Released on this day 33 years ago (13 May 1991): “Kiss Them for Me” by life-changing veteran British punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Musically, the bewitching first single from the Banshees’ Superstition record (their tenth studio album, issued on 10 June 1991) is a danceable jasmine-scented swirl of psychedelic exotica with a pronounced Asian influence (Talvin Singh plays tablas on it), while the lyrics offer a twisted valentine to Hollywood’s ill-fated sex kitten-gone-berserk Jayne Mansfield. (The title references Mansfield’s 1957 film Kiss Them for Me). “It's divoon / Oh, it's serene / In the fountains pink champagne / Someone carving their devotion / In the heart-shaped pool of fame” Siouxsie coos, sketching-out Mansfield’s commitment to glamour and publicity at her legendary Pink Palace and culminating in her 1967 death in a car crash (“On the road to New Orleans / A spray of stars hit the screen / As the tenth impact shimmered / The forbidden candles beamed …”). “Kiss Them for Me” scored the Banshees their biggest US chart hit (around this time they joined the first Lollapalooza tour, which significantly boosted their profile stateside). The stylish art-y video - seemingly inspired by the cinema of Kenneth Anger and Jean Cocteau - featured a pink poodle, popping champagne corks, palm trees, golden cherubs, the male band members sporting menacing leather biker gear (very Scorpio Rising) and Siouxsie frolicking in a fountain. It justifiably received heavy rotation on MTV (and on MuchMusic in Canada, which is where I would have seen it). Now sing along with me! “No party she'd not attend / No invitation she wouldn't send …”

pretty hard to understand how you could hear jewish people complaining about things as varied as:

(1) how christianity's idea of god as A Big Guy In The Sky has pervaded the public consciousness and diluted how we traditionally view god (if we're significantly assimilated, i mean. even we have to unlearn this)

(2) how antisemitic tropes which have been and will always be deeply, historically christian like blood libel have worked their way into 1) the western social vernacular and 2) much of modern conspiracy regardless of the beliefs of the people who continue to spread them

(3) the fact that for a long time, jewish people were seen as outsiders due to being non-anglo saxon and non-christian to the point that even canada and the united states (which claim to be secular) had university quotas on us through the 1950's. that jews were also kept out of sundown towns. that jews couldn't be a citizen in every (then extant) usa state until over a hundred years since the country's founding.

and thought "ah yes, clearly jewish people have made the concept of cultural christianity up in order to hurt ex-thiestic athiests. clearly, their pain, their experience and their thousand-year history of being pushed to the periphery in the name of christianity (even by countries and people with no official religion) has been constructed to be entirely about me."

it isn't about you or anyone being an athiest. we aren't upset with anyone because they're an athiest. it's about us asking, pleading with people to realize that they are shaped by the environments in which they grow up. yes, people can be deeply traumatized by the environments of sacred places. they can overcome that trauma! they can come to appreciate all the things which once brought them shame.

but to make an analogy— if you grow up having never heard of or seen a single drop of rain, you wouldn't know it exists. let's say you live in a community that shares that experience. an entire country founded in a land in which has never known rain. eventually, you go traveling and meet someone who tells you about how much it rains in their country. they explain rain to you without any ulterior motive. do you accuse them of lying, of making something up, of being hostile with you simply because you've never seen rain?

this is what it sounds like when people who grew up immersed in xtianity, even if they've left and healed, try to tell jewish people we're inventing our own discomforts in the name of blaming somebody else.

as for people who didn't grow up christian but in some other faith, i think they're likely left with some mixed impact of mass christian socialization and their ex-faith, just like some jewish atheists are. it isn't a bad thing to be a non-blank slate. it doesn't make one less of an athiest. i think trying to obtain that sort of tabla rasa is futile. as long as we keep growing and understand how the ways we've been socialized provide us with privileges or perspectives others aren't given the freedom to grow up without... that's what matters. we can hold that and develop strong, personal, present beliefs about god at the same time.

