Hiya! I have a Daisy X reader request.
Instead of Ward being shocked by deathlok (pretty much stopping her heart), (when Skye is taken on the BUS by Ward), it's Reader, who was already on the BUS without anyone knowing. (Deathlok nearly killing her with the shocker thing, to get Skye to complie and give them what they want.) Season one.
😶😶
You be sending me this when I already have plans for this for *spoiler alert* TSTL

Almost 20 years ago Aleksio’s mother and father were murdered right before his eyes. Murdered, because they were the head of the Albanian mafia in Chicago and his father’s best friend wanted to take over. He escaped, and now he’s back for revenge. Almost 20 years ago, Mira watched as the small coffin containing her best friend was lowered into the earth. Except it was a lie. Now he’s back and he’s out for revenge. Revenge against her father. And she’s the perfect hostage. But neither of them can stop the feelings. Neither of them can stop the attraction. But is it enough to save them.
Sometimes you just want a well written dark mafia romance. And this is exactly that. (And despite what you might think by my Born to Be Bound rants, I don’t hate the genre. I just want it clearly labeled.)
Anyway, back to this book, it’s got all of the classic tropes, including abduction, childhood friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, hurt/comfort, And a little light BDSM. But this isn’t erotica. It’s sort of a cross between dark romance and romantic suspense. The action starts strong and doesn’t really let up until the end.
The characters are well rounded for the most part I found myself liking Viktor quite a bit, along with Yuri and Tito. Aleksio is a tougher nut to crack. He’s complex and an interesting mix of emotional and cold at the same time. I liked and I disliked Mira at the same time. I got a bit of “not like other girls“ from her, which I didn’t totally love. I also didn’t love one section where she went a little TSTL for a moment. It’s a spoiler so I don’t wanna ruin it but you’ll know it when you see it. At the same time, I liked that she wasn’t a passive heroine. And that she didn’t compromise her morals. On to the triggers for this book. The initial sex scene is a bit dubious consent. Which is right in line with a dark romance. That said it’s sort of up to the reader as to whether or not it goes fully dubious consent. However it is important to note going in that this book does contain graphic depiction of violence, abduction, dubious consent, BDSM, Degradation kink, discussion of prostitution, murder, discussion of child abuse, and a whole slew of other stuff that I’m probably forgetting. Which is basically shorthand for read with care.
In all, this was an entertaining well written read with engaging characters and a good over arcing plot. The romance between the two leads is integral and complete. But the series arc is still ongoing, and I’m interested to see what happens with Viktor’s story coming up. So because I liked it but didn’t love this book it gets: Four stars

I was excited to pick a copy of this book up for review, since I don’t think I’ve ever read a romantic suspense with a Coast Guard hero. The CGIS (Coast Guard Investigative Service) is a federal law enforcement agency which never really gets more than a supporting role in fiction, so I was definitely interested to learn more about the service. Imagine my surprise to discover that apparently CGIS agents are happy to allow civilians they’re attracted to, to assist them in processing crime scenes. Or help them question witnesses. At least, according to this author. Somehow, I don’t think this is actually representative of the real CGIS.
The agents in this book seem more concerned about what brand of shoes they’re wearing than the crimes they’re investigating. Seriously, I don’t think a single character put on a pair of shoes without the brand being named - it got to the point where I actually think the author might be being paid for product placement. It’s THAT bad. Not only shoes, either.
I struggled to maintain the narrative thread because the point of view character kept changing. Though the narrative ostensibly centers on Gabby, an investigative reporter whose brother Noah is in the CGIS, and her love interest, Noah’s friend and colleague Finn, the PoV kept jumping to Noah and another colleague, Rissa, and their part in the investigation. Mid-chapter and without warning, the narrative shift and change in pace was jarring to say the least.
