Lemon's Misadventures in Dating, Chapter 3 (Lemon x Everyone)Ā - Mermelada
A/N Hi everyone, Iā€™ve been sitting on this chapter for a wee while but couldnā€™t quite get it right, so I hope this will do! Lots of love to you all!
As soon as Lemon had arrived home after her date with Kyne ā€“ at 9 oā€™clock the following morning ā€“ she flopped onto her bed and checked her phone. She opened the app to be greeted with a number of new messages.
[08:48] Hope you got home safe baby, please try not to fall in love with me now xx
The first one she read, from Kyne, made her chuckle, sheā€™d actually had a really, REALLY good time last night. It turned out that there was actually a very easy way to get the girl to stop talking. Kyne had every reason to be cocky, and Lemon hadnā€™t been made to feel so good for a very long time. She had even managed to go a couple of hours without thinking of her. Speaking of her, they still hadnā€™t matched, which was definitely for the best, as Lemon didnā€™t think she could stand the inescapable mutual awkwardness if they did. But then did that mean that Juice had swiped left on her? Deciding to stop the mental tennis before it got out of hand, she pulled up the bottom message on her list, from yesterday.
[16:04] Bonjour hi, Miss Lemon! Tu parles franƧais? Or am I needing to practice my English? :-)Ā
Rita. From her profile, she looked every bit the no-shit-taking dom top with a major mommyā€™s little girl kink, but her message was kind of sweet. The fact she had even bothered to check what language Lemon spoke was cute, she supposed, but she crossed her fingers that Rita had an edge and wasnā€™t all politeness and niceties. Now that Lemon had had her first taste of Tinder hook-ups, she was ready to dive in with no fear. Well maybe just a tiny bit of fear. She quickly typed out a reply, partly assisted by the internet, and sent it off.
[09:09]Ā Iā€™m assuming you donā€™t count ā€˜voulez-vous coucher avec moiā€™ as proper French šŸ˜‰
Is it completely clichĆ© and unoriginal? Yes. Has Rita probably already received hundreds of messages saying the same thing? Yes. But Iā€™m tired and still feeling fucked out, so itā€™ll do. If she likes me, sheā€™ll bite. Hopefully for real, soonā€¦
Following on, she finally had a reply from Kiara.
[19:20] Hi girlie! I am SO sorry for replying so late, I have been working all day and all night this week ā˜¹ļø but seeing your profile made me feel better šŸ™‚ how are you??
Double-checking quickly in case sheā€™d missed something important, she realised that the girlā€™s profile didnā€™t say what she did as a job, so that seemed like a good place to start.
[09:13] Donā€™t worry at all, hon! But Iā€™m glad I can help šŸ˜‰ Iā€™m doing okay thanks, and u? What do you do for work? x
Is a kiss on the end too forward or too friendly, she pondered, trying to remember if sheā€™d done the same for Rita and Kyne before her. Itā€™s done now, Iā€™ll soon find out, I guess!
[23:56] Youā€™re named after the wrong fruit, because youā€™re definitely a fineapple
The third message was from Boa, who she must have matched with during the night. She loved it. She wanted it on a cross-stitch, framed above her bed. Sheā€™d definitely made the right choice with this girl. Now, how to match her at her own gameā€¦Ā
[09:15] You udderly impressed me with that one!
As soon as it had sent, Lemon was hit with a massive wave of self-doubt: what if Boa didnā€™t get the pun and just thought she was weird? Sheā€™d always thought she was quite funny, but what if that was all a lie? There was still time to rectify it.
[09:15] Because of the cow costume, get it?
[09:15] Itā€™s so cute!!!
[09:16] You seem really fun šŸ˜€
[09:16] And it helps that your hot
[09:16] Youā€™re^Ā
Shit shit shitting shit, that is way overboard for a reply. What the fuck have I done? Oh dear lord, well Boa, it was nice knowing ya! I donā€™t blame you for blocking me and running to the hills!
Some more general swiping ensued as Lemon awaited some replies, she started aimlessly swiping again through the single ladies of Ontario.
Scarlett, 29
Within 10 miles
Hmm, she looks like she has a bit of filler in those lips but she still looks hot, I like her tattoos, and HOLY SHIT SHEā€™S EATING FIRE fuck yeah, okay Scarlett! Iā€™ll take that!
Ilona, 25
Within 10 miles
Okay I love her make-up, I love her styleā€¦ all her photos are selfies, does that mean she has no friends? Donā€™t be silly, Lem, my camera roll is full of selfies and Iā€™m just fine. I think. Hey, Ilona!
Starzy, 38
Within 10 miles
Oh wow, sheā€™s hot. Her bio literally says, ā€œCall me motherā€. That has to be the hottest thing I have ever read, yes please!
