if i was dying on my knees (you’d be the one to rescue me)
(title from brother by kodaline)
so, hi! jatp has reignited my desire to write again and this time i think i might actually finish a whole fic. so uh, here it is :) please let me know if you like it, I’ll hopefully update asap, but i’m in uni so asap may be in like two weeks. unless people really like it. then, probably sooner lmao.
pairing: julie molina x luke patterson
fandom: julie and the phantoms
warnings: death bc rose, and i swear once but other than that i think nothing else?
Julie didn’t want to be frustrated, she really didn’t. In fact, she wanted to be sad, mourning, depressed, or literally anything other than slightly pissed off all the time. It’s incredibly exhausting to be angry all the time, and she felt like being sad would at least give her blood a break from simmering.
But her mom died. And apparently her body only knows how to process grief by developing a rather annoying tendency to be irritated constantly.
She tries to forget it though. Instead of wallowing in the negative feelings that cloud her family in the months following Rose Molina’s death, she throws herself into distractions. She gets a job at a coffee shop near the USC campus and puts almost all her effort into becoming a top employee. Her grades don’t drop because thankfully her professors seemed to all inherently understand that she just couldn’t sing anymore. Like at all.
The world kept spinning. Julie could only hope to hold on.
That’s how she ended up, six months later, complaining over a milk frother about her very well-intentioned best friend to the only person she knew would listen.
“Flynn just doesn’t understand,” Julie moans, shutting off the machine and dumping the contents unceremoniously into a to-go cup. Her coworker, Allison, raises an eyebrow and swipes a rag at the milk spill that pools under the cup.
“Did she try to get you to sing again?”
“Surprise karaoke night with her girlfriend and a couple kids from class. Her intentions were pure though so I don’t even know why I’m upset.” Julie shoves a lid onto the cup and slides it across the counter to a pre-occupied businessman who doesn’t notice the extra milk soaked into the bottom. Allison nods thoughtfully and starts dumping coffee beans into the espresso machine. Julie watches her with slight awe. Allison was one of those people that terrified Julie when she met her; everything about her felt polished and put together down to the blunt cut of her pale blonde hair and the curve of her smirk when she smiled. Soon enough, Julie discovered that she was as warm as any of her other friends, but it had taken a lot of closing shifts and smoothie runs to come to that conclusion.
Allison sets down the bag of coffee beans and gives Julie one of her solemn looks; it’s the sort of look where Julie thinks Allison could probably read her mind if she tried hard enough.
“Maybe they’re going about it wrong. You haven’t been around music properly in what? A year? What if you just need to sit and listen to music again to just get you used to the environment?” Julie thinks for a moment. Allison raises a fair point, and it’s the complete opposite tactic that everyone else has been trying, which has been to shove music in front of her to sing and give her expectant and hopeful looks. It’s a trial run. Something casual.
“Where would I go?” Allison smiles a bit and passes Julie a container of oat milk to put away.
“There’s a bar off Sunset that’s hosting an open mic tonight. Very relaxed and casual vibes. I could pick you up from your apartment and take you. We haven’t hung out since that movie night a while ago.” Julie hesitates. It’s not that she’s opposed to spending a night with Allison, but a small part of her feels like she’s cheating on her current circle of emotional support humans by agreeing to go. Not that her dad or Carlos or Tia would mind, but Flynn would possibly take offence and that alone stalled Julie for longer than she realized. Allison clocks the look on her face and amends the statement.
“Flynn is obviously welcome too.”
A mind reader, Julie swears.
“Hell yeah. Let’s do this.”
***
Julie’s feeling significantly less optimistic when Allison’s car has been driven away by the valet and herself, Flynn, and Allison are all standing in line outside the club. Julie can feel the bass of the songs playing more than she can hear them, but the proximity of music is enough to make her palms sweat. Other than the music the coffee shop plays and the strains of country she hears through Carlos’ wall, Julie hasn’t heard proper music since Tia Victoria sang “Amazing Grace” for her mother’s funeral. Flynn notices her nervous look.
“Chill, Jules. It’s all very chill. We’re just gonna listen to a couple bands.”
“Flynn’s right. And if at any point you want to bail, we can go get soft pretzels.”
“But we should try and stay for the whole thing!”
“However, we’re also going to respect you if you can’t do that,” Allison punctuates this sentence with a meaningful eyebrow raise and Flynn nods vigorously. Julie swallows and tries to mimic the courage she had a few hours ago. The bartender scrutinizes their IDs for a moment before allowing them to sweep into the bar and Julie’s jaw nearly drops at the volume of people contained inside. Nearly every seat is filled, and the standing areas are packed with people all jamming to the band onstage that’s currently playing what Julie has to admit is a pretty kick ass cover of “Somebody Told Me” by The Killers.
Allison somehow discovers a table near the edge of the bar, and disappears off to get them drinks. Flynn’s rocking out already, and Julie feels a few of the nerves in her stomach even out as the realization that she doesn’t have to sing sinks into her bones. Allison was right, unsurprisingly. If she focuses hard enough, she can even push out the memories of coming to these sorts of open nights with her mom. Flynn shoots her a large and grateful grin and Julie lets herself smile back. She’s taking a step. She’s doing it.
Allison returns as the band switches and a new band begins to play a hyped up cover of “Africa” by Toto. The three girls lapse into quiet appreciation of the music, with Flynn singing along to every song played, Allison bobbing her head to herself and occasionally letting out a few notes in her vocal range, and Julie just quietly appreciating the fact that she doesn’t feel like throwing up.
It’s all very casual, just like her friends said.
Until it’s not.
As the third band of the night begins their last song, Julie retreats to find the bathroom. It’s hidden nearly backstage, and she’s just about to make it to the door when she hears the panicked shouts of someone from near the curtain which separates the small backstage from the actual performing area.
“Dude, I cannot believe he bailed on us.”
“Are you really surprised? Bobby was a piece of shit.”
“Hey, he didn’t use to be!”
“Calm down, Reg. You know he’s been treating us like garbage ever since that record label thought he had a ‘marketable voice’ or whatever they said.”
“Guys he bailed on us, what are we supposed to do?”
Julie, despite all the “stranger danger” lessons running through her brain, backed up far enough to see into the backstage area. Three guys stood there, two with a guitar and a bass each and one with drumsticks he was nervously twirling. The one with the guitar had his face buried in his hands and kept swearing heavily under his breath. The other two seemed frozen in their own panic as well. Guitar Player removed his hands from his face and Julie caught a glimpse of worried hazel eyes and dark curls. Bass Player opened his arms and Guitar Player tumbled into them for a hug while Drum Player rubbed his back. The three guys looked absolutely wrecked.
Here’s the thing: Julie had an uncontrollable urge to help people. It’s how she got roped into half of Flynn’s schemes, how she ended up teaching Carlos all of his second grade science curriculum herself, and how she somehow became the unofficial backbone of her family after her mom died. Seeing three guys utterly wrecked because, presumably, their fourth bandmate had bailed on them? It activated that uncontrollable urge deep in her stomach.
Here’s another thing: Julie hasn’t played music or sang in six months. She’s had no desire to, and every time she’s tried, the distinct urge to throw up overtook her. Tonight was supposed to be the baby step that showed her whether or not music was something she could seriously consider again; whether or not she could feel that itch to perform anymore.
“Hey, do you guys need a fourth?”
She felt the itch.
The three guys looked up in varying levels of shock. Drum Player recovered first, and stepped towards her hesitantly, wringing his pink hoodie as he did.
“Um, what?”
“It sounded like someone bailed on you. I can play. If you need it.” Guitar Player recovers next and nearly bounds over to her in barely contained excitement.
“You can play rhythm guitar?”
“No,” the three boys deflate, “I can play piano though.” Guitar Player tilts his head to the side as though playing a melody through in his head. He turns back to the other two.
“Bright could fit piano.”
“We never wrote the music for a piano component,” Drum Player wrinkles his nose.
“I did,” Guitar Player admits. The other two don’t look phased, though Bass Player does raise an eyebrow. “I was bored!”
“Okay, but we don’t want to put you out,” Drum Player turns back to Julie and she swallows.
“No, I offered. Let me see the music.”
