20 Descriptions of childhood preschool shows in the 90s. I posted these on a nostalgic page on fb. See if you remember some of these?
1. A group of animated baby versions of puppets based on a short, like maybe 2 minute musical segment in a film from the 1980s. They sang a lot and never left the room their sitters face never was seen.
2. Reading books with epic theme
3. A city vibe with puppets on a street, a enormous bird a giant shag carpet looking elephant a literal trash man in a bad mood, a little red dude who is super happy, blue dude, purple monster, random cast of humans, who never get recast or leave and we watch grow up and older, random shorts with letters and numbers of the day bc its educational. Been around literally since the '70s at the least.
4. A dude who writes his ordiniary maginative life in a journal with a blue food named dog his overdramatic thespian older sister, his blue neighbor, stuck up jock and mayor's daughter classmates and Principal who hates him and i vaguely remember perminant records mentioned as a scare tactic. Has a crush on his neighbor who has a name of a condiment. Super hero persona in his dreams. Antagonist of main character of series for a bully who has a feline sidekick. Loves burgers and also he stans a band who is named after a variant of vegetable akin to radish used for salads.
5. Babies and a mean 3 year old cousin. A dog, screw driver escapees from a playpen, twins a redhead afraid of every thing, adults who leave their kids unsupervised bc their elderly babysitting grandpa falls asleep and the kids destroy the house and have a vivid imagination.
6. A giant dog, a girl with two names, a series of books, films, and animated shows.
7. An arrdvark with animal friends and a library card to make life easier.
8. A show set in a train station about trains and random people. I believe the woman who Frenchy from grease (1978) was in the cast and ringo from the beatles? I haven't seen it since I was a youngin'.
9. Fruit twins in striped sleepwear.
10. Children singing and dancing to kiddie nursery rhymes because they somehow convince a network to greenlight their project. They had 2 pink and blue mascot friends. I don't recall their names.
11. A limber clown couch potato with a shy doll best friend have some cozy adventures.
12. A spooky show with a spooky opening theme, always starting at a campfire club story.
13. A man who lives in two worlds. The first is a house, and he feeds his fish, switches his attire and footwear, and sings with his friends who live in close proximity. Then he takes a trolly to a creepy castle of puppets. One is nightmare fuel. There's people there sometimes. I believe there was a king.
14. A blue dude who is manifested when kids of the world with rings join forces with their own strengths.
15. Seemingly ordinary teens turned super aided by an anxiety ridden robot friend and a powerful wall dude. They fight big bads and bosses with their secret personas and identity. Sometimes, they join forces like a transformer, and all their powers combine, and they become giant robot thing and defeat said people.
16. Bill Bill Bill at school.
17. A family living on an island and a giant yellow, inverted voiced, weird named frog hybrid creature.
18. Animated ponies from the 80s.
19. A purple dinosaur who loves you and goes from a doll to full sized. He likes pumpernickel bread. He sings songs. He has elementary school friends and dinosaur friends. One of the dinosaur friends' names is an abbreviation for oral sex. 😉.
20. A rraspy voiced woman with puppet friends who happen to be animals, that can sing songs that are like the energizer bunny. annoying children everywhere since the '80s.

1824 Aug., Fri. 27
6 3/4
11 1/2
Expected the person from Waller’s at 8 – Did not come till 8 35/60 – Buckley came at 9 25/60 – Makes silk pelisses, spencers, morning gown – Their business is chiefly with the ladies – Plain black silk pelisse 11 1/2 guineas, much trimmed 14 guineas.
Breakfast at 10 – Wrote 1 1/2 page to my aunt – Went out at 12 – To Temple Bar, up Fetter-Lane etc. to No. 54 Hatton Garden, to the office of the sitting magistrates – After waiting 1/4 hour, admitted into the room where sat the 3 magistrates (a private business about a great robbery had kept the room private before) –
Asked permission to see the tread-mill – They hemmed and ahed – Said they were not the visiting magistrates – Could not grant me permission – Asked who could – They gave no direct answer – I said a person at Clerkenwell had told me yesterday the sitting magistrate in Hatton Garden could give permission, but if he could not I only wished to know to whom I ought to apply –
They asked if I was alone – Then said it was for my own sake they would not grant permission – It was not a fit sight for me to see alone – I expressed my utter ignorance of this, but said would it not be enough to have a police officer with me to protect me against the tread-wheel people, the parcel of felons, as one of the magistrates called them –
He said the governor would not admit the police officer, for a police officer had no business there – That thinnest and most gentlemanlike magistrate then said I must give my name and address – They were obliged to be particular about admitting strangers – I said I was Miss L– [Lister]. The gentleman asked if any relation to the Ribblesdale family – I answered of the same family originally, but far too distant to be called a relation –
He said if I would call again tomorrow and bring some respectable man with me, I should have permission to see the tread-mill – I answered I would bring the master of the hotel – Thought I to myself, it is not worth such trouble, but I am determined not to be beaten – Felt a little annoyed at the moment but it soon wore of[f] –
In returning, strolled almost to the end of High Holborn, then down Chancery Lane, turned into Lincoln's Inn, and walked along-side Lincoln’s Inn garden – Went out at the other end, thro’ Chichester vents into Chancery Lane again – Thence along Fleet to Saint Paul’s, into Saint Martin’s le Grand to see the new post-office –
The building of the underground story just raised even with the ground – A curious collection of differently sized and shaped compartments – Counted above 50 workmen – probably there were several more – It will be a noble building, fronting in a long line into Saint Martin’s le Grand, close to Newgate Street –
Then along Cheapside, and down Queen Street in a direct line to the new iron bridge (the Southwark bridge) finished in 1819 – Paid a penny to go up it – Stood gazing from the middle of it (1st 1 side then the other) a minute or 2 – The new London bridge to be on this side (West, of the old one) –
Having gone just off the bridge into Southwark, was obliged to pay another penny to return again – Along Thames Street into Bridge Street (full of insurance offices), along Fleet Street and the Strand to Piccadilly –
At the end of Thames Street, close to Bridge Street, passed the office of “Mr. Vallance” close to that of “Mr. Dempster,” surely the partner of Mr. James V– [Vallance] Miss V– [Vallance]’s brother – No high situation even for an attorney –
Walked to the end of Surrey Street and back, in returning along the Strand – Called at Dobson’s, No. 166 Strand – The self pointing pencils 10 /. [shillings] each – Pocket mariners’ compasses from 7 or 8 shillings to 2 or 3 guineas – Wood, the bookseller near Saint Martins in the Strand, recommended by Whitley to give me information about the publishers of the Zoological Journal etc, not at home –
Found myself in Piccadilly at 3 1/2 – Too soon to come home – Sauntered Pall-Mall East and the new buildings there abouts, then along the new buildings beyond Regent Street, etc. Then walked to No. 1 New Bond Street and Mr. Truefitt cut my hair in 20 minutes, and himself being wanted (by appointment) his head man dressed it in half hour more – In large curls, not low down the face –
Surprised to find I had only 1/2 crown to pay – He would give Lady’s maids lessons, an hour each lesson for 5 /. [shillings] and 4 lessons might might be enough to teach them to dress a crop – Said Mr. Truefitt, ‘They cannot cut hair so well in Paris as London’; but he believed Monsieur Taileur in the Palace Royal was the best cutter – I was to be careful not to let them cut too much off –
