Resident Evil Biohazard, Village, and the Cycle of Toxic Family Bonds and Abuse
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and its sequel, Resident Evil: Village, revolve around protagonist Ethan Winters as he tries to protect his family from forces he previously had no idea existed. The forces in question are an extended family suffering toxic bonds to each other- bonds both physically and emotionally poison. The core theme of the games is the cycle of toxic familial relationships, and the breaking of that cycle.
To fully understand the cycle of abuse that this story details, it’s important to look at each member of the family. The family tree starts with Mother Miranda, branching down into Alcina Dimitrescu, her three daughters Bela, Cassandra and Daniela, Karl Heisenberg, Salvatore Moreau, Donna Beneviento and Eveline. From Eveline, the family branches off into the Baker Family, with Jack, Marguerite, Lucas, and, by force, Mia. Zoe is still a Baker, but has been ousted from the rest of the family. The Bakers and the Lords are separate and never meet, connected only by Eveline, but it is Eveline who continued the cycle with the Bakers after learning it from Miranda.
Eveline was created as an attempt to bring back Miranda’s deceased daughter, but Miranda rejected her as her daughter because of her obsession with a family that made her violent- refusing to see that this obsession mirrored her own (such as when she was so obsessed with her own plan for her family that she gave up on reviving Eva at the end of Resident Evil Village and planned to just raise Rose as her own.) The flaws in other people were unacceptable, but in herself, they didn’t exist. Her obsessions, her hastiness, her tendency for unnecessary violence were left unacknowledged, but shunned and punished in other people, such as Moreau’s lack of affection in the family due to how deeply he wanted to be accepted, or Alcina being condescended to for warranted anger. Anyone flawed was not her true child, also shown by how she referred to The Four Lords as her false children and thanked Ethan for disposing of them once they were dead.
When her mother hastily disowned her, Eveline sought family in different places. She found it in her handler Mia Winters, and eventually in the Baker Family, overcompensating with a bigger family to make up for the one she didn’t get in the first place. No amount of family was enough for her- despite having Mia as a mother figure, she wanted Marguerite too. After she took the Bakers and had Jack as a father, she wanted Ethan too, and when Ethan arrived he found that she had been orchestrating multitudes of kidnappings via the Bakers to expand the family. Jack, Marguerite and Lucas had their worst traits amplified via an obsession with being Eveline’s family, and due to never having a model for what a loving family should look like, Evie didn’t understand why it never appeased her.
Despite wanting to constantly bring more people into the family to fill this hole, from the very beginning Evie ousted Zoe from the rest of the Bakers by not fully infecting her. She took just enough of a hold on her that she couldn’t leave, but left her consciousness fully untouched, leaving her helpless to watch her family descend into madness. Eveline purposefully set herself up as the family’s golden child and Zoe as the scapegoat. She taunted her and had her face scribbled out in pictures of her around the house, and influenced the other Bakers’ to shun and antagonize her. All of this to punish her for having a family of her own when Eveline didn’t. Zoe was rejected just as Miranda rejected Eveline.
The Bakers as a whole were forcibly cut off from society when infected by Eveline, their neighbors and other relatives having no idea where they went, and while Evie likely didn’t actually learn this act from Miranda, it was her mother who began the cycle of isolation as well. Miranda, however, was much more manipulative and sinister in her methods, whereas Eveline did the only thing she ever knew how to. Miranda forcibly took The Four Lords as her family, and while the timeline is unclear, it’s implied Heisenberg and Moreau were taken as children and Donna and Alcina as adults. All four lords were mutated and manipulated, cut off from any chance at a life outside of her care.
Moreau’s intense mutation led Miranda to be the only one he could possibly rely on, as the other lords thought him too repulsive. He has the emotional intelligence of a child, weeping often and wanting only for his mother to be proud of him due to how Miranda had isolated him from everyone with his mutation, reminiscent of a mother who refuses to let her child leave the nest and shelters them too heavily from the world to create an unhealthy reliance. Moreau has no self confidence and little social skills, and because of his monstrous appearance, he can’t go anywhere else.
Donna’s parents committed suicide when she was young, exacerbating her own mental health issues, and this left her already struggling to make connections with anyone. She did, however, have a confidant in her family gardener, who looked after her like a father might. When Miranda mutated her, she gave her the motherly love she lacked and gave her more confidence. With this gift, Donna became reliant on Miranda as her mother, unaware that she only ever intended on using her as part of her research. Donna’s loyalty was ensured in this way, and because she already felt isolated from the rest of the world, Miranda made certain she wouldn’t ever leave her.
