more than a transport mode, places to work, rest, interact. 

Aotea Centre - A bespoke bilingual way finding system. Brutalism was part of the buildings heritage. They wanted to understand how the building worked, and what it was used for - theatres, conference centres, accessible wayfinding and signage. All signs had to include bilingual Te Reo and English.

Worked with staff to assist with concept developments.

Hospitality is a core design principle, also incorporate braille and tactile type.

Concerns of legibility and sign standing out in the environment.

Every creative endeavour must start with research. 

Find the insight, the idea is the guiding star, followed by the execution.

The sharper the idea articulation is, the better the outcome.

Base your talk on the size of the room. 

What makes a good brand? Fernando Machado (Burger King) a good client is what makes a good brand. The client who is brave enough to say yes. 

Where do you start? Research. 

e.g. campaign to stop people from walking in-front of trains. To a train driver, it was like a near-death. 

Bernbach - joined a creative team: writer and art director.

Seperate research, thought starters, looking for tidbits and insights, then they cross-pollinate and sit down with what they’ve done - which instantly starts the process. Creative check-in is an important meeting, when ideas get shut down, it’s important to kill your ideas, internal reviews with strategists / suits - idea articulation.

Your muse is a rogue alcoholic, but if you always show up on time, so will it. 

The better you are at selling an idea, the more likely you are to make an idea. Get into acting.

Client feedback, process of briefing directors, and doing directors treatments - their case for what they think, what have they added? Award the job to 1 director, answering client feedback. PPM - pre-production meeting, plan. Shoot is a world in itself. 

Offline - fancy word for edit. Watching someone else make your idea. Client offline, Grade, Online, Client Offline, Sound Mix, then Dispatch. 

When you put an idea out there, you have to keep track of it, document it.

How do you approach a challenge? From a safe distance.

When you’re researching, you’re gathering trees. The solution to a challenge can be obvious once you understand the problem really well.

How do you get over a creative block? 

The conscious mind is like the secretary, the subconscious mind comes up with the ideas, CEO/Director - the door is always shut. Wait for the CEO to write an idea on a piece of paper and slide it under the door. 

Lower stress levels and pressure levels, sleep well, meditate. 

YOU don’t come up with all the ideas, idea supercharges conscious.

Idea is in the brief somewhere, sleep, salmon and avocado are good for the brain,  idea generation, sleep, 2 hours to concept, picked 1 idea.

Workroom, Huntingtower Residence

This is a richly layered family home that connects the interior and exterior, and creates an oasis from the outside world. The brief here for Workroom was to create a family home – a real home – where large open spaces allow for togetherness, but also provide a secluded sense of space and refuge. Every different space in this home tells its own story, unfolding gradually with every little considered detail (of which there are many!).

A collaboration between Doherty Design Studio and Detail 9 Architects, this low-maintenance country weekender for a Melbourne couple sits calmly within the hillside. Looking to the works of 20th-century artist Hans Heysen for inspiration (think Australian gum tree tones of pale blues, bone, and pale terracotta), this contemporary country house blends elegantly into its idyllic bush surrounds.

Matt Woods, Perfect Storm

Known as ‘the concrete bunker’, this sleek Camperdown apartment combines is both lux, and surprisingly utilitarian in its aesthetic. Matt Woods redesigned the inner-city warehouse for a couple seeking a minimalist lifestyle, with an interior to match. Taking inspiration from Brutalist architecture, the backbone of this concept was to create a space that was completely free of clutter and unnecessary decoration. The interior mood is intentionally dark and brooding, balanced by ample natural light flooding the space. Decorative touches are found in American Oak joinery, brass accents and statement lighting.

Brammah Interior Design, Ferndale House

A carefully crafted renovation of a classic 60s Bungalow, this Chatsford home expertly fuses old-world charm with contemporary style. The task for Brammah Interior Design was to create clever solutions to address the functional necessities for the family to gather together, while creating a space that felt inspiring. The result is a home that is richly layered, but not overly fussy – simple design for living, at its most elegant.

Simone Haag, House Poynton

A renovated modernist home is brought to life by owner and stylist Simone Haag, with an emphasis on texture, layers and classic silhouettes to create a warm family environment. The mid-century residence doubles as a showcase of Simone’s nuanced furniture, art and object styling – in her own family home setting.

