Notes: Step aside Klaine Advent 2017 Day 13 'Mist', this is the hardest prompt I've had to use.

Anyway, let's check in with our boy, Kurt.

Kurt’s going to miss Ljubljana. Of course, he is. This city has given him so much: love, friendship, energy. It’s his last day and it’s weird to walk around Kongresni trg with Sunil and Tadeja, knowing that he won’t be back here for probably a long time.

They’re about to grab a pizza at Ljubljanski dvor, the place where he first met Blaine. But Blaine isn’t here anymore. Kurt woke up to a message from Blaine, telling him that he’s landed safely, and then another string of messages about his brother. Due to time difference, they haven’t really talked yet. Blaine is in America. Kurt’s following suit. His flight leaves in a couple of hours.

“This will be my last meal in Ljubljana, probably,” Kurt laments. The overpriced stuff at the airport will not count.

“Awww,” Tadeja pouts.

“You could’ve stayed,” Sunil points out, albeit in a more jokey way. Sunil knows that Kurt isn’t staying. He considered it for a while. He needs to do an internship for his next academic year and it might’ve been possible to also do that here in the first semester. This is why Sunil is staying instead of going back to Sri Lanka.

And Kurt adores Ljubljana, but it’s different without Blaine.

Not only that, but he’s cooking something up. He’s already spammed his advisor’s e-mail about it. Kurt’s trying to go to Los Angeles. It’s probably too late to find an internship for September, but the second semester is also an option, so Kurt’s gunning for February.

He hasn’t talked about it with Blaine, because Kurt first wants to have a concrete plan before he brings it up. Kurt’s only told his dad briefly over the phone. His dad wondered if it was smart to uproot his life for a guy, but Kurt argued that it’s temporary and he might move in with Blaine and Quinn for those six months, so it’ll save costs and what not. His dad argued back that money is no problem, since he’s a congressman so he can help. That’s where the conversation ended, but Kurt’s only at the beginning of the planning process.

First, he has to go back to New York.

Kurt, Sunil and Tadeja eat their pizza’s and talk about silly things. No one wants to dwell on the fact that Kurt’s leaving. God, Kurt’s going to miss Sunil so much.

After pizza, they have one last walk through the centre of Ljubljana, but then it’s time to go to Tadeja’s place to get Kurt’s luggage. Since Kurt obviously couldn’t stay in Blaine’s apartment, he spent the last night at Tadeja’s.

“This is it,” he says once everything’s ready. They stand outside of Tadeja’s building. The taxi has been called.

Tadeja hugs him first.

“Nasvidenje,” she says, “Pogrešal te bom.”

“I will miss you too,” Kurt says back, in English, because he wants to spare Tadeja from his terrible Slovene pronunciation. Tadeja knows it and playfully scorns Kurt.

Then it’s time to say goodbye to Sunil and it hurts. It’s different than saying goodbye to Blaine, but it’s still painful.

“Sunil-”

Sunil cuts him off with a hug.

“I know,” he says, “I know. The feeling is a mutual.”

The taxi arrives. Sunil helps Kurt with his luggage and then it’s over. Kurt gets in the car and waves as it drives away.

“Hey kiddo.”

God, Kurt didn’t know how much he missed his dad until now. Kurt’s dad and Carole flew to New York to welcome him back and then they’re staying for a couple of days so that they could spend it with Kurt.

Kurt’s pretty sure Carole is weeping with joy.

The three of them travel to Kurt’s apartment. He shares it with two women named Rachel and Santana. They’re from the same fancy all-girls school and they tolerated each other enough to move in together. They originally shared the apartment with another classmate, but she moved out to go back home to Westerville, so Rachel and Santana needed a new roommate.

That’s how Kurt ended up in this place. They’ve been living together for three years and it’s fine. He likes Rachel and Santana, although they drive him mad at times, especially Rachel. He subleased his room to another New Yorker, but that person has left so that Kurt can return.

Rachel and Santana aren’t there to welcome him home, since Rachel said something about “meeting someone from the industry” and Santana wanted to “buy a bikini for her girlfriend”, but that is fine. That gives him, his dad and Carole more space to unpack in peace.

“Good to be back?” his dad asks when Kurt steps into his bedroom.

“Different,” Kurt answers.

New York is so different from Ljubljana. Kurt walks towards his window and looks outside. Ljubljana might’ve been the capital of a country, but it has nothing on New York. New York is busier, faster, louder… it’s just more in every sense. It cannot be compared to Ljubljana. Kurt already misses the charm of Ljubljana.

He wonders how Blaine is doing in LA. LA is already a completely different city from New York. Kurt hopes he’ll like it there.

“Dad, can I have a moment to call Blaine?” he asks. There’s only a 3 hour time difference between them now, which is way better than the 9 hour one.

“Of course,” his dad says kindly, “Tell him hi from us.”

Carole nods. Then they leave and close the door behind them.

Kurt calls Blaine, who immediately picks up. Blaine was expecting him to call.

“Hey there,” Blaine sounds cheerful, “Back in New York?”

“Oh, I am so tired,” Kurt says, “Is your jet lag gone?”

“Almost,” Blaine answers with a laugh.

“Is your brother gone?”

“Yes!” Blaine sounds relieved.

“Is it that bad?” Kurt asks. He’s happy and touched that his dad and Carole flew to New York for him and he’s beyond excited to spend the next couple of days with them.

Blaine seems to pick up on that. God, he knows Kurt so well.

“Well, I am glad to see him. I did miss him, but Quinn, Denise and I wanted to figure out what to do with you know what,” Blaine sighs, “We want to have some stability in life again before we tell other people that we broke up. Quinn’s mother apparently sent me a welcome home gift for, I quote, her favourite son-in-law, which was sweet but… weird.”

Kurt can imagine. When he and Adam broke up, it was also an adjustment for Kurt’s friends and family, but he and Adam were nowhere as serious as Blaine and Quinn. That, and Kurt didn’t realise he had a completely different sexuality.

What would his dad say if he came home with a woman? The thought makes him want to giggle.

“Anyway, enough of my worries,” Blaine says, “How are you?”

They talk for an hour until Kurt’s dad interrupts to tell Kurt that Rachel has gone home and wants to greet him. Kurt and Blaine tell each other they love each other and hang up. Kurt sighs. Two more weeks and then Blaine will be in New York. He can’t wait.

End notes: God, I actually miss Ljubljana. One of the reasons I went back and forth on this sequel plan is because I knew the sequel wasn't going to be in Ljubljana, but I also love these versions of the boys (and Quinn) so much.

I still am looking for a title and it'll probably be in Slovene for consistency, even though the story isn't in Slovenia. But you know, neither was Je tik pred vami.

