group f (for 'final'):
Netherlands: Hans Peter Minderhoud on Toto Jr. big mover, both in front and behind. froth and so much gape. seriously. so. much. gape. frame isn’t bad, but they’re clearly Discussing head carriage/placement. parts of this test look really strenuous.
Poland: Aleksandra Szulc on Breakdance. very apt name for a horse in these Olympics! lovely gray with a lot of his dapples left, and much more slightly built than most dressage horses - apparently he’s from jumper lines (we love to see it). he’s got beautiful, forward gaits, but they aren’t flashy, which i think will knock this pair’s score. (judging bias my beloathed.) their frame is okay - not quite hyperflexed, but definitely tight. loootttsss of gape. bit of a moment in the first canter pirouette, but they salvaged it.
Canada: Camille Carier Bergeron on Finnlanderin. this mare’s home life sounds amazing: trails twice a week and as much turnout as they can manage. literally the dream. i love the look of her; she’s got lovely movement. somewhat hyperflexed, however, and accompanied by frothing and overt gape.
Spain: Borja Carrascosa on Frizzantino FRH. some gape and froth. nice engagement of the hind end. i think their frame is pretty good - mostly on/in front of the vertical.
Luxembourg: Nicolas Wagner Ehlinger on Quater Back Jr FRH. individual rider! love that his socks are on diagonal legs. this is a nice frame - consistently in front of the vertical with minimal froth and gape. very classical looking, very cool to see.
Australia: Simone Pearce on Destano. big powerful movement, with a few weird wiggles in the canter work (i don’t think it’s his favorite). the tiniest bit of froth and gape. another really nice frame, with Destano’s nose consistently in front of the vertical. these last two tests are, excepting the gape, what i wish modern dressage looked like all the time.
New Zealand: Melissa Galloway on Windermere J’obei W. individual rider! also has big movement, altho the extended trot is a bit stilted - smoother on one side than the other. slight gaping at times; little-to-no froth. nice and tucked under in the hind end. frame is acceptable - tight, but mostly on the vertical.
United States: Steffen Peters on Suppenkasper. it looks weird and awkward from the beginning and doesn’t get better. one of the pros i know said she would have retired during the test. this is Not It.
France: Pauline Basquin on Sertorius de Rima Z. moving properly (from the back end forward). a little froth, practically no gape. frame is acceptable; it got tight and behind the vertical in some of the collected work, which sucks, because it was nice and in front of the vertical in the other movements.
Germany: Jessica von Bredow Werndl on TSF Dalera BB. ewhy does she have letters both before and after her name. very nice movement, and incredibly flashy in extended trot (her hind end couldn’t quite keep up). gape and a tight frame that comes in and out of hyperflexion, even with the curb rein quite loose.
am i watching dressage just so i can judge the riders on how comfortable their horses look? yes. yes i am.
#horse content finished! at least until the finals start and i can judge the big names Even More#(don't worry it'll probably be the same complaints and i won't post in that case)#horses#dressage#paris 2024#olympics