More than all of this, what annoyed me most intensely was the overt evangelism of the characters. Thinking that she was grateful a new widow was a Christian because ‘at least she’d be comforted knowing her husband was with God’ was an attitude that horrified me from Gabby, even more than discovering she walked out on a three month relationship with Finn with NO NOTICE when she got a job offer in a different city. Seriously, she up and left the same day! I couldn’t believe he was willing to SPEAK to her, much less put his life on the line for her sake, or that her brother would have the gall to ASK him to. Her holier-than-thou attitude and constant thinking about how grateful she was for God’s provision and protection really grated once I knew how badly she’d treated someone she professed to care about.
I was so irritated by the obvious misrepresentation of the CGIS’ professionalism (two traitor members and a bunch of incompetent ones), the product placement, the evangelising and Gabby being such a queen bee - there’s a difference between being a driven investigative reporter and stubbornly TSTL - that I honestly didn’t care if the plot was any good or not. Not a spoiler: it could have been, but ended with a deus ex machina instead, the main villain not having been anywhere in the plot up until he suddenly turned up and started killing subordinates for failing him.
This is the second story I’ve read set in the American South in a matter of a couple of weeks where literally everyone is white, too. Oh. Except one of the villains, who was Latinx. Which is actually worse than all-white, when your only character of color is a villain.
Fail on all counts, including racism, so this is getting a one star from me.
The Killing Tide is available now.

Otome route reivew: Toshizo Hijikata, HAKOUKI
I played the Hakouki mobile app which includes both Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms back to back, but with just six routes to choose from.
Spoilers below the cut.
General thoughts on HAKOUKI
I absolutely love this game, from the stunning art to the historical detail, the high drama and the cute characters. It manages to combine a slow pace with peril, danger and humour.
Why I chose Toshizo Hijikata
I’m a sucker for a military commander who is icy and dangerous but also shows flashes of sweetness and a lot of intelligence and honour. His voice is also to die for and I’m so glad they didn’t dub an English actor over the Japanese.
Hero’s plot and character
I’ve seen Hijikata called both a “tsundere asshole” (cold and hostile) and the “dojo mum” and he’s very much both those things. Also, he’s a samurai who says “fuck”. A lot. It’s hilarious.
Hijikata is very much driven by his duty to the Shinsengumi, a group of ragtag samurai-but-not-really who are struggling to protect Kyoto from ronin (rogue homeless samurai) and the Imperial army. He seeks to cover his friend in glory, the in-name leader of the Shinsengumi, though it’s clear that Hijikata is the one who’s really in charge.
This is a slow burn romance. Hijikata shows his growing affection for Chizuru through deeds, not words, but to me that’s infinitely preferable because you get the adorable and sexy protective moments coupled with both Hijikata and Chizuru pretending that they’re only focused on their goals, that’s all, I don’t like him/her, feelings, me?
He’s able to show a lot of weakness, both to the heroine and his best friend, and I love that. This is someone who goes through relentless challenges and stress and a lot of physical and mental pain. He’s very strong but he’s not one to be all “this is fine” when everything is clearly not fine. He’s more “everything’s shit so I guess I won’t sleep for the next three months.”
Heroine’s plot and character
Chizuru is probably the most “Eastern” MC that I’ve come across so far. I was reading an interview with the writers from CYBIRD (makers of Ikemen Sengoku etc) and they were saying how when they translate their otomes into English they give the heroine lines to speak or think to herself rather than “...” which appears in the Japanese version of the game. It seems like a Japanese audience takes "...” as a thoughtful/intelligent silence or an opportunity to “mind read”, and a Western audience thinks she’s a doormat/idiot/TSTL heroine. The English version of HAKOUKI leaves in all the “...” and “I...ah...um” moments which frustrated me a little. But hey, cultural differences.
That being said Chizuru really steps up in key moments and gives Hijikata a good damn talking to and literally keeps him alive on many occasions. One of my favourite things about their route is that both of them would be SUPREMELY FUCKED without the other and this is something they gradually discover together. Here for it.