Listening: Billy Joel. I like Billy Joel. His songs are often what I want from music, which is a guy singing about being in or witnessing a situation. Billy Joel has, as all singers seem to have, songs about being in love or having a good time at a party or whatever but they come across more as like. Advice packaged up as a song, obvious examples being Vienna and Tell Her About It. My car's music player is usually somewhere in Billy Joel.

I have had independent lines from "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" stuck in my head all week.

There's like three songs in this song. That's a lot of song per song!

Reading: Finished Fugitive Telemetry earlier in the week, a Murderbot Murder Mystery that finally spends enough time on Preservation to really get into it.

Preservation reminds me of a setting an old friend came up with, although hers was more. Authoritarian. In a weird way that managed to weave in a strong sense of individual freedom and liberty with an extremely powerful and controlling state.

Murderbot really does work best as short stories, for me at least, the heavy use of descriptions of interacting with computer resources gets taxing after a while but in short bursts is really good at painting a vibrant and multifaceted information landscape as interesting as the physical spaces the story takes place in.

Also reading a Rane Audio Note I somehow missed when I read most of these a while ago, this one on low voltage circuit designs for audio, mostly centred on the problem statement "You've got a 1.5V alkaline cell, how do you get good audio out of this" and then very neatly and helpfully breaking down your possible concerns, specs to care about, matters of reference voltage creation, etc. Love industry application notes, fantastically handy pieces of documentation.

Watching: Nothing, nothing, nothing. I've got some evenings where the power's out where I should probably put some Shows on but I tend to end up browsing blogs instead.

Playing: Her Story, which was really good. I mentioned how it was going earlier but I'll put my extended discussion in rot13 for those who haven't played it.

Also whipped up rough cuts for round 2 of Galena's cases, there's more build log posts in the Galena tag that you can check out, but here's what those look like.

the old cases there are mitered white oak, which is nice but I way overdid the sizes, and I wanted to try my original idea, which was to cut the whole thing out of a solid chunk of wood. Rhodesian teak, in this case, super hard, super tough, unbelievably annoying to work with wood. Looks great.

Tools and Equipment: my usual non-water cleaning solvent is isopropyl alcohol, but I recently picked up some acetone for the first time in ages and it's really compelling for stubborn goo. For one thing, you can get 100% acetone off the shelf, and it's a really effective non-polar solvent. It is of course hideously flammable and very very volatile, so pick your fights.

The Australian state of NSW has approximately 40 active coal mines, and the central West of NSW has mines that produce molybdenum, tungsten, copper, gold, niobium, and phosphate. You may be surprised to learn that NSW is Australia's second largest gold producing state.

In all mines in New South Wales, mobile and transportable equipment must be designed, manufactured, and used in accordance with Mine Design Guideline 15 (MDG15).

Mine Design Guidelines established an industry standard for engineering requirements and equipment that was suitable for the coal mining sector in NSW.

MDG15 is a great illustration of how business and government can work together to accomplish a common objective.

MDG15 has had some incredibly worthwhile goals since its inception, and we celebrated its 30th anniversary in NSW last year, in 2022. These objectives centre on reducing, and ideally eliminating, previously intolerably high rates of accidents involving individuals using and maintaining mobile equipment, mobile equipment fires, and unplanned movements of mobile equipment.

As part of the process by which regulators are updating and revising MDGs, Mine Design Guidelines (MDG) will gradually be phased out in favour of Technical Reference Guides (TRG).

The Meta family of apps—Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger—request the most data from smartphone users, according to research from data centre company TRG Datacenters.

TRG Datacenters says personal online data is increasingly less secure. Citing data from Statista, there were 6.1 million data breaches in 2022 with over 700 million private files from individuals and businesses leaking online.

Apps installed on smartphones syphon personal data to function. Research has shown that the average smartphone user has over 80 apps installed on their device at any given moment.

TikTok, the most popular app by downloads on the iOS store, also requests only 11 permissions, 3 fewer than that of rival social media sites Facebook and Instagram.

Apple and Google just need to revoke these apps from the app stores.

Regensburg: I used to love this small city with its faux Roman temples and villas. Today an autobahn whizzes you around the city with nothing to see apart from a large statue of a nude man standing on his head.

In Wels the Stadtplatz is claimed to be one of the most beautiful squares in Austria. The Square acquired its present predominantly Baroque appearance in the 18th century. So far my holiday photos are of the grotty Airport Country Hotel (day 1) and the bus station (Stadtplatz). Like most bored youths the bus station is the hang-out place for a few gobby teenagers. The braver ones hurl a few comments about the affrontery of us taking photos of the bus station but shut up quickly when challenged. Same sad story wherever you go.

We head optimistically more or less south-east hoping for signs and make Maribor in time to check into the Hotel City Map[1] and head for the highly recommended Jack & Joe’s. They don’t get many British visitors and in the absence of us having any Slovenian language skills German is the common tongue. “Do you have any vegetarian dishes”?  “Yes, we have chicken and fish, where have you come from”?  Eventually a picture book menu is found; soon followed by generous portions of delicious bami goering and chilled pints of the local Favorit beer.

From the hotel back into town along the banks of the Drava River, which in the early evening abounds with joggers, dog walkers and cyclists. Past the last remaining Judgement Tower, the world’s oldest producing vine[2], up some dark alleys leading to Glavni trg and the statue of the six saints who saved the city during the plague. On a Tuesday evening the city centre is buzzing with lively bars in the streets off the main square. Beers in the street cafes of Postna ul. Across the way Patrick’s Irish Bar is showing England getting trounced by Hungary. Our great gift to the world.

Early morning I like to watch the city come to life so retrace yesterday’s walk into town down dark paths in the park and back across the often rebuilt footbridg. In 1885 Maribor built the first traffic connection between the city and Studenci. On 13/09/1903 the high water level carried away the footbridge but a year later a new one was built. On the second day of the war in 1941 the Yugoslav army blew up the bridge, which was renovated and used by the occupying forces until 1945. When the hydroelectric power station was commissioned the water level rose and carried away the bridge again. A new wider bridge was built in 1948 and was replaced again in 2009 with the current, still standing, bridge. 

A swan sits with her four signets. Every passerby stops to say good morning to them and to take a photo. I do the same. At Cafe Evard old men sit for their first strong coffee of the day and first acrid cigarette. The waitress is already grumpy and displeased with her lot. Eavesdropping it is now that I learn that Buzet is pronounced Tzb; Pozane, Nzp and Vranja, Jnrv. You get the picture – take out all the vowels and read from right to left.