1) Christianity does that, not all religions do that, but also Christianity isnt the only religion to use an anthropomorphic conception of God as an authority figure. Since I was just looking at Sarah Stroumsa’s “Freethinkers of Medieval Islam” I’ll leave another excerpt

The mention of 10th century Kararites as believing Rabbincal Judaism had an “anthropomorphic” view of God is something that I found interesting. I dont know much about Kararite theology or the overall history of it but its a sentiment that does strike me as fitting in with the broader Kararite desire for religion ‘dictated by God, not religion dictated by Man”. Anyway, I’m just saying this because Christianity does not have a monopoly on anthropomorphic conceptions of God because thinking it does can be highly misleading. I’m sure there are critiques of this way to think about God from a Rabbinical point of view but there are even also Christian sects who reject it as well!

As for the rest, produce an example of someone asserting that people are not influenced by a wider religious/cultural environment and I’ll call that person a dumbass. The problem people have isnt with that basic observation, its some people’s assertion of “Oh youre only saying that because you were raised Christian” towards any general criticism of religion. That’s why I keep bringing up examples of people making the types of arguments people incorrectly consider “Christian” but which came from obviously non-Christian contexts.  You may very well be on the same page and this is all just talking past each other, in which case great!

And I agree people arent blank slates! What I disagree with is how some people dont treat these things as a body of knowledge that someone is already carrying but instead as epistemic shackles that limit their ability to talk about anything in general.

It surprises me a bit that Elyse, the sole LP released by Elyse Weinberg before her music was rediscovered in the ‘00s, isn’t more widely feted as a minor psych folk classic. It seems appropriate that it was a member of Elephant-6 cornerstone Elf Power that tracked her down, because her sound has nearly the exact mixture of bric-a-brac whimsy, ragged naïveté, and raw clomping noisiness that would be the Athens collective’s signature. Backed by early American prog band Touch, Weinberg flits between faux-European folk ballads and shambling West Coast hippie music a la Melanie. It would be the ideal soundtrack to a short animated film in a Ralph Bakshi style about the dreams of a medieval peasant woman who inadvertently foraged a load of magic mushrooms. The arrangements throw violin, spoons, tabla, sitar, barrelhouse piano, and harpsicord into the mix, but as grandiose as tracks like “Meet Me at the Station” can get, it’s Weinberg’s raspy yowl that holds centre stage. She’s an excitable vocalist, and she can occasionally verge on tea kettle shrieking, but for the most part she is captivating: her rendition of Burt Jansch’s “Deed I Do” quavers with stoned need, while “Here in My Heart (Underneath the Spreading Chestnut Tree)” and “Last Ditch Protocol” have an unmistakably original weirdness.

Born in Chatham, Ontario, home of Fergie Jenkins and TekSavvy Internet, Weinberg was no poor unfortunate hard done by the music biz. She was a fellow traveler of Canada’s folk elite in the ‘60s (Mitchell, Lightfoot, Ian & Sylvia etc.), apparently made an appearance on The Tonight Show, and her pal Neil Young played on a few tracks from her abortive second record Greasepaint Smile.* In any case, the first record didn’t sell, the label went bankrupt before the second could come out, and her manager dumped her before she could finish recording a third. I guess after that she took the hint. That’s a shame, because between Elyse and its Stonesier follow up there are at least a handful of tracks I like as much as anything to emerge from the first wave of folk rock.

* I’ve seen it asserted that Young plays on Elyse, but I doubt it; it doesn’t sound like him at all. I think the confusion stems from the 2001 Orange Twin reissue, which appends “Houses,” a song from the then-unreleased Greasepaint Smile featuring Young, as a bonus track. “Houses” quickly became Weinberg’s best-known song and it is a masterpiece in my estimation—so fair warning to anyone familiar with the digital version who buys an original pressing of Elyse, as it will not include that track!