“Okay, but you have like ten minutes!” Bass Player finally chips in with a surprisingly cheerful tone. Guitar Player hands Julie what looks like a piece of notebook paper and her eyes skim the words and notes. It’s feasible for sure, but she can feel the nerves prickling at her stomach. Guitar Player leans into her space and she clocks how ridiculously attractive he is up close. He gives her a smile.
“We alternative verses like this, see? And I don’t know your range, but we can figure that out on the go.” Julie gives him a small smile.
“Somewhere between mezzo-soprano and soprano.”
“We can work with that.” Guitar Player seems to vibrate with energy. “Are you sure you wanna do this?”
“No pressure,” Bass Player adds.
“Like seriously, none. We can just go home and cry,” Drum Player says. Julie isn’t sure. She really isn’t. In fact, she’s pretty sure she should just run away and hope she never sees these guys again.
“I’m sure.”
Well, that’s that.
Guitar Player sends her a smile that looks genuinely like someone has funnelled sunlight into his body and Julie feels the nerves lift for half a second. Then, they’re called to the stage and all of a sudden she feels like she could puke all over again. Guitar Player grabs her hand and squeezes it.
“You got this.”
Julie files out with the rest of the band and she’s extremely grateful her friends aren’t sitting in her direct line of sight. The piano is definitely worn out from use, but her fingers settle naturally on the keys and Julie tries to focus on the budding itch to perform in her stomach rather than the urge to throw up. She’s supposed to start this song. This song that she became aware of ten minutes earlier. She catches Guitar Player’s eye and he nods encouragingly.
She presses down on the keys and opens her mouth.
Sometimes I think I'm falling down
I wanna cry, I'm calling out
For one more try to feel alive
And when I feel lost and alone
I know that I can make it home
Fight through the dark and find the spark

premonition; never too late preface
Summary: When Richie dies, Eddie has no idea what to do next, until he wakes up the next day, and Richie is sleeping next to him. In the strangest week of their lives, Eddie puts the missing pieces together to solve the mystery and his husband’s life.
A/N: this is a story idea based on the movie ‘premonition’, that both me and @reddie-fangirl24 are going to work on. We’ll alternate between writing chapters, and this is the preface. Let me know what you think! Also, I’m thinking about applying for a writing course in college so i would really appreciate any honest opinion about my writing!
warning: curse words
Despite Eddie’s best intentions on following the route of the car, he loses his sense of direction barely five minutes into the car ride. A blindfold is covering his eyes, making him blind and reliant on Richie, who is sitting next to him in the driver’s seat.
‘Are you excited Eds?’ Richie asks, childish glee laced through his voice. Eddie opens his mouth to answer, but right before he can, Richie makes a sudden U-turn, cursing harshly while he does.
‘Richie I swear to God. You’d better be paying attention to the road!’ He wishes he could see him, mostly because that would give him the opportunity to prod some more. He’s sure that if given the change, he’d make Richie spill the secret in 10 minutes flat.
As it stands, however, he can’t check if Richie remains focused on the road while they’re talking, so he resorts to silence. Africa by Toto is playing in the background, the same song that was their first dance as husband and husband, so he tunes in to the lyrics and lets his mind drift, the only way he can keep his energy in check.
He’s full of curiosity about where exactly they’re going, and what Richie had in store for him. Maybe they’ll be going on a day trip to the zoo, but that seems unlikely since it was already two in the afternoon, or they could be hanging out with their friends. But then why did Richie put so much energy in keeping it secret? The truth is, Eddie is clueless, and that is not something he likes.
He’s gotten better at letting things go that are beyond his control, but disruptive plans are a pet peeve he has yet to overcome, and Richie knows that, so there must be a good reason for doing it.
Richie is nervous, Eddie can tell, even if Richie tries his damn hardest to convince him otherwise. He’s been drumming his fingers against the steering wheel from the moment they left their apartment, too rapid to match the beat of the songs they’ve been listening too.
Just before he decided to remark on this before he can start questioning Richie, the car slows down, and the thumping stops. ‘Hey, Eddie Spaghetti, any guesses as to where we’re going?’
Eddie lets a disbelieving laugh escape him. ‘Obviously not, idiot. If I could see where we are, then maybe I had a chance to.’
Laughing himself, Richie turns the temperature in the car down, indicating to Eddie that he’s sweating, another clue that he’s more tense then he likes to admit.
‘You hot, babe?’ Eddie questions smugly, the edges of his lips lifted up to a smirk.
‘No’, Richie denies, ‘but you sure are, babe.’ He puts empathies on his last word mocking Eddie with his choice of words.
Eddie rolls his eyes as best he can behind his blindfold, even when he knows Richie probably won’t be able to notice it anyway.
For a moment, he nearly forgets what they’re doing. The atmosphere in the car brings forth the same emotions that summers as kids used to do. Before they had to worry about work and everything else, they could be as careless as they wanted to be.
Then the car comes to a quiet halt. Richie sighs, bracing himself for the next part, as he is both equally exhilarated, as he is anxious. Impatient as ever, Eddie eagerly asks; ‘Can I take off my blindfold now?’
Exhaling a chuckle, Richie shakes his head, before realizing that Eddie can’t see him. ‘In a minute’, he responds, taking the keys out of the ignition.
‘Remember our wedding day, when we returned at night to an apartment and the fucking annoying couple down the hall wouldn’t stop screaming?’
Of course Eddie remembers that, he remembers everything from that day in great detail. The way Richie positively beamed when Eddie came into the room, his arm linked with Bev’s, the hilarious speeches the losers made when proposing a toast, and the promise they made at night, when everyone was dead asleep.
The vow Richie and Eddie made, the one Richie is referencing, was a guarantee that they would move out and find their own place, away from others where they would be with each other and no one could interrupt.
They deserved that much after the lives they had, and especially after Eddie was nearly killed by IT, leaving him in the hospital for almost a year. That had been six years ago, but they still coward at any sight of a shadow, or a sound coming from a dimly lit place.
But that vow had been over a year and a half, and they had yet to find any house that was affordable and close to Eddie’s job, or the other losers. Eddie’s confused as to why Richie would bring it up now.
‘Sure, I remember that Rich, why?’ Eddie inquired, unsure where this was all heading.
‘Good, just making sure.’ Richie’s lips were chapped as they brushed up against Eddie’s, their lips meeting in a slow, loving kiss. Because Eddie hadn’t seen it coming and was taken by surprise, the kiss is a bit sloppy, but the fact that it’s Richie that’s kissing him, made up more than enough for that fact.
When Richie pulled back, his hand brushes over Eddie’s eyebrow, a soothing gesture he had picked up on at the hospital, since every other part of Eddie’s body was off-limits due to injuries. A dopy smiles rests on Eddie’s face when Richie eventually leans away, and he catches the sound of him opening up his car door.
‘Hold on one second, Eds.’
Then, the door on Eddie’s side unlocks as well, the cool air breeze from the open door making him shiver slightly.
‘Okay, I’m going to take your blindfold off now, okay?’
Eagerness spreads through Eddie’s entire body. He nods enthusiastically, he’d be embarrassed, if it wasn’t for the man-child that he called his husband.
When the one blockage slips away, another replaces it straight after, Richie’s one hand big enough to cover both of Eddie’s orbs. He groans. ‘Oh, you asshole, I fucking knew that that was what you were going to do.’
‘Yeah, well deal with it Eddie my love.’ Richie teases lovingly.
Richie supports Eddie out of the car, the grip on his forearm tight. With a slam, the car door shuts behind them, and they are left on the street.
Together, they shuffle over a sidewalk, and that is the only thing Eddie can make out, still in the dark. A kiss is pressed to the side of his head, and then Richie leans down, Eddie small and short frame nothing compared to his, so he can whisper; ‘Open up, Eds.’
His hands fall away, and it takes a hot minute for Eddie to adjust back to the light, after being without it for so long. After his eyes have adapted, he focusses on what’s in front of him, his eyes widening in uncertainty.
Before him is a house, by the looks off it made completely out of wood frame, plywood and sheetrock. There’s an enormous front yard, about 50 square feet, with a walkway from the street up till the front door, full of gravel.
There was a parking spot, marked by the absence of grass, in front of a large window that constricted the view inside the house by white curtains. Eddie blinked, then shakes his head as if to get him out of a daze before turning and gazing towards Richie.