Ulica je važnija od zgrade

Zagrebačka Šubićeva ulica možda najbolje izgleda kad se, iz pozicije pješaka, gleda s križanja sa Zvonimirovom i to u smjeru sjevera. S te točke, osim dvije bolnice na brdima, u daljini, iza Kvaternikovog trga, može se razaznati i zabat historicističke Kuće Ž (slovo je stilizirano na fasadi), one na tramvajskoj stanici na Maksmirskoj. Taj je detalj zanimljiviji od, primjerice, neispravnog rasvjetnog stupa na Kvatriću koji ima glumiti nekakav orijentir upravo u odnosu sa Šubićevom, no to ne radi. Pitanje je godine kada će biti uklonjen, kao i promjenjeno otužno uređenje čitavog trga. Ono što će ostati su   prostorni odnosi Kvaternikova trga i Šubićeve ulice koje s budućim preuređenjem treba dodatno potencirati. Šubićeva je i vizualno najvažnija ulica tog bitnog gradskog trga, a taj primat promijeniti se može samo otvaranjem trga prema Heinzelovoj, preduvjet čega bi bilo rušenje bivše zgrade kupališta, što u budućnosti i nije isključeno i to unatoč sadašnjem spomeničkom statusu zgrade koji se može dovesti u pitanje.  

Šubićeva je šira i važnija i od većine okolnih ulica, a čak i natprosječno duga za donjogradsku ulicu. Ni arhitektura joj nije jednoobrazna, što inače katakterizira mnoge zagrebačke ulice. U slici Zagreba, Šubićeva ima i nekoliko bitnih pojedinačnih kulturnih momenata. Primjerice, zgrada Hrvatskog liječničkog doma arhitekata Frane Cote i Zvonimra Požgaja iz 1936. godine ističe se po neobičnom tretmanu pročelja i nenametljivoj vrhunskoj arhitekturi; Fedor Kritovac odrastao je u zgradi pored Češkog doma; zasjedanje Sabora i proglašenje državne neovisnosti Druge hrvatske republike dogodilo se u za tu ulicu lagano predimenzioniranoj zgradi INA-e izgrađenoj na mjestu nekadašnje Tvornice Sila - parceli na kojoj će prije izgradnje INA-e izložbu postaviti grupa Biafra; a reklamni slonić bivše tvornice Gorica primjer je odličnog dizajna, dio industrijeske baštine i jedna od popularnih identitetskih točaka i ulice i kvarta. Sve to samo su dijelovi mozaika Ulica Pavla Šubića, koja se tako zove od 1928. godine.

Spomenuti pogled kroz dubinu Šubićeve će uvijek biti atraktivan, a to bi, iz pozicije pješaka, iskustveno, mogla i trebala biti i sama ta ulica. To, međutim, danas nije slučaj. Karakter Šubićeve nije onaj koji poziva na zadržavanje, ne nudi tu mogućnost ni sporadično, s izuzetkom parkića na uglu sa Zvonimirovom. Šubićeva ulica nije ni posebno zdrava: od plinova do buke. Njena glavna značajka je znatni promet i gotovo potpuna podređenost automobilima. Pritom se ulica s manje više istim tretmanom u punoj dužini, istovremeno poprilično razlikuje u svom sjevernom i južnom dijelu. Potonji će vjerojatno još dugo zadržati dominantno prometnu ulogu, dok onaj sjeverni ima više izgleda ranije promijeniti program i približiti se ulozi koja bi potencirala urbanitet, otvarajući, između ostaloga i mogućnost zadržavanja. Rječju ona može i treba postati (i) pješačka zona i to kao poveznica tri bitne točke: Kvaternikova trga, tržnice i novog bloka Badel te (jednom) pješačke Martićeve ulice koja bi novu pješačku zonu povezala s onom starom oko glavnog zagrebačkog trga.

Promišljanje alternativa za Šubićevu na tome tragu postoji već više od pola stoljeća, pa i od kada je započela radikalna transformacija čitave zone iz industrijske u stambeno-poslovnu, zapravo od kada je nekad periferni dio grada postao ugodni gradski kvart. Jedan od najvažnijih iskoraka pritom je formiranje Parka Bratola Kašića, doslovno na mjestu nekadašnjih industrijskih hala Tvornice Elka. Industrija je nekad zauzimala i mjesto sadašnje tržnice. Park je nazmjenjiv kao društvena točka kvarta i funkcionira daleko bolje od Kvaternikovog trga.

Danas prostor zone Kvatrić ima sve preduvjete da preuzme značajniju ulogu središta istočnog dijela centra Zagreba, ali mu nedostaje pješačke infrastrukture koja bi iz kvartovski relevatnog, podigla njegovu važnost na razinu grada i time čitavom pješačkom Zagrebu dala malo veće, primjerenije, mjerilo.      

Utoliko su i mogućnosti Šubićeve bitno oblježene kontekstom središta istočnog centra grada. Kvatrenikov trg nominalno je nositelj te uloge, iako je zbog promašaja u organizaciji, oblikovanju i načinu upravljanja ne ispunjava na odgovarajući način.

U zoni trga, najživlje je mjesto tržnica. Osim oblikovne nadogradnje te dvije važne točke, za pravi iskorak ključna je bolja poveznica između njih, ali i s trećom neodvojivom točkom tj. sada nedovršenim blokom sa zapadne strane Šubićeve.    

Najavljena izgradnja “Bloka Badel”može biti povod za takav iskorak. Ne ulazeći u sam blok, što bi sve mogao biti, a to uključuje i značajniju urbanu prazninu, njegov program je po prvođenju (međunarodnog) arhitektonsko-urbanističkog natje��aja 2012. godine sada zadan i za prepostaviti je da će se kao takav jednom i izgraditi. Nemoguće je predvidjeti kad bi to moglo biti, no nova izgradnja uvelike će transfomirirati lokaciju i doslovno iz temelja promijeniti njen izgled, ali i identitet, načine upotrebe i značenje za kvart i grad. Uspješnost te transformacije ovisit će i o tipu komunikacije koja će potencirati ili zanemarivati mogućnost povezivanja s kontekstom – u prvom redu ulicom. Uspjeh neće biti (samo) u (svemu) onome što će blok udomiti, već načinu na koji će se otvoriti. Posrednik tih odnosa je ulica i nebrojene mogućnosti pristupa u odnosu na onaj kakav je sad.

Baš kako bi pri svakom budućem uređenju Kvatrića treba strateški promišljati čitavu mikrozonu do Martićeve, tako bi prilikom izgradnje Bloka Badel trebalo već u startu računati s prilagođenim programima i to svih obližnjih ulica. U prvome redu zbog organizacije pojedinih elemenata samoga bloka, kao što su kolni ulazi i pristupne komunikacije sadržajima koji će biti komercijalni i javni.