A beautiful half-hour of raga-esque modes. RusMexWeek (Zombie Apocalypse)

- Por favor no me mires así. - México jaló suavemente de la cuerda en su mano, acercando al alto chico que no dejaba de observar sus movimientos. - Rusia, basta. - El nombrado de brazos atados se agachó sobre el pequeño mexicano, poniendo su rostro entre su cuello y hombro, estaba fascinado por el dulce aroma que salía del cuerpo debajo de él.

- ¿Otra vez intentando morderme? - México colocó su pie derecho detrás de uno de los pies Rusia, para luego empujarlo con brusquedad por su pecho, haciendo que este cayera al suelo sin ninguna posibilidad de detener la caída con las manos. - Sabes que no me gusta que te me acerques así, ¿podrías parar con eso? - El ruso no dijo nada, simplemente se removió con dificultad en el suelo, intentando ponerse de pie, pero necesitaba de sus manos para tal acción.

- Deja te ayudo. - México se acercó tranquilamente al chico en el suelo, para luego posicionarse detrás de él y empujarlo con todas sus fuerzas para lograr que se volviera a estar sobre sus dos pies. - Listo, nuevamente estás con tus dos pies en la tierra. - El mexicano le sonrió al contrario, quien desvió su vista hacia la ventana, había una extraña ave de colores rojizos posada en el marco de metal.

- ¿Te gustan los pájaros? - Nuevamente no hubo respuesta, Rusia caminó tambaleante hasta la ventana, espantando al hermoso animal alado que había en ella. - Parece que lo asustaste... - El de ushanka bajo la mirada, contemplando con curiosidad la vestimenta que llevaba puesta; tenía unas negras botas militares llenas de sangre seca, un pantalón de camuflaje con pocas manchas y con solo un rasguño, y por último estaba su camisa, la cual era de color gris, era la prenda que más vieja y maltratada se veía.

- Se que la camisa no está en las mejores condiciones, pero no puedo soltarte para cambiártela, espero entiendas. - Rusia vió una vez la ventana, podía observar un hermoso cielo despejado con un brillante sol iluminando el cuarto con sus cálidos rayos. 

- ¿Podrías alejarte de la ventana? No hay nada nuevo que ver. - México caminó hasta el ruso, se agachó por el pedazo de cuerda en el suelo y jaló al contrario lejos de la ventana, llevándolo a paso lento hacía su alcoba.

- Me voy a cambiar, sé un buen chico y vigila la puerta. - El mexicano amarró a Rusia al picaporte de la puerta, para luego entrar en la habitación y darle una última jalada al chico de gran altura al momento de cerrar aquel gran trozo de madera que daba entrada a la alcoba.

El de ushanka inspeccionó su alrededor, se encontraba en un pequeño pasillo de color azul claro, había fotos y cuadros por todo el largo de las paredes, él aparecía en varias de esas imágenes, siendo acompañado siempre por el chico del otro lado de la puerta.

- ¡Vigila bien! - Rusia se tensó en su lugar, para luego dirigir su vista a la puerta al final del pasillo, había un ruido extraño sonando del otro lado y parecía aumentar con el paso de los segundos; aquel sonido estaba poniendo muy nervioso al ruso, quien quería ir a ver que era lo que causaba el ruido, pero la cuerda firmemente atada al picaporte se lo impedía.

- Deja de mover tanto la puerta, ya casi estoy listo. - Rusia arrancó la perilla en un fuerte movimiento, dejando al chico dentro encerrado; ya había reconocido el sonido, eran los pasos y el aliento de alguien corriendo, y se encontraba corriendo en su dirección.

- ¡Rusia! - México pateaba y golpeaba la puerta, él también había oído los pasos, y eso no era bueno, su departamento era el último, si alguien había logrado subir hasta allá sólo tendría de opción su puerta, lo que significaba que el ruso tendría que enfrentar al intruso estando de manos atadas.

- ¡No! - Un hacha atravesó la puerta, tirando una de las tablas que la bloqueaba, Rusia se posicionó, estaría listo para atacar a quien sea que estuviera haciendo añicos la puerta.