Alcina was taken as a fully grown adult- she had a life outside the village, unlike the other Lords. We know this because of the jazz album Ethan has in his home. It’s seemingly inconsequential, but it implies a rich and full life before Miranda. Obviously wealthy due to her Dimitrescu lineage and her music career success, she was set up in style, and no doubt had an active life as a socialite. All of this was taken away when Mother Miranda lured her into the Dimitrescu Castle and mutated her. Obviously unable to rejoin normal society with her new need to drink blood and her intense height, Alcina HAD to rely on Miranda from there on out. Miranda was not her mother, and her parents had died only recently when she was a grown woman, but she had no choice but to stay with her. She clearly made the most out of her life, but often expressed anger over having to play family with the other lords, who were much younger than her. She reads as a put upon eldest daughter by a mother who expects too much- simultaneously expected to be a second parent and treated like a child.
Alcina also continued the cycle of abuse when she frequently lashed out at Heisenberg. It was likely due to resentment over a multitude of things, such as his lack of apparent mutations, being made to play family with him, and being made to go along with him on any plans despite being likely decades older and the only control in her life being her duties as a lord. This also leads back to the Golden Child and the Scapegoat- Heisenberg was a wildcard and a rowdy child who often lashed out, and Alcina was the perfect eldest daughter who did everything for the family even if she didn’t like it. Miranda purposefully created a rift between them with this dynamic, making Heisenberg infuriated by having to show deference to Lady Dimitrescu, and Lady Dimitrescu feeling belittled by having to play equal with Heisenberg.
It isn’t known exactly what Karl’s family situation was prior to Miranda, but we do know that he was kidnapped. Whether he was kidnapped as a child or an adult, he knows he was kidnapped, he knows Miranda’s entire family is fake, and he knows that he hates her. Interestingly, Heisenberg is in a unique position- he doesn’t need Miranda. His mutation is only internal, and just by looking at him you wouldn’t notice he was any different from any non mutated human being. He hates Miranda and doesn’t rely on her emotionally. The only thing stopping him from leaving is Miranda’s physical prowess, and we see him actively trying to circumvent this and escape.
Unfortunately, Heisenberg’s downfall is that he continues the cycle of abuse when he tries to use Rose as a weapon against Miranda instead of trying to protect her, doing the same thing to her that Miranda did to him. He was a weapon, one of her guardsmen, and so it was only logical to him that Rose should be the same, because it was all he knew.
Ethan is ultimately the one to break the cycle. Coming from the outside of this world, or from a different family dynamic, he clearly knows what a loving and functioning family is supposed to look like. He’s appalled by how the family he goes against works- he watches them hurt each other and tear themselves apart both physically and emotionally, and walk it off like it never even happened. Even Zoe’s behavior shocks him. Despite being the most normal of them, she’s fully desensitized to the horror of it all, and laughs when he’s frightened by her family. She doesn’t realize she’s trapped in the cycle too until she’s finally freed from it in End of Zoe, when Joe shows her the first bit of familial love she’s seen in three years. Mia is still trapped in this cycle and nearly pulls him into it with her mistakes (in the literal sense, yes, Mia being forced into playing mom for a bunch of moldy strangers doesn’t seem like her being trapped in a cycle of abuse, but consider it from the perspective of meeting your wife’s family only to wonder why she still talks to any of these people), but he manages to pull her out. The two are still shown to struggle with her secrecy and her avoidance (especially because she didn’t tell him he was dead, and he didn’t realize her hostility was Miranda’s acting), but it’s clear Mia is better off than when she was stuck with the Bakers.
This carries into their daughter- she’s only an infant, but they already want the world for her. Ethan risks everything just to rescue her from people he would likely never dream of facing otherwise. He suffers terrible pain at the hands of the “family” he married into just to save Rose from them, and ends the cycle completely when he rejects Heisenberg’s plan and kills Miranda himself. He sacrifices himself so that Rose doesn’t have to ever be caught in that cycle. It doesn’t matter to him that she has powers, or that he isn’t alive and she came back from the dead, or that his family is absolutely nothing like what he thought it would be. What matters is he loves her, he loves Mia, and he’d love them no matter what. It’s even his love for Rose that inspires her to deny the cycle another start and accept herself as she is in Shadow of Rose. Even if he didn’t raise her himself, he made sure she was with someone who would protect her, and he ended the cycle of abuse started by Mother Miranda before it could ever touch her.

Who'd like some good old fashioned name analysis?
Okay, so, I been doing so much research for Resident Evil stuff and learning shit about fairy tales and timelines and genome editing and searching for impossible Romanian poetry I got overwhelmed and went, fuck it. Why not just look at their names? Maybe I'll learn something there.
So, here I have done it. Name meanings for characters of the Mold Saga so far aka 7 and 8 aka Biohazard and Village.
(Sorry I'm on mobile I'll put a cut here when I can)
Ethan: Firm, enduring, strong, impetuous, long-lived. An incredibly consistently common and popular name. E name just like Eveline, so could be a successor of sorts to the mold.