Strolled to the end of (up and down) the Burlington passage (by the Shonbridge in Bond Street only asks 1 1/2 guineas for ladies riding hats) then made the best of my way, got home at 5 35/60 and sat down to dinner at 5 40/60 –
Gravy soup and roast beef very good, potatoes and kidney beans, and hot cherry-and-currant tart – and another pint of port – Mr. Webbe brought in the beef – Told him the difficulty about the tread-mill and asked him to go with me tomorrow – He very civilly said he would, with pleasure. As also to the Jew’s synagogue –
Got a card from Walwyn and Gayford, wine merchants, 7 Old Bond Street and 1 Burlington Arcade – Mr. Webb said it was all a puff – Asked him about Wright in the Haymarket piazzas – Still worse, said Mr. Webb – That man somehow makes it answer to pay £900 a year for advertisements tho’ he never has a customer a 2nd time –
You can only get good wine from a respectable merchant and must pay the price – Griffith’s Pall-Mall, the best – Could not get good old wine under £3 a dozen gents gentlemen generally cheated in buying wine unless they employed someone who understood it – Griffiths perhaps would not sell such wine as I was now drinking at 60 /. [shillings] (£3., a dozen) but Mr. Webbe had 3 pipes of it, and would let me have some if I chose –
After dinner, [wrote] the whole of this (but the 1st 1/2 lines) of today which took me till 8 – By the way, it struck me this morning from the prices marked in the windows, that one should go to Cheapside for cheap bargains –
Mr. Webbe recollects Mr. Lawton (Charles). I asked him, having heard from M– [Mariana] that he recollected Mr. Webb – From Mr. W– [Webb]’s description (he knows Ms. Lawtons) it must be C[harles] L[awton]– He was here Mr. W– [Webb] thought 5 years ago, but it might be longer –
From his habits and manners (up all night in bed all day) Mr. W– [Webb] thought he gambled a great deal, and was rather in a low way – He had a friend here, a Captain Baker, a sad dissipated scamp whom Mr. Webb got out of several scrapes (the watch-house etc) and at last lost £25 by him –
Very fine day – As warm as yesterday. Fahrenheit 70º at this moment (8 5/60) in my writing desk – Wrote the latter 1/2 page and the 1st 1/2 page 3 of my letters began this morning to my aunt, and wrote a page to M– [Mariana], all which took me till 10 10/60 –
Went to my room at 10 ¼. E [two dots, treating venereal complaint] O [no dots, marking discharge]
Part 2 of @LaFemmeAd’s Walking Tour covers the stops mentioned on Anne’s outing from today’s entry as well as tomorrow’s from 28 Aug. 1824!

Newton’s journals are hard to read, but contain some intriguing clues.
Natasha passed her book to Sir Stephen. “Let me see yours,” she said.
They traded, and his was both different and similar – it seemed to contain what might have been mathematical equations or chemical formulae set aside on their own lines, but written in a combination of letters, numbers, and zodiacal symbols that meant very little.
“Okay,” said Nat. “The good news is, it’s not the Voynich manuscript.” That was a start.
“That’s… something, I guess,” said Sam, not sounding particularly impressed. “Why would he write it in code?”
“Because alchemists were witches and heretics and he didn’t want to be burned at the stake,” said Nat. “Now, the most likely solution is that it’s a simple letter substitution code. In English the easiest way to crack one of those is to assume that the most frequent letter is E and then work from there. It’s possible he just moved the whole alphabet some number of letters, so we’ll start by…”
“It’s not English,” said Jim, looking over Sir Stephen’s shoulder. “It’s Greek.”
Nat looked up sharply, and found that Jim himself looked as surprised by this pronouncement as she was. “How do you know?”
“I… just know,” he said, his mouth full. Nat did wonder if the food did him any good, or if he only ate because his cells were mimicking hunger. If the cells could use food to replenish themselves, wouldn’t they do so instead of quickly dying off?
Jim pointed at something on the page Sir Stephen was looking at. “Look how many of the words end in E-L,” he said. “Like there. You think that means anything?”
Nat took the book back. The place where Jim’s finger had come to rest said tiseltidikwel… if Nat assumed the EL’s were the ends of the words… she turned over a napkin and began to write on it. “Assume it’s Greek. A lot of Greek nouns end in O-S. If you swap O with E and A with I…” She played with the consonants for a moment, and then had a revelation. It was a simple letter substitution cipher, but it was based on phonology! “Exchange nonvoiced stops with nonvoiced,” she said, “voiced with voiced, and glides with glides… and you get kalos k’agathos, beautiful and good!” That was a fairly common phrase in classical Greek, which had often conflated goodness with beauty – as, for that matter, had alchemy.
She smiled at Jim. “How did you know?” she repeated.
He looked uncomfortable now. “I don’t know. It’s like when I knew where he’d been living, or knew about Star Trek. It’s just kind of there, in the background of my brain.”
It seemed that Neustadt had definitely imparted more knowledge to his creations than he thought – and it seemed to be almost unconscious knowledge, imparted unconsciously. Interesting. “All right,” said Nat. “So we write out the cipher, and then we’ll just have to translate it. If somebody else wants to work out the letters, I can read the Greek.”
The notebooks were slim, but since all the work had to be done by hand – deciphering the looping hand, then matching each of the letters with its cipher, and then translating – it was a very slow process. The group finished their breakfast, paid, and then moved on from café to café, ordering water and weak wines, or stopping in souvenir places for notebooks and pens to use. Slowly, they began to work out the first few pages.
The book Sir Stephen had first taken remained utterly indecipherable – the symbols used in the formulae were not in the same cipher as the other two. The one Nat had started with was full of cryptic statements, not unlike the one from the published writings about the balance of libra and the venom of scorpio. The smoke of the burning Tower blots out the Sun, hiding it from the Fool’s sight, said one line. Another read only by gold can gold be made, but purity is essential, said another – compared to the rest, that was downright lucid. Nat assumed it meant that the reactor needed a sample of gold to start with, like the elixir needed a sample of DNA, and that any contamination would affect the final result.
Yet a third noted that The Holy Dove is the principle, in Brother Aleksio’s keeping. Nat frowned, tapping her pen on top of her notebook.
“The Holy Dove,” she said. “That’s the monastery in Montenegro he told us about. I’m gonna guess the item Brother Aleksio was holding onto for him was a sample of the purest gold Newton knew about, to use as a template for the Philosopher’s Stone.” She looked up at Sharon. “Did Fury get back to you about that address in Australia?”
“Yeah,” said Sharon. “It’s a sheep ranch the size of Cornwall and one of the most sparsely-populated places on Earth outside of Antarctica.”
“That would make it a perfect place to build something like the Philosopher’s Stone,” Nat observed. “Someplace where if it goes wrong, not many people are around to get hurt.” Much like Rasputin working in Siberia. Certainly better than Daedalus starting the thing up in the middle of Atlantis. “Where’s that card he gave us? We were supposed to ask for Brother Luka?”
Sharon pulled it out and looked at it. “Yeah, Brother Luka.”
“What are you thinking?” asked Allen, as Nat tilted her head and stared at the bottomless Adriatic sky.
“I’m thinking…” she said, “that we should probably go to Kotor after all. At the very least, we can poke the bear trap and see if it closes. Brother Luka might be able to tell us what Newton wants with the Philosopher’s stone.”
“What would he seek, if not to make gold?” asked Sir Stephen.
