A/N: Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope the ending is satisfying in more ways than one. As promised, I'm posting the chapter in its entirety. But in one month, I'll be replacing the text with an AO3 link. So read it here while you still can!

Chapter 29—The Nation of Zaun on AO3
Tumblr media
A/N: I can’t believe we’re here. I can’t believe we made it. I say “we” because I truly could not have finished this work if not for you, my amazing readers. Every kudos, every comment, every hit kept me going. Can you believe when I first set out to write this it was only supposed to be 15 chapters? But then y’all inspired me and I had so many more ideas that I just had to throw in. (Some of you directly affecting the plot—looking at you, @dreamyonahill and your comment about the sleep serum side effects. I wasn’t ever going to turn that into anything, but your comment made me want to explore it and it led to one of my favorite chapters, Chapter 15! Forever grateful.)
I of course must give a giant, sloppy thank you to both my betas @purplefangirl42 and @deny-the-issue. Catching my errors and leaving me reactions in google docs really made writing feel less like a solitary endeavor. And Kels, you alone kept me in check from chapters 20 onwards and were subject to so many DMs of me questioning if I was making the right choices or not. I appreciate your honesty and your comfort when the big imposter syndrome monster would rear its ugly head.
A thank you to the BR discord. Thanks for putting up with my ramblings about TMSA and for just being an amazing, supportive community of beautiful, unhinged, sexy, talented creatives.
Big thank you to anyone who did art of TMSA, commissioned or otherwise. It’s one thing to write a fic; it’s a different thing entirely seeing art derived from it, especially when it’s fanart. It’s so surreal to see it. (I’ll have you know I’ve saved all of them to my laptop/drive and I will cherish them forever. I should print them out!)
Yesterday was my 2-year ao3 anniversary and honestly, this feels like the perfect way to celebrate it.
Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

There is something so beautiful about writing characters whose entire purpose is to narrate the story. They never interact with the characters they're talking about, they just tell the story, sharing their own little interjections between moments.
My Narrator character in the story I'm writing (named Narrator for various lore reasons) is one of my favorite characters that I've ever written. All the little quirks in their speech patterns, the comments and interjections and side tangents, everything about them is incredible to me. However, one thing I love even more than writing about them is writing about those who have shaped them into who they are. Case in point: Raconteur. Specifically, this specific quote from Raconteur that I wrote in a short story about Narrator's experience becoming a narrator:
“I want my love for all the beauties of the world, big and small, to be felt. I want my appreciation for the full living experience to be heard. To change something is to be changed, and I wish for nothing more than to be changed. I wish for nothing more than to connect with the reader like they are my oldest friend, to show them the gorgeous worlds I have found, to feel whole through my stories but not empty without them.”
That quote is so perfect to me in so many ways. It really encapsulates the way I feel about my writing, while also being the crux of the way Narrator feels about their storytelling. This one quote from Raconteur turned Narrator's life around - it inspired them to cast aside a lot of the more 'technical' aspects of narration that they had been taught, and to embrace their audience while staying true to who they were.
Anyways I could talk about those two non-stop for the rest of my life,,,, not sure there was really a point to this ramble other than I LOVE character interactions so much!! Very much a character author instead of a worldbuilding one and it shows,,,,,,,

I'm making my answers that small text cause get ready for a WALL of text
6. Something I remember vividly from reading one of your fics
I remember stumbling on DWM during a week I had given myself off from work for my birthday and to recover from a con and just PLOOWWWWWING through it. I ended up a little late to a lunch party because I was glued to my phone on the couch reading the cigar scene and as soon as the kiss happened I was like FUCK I HAVE TO LEAVE NOW BUT I WANNA KEEP READING and being totally not normal at all during the drive to the lunch and having to remind myself how to be normal around people.
7. What made me the most emotional after reading
"He followed you. He came for you and saved your life and remained at your bedside and still he cannot bring himself to tell you how he feels—"
This line right here, officer. This line SHATTERED me. The heartache at the end of 17 DEVASTATED me. I cried the first time I read it and then, because I'm a masochist that loves a good cry, I read it again right before bed and cried again.
The thing that got me was that the angst was not this melodramatic thing. It was this mature kind of ache, the kind that comes from two adults who have gone through shit. Both Astrid and Silco are so true to their characters in this scene and that's what makes it hurt so beautifully because it doesn't feel shoehorned, it doesn't feel forced. And it's a familiar heartache, personally, of knowing that you need to give someone space for them to heal by themselves and work their own shit out internally because it's not only best for them but best for YOU. Because it's not fair to yourself to cling to them as much as you want to.
Okay I have to stop because I can go on and on and on about DWM and how it forever rewired my brain chemistry and how it is the reason I started writing TMSA.
Thank you Inky for blessing us with your brain.
Excuse me for hoarding this for a hot second whilst I felt the things.