Mia: Derivative of numerous other names of many possibilities. Mia as a word means “mine” in Italian and Spanish. Mamma Mia is a well known Italian phrase, particularly due to the ABBA song and musical of the same name, and it being the catchphrase of the Nintendo character Mario. The phrase means “my mom”.
Winters: First and last season of the year where everything becomes dormant and cold and either dies or sleeps.
Eveline: Contains “Eve”, as in both the biblical first woman. Also means a night before an event, and the game takes place in the span of one night. The name Eve means “ life”, “living one”, “mother of life”, or “giver of life”. Another possible name origin is as a variant of Aveline, which is a diminutive of Ava, which is the same pronunciation as the name Eva as pronounced in Village.
Baker: Occupational surname. In older times consider an upper-middle class job, much like the family. Also adds the emphasis of the “food” and also how they essentially make more molded.
Jack: God is gracious, supplanter. A nickname for John and other related names, but also a name in itself. It is also a word with a couple meanings, including a heavy lifting tool, to steal something, to take control of something, or an everyman.
Margueritte: Pearl. French name for ox-eyed daisy. Derived from Margaret. Sounds like maggot.
Lucas: Light. Derived from Lucius which means “the bright one” or “the one born at dawn”. Luke is also an Apostle of Jesus and was a physician.
Zoe: Life. Came from the name Eve. Fitting as Zoe was practically pushed out of the family after Eveline’s arrival, replaced as the daughter of the family.
Joe: He will add. Was added as DLC. Short for Joseph. Joseph is the name of multiple biblical figures. One is a child of Jacob and Rachel and Jacob’s favorite son in Genesis (note: Jack is a nickname for Jacob) who was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, but rose to become vizier, the most powerful position nest to the Pharoah, and forgave his family and brought them to Egypt. One is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who loved and raised a child he knew was not his against social norms. Another is a disciple known as Joseph of Arimathea who notably took Jesus down from the cross for his burial and testified when he revived and was gone.
Rosemary: Dew of the sea. Combination of Rose and Mary or the plant rosemary. Roses as a plant vary in meaning depending on color. Mary and its variations have many differing meanings, among them being, “beloved”, “love”, “bitter”, “rebellious”, “wished-for child”, and “drop of the sea”. There are also the allusions to Mary, mother of Jesus as she is sometimes worshipped with roses, and you say Hail Marys on your rosary which is only two letters from her name. In regards to the plant, it is relatively resistant to drought and cold, though some breeds are susceptible to frost and they don’t like too much water. They have fibrous roots, so they spread and fan out like we see with the mold. They thrive in more alkaline soils and seem to have been named by a taxonomist named Carl  Linnaeus. In stories, folklore, and tradition, the plants or flowers are often used for remembrance, specifically for the dead. It’s also been used as a spice and in medicine.
Miranda: Worthy of admiration. Latin in origin. Character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and whether she is a strong female character or not is highly debated, as she frequently defies men like her father, but often when they expect and/or want her to. She is otherwise compassionate and naive. The titular character of a Polish novel in which everyone is a mage and Miranda is a medium connected to another character, Damayanti, who is portrayed as the ideal woman and has a romance with the male protagonist, yet sacrifices her body so her spirit can experience a higher state of consciousness. Miranda can contact her soul, and disappears when she dies. Miranda in the US refers to the required practice by police of reading suspects their rights before interrogation.
Eva: Latin form of “Eve” and meaning “life”, “mother of life”, or “giver of life”.
Duke: A ruler of a duchy. A title bestowed by royalty or passed through family, often given to royalty or nobility, but can be given to anyone. In France,  the peerage system was abolished in 1789 (vive la révolution), brought back in 1814, and finally perma-abolished in 1848.
(Note: While the wife of a duke becomes a duchess, the husband of a duchess does not become a duke. At least, from what I gather. This shit is confusing.)
Alcina: Strong-willed. Greek origin. There are two operas using the same story about a sorceress named Alcina who lives on an island with her sister Morgana and seduces every knight who comes to the island, but turns them into plants, animals, or stones when she bores of them. When the source of her power is destroyed, she, her sister, and their palace crumble to dust. The Hungarian name for Alțâna, a commune in Sibiu County, Romania in the historical region of Transylvania.
Bela: Bela Lugosi was an actor who famously portrayed Dracula. His name is Hungarian and meant to be spelled Béla meaning “heart”, “insides”, or “intestines”, roughly translating to “having heart” or “having guts” in modern terminology, as in being brave. However it is considered a male name and as Bela is female there is also the possibility of the influence of the name Bella short an l, Bella an Italian name meaning “beautiful”.