Chelsea Hing, Yarra Valley House

Set in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, this Aussie beauty with vineyard views was completely overhauled by Chelsea Hing to create more space for a growing family. Limited by retaining the existing building footprint (where possible), the design response was to enclose an internal ground floor garden, doubling the size of the rumpus room, enlarging all the windows and the ground floor and reorienting space for better flow throughout. The palette and materials used here have a refined, yet rustic feel. The perfect contemporary country home!

Olivia Bossy, Freshwater

All neutral tones and soft edges, this light-filled apartment by Olivia Bossy is a chic, contemporary nod to 1970s style. The interior design makes the most of a tiny footprint, where spatial innovations (such as the curved shower) become sculptural solutions. The house is filled with surfaces with a handmade and uneven finish, which gently softens the space.

Sarah Cosentino & Felicity Slattery, Portsea Beach House

A refurbished clifftop residence in Portsea by Sarah Cosentino and Felicity Slattery (Studio Estetea) that pays homage to the Modernist era of the home, and the surrounding coastal context. The mid-century undertones of the original residence informed the design response, and the tactile palette is inspired by the local landscape. Bagged and whitewashed rendered walls, warm timbers and accents of natural stone create a refined but relaxed home.

A cutting-edge family home that incorporates sculptural elements into the design itself, this cosmopolitan project is rich with texture. Anchored by the property’s spectacular views, Dylan Farrell Design worked to bring a sense of warmth and intimacy to the vast open spaces of the original home.

Georgina Jeffries, The Victorian

A playful inner-city Victorian terrace by Georgina Jeffries that pays tribute to the heritage of the property, whilst pushing the boundaries of what is expected in a heritage renovation. This updated 19th-century terrace house plays with the relationship between old and new, and introduces a bold palette including deep sea green walls, a pink chandelier and quirky wallpaper. From the outside – a conventional terrace, from the inside – a unique delight!

Larritt-Evans, Elwood House

A 19th-century home that mixes colour, texture and scale against a gallery-like foundation. This Larritt-Evans designed interior required both restoration and innovation, to redress previous renovations, and create a fresh backdrop for the clients to express their colourful and eclectic personalities. The home strikes the perfect balance between curated and liveable, all achieved within a tight ten-week timeline.

Kate Challis Interiors, Gertrude Street Project

A bold home for a family of creatives by Kate Challis Interiors, which blur the distinction between art and design. The space is particularly inspired by the works of iconic Australian artists Margaret Preston and Valerie Sparks, and their interest in native flora and fauna. At only 3.9 meters wide, this residence packs a colourful punch.

Doherty Design Studio, St Kilda Residence

A revitalised 1920s Californian Bungalow that retains the best bits of the original home, redesigning the rest and keeping colour at the fore. Initially renovated by Kennedy Nolan in 2000, Doherty Design Studio really turn the WOW-factor dial up to the max here, working to complement the existing space rather than overhaul it. Redesigning most areas of the home, as well as curated a bold new collection of lighting, furniture and decorative elements, this home shows unique artistic flair. Bold colour reigns supreme alongside an adventurous medley of materials.

The entire center is decorated with details complementing Fisher & Paykel’s clean, modern aesthetic, each representing a conscious effort to incorporate contemporary New Zealand interior design throughout, allowing visitors to feel comfortable enough to imagine their own homes.

Greeted with an aromatic and soothing cup of New Zealand kawakawa green tea, visitors are invited to browse a curated selection of Fisher & Paykel appliances, each thoughtfully arranged to evoke aspirations of homes where food and socializing unfold with regularity. Solutions on display include modular appliances catering to space conscious urban lifestyles all the way up to enormous double-wide refrigerators suited for the largest of kitchens, alongside the most luxe flush-fit integrated refrigeration solutions designed to blend into kitchen cabinetry inconspicuously.

The most expensive and luxurious kitchens hardly look like kitchens at all today, noting they’ve evolved to become the communal centerpiece of homes, and much of Fisher & Paykel’s design aesthetic serves this trend rather well.

The integrated Columns 30-inch refrigerator and 18-inch freezer fits flush into a wall of cabinetry to minimalist effect.

A freezer control panel is positioned at a height accessible for any user.

Regardless of category, finish, or dimensions, every Fisher & Paykel product shares a design and engineering DNA expressing an appreciation for the tactile and details appreciated over a lifetime of use. Controls and technologies serve the needs of the everyday; dials click confidently with every turn, doors close to a graceful conclusion, and button interfaces offer intuitive access and control without requiring menu diving that often hinders digital display operations of competing brands.

Instead of incorporating the sheen of dazzling displays or apps, Fisher & Paykel invests in features earning appreciation over time.