However, I feel there’s one major character/plot flaw related to Chizuru that can’t be explained away by cultural differences or maintaining the romantic tension.
***Spoilers from here on***
At the beginning of HAKOUKI we learn that Chizuru has had some training in self-defence and carries a sword with her everywhere she goes. The sword belongs to her mother. This is not a world where “girls don’t fight”, and Chizuru goes out on many dangerous patrols with the captains. Yes, it’s a “girls don’t usually fight” world, but given where Chizuru lives and the things that happen around her we have a good bloody reason for Chizuru to hone her battle skills.
At multiple points in the story Chizuru asks herself how can she better help the Shinsengumi, and not once does she think, “the ranks are thinning, I’d better start training myself up so I can be of practical use”. Instead, she makes tea for Hijikata. Hrrrrrmmm. Don’t get me wrong, I love the tea scenes, they’re cute af and frankly I want to make Hijikata tea too because the poor man is so stressed. But Chizuru, your sword is right there at your hip, can you not, like, USE IT.
Maybe they didn’t want to take away opportunities for Hijikata to do his romantic protectiveness thing later in game or make the heroine too autonomous. Japanese audiences might find the idea of Warlord Chizuru off-putting. I don’t know. I suppose I can almost live with Chizuru’s passiveness in this area.
BUT. The main flaw, which I have a lot of trouble forgiving: Chizuru, it turns out, is a goddamn demon. She’s stronger than a normal human and she heals faster than a normal human. As Hijikata takes years off his life battling Kazama all I could think was that it should be Chizuru stepping up to the fight. Everyone knows she’s a demon and that she’s unkillable unless you put a sword through her heart. Using her powers doesn’t hurt her in the slightest and it’s KILLING HIJIKATA to use his. Overlooking this was such a “wtf” thing to me.
The romance and resolution
A long, long time ago the “I don’t need him to love me, I just need to be with him, always, while we work together for the greater good” trope made me it’s bitch so I lapped this stuff up in later chapters. Because the Hijikata/Chizuru romance is all noble deeds rather than sweet words and kissing I was in agonies over whether we would actually GET any kissing and love pledges. But thank fuck we do and that moment was perfect for Hijikata and Chizuru. I know some people read “I’m probably in love with you” and wanted to hurl their phones/laptops/vitas across the room, but I loved it and cackled like crazy.
We also got some chapters post-pledge and it was nice to be “in” the romance before the game ended. I can’t fault this slow-burn goodness.
My next route
Probably Hijikata a few dozen more times :’) I’m really interested in Saito and Harada as well and I’ll probably buy the Steam version so I can try the Kazama route too. This is definitely a game to play and replay as there’s so much to discover on other routes.

Review: Spin the Dawn
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim Rating: ★★★★☆
I’m not gonna lie, I jammed that “Add to TBR” button the second I saw this cover. And then I read “Project Runway meets Mulan” and I turned into the physical embodiment of the I Have a Mighty Need meme.
So, does this live up to the hype? For me, hell yeah.
This is a sweeping, romantic saga steeped in mystery and lore that went a long way toward rekindling my love for the young adult fantasy genre.
The world building in this Chinese-inspired land was phenomenal. The Project Runway portion of the story is mostly constrained to the grounds of the Emperor’s palace, and it’s filled with court intrigue set against the backdrop of a vibrant city bursting with life. The second half of the book is no less exciting. Because it turns into more of a quest-driven adventure romp full of danger and high thrills out on the open road.
Maia is everything I look for in a heroine. She’s driven, intelligent, talented, brave, and loyal. The love interest, Edan, was just as strong for me. There’s none of that pushy, borderline abusive bullshittery here. Their relationship is rock solid. Edan, while teasing and mischievous by nature, is always there for Maia. From the moment they meet, he lifts her up and supports her. He believes in her. And she, in turn, is there for him. This is what a healthy relationship looks like.