Cassandra: The one who shines and excels over men. Name of a Trojan princess and priestess in Greek mythology. She was given her gift of prophecy by the god Apollo but, in most versions of the tale, he asks for sexual favors in return, and she initially agrees but then rejects him once she’s gotten her gift. In anger he cursed her to always tell true prophecies that no one would believe and was thus thought a madwoman. She served a temple of Athena, goddess of wisdom, handicraft, and warfare. When Cassandra was assaulted and possibly raped in Athena’s temple and dragged out while desperately clinging to Athena’s statue, Athena was so enraged by the damage done to her temple and/or her priestess that she enlisted the help of both Zeus and Poseiden to exact revenge on the Greeks for failing to punish the man who attacked Cassandra and caused the resulting damage. Zeus gave her one of his own bolts of lightning and she struck them down at sea. While Cassandra was never believed, she was always right.
Daniela: God is my judge. Feminine form of Daniel. Daniela is also a genus of moth with only one species in the genus, Daniela viridis. It is also another name for the Italian wine grape Prè blanc.
Dimitrescu: Child of Dimitri. -escu suffixes in Romanian are like -son suffixes in English, it derives from parentage (ex. Jackson is Jack’s son, Dimitrescu is Dimitri’s child). Dimitri means “devoted to Demeter”. Demeter is the Greek goddess of the harvest, agriculture, sacred law (i.e. cycle of life and death), fertility, and the earth. Like many Greek myths, she is repeatedly wronged, and rather severely, by multiple male figures. Demeter in particular is a mother who has her daughter Kore, later known as Persephone, stolen away from her and goes on a rampage searching for her and those responsible.
(Note: Considering the founders had these names it’s a bit dumb seeing as this trend of parentage -escu names supposedly came about mid 19th century (1800s for those who find that confusing cuz I do), long after the Village was founded)
Donna: Lady or lady of the home. Italian name and a title of respect. Derives from the Latin term Dominus. The Romanian form of the word (not the name) is Doamnã. The Atropa belladonna aka deadly nightshade have berries and foliage that contain tropane alkaloids including atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine which are extremely toxic and can cause hallucinations and delirium, but are also used in pharmaceutical anticholinergics. Throughout history people cluelessly used the berry juice as eye drops to cosmetically dilate their pupils, giving them a seductive doll-eyed appearance. Symptoms of belladonna poisoning are dilated pupils, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, tachycardia, loss of balance, staggering, headache, rash, flushing, severely dry mouth and throat, slurred speech, urinary retention, constipation, confusion, hallucinations, delirium, and convulsions. The plant's deadly symptoms are in atropine’s ability to disrupt the parasympathetic nervous system’s involuntary regulation like sweating, breathing, and heartbeat.
Angie: Diminutive of many names containing “angel”. Angels are messengers and warriors of Heaven, a realm souls go after death. Angel statues are also common grave markers. Children are also often told they have guardian angels, a being watching over them to protect them.
Claudia: No sure meaning has been found, but some think it comes from claudus, meaning “lame”, “limping”, or “crippled”, or clausus, which means “shut” or “closed”.
Beneviento: Good wind. Neapolitan spelling of Benevento, the name of both a province and its capital city, located in the Campania region of Italy.
Salvatore: Savior. Italian name. In the movie version (I specify as I have not read the book and the movie synopsis has more on the characters) of The Name of the Rose, the character Salvatore is hunch-backed and twisted, and has a history of not-really-acceptable religious beliefs. He was also tortured and falsely accused of witchcraft. He dies when a library is set on fire.
Moreau: Moorish, dark-skinned. French surname. Titular doctor in The Island of Doctor Moreau, in which said doctor performs disturbing and torturous experiments on people and animals, especially through vivisection, to make beastial humanoid creatures.
Karl: Free man, strong man, manly. Werner Karl Heisenberg was a German theoretical physicist who made notably important contributions to hydrodynamics, ferromagnetism, cosmic rays, and subatomic particles. Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist, and socialist revolutionary who believed societies develop through class conflict, and in a capitalist society this is the “ruling” class (the bosses) having power over the working class. He believed people should have equal footing and should and would inevitably fight for it. Karl Jaspers was a German existentialist philosopher and psychiatrist. His humanist ideals had him dissatisfied with the medical community’s approach to mental health and worked to improve it, and philosophizing on it after.
(IMPORTANT NOTE: Since I’ve seen accusations of the RE character and his influences being so, I feel I must state it here. Karl Heisenberg is NOT a Nazi. Both Heisenberg and Jaspers lived through World War II and neither were Nazis. Jaspers was blackwalled because of his Jewish wife. Heisenberg was forcibly drafted into the Army Weapons Bureau, but pre-war he had been repeatedly slandered as a “white Jew” and his career held back, and post-war became more political, worked against traditional primacy in the education system, and actively protested the government considering equipping the army with American nuclear weapons. Capcom reps have also stated that Karl Heisenberg has nothing to do with Nazis.)
