The Queens
So I’m afraid I might be missing the kings, but I have the queens!
Like I said in the previous post, these were originally supposed to be used on TikTok for quick visualizations of characters, but screw it! We lost so much art I want to show something off
Tabitha, High Chieftess of Andalasia, Queen of the Supernatural and Mairlena, Queen of the Underworld and Northern Styx are queens in their own right.
Rochelle, Queen of Heaven, is married to God and Celeste, Queen of Hell is married to Lucifer.
Psyche, Queen of Aeneas, is married to Cupid and Victoria, Queen of Reapers, is married to Lamonte, the god of Death. She’s the only Queen of a species and not a kingdom.
Bonus!
Marissa is the late Queen of Hell, she was Lucifer’s first wife and Damian’s mother.

Travel to Dinan
29/03/2016: The weather for today. A cold morning but no rain. It warmed up mid-morning as we were leaving Paris but was cool by the time we arrived in Dinan. The temperature was around 11 degrees with light rain and a cold breeze of 14 knots when we arrived.
The day started behind the eight ball. Although we thought we were up early enough to be out of there by nine, packing up took slightly longer than expected and we didn't leave the barge to look for a cab until nine thirty. Once packed we dragged the luggage up onto the deck, across Doris’, our neighbour's barge and onto the shore. Following advice from Claude the night before, Shane and Jo left the kids and all of the gear on the bench next to Cathare whilst they searched for a cab, detouring briefly to Pont Neuf to put a lock on the fence next to the Statue of Henri IV.
Shane loves Jo
There were quite a few areas around the river where one could place such a lock. All, or most of which had comments or commitments (the “C” word) engraved. The messages were mostly brief with the names of the lovers, the only identifying marks whether they were comments about the past or dreams for the future. Ours was about both, at least until one of us drops off of the perch. This year would mark thirty-three years of wedded bliss.
Many of the areas were jam-packed with locks to the extent that it was a struggle to find a place to put a new one. As chance had it, it was lock removal time on Pont Neuf so a fair bit of the chain mesh had been cleared. We put our lock in a cleared section. Since they had already been through this section maybe they wouldn’t go back until next time and the lock would last a fair while. Who knows, it may have only lasted a couple of days.
The fence behind Henry IV on Pont Neuf
We said goodbye to Henry and proceeded to Saint Michels to find a decent taxi rank as most taxis were full due to peak hour and mostly too small. Once at Saint Michels we could only find one cab that was at a rank and it was too small. We immediately discussed contingencies if we needed two cabs and were separated. Jo and Soph would go in the initial cab with most of the luggage, Shane and Zac would take the rest of the luggage up to the road and look for a passing vacant cab. We would then rendezvous at the TT Car Transit in Porte Du Saint-Cloud to pick up the new Renault Espace. This wasn't required though as after walking away from the cab rank to find another without success, we returned to find a Toyota Prius at the rank with hopefully plenty of space for everybody. Shane quizzed the driver of his availability and after some discussion and little understanding we were gestured to get in the car. That’s when the fun began. We were trying to get the driver to cross three lanes of peak hour traffic within 100m (which is fine in Paris) and take a ramp which leads to the wharf, under Pont Neuf and down to our loaded up kids at Pont des Arts. We couldn't get to first base. He crossed the three lanes well enough but pulled up on Pont Neuf. No, no, no. We were gesturing to go under Pont Neuf, not over it. He shrugged his shoulders, crossed the bridge and headed back through the traffic to eventually end up back at the rank. During this time Jo was frantically typing directions into Google Translate and by the time were commenced the second circuit he had half an idea. This time we started in the correct lane adjacent to the river and as we approached the ramp, with more hand gestures and he having half an idea we drove down the ramp, under Pont Neuf, past Sapeurs Pompiers and onto the kids.
Patiently waiting
It only took 10€ to get this far. Luckily all of our luggage and us did fit into the Prius and after showing the driver the address where we were headed we were able to leave the Cathare and eventually Paris for our next destination, Dinan.
The trip from Cathare to the car rental seemed to be a great deal more than Shane explained to Jo. She was relieved when they all fit into one vehicle as she would have been in a panic if by herself with Soph. Maybe it was closer than it actually was and we were taken for a ride (so to speak).