More of this in YA, please.
This book is also super sex positive. I’m not going to go into detail here, because the publication date is a long way off and spoilers. Let’s just say that progressive, feminist themes pervade these pages without ever feeling preachy.
I also adored all of the shades of gray that Lim added to her villains. One-dimensional bad guys are not my thing, so I always appreciate when we’re given insight into their characters. Lim excels at that. She reveals just enough of their motives and driving emotions that you think that maybe, possibly, there’s hope for redemption. Which makes it all the more painful when they do terrible things.
Throughout this book, I kept vacillating between empathy for one of the villains, and abject hatred. Bravo.
The last thing you need to know before going into this is that it is definitely a romance. While the blurb only mentions Edan, their relationship is one of the central pieces of this story, and it dominates the second half.
Also, these characters are fallible. While Maia is intelligent, she’s still a teenager, and she exhibits some behavior that a lot of curmudgeonly adult readers like myself might find borderline TSTL later on in the book, which is what kept this rating closer to a 3.5 than a 4 star read for me.
But honestly, the setting and the story more than made up for it, which is why I bumped this up to four.
If you love yourself a romantic fantasy, add this one to your TBR right the hell now.

Hide By Drew Jordan
My Blog | Facebook
**If you haven't read Crash yet please be advised that there are going to be spoilers in this review...
Still here?
okay, let's begin.
So, Laney and Stranger left off with Laney killing Michael, she didn't want to leave her Stranger. She wanted to stay in the bush with the man she is obsessed with. We still know nothing about Stranger, not even his real name.
I will tell you why I decided to give this book 3 stars. It's not because I hated it but because it feels like this is a filler book. Not much really happened. Laney wanted to go settle things back home, of course, stranger understood and allowed this. he told her that he wasn't going with her, he had to take care of things at the homestead. Knowing that Laney's actions had forced his hand.
Drew Jordan is good at her craft; I am going to hands down admit this. The small manipulations written in a book amazed me. The way she wrote this dark erotica was amazing. I am impressed by this series. I just wished we got a little more of them. I wished we at least got a tease as to who Stranger was. I loved guessing I really did, but I felt like we needed something added just to keep that little attention.
I won't lie I have purchased all three of these in paperback and I fully read the conclusion to this series with Exposed.
So, in the end, three stars because it felt like a filler, yes, I was a little miffed because we weren't even given his name. I wasn't a huge fan of Laney I felt she whined too much, and she does have a TSTL complex, but Stranger is obsessed with her, we can even go as far as to say in his own twisted way loved her.
I am off to review the next one. yep, I read it already. See you there!

Out for Blood by Kristen Painter
This series has many flaws but since I have read the first few books I am going to see it through. While it is true that I have been spacing them out, so I could have missed it but I kept searching for a bigger picture or an overarching plot in these books. However, I couldn’t find one.
Another thing that bugs the heck out of me is the so-called protagonist. She is bitchy, whiny, and TSTL. She acts without thinking of the consequences. The guy in love with her keeps jumping in to rescue her and ends up facing those consequences. Also, I have NO idea why guys keep falling for her left and right even with all the bitchiness.
The ending was another letdown. It seemed as if the author wanted to ensure that the readers would read the next book. After all the torture that the hero suffered for the girl, he was mind raped by a supernatural being. The outcome was that he forgot he ever had feelings for her. I am guessing the next one is going to be about the girl trying to undo that. Fortunately, that book is the last in this series. So yaay!
Jessica Jones, Vol. 1: Uncaged by Brian Michael Bendis
The same sense of loneliness pervades the comics that you’d find on the show. We catch a glimpse of Kamala doing her thing.
