A quick character study of Astala Tabris as a teen, and her changing relationship with her mother. The hanging mentioned at the beginning refers to the hanging of one of Adaia Tabris's fellow smugglers, which Astala witnessed with her mother (lotta headcanon material in this one)

On the fourth night after the hanging—that is, as soon as the appropriate time for a wake had passed—her mother was out running the streets again. And Astala couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned in her bed. She tried to find rest, but all the while she listened to every creak of the house, every brush of the wind against its crooked frame. She listened for steps. She listened for the dull roar of a mob.

Finally, she gave up, and climbed out of the bed. She hesitated, wrapped a shawl around herself to ward off the cold. Then she quietly approached her father sitting in front of the hearth.

Her mother could approach her father unheard. But her, he heard her. He smiled when he saw her, and pulled a chair up next to his. She'd long stopped being small enough to share a chair with her father.

"Can't sleep, little one?" he asked.

Astala shook her head, and leaned against him.

Her father wrapped an arm around her, and they both sat in silence, trying to look past the cover of darkness Adaia Tabris had disappeared into.

For as long as Astala could remember, her mother had done this. A few times, Astala had even gone with her, now that she was old enough to do so. And for as long as she could remember, her father had stayed up and waited for her.

"Will Ma come back?"

Her father sighed. "Well, she has always come back."

Astala didn't like that answer one bit. She could feel her father wasn't happy, either.

"What if she gets caught?"

"We can only pray that that doesn't happen, little one." Her father ran a hand over her hair. "I fear-"

He feared. What he feared, Astala never knew. He stopped himself before he could finish the thought.

"I want her to stop doing this", Astala mumbled into the resulting silence and pressed her head against her father's shoulder. "Why does she do this?"

It took her father a while to answer.

"Your mother..." he began, haltingly, "has always loved her freedom. It's important to her to be out, carrying her weapons. Even if..." He took a weary breath. "Even if it puts her in danger."

While Astala mulled this over in silence, her father continued speaking.

"Your mother also cannot stop doing what she thinks is right. It will drive her up the walls, and right now she thinks it's right to go out and work like every other night." Her father shifted, and as Astala looked up at him she found him looking at her with a smile. "You do that as well, you know?"

Astala looked away. Then she shook her head.

"I would never do this."

"My little girl." There was pity in her father's voice, and Astala didn't lean against him as much as he pulled her closer. "Don't be too harsh on your mother. She is trying to do her very best. For all of us."

Astala said nothing, and settled against her father's shoulders once more because she knew it would make him happier than arguing. She stared into the low flames of the hearth, jaw locked and tense, eyes stinging.

both amell and tabris were raised by single fathers. revka amell disappeared some time after 9:11, and if amell is only getting their harrowing in 9:30, they would be very young, maybe not even remember her, so their all memories from before the circle would be only of their father and siblings. comparably, the timeline of when adaia died is weird - she trained tabris in fighting, so they at least had some time together - but last several years it was just cyrion taking care of both tabris and shianni. if tabris is around 20 in 9:30 then possibly most of their teens were just with their father.

in my non-canon main worldstate gareth amell is not a warden, and he is friends with hof tabris, who is also an apostate, so i would love for gareth to find his father (lucas) and perhaps introduce him to cyrion. lucas was living on the run with his kids ever since they left kirkwall, up to the point when the youngest were taken to the circles in orlais, hoping that if they were moving constantly he would protect his mage children from being discovered. and in this au with shartan being an apostate, it's doubly painful, bcos yes, cyrion managed to hid his son's magic from the chantry - and that's because he had support and protection from his community, he wouldn't be able to do it if he was on his own. community is so important for the city elves, bcos everyone around them is hostile towards them, so they have to stick together and protect each other.

lucas first left antiva when his parents were killed by crows, then left kirkwall when his daughter was taken and wife went missing, and then he lost the rest of his children. he is completely uprooted and i just want him to finally find some stability and community, possibly in a new place that doesn't have any bad memories the way that antiva and kirkwall do, denerim would be as good place as any, esp considering that his son is friends with the literal king of ferelden, no one would dare to bother him again.

I wanna know what kind of "spirit" you all think your Rook, Inquisitor, Hawke and Warden would be. Feel free to gush and wax poetically i wanna READ IT.

Ex. My Rook would be a spirit of Tenacity. Inquisitor would be a spirit of Judgment. Hawke would be a spirit of Devotion. Warden Tabris would be a spirit of Justice.

My Rook, Reine, would be a demon of Spite. Yes yes same as Lucanis. When tenacity becomes just a doged rage against whatever seeks to tell them "no" or they "cant". Well they will and the consequences be on everyones head! Sahlin Lavellan would be a demon of Woe. Upon her enemies, upon herself. All her sorrows and hurts sharpened to a cutting edge. Eislie Hawke would be a demon of Obsession-- devotion perverted to an unyielding and paranoid need to control and protect her loved ones. Devotion but with that harder, hateful edge. And Nadia Tabris, easiest of all, would be a demon of Vengeance.

I’ve seen some Rook concepts who are the Inquisitor’s child or protégé but what about a Rook that is the Inquisitor’s parent? I’m talking a mature hero who had to watch their kid become a religious icon without their consent 10 years ago, and then lead a whole-ass war, only to have the world turn against them and get their arm taken by this Solas guy in the end. Rook as someone who would not even think of getting into new adventures at this point but the thing is, nobody does that to their child and carries on like nothing happened. That person is going to chase the Dread Wolf to the end of the world 👁️

..and no unfortunately Warden wasn't with Rook before Weisshaupt, but she'll definitely be very proud when told that Rook did punch the first warden🤣