After a few more likes and dislikes, Kiaraā€™s name lit up at the top of her screen. Not wanting to seem too keen, she waited a monumental thirty seconds before checking the message.
[09:22] I work on a movie set, but nothing glamorous, I help with hair and makeup. It pays my rent šŸ™‚ I am pretty tired today but I have a deadline soon so I have to keep writing ā˜¹ļø where do you work? x
Just as she was thinking of the best way to word her current, work-less situation, a reply also came in from Rita, which Lemon accidentally clicked on sooner than she meant to, completely blowing her cool faƧade.
[09:25] Iā€™ve never heard that one beforeā€¦
Lemonā€™s heart sank at the thought of her impending rejection, but a new message arrived seconds later.
[09:25]Ā At least look up how to say it less formally, Iā€™m not that old!!!!
Smiling at the thought of Rita not automatically hating her ā€“ not outright rejecting her ā€“ Lemon started to type a reply, but stopped when a third message appeared.
[09:26] Mais si je dis oui, es-tu vraiment libre ce soir? ;-)
Somehow, the more Lemon stared at the words, the less sense they made. She now severely regretted passing her time in French class admiring Madame Benetā€™s assortment of leopard-print clothing, rather than actually learning. But there was a winky face at the end, which made her heart race, even without understanding the rest of it. Highlighting the text and taking it straight to Google, she couldnā€™t help but bite her lip as she got Ritaā€™s point.
[09:30] Wee wee, madame šŸ’› give me a place and a time xx
As much as she may have been looking forward to a good nightā€™s sleep tonight, she still felt the swarm of butterflies flap around her tummy at the thought of Ritaā€™s hands on her, telling her she was a good girlā€¦ Donā€™t get carried away yet, dummy, save it for tonight! I need a cold shower if Iā€™m going to survive the next few hours. Before jumping into action mode, though, the first thing Lemon needed was a nap.
Rousing awake a few hours later, she padded downstairs to make herself a sandwich and a tea, continuously checking her phone with the hope tha Rita had replied. Met with silence, she then took her time to shower, deep conditioning her golden blonde hair and shaving everywhere she could, so she could at least feel better prepared than she had yesterday. Not that a grown-up adult lady like Rita would mind, of course, but itā€™s all part of getting in the zone, Lemon hummed to herself as she let the water wash away any anxiety she might have had about tonight.Ā
She already knew what underwear she would wear: her favourite black bra with a light furry trim around the cup, and a lacy black thong. She was so sure that Rita was on the same page about how the night would end, she felt like she didnā€™t have to worry too much about what went over it, opting for indigo skinny jeans and a beige polo-neck. By the time she had finished her makeup, it was almost 5pm, and she still didnā€™t know the plan. Sitting up on her bed, contemplating how she would explain to her parents that she was spending the night out again, she once again opened the app, hoping that Rita hadnā€™t backed down. With still no reply, she couldnā€™t help the frustration which bubbled inside her, she didnā€™t spend so long stretching to shave the backs of her thighs for nothing! Even more discouraging was the lack of reply from Kiaraā€¦ until she looked at the last message sent, and realised that sheā€™d unwittingly left the poor girl on read.
Shit, I thought Iā€™d replied already! That explains itā€¦ now how to explain that Iā€™m a dancer who doesnā€™t dance anymore and has moved back in with my parents with no ambition to find anything else anytime soon?
[16:58] Youā€™re a busy lady! What do you study? šŸ˜Š
[16:59] Iā€™m a dancer, currently hopping from audition to audition, hoping somebody likes me enough!
The reality was that Lemon hadnā€™t attended any auditions for over a month. She had tried to throw herself into her work after the break-up, but had soon realised that with a broken heart came an enormous lack of drive. She told the contemporary company she was a member of that she needed a break, and they told her to not bother coming back. So here she was, hoping that one day sheā€™d once again wake up with a flame inside of her. Luckily, Kiara didnā€™t push her to expand on anything just yet.
[17:04] So a bit like Tinder then! Donā€™t worry, Iā€™m sure lots of people will like you enoughā€¦ in dance and Tinder!
[17:05] I study film and theatre, itā€™s fun šŸ™‚ but a lot of essays to write in English which takes me forever lol
[17:06] That makes me sound like an idiot!! I promise Iā€™m not, just QuĆ©bĆ©quoise!!Ā
[17:06] Are you from Toronto? šŸ™‚
Well at least if tonight doesnā€™t go ahead, Iā€™ve still got a French option for the future, she sighed, running her fingers through her hair as she thought of an answer.Ā
[17:08] Haha, I believe you šŸ˜‰ my dad is from Portugal, but I think there are 2 year olds who speak better Portuguese than I do šŸ„ŗĀ
[17:08] That sounds super interesting! Your job on the side must help a bit then?