‘A house? Is that why I spend thirty minutes in a car? To see a fucking house?’
Richie paled a little, clearing his throat before covering it up with a smile. Eddie felt guilty nauseatingly fast. ‘You should check it out first, Eds.’
‘What for, Richie? Getting arrested for trespassing is the last thing I want to do right now.’
With a chuckle, Richie guides the two of them towards the front door, his hands still holding on to Eddie’s upper-arms, steering him gently but firm. ‘We’re not going to get arrested, Eds Spagheds, trust me. Where’s your sense of adventure? Maybe I want us to get caught, huh?’
Richie playfully nibbles at the top of Eddie’s neck, right below his chin, laughing when Eddie pushes him away with one of his own. ‘If we get arrested numbnuds, I’m leaving you behind and I am not posting bail!’
The walk up to the front door, Richie letting go as he searches for the keys in his pocket. The door is painted in a camel color, with a mailbox opening near the bottom. Fumbling his way in front of Eddie, Richie opens the door with a tada-motions, gesturing Eddie inside widely, thrilled that he gets to show him the place.
Eddie enters hesitantly, glancing left and right, then stepping inside and doing the same thing. When you step through the door, you find yourself in the hallway, leading up the stairs to the end of it.
Turning left, Eddie sees what he believes is the dining room, and on his right is the living room, a large tv hung smack dab in the middle of it. There are no doors connecting them, just open spaces, but Eddie likes that a lot. It gives the illusion of freedom, and when discussing moving plans with Richie, he had always insisted it should be an open concept.
He peers at Richie, silently asking which direction they’ll go to next, but he patiently waits for Eddie to decide, his hands shoved in his pockets as he silently watches him.
Eddie sets off to the right, gaping out the beauty and serenity that the room displays. There’s a large sand-colored three-piece sofa in the corner, with pillows a baby pink littered across it. Besides the tv, there’s also a bookcase, a mirror hanging on the wall opposite of the couch, a closet, a wooden coffee table, and several green plants. The walls have a peach color to them.
Straight ahead was the kitchen, fully equipped with the newest equipment for cooking. Excluding the basic necessities, there is also a coffee machine, a food processor and an immersion blender. Though it’s a very modern cooking area, it’s build-out of wood. Eddie lets his fingertips slide over the top, focusing on the feel of the rubles under his touch.
Then they saunter over to the main hall again, arriving in another room which held a piano, a desk, and another tv, the walls tinted a dusky pink.
Next is the dining room, a large wooden table at its center, alongside six chairs, neatly places under neat it. There are two large windows, covering the entirety of the walls, leading up to the grass part of their front lawn.
A bathroom is located under the stairs, complete with a toilet, mirror, and sink.
The back garden is even bigger than the front, and if Eddie were to guess, he estimates the total ground at about 71 inches. A little pond covered under a large tree oozes tranquility, an image of an harmonious Sunday afternoon filled with reading and enjoying each other’s company flashes through Eddie’s thoughts, the imagine warming his insides.
Next, they ascend up the stairs, walking up to an even larger floor than the ground one. There are two more bathrooms, one next to one of the bedrooms, and one that’s found at the utter end of the hallway.
In the bathrooms a bath and a shower can be found, along with a toilet, sink and several cabinets, tiles coating the walls with a homely feel. There is a work office, with a desk, computer and placements for Eddie’s files so he can work organized and at peace.
Lastly, there are three bedrooms, with respectively lilac, peach and aqua-colored walls that Richie insisted they visited last. It becomes clear why when they enter the aqua colored bedroom.
The peach bedroom is unquestionably the main bedroom, as it is the largest, and has the biggest bed. It’s adjacent to the street, but the walls are thick enough that any sound from the outside gets muffled.
The Lilac and aqua rooms share a wall, both of them positioned near the backyard.
Eddie’s eyes are drawn to letter placed upon the bed in the Aqua room from the second he walks in, so he makes a beeline for it.
He hears Richie chuckle, but he pays it no mind as he rips the envelop open to reveal what’s inside. In the letter, with scribbled handwriting that can only come from Richie, a message is written. Want to make this the baby’s room? It reads, Eddie dropping the paper in shock, turning to asks Richie what the hell is going on.
‘What do you mean, Rich? Why the hell are we here?’
With a beam, Richie turns around in a circle, gesturing towards the whole house. ‘This is our house now, Eds. I followed everything you said, and added a few things of my own. I really hope you like it. I was basing it off of what your mother liked, you know since I knew her so well.’
Eddie looks at Richie like he grew two heads, his brow furrowed while his body stands rigid. ‘What the fuck are you talking about?’
For a whole year, they rejected every house that was on the market, touring more open houses that Richie toured cities, for none on them even remotely resembled what it was they were after, and now the perfect house suddenly fell in their lap?
The quest was partially daring since they both agreed that refraining from having children while still at the apartment was a must. Both of them longed for kids more than anything, but they scorned having to raise them in a place that didn’t belong to them.
‘Oh, yeah,’ Richie says sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck bashfully, ‘maybe I should have told you that this was haystack’s wedding gift.’
‘Wait, what the fuck, how?’ Eddie questions, the pitch of his voice going slightly higher.
‘Well I told Benverly about our search for a house and Ben offered to help. So we’ve been secretly working on this whenever you’re off to work or out with Bev.’
‘Oh Rich’, Eddie smiled, his heart growing twice as big as before. Every time he thinks he can’t love the man anymore then he already does, he organizes something like this.
‘And if you don’t like something we can change it. But we agreed on two kids, so two children bedroom, and look’, Richie exclaimed as he trudged to the window, pointing outside to the garden.
‘I was thinking we could place a swing set there, and maybe even a pool.’ He faltered when Eddie kept listening instead of speaking up, keen on knowing what Eddie thought.
Eddie, who was staring with a lovestruck gaze on his face, rushed forward to sloth his lips against Richie’s, kissing him passionately in a way to hopefully convey what words didn’t. Thank you, I love you, I love this.
‘Rich, Thank you. I-, this is amazing, you’re amazing.’
Richie melted to a pool at Eddie’s praise, swooned by the love that surrounded him.
‘And yes, of course, I would love to have a baby with you.’
He could not wait to start their new lives, in their own home.

An iPod in the hand is worth two in the toilet tank
Darcy Lewis Crack Challenge 2019 | Day 7: Strange iPod Locations |
Ship: Darcy Lewis/Matt Murdock | Prompt: Day 7: Strange iPod Locations | Rating: T | Word Count: 2386 | Other Tags: Crack, Meet-Cute, BAMF Darcy Lewis, Natasha Romanov is a good bro |
Summary:
It's odd to find an older generation iPod in the back of a toilet tank in a newly renovated building in Hell's Kitchen, but Matt's used to odd findings.
Matt let his head rest against the drywall, the scent of plaster and fresh paint was thick in the air. He silently hoped he hadn't stained any of the new walls in the recently renovated building. He'd tried to keep his fighting to the main floor, but that didn't mean something didn't get tracked up here with him.
As he was resting, his arms dangling over his bent knees, he heard something.
A soft sound that hadn't been there a moment before.
It was so quiet that he was sure an unenhanced individual couldn't possibly pick it out from the noises of the city just outside.
But since he was who he was, he could just make out the slightly retro tones of what sounded like Toto's 'Africa'.
He pushed up off the floor and walked towards the sound, using the sound waves to maneuver through the doorways and into what smelled and sounded like a brand new bathroom. The chorus had just started up, and even though his side ached in a way that made him fairly certain that last guy had bruised his rib cage, he smiled a little.
That song always seemed to result in similar reactions.
He found the source of the music in the back of a brand new toilet tank. An iPod laying alone under the cover, but it didn't matter because the water hadn't been turned back on in the building yet. Purple gummy earbuds were attached, through which the music pulsed, and from the feel of it, this model hadn't been for sale since 2007 or so. Not that anyone really used iPods anymore. Everything was contained in the phones.
Frowning, Matt ran his fingers over the device, 'Africa' still drifting from the earbuds as he found an engraving on the back.
It took a couple of passes, there were scratches there as well, it felt like this thing had been through hell and back, but he was able to make out a name and a phone number. Darcy Lewis. 555-333-9999.