Za promjenu sadašnjeg programa ulice, što može biti brzo i lako, u prilog ide i činjenica da se u neposrednoj blizini već sad nalaze dvije javne garaže (ispod Kvaternikogov trga i u Martićevoj). Automobili već sad ne bi uopće trebali parkirati na dijelu Šubićeve od Martićeve do Kvatrića. I postojeća tramvajska mreža ide na ruku naglašenije pješačke uloge tog dijela ulice. Korak dalje je sve ono što još ta ulica može biti.

Šubićeva drvored danas ima samo na malom dijelu uz tržnicu, a nekad ga je imala i u svom južnom dijelu. Uklonjen je za potrebe širenja tramvajske mreže i kolnika u vremenu snažnog uzleta kulture automobila, što karakterizira ulicu i u sadašnjosti. Kapacitet ulice je takav da u svom sjevernom dijelu, sada otužni (više puta podsađivani) drvored platana uz ogradu placa, može biti zasađen i sa zapadne strane ulice.

Uvođenje dodatnog drvoreda, ozelenjavanje javnog prostora, nužno je i u sklopu prilagođavanja klimatskim promjenama. Nijedna novouređena gradska ulica s kapacitetom da drvored ima, ne bi trebala biti bez njega.

Konačno, jedan od argumenata koji bi mogao ići u prilog novoj Šubićevoj je po najavama, a i sukladno minimalnim standardima, nastojanje da se Tržnica Kvatrić konačno natkrije. Tako i treba biti. Drugo je pitanje kad će se to dogoditi, a promjena je imanentna. Ona se neće dogoditi brzo, ali će se dogoditi jer to nalažu standardi. Bilo bi dobro da se tu pritom dogodi arhitektura koja će ponudit više od pukog krova. I to je moguće kad se povise očekivanja. Šteta je i da neke od gradskih tržnica nemaju popodnevne ili večernje programe vezane uz incijalnu svrhu, ovdje npr. (gradski) tjedni popodnevni sajam cvijeća, kao novi i gospodarski poticajni sadržaj. To bi značilo upravljati, nuditi i graditi mjesto i grad. Arhitektura s očekivanjima dala bi tržnici na važnosti, posjećenosti, možda i ispravila sve dosadašnje arhitektonske propuste. Dodatni sadržaji dali bi joj još i više. A takvo mjesto treba i ulicu koja nije samo parkiralište.    

Ulica je važnija od zgrade, zapisao je američki teoretičar arhitekture Paul Goldberger. Zgrada, uostalom, postaje dijelom grada tek posredstvom ulice.

Što će sve udomiti Blok Badel jednom kad nastane i zaživi ne ostavlja dvojbe oko određenog ekskluziviteta. Neoliberalna demoracija, piše Noam Chomsky, umjesto građana proizvodi potrošače. Umjesto zajednica, proizvodi shopping centre. Iako se ovdje neće raditi o klasičnom trgovačkom centru, zadaća ulice nije ništa manje važna. Ulica utoliko ima i ne samo gradotvorni, već i ogroman demokratski značaj.

Blok Badel, odabrano rješenje

U slučaju Šubićeve, scenarij je trojak. Od toga da se neće dogoditi ništa, preko toga da se znatnim proširenjem nogostupa na račun sadašnjih parkirališnih kapaciteta stvori pješaku nakloniji prostor koji bi mogao uključivati i novi drvored, klupe i drugu komunalnu opremu, do radikalne promjene programa. One koja bi iz dominatno prometne, Šubićevu pretvorila u naglašeno pješačku ulicu, eventualno s umirenim automobilskim prometom s obzirom na ulazno-izlazne rampe garaže na Kvaternikovom trgu (a u budućnosti bez rampi na tome mjestu i prometa). Ni najzahtjevnije od ovih rješenja u osnovi nije teško, ali je u Zagrebu, pa će se na to čekati nepotrebno dugo.

Blaine is definitely jealous of this whole Boni system. Kurt picked a restaurant called Sarajevo 84, which also has a venue in Ljubljana, and the amount of food that he gets for a small price is insane.

“This makes me want to start studying again,” Blaine jokes. He has to pay full price, although prices in Slovenia also aren’t that high all the time. “But I think my time at Yale was enough.”

“What did you study again?”

“Business,” Blaine answers.

“And Quinn did the same, right?”

Blaine nods.

“I am also glad to be working, though,” Blaine says, “College was fun, but this is the real world. And it brought me here to Slovenia.”

“What exactly will you do?”

“I will just help out. I am only starting in my dad’s company,” Blaine explains, “Higher ranking members will do most of the heavy lifting. I just need to be here to represent the family and all the formal stuff. Maybe one day I will lead a part, like my brother Cooper, but I’m not there yet.”

“That’s ambitious,” Kurt says, “I like ambitious people. It’s worth the occasional grind, because I hope it pays off.”

“Do you want Broadway, is that why you’re in New York?”

Kurt nods eagerly.

“It’s a shot in the dark, I know, but I hope to make it.”

“I am sure this extra work at UoL will look good.”

They move on to other topics and when they finish their lunch, they walk back to the pier. There’s a small beach area, but it’s too cold in February.

“We can come back when it’s hotter,” Kurt suggest, “There are little beaches everywhere. I like the beach. Swimming and tanning, it’s great.”

“Maybe back home you can visit Los Angeles.”

“Yeah.”

Blaine thinks about Kurt at the beach, lying on a towel with fancy sunglasses and getting tan. Or him getting into the sea, wearing nothing but designer trunks, because that’s Kurt’s forte. He wonders what Kurt would look like, shirtless and shiny from the sunscreen.

Wait.

“Blaine?”

“Huh?” Blaine gets pulled out his thoughts.

“Shall we make a final stroll and head to Piran?” Kurt suggests.

“Y-yeah, sure.”

Blaine’s standing in the middle of Tartinijev trg and he’s making one big panorama photo of all the gorgeous buildings surrounding the square. He definitely understands why tourists come to this place.

After Kurt and Blaine made enough photo’s, they walk to the hill with St. George's Parish Church.

It’s a beautiful spot and you can see the Italian and Croatian coastlines from it. You also get a better view of the beach and the city.

“We can get an even better view,” Kurt says. He’s reading something on his phone. “The Bell tower has 146 steps and it gives a great aerial view of the plaza.”

Kurt was right and the view is so worth it. If they thought that the view from the church was great, than this is outstanding. They make a lot of photo’s, also with each other. Blaine can’t wait to send them to Quinn. He’s been telling her all about Kurt.