“I don’t know,” said Nat. “Which is what worries me.” If you didn’t know what something was, it could be anything. “It would be good to know that all he wants is gold, because that means none of the worse possibilities are true.”
“What kind of possibilities?” Sharon asked warily.
“I don’t know,” Nat repeated. “That’s why they’re worse.”
Fury wasn’t able to get them a flight to Montenegro – there was no airline that flew from Santorini to Tivat. There were ferries, but those went to Athens or Crete. After a couple of hours of research, Sharon found a cargo boat that was willing to let them ride along to Budva, as long as they stayed out of the way of the crew and didn’t complain too much. To get to Fira’s harbor, they took a rather hair-raising ride down the incredibly steep – and sometimes very close to the cliffside – Santorini cable cars to get there.
“Look, they’ve got donkeys,” said Clint, pointing to a winding path below them. A train of the animals were taking people and goods down to the docks.
“That must be how they got stuff up and down before the cable cars,” Sharon observed.
“So why are we risking our necks on this thing when we could be riding donkeys?” asked Clint. The car bumped over one of the cable towers.
“I thought you said horses were bastards,” said Sam.
“I didn’t say that, Robin Hood said that,” Clint told him. “And horses are bastards, but donkeys are nice little beasts. We’ve got one on the farm. He’s a pet. His name is Barney, after my brother.”
“I bet your brother was flattered,” Sharon said with a smile.
Jim was leaning on the window, staring down at the scrubby cliffs. Nat touched his shoulder again. “How do you feel?” she asked. He’d been pretty quiet since the moment he’d given him the key to Newton’s cipher, as if lost in thought.
“Who’s the guy who had the sword dangling over his head?” asked Jim.
“Damocles,” Nat replied. She remembered it less from the myth and more from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
“Like that,” he said.
Over breakfast in the ship’s little mess hall the next morning, Jim contemplated his three flasks. They’d marked the open one with an elastic band so he would know it wasn’t quite full. The other two still had complete doses in them.
“It’s been five days,” he said. “That means I ought to take the first one, right?”
“That’s what she said,” Allen agreed.
“I wonder what would happen if I waited a day,” Jim said. “Would that help me last longer, or would I just start falling apart too fast for it to help me? And what happens with the one we used some of on Dr. Wilson’s bird?” He didn’t sound as if he begrudged this anymore, just resigned to his uncertain future. If they ever saw Desrosiers again, Nat thought, she would have an even harder time getting away.
Jim unscrewed the flask lid and sniffed the contents, as he might a bottle of brandy. There didn’t seem to be any smell to them, so he took a swig and promptly gagged.
“Oh, god, that’s foul!” he wheezed, as Allen whacked him on the back. “It’s like having a warm slug crawling down your throat!”
The unasked question hung in the air. Jim thought about it for a few moments, then took a deep breath and downed the rest of the flask, as fast as he could, without stopping to breathe. There were tears in the corners of his eyes by the time he was done, more from effort than from emotion.
“What’s it taste like?” asked Sam, curious.
“Like mud mixed with tobacco juice.” Jim wiped at his eyes, then grabbed the nearest cup – it happened to be Allen’s coffee – and downed that, too, followed by a bottle of sparkling water Nat handed to him. “I can still taste it,” he whimpered.
“Do you feel any better?” asked Nat.
“I can’t tell yet,” he said.
She didn’t bother to ask him if it were worth it. People went through much worse things in the name of staying alive: dialysis and surgery, amputations and chemotherapy. Compared to such medical procedures, swallowing slimy stuff that tasted bad was probably nothing at all.
“If it is any comfort,” said Sir Stephen, “Buckeye and myself dared each other to eat worse things than slugs.”
Jim eyed him with distaste. “Like what?” he asked, then held up a hand. “No, don’t. Don’t answer. The middle ages were disgusting and I don’t want to hear about it.”
“It was not so very bad,” Sir Stephen protested.
“Yes, it was,” said Nat. “People kept pigs in their dining rooms and threw the contents of their chamber pots into the street. Then there’s black death, smallpox, tuberculosis…”
“If Newton has made many of you,” Sir Stephen said, “then versions of yourself will have seen all these things change over the past several centuries. I envy you that.” He’d been thrown into the modern world with no preparation whatsoever.
“Yeah, I’m fine with not having seen it,” said Jim.
“Buckeye’s father always said that what did not kill a man made him stronger,” Sir Stephen told him.
“I don’t have a father,” Jim replied, giving a very clear signal that he wanted to end the conversation. However interested he might have been in the man earlier, he had clearly decided that he was not Sir James Buckeye, and didn’t want to try to be.

TOP 5 PLANNERS TO HELP YOU WITH GOALS
Every goal setter, and I know this includes you, has a certain desire to find just the right goal planner to catch all the things, all the thoughts, all the ideas, all the goals for the year at hand.
With 30 years’ worth of planners surrounding me today, I thought I would give you some intel on my five faves from the group thus far.
First, the Day Designer planner, a beautiful choice to be sure.
The number one thing I liked about the Day Designer Planner was its feminine beauty. If you go to www.daydesigner.com, you will see 10 to 12 different designs that are just beautiful.
Each one has pocket in the front, useful for tucking away notes or receipts.
At the beginning of each month is a monthly calendar.
Each page begins with a quote from a thoughtful person.
As far as the rest of the page layout – it had a space for the top 3 priorities, a to-do list and a notes area, as well as a separate space for Daily Gratitude notes.
I used this planner primarily for my work life goals and carried it with me to all events and meetings, and I was proud to do so because it was that pretty.
However, practically speaking, it was bulky and heavy so when carrying on planes and in taxis, etc., it was a bit annoying.
That being said, this planner’s beauty and functionality overshadows its bulk. Check out all the designs at www.daydesigner.com. I think they even have mini versions now!
Next up, was My Bliss Book planner. This was my choice for 2019 and I found it as I was literally enjoying one of the most blissful periods of my life at that point, spending my days tending to my daughter and her newborn baby at the time, Miss Molly.
MyBliss Book, by Lara Land, was fun and interesting to try out. She designed it to tap into our ability to do some forward visioneering and had space within each month to draw out our goals as well as to journal about them.
Then, at the start of every week, she designed a page dedicated to rewriting the week’s goal, and aligning it with the monthly goal, the yearly goal and your ultimate Bliss vision toward which you were working. It also contained prompts for a word of the week, giving back to others and to yourself.
Every undated daily page had space again to write out the number 1 goal for the day, a way to tie it back to your vision, etc. Each page also contained space for appointments throughout the day, notes, positive things done well that day, and the day’s affirmations.
As you can see by this description, this planner is really a system to train its user to incorporate some positive habits on a daily basis, all the while keeping the bigger picture in front of you.
From the standpoint of design and form, this planner is elegant, bound in a buttery soft leather. Its pages are gilded and at 5x8, it was easy to tote and not cumbersome at all.
She also created some neat videos to encourage you along the way and throughout the year.
I’m glad I tried it out for the year; however, I will say that two things that would make it better would be bible quotes and a monthly calendar to begin each period.
Don’t get My Bliss Book if you don’t enjoy lot’s of repetition and journaling because that is a big part of the system. Check it out for yourself at www.laraland.us.
My next fave is one that I received as a gift, and was called the Goal Digger planner. First of all, I love the name
It was created with a cover of white with gold dots and bronze looking binders, and was the 8x5 size. So --it was pretty, feminine, sturdy, yet a really good size for carrying around.