What Are Navigation Audits During The Marine Cargo Inspection Services In Fujairah?
Tumblr media
Recently, there has been a lot of focus on navigational audits because they are now a TMSA mandate and are also becoming more and more prevalent in other trades, such bulk and container carriers. While the audit or marine cargo inspection services in Fujairah itself is very significant, so too are the surveyor and the business chosen to carry it out.
There is still a gap in the system: There is neither an industry standard nor obligation in place to audit navigational actions. Even though a ship spends up to 90% of its time at sea, where navigation is the primary function, it does not receive the same amount of inspection. The only parties that mention navigational audits are the Oil Majors through their TMSA program, and even then, they are neither required nor do they define a frequency or standard to be implemented, thus they are not truly guidelines.
Further, it is envisaged that Navigation will be audited in accordance with the ISM Code criteria for the global fleet. The outside auditors for the ISM DOC are often class surveyors with a background in engineering. They therefore have little ability to audit navigation. Consider how many queries about navigation were raised during your most recent DOC audit. Similar to this, during shipboard ISM SMC audits, the same auditors are in charge of auditing navigation. Every two and a half years, these audits are conducted, and during that period, there may have been seven or more different Masters. It is difficult to arrive at a trustworthy conclusion. The ISM Code makes no mention of any requirements for even sailing on ships. The great majority of audits of navigation are restricted to in-port only and solely rely on records. Ship's officers may not be accurately recording what is happening, which might bias the audit findings, even if they are not intending to conceal incomplete checks.
Focal Shipping has the expertise and resources to help responsible operators meet the level of navigation requirements to keep their ships and crew safe at sea. Independent Navigation audits or marine cargo inspection services in Fujairah must therefore be a part of a ship owners/managers risk assessment modality. Few people realize that navigation is a human activity and that it is in the Human Element category. One issue with audits is that the greatest outcome a ship's Master and crew can hope for is a score; as a result, a more comprehensive approach to the audits is needed, one that encourages the ship's Master and officers to feel confident in their own navigation.
A more effective principle to follow would be "far better a willing volunteer than a conscript," in addition to the practice of filling out the standard accepted checklist. To that aim, we believe that any flaws should be pointed out, the individuals and group (Bridge Team) should be informed of what is wrong and why it is incorrect, and they should then be given the opportunity to implement new procedures. "Non-Conformities" with policies or procedures would be submitted to the firm for investigation. Onboard, deviations from the established shipboard procedures would be noted and the master and officers would be given the chance to make the necessary corrections during marine cargo inspection services in Fujairah.
As a result of our experience, we now know that bottom-up improvement is more effective than top-down change. Many police officers just haven't got the chance to see how things ought to be done correctly or are aware of how they ought to be done. There have been several initiatives throughout the years, both in terms of technological advancements and training. To help prevent collisions, we now have advanced radars, ARPAs, and AIS; for continuous position indication and monitoring, we have GPS and ECDIS. Even VDRs are available for recording what is happening.
Bridge Team Management training has been included, and on certain ships, sophisticated CBT as well. However, a large number of navigational mishaps occur as a consequence of failing to carry out fundamental navigational operations, such as keeping a "active" watch, plotting other boats, determining whether there is a risk of collision, and taking the necessary action in accordance with the COLREGs.
Focal Shipping is of the opinion that risk management and auditing may be utilized as tools to track and/or enhance both individual and team capabilities on the bridge. An audit or marine cargo inspection services in Fujairah conducted holistically rather than mechanically might also reveal improvements to current Safety Management Systems.

I've got some braw photies for you today from my week with SC&T Youth at Sunnybank School!
As I said in my post at the start of the week, the P6s were learning The Barnyards O Delgaty - quite the feat for those with non-Scots families, but they pronounced the Scots beautifully and I wis affa impressed wi their "knyot" in Meg MacPherson's brose!
I posted a link to clarsach tutor Irene singing the song earlier this week, but here's a link to Bothy Champion Joe Aitken's performance at the Keith TMSA Festival in 2021 - back when we were still aa daen festivals fae oor livingrooms!
The Barnyards O Delgaty is sung about 22 minutes into Joe's performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4yqCYp2O0U
The photo below is of my Dad's Uncle Willie - taken around 1920. I wanted to show the bairns what ploughing horses looked like, all yokit up. (Uncle Willie is clearly spruced up for this photo, wi his pocket watch and everything!)
The drawings are from a rather talented P6! First she drew one of Uncle Willie's horses - long after the photo had been taken down off the board! And then she drew me and our cat Apollo
(Apollo is looking mean because he clawed my arm in a moment of "I love you - I love attacking you!" leaving me with a rather obvious scratch, hehe )
I love when these visits inspire the kids in so many different ways