It was odd that the thing had shown up in this toilet tank. Curious, even. He couldn't sense anything else amiss. No semblance of any struggle. No violence, other than what he'd wrought. The owner didn't feel close. In fact, there was no heartbeat discernible apart from his own. But the iPod was here. And it was playing. As far as he knew, there was no way to turn on these older models remotely. But he wasn't as up to date on that particular company's software patches either.
All Matt knew was that he would have heard it before if it had indeed been there when he arrived.
It was almost as if it had appeared out of nowhere.
He found the pause button and pocketed the device. He'd call the number tomorrow. There was a chance this Darcy Lewis was looking for it. Somehow.
Darcy Lewis sounded normal when she answered the phone. She even sounded surprised when he started to explain who he was.
"I'm Matt Murdock, I practice law down in Hell's Kitchen…"
"Congrats," she said, a hint of a smile there on her lips. He could barely hear it over the phone, but it was there. "Wait… I'm not being served, am I? Because that car was abandoned and I looked for an owner, but it was up on cinder blocks and I'll eat my own hoodie if you could even FIND the scratch I put on it."
He chuckled. "No, no. Nothing like that. I just… I found your iPod and called the number on the back…"
"Wait. What?" Darcy asked, sounding even more surprised than before. "You found what?"
"Your iPod…" he said slowly. "It's an older model, but your name and this number were engraved on the back."
She was silent for approximately five seconds, but when she continued, she asked something even stranger, if possible.
"Okay… this is going to sound weird, but where did you find it?"
"In the back of a toilet tank in a recently renovated office building in Hell's Kitchen."
She softly swore under her breath. "Can I trouble you for the address?"
"Well, it's not still there…" he said slowly.
"Yeah, I know. I just… I'm curious?"
He paused for a moment before rattling off the address. She thanked him, and he could hear the scratch of a pen on a pad of paper as she scribbled it down.
"Was it stolen? I'm not sure you'd be able to find the people responsible. It appears to be still working, but--"
"No, no. It wasn't stolen. I just. Didn't know where it went."
He frowned. It felt like she was only speaking at seventy-five percent. Like there was some other information that could clear things up, but she just wasn't giving it. "Did you want it back?"
"Oh! Yeah. Yeah, definitely."
"I could meet you for lunch…"
"At Benicio's in the Village," she filled in for him. "It's my treat, but if it's okay, I'm bringing a friend. I've never met you. For all I know, you could be some kind of masked supervillain."
He let out a chuckle again at the sheer irony of that statement. "That sounds fine. But I really don't mind covering my own meal."
"You found my iPod. Let me treat you."
He couldn't find a reason to argue with that. "... Okay. I'll meet you later today?"
"Around one. See you then!"
"Sounds perfect."
Perfectly confounding. If anything, speaking with the owner of the device left him with more questions than it had answered any.
Matt arrived at the restaurant early, just to scope out the place. He sat at the bar and sipped a ginger ale, his ears trained towards the door to hear when Darcy arrived. He recognized her voice, as well as that of another woman, who he assumed, was her companion.
"I still don't get why you care. That iPod is ten years old. Older than that, even…" That was the other woman speaking. She obviously wasn't in on whatever Darcy was cooking. That was interesting.
Darcy replied. "I told you… Jane and I are using it for experiments. Hell's Kitchen's the furthest it's gotten. Usually, it ends up in Manhattan, or more often than not, in the same building, just somewhere else. This is huge. Jane's going to want to get the chip out. Get some readings."
Matt frowned. Hell's Kitchen's the furthest it's gotten? What the hell did that mean? And there was a chip inside? He hadn't sensed anything amiss in the object. It felt just like any other music player. Nothing was amiss. But apparently, it had a chip? Did that mean it had a tracker?
The other woman scoffed a little. "Just send something else."
"We might have done some things to it…" Darcy replied. "Jane wants it back. Besides. SHIELD stole it from me. It feels good to get it back every time it leaves now."
Matt's interest was certainly heightened. He knew of SHIELD. And this woman did too. Plus, it sounded as if she and this Jane person were somehow transporting this device through space. It might deserve more than a second look.
He took one last sip of his ginger ale and waited for the duo to be seated before he made his way over from the bar, tapping his cane out in front of him as he approached the hostess' station.
"I'm meeting a Darcy Lewis," he said, flashing a smile at the hostess that he could tell she returned.
"Right this way, sir," the hostess held out her arm and he placed his hand on it, tucking his cane under his other arm as she led him to a table with two others sitting at it.
"Here it is, sir."
He could hear the surprise in Darcy's voice when she addressed him. "Mr. Murdock?"
Smiling widely, Matt dipped his head. "In the flesh. I'm happy we could meet."
He heard her scramble to stand and move out of the way so he could make his way to his chair.
"I can tell you weren't expecting me to be blind…" he said with a laugh, holding out his hand to Darcy.
She took it, enclosing it in her warm handshake. "No, no, it's fine, I mean. Of course, it's fine. I didn't mean… look, I'm glad to meet you too." She was charming. He found his smile widening without any coaxing from himself.
"Don't worry, I get that a lot. People who don't know me, they don't expect it. But it's completely okay. I have a routine worked out. I've been this way since childhood."
Darcy's companion hadn't spoken, but he could tell she was seated across the table, so he held out his hand. Just off center enough to prove his point that he was blind and couldn't see or sense where she actually was. "I don't believe we've been introduced?" he began.
He sensed a smirk as she took his outstretched hand. "I'm Natalie. Pleased to meet you, Mr. Murdock."
"Matt, please," he said, leaning his cane against the table and reaching into his pocket, pulling out the iPod and holding it out towards Darcy. "I believe this is yours."
"Oh dude, thank you so much!" She took it and slid it into her purse, which went in her lap instead of hung over the arm of her chair. That much he noticed before she started talking again. "Can I ask if it was playing when you found it?"
"Yes… umm 'Africa' by Toto, actually," he replied.
"Awesome, awesome. Good to know." She seemed relatively pleased by the fact that is was playing, but he couldn't discern the importance of it from her reaction alone.
The rest of the lunch was passed in pleasant conversation between himself and Darcy, while Natalie only said one or two words before the end of the meal.
He could tell Darcy's friend was studying him. And he didn't want to be a judgmental prick himself, but there was something off about Natalie as well. Something off about her like there was something off about him. Darcy had mentioned SHIELD in casual conversation before they'd been seated. Perhaps Natalie worked for the organization. In that case, she was likely reading him. Determining if he was a threat.
After the meal ended, he said his goodbyes and walked out of the restaurant, feeling like he probably shouldn't stick around. He couldn't be sure if Natalie had deemed him a threat or not.
He could sense another presence for the rest of the day. It wasn't the same one she'd exuded at the restaurant, but it was definitely Darcy's friend, Natalie.
Back at the office and even as he walked back to his apartment, he could feel eyes on him. He wasn't even granted reprieve once he was safely inside.
He paused the second he closed the door.
"I know you're here, I just don't know where."
"Bull," was the cheeky response from Natalie. Her voice was slightly deeper than it had been at Benicio's. Maybe not deeper, but definitely not as bright.
"You're in my kitchen," he replied, still walking over to the sofa.
"You need to tell her," was all she said.
"I feel like there should be a preface to that statement. Such as who you really are, and how you ended up in my apartment."
"Natasha Romanov," was her quick response. Too quick to be a lie. Of course, he'd heard of her. The Black Widow. He hadn't been expecting such a high-level operative to follow him home and start making cryptic demands of him, however.
"Why should the Black Widow deign to threaten me?"
She exhaled slowly, her gait heavy as she circled him. "You know damn well who you are, and so do I. Do you prefer Mr. Devil, or does 'the Devil of Hell's Kitchen' work better?"
He wasn't surprised a superspy like Romanov would figure out who he was, but he was surprised by the brevity of his anonymity. She'd barely been tracking him.
She was walking around behind him, he tilted his head to get a better read on her. "Are we fighting?"
"No. I don't want to aggravate that injury on your ribs." Her tone was lighter. Like she was teasing him or something. "You should probably get that checked out. It's more than a bruise."
"I've had worse."