This undated planner did have a monthly calendar which you could write in the dates. I am fine with that so it worked for me.
One thing I loved was that the first two pages of this planner prompted me to write a letter to myself about the awesome year to come. I re-read it as I prepped this podcast and 90% of the vision was in fact, achieved.
The page layout was a week at a glance, so 7 days over 2 pages of paper. Each page included space at the top for 5 brief goals, and then each page had room for five tasks/appointments/notes for each day.
Then at the end of each month, there were 2 pages dedicated to goal analysis: accomplished, changed and coming up goals. Finally, at the back of the planner were 10 Notes pages.
What didn’t work for me was the lack of room to capture all the tasks and appointments needed on a daily basis. This planner would be good for someone who has fewer than 10 total notes/appointments/tasks and goals to write and keep up with each day.
So on balance, this planner was pretty, had a great name, but was not functional for me at that time.
As a matter of fact, I supplemented it with a second planner, which in the end was not all that efficient. I don’t believe this particular planner is available anymore, but since it was one of my favorites, I thought I’d mention it.
Next up is the Commit 30 planner. So many things to like about this one.
First of all, it is leather bound, and all of the colors are vibrantly beautiful. I have had the blue, the gold and the magenta versions...all beautiful in the own right.
This planner is designed around a great idea: you can commit to one goal each month and at the end of the year, you will have achieved 12 goals that are important to you.
Each month starts with a page for your monthly goal and the 5-6 action steps you will take to achieve it. Also, it has analysis on the page asking you to answer why you did or did not reach your goal, how you would rate your efforts, and your next steps.
On page 2 there is a prompt to write out what you commit to doing for the next 30 days with the reward for committing, planning and succeeding.
Each month has a full monthly calendar to lead it off, and then the week is spread out over 2 pages. Along the borders of each page there are sections for Life and Work to dos, and notes.
Oh, and another design element I really liked was that each month began with a full page motivational quote. Love that!
At its size of 5x8, I was surprised at how well it worked for me as a life and work goal planner. The layout and the prompts really speak to the disciplined and committed part of my soul😊.
This planner is one I highly, highly recommend for its functionality and its form, both which are beautiful. I used it for 3 years in a row and gave many copies of it out to my friends and family. Check it out at www.commit30.com.
As much as I love the other planners, my favorite of my life so far is my 2020 planner, the Christian Planner.
The one I have is bound in beautiful teal leather and is the largest in size by measurement, at 10 x 7. Because its planning pages are laid out with a week over 2 pages, it is still pretty sleek.
This planner combines God and goals, and that’s one of its main attractions for me.
At the front of the planner, It has a few pages dedicated towards your vision board and bucket list, and also a page for healthy habits and a page for your annual goals.
These are followed by 2 annual calendars. In addition, each month begins with a monthly calendar.
Each week begins with a page for weekly sermon notes and a page for bible study notes. As a Christian seeking to integrate my faith and my goals, this is perfect!
As I mentioned, the week is laid out over two pages and there is plenty of room due to the size of the page for all the things. There is dedicated space for notes, daily healthy habit tracking and journaling.
But my favorite thing is that each week comes with a scripture for that week.
Love that.
At the back of the planner, there are an additional 12 blank note pages.
The main improvement I would like to see with this planner would be to shorten it to the 8 x 5 size and perhaps make it a page/day format.
I like planners that are more the size of books than notebooks, don’t you? You can find the 2021 Christian Planner at www.christianplanner.com.
So there you have it, a recap of some of the best planners I have enjoyed as I have lived out the life of a goal crafter.
Do you have a favorite that you’d like to share? I’m sure the community would enjoy hearing about it. Just leave a message in the comment section and all the subscribers will see it.
2021 is approaching pretty quickly now. Select and order your planner now before the year gets away from you so that you can begin planning for another incredible year of goal crafting and achievement.
I pray that the goals you have set are progressing and that God honors the work of your hands and you flourish, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
Be blessed!

Fall 2019: DRAFT of Syllabus
COMM 302-002 Research Methods (Fall 2019)
Instructor: Strickland, Michael, M.A. Class Time and Location: 3:00–4:15 pm (T/TH) at Multipurpose Classroom Building Room 203 Office: C-217 (T: 426-4328) E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: Before/After class, or by appointment
COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to shed light on the foundations and applications of scientific research in communication. In this class, students will learn new ways of asking and answering questions that will alter your approach to our mediated world. In particular, this course’s objectives include: 1) understand scientific research methods and basic concepts of research evaluation; 2) learn when to use the most appropriate method to investigate a certain research question; 3) learn how to design and conduct communication research; and 4) learn how to interpret the meaning of numerical results. Students will practice some basic statistics to learn how to interpret data tables and statistical relationships.
This course has three sections: the nature of social science research in general, quantitative methods (e.g., survey, experiment, and content analysis), and qualitative methods (e.g., observation techniques, interview). Once you learn diverse research methods and related concepts, your critical thinking and reasoning to see communication research in terms of how it is done, how it could be done better, and how it can be done to answer specific questions will all be enhanced. Some of you may have reluctant feelings about this course because you think that this course has little to do with your career goals. However, I want to remind you that all areas (e.g., communication, journalism, public relations, management, and marketing) begin with a solid foundation in research, and all areas are consistently related to the research process.

All assignments in this course should be original, NOT a recycled topic submitted for another course. All writing must be presented in clear, compelling, and grammatically correct papers and be typed in 12 font size and double-spaced with one-inch margins. Also, students are required to follow the APA writing style (6th ed.). The guide and samples of the APA writing style will be made available on Blackboard (BB). Each student is responsible for knowing and following the format requirements. All writing assignments should be uploaded to BB in time AND submitted as a hard copy of your paper at the beginning of class. If your paper fails to follow the requirements noted above, 3% to 20% of the assigned grade will be deducted.
General Tips For Writing:
• All sources should be listed in paper and references following the APA writing format.
• Periods and commas go inside quotation marks (“." or “ ,"). Please adhere to this convention.
• Use direct quotes sparingly. Direct quotes should comprise no more than 5-10% of the total word count of the essay. If the use of direct citations is considered necessary, note the page number with the author’s last name and publication year (Thomson, 2012, p. 237).
• Write from the third-person point of view (he, she, it). Do NOT use the first-person (I, we) or second-person (you) point of view unless specifically allowed in the assignment.
• After you give an author's full name once, then use the author's last name in the remainder of your paper. Do not use the author's first name alone.
• For in-text references, when first noted in paper, all authors’ last names should be presented (Thomson, Kang, Shipka, & Kim, 2011). For sources with more than three authors, note the first author’s last name and use “et al.” for others (Thomson et al., 2012) from the second.
INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS (400 POINTS)
Class Participation (20 points) The instructor reserves the right to give you in-class exercises without a notice. Your class participation will be evaluated based on consistent attention and contribution to in-class activities including lectures and discussion.
Quizzes (100 points) The quizzes will be given anytime during class. You should complete each chapter/lecture and come prepared to take the quiz. You will take 10-12 quizzes during the semester (10 points each). Only the best 10 scores of them count toward your grade after the TWO LOWEST scores are dropped. Quizzes are based on the lecture, assigned readings, and in- class exercises for that particular class period. The format of the quizzes will vary: short answer, T/F, fill-in-the-blank, and/or multiple-choice questions.