Below, you can see a huge twist that had me shocked:
Destroyer #5 and #6 by Victor LaValle
Two good issues. My fave scene was the kid who could physically snap his parents’ necks — the mother is an evil scientist out for revenge while the father isn’t a lightweight either with his body fused to a suit of armour — being told off by them for being mouthy:
Oh and the poor Frankenstein’s Monster finally gets some well-deserved rest:
I liked how the kid is able to relate to the monster and even tries to connect with him. Who knows he might have succeeded if his bloodthirsty mom hadn’t butted in.
John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction: Vault #1 by James Ninness
Another one that failed to leave an impression. I don’t think I will be continuing with this one.
Xena: Warrior Princess Vol. 4 (1&2) by Meredith Finch
So far, so good. I will be reading the next one.
Downward to the Earth Vol. 1 & 2 by Philippe Thirault
This is one freaky graphic novel. I dunno why it feels so visceral and just yucky yet I finished the whole thing. I was on the lookout for the White Man’s Burden trope while reading it. But, I think the “white” people (Humans) are even more screwed up than the ones colonised (Aliens). Let’s see, some of them are junkies, others are murderers, not to forget the ones who are cheating while in a relationship. The only thing that stank was the violent belief of the natives of the planet: In order to be reborn, they must get high and slaughter innocent animals. Take a look at the carnage:
I don’t think this could be the end though. Do you?
Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor Volume 7 – Death Beneath the Waves by George Mann & Vol 8: Time Trials: The Wolves of Winter
The art resembles Peter Capaldi so closely…I mean look at those brows!!
The alternate covers are amazing!
The same creepy stories make you feel right at home i.e. in the TARDIS lol
The Doctor is usual unrepentant and spoiler-throwing self:
There were pop-culture references to enjoy when Bill Potts arrived on the scene:
Sleepy Hollow, Vol. 1 by Marguerite Bennett
Almost as good and fun as the show used to be:
Come Into Me #1 by Zac Thompson
Just freaky and sad. I don’t think I’ll be following this one.
White Hot by Ilona Andrews
One of the best things about an Ilona Andrews book is how family-centric they are. It is refreshing to see a character derive her strength from her family. The humor in these books is just my kind of humor too. I also like the time they dedicate to developing the relationship between the protags. This installment was fun to read!
Harry Potter & the Cursed Child by J K Rowling
Now this one was a pleasant surprise! If nothing else, the humor was very HP-ish. Look for yourself:
I found all the things that turned off other readers worked for me. For one, how can we expect the kid who grew up with a part of Voldemort inside him to be a functional adult? Why would he think he’d make a good parent? Then there is Ron who has spent his life being overshadowed by his siblings. He made a best friend who eclipsed even his brothers and married someone like Hermione. He wasn’t a good student or ambitious while his wife worked her way up to the Minister for Magic’s post. In what world would there not be a strained relationship between such individuals? Draco had been a Death Eater. In an ideal world, people would forgive him for erring but this play wasn’t set in the perfect world that we are used to.
And these people just went ahead and had kids of their own. Try to think about how hard life must be for Draco’s kid or even Harry’s!
As I said, I liked it!
So Long and Thanks for all the Fish by Douglas Adams
If I remember correctly, according to the readers, this is the book in the series where it all started going downhill. It is true that these books have always been completely random. When I pick up a THGTTG book, I don’t expect anything from it but that it will be a fun read. This time though, the randomness was a bit much. There was no Marvin to keep things morbidly funny and the humor seemed forced. Moreover, after the previous books made such a big deal out of Earth’s destruction, the planet suddenly bounced back into existence. Why?! The good thing is there is just one more book for me to suffer through.
Cartoon Network: Super Secret Crisis War! #1-6 by Louise Simonson
Fun and silly just like the cartoons themselves! Here are some scenes from the comics, including Dexter’s really bad puns:
This time though, the bad guys did come up with a great plan. They made evil clones of the good guys to fight them! Of course, they didn’t count on the three Eds ruining their plans. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
April 2018 — A Wrap Up Out for Blood by Kristen Painter This series has many flaws but since I have read the first few books I am going to see it through.