"So have I. And I went and got it looked at. There's nothing heroic about letting something fester, Mr. Murdock. I got a guy who sees to mine. He's local. And he can keep a secret. He's got a few of his own. Want his number?"
He frowned, shaking his head and making a note to head to see a doctor in the morning. "How did you guess who I was?" he asked.
"SHIELD has a file on you. I pulled it when Darcy said she was meeting you for lunch. So, don't worry. You didn't give anything away. She didn't suspect anything."
"You didn't tell her?" he asked, surprised.
"No. Because I wasn't sure if she'd ever see you again to make it relevant that she knows more about you. I will tell her if you see her again and don't, however."
"And now?"
"Still not sure. But I know if that smile on your lips is in any part real and on her account, you should tell her. She's not dumb. She'll figure it out quicker than you'd realize, the more time she spends with you."
He didn't even realize he was smiling. It just happened. "I didn't think she was dumb."
"So you're thinking of seeing her again?" she said quickly.
He exhaled. "Yes."
"So tell her. She'll understand. She works with a bunch of us."
"So she and her boss actually sent that iPod through space?"
"Through a wormhole," Natasha replied, her tone changing slightly. "I knew you were listening at the bar."
"Because you recognized me from my file?" he asked.
He sensed the air shift around her head as she shook it. "No. there wasn't a picture. But I always check everyone in the room, and you seemed like you were scoping too."
"So, is that why you broke in here? To tell me not to lie to your friend?"
Natasha was silent for a long moment. "I don't care how you micromanage Hell's Kitchen, I've got bigger fish to fry than you. I just don't want her hurt. She's special. Okay?"
Matt nodded. "Noted."
There wasn't really any thinking to do on the subject. He waited ten minutes after Natasha had left his apartment and pulled out his phone. He had her number saved.
"Call Darcy Lewis."
She answered on the third ring.
"Hey… Matt? Is something--"
"Hey, Darcy. Do you want to go get dinner with me sometime?"
She smiled for a split second before she replied. "Absolutely."
He'd messed everything up with his last few relationships. All because he was keeping things from them. He wouldn't make that same mistake again.

March 25: Dreams
Oscar Dorothy’s typical day at the bed and breakfast.
“Dorothy! Dorothy! Wake up!” an oh-so-familiar voice called. Oscar, startled woke up.
“Wait... Dorothy?” His name wasn’t Dorothy. He looked at his bed, at his surroundings. He... he wasn’t in Argus, either! He was in the loft of his barn... he was home. Home? How did he get home?
“Oz, what’s going on?” Oscar murmured. The headmaster didn’t reply, and it occurred to Oscar that if he was back home then maybe he wasn’t possessed.
“Is this a flashback? Before Ozpin?” he muttered to himself.
Perhaps so. Either he had been knocked out for some reason or he had fallen asleep.
“Dorothy!! The guests will be up any minute! Come help me serve breakfast!” He realized immediately that his aunt was calling for him... or Dorothy.
“Who the heck is Dorothy? What guests?” Oscar grumbled to himself, shoving himself out of bed. When he walked over to the mirror, he realized he was in pajamas he had never owned in his life. They were white and blue checkered. He had on bright red slippers, quite fuzzy.
“Dorothy Oscar Pine, if I have to march upstairs and get you, I will pull you by the ear!”
“Dorothy Oscar Pine?”
Oscar hoped and prayed as he zipped down the loft that his mother had not named him Dorothy and everyone not was just calling him by his middle name.
He met his aunt downstairs, and she looked... younger... and more cheerful. Her brown hair was wrapped in a bun and her face held more vigor and color. Oscar wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do with himself.
“Dorothy, why are you still in your pajamas?” His aunt huffed, exasperated.
“Uh...”
“Hurry up and meet me in the kitchen.”
Oscar nodded and headed back the stairs, where he dug into his drawer, in search of clothing. Strangely enough, there was only checkered shirts and jeans. He wasn’t sure what was happening with the white and blue pattern but when did he own a pair of jeans?
“This dream is incredibly strange.” Nevertheless, he changed into his clothing. If it was a dream, he was bound to wake up any moment, right? It was best for him to stay under control and go with the flow.
After changing into his clothing, he headed out of the barn and towards the familiar farm house that he called home. Except, it wasn’t so familiar. His old, yellowing home was now twice as big and painted in a bright yellow pattern. The roof looked good as new and the home looked like it house a hundred people!
“Woweeee, we must be rich,” Oscar whistled impressively. He cracked his knuckles before entering the huge house. It was quite silent, but very prettily furnished. Paintings hung on the walls and plants and knick-knacks were laid out in every corner. Oscar almost lost his way to the kitchen, but he managed to find it. He simply followed the smell of frying eggs.
When he entered the kitchen, he was greeted by his aunt, and a strange man.
He knew this man very well. But his quite difficult to believe he was standing in front of him. Why would someone dead be standing in front of him?
“I—Uncle Henry? Oscar gasped, his mind spinning. In front of him was his uncle, the man who had died of pneumonia when he was about 8 years old. Here he was, looking rejuvenated and lively. His beard was trimmed and his warm eyes still looked the same as it did years ago.
“Yes... good morning to you, Dorothy,” Uncle Henry snickered. He reached over to the boy in shock and patted him on the back.
Oscar shook out of his daze. Okay. He could pretend it wasn’t weird to see his dead uncle. “Could you guys call me Oscar? I prefer it... to Dorothy.”
“Really? You had no problem with it until now. When we told you your folks named you Dorothy becuase they wanted you to be a girl, you didn’t mind at all,” his aunt shrugged. Oscar was trying to wrap his head around why his parents would ever name him Dorothy, even if he was supposed to be a girl. It didn’t matter, he reassured himself. It’s just a name. And this was just a dream.
His thoughts scattered, Oscar went to his aunt and helped her make pancakes on the griddle. His aunt and uncle chatted lively, and even Oscar got in on the conversations. It turned out, he missed this. He missed his family, and he missed his farm.
“According to the weather report, there’s a twister coming in any day from now,” his uncle sighed. “We have to tell the guests.”
“Oh, have some faith, Henry. I told you there is no twister coming so you have to believe me. My gut never lies!”
“Well, this handy device that came out—a scroll—told me there is a twister coming! You never listen to me, lady! Dor—Oscar, tell your aunt she’s crazy.”
Odcar giggled at the bickering, and continued flipping pancakes. He let the sweet smell of butter and berries engulf him as he continued his duty.
“Ung...good morning Miss Em. Good morning Mr. Henry. You too, Dorothy,” a sleepy voice came from the hall.
Oscar knew this voice. Without a doubt.
“Good morning, Red. And actually, he prefers to go by Oscar now,” he heard his uncle chuckle.
Red? Oscar slowly turned his head to see Ruby, decked out in her usual red cape and very un-Ruby-like dress.
“Uh, hey... Red. Hi.”
Oscar could feel his face turning red as he turned his attention away from this Red, and back to the pancakes.
“Oh, well good morning, Oscar. What you’re making smells good.”
Oscar nodded with a “Mhm” becuase he was too afraid of spewing nonsense. The girl he was hopelessly in love with was also in his dream?
“Is your sister awake, Red?”
Red shrugged. “I’m not sure. Goldie likes to sleep a lot. She and Belle aren’t exactly early birds.”
Goldie? Belle?
There was a strange feeling growing in Oscar’s chest as he poured a spoonful of batter onto the griddle.
“I’m gonna go get them up. I’ll talk to you later, okay, Oscar?” Red called from her spot.
Oscar threw a thumbs up before returning to his pancakes. He could feel the sweat on his palms as he faced his aunt and uncle.
“You are such a strange boy. After all these months, you’re still shy.”
“Uh, what?” Oscar asked, his blush deepening. His aunt smiled knowingly.
“After this batch, go set the table. We’ll eat breakfast and then you get the rest of the day off. How does that sound?” she asked. Oscar didn’t know what else to do, so he nodded.
After finishing the pancakes, he went to set the dining table. It was long and could seat up to about 20 people. Oscar thought about how Red was similar to Ruby, and how everyone he cared about was in a strange dream together.
“When will I wake up...”
“Morning,” a voice murmured behind him. Oscar jumped, turning around to see Ren in front of him. He still wore his long green hair but his clothing looked much more traditional, as if he was some emperor. It occurred to Oscar that Ren might not be “Ren” in his dream.