ONLY ONE missed quiz can be excused if you submit official documentation (e.g., a doctor’s appointment slip, prescription, etc.) stating a legitimate reason for your absence on the date of the given quiz. This documentation must be submitted within one week of the missed quiz date. Excused quizzes will be not counted in the calculation of your final quiz grade, so that you will still be able to drop your lowest quiz grade.
Library Resources (50 points) Regardless of the type of research, good library skills are essential in this course. This assignment is designed to familiarize students with the resources available through Albertsons library. A specific guide will be provided in class.
Literature Review Critique (30 points) To learn how to write a literature view of research paper, you will analyze and critique the literature view of one research paper provided by Dr. Kang. A specific guide will be discussed in class later.
Data Analysis (100 points) To learn how to analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data, three assignments will be required: TWO of quantitative data (70pts) and ONE of qualitative data (30pts). You will able to learn how to run SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) with real-world data provided by Dr. Kang and how to analyze qualitative data such as fields notes and analytical memos. Specific guides will be provided later.
In-Class Exam (100 points) There will be ONE in-class exam. Examination date and time will be toward the end of the semester. Check your schedule. Exam is a mixture of multiple-choice, T/F, fill-in-the blank, and essay format. Most of the questions will come from lectures given in class, the text book, and in-class activities. A make-up exam is offered only under dire and verified circumstances (i.e., serious illness or accident, family crisis, etc.). In such circumstances, you are expected to notify me via email prior to the exam time with some form of documentation. If an adequate notification is not done before the scheduled exam time, a penalty of one full letter grade is applied to the subsequent make-up exam.
GROUP ASSIGNMENTS (600 POINTS)
Each student will be assigned a group. Each group will design and conduct a research project throughout the entire semester. The project will involve a variety of assignments including research critique and presentation, applications of research methods, and a final research project. Every member of a groups is required to actively participate in and contribute to group projects. Sixty percent of the total points for the class come from group projects. Students are expected to work closely with one another, and behave responsibly.
Group Contract (P/F) Each group is required to create a group contract and submit the contract all group members signed. The intent of contract is all group members are valuable contribute to perform all tasks necessary for the completion of this course. Failure to follow the contract will result in a lowered grade for the class.
Peer Evaluations (P/F) After completing each group assignment, group members will evaluate each group member’s performance, including themselves. Students will rank each participant on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent. The evaluations will be reflected in each group assignments grade. Failure to submit peer evaluations ON TIME will be applied to the group participation grade.
Group Participation (50 points) This course requires each student’s active and close collaboration with group members. Student’s performance on each group project will be graded based on group members’ evaluations as well as my observation (10 pts per project). Group participation will include each student’s complying group contract, attending at group meetings, completing each assignment on time, behaving in an appropriate manner, demonstrating supportive attitudes, and ultimately making valuable contribution to each project.
Research Critique and Presentation (120 points) Each group will select TWO of research articles provided by the instructor, for a 4-to 5-page paper (50 pts per) and 5-10 minute in-class presentations (10 pts per). Specific guides and presentation schedule will be discussed at the beginning of the course.
Applications of Research Designs (80 points) The primary aim of this assignment is to practice research designs which students will learn in class. Each group will work on two research design assignments (40 pts each). Specific guides will be provided later.
Research Project Paper and Presentation (350 points) Final research project is designed to lead students to do their own research from reviewing the literature, collecting and analyzing data, and discussing findings. The project will involve a variety of assignments, including research proposal (P/F), research prospectus and in-class presentation (100 pts), final paper (200 pts), research poster (30 pts), and presentation (20 pts) at the poster session. Detailed instructions will be discussed later.
GROUND RULES/EXPECTATIONS:
Class Attendance Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Your class attendance will be considered based on attendance sheets, which will be circulated at the beginning of class. Any excuse absence will be considered only based on official documentation such as the case of a documented emergency or documented student illness (certified by a physician’s signed statement that the student was too ill to attend class at the designated time on the designated date), death in the student’s immediate family (verified by a newspaper obituary or equivalent document), or participation in an official event sponsored by BSU (again, verified with the appropriate documentation). An excuse for official events also should be presented to me in advance. In the event of an illness or family death, I should be contacted and the verified excuses presented as soon as possible.
I will present materials in class that is not discussed in the reading, and you will be responsible for that material on examinations. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get lecture, DVDs, and/or exercise notes for that day by checking Blackboard. As for group assignments, your group members rely on you to attend team meetings and turn in your best effort for the project.
Deadlines One of the critical expectations of this class is that you meet your deadlines. All assignments must be submitted and/or uploaded on BB on the due dates. You should be responsible for any work lost due to technical problems (e.g., computer or printer problems).
Penalty assessments for late submissions begin once the assignments have been collected. A deduction of 10% off the assigned grade is applied to late submissions turned in within the first 24 hours (for example, from the time that assignments are collected on Tuesday until the same time on Wednesday). Assignments submitted within the second 24 hours will result in a deduction of 20% off the assigned grade. After that (a total of 48 hours), the grade is a 0% (much worse than an “F”). For late submissions, emailed assignments are acceptable considering the possibility you could not meet the instructor after class.
If you are medically unable to submit the assignment in class, please email it to the instructor before the class by 4:00 p.m. of the due date with an explanation. Official documentation stating a legitimate reason for an emailed submission is required within one week.
Academic Honesty This course will strictly adhere to the University policies regarding individual integrity, and students are expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times, demonstrating highest levels of respect for the instructor and other students at all times. Any work done for this class is assumed-and required-to be your own. Cheating, plagiarism, or any form of academic dishonesty is not acceptable. Academic plagiarism is a serious offense. Any student violating the policy will receive a grade of F in this course. Just to be clear, this includes every unacknowledged use of materials written by others (even sentences or obvious paraphrases without quotes). More information to avoid plagiarism can be found at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/. Any incidences of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (http://osrr.boisestate.edu/scp-fa/). Gift Guide: Ideas for bullet journalers
Welcome to TechCrunch’s 2018 Holiday Gift Guide! Need more gift ideas? Check out our Gift Guide Hub.
Since digital product designer Ryder Carroll’s list-based method for organizing his life first went viral five years ago, bullet journaling has become a movement of its own, helping people take charge of their time with a notebook and pen.
The system’s flexibility means it can be used for many things: time management, academic note taking, mental health tracking, meal planning, project management, scrapbooking, and more. While Carroll’s own approach is minimalistic — a simple system of lists and symbols — others have turned their bullet journals (or “bujos”) into elaborate works of art, with hand-lettering, embellishments, and illustrated “trackers” for to-do lists and goals.
In his new book, The Bullet Journal Method, Carroll explains that he began developing his “cross between a planner, diary, notebook, to-do list, and sketchbook” that eventually evolved into the bullet journal to cope with attention deficit disorder. Much of bullet journaling’s effectiveness comes from writing tasks out by hand: researchers have found that handwriting activates parts of the brain that typing doesn’t, helps people retain information, and, as Carroll puts it, “allows us to form new connections that can yield unconventional solutions and insights.”
If you know someone who’d be into bullet journaling, the end of the year is a great time to help them get the ball rolling. Veteran bullet journalers, meanwhile, probably won’t mind some new pens or stationery. This list also has suggestions for people who prefer digital journaling, too.
The definitive guide to bullet journaling
Sure, there are already a lot of bullet journaling guides online, including the original tutorial on Carroll’s site, but even seasoned bullet journaling fans can still get a lot out of his new book “The Bullet Journal Method: Track the Past, Order the Present, Design the Future.”
