i played through chants of sennaar (and then started another playthrough but this time i'm taking actual notes of all the words bc hhhhh languages am i right) and now i keep thinking abt the devotee language specifically and like. how other words could be formed.

would a pen be a tool with which you make letters the way an instrument is a tool with which you make music? would a book be a thing by itself or would it be a knowledge tool? would an alchemist be a potion person? what would the word for water be and would a water tool then be a glass or rather a watering can? would an elevator be a tool that goes up? is the word for go based on the word for feet or legs and would the word for shoes or pants be that plus tool? would they differentiate btwn children and adults and if so would that be based on the words for small/big or the words for young/old? assuming there is a word for knowledge by itself would the verb form of that mean to teach or to study? and would it in combination with person mean a teacher or a student? or maybe they wouldnt differentiate btwn those? does the part of warrior that makes it be read as warrior mean danger or rather something like fight as a noun? would it combine with tool to mean weapon? would a murderer be a death person? how if at all would they differentiate btwn a liked/loved person being a friend vs being a lover? could a repetition of the sign for like/love maybe signify romantic love the way that repetition of other words signifies plural? would a bed be a tool for sleeping or a place where you sleep? and if it would be a place then what would a bedroom be called? can you combine words that have already been combined to signify a certain word with other words? for example could you combine the potential word for weapon as a fighting tool with the sign for place to mean armory? or could you combine book as a knowledge tool with place to mean library? or is that something you wouldnt be able to do? would a laboratory be a potion place? how would they refer to the anchorites?

am i the only one who feels like a lot of Taylor's vocal show-off moments (honestly all just her belting the lyrics) sound rather strained and are barely off her simply yelling? No doubt she can sing, but sometimes I see a video on my dash that has people hyping up her vocal performance and it is not all that impressive... But I don't know if I simply am a hater, generally not always impressed by belting (which is not the end all be all of vocal performances), or if others feel this way too.

I feels the same in the sense that while I enjoy when she sings a certain way that’s emotional or evocative of something, I’m never impressed by her vocals in the way that I think they’re extraordinary in talent or skill. I don’t think most of the (sane) Swifties would say she’s an extraordinary vocalist in the typical sense either. They are likely impressed by what she’s showing she’s capable of compared to her average vocal stylings, but not compared to her peers. The main thing that has historically been associated with the great vocalists of the modern age has been range, which Taylor has little of. She’s no Beyoncé or Ariana Grande or lady Gaga or Adele in terms of range and power, the kind of singers who are true natural talents, that’s for sure. But I’d say that’s not the only kind of vocal style there is, and never has been the only style.

Within different vocal styles, other artists can find their sound and figure out how to employ their voice in ways that may not be traditional, but are equally as effective and pleasant to hear. You can look at people like Phoebe and Billie who have a sound that’s soft and gritty at the same time, very emotionally evocative and delicate, that conveys the intimacy and melancholy they’re aiming for. Lana had a very limited range but within it she has almost a free form way of crooning that she distorts with echos and such to create a larger sounding atmosphere and voice than she has, and it suits the satirical motifs she is playing with. Doja is another, who is actively not trying to even sing in the classic way we’d call “pretty” but rather is playing fast and loose with her voice to emote heavily, mock, and even sing what you could call musical jokes by singing in whacky characters. There are soooo many others in this day and age who have carved out their own style!

For Taylor, I’d say her voice is definitely stronger and more defined than it used to be, and her lower register has grown as she aged. But it’s still a very limited range and she has very limited vocal acrobatics compared to others who can riff, make seamless jumps between low and high notes, etc etc. I’d say she knows this and has the great fortune of writing her own songs herself, so she writes for her abilities and has created a style for herself that she’s comfortable in. She can highlight her strengths, like her ability to emote, and stay in the ranges she sounds strongest, and so on. Sometimes she pushes up against the the boundaries of her range, and as far as I can tell she hits the notes fine, but they are at the very edges of her ability. That’s where the strain comes from that you’re probably hearing, and sometimes I hear it too. It doesn’t bother me as much, but that’s totally fair if it bothers you! Her belt is closer to a yell, I agree, but that’s also her style. She’s turned it into her style at least, the same way rock musicians have done their yell-singing in the past you could say. And that’s been an acceptable and enjoyable way to hear rock musicians sing for decades now, it’s just less common in pop. But it’s not always a style that works for everyone, for sure. It’s more of a strategic way of singing than any kind of extraordinary natural vocal talent, but being able to develop this strategic singing style is a talent in and of itself you could say.