“Uh... good morning. Breakfast his almost ready. You... you can sit here!” Oscar smiled, pulling out a chair. Maybe-Ren sat down in the chair with a nod. Oscar heard loud footsteps from the stairs and looked up to see what he thought to be Nora and Jaune, followed by Red and who appeared to be Weiss, Yang and Blake.
“Hey, Red told me you want to be called Oscar,” Yang said. She looked so unlike herself, her muscular build was strange with the dress she wore. Her hair was in wild curls and in short, she looked a bit of out of place. But so did everyone else. Jaune was in full armor as well as Nora, except Nora was wearing fur. Oscar glanced at Blake who wore a simple blue and white dress and Weiss, whose hair was cut short. He had never been more confused in his life.
“You’re Goldie,” he murmured to himself, eyeing Yang. He could tell becuase of her hair. So perhaps Belle was Blake.
Oscar, thinking of his theory, went back inside the kitchen and brought out the food. He guessed the only guests were the 7 outside. His aunt and uncle sat down and Oscar did too, next to Red.
“Good morning everyone, I hope you slept well,” Aunt Em smiled. Everyone murmured good mornings to one another before serving herself. Red beamed at Oscar before spooning fresh fruit into her plates.
“Hey, you wanna go walk Toto with me after breakfast? It’ll give us a chance to be alone,” she whispered into his ear. Oscar, a bit alarmed, gave himself a moment before nodding.
“You two planning to go on a date?” Nora teased.
“No!” Oscar yelled. Everyone, including Red, turned to face him. She looked a bit hurt.
“Uh, I mean...”
“We are. I mean usually couples go on dates with each other,” Red snorted, shoving a sliced strawberry into her mouth. Oscar watched her, trying to process the words that just left her mouth. A couple?
Way to go, Oscar. You have a dream about Ruby where she’s your girlfriend. Not only is that impossible, it’s incredibly stupid.
Everyone focused on their plates and began to eat. Oscar avoided eye contact with Red the entire time and bolted from the dining room as soon as he was done clearing the table.
He sat on the porch with sweaty palms, waiting for Ruby to appear. He was hoping that he would wake up before that happened, even trying to pinch himself, but no such luck.
“Hey, you ready to go?” Red’s voice appeared behind him. Oscar heard panting and a jingle which meant the dog was with her too. He stood up and gave a nervous smile. Looking down at her dog, he saw that he looked exactly like Red’s dog, Zwei. She had shown him a picture of the beloved pet once.
“Uh, yeah, yeah.” Oscar offered to take Toto’s leash, but Red claimed she was fine. They started to walk. Side by side, Oscar felt strange next to the older girl. Somehow, in his dream, he and Red/Ruby were the same height, instead of him being a good four inches shorter than her.
Stop this fantasy now, Oscar. It’s time to wake up.
He tried pinching himself again, only for a red mark to be left behind on his skin. He tried to focus on the rising sun ahead of them, rather than the vast silence that had overtaken them both. He focused on the small purple flowers that grew near the creek or the roots that grew out of the yellow bricks in the road. Smells, he tried to focus on that too. The smell of home... the smell of something that made sense to him. Not magic and wizards and evil sorceresses. Just the farm.
“Oscar?” Red piped up all of a sudden.
“Hm?” Oscar replied, feeling a bit sheepish.
“You don’t want to break up with me, do you?” Red asked. Oscar turned to look at her, only to see her face was serious.
“No... no, I don’t. I’m just a little out of it today,” he promised. Even if it was a dream, he wasn’t in the mood to make Ruby cry. Red’s face reddened a little, as if she was embarrassed.
“I dunno. I mean... maybe it was a mistake. Asking you out. I’m not sure... if you felt forced into being with me,” she drawled out.
Whoa. She had asked him out? That changed a lot of things.
“No, no, Red... I really do like you. I was just a bit tired this morning and I promise I’ve never felt forced into this relationship.” Before continuing, he sucked in some air and grabbed Red’s free hand.
“I do like you. I swear. You’re beautiful and amazing and smart and all the things that make me feel happy,” he said. His feelings were honest, at least. He felt these feelings for Ruby in real life and he loved her. Even if those feelings weren’t reciprocated. But that was okay. He would be patient, and even if it never happened, he would still be okay.
“Really?” Ruby stopped walking and gazed at him, her eyes sparkling. Oscar figured his dreams were a tad bit too indulgent, but what the heck. If it was a dream, then it wasn’t real right?
Toto panted and ran around in mini circles. Oscar took what was probably his 6th deep breath of the day and he leaned into Ruby, pressing his lips onto hers.
Several thoughts ran through his head.
First, he had never kissed anyone in his life, so he was quite inexperienced.
Second, he was kissing Ruby.
Third, he was kissing Ruby.
And fourth, his heart was probably beating at 700 miles a second and suddenly, he was getting very, very warm.
Some time in the middle of this fantastical kiss, Oscar felt himself floating further and further away from Ruby. It was like everything around him was fading to grey. He was still there, and he could see a flickering image of him kissing Ruby, but it was like he was out of his own body, watching himself.
“...He’s full-on making-out with it.”
“This must be some dream.”
“Ewwww.”
Oscar felt a sudden sense of dread when he woke up in his own bed, team RWBY, JNPR, Qrow and Maria watching him. And he was smooching his pillow.
“I can explain,” he looked around, embarasssed. He couldn’t even meet Ruby’s eyes, but he already knew she was laughing her head off. Why did he let himself get caught kissing his pillow? Who kissed their pillow?
“Don’t worry, Oscar, this happens to everyone,” Ruby snickered. Qrow burst into laughter, waving his scroll. “I got it on video. I dunno who you’ve been hanging around, but the only person who’s done this I’ve known is your old man, kid.” Qrow replied to Ruby.
Ruby shrieked even louder and Oscar was even redder. Ozpin chewed him out mentally for letting himself be caught in that situation. Needless to say, he always had an... active imagination. But he didn’t need to worry. The good news was that the only person who knew what happened in the dream was himself!

Toilet For Compact Rooms
There are many different models and styles of toilets. There are two-piece and one-piece models among them. Even the composting variant is available for an environmentally friendly touch. However, the design of the flush, which is typically a reverse trap flush cistern, tends to classify toilet models. The siphon jet is a more expensive design that also has the benefit of being more effective. The half-flush system is another option, albeit it appears to be more common in some nations than others. The narrative doesn't finish with the cistern, of course. You can select a toilet with a wall-hung design or a low-level cistern, one of the traditional high-level cistern toilets, a low-level cistern toilet with its back attached to the wall, a closed coupled cistern toilet, the composting toilet, which is becoming more and more popular, or you can visit Japan to see the stunning Toto toilet, which is currently only available there.
The Regular Toilet
Too much wall space is frequently taken up by the typical toilet. Not simply the toilet bowl and cistern, but also the cistern's water inlets and potential overflow are on the side. Each model has advantages and cons among the numerous models. The wall mounted toilet, which can be adjusted to different heights and lacks appendages, can generate an amazing sense of space in a room that is smaller than typical. It is perhaps one of the best options for a toilet for small spaces.
Cistern in the corner
Nothing prevents you from installing a corner toilet in a small area. These toilets are not as odd as they would seem, and the toilet bowl does not fit into the corner; rather, the cistern does. One of the firms that makes a corner toilet for tiny spaces is Ideal Standard; the model is from the Space line and, while only being available in white, complies with Ideal Standard E7172, E7091, and E7204. Only the whole set, which includes the toilet seat, corner cistern, and bowl, is offered for sale. This type is the perfect choice for a toilet for tiny areas because the actual height of the toilet bowl is 395mm and the cistern is recessed into a free corner.
Excellent Designs
Toto's 'all-singing, all-dancing' routines of checking your blood pressure and analyzing your urine and then relaying the resultant information to your doctor are probably a little too imaginative, in my opinion, aside from taking up a little too much space each side of the toilet bowl. Porcelain toilet makers do, however, produce smaller toilets, some of which are much too little to be very useful. If you want a toilet for a tiny area, search for one with plumbing that enters the cistern from below rather than the side and one that is no broader than 16 inches. But if you do want a toilet for a tiny area, you could prefer a round front bowl than an elongated one. Due to the circular toilet bowls' 2 inch reduction in length, this option is especially helpful for tiny rooms and is ideal for those with limited space.