It includes the basics, but also motivation for people who are turning to bullet journals to help overcome hardships or achieve major life goals. Carroll is a thoughtful writer and his chapters on how bullet journaling can guide people to live more intentional, meaningful lives is a big step above the standard productivity book. The print edition ($17 on Amazon) is a beautifully produced hardback that makes a great gift.
The best notebooks
Many bullet journalers prefer to use notebooks with dotted grid paper that helps them keep things neat but also gives them more flexibility than lined or graph paper. Notebooks by Scribbles That Matter (shown above, about $23), a new U.K. brand, are gaining popularity among bullet journalers because their 100gsm paper allows them to be used with a wide variety of pens, markers, and even watercolors. Hardcover Moleskine ($12 on Amazon) and Leuchtturm1917 notebooks ($20 on Amazon) are often used for bullet journals because of their durability and paper quality. In fact, Leuchtturm1917 offers a bullet journal edition ($25) with a guide, three page markers, and stickers for labeling entries.
Bullet journals include “collections,” or individual sections dedicated to specific projects or goals. Since collections can become lengthy, some bullet journalers prefer to use traveler’s notebooks, which are several slim notebook inserts gathered in a flexible cover. The inserts can be swapped in and out, making the journal even more customizable. Japanese stationery company Midori makes the original and best-known version with leather covers (starter kits begin at $58 from Baum-kuchen). For non-leather ones, check out Cadeneta (starting from about $31) on Etsy.
Writing tools
A lot of bullet journalers prefer fountain pens because they perform especially well on the high-quality paper used in notebooks like Moleskines and Leuchtturm1917s. The Lamy Safari (starting from $30 at Goulet Pens, one of the most comprehensive fountain pen stores online) is a popular “starter pen” because of its ergonomic grip and wide variety of colors and finishes, while the Pilot Vanishing Point (starting from $148) has a retractable nib, making it ideal for people who like the feel of a fountain pen, but prefer the convenience of a click pen.
Pre-filled ink cartridges are available for Pilot and Lamy pens (and many other fountain pen brands), but if you really want to get fancy, give your recipient a set of three mini Pilot Iroshizuku ink bottles ($32 for a box of three), known for their unique colors, smooth ink flow, and quick drying times.
If your recipient does a lot of sketching, they will appreciate a set of eight Sakura Pigma Micron pens in different sizes ($14.50). For marathon journalers, gel pens are a good option because the ink, pigment suspended in a water-based gel, glides onto the page and can help alleviate writer’s cramp. The Uni-ball Signo UM-151 is one of the most popular versions and comes in many colors. JetPens currently has a set of 12 new colors for $34.
Highlighters help keep bullet journals organized, but if your recipient isn’t into blinding neon colors, try a set of Zebra Mildliners ($18 for a set of 15). As their name suggests, Mildliners are highlighters that come in subtle colors.
Stationery
One of the biggest draws of bullet journals is how customizable the system is. If your recipient is a stationery fan, consider giving them a subscription to ZenPop’s Japanese stationery pack, starting from $30 for one month. For artists, Artsnacks is packed with four to five full-sized art supply products each month (subscriptions start from $24 each month for U.S. plans and there are international options available, too).
Photo Supplies
Many people turn their bullet journals into a personal scrapbook or use it for project planning. Fuji Instax is a simple way to add photos and its Mini 70 model (starting from $60 on Amazon) weighs just 10 ounces. For diehard smartphone photographers who still want the look of instant film, the Instax SP-3 photo printer ($150) lets them print photos on Fuji Instax mini film ($44 for a pack of three).
Other options include the HP Sprocket ($100 on HP.com), which prints photos onto HP ZINK sticker paper ($10 for a pack of 20 sheets), and the Canon Selphy CP1300, one of the most popular compact photo printers ($168 on Amazon).
Digital Journalers
Pen and paper not your recipient’s thing? Consider gifting GoodNotes ($8 on the App Store), a popular app for digital bullet journalers because it does a great job of replicating the experience of writing on paper (its handwriting search function is also very useful). The app has a marketplace of downloadable bullet journaling spreads and templates created by other users. Digital bullet journals are also a good excuse to gift a stylus: an Apple Pencil for iOS users ($99 on Apple’s site) or Adonit Droid ($25 on Adonit’s site) for Android fans.
Organizers
Your bullet recipient will probably need a way to keep their notebook, pens, and other supplies together. Vitra’s Toolbox ($70 on Vitra) is a desk caddy that comes in 11 colors and is an attractive and portable alternative to clunky desk organizers. The Lihit Lab Teffa Bag in Bag ($11.25 on JetPens) fits an A5 size notebook and keeps stationery, coins, and other small things from getting lost in the bottom of their bag. Japanese stationery company Raymay’s Topliner ($16) is like a lightweight, grownup version of the pencil cases kids use in elementary school.

17 Bullet Journal Hacks To Make You Even More Organised!
Bullet Journal Hacks – tips and tricks to keep your planning on point.
There are countless ways to keep making your bullet journal better and better. The trick is to find what works for you and what doesn’t. How you use your index, how you mark collections, how you reference other pages, the list goes on. And on. And on.
I have tried a load of different bullet journal hacks and tips and tricks since I started my Bujo. Some work so so well and some, are just not for me.
I’ve made a list, of 17 of the ones that I think are worth giving a go. They might not all work for you but they’re all really simple and easy to try out.
All these bullet journal hacks add functionality to your planner system and they look super pretty too!
#1 – A Fold-Out Bullet Journal Key
If I had to choose my all time favourite bullet journal hack, it would be this one. This super handy fold-out key makes keeping track of different symbols so easy! I’ve changed my key a few times since I started my bullet journal so it’s really handy for me to have the updated one easily accessible.
I simply use a piece of scrapbook paper folded in half (I like it to be a bit more sturdy than just a piece of paper because it’s constantly being moved). I then write my key out on a post-it and washi tape it to the scrapbook paper so I can easily change it if I need to. And then tape the scrapbook paper into the cover of the journal on one side so it can be folded in and out as needed.
#2 – Corner Tabs
This is another one of my favourite bullet journal hacks and I’ve only been using it a little while. It’s simply a little triangle tab you pop on the corner of the page as a sort of bookmark. Genius. I always have mine on the page I’m currently working on. But you could make multiple ones and use them throughout your whole journal. They’re easy to re-position throughout your journal, they’re easy to make and they look so cute!
You can either make your own triangle tabs but folding a square of paper in half diagonally and then in half again. That’s how I made mine and I prefer it as it’s a bit thicker and won’t tear easily. The other option is to use the corner of an envelope, that’s even easier to make! Just cut the corner off of an envelope…that’s it!
#3 – Collection Threading
When I first read about threading, I was completely over whelmed and confused by the idea. But as it’s not a bullet journal hack I use that often, I’ve got to grips with it and use it when I really need to.
Threading is used for keeping longer collections. Say you have a ‘movie’s to watch’ spread and you’ve filled a whole page with film titles but you still want to add more. Threading is a way of adding another movies to watch spread in the same journal and being able to keep track of where it is. Let’s say the first spread is on page 20.
You’ve used the next 30 pages or so for dailies, weekly’s and even more collections! Your movies to watch spread is full up but you still want to keep track of even more films.