- You got it! (¡Lo lograste!) - Una gran mano cubierta con un guante de cuero negro entró por el agujero recién hecho en la puerta, para luego tomar la manija en ella y remover el seguro. - There must be someone inside, it was barricaded on the other side, hold your ax well. (Debe haber alguien adentro, la puerta fue barricada por el otro lado, sostén bien el hacha.) -

- Ready? (¿Listo?) -

- Oui je suis- (Si, estoy-) - Ambos intrusos fueron interrumpidos por un fuerte empujón en la puerta, quien fuese que estuviese dentro había dado el primer paso, tomando a ambos por sorpresa.

- Canada! (¡Canadá!) -

- Je vais bien, mais regarde! (Estoy bien, ¡pero mira!) - EEUU se apoyó con los codos sobre su hermano, ambos habían caído al suelo con el fuerte empujón, por suerte para el de estrellas, el más alto le había amortiguado la caída.

- Oh this can't be good... (Oh esto no puede ser bueno...) - El estadounidense vió con fastidio hacia donde el dedo de su hermano apuntaba, había un gran chico frente a ellos con la cabeza agachada y varias cuerdas alrededor de su cuerpo.

- Aww someone has a puppy. (Aww alguien tiene un cachorro.) - Rusia levantó su vista ante aquellas palabras, sus ojos brillaban con un estremecedor color carmesí, sus intenciones de atacar eran obvias.

- ¡No le hagan daño, está amarrado! -

- And there's the owner. (Y ahí está el dueño.) - EEUU sonrió con burla, para luego aventarse al lado izquierdo del pasillo al tiempo que empujaba a su hermano contra el baranda de las escaleras con su pie derecho. - Move! (¡Muévete!) -

Rusia pasó por el medio de los dos países a una velocidad inhumana, chocando por error con la pared frente a él, no había estado planeado el que ambos chicos le esquivaran.

- Frère, le pistolet! (¡Hermano, la pistola!) - EEUU llevó su mano hasta donde mantenía guardada aquel arma letal, pero no sintió absolutamente nada, había perdido la pistola al inicio de su batalla por la supervivencia.

- ¡Paren! ¡No puede hacerles daño! - El estadounidense chasqueó la legua, el alto chico frente a él tenía la vista fija sobre su hermano, se veía más furioso que antes y se notaba el como ponía sus manos contra la pared para tomar más impulso.

- Oh no, you won't. (Oh no, no lo harás.) - El de gafas de sol tomó el hacha que se encontraba en el suelo junto a él, la levantó lo mejor que pudo por sobre su cabeza y la lanzó con todas sus fuerzas contra el endemoniado chico que corría hacia su hermano.

- Tu crains! (¡Eres un inútil!) - Canadá fue tacleado por el enorme chico de gorro invernal, su estúpido hermano había lanzado su única arma por las escaleras, fallando por una gran distancia a su objetivo.

- It is your fault, you make it look easy! (¡Es tu culpa, lo haces lucir fácil!) -

- Tais-toi et aide-moi! (¡Cállate y ayúdame!) - Canadá tenía sus manos en los hombros de Rusia, quien intentaba desesperadamente acercarse al cuello del chico bajo él, si no podía usar sus manos como armas, se aseguraría de dar un letal ataque con sus dientes.

- Look for the gun! (¡Busca la pistola!) - EEUU jaló al alto chico fuera del cuerpo de su hermano, mandándolo con fuerza contra el suelo, con sus brazos y espalda pegados a este. El estadounidense se subió al pecho del ruso y comenzó a golpear su cabeza y cara lo más fuerte que podía, quería dejarlo inconsciente, pero únicamente logró romper los seguros del bozal que llevaba, dejando que unos grandes y letales colmillos fuesen ahora su mayor problema. - Shit! (¡Mierda!) -

Rusia atrapó con su mandíbula el brazo derecho del chico que lo golpeaba sin piedad; sus grandes y afilados colmillos habían pasado sin problema alguno la suave piel blanca, haciendo que grandes chorros de sangre brotaran de las nuevas heridas, manchando a ambos.