Best Toto Toilet
If you want a great toilet, but you are on a bit of a budget, then the Drake might be a good way to go. It is budget-friendly, which is due to its lack of special features. Even though it doesn’t have a ton of extra features to offer, it is a superbly designed toilet, which will be dependable for years to come.
Toilet Height: Standard or Universal DesignA standard height toilet measures 15-inches from the floor to the top of the toilet seat. It is perfect for households with children or shorter people. On the other hand, a universal height toilet (also called comfortable height or ADA compliant) measures between 17- or 18-inches from the floor to the toilet seat’s top. It is ideal for taller individuals and older adults.
High-efficiency toilets, otherwise called HETs, are the best sellers today. HETs are rising fast because they do not use much water but still perform very well. These toilets are EPA-WaterSense-certified. So, you should be on the lookout for toilets that do not go beyond a 1.6GPF water rating.

ROAD TRIP - Part 1
Macquarie ascended the spotted oak staircase in his fully owned northern suburbs home, smearing trust fund kid privilege all over the rail along which he dragged his left hand. His right hand was grasping a wad of paper which was barely being held together by two overstretched staples in the corner.
“This Chinese woman has been caught with 10,000 undeclared US dollars,” a voice intoned from somewhere upstairs. Macquarie raised his head, but it wasn’t anything interesting. His partner Sydney was watching Border Security in their bedroom.
…Or not. Macquarie shrieked as he crashed into Sydney and almost fell back down the stairs. They had been lurking on the landing.
“Macquarie,” said Sydney. “Let’s go on a road trip.”
“No,” Macquarie whined. “Just because you don’t have anything to do doesn’t mean everybody has to give up on themselves. I have a debt contract to write for Westpac’s bond issue.”
Sydney folded their arms. “You’ll have to write me a debt contract if you spend any less time with me.” They waited until their stern glance finally made Macquarie’s lip tremble. The edge of their mouth twitched.
“Does that count as insider info? What you just told me?”
“What, the bond issue?” Macquarie laughed obnoxiously. “Trying to make money from bonds is like trying to currency-hedge a position in foreign equity.”
Sydney stared at him blankly, which was just the outcome he had been aiming for. Feeling masculine after the display of obscure knowledge, Macquarie sauntered into his own bedroom and set the contract down on his expensive warped oak desk.
Sydney sighed and returned to Border Security. They were supposed to be practising on a simulation as part of their air traffic controller training, but Border Security was always too mesmerising, like the weak and unexciting, but still addictive, soft drug of sub-prime-time TV. They already knew the Chinese woman would be fined for her undeclared currency, and the carpet from Afghanistan would contain heroin, and the old Vietnamese couple’s fried chicken wings would be seized and destroyed. Still they remained on the bed, eyes fixed to the screen.
“Yo.” Oops, three episodes had passed. Macquarie was at the door.
“Yeah, what’s up?” Sydney replied.
“Can you Ubereats some Chinese?”
“Fucks sake,” said Sydney. “You do it. You’re not the one living in someone else’s house because you couldn’t afford your mortgage.”
“I can’t decide what to get.”
“Get two serves of the plum sauce beef, seasonal veg, and fried rice.”
“Oh, yeah, I knew that. I love the plum sauce beef.” Macquarie whipped out his phone and went to leave. He shrieked and almost threw it into the air when All Star by Smash Mouth started blasting from its speakers.
“-BODY once told me, the world was going to roll me,” Sydney joined in. “Since when was that your ringtone?”
“It’s only for John,” Macquarie grumbled. “It gets everyone around me to shut up so I can leave whatever conversation I’m having.”
Macquarie answered the call and rearranged his face into a smiling professional’s customer service visage. Sydney rolled their eyes. John was Macquarie’s division director, and whatever words he uttered always took precedence in Macquarie’s ass-licking life. Sydney had no doubt he would have John’s job one day, but until then he had to avoid being demoted.
“What?” Macquarie yelled. Oh dear, it was bad news. Maybe the contracts had to be re-negotiated.
“What do you mean Westpac’s pulling out?!” Sydney raised an eyebrow: even worse.
“How else are they going to roll over their fucking debt? They’ve already left it stupidly late,” Macquarie snapped down the line.
“They’re not.” John’s voice was way too calm.
Macquarie began to laugh hysterically. “You mean a bank is actually going to pay its debt back? Woo hoo hoo. That’s a good one, John.”
“Something’s going on. They’re trying to deleverage.”
“You’re shitting me, right?”
“No, Macquarie, I am not ‘shitting’ you,” the old man replied. “I’m meeting with the board next week. You take the next few days off.”
“Hey,” said Macquarie. “I’ve got truckloads of friends at Westpac. Let me do a bit of digging.”
“I said, take the next few days off.”
“I’ll have the contract ready and signed before you even get in the doors of that boardroom.”
“If I see you at the office before next Monday, I’ll fax your real conveyance documents directly to the head of the ATO.”
Macquarie sighed and glanced at Sydney, the one he had moved house for, in order to be closer to the airport. He gave a sour farewell and hung up on John, at which point he realised he had hit the speakerphone button with his treacherous cheek.
Sydney cocked their head. “Road trip?”
---
“Now that was insider information, wasn’t it,” Sydney said, hunched over the steering wheel of their shitty car, flooring the accelerator. The ancient Holden Barina continued to wince up the ramp to the Hume Highway at 40kph.
“What?” Macquarie asked, his feet up on the dashboard, expensive sunglasses glinting in the sunlight, as some jackass in a 4WD overtook them in the left lane, horn blaring.
Sydney slammed the car into second gear and wound down the window. “Fuck you too,” they yelled. “That deleveraging thing about Westpac,” they then said to Macquarie without missing a beat.
“Yeah,” Macquarie said, combing his thick auburn hair and examining it in the sunshade mirror. The car had reached the highway and was now picking up speed on the flat. Their luggage slammed against the back of the boot as the Barina accelerated as hard as its tiny engine was capable of.
“Still think we should’ve put the stuff in the back seat,” Macquarie said.
“Yeah, and move it all again when we pick Aristocrat up in Melbourne. Are you going to short some Westpac shares?”
“Wow,” Macquarie said. “How do you know what shorting is?”
“I read your diary.”
A flash of fear creased Macquarie’s perfectly groomed face. Sydney snickered. “What kind of shit do you write in there? I don’t even know where you keep it. Come on, I’m not a total idiot.”
They were on their way to South Australia. This was chosen as it was one of the only states which Sydney had never visited. Both Aristocrat and Libby had jumped at the chance to tour the famous wine regions around Adelaide, an activity suggested by Macquarie.
“Please,” Sydney had said when he brought it up. “We live together. Don’t pretend you don’t just drink straight vodka and cry.”
After an uneventful journey to Melbourne (not counting the many renditions of Toto’s Africa by Macquarie, which had contributed to Sydney acquiring a migraine), they pulled up in the underground car park of Aristocrat’s fancy hotel. Sydney took in the soothing shade of cream painted on the walls, and the marble panelling around the lifts.
“This is nice,” they said, yawning.
“You should see the car park at the office,” Macquarie said pretentiously.
“How would you know what it looks like?” Sydney snapped, referencing his lack of a driver’s licence. Macquarie pretended this attack on his fragile masculinity hadn’t just taken place, and marched ahead to stab the call button for the lift.
“Oh my god!” Aristocrat yelled with a flamboyant wave from the front counter as they emerged on the restaurant floor.
“Stop sulking,” Sydney said, poking Macquarie in the ribs. “There’s only space for one drama queen on this trip.” They straightened up as Aristocrat came to a screeching halt before them, grabbing Macquarie and lifting him off his feet. Macquarie tried to protest, but Aristocrat’s whack on the back had left him winded.
Sydney shook Aristocrat’s hand next. “Please tell me you drive,” they said.
“Drive? Like, a car?” Aristocrat giggled. “I live in Brunswick, right off the tram line. Why pollute the earth unnecessarily?”
Sydney fell to their knees. “REEEEEEE,” they screamed.