They then walk towards the medieval walls, a little bit outside of the centre. It’s a climb and luckily it isn’t too hot in February, so it’s fine. A ticket to walk the walls only costs €1.

Eventually, they go back to the centre and they explore some more. Just like Koper, there are a lot of smaller roads to explore. There’s also a lot of Venetian architecture and Blaine hears a lot of Italian speech.

The boulevard is another highlight and there are a lot of seafood restaurants here. Unfortunately for Kurt, there is no Boni in Piran.

“Blasphemy!” he says as he scrolls through his Boni app.

“Isn’t there a four hour interval between Boni?”

“Yes, but I wanted to check for later, but alas, no Boni.”

“We can also go back to Ljubljana and grab dinner there.”

“That sounds like a great idea.”

“Arrivederci, Pirano!” Kurt yells as he accelerates.

“I liked it. Both Koper and Piran were really nice. I’d like to come back here.” When it’s warmer, so they can go to the beach.

“With Quinn?”

“Hm?”

“Go there with Quinn?”

“Oh. Right. Possibly.”

He hadn’t thought of that yet. He hasn’t made concrete plans and Quinn won’t be here till April anyway. They do want to explore nature, since Quinn loves hiking and there are a lot of mountains more up north, but Blaine’s only gotten to Ljubljana a few days ago. He needs time to find stuff.

Luckily, Kurt can help him. He and take Kurt everywhere to make sure it’s good. Blaine suggests it.

“You want to take me on potential dating places to visit with your girlfriend to test if they are date-worthy?” he sounds confused.

“Well, when you put it that way it is indeed a bit weird.”

“Blaine, no worries, I’d love to travel with you. Today was fun and I needed it, so thank you.”

They run into Sunil in Ljubljana and when Kurt tells him that they’re looking for another place to eat, Sunil happily accompanies him to his favourite Chinese restaurant.

“I discovered this one on my second day here in the city and their dim sum is to die for!”

The three of them walk towards the restaurant and Sunil has his arm slung over Kurt and he listens to Kurt recounting what happened today and Blaine feels bad. He wanted it to be just the two of them. Sunil is cool, but dinner with Kurt would be a great way to end a day with Kurt.

It’s rude, since Sunil and Kurt clearly like each other.

Blaine wonders if they also like each other. That makes him uneasy, which in turn makes him feel more uneasy. It’s kind of  homophobic to not like the idea of Kurt with another guy. Oh, and Sunil with another guy as well. He didn’t think he’d be uncomfortable with it. Guys should like guys. Nothing bad there.

Blaine chastises himself and he swears to not let his discomfort show. He likes Kurt as a friend, so he needs to be a good friend in return. Kurt deserves that

IDOLiSH7 REUNION LIVE VIEWING RECAP

I once said that I had no interest in idol anime. And then I got into IDOLiSH7. I then said that I still wouldn’t go to their concert. And then I got tickets for the REUNION live viewing. I then said that I don’t think I’ll scream very much, if at all. Yesterday, I slapped past me three times in the face as I defied all of these predictions.

I’m gonna skip out on some of the details of what happened since most people have already shared all that good stuff, so this post will be a lot more personal instead—what had the biggest impact on me, what made me go crazy, and my general impressions and feels. More like a long diary entry for future me, I guess ^^

As soon as the first song, “Natsu Shiyouze,” started, I literally started tearing up. I used to be such a big Kpop fan and loved SHINee so, so much. Their concerts were the only idol concerts I’d ever attended, and I thought I’d never ever watch an idol concert in my life again. But as soon as “Natsu Shiyouze” started, I felt this overwhelming rush of excitement that I could only ever experience when watching a live concert… I thought of SHINee and the way I felt when I saw them live, and then I thought of Jonghyun, and I started crying. But then they quickly turned to happy tears… I was just… so thankful that I found and got into IDOLiSH7, and so thankful that i7 gave me the chance to experience this feeling again… “Natsu Shiyouze” is such a fun and upbeat song, yet so many emotions, a mixture of happy and sad, were rushing through my mind already. It’s a complex and bittersweet feeling, but in that moment I was truly happy :’)

The sad sentimental stuff only lasted for one song, so the rest is just lots and lots of fangirling and screaming xD

I am in awe at the length the voice actors go to embody and present their characters. Just… it was a perfect balance of portraying their roles and also being themselves. This concert allowed me to appreciate the voice actors for who they are—more than simply “so-and-so character’s VA” ^^ I still remember the hype I felt when they all assembled themselves to replicate the REUNION poster image, with Onoken holding the huge flag… And also… seeing ZOOL standing up there with them was so askjdfh;askjdfhj;sad I’m so happy for them omg ;_____;

IDOLiSH7 (the group) is just so full of fun and full of life, and watching them together never fails to put a smile on my face. They’re so lively and energetic and they’re all absolute sweethearts. The most adorable and sweetest family ever <333 Every member had their own moments to shine (which I’ll get into in detail later), and it was literally impossible to not love every single one of these talented dorks ;~; <333

TRIGGER were just… legendary. They literally OWNED the stage. The amount of charisma and stage presence they have is just AMAZING. As a group, they were probably the strongest and most stable live singers, in my opinion, and DEFINITELY the most LETHAL in fanservice. Holy smokes were they ON FIRE. THEY’RE SEXY AND THEY KNOW IT, AND BOY DO THEY SELL IT. THEY OOZED SEX APPEAL. I’M ALREADY TRIGGER-BIASED BUT THEY DEFINITELY STOOD OUT THE MOST AND LEFT THE BIGGEST IMPRESSION ON ME. THEIR MERE PRESENCE IS ENOUGH TO HAVE ME SCREAMING.