Heisenberg: Calling mountain (could not find a specific definition, “heisen” means “to call” and “berg” means “mountain or hill”). Reference to Werner Karl Heisenberg, (explained above). Likely unrelated, but another well-known (in the US at least) name thief of Heisenberg comes from the popular TV show Breaking Bad as the alias/street name for the main character Walter White who takes the name and starts selling drugs when he is unable to afford medical care for his in-need child, but grows more twisted throughout the series. Also place name.
Berengario: Italian form of Berengar, which is derived from Germanic root words meaning “bear” and “spear”.
Cesare: Italian form of the Latin word Caesar, which is an imperial title like an emperor or empress. The word Caesar itself may come from caesaries meaning “hairy”.
Guglielmo: Italian form of the Germanic William, meaning “vehement protector” or “desired helmet”
Nichola: Anglicized form of the Greek Nikolaos meaning “victory of the people”. Also a variant of Nicholas (Considered a female variant but fuck gender roles and the description says he.). This character is also referred to as Father like a priest I looked into saints and while I found no notable Saint Nichola (meaning on Wikipedia) there are multiple Saint Nicholases, most notably Saint Nicholas of Myra, also known as the Wonderworker and the model of Santa Claus. Stories of him include gifting gold coins through a window of a home for three nights to prevent three girls from being forced into prostitution, calming a storm at sea, saving three soldiers from execution, and chopping down a possessed tree. More connected to where his treasure is found, there is also a tale of him resurrecting three children who had been murdered by a butcher who had had intended to sell their meat as “pork” during the famine.
*BONUS TIME*
By that I mean these are less important so I did slightly less research and/or didn’t  feel like typing all the research so there’s less info, but it’s still relevant, so here you go!
Chris: A rare name in its own right, often a shortened version of names like Christopher, meaning “Christ-bearer”, and Christian, as in the religion.
Redfield: Literally red field. Fitting for the trail of blood in his wake because have mercy on any of his enemies, but regrettably including many of his friends and allies (rip in peace Piers Nivans).
Elena: Shining light. Greek origin.
Leonardo: Strong as a lion. Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese version of Leonard.
Lupu: Wolf. Romanian surname. Fitting as the surname of the man we saw become a lycan before our eyes.
Luiza: Renowned warrior. Polish, Portuguese, and Romanian name.
Iulian: Romanian name from the Greek iulius meaning “youthful” or “juvenile”, or ioulos meaning “downy-bearded”.
Vasile: Romanian name from the Greek basileus meaning ”king”. Vasile Voiculescu wrote a poem called Schimnicul, The Recluse in English, about varcolacul.
(Note: For those who don’t recall or didn’t notice his name in Ethan’s diary, this is Luiza’s husband.)
Rolando: Famous throughout the land. Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese variant of Roland.
Elba: Spanish form of Alba, which can mean “dawn”, “white”, or “elf”, depending on origin.
Dion: Shorter form of Greek Dionysios meaning “of Zeus”.
Wilson: Lineage surname, “Will’s son”. Very common surname in English.
Charlie: A name in itself but often a nickname for names like Charles meaning “man” or “warrior”
Graham: Gravelly homestead. Habitational surname, apparently derived from Grantham in Lincolnshire, England.
John: God is gracious. The most common name ever with the most variations.
Perlman: Ashkenazi Jewish surname. Also literal, “perl” possibly meaning “pearl” thus being an occupational name, or Perl being a woman’s name making it mean “husband of Perl”.
Emily: Rival. Latin name.
Berkoff: Could be Jewish, Dutch, or German surname. Definition not quite certain, but likely related to birch trees.
Josef: German, Czech, and Scandinavian version of Joseph.
Simon: He has heard. From Hebrew Shim’on.
Roxana: Bright, dawn. Latin form of Greek Rhoxane and Persian Roshanak.
Anton: Priceless, praiseworthy, flower.
Sebastian: From the Latin name Sebastianus which meant “from Sebaste”. Sebaste is a town in Asia Minor and comes from the Greek word sebastos meaning “venerable”.
Eugen: Well-born.Romanian form of Eugene. From the Greek name Eugenios.
(Note: This is the man who lived in the house with the red chimney.)
Ernest: Serious. Germanic name.
(Note: This man is noted to be missing in a letter to Luiza and his diary is found with the Cannibal’s Plunder in Otto’s Mill.)

Realizing that Saya No Uta and Resident Evil Biohazard are really similar.