Once we were dropped off we had to search for the TT Car Transit offices as the complex was a multi storey car park with Hertz and other rental companies in residence. We eventually found it inside the car park and moved our luggage into a nice warm reception while the paperwork was completed. It was such a nice experience to sit while they done everything and once completed escorted Shane up to the new vehicle, ran him through some basics as to its complexities, advised him to leave Paris before filling up, drove back down to reception to where Jo and the kids were and then loaded up the vehicle for us. $3,800 for 33 days. Costlier than Hertz but you get what you order, you don't get crap and its brand new. It cost about $5 per day more than the BMW we rented in Germany last year.
As soon as we were all in the car and ready to go the problems started. Shane couldn't get the car into drive and the sales guy who parked the car had blocked off both exit lanes in the car park. We were there for quite a while and it wasn't long before the patient people behind who we were obstructing became impatient and were knocking on his window, having a go in French. Luckily one of them spoke a little English and understood what was going on. She went over to the reception and just as they were coming out to help us out, Shane worked it out. Foot on the brake, pull the T bar to the left before pushing it into Drive. Idiot! Suddenly we were away but within no time we had more problems. We were going to pull up and work out the satellite navigation and which direction we should head. After spending 20 minutes driving through streets looking for somewhere to stop, we finally found a small lane where we could double park and set up the navigation. At this stage we were two hours behind schedule so where we were going to take the slowest route to Dinan as originally planned, we chose fastest route without tolls so that we were not just flogging it out on a tollway somewhere.
GPS working and underway somewhere
We were off and running and out into the suburbs. To make sure that we did get the backroads we firstly put the town of Dreux in to the navigation and headed in the recommended direction. When quite a few kilometres out of Paris and the fuel needle being on empty since we left, Jo looked up nearest service station on her phone and within five kilometres we were pulled over at a pump ready to fill up, except for the fact that we couldn't open the fuel hatch. When we stopped there was nobody around but after ten minutes going through the user manual via the translate option on Jo's phone, we finally worked out that there was no lever to push or pull, just push on the hatch and it will open. Insert the credit card into the slot, be advised of how much you can put in and fill 'er up. Very easy, very quick. Off we went, resuming our journey to Dreux where after driving through the streets found a Macdonald's to shut up the kids. After lunch it was on the road again.
Just past Dreux, the main street of Brezolles
The initial intention was to travel through Dreux, Alençon, Fougères and onto Dinan but due to the delays earlier to put in Dreux to Dinan would have had us arriving at our accommodation at 5:30pm, one and a half hours later than we had advised our hosts. With this in mind we headed straight for Dinan and needed to advise them of our delay and new arrival time which led to another drama. Joanne had bought a SIM card off of Orange for calls and data and after looking up our host's (Cath and John) mobile numbers on the tablet, commenced to phone them but without success. She had data but no phone. Running out of ideas she fumbled through the online Orange website to top up her credit. This should not have been a problem as she had unlimited French calls for two weeks. After an hour plus of stress and unable to do this online, desperation set in as no contact with Cath and John would be the height of rudeness so we pulled off the road to look for a local Orange store that Jo had located on her phone and happened across a public phone booth. "This will do!", Shane emphasised. "Give me the phone number and see if you can find some coins." After scraping up a couple of Euro and grabbing the scrap of paper with Cath's phone number, Joanne walked over to the phone booth to hand it on. As soon as Shane read the phone number that Joanne had given him, he questioned what she had written down as there wasn't enough digits. After going through the numbers provided in their email again and writing down the correct number, Jo was able to phone Cath and advise her of our lateness. "No problem", she said. John is at the house and will wait. Good on John, sitting around with nothing to do for a couple of hours while Cath took it easy at home. Anyway, on we went.
The next issue that we encountered added a bit of time on but ended up being a great excursion. There was a glitch in the navigation system due to new road works adding an extra exit to a roundabout near a highway. Taking the recommended exit threw us over the highway and into the fields rather than on the highway. The recalculation of our route took us through fantastic countryside and villages for the next couple of hours. After driving along narrow roads and through the battle fields of both world wars we stopped at a small village called Lougé-sur-Maire for a break and some water.