Re:vale didn’t give as much fanservice as the other groups, but they were still KINGS. Their interactions and whenever they spoke in their characters’ voices oh my gosh as;dkjfha;skjfhas;j <33333 And the VAs were just… so “senior” and “experienced,” like actual SENPAIS. So much respect ;___;

And ZOOL… oh my gosh I’m just SO HAPPY FOR THEM. I cheered extra loud for them because I was so scared that some people wouldn’t, so I wanted to make sure that they got the love and support they deserved. But ak;dsjfha;skdj everyone was so supportive of them; the screams were SO LOUD and it made me so, so, so incredibly happy ;_____; They were badass and also had amazing stage charisma, almost like a Kpop idol group!!! And I’m glad they shuffled the lines so that Minami and Torao got to sing in their earlier songs, too ^^

Gonna list some of the highlights and parts that left the most lasting impressions and got me the most excited during the concert (not in chronological order):

-        “HOSHIKUZU MAGIC.” OMG. WHEN THE STARS APPEARED AND HOPE APPEARED WE ALL LITERALLY SCREECHED. I CAN’T BELIEVE WE GOT TO SEE HOPE AND CURSE MOVE. HOPE AND CURSE MOVED. THEY LOOK ETHEREAL AND JUST AS;DKJFHA;SKDJFH;SAJ I NEED THAT ANIMATED VIDEO IN HD SO I CAN WATCH AND SCREAM OVER IT REPEATEDLY. AND OMG THE VAS WEARING THE ETERNO OUTFITS A;SKJDFH;ASKJFH;AJSKD IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?!?!? IS THIS REAL LIFE?!?!?!? AND ALL THE FABRICS REPRESENTING ALL THE STARS USED TO SEPARATE THE TWO WHILE THEY WERE PERFORMING. AND OMG THAT ENDING WHEN HOPE LEAPT INTO CURSE’S ARMS WITH TEARS IN HIS EYES? WE ALL LOST IT. I think this may have been my loudest screech in the entire concert. My friend was losing her sanity and I even had to pat her to calm her down omg xDDD I honestly was expecting them to announce a Hoshimeguri movie or something, since they animated a video already, but alas, one can dream xDDD (still not giving up HOPE hehe)

-        TRIGGER’S NEW SONG. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. I BARELY SURVIVED THE SNEAK PEEKS WE GOT OF THE MV. HOW AM I GONNA COPE WHEN THE FULL MV DROPS. THERE ARE WOLF HOWLS AND LOTS OF HIGH NOTES AND OMG IT LOOKS AND SOUNDS AMAZING AS;DKJFH;ASKJFHD;AJSK I NEED THIS SONG AND VIDEO IN MY LIFE. TRIGGER FANS (ESPECIALLY GAKU FANS)… *SCAR VOICE* BE PREPAAAAAAARED.

-        Massun pulling Onoken to the middle again because he’s the centre omg he sounded EXACTLY LIKE IORI and that’s TOTALLY SOMETHING IORI WOULD DO A;SDKJFHA;SKJFHAS;J

-        Massun angrily throwing the towel on the ground OMGGGGG HE’S SO ADORABLE IT’S LIKE HE’S THROWING A TANTRUM AS;DKJFHA;SKJF TOO CUUUUUTE DX

-        SUBARU PIGGY-BACKED ONOKEN TOWARDS THE END OMG MY TOURIKU BROSHIP FEELS ARE GOING THROUGH THE ROOF THEY’RE SO ADORABLE ASDKJFH;ASKJ I’M SO GLAD THE CAMERA CAUGHT THAT BLESSED MOMENT

-        There was a part when Re:vale were walking down the long part of the stage together and people around me were saying “play the wedding song play the wedding song” LOLLLLL like they aren’t married already ;P

-        Re:vale and TRIGGER made us do the “kanpai” thing twice each, and I ended up really, really needing to go to the toilet LOL but I just couldn’t leave? No I ain’t leaving during speaking segments and I was too scared to go even during the encore break for fear of missing out on anything as;dkjfhas;kj D:

-        Sogo’s VA twirling around in the frilly blue outfit with the big bow on the back omg SO CUTE. Tachibana also twirled around quite a few times during Re:vale’s performance xD Their outfits were all so beautiful. Especially the Eterno outfits omg the amount of detail and lace and sparkles and the gloves ahhhhh *___* But it must have been really hot and heavy, since they took them off pretty quickly after performing “Hoshikuzu Magic” only >_<

-        Speaking of outfits… TRIGGER’s outfits. So, so, SO COOL. Especially that one pink outfit of Tenn’s omg I can’t get enough of the criss-cross at the back and the long flowy skirt thing as;djkfha;sjkfh;asj it’s like an upgraded version of his Heavenly Visitor outfit and I LOVE IT *_____*

-        “ZONE OF OVERLAP” FULL VERSION. THAT IS ALL. *grabby hands*

-        I’d already been spoiled that Ryu would start off singing “Shine on the Sea” by himself, but it was still SO EMOTIONAL seeing the other two members rising up and joining him onstage ;___; Listening to this song and “In the meantime” seriously made me feel this sharp pang of guilt because moments ago I was screeching for ZOOL and then TRIGGER had to come out and make me remember all the terrible stuff that happened in Part 3 and I just a;sdjkfhas;kj Dx

-        “Daybreak Interlude” was AMAZING. THE WAY TRIGGER ENTERED FROM THE BACK AND WALKED THROUGH THE AUDIENCE SECTION. THEY COMPLETELY OWNED THAT STAGE AND IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST EPIC PERFORMANCES OF THE ENTIRE CONCERT.

-        I can’t remember which song it was, but there was a part where MEZZO were pretending to look really sad so they were kneeling together with their heads down and they looked like lost puppies omg awwwww a;sdkjfh;asjkhsa;j MUST ADOPT.

-        During the encore songs, everyone was on carts and grouped randomly or on one by himself. And they grouped Momo with the twins and it was the most adorable thing ever xD Soma and Onoken were being all sweet and cute and putting their arms around each other’s shoulders, and Momo’s just… awkwardly standing there third-wheeling xDDD

-        Nishiyama and Eguchi put their arms around each other’s shoulders OMGGGGGG I JUST WANT MINA AND NAGI TO BE FRIENDS ALREADY AS;DFKJHAS;DJK I hope this is a sign ;~;

-        There was one point where Saito Soma looked at Onoken with THE MOST SOFT AND LOVING EYES EVER OMG AS;DKJFH;ASJKHF;AJSD IT’S JUST LIKE THE WAY TENN WOULD LOOK AT RIKU ;_____; It reminds me of that one Tenn sprite from the game where he has his hand on his chin and his eyes kinda soften a;skdjhf;aksjh;asj SWEETEST TWIN MOMENT OF THE DAY DX

-        SAITO SOMA’S “DA ME~” OMGGGGGGG. JUST THINKING BACK ON IT STILL MAKES ME FRIGGIN BLUSH LIKE MAD. I CAN’T EVEN REMEMBER WHAT HE ASKED US. ALL I REMEMBER IS THAT THE ANSWER WAS AN OBVIOUS YES/WANT, AND THEN HE A;KSDJFH;AJSK DOES THAT POSE AND MAKES THAT EXPRESSION AND USES THAT VOICE AND EFFING DARES TO GO “DA ME~” AND INSTANTLY AHHILIATE MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE A;SDKJFH;ASKJFH;ASJK