Like obviously there’s big key differences, but…
Biohazard does feature Eveline a created monster who takes the form of an innocent girl with a deep obsession of having a family of her own, she has the ability to infect people around her and turn them into monstrous lunatics like the Baker family or they turn into mold creatures, the world where she’s infected it becomes gruesome and gory in its appearance.
Saya features well, Saya who is a creature from another dimension that is summoned into this one who to anybody with a very specific disorder perceives her as an innocent young girl, she falls in love with the only human she finds who sees her as a girl and not the fleshy blob parasitic monster she really is, just like with Eveline she’s able to infect and change the world around her and the people within in.
Saya is obsessed with Fuminori, she wants him, she needs him in the same way Eveline needs her own “family” because these parasitic monsters need bodies, they need flesh, and they need more physically capable beings to bring them victims to feast upon. Both stories also feature the idea of the world being destroyed; Eveline can if the story didn’t stop her spread her disease and warp the world until it’s infected and diseased. The same can be said with Saya who in one ending will “die” and spread her pollen which will infect the world around her causing it to become the fleshy monstrous Hell similar to the realm she originated from.
I think a key difference is that Eveline is portrayed as evil despite the fact she is kind of just doing what she was created to do for the most part, she’s a biological weapon who began to believe herself to be human and in her humanity she longed for love and acceptance which turned into an unhinged rage at the fact she could never be a human girl, she’s a monster and can’t be anything more than that.
With Saya it’s a less black and white perspective on the monster. This game is mostly from Fuminori’s perspective so for the most part the monster is seen in a positive light. You are made to honestly feel bad for Saya as the story goes on and you realize she is what she is, she’s a parasitic creature who feeds to survive and she is trapped in a realm unfamiliar to her where she is alone, there are no others like her. Fuminori is human but he loves her, he doesn’t see her true form and with the sanity ending he knows what she most likely actually looks like, but he still is in love with her. Saya wants others like her, she doesn’t want to be alone.
I seriously love both games and I love Biohazard being the typical action horror that comes with Resident Evil and Eveline being a villain, but I do love the disturbing nuance of Saya No Uta where the narrative forces you into a position to humanize the monster considering that you mostly see her as a human girl and not the monster she really is.
I kind of prefer Saya because there is something scarier when you reach the first of two choices in the game where Saya tells you she can fix your brain and you can see the world as it really is or you can stay as you are and stay in this fleshy Hell with her forever and you think “sure I’ll stay, what is there for Fuminori in the real world?” Which isn’t usually how a horror story works, you typically roll your eyes and immediately run for the nearest escape, but with this story the horror is so personalized and comes in the form of a toxic obsessive love that has ruined every aspect of the protagonist life that as the player you know there is literally nothing for him to go back to, which the sanity ending proves.
I think there’s something far more terrifying to that than a game where you just kill the monster and are given the choice to either save your longtime girlfriend or the woman you just met who unlike your infected girlfriend has not tried to kill you….not that that choice matters since Village just retcons your choice completely but that’s besides the point.
Personalized horror stories are some of the best to me and the combination of romance and horror is beautiful to me.

Humans are Space Orcs, “Rumors.”
This one is going to be interesting and contains a list of some random and outlandish rumors. Feel free to comment the rumors you have heard about humans and where, in the galaxy, they came from :)
As it turns out, there are a lot of misconceptions in the galaxy about humans especially from those aliens who have not yet seen a human. I, as a scientist, was interested in learning about these different viewpoints and how they diverge from each other because t-- in my experience -- there are many outlandish and sometimes wildly opposing rumors related to their species.
So as a little experiment, I have gone around the galaxy and asked all of the different species to describe a human to me in as much detail as they possibly can thinking it would be an interesting experiment to compare the different sides.
As a disclaimer, this will not be a full list, because I couldn’t get access to some of the species, but hopefully the scientific community might find this interesting.
Bran: Hulking monsters, that’s what I heard, hulking monsters with an immunity to poison. They can walk through water like it’s nothing, and they are absolutely unstoppable. You can't outrun them, you can’t outclimb them. They have a ravening, raving biological urge to hunt and kill. I have a relative who has met a human, and he told me that if you ever run into a human your best bet is to back away slowly. If you run they have a predatory instinct to chase you, so you have to be careful.
Celzex: The humans are nothing special really. Sure they are rather tall, and they have the proper thoughts of mighty warriors, but when you get right down to it they are merely naked giants. They have very long legs, and strangely enough they are not intimidated by our demonstrations of superior might in battle. Furthermore humans are very touchy-feely. They are always trying to touch you when they get the chance, which seems rather odd since they don’t seem to do it to any other species.
Iotins: Humans are like nothing we've ever seen or known. They are almost like magic, did you know that humans can detect, sense, and identify particles in the air at only a millionth of a percentile. There is no way to hide form a human , and if they want to find you they can do it. Humans are always hungry, and if it weren't for GA laws they would probably eat everyone. As far as a description goes, humans are…… bony and lumpy with legs that are too long and fingers that are too long.