Lougé-sur-Maire
It was an interesting little village (what we saw of it) with a meaningful memorial and epitaph recognising the locals who perished in the first world war and the American soldiers who also met their demise in the second.
Part of the shortest distance route took us through farm fields on what seemed like dirt tracks owned by the farmers. There was no room for passing as canola was planted on the road (or lane) verges. Jo was stressing at the prospect of tractors coming in the opposite direction. It was a pretty drive though.
Lougé-sur-Maire memorial & epitaph
From here we moved on towards Dinan, traveling along similar roads until we neared our destination. Once we arrived, another problem arose. We were two hours late and instead of the navigation taking us to the address entered, it took us to the centre of Dinan, not where we were staying, 8 Rue du Four. When we re-entered the address, the system took us around Dinan and back to where we started. Stressful times, two plus hours late, in the wrong spot and no navigation system. To make things worse, there was a lot going on with restoration and roadwork around the town and as such plenty of detours or Dérivation happening. Added to this, Shane hit the gutter when approaching Dinan while looking at the navigation system and nearly rear-ended a car. A matter of inches. The problem was solved by leaving the town, toward some sort of education facility and after re-entering the destination, off we went. In the right direction and after some minor glitches, we were crossing the viaduct that we crossed earlier, heading down to the Rance River and to our destination.
John was patiently waiting, initially looking for our car near the river and leading us to 8 Rue du Four. Once we had unloaded our luggage at the front door, John suggested swapping parking spots with him. He was parked under the viaduct due to a new car park being developed further down and no parking being permitted out the front of the house due to the passage of trucks and narrow streets. This done, we were escorted though the house, shown the appliances and how things work. Isaac was in seventh heaven. There was a Playstation and good stock of games as well as English Foxtel and Netflix. After eight days of no TV, things were about to change. Shortly after we were left to our own resources.
Parked out of the way
Due to the lateness of the hour, we headed straight down to the river to look for a feed. The long way of course to see a bit before dark. Walking down Rue du Four and past our car saw us under the viaduct. Huge, is an understatement. At forty metres high and two hundred and fifty long, it seemed to dwarf the township in its shadow. Construction started in 1846 and took six years. When finished it connected Lanvallay to Dinan old town which would have made traveling for the locals much easier.
Heading along Rue du Four toward the viaduct
Pont Vieux over le Rance
Looking back upstream from the bridge
On Pont Vieux looking downstream
Sun setting on the old pub. A euphemism maybe?
After a short stroll across the bridge and down Rue du Quai, you wouldn't have guessed it, all of the restaurants were mostly shut. We walked much of the street to the end of the marina before putting about and returning to the few restaurants which were open. It seemed that if we didn't want crêpes, there was only one restaurant going, the Café Terrasses, immediately next to the old stone bridge crossing the river.
Looking upstream across the marina
Looking up the hill from the old bridge
We didn’t want crêpes so Café Terrasses it was. We studied the footpath menu and decided that this was the go. When we walked in there was plenty of room. We were shown a table and ordered refreshments while we studied the table menu. Same as the footpath menu, strange that. We could sit in comfort and take our time while the sun set on the people outside.
Choosing in comfort
Cola boy
Shane wasn't that hungry so chose a seafood platter for one consisting of
Plateau de Fruits de mer pour 1 personne
5 Cancale native oysters No.3, Dublin Bay prawns, shrimps, weelks, winkles, a crab and almonds.
Jo and Zac had steak and Soph only ordered chips but wanted to try some of Shane's. Since she was keen he ordered a smaller platter for her.
Assiette du Mareyeur
4 oysters, dog cockles, whelks and periwinkles
Heaps of food came out and it was time to dig in. All of the shellfish, however foreign, did have a familiarity about it. Taste and texture varied markedly but all were, although not delicious, pretty good and most went down well. Most of what Soph didn't eat was eaten by Joanne with the periwinkles being particularly temptuous. So much so in fact that Shane suggested that next time they go to Newcastle Beach we can go and have a feed off of the rocks.
Some delicious, some not so delicious. All good but
Dad impersonator
A couple of bottles of Pinot Gris complimented the meal and after sweets for those not yet full, we headed back over the river to the house to settle in for the night.
Telly before bed
Tomorrow we'll look around town.