-        Re:vale said that they were a family ;___; I can’t remember it very clearly so this may not be exactly accurate, but something about how they were the parents, IDOLiSH7/MEZZO were the cute children (cue i7’s cute expressions), TRIGGER were the cool children (cue TRG’s sexy poses), and ZOOL were the bad/naughty kids (cue ZOOL doing gangster hand gestures LOLLLLL). And they even debated who was the dad and who was the mum ahhhhh what a happy family ;_____; ZOOL have been officially adopted by Re:vale. You are now part of the family. There’s no leaving. Ever >:D

Okay now I’m gonna go by characters/VAs and talk (more like yell) a bit about my overall impressions hehe prepare for lots more caps~

MASSUN. OMG. OKAY I REMEMBER WATCHING A FEW I7 VIDEOS WITH THE SEIYUU AND SAYING “HEY IORI’S VA IS ACTUALLY PRETTY CUTE.” TODAY? I EFFING FELL FOR HIM. HARD. OMG HE’S SO GORGEOUS?! HE LITERALLY FEELS LIKE A PRINCE A;SKDJFH;AKSJHAS He’s so in-character during the whole live that I always wonder if he’s actually serious and sensible all the time, but no my friend says he’s just trying to channel Iori xD And omg all the Ioriku interactions ;___; THIS MAN IS BOTH BEAUTIFUL AND CUTE AND TALENTED. WHAT A THREAT. I LOVE HIM. OFFICIAL NEW SEIYUU CRUSH.

Yamato was my least-favourite character initially because I don’t like green and I don’t like glasses (SORRY ONII-SAN) xDDD I’ve grown to love him as I progressed with the story (and fell deeper into i7 hell), but today? ONII-SAN SLAYED. OMG SHIRAI SOUNDS EFFORTLESSLY LIKE YAMATO AND ALL THE FINGER POSES AND EXPRESSIONS AND THE GOOD NIGHT AWESOME AS;KDJFH;ASKJFH;SAJ AND EVERY TIME HE REFERS TO HIMSELF AS “ONII-SAN” I AS;DJKFH;AKJSFH;AJ I YELL

Wingu is another one that seems to sound effortlessly like his character omg HE’S SO CUTE?!?!? AND SO SINCERE?!?!?!? Like he’s just… always smiling and energetic and happy, like he’s truly enjoying himself, and it’s like you can just SEE Mitsuki’s soul in him omg. And he also has this strangely comforting vibe where you feel so safe and relaxed in his presence? Yet hyped up at the same time? I can’t describe it but omg perfect Mikki a;skdjfh;askjdfh;asdjkhfjas

KENN OMG. I didn’t really know him that well or care much for him beforehand; I just thought he did a really good job as Tamaki and really adored his sexy singing voice. But today? DUDE HE’S THE CUTEST THING EVER OMG. HE’S LITERALLY LIKE… A REAL-LIFE TAMAKI WITH HIS CHILDISH INNOCENCE AND ENERGY. LIKE AN EXCITED CHILD RUNNING ALL OVER THE PLACE. HE WAS HAVING SO MUCH FUN AND I JUST. A;SKDJFH;ASKJFHD;J TOO PRECIOUS ;_____; And he was so good at finding cameras and giving bright smiles a;sdjkfha;skj he was one of the most lively and energetic and really kept the mood going <3 He’s also a REALLY good live singer. Among the top 3, in my opinion. I ended up loving and appreciating him a lot more than expected <33333

Awwwww Abeshi as So-chan ahhhhh he’s such a sweetheart? MEZZO were practically on fire with their fan service and there were just so many adorable and sweet moments between them. You can just see how much fun he’s having, especially with KENN, and he was just such a cutie throughout?!?!? He had a bit of that shy and reserved So-chan vibe whenever he spoke but you could really see him give his all whenever he performed <333

Nagi ;_____; I feel like every time Eguchi did anything, everyone screamed extra loudly, probably because of all the Part 4 feels ;_____; He didn’t speak in Nagi’s voice or accent very much, but whenever he did, he just… stole all the attention xDDD SO ADORABLE OMG. AND HE’S SO FRIGGIN TALL ASD;KJFA;SHFKJDASHF;J TOWERING OVER THEM ALL XDDD AND I CAN’T BELIEVE HE MADE US ASK HIM “ARE YOU HAPPY” OMGGGGG AS;KDJFHA;SJKFH;SADJ WHY DX

Onoken was the most ADORABLE THING EVER. He was seriously JUST LIKE RIKU throughout the entire concert. He was an actual ball of sunshine, super upbeat, energetic, cute, and just so good at leading everyone a;skdjfh;askjfh;asjk I don’t know if he’s just being in-character for Riku or if he’s always like this but omg I LOVED HIM. HE WAS THE LIFE OF THE CONCERT, SERIOUSLY. His singing voice is seriously like an angel, too!!!!!!!!! One of the best live singers of the entire cast. He was just the most precious and adorable thing ever and literally LIT UP the arena with his voice and smile and presence and just a;sdjfkhas;kjfhsa;j PERFECT.

WACCHAN AHHHHHHH I REALLY LIKE THIS GUY? I don’t know that much about him but I’ve liked him for a while (ever since I got to know him through Yuri on Ice) :O I dunno, like he just seems like SUCH a sincere and nice man? And omg I love it when he puts on Gaku’s super deep and sexy voice a;skjdfhs;aj *___* He’s also a really stable live singer and a really good performer <3 And during the end when he looked like he was gonna tear up omg as;kdjfha;skjfha;sj DON’T CRY AHHHHH But omg when he said “sobaya ja nee” ASJKDFH;ASJKFH WHY ARE YOU SO CUTE?!?!?

SKIPPING TENN/SAITO SOMA AND LEAVING HIM FOR LAST (FOR OBVIOUS REASONS)

SATOTAKU WAS… JUST LIKE RYU OMG. He had that super pure and bright kind of joy on his face throughout the entire thing. You could just see and feel how happy he was to be there ;A; Another actual ray of sunshine and just… he has the brightest and happiest smile and I felt so happy seeing him so happy and just a;ksdjfh;askjdhf;aj WHY ARE THEY ALL SO PURE AND GOOD HUH?!?!? HE REALLY GAVE HIS ALL FOR EVERY LINE OF EVERY SONG, AND THE SINCERITY IN EVERY ONE OF HIS ACTIONS AND WORDS IS JUST INCREDIBLE

Momo’s VA didn’t really give as much fanservice, but whenever he spoke in Momo’s voice… CUTENESS OVERLOAD!!! It’s so difficult to imagine such a cute and childish voice coming out of his VA, but he just… AS;KJDFHA;SKJ HE DID THE “HAPPY~” THING TWICE (ONCE AT THE START AND ONCE AT THE END) WHILE TWIRLING AROUND AND AHHHH SO CUTEEEE OMG ;___; AND YESSSSS HE SAID “YUKI IKEMEN~!” WHEN YUKI’S VA ASKED HIM TO AS;DKJFH;ASJKFHA;SJK