Tvek: They’re beautiful…. Beautiful gods. So graceful like when they move they flow like water, when they smile they light up a room, and when they laugh it's like the twinkling of stars overhead. They are so wise, and just and fair and they understand so much that we never could. Humans are so powerful, and they could easily dominate the galaxy if they chose to do so, but they do not because they are wise and gentle. If you ever get the chance to hear a human sing, you should do it because it is as if the creator of all things lent secret power to their voices. Humans have the power to fly you know and they can control the element of fire.
Vrul: Illogical infuriating, and down right annoying in most cases. Even if you were to learn the human language, you would never be able to understand them because often  they say things they do not mean or they say something and mean the opposite. Everything they do is in a strange code, like they will be talking about cats and dogs but really be referring to the weather. Not to mention they have a plethora of bodily signals that are impossible to read. They have too few limbs, to much hair, and an excessive amount of extra senses, like particle detection. Everything about humans is aggressive and violent and they should be treated as such.
Tesraki: Well I’ll tell ou about humans. I have heard so many stories that I might as well be an expert. First of all humans are freaky and hairless with massive holes in the side of their head and sharp bones sticking out of their faces that they use to crush their prey. Their skin is supposedly translucent so you can see their innards from the outside, like veins and stuff under the skin. I heard they are all rubbery and stretchy and their fingers have extra joints in them. They have full laws and you can see their bones protruding ready to break from their skin. Humans can hear almost as well as we do, but they can see hundreds of different wavelengths of color. People say that humans drink meat, but I am pretty sure they don’t drink blood. My uncle tells me that you should never sign a contract with a human because they will probably steal your soul. Oh, and never give a human your true name because they might come find you later.
Burg: Humans! Humans are rotting scum, absolute filth. They are a pathetic squishy maggoty creature that wins all of its engagements through cheating and guile. They have venomous saliva and are a walking biohazard. Everywhere they go they shed disease and dead molecules to permeate the air. I am told, if you live long enough with a human, you will be forced to clean your space of germs and dead human particles built up about your home. They have no honor, and their words are filled with lies. Their skin is soft and they hide their skeleton on the inside, and when they talk it is a grating screech all cut up and sharp. Humans are dul creatures, but they are useful in battle because of how durable they are.
Drev: Humans are strange creatures. They are a great warrior race, though they are small and weak in body. They have no armor to speak of and thus are very easy to kill. However, they grow stronger the more limbs of theirs you remove because they will replace them with machines. Humans are much more vicious than any other species we know because they kill to kill they do not kill for honor.
Rundi: humans are an absolute PR nightmare, that is what they are. Every time there is a human involved you can be sure they are going to do something reckless stupid or scary. Make sure that everything in your vicinity is non toxic to humans because they WILL put it in their mouths. Humans are like children, they are curious in a bad way and they have no issue lying to you if they see the need, especially in politics. If you have to oversee a human you will be constantly trying to justify their mistakes or getting them to behave. They are especially annoying in large groups were their social nature creates unusual hierarchies which are difficult to work with.
Prodigum An inconsequential might. A mere trifling interest. Humans are small, soft and weak, However they do have lovely singing voices. I have a colleague who owns humans. He keeps them in a cage and has them sing to him. Really humans are pretty easy to control as long as you feed them and give them shelter. Other than that they are no more useful than an exotic pet.
Gibb (one of the crazy ones): They are dark gods, dark gods concealed within a flesh prison just waiting to be released. They are a creature of immense power and strength being dampened by the hindrance of a physical form. Why do you think humans are so powerful, why do you think humans have an innate sense of danger because they are connected to the ether around them, and they long to return to the embrace of the universe as a being of pure power.
Gromm: To put it lightly, humans are kind of dumb. I mean they are very brave and they are very generous, don’t get us wrong but they are generally bumbling and like fun more than they are serious. I would suggest having a human as a friend but not a work colleague.
Common rumors about humans.
They drink blood
They eat flesh raw
They have control of fire.
They can divine the future.
They cannot pass through a circle made of ground sulfur.
They can hypnotize you with their singing.
They can hypnotize you if you look them in the eye.
They are really a parasite living inside a human meat suit.
If you make a deal with one, you are bound for life
You should never tell one your true name.
If you use their rue name they can hear you and will be able to find you.
They breathe acid.
They are venomous.
They are magic
They are indestructible.
They have wings.
They can smell fear.
You can fend of humans with talismans made of copper
Feel free to add to the list of myths about humans if I have missed some your help would be greatly appreciated.