Don’t do what I did in my first journal and tear a page out the back of your journal and attempt to stick it in neatly next to your original movies spread. Just don’t. It’s messy and no matter how careful you are it never looks good.
Instead, just use the next available spread to start the second part of your movies to watch collection. Sounds crazy right? But all you need to do is list the page numbers of the additional spreads next to the original page number.
So, the bottom of the first spread would read something like: 20-50. Does that make sense? That way when you check up on the first spread, you know exactly where the next one is. You could also write the additional page numbers in your index too so you know where all the sections are.
Pretty nifty right? Luckily you shouldn’t need to use this hack too often. Otherwise it would get very confusing if every page had two numbers!
#4 – Marking The Edges Of Your Pages With Symbols Or Letters
This hack is great for keeping a mini log on your daily spreads. You simply add either little symbols or letters to the margin of the page. This way when you flip through pages you can quickly find which pages contain certain activities.
I like to use a B, for anything blog related. W for workouts and a – for notes. This makes finding out when I did something a whole lot easier. Especially for things that I don’t do every single day.
It’s quick and simple to do and will make finding specific tasks or even appointments easy to look up.
#5 – Color Code Edges With Washi Tape
I use this technique a lot. I use wash tape to mark off the edges of certain spreads so I can easily find them.
I’m using glitter tape at the moment to cover the whole edge of each monthly spread. This makes my monthly spreads so cute and makes finding each month really easy. Even with my journal closed I can still see where each month begins and ends.
I also sometimes use just little squares of washi tape on the edges to mark certain collections or pages I flick back to regularly.
#6 – Colour Code Edges With Stickers Or Labels
I don’t use this trick anymore, simply because I’d run out of stickers! So I made do with washi tape and then realised I actually preferred that method haha. This bullet journal hack is the same method as using washi tape on the edge of pages except you use stickers instead.
I was using the little round stickers you can buy in just about any shop in the stationery section. When I was using this method I was using it just to mark out the collections. But you could use them to mark your monthly pages or weekly pages. You could even use different colour stickers to mark the different sections.
#7 – Color Code Your Pages
This bullet journal hack is super simple to do. Just add a swatch of colour to the border part of your page. Do this for all categories you wish to keep track of and voila! An easy flip through way of finding specific pages without having to check your index every time. Colour right up to the edge of page so you can see the colours even when your bullet journal is closed. Highlighter pens work really well for this but a lot of Bujo’ers use coloured markers.
#8 – Color Coding Your Bullet Journal Index
Same principle as the first bullet journal hack. You can either just colour code the index if that’s where you prefer to look up pages. Or if you’ve used the previous bullet journal hack, then you can match up the colours on your pages to your index. Categorise your spreads in a way you can easily distinguish, e.g. blue for monthly spreads, green for anything food related, pink for business etc. Again, I use highlighter pens to do this as you can see through it very easily.
#9 – Mark Collections With Washi Tape
If you have a special collection that deserves a little more decoration than just the edges marked. You can mark these pages with decorative washi tape over the corners in a triangle shape. I just love how these look and they make these pages easy to find. There are so many cute washi tapes you can buy and I had a hard time choosing which to use for this hack but I decided on the zebra print glitter tape.
Below are some links to some of my other favourite fancy washi tapes:
Gold Foil Washi
Gold Washi Tape
Jumbo Pack of Washi
This would be a great idea for event planning pages or for big home projects. Or anything to be honest, I just love how cute they are!
#10 – Dutch Door Spreads
Love this one! It’s a really quick and fun way to add more space to certain spreads. This works particularly well for weekly spreads when you just need a bit more room than two pages. Instead of 2 pages, a weekly spread would be made up of 3 pages. The middle page is where you’re going to put in your dutch door. Simple cut a panel out of the middle page with a craft knife or scissors and you have a bunch more room to add weekly trackers or a section for notes, whatever you like! Plus, it looks awesome!

#11 – Keep Your Journal Open
Not sure if this really qualifies as a hack. But it is damn helpful!
Sometimes I need my to-do list, right in front of me, all day. If I don’t keep reminding myself of what I need to do, sometimes procrastination creeps in and nothing gets done. Something as simple as leaving my journal open is enough to just nudge me into something from my to-do list.
I’ve seen some bullet journalists on Instagram use display stands to keep their journals in front of them all day which seems like a genius idea too!
#12 – Wrap The Strap To Make A Pen Holder Or Make Your Own Pen Loop!
This hack seems a little obvious once you know about it. But when I first started bullet journalling the idea had never occurred to me! Of course, you could just buy a pen loop..but where’s the fun in that?
All you have to do to turn your elastic strap into a pen holder is; pull the bottom of the elastic strap on your journal (I know Leuchtturm and Moleskine notebooks have elastic closure straps that work well for this hack) and wrap it over the bottom left corner of the journal. Voila, one diagonal pen holder that you can just hook your pen on. Love this hack.
Another idea to keep your pen with your journal is to make your own pen loop. This is what I have been using recently and it was really fun to make and looks so cute on my journal.
All you need is a binder clip and some kind of material. You could use either elastic, fabric or thick tape. I used a type of duct tape to make mine with this really really cute cupcake design on it. Simply cut it to the size of your binder clip plus the width of your pen. Glue each end of the material to each side of the binder clip with strong glue (I added a layer of clear tape on top to make it extra secure) and there you have it.
The perfect little pen loop that you can move around your journal whenever you like and you can make as many as you want! It’s a very easy and cheap DIY and the results are awesome!
Supplies you might need:
Binder Clips
Elastic
Very Pretty Duct Tape
#13 – Categorize Your Bullet Journal’s Index
This bullet journal hack I have never actually tried but I could see this working really really well for some people. Simply split your index up into columns and use each section for a different category.
This would be a really good way of keep your dailies and monthly spreads separate or your just your collections separate from the rest of your journal pages. If you’re using the colour coding bullet journal hack from earlier you could incorporate the same colour coding from that hack into this one.

#14 – Keep A Bunch Of Post It Notes In Your Journal
Now this one has to be the simplest. But also one of the most helpful bullet journal hacks.
If you’re someone like me and you keep a lot of notes, on a lot of different sticky notes, in a lot of different places, all the time. This hack is for you.
Keep a stack of the darn things in the back of your journal! Duhh… Sounds obvious right? This way you always have some on hand, in different sizes and you can just dot down your notes and things and stick it straight where it needs to go.
Some of my favourite sticky notes:
Owl Sticky Notes
Butterfly Sticky Notes
Floral Sticky Notes
#15 – Migrate Only On A New Page
I find, that a good way to make sure I do something, is the prospect of having to right out the same tasks again…and maybe even again.
I hate rewriting things because it’s a horrible reminder that I didn’t get as much done as I wanted to the day or week before. Now, although I don’t always write out tasks from the day before again, I’ve adopted a method of only rewriting them if I need to start a new page.
This way I can just work on the list from the day before if I didn’t get everything done. But if it’s time to start a new page, I’m forced to rewrite the tasks I haven’t completed. It’s a horrible feeling when I have to do this but it does make me work harder to complete things in a timely manner.
#16– Make A Pocket Or Envelope
This hack is something I have only just started doing in my journal and I am loving it. The back pocket you get in a lot of notebooks is so handy and I always use them. To the point they are bulging and making the journal all misshapen and no longer laying flat!
So, why not create another little pocket somewhere else in the journal? You could add one to the front cover or on any page you like throughout the journal.