- Frère! (¡Brother!) - Canadá sacó la pistola de su hermano de debajo de un mueble junto a la destrozada puerta, luego volteó asustado hasta donde su único ser querido con vida y sintió su corazón retorcerse en un dolor inimaginable. - Non! (¡No!) - Un gran trozo de carne fue arrancado del brazo de EEUU haciéndolo soltar un desgarrador grito, Canadá apuntó con su arma a aquel despreciable ser que tragaba con una gran sonrisa la carne roja y sangrienta de su hermano.

- ¡NO! - Un gran disparo interrumpió los gritos de agonía de EEUU y los gritos y sollozos de un desesperado México. Rusia cayó al suelo sin vida, el canadiense había enviado a volar la mitad de su rostro.

- États-Unis! (¡Estados Unidos!) - Canadá corrió en pánico hasta su hermano, envolviendo el gran agujero en su brazo con ambas manos, el más chico estaba perdiendo demasiada sangre. - Tu seras bien! Je promets! (¡Vas a estar bien! ¡Te lo prometo!) -

- Don't say that bullshit, we both know that i'm about to die. (No digas esa mierda, ambos sabemos que estoy apunto de morir.) - EEUU jaló su brazo fuera del fuerte agarre de su hermano. - Give me the gun. (Dame la pistola.) -

- Non! (¡No!) - Canadá alejó la pistola de la temblorosa mano de su hermano, no lo dejaría irse, no así, él era todo lo que le quedaba, si llegaba a perderlo él, él... él se quedaría completamente solo...

- Stop crying, I hate to see you like that, you look pathetic (Deja de llorar, detesto verte así, luces patético.) - El canadiense acarició la cara de su hermano, pasando cercas de esos profundos ojos negros que el otro insistía tanto en ocultar con las gafas de sol.

- Allez-vous vraiment m'insulter en mourant? (¿Piensas insultarme incluso cuando estás muriendo?) - Ambos países rieron levemente siendo EEUU interrumpido por una gran cantidad de sangre subiendo por su garganta, para finalmente ser tosida sobre u pecho.

- Just let me do it while I still can... It is inevitable, and you know it. (Sólo déjame hacerlo mientras aún pueda... es inevitable, y tu lo sabes...) - Canadá se limpió las lágrimas con las manos llenas de la sangre de su hermano, cubriendo la parte blanca de su cara con tan vital líquido; él sabía tan bien como su hermano que el de estrellas no sobreviviría a tan fatal herida. - If I see your face on the other side short after this, trust me, surviving the zombie apocalypse won't be nothing compared to what I will do to you down in hell. (Si veo tu cara al otro lado poco después de esto, créeme, sobrevivir al apocalipsis zombie no será nada comparado con lo que te haré en el infierno.) - El canadiense puso la pistola en la mano sana de su hermano, para luego ver destrozado como el mayor se metía aquella arma de fuego a la boca.

Un segundo disparo fue dado en aquel abandonado edificio, un gran charco de sangre comenzó s formarse debajo del recién fallecido, con su hermano llorando desconsoladamente en su pecho.

Los sollozos de dos chicos se volvieron uno, tanto Canadá como México habían perdido a su último ser querido bajo la misma carga letal propiedad de un fallecido Estados Unidos. Poco se imaginan que tan desgarrador recuerdo lo mantendría unidos hasta el fin de sus vidas...

Me disculpo si hice llorar a alguien, pero es que me entristece que este especial haya llegado ya a su fin, en verdad disfruté mucho de esta gran idea, crear una historia para cada tema en tan sólo 24 horas fue todo un reto.

¿Qué les pareció el final? Decidí concluir el RusMex como el inicio una historia CanMex, espero no me odien por eso.

¿Supieron desde un principio que Rusia era un zombie? Creo que me salió algo obvio...