The 100 7x09 ‘The Flock’
Three months ago. Now that they’ve agreed to begin their training, Anders takes Octavia, Diyoza, Hope and Echo up to the ground. Even though they are looking out from behind glass, he instructs them to wear masks because the particles outside are lethal to humans.
The crystal giants. The bodies of the original Bardoans were crystallised from the inside out by the toxic air outside after they lost the war against ‘Gen-9’.  That is who they believe the ‘last war’ will be against.
In a biohazard room, they keep a sample of the substance they’ve collected which they call ‘Gem-11’. A small amount could wipe out the entire planet. That’s for sure going to come back into play.
Levitt leads their training. He claims the air outside is survivable for an hour or two, which would have given him time to come up with another plan. He admits they allowed to be their trainer because of how well he knows Octavia from their M-Cap sessions. I’m with Diyoza, I’m still not sure he can be trusted.
This group are all trained warriors. Hope was trained by a Level 7 (Dev) and a Level 12 (Orlando) so she knows their fighting style well. Their skills are already strong. To get them on board they need to be shown their way of life.
Rather than women giving birth, human babies are grown from embryos in a lab. This way they can watch the entire process and correct any birth defects before they’re born. They find this more efficient to create the perfect Disciples.
Their children are raised by the collective so they don’t form bonds. They are conditioned to choose the many (the Disciples) over the few (their friends, family etc which they have none of). That explains why their mantra is, “For all mankind.”
They attend a class where children are being taught. They’ve been learning about the Shepherd’s journey and how he found enlightenment in Etherea on a tall mountain.
What the Disciples want from them is complete devotion to the cause. To rid themselves of all selfish bonds and be loyal to only them. That is their way of lie. No attachments makes better soldiers. If they fail the final stage of training and cannot break their personal bonds, they’ll be sent to Penance one by one to grow old and die alone.
Echo, knowing the weapons are not lethal, shoots her friends and hits the target first during a training session. Playing by the rules isn’t how to win a war. Anders is impressed with her. Either she’s playing them, wanting to earn heir trust so she can take them down from the inside. Or she’s found someone else to follow and be loyal to.
Levitt, someone who has been conditioned to not have any attachments, has let his feelings for Octavia cloud his judgement. I’m still not sure if I trust him. The Disciples are supposed to not have bonds, but here he is breaking that. Anders probably already suspects something so I think he’s in danger. Unless this is all part of his plan? I still think it’s odd he was never sent to Penance for helping Octavia escape.
The final test. A simulation where they have to prove they’ve let go of their selfish bonds. The person they love most is going to burn the oxygen farm and the test is whether to stop them or not. Echo, Octavia and Diyoza all pass by killing Hope. But Hope cannot kill her mother and allows her to burn the farm down and fails.
Echo, Octavia and Diyoza advance to Level 2. As Echo was the most promising trainee, Anders allows her to decide Hope’s fate. She gives her five years on Penance. As Octavia and Diyoza don’t flinch at all, I think this is part of a plan. Five years on Penance, the place she grew up, is nothing. At least she’ll be safe there.
Sanctum. Nikki and Nelson have taken over. They threaten to start killing hostages, starting with Kaylee Prime, unless Daniel, Russell and Raven show up.
Indra finds no trace of their people at Gabriel’s camp, meaning no Raven. Murphy still wants to take Russell with him to buy to them some time.
Sheidheda agrees to come, but he has some demands. He wants time outside every day and someone to play chess with. He knows of a tunnel under the palace. Alyssa, his loyal servant who has been passing him notes, will show them the way and Indra can lead Wonkru through.
Nikki forces Kaylee, Daniel and Russell Prime to reveal who they really are, which causes anger and confusion among the faithful.
Nikki puts a gun to Emori’s head and Murphy tries to scramble and admit he was the one who sent Hatch to die, not Raven. He’d do anything to save Emori.
Indra and Wonkru arrive to diffuse the situation. Indra orders everyone expect the faithful to be escorted out. She locks the door, leaving Sheidheda in there with the faithful. Her plan is for them to be so angry at him for killing Russell that they kill him themselves.
What she didn’t take into account is that Alyssa is still blindly loyal to him and unlocks his shackles. Now no longer constrained, he reveals his true intentions and announces who he really is. Rather than them killing him as Indra had hoped, he uses the candle stick to slaughter them all.
By the time Indra realises her mistake, they’re all dead. A bloodbath. To add even more to the chaos, Wonkru now know who he truly is and bow down to Sheidheda. Things in Sanctum are even more out of control now.
A good episode. I liked learning more about the Disciples way of life on Bardo, and the Sanctum plot now feels like it’s finally moving forward. I’ve been enjoying the season and find the story interesting, but I am really feeling Bellamy and Clarke’s absence. The show isn’t the same without them so I’m hoping the second half will be focussed on them.