[17:08] And I am, Toronto gal born and bred! How long have you lived here?
Just as she was about to put her phone down for the evening and fall into another nap, the message sheā€™d been waiting for finally arrived, and Lemon found herself scrambling to read it.
[17:09] Sorry, lovely Lemon, work was kicking my ass all day. Does Madoā€™s at 8pm work for you? X
Lemon couldnā€™t resist one final reply, cementing her intentions.
[17:10] Sounds great, Iā€™m sure I can help that ass feel better šŸ˜˜ see you soon!! šŸ’›šŸ’›
A/N Itā€™s me again, your friendly neighbourhood translator!
ā€œVoulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?ā€ - Do you want to sleep with me tonight?
ā€œMais si je dis oui, es-tu vraiment libre ce soir?ā€ - But if I say yes, are you really free tonight?

first post!
after fucking around with the editing of custom themes that was made ever so difficult by the tumblr theme, i think im finally done setting up my blog and its theme! i might try to mess around with the html a bit to insert a pic in the header or smth eventually or change the background, but ive been fighting with this website for like an hour and a half now and i amĀ  t i r e d.
who are u!
iā€™m camille! im 19, an aries and a white queer cis girl (she/her). i have a boyfriend that i luv very dearly and iā€™m from quĆ©bec! my university is in ontario and itā€™s bilingual, as am i (my first language is french, and yes, i do have the french canadian accent, if youā€™re wondering). i am double majoring art and art history and i love it a lot! iā€™d love to specialize myself in english medieval history, especially in the fields of christian iconography and hagiography.
so, what is this blog?
this blog will be used to document my student exchange in london and the trip to the uk i will make preceeding that exchange. iā€™ll also document a bit of the process of applying for the exchange, bc it is quite a long one indeed!!!! iā€™ve been working on it since last semester and it honestly took a lot more time than i expected, especially because i have to make a preliminary schedule and some uni websites are especially hard to navigate. i might also talk about the planning thatā€™ll go into the trip my boyfriend and i want to have before my semester.
what am i gonna do?
-travel across the uk with my boyfriend
-then study during the fall semester of 2019 in london in history
whatā€™s the plan?
basically, i have quite a bit of money put aside for the trip and the exchange. i will continue to work this summer (im already pretty much guaranteed to have one, but itā€™s a haunted walk tour guide job and, although my hourly salary is quite good, i have very few hours; ill have to find another job if the one i have at the moment is only seasonal). then, in early august, my boyfriend and i will leave canada together and travel all across the uk. i have already traveled with him to his homecity (manchester, uk) and it was absolutely lovely! weā€™ll spend around a month/a month and a half traveling together and iā€™m pretty sure itā€™ll go extremely well, as our last trip did. we traveled pretty early on in our relationship, so i feel like after around 2 years and a half of dating, this trip will be even better than the first!
after the trip, my boyfriend will go see his family in manchester and go back home to canada. i, on the other hand, will be staying in europe. the university i will attend for the semester is the queen mary university of london. the semester there starts on september 16th, so idk if thereā€™ll be some introductory activities or when i can start living on campus. i might just travel on my own or go see some family friends in france if i have to wait around. all i know is that itā€™ll be quite lonely. then, iā€™ll go back to london and try my best to have a great semester.
obstacles
there are a few obstacles that iā€™ll have to face to first of all be accepted but also to live there. first, there is the language barrier, which i dont think should be too much of an issue but??? who knows???
my first language is french and the accent in english that im used to is like the most basic, neutral, slightly canadian accent. anyone who deviates from that, i might have a hard time understanding. also, handing in essays in english is a bit scary. ive done it before, as my university is bilingual and i attend french and english classes, but it still makes my work a bit longer to do and my english doesnt have the same quality as my french. it also makes the process longer since i have to write my motivation letter in the language of the university ill be attending (so english) and i have to PROVE that i can speak/understand/write english....i mean i get the incentive but also....anyway, i can just basically show ive had more than a B+ in a class in english and it counts as a proof. good thing 3/5 of my classes were only available in english i guess.
also, my university does exchange programs in a way that you have three choices of university and depending on your gpa and your motivation letter, they give you either your first, second or third choice. my three choices are:
-queen mary university of london
-royal holloway university of london
-reading university
of course, reading was a filler. i would have wanted to put manchester as a choice instead, but the choice wasnt available for my program. i have a pretty high gpa (so far i have 3 A+ and 1 A, waiting for my last grade) and im trying to writing the best motivation letter that i can. ill have to upkeep my gpa to be able to participate in the exchange so fingers crossed???
where are you now in the process?
not many things are left for me to do for the application, and thatā€™s perfect because i have until the 22nd to send in my finished application form (and we are the 9th, and my term has started). there are other things to take care off AFTER the application (like some meetings and obviously doing my schedule and booking my dorm room) but im not there mentally now,,, its a bit discourageing when i know how much work ill have during the term lmao.
so NOW what i have left is:
-receiving my last grade from last semester so i can enter my gpa and a copy of my gradesā€™ summary
-take a picture of myself in front of a white background (lowkey waiting to get a haircut for that)
-i had to prepare schedules for each school with like what classes id be attending. i have to get approved my first school choice by my ā€œdepartment counsellorā€. that was very unclear so i basically sent a message to two people + my department so like dĆ©merdez-vous lmao. when i get the schedule approved, iā€™m pretty much gucci!