The Mad Scientist's Assistant - Chp 29 PREVIEW
Full TMSA masterlist
“Stop these games!”
“Where are the guards?!”
Voices grow louder and more desperate, drowning out each other. You take a step back, overwhelmed by the booming voices as they echo in the large chamber. Eyes darting to Silco for guidance, all you see is a snarl on his lips and disgust in his abyss eye, a slight wrinkle to his nose like he’s smelled something foul. He turns to his daughter before giving her the briefest of nods.
You can see the whites of Jinx’s teeth as her face splits into a large grin before unleashing a stream of fire into the empty space next to the table, the entire chamber filled with brilliant orange light. You can feel its warmth on your skin despite your distance from it, your nose twitching at the smell of gas, your ears filled with the sound of the almost animalistic roar of the flame. Jinx makes no effort to hide her glee, her laughter cackling alongside the eruption of fire that bursts from the flamethrower which has been painted to look like a legendary dragon, its mouth open wide as it shoots a steady volcanic stream of light.
And then, just as quickly as it came, the fire is extinguished.
Silence.
The councilors freeze in place.
“That’s better,” Silco hums.

adopting a critical realist perspective in mathematics teaching and learning
the different backgrounds of the teacher (e.g., education and instructional quality), the student themselves (e.g., beliefs, attitudes, knowledge and foundations, economic background), and the university and the greater social context (e.g., public, or private; delivery modes; assessment and grading schemes) affect the learning of the students as well as their interplay as part of the social reality. in the same vein, the teaching practices are also influenced by this same interdependence and interconnectedness. as a social reality, we can view this phenomenon in the lens of critical realism.
critical realism (cr) distinguishes between the real and the observable, and advocates for a critical social science that describes, explains, and judges reality. it presents epistemological beliefs about reality, knowledge, and justifying the process of knowing. it also posits several features that make (social) scientific investigation possible and intelligible.
nowadays, many students in basic and higher education underperform in calculus and other mathematics subjects and courses. this reality transcends the changing circumstances, situations, and points of view of teachers and of students alike or any researcher’s own perspective. independence from observer’s perception exhibits the cr concept of ontological realism – the intransitivity of reality. associated with ontological realism is epistemic relativism, the transitivity of knowledge. in this context, the body of knowledge about mathematics teaching and learning is tentative highly depends on the context and the current environment of the study and in need of constant evaluation and reevaluation. these two concepts together justify judgmental rationality as it is sufficient and necessary for assessing different claims about the world.
two other concepts proposed by cr are the stratification of reality that distinguishes empirical experiences, actual events, and real causes in the world and the open system where causes do not necessitate future events but only provide tendencies. if the world were not stratified, that is, the three domains of reality would all be the same and causes are just the events and experiences, resulting in a positivist view. if it were true and that the students’ underperformance in calculus courses is a closed system, this phenomenon was only caused by their habits throughout the course of the semester or grading period and nothing more. this is entirely a naïve conclusion, disregarding any external influences on the event and other internal factors the student may not be aware of and thus failed to address, or that it could be a teacher factor, or a confluence of the classroom dynamics, policies that were implemented, and the external environment.
the literature clearly shows several factors affecting a student’s mathematics learning but not one reason justifies the event or the phenomenon. the student's performance and learning of calculus emerges from, say, their basic education, the learning interventions they have, their economic status, the amount of their free time, and others but these factors in isolation do not entirely explain the situation. the interventions teachers employ in their delivery of the course and the study interventions students try also affect the learning of calculus. the event is affected by the interdependence of these plausible causes. this cr concept of emergence is best summarized into the aristotelian adage of “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” the greater context of the contemporary times influences the overall phenomenon.
the transformational model of social activity (tmsa) encapsulates all the ideas of cr. the interrelationships of the philippine education system and a university existing policies on delivery and assessment modes (structure); the teachers, students, administrators, officers in governing bodies, and even politicians (agents); and the country’s, universities’, or localities’ beliefs and history all affect not only the challenges and barriers to learning calculus, but also possible, applicable, and implementable interventions to mitigate them. the structure, agents, and culture are distinct but not independent of one another; they depend on and influence one another, too.

Can Navigation Audit be considered as a best practice for vessels?
Yes, in-fact OCIMF TMSA 3 requires Navigation Audits to be conducted as a Best Practice. Operators themselves ensure that Navigation function is given due care due to its critical role in safe operation of vessels and hence mandates such practices.