Tachibana was such a blessing omg you could also see how happy he was to be there and how dedicated he was to the concert ;_____; He gave SO much fanservice, and every time he spoke in Yuki’s voice we all just collectively lost it. HIROSE YUYA OMG. DUDE THIS GUY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A KPOP IDOL OR SOMETHING. HIS SINGING IS AMAZING AND HIS DANCING AND STAGE CHARISMA OMG. He kind of commands attention as soon as he opens his mouth a;skdjfhs;aj AND OMG HE SPOKE IN HARU’S VOICE SO MUCH. AND SO EFFORTLESSLY. HE JUST PULLS OFF HIS CHARACTER SO WELL AND EVERY TIME HE EFFORTLESSLY SWITCHES TO HARU’S VOICE I JUST A;SDJFHA;SKDJFH;ASJ WHY IS HE SO GOOD?!?!?!? HE’S SO YOUNG AND HE’S ALREADY THIS GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES. SERIOUSLY. MAD RESPECT.

Subaru just… It warms my heart seeing him looking so genuinely happy from the bottom of his heart to be there at the live ;_____; You can just hear his joy and pride for his members whenever he speaks, and he’s REALLY good at getting the crowd hyped. He’s like ZOOL’s personal cheerleader when he’s not singing or something?!? And when he got the whole audience to say/chant ZOOL’s name… I may just be reading too much into this and filling in the gaps myself, but it’s almost like he’s just… taking in all the cheers and living in the moment where he can feel that everyone really does accept, appreciate, and support ZOOL. That all this is real—they really are standing there as part of the main cast and everyone really does love them. It just looks like it means so much to him, and I feel so warm and fuzzy seeing him looking so proud and happy asd;lfha;skjfs I’M PROUD OF YOU TOO ;_____;

NISHIYAMA. EXCUSE ME MR. MINAMI WHO ALLOWED YOU. WHO ENABLED YOU. OMG. So I was warned beforehand that a lot of people were swept away by Haruka and Minami’s VAs and prepared myself. But boy oh boy, if I thought I could prepare myself and become immune to the greatness that is Nishiyama, I was DEAD WRONG. AN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT EMBODIMENT OF EVERYTHING I LOVE ABOUT MINAMI. THE POSES, THE EXPRESSIONS, THE MOVEMENTS, THE GESTURES, AND THE FRIGGIN VOICE. I’M A SUCKER FOR MINAMI’S SPEAKING VOICE, AND HIS VA JUST KEEPS DOING IT AND MAKING ME FREAKING FEEL THINGS. RUDE!!!!! HE’S AN ABOSLUTE TEASEEEEEE AND JUST… I DUNNO IF IT WAS THE EYELINER OR THE HAIR OR WHATEVER, BUT I FELL FOR HIM HARD. ANOTHER NEW SEIYUU CRUSH RIGHT THERE. Torao’s VA seriously took me by surprise because I really was not expecting him to look like that!!! I was expecting a big gruff man or something, but he’s so… smol and kinda cute? <3 But then he lowers his voice and IT’S STILL THE DEEP AND SEXY TORA VOICE OMG?!? He didn’t seem to give that much fanservice either, but he was clearly having a blast and getting SUPER HYPED UP during all of ZOOL’s performances, which was a joy to watch ^^

As anyone (including future me reading back on this) can see, the biggest highlight of the live for me was obviously Saito Soma lol. I basically came home screaming incoherently about him and announcing that I was going to marry this man LOL (jks jks). I also secured Massun as my other infatuation, and gained two more new seiyuu crushes in Nishiyama and Hirose lmaooooo xDDD These four had the biggest impact on me thirst-wise, and Onoken, Soma, and KENN impressed me the most performance-wise.

I’ll DEFINITELY be going again next year (if possible). And this time I’m gonna want to go to BOTH days. And this time I’ll have one of those cool penlights D:< I still can’t believe I actually ended up at a Nanalive live viewing, considering my mindset before I caved and watched the anime and eventually downloaded the game late last year. I guess the phrase “never say never” really is true xD

I wasn’t even there at MetLife Dome, but it’s so easy to forget that you’re only staring at a screen when the entire concert was just SO AMAZING AND SO IMMERSIVE. The VAs never failed to acknowledge and address the people at the live viewing, so the experience is almost just as good as if I had gone to the live in person. People who got to go to the live, you’re super lucky and I hope you had the time of your lives! And for anyone who didn’t and is feeling disappointed, don’t lose hope! There’s always next year, and the year after, and many more to come!!! And there are live and delayed viewings! And in the end, there’s always the DVD/BluRay, so no one has to miss out <3 It’s definitely an experience I would recommend to all i7 fans ;___;

Recreating Memory – Transformation of the Main Square (Glavni trg) in Novo Mesto into a poetic legacy for the common future

Architecture is a factor which goes beyond a mere spatial solution. Upon careful consideration, the communicative value of the space emerges in the form of the new opportunities it offers.  

The old city centre of Novo Mesto features a number of quality historical spatial interventions, such as the sculptures Hostage and Song to Freedom which – together with the memorial loggia to the National Liberation Front – create the On the Gates  (Na vratih) spatial solution designed in 1953 by the architect Marjan Mušič and the sculptor Jakob Savinšek. Also important is the memorial on the spot where two partisans, Franc Janc and Alojz Hacin, were hung in the most humiliating manner. The memorial is symbolically low – it illustrates the height of the gallows, which were so low that the two men’s legs had to be tied to their bodies to prevent them from touching the ground. Then follow the arcades of the atrium houses, the Town Hall, and the marble fountain designed by Mušič with an engraved poem by Dragotin Kette, which replaced the former cast-iron fountain. The view then follows the Kandijski Bridge to rest on the hill of Grm.

Before, these gestures and existing interventions by Mušič never stood a chance to form a quality space together, and the city centre was far from offering such a space to all its users. The spatial chaos and complete subordination of the city centre to road traffic entirely outweighed the fundamental function of the square: to provide an outstanding, open common space.

ATELIERarhitekti approached the task with the desire to re-establish the spatial hierarchy on the square – an ambition so far unattainable due to the differing levels and the surface of the road. However, once the square became a traffic-free zone, the spatial order, citizens and cultural activities regained priority. In the new spatial arrangement, they obtained their place, while the smaller ambiences promote new ideas of spatial use.