Personally, as much as I love the voice Taylor has and the comfort it brings, I don’t come to Taylor for her wide ranging vocal stylings. I’d say her concerts are more sing-a-longs than going to hear her voice sing live, which is entertaining in how she uses it theatrically but not exactly impressive insofar as the range and power I talked about before. I can compare it to a recent Beyoncé concert i went to where the crowd was relatively quiet as Beyoncé sang because her voice is truly incredible to behold, like it just fills the space and the air and takes a hold of you like nothing else. You are there to witness and hear the incredible range and control that she has over her natural and refined talent. Both very entertaining shows and artists that offer totally different things for different people, but both of them using their voices to their desired effects and ultimately to achieve the same ends: both of them playing the exact same stadiums to sold out crowds who leave immensely satisfied.

honestly the worst thing abt this tho is that as much as i am attached to that worldstate i KNOW i cannot use it in da4 because ive just. wriggled my claws in so deep and for inqusition especially there is sooo much i've changed bc the writing in inquisition drives me BONKERS. so like. i just know whatever they say in da4 i am probably just inherently going to hate, so i NEED to work on a new worldstate (and i am actively attempting to) but ..... guh. effort.

That would have given him enough time to think of an excuse. But this? Apollo staring at him with those big ol' eyes? Klavier didn't have a chance. He would just have to wing it.

Ah. That was… mean. Klavier almost asked for a do-over (how could his thoughts think that this was the right choice?), but Apollo didn't give him that chance.

"Hold on." Apollo's eyebrows knotted together indignantly. A terrifying sense of impending doom lingered in the air. Klavier was going to get his just desserts, and Apollo would get sweet revenge served cold, or whatever.

"I don't dress like this all the time. They're just my work clothes." Apollo snorted. "What, did you think I sleep in these?"

legundo's charts have minimal and very readable mods but their stepwork is more technical and difficult. brackets (hitting two adjacent notes with one foot on the corner) and laterals (i don't know how to explain laterals i'm sorry) and difficult patterns and the like. he also does driven drops a lot (notes losing color optional, someone else gets that one)

sneve is a mawaru or a random box -- he throws gimmicks (from other non-rhythm games) at you, Good Luck. The Heck is a really good non-mawaru chart for him though

viking's charts are . we gave him a lot of gimmicks he's a little nightmarish. probably a multi-chart boss character. sugarkill/receptor scrambling, a variant of the note obscuring from private eye (instead of it hiding one player's colors, it hides a specific color/rhythm of note), switching playfield vision (and also whatever you call this gimmick in super reactor), switching playfield vision again: peeesh edition, and weird receptor rotation. viking in general is just "better keep track of your notes buddy" (he also gets some haunted houses but i. don't fully understand what those are i just know he needs to have them because He Is A Ghost)

shadowmech is Good Luck Chunking, Asshole in specifically the screen damage way. he gets fafnir's screen slash and the screen damage from destroy. throws notes directly at your face

taneesha gets these petal effects as snow, but her main thing is clear notes/colorless notes.

mongo gets screen distortion along the lines of an "underwater" shader alongside having some simple dpads

grady gets portals and/or a rapidly moving playfield, alongside having a lot of meaner d-pads! (flashing warning on that last link, the flicker effect is busted on youtube)

jamie scrungles your notes with funky shaders and does proxy marches! she also gets daikyi wheels because they are (direct quote from leo) "emotionally similar to a Horrible D-Pad"

jamie and grady also have a couples chart. 🅱️.... TWO! (apologies for linking to a really long video/commentated upload in this one. i was unable to find literally any other upload of び)

nukeri gets proxy walls and a judgement line gimmick. basically a nicer version of this bit from golden rule. he also gets a more consistent version of the ending of hymn which is a bit hard to describe. notes in the background. notes AS the background.

joy also gets proxy walls but hers are a little bit more... scooty. a lot of scrolling and movement from them, basically

josh gets teal notes, a sentence that means nothing to most people and strikes fear into the hearts of a select few (teal notes are on odd beats, 64ths or rhythmless). his mods/shaders aren't that bad though, to make up for it

kiply is just ayaze. she's just ayaze. that does mean she has overlap with sneve but it's different because source dude just trust me (jokes aside, the difference is kiply is "forces you to read other rhythm game formats" and sneve is "forces you to do a silly little minigame or fifteen")

red hits you in the face with notes a lot at a very high bpm (HUGE FLASHING WARNING FOR THIS ONE BTW. THIS IS THE MAIN REASON THAT WARNING IS UP THERE) she's not evil though she's just got the zoomies. she also does footswitches (hitting the same note with alternating feet) and jacks (hitting the same note a bunch in a row) because again: zoomies

fixxitt has been saved for the end of this post because fix is our 19. fix is an absolute nightmare. earlier fix charts have switches from standard reading to unorthodox playfields. later fix charts have, um. so imagine the SHAME cube. but multiple shapes onscreen at once. and only one of the cubes is showing the correct playfield.

finally: we don't have much for ryan or brock because neither of us really have the Vibes yet, but brock could have this bouncy bit from JUGGLE on account of. slimes bounce.