You can either stick in an envelope and use that as the pocket or make your own. To make one simply fold three edges of a piece of paper or card stock to create the side of the pocket and then sticking it into your journal with either glue, washi tape or double-sided tape
#17 – Write Down Your Mission Statement Or Favourite Affirmations
I’m not sure this one counts as a hack either to be honest. But I think it is definitely worth putting on a bullet journal hacks list as it is something I’m sure a lot of people will find help and inspiring.
It’s always so hard to decide what to put on the first page of a notebook. So why not make it your favourite affirmation? or your favourite quote? Or your mission statement?
I love using one of these three things to start a new notebook. For the first page in this bullet journal, I have the year 2018 written across the top of the page and then the affirmation ‘New Year, New Journal, New Beginnings’ and I just love that. I think it was the perfect quote to start the year off with and I love reading it every time I pick up my journal, it’s so inspiring and motivating.
I also have my word for the year written on the first page of my journal. The word is ‘Progress’. This serves as a reminder that although I might not be where I want to be now, The little steps I take today are still progress and I am still closer than I was yesterday.
All these hacks add functionality to your planner system and they look super pretty too! Click To Tweet
Any of these bullet journal hacks take your fancy?
I love using variations of all these hacks. They help to add even more functionality to an already solid system. I recommend giving them all a go and see which ones work for you! Let me know if you try any of them out!
Those were all my bullet journal hacks, what are some of yours? Let me know, I’d love to give them a go!

One of the consistent complaints I hear from people looking to get into fly fishing is that the cost of entry is simply too high. Experienced fly fishers usually scoff at this, having slowly acquired all there gear over a period of years, but as the Immortal Hank Patterson puts it…
…the newbies have a point. Without careful planning it is easy for your first fly fishing trip to turn into a several hundred, if not thousand, dollar experiment. An experiment your significant other will almost certainly resent.
However, there is another danger in getting started: buying garbage gear. If you are looking to ensure that you don’t like fly fishing a good start is to try casting a bad rod, get soaked in poorly made waders, or spend a day fighting a cheap line. As such one of my goals for the next year is to try to highlight gear that works well at a reasonable price.
The most core piece of fly fishing gear is the rod. Hell, some people don’t even use a reel. However, the rod is also one of the places where things can get really expensive fast and most “entry+” level rods (read: a rod you wont want to replace immediately), such as the Orvis Clearwater and Fenwick Aetos, are hovering around the $150-200 marks. By the time you add a cheap reel, cheap, backing, and a reasonably good line this puts your starter package somewhere around $300, much more than most people want to spend.
To get around this you have a few options. First, you can buy one of the “kits,” which package a rod, reel, and line all together at some discount. This is how I started fishing, as most people did, but the savings here aren’t huge (though see the Echo Base at around $150, which I have never cast but gets phenomenal reviews). Second, you can check the used market, which regularly has these “entry+” rods floating around at steep discounts after people try the sport and give it up. Third, you can wait for an absurd sale on a good rod. Enter the Cabela’s Prime Fiberglass Rod.
As one piece, slow action, fiberglass rod the Prime is a rod you expect to come out of some tiny shop making crazy stuff to stay afloat, not from a mega-behemoth big box like Cabela’s. They come in weird sizes (6″ 6′ in 4 weight?), are difficult to transport, and I imagine even more difficult to sell. I have no earthly idea how this rod got past the chopping block at corporate headquarters, but God bless the mid-level manager who had the guts to suggest it and the executive who had the good sense to look the other way. Early takes from the king of fiberglass, Cameron at The Fiberglass Manifesto, were really positive and from the first time I held one at my local store I could tell that Cabela’s managed to make a rod that was not only interesting, but also appeared to be good.
Unfortunately the Prime also cost $150+, which is significantly above my “hmmm that looks interesting” outdoors gear budget. Low an behold, when the price fell to a crazy $50 a few weeks ago (as of this writing there are still some sizes available at this price), I just couldn’t resist. Curry jumped on the 7 ft 4 wt, me on the 6 ft 3 wt, and Padre grabbed one of each.
Fit and finish better than you would expect on a $150 rod, and absurdly good for a $50 rod. Compared to my old Orivs Clearwater (which retails at $198), the cork has less filler, the wraps are better, and the blank looks much classier. On the downside, the wood in the reel seat doesn’t look great, the up-locking foot is very thin, and I wish the snub-nosed half wells grip had more figure to it. Still, in this price range I can’t think of a rod I’ve seen that looks better.
None of that matters, however, if it doesn’t catch fish. To find out how they acted with a fish on, Curry and I took our rods to the only place we were sure we could not get skunked, my beloved Fossil Creek.
The plucky little three weight had more punch that you might expect. Despite the fact that it is a slow action rod it has a good strong butt that will do the work if you give it time to flex. Paired with a Leland three weight line and an AZ Wanderings furled leader I had no problem throwing single tungsten-bead headed nymphs. However, when I tried stepping up to a tungsten-bead headed nymph and a size 10 woolly bugger things went awry and the rod ran out of gas. Still, this is stronger than expected performance from a six foot three weight glass rod.
Prior to this trip Curry had been a dedicated Tenkara fisherman. By the end of the day he was throwing reasonable loops, which is a testament to how newbie friendly glass rods are.
It even got him his first fish on traditional tackle before the sun hit the water.
Throughout the day we caught several fish in the 8-10 inch range and had one monster on that managed to wiggle himself off the hook while I was trying to net him. In my experience roundtail chub, the main quarry in Fossil Creek, fight harder than smallmouth of comparable size, and each of these put a solid flex in the three weight. The big guy in particular (who looked to be 12+ inches, only a little smaller than the state record) bent the rod clear to the cork.
In case you are a trout snob and don’t like looking at chub know that the Prime can catch trout too. On a previous trip I used to rod to pull two nice rainbows out of a micro-stream, both of which the Prime fought surprisingly well despite very tight quarters. There is no reason you cannot bring in good fish on this rod.
We also caught countless, as in we literally lost count, tiny fry. These remained fun on the three, but looked a little banal on the four. If Fossil Creek has any real problem, as a fishery, it is that it is hard to keep the little fish off your fly long enough for a big one to take it. This is a good problem to have.
So what are the downsides? For one, you aren’t going to get a brand-new made in the USA rod for $50. The Prime tries to hide it’s “Made in China” scarlet letter, but if you look close enough you will find it:
Second, it only comes with a rod sock, not a tube. This is acceptable on a $50 rod, but if you were paying full price it would be genuinely annoying. I guess the accountants had to get involved at some point, and in the grand scheme of things it is nothing a little PVC pipe cannot fix.
Lastly, and this is an odd thing to say for a glass rod, my three weight is a little rear heavy. This could be solved by going with a lighter reel, as I am using my Orvis Battenkill Disc II (review HERE), and Curry’s four weight felt much better.
In summary, these are rods that punch above their weight at $150. At $50, they are stupid good. It is rare that entry level prices line up with gear you will never feel compelled to replace, but as small stream rods the Prime falls square into that category. I, for one, will be keeping mine.

Max Wilson is a graduate student studying ecology at Arizona State University. He writes here at Lesser Places, has occasionally written for Backpacker.com, and even more occasionally written for scientific journals. You can follow him on twitter @maxomillions.
How much fly rod can you get for $50? Cabela’s Prime Fiberglass Rod Edition One of the consistent complaints I hear from people looking to get into fly fishing is that the cost of entry is simply too high.