Aristocrat’s brow furrowed in concern. “Did you just say ‘ree’ out loud?”
Sydney stood back up and smiled. “I’m good. Just needed to let it out.”
Aristocrat laughed nervously and looked to Macquarie for help. Macquarie was bent over his knees, regaining his breath.
“So, it’s been a long trip,” Sydney continued.
Aristocrat’s face lit up in a genuine smile. “I know just what you need to relax.”
“A room,” Sydney said, but unfortunately Aristocrat spoke at the same time and his voice was louder.
“Pokies.”
Macquarie looked up from his recovery position. Sydney rolled their eyes. “Please, he’s already addicted to his work and alcohol.”
“Hey, speaking of gambling,” Aristocrat said, winking to Macquarie. “Remember those credit default swaps I bought off you on Sydney’s mortgage?”
Macquarie groaned so hard the marble counter was almost crushed under the pressure wave. “How much do I owe you?”
Sydney stared at the two men in disbelief. “Hello? I am right here?”
They had lost interest in Sydney and were busy organising an electronic funds transfer. Sydney threw their arms up into the air and stormed off towards the gaming room. “Hey, come on, I went short on those CDS,” Macquarie yelled as a last-ditch attempt to salvage the situation.
Sydney sat themselves down at the pokies and inserted the obligatory one dollar. Even though they were basically de facto with Macquarie now, and consequently had millions of dollars at their disposal, Sydney was still a scrimping bogan-slash-student at heart.
Macquarie entered with two glasses of apology cider right as Sydney managed to win five bucks with a five cent bet.
“Wrong choice of reconciliation gift,” Sydney said, accepting the drink and downing about half the glass in one go. “You noobs are making me drive another eight hours tomorrow.”
“Five dollars?” Macquarie whined, looking at the screen. “That’s not fun.” He threw a fifty at the girl behind the counter, who proceeded to count out a stack of change.
“What are you doing?” Sydney hissed.
Macquarie drained his glass and giggled hysterically, shoving the whole fifty dollars into the machine. “Fuck off,” Sydney yelled, but it was no use. Macquarie proceeded to bet the entire balance, plus Sydney’s hard-earned five dollars.
“Oops,” he said, when he won nothing. Sydney mimed glassing him.
“Oh, there you are, good,” Aristocrat said jovially, waving a set of keys as he trotted over. “I got your room ready. Hey Jackie,” he greeted the girl behind the counter.
“Hey boss,” Jackie replied.
Macquarie was staring up at Sydney with puppy eyes. Sydney always found it ironic how the colour of his eyes exactly matched that of a hundred dollar note. They grabbed the keys off Aristocrat.
“Don’t want to finish your drink?” Aristocrat said, pointing. “I mean, enjoy it while you can. They have tiny glasses in South Australia.”
Sydney glared and walked off. Macquarie shrugged and finished the drink for them. “Should’ve got your driver’s licence, mate. We wouldn’t be in this situation if you had.”
---
“Ooh, it’s a manual,” Aristocrat said from the back seat, nodding in appreciation as Sydney threw the gears, swearing as yet another coffee-carrying hipster ran into the narrow city street in front of the car.
“Aye,” said Sydney. “And don’t talk to me again until we get out of the city, unless you have meth.”
“Hey, you were the one who wanted to do this road trip,” Macquarie whined. “Why are you complaining?”
Sydney turned to face Macquarie, dark bags under their eyes accentuated by the diminished light which snaked its way past the forest of buildings and through the grimy windscreen. “Don’t tell me you’ve never done shit which you regret.”
Macquarie pursed his lips in thought. “Well…”
“How about that ten million dollars you lost on the CDS?” Aristocrat piped up in the back, grinning.
“TEN MILLION?!” Sydney shrieked, slamming their foot on the accelerator and almost totalling a group of office workers.
“Don’t worry, we decided to divide by a thousand,” Macquarie grumbled. “Token of goodwill. We’re not animals, Sydney.”
The rest of the journey to Adelaide went quietly in comparison, with one minor incident during the lunch stop in Horsham. Macquarie and Aristocrat were drawing on the café placemats when Macquarie noticed a scribbled message by the edge of the table: “Call me! xx 042-517-350”.
“Sexy,” Macquarie said. “Imma do it.”
“You really are an asshole around your friends,” Sydney snapped irritably.
“No, he’s just an asshole in general,” Aristocrat corrected good-naturedly.
Sydney almost left them to fester there, but then Macquarie had very seriously offered to drive for a couple of hours down the highway, if Sydney quickly taught him how to change the gears in the backstreets of Horsham. Such a self-sacrificing proposition, unusual for Macquarie, had touched Sydney’s heart.
They crossed into SA around 1.30pm, which immediately became 1 o’clock. Aristocrat gasped loudly as they passed a lit-up petrol station outside Bordertown.
“What?” Sydney scowled. “It’s a petrol station, and it’s the same price as Melbourne.”
“They have electricity,” Aristocrat whispered, and he and Macquarie erupted into raucous laughter.
“You guys better tone that down once we pick Libby up,” Sydney warned. “You think I’ve been tough? Libby will punt you into orbit.”
“Who is Libby again?” Aristocrat asked.
Macquarie sighed. “She’s a steelworker from Whyalla. You know, that place with the Arrium plant, or Onesteel, or Liberty, whatever you want to call it.”
“Into orbit,” Sydney said again, and Macquarie shut his mouth.
“How do you guys know all these people?” Aristocrat filled the silence, raising a manicured eyebrow.
“He’s a banker, he knows everybody,” Sydney said with a roll of the eyes.
“Especially the bankrupt ones,” Macquarie couldn’t restrain himself from saying.
“I hope you have funeral insurance,” Sydney snapped.
Thankfully, they arrived at the long steep descent into Adelaide just before Sydney reached the edge of the long steep descent into madness.
“Aristocrat, you’re flying back, and we’re taking the Sturt Highway,” Sydney decided as they slammed on the brakes behind a bus.
“I think this lane is just for buses,” Aristocrat replied gently.
“Thank you,” Sydney screamed, making a dangerous lane change.
Less than thirty minutes later, Sydney had collapsed into a comatose state in their room at the Hilton. This left Macquarie and Aristocrat to brave the CBD and go meet Libby at the Malls Balls.
“Wow, there’s literally nothing here,” Macquarie said, as they passed at least four ‘For Lease’ signs on King William St.
“At least they don’t have lockout,” Aristocrat snickered.
“Is that the tallest building, the Westpac one? Lame,” Macquarie said, changing the subject. Even as he mentioned the name, Macquarie was stroking his chin in contemplation.
“What’s on your mind?” Aristocrat asked.
“Nothing.”
“Oh, so it involves insider information. Cool, I’ll back off. I know you’d get murdered in jail.”
Eventually, after consulting several passers by, they managed to locate the Malls Balls. Libby was leaning against said Balls, arms crossed in front of her chest.
“Damn,” Aristocrat hissed. “She could murder you.”
“Don’t worry, I deal with all kinds of people in my job,” Macquarie said confidently. He strode up to Libby, his hand outstretched.
“Hey Libby!” he said cheerfully. “How’s it going?”
“Where’s Sydney?” Libby replied.
“Sleeping,” Macquarie said.
Libby looked between the two men. “Did you boys make them drive the whole way here?”
“Um…” Macquarie looked shiftily at Aristocrat.
“Assholes,” said Libby, hoisting up her massive bag and forcing her way past, back towards King William St, leaving them to bitch in solitude as they hurried to keep up with her.
Sydney had awoken for a snack by the time the group got back to the hotel. “Rest up,” Libby said, throwing her bag into the adjacent room. “I’ll drive tomorrow.”
“Oh hey,” Sydney acknowledged. “Thanks.”
Libby had driven down from Whyalla earlier that day. Being somewhat familiar with Adelaide, she had intended to shout the group dinner somewhere on North Terrace. However, she couldn’t stand Macquarie and his pretentious behaviour, and was not about to fork out money just for him and his rich buddy.
That night, Macquarie tiptoed around the room so as not to wake Sydney, and they both woke up fresh the next morning, ready for a full itinerary of day drinking.
#special tag 3#sydmac#aristocrat#libby#this is set in 2037 and i made it all up so don't anyone be inferring shit with the westpac references lol