-also my bf and i have to figure out the whole trip, but weā€™ll prolly start planning in april, after finals and when we have most of the money we want/know what kind of income weā€™ll be making this summer
-finally, ill miss everyone, especially my boyfriend...itll feel a bit lonely so i rly wanna keep busy so i dnt get too mopey. i always told myself i wouldnt stop myself from going away even if i had a significant other and i wanna stay true to that but it doesnā€™t mean it wont hurt...i know weā€™ll last for very long tho so this is just a few months out of many many more and we can withstand it for sure!
so that was a rly big post!!! had fun writing this and im excited to see whatā€™ll happen! i should know if iā€™m approved in around march, so iā€™ll probably not update this blog a lot until then... canā€™t wait to be able to update it with lotsa good news, hopefully!

Marx
Reading Marx is like going on a hike in a forest that the even animals have deserted for the last hundred years. It is so overgrown you have to cut your own path through and as soon as you cut a clear path and understand what is going on, you have to concentrate on making a new path, so you forget all about the first path, then wind up constantly lost. That being said my writing now may be confusing for two different reasons; one being the above message and two being that I got my days all mixed up because of the snow day and now my notes look like crap.
Marx has a lot to say about labor. Well he has a lot to say about everything, but mostly labor and capital and how they tie into each other like some kind of super obnoxious crazy boy scout knot that goes on forever. I think Marx has me in a metaphor mood. Anyway, After weeding through everything I think he has a fairly good point for the most part. In Capital he talks a lot about how big businesses screw us over, or I suppose people back in the day over, but it seems the same thing is happening now so may as well update the terms. Big businesses make sure that we have just enough money to live so that we can go into work every day, and sometimes enough money to be able to buy the goods or services we make/provide to them for such a low wage cost. Then big businesses make a huge profit off of us and hoard the money and we go back to work again to start the process all over. Which is highly frustrating. As if we werenā€™t already pretty much aware of this already, in class we broke down just how fucked up it is, and let me tell you. The profit they make is rather insane. I mean we hate big business bad enough, because well, we signed up for a radical politics class, what else could we think about big business? But sheesh this is over the top.
But back to Marx, as he is talking about capital he relates everything to capital, which makes a lot of sense, except I keep thinking what is the point in all of this though? Okay maybe he is trying to wake us up as laborers? If we jump back to Alienated Labor real quick Marx mentions not only how laborers are getting ripped off, but about how everything relates to big business owners and capital. All there is in the world is the property owners and the property workers. He basically states that workers equal poop in this situation. Land ownsers get the benefits of working the property workers half to death and making a profit off them in the long run. Which I see as still being very true today, especially with part time workers. They donā€™t even get health benefits half the time, their hours are up and down all the time and business owners just see them as cheap fillers to replace full time employees anyway. I honestly wonder from both readings how a big business expects little workers to keep this up? Okay so I get paid an amount of wages, but I have to eat, have a place to live, have clothing and transportation. If i am paid not enough to afford those things then how does that big business expect me to buy their super expensive high profit product? If they get rid of all of the full time workers and hire cheaper workers who work less hours for way less pay, then how are those workers supposed to afford to buy their products? Because isn't it really technically the consumer that owns the market? Obviously according to Marx no, and he has every right to say no because we are still having the same problems, but if you really take a step back and think about it, the consumer should and did have the original power because they had the buying power. But now somehow we have become such desperate and needy consumers that we cannot live without certain luxuries that we gave the power back to corporations because we want our phones and electronics and easy access online products so much. .Not that I am at all saying I have bought into it any less than the next person. I have an iphone right next to me as Iā€™m typing away on my laptop thinking about ordering a pair of prescription sunglasses as soon as I get my tax return. But it is still something to think about. I guess what helps me sleep at night is that the sunglasses at least donate to charity from my purchase.
Honestly I read the Critique of Hegel but I got pretty much nothing out of it. This referencing back to the forest idea, where as soon as I have to concentrate on decoding one sentence, I absolutely forgot the last 8 I read three minutes ago. It was something about the political state vs the family and how they needed each other, and possibly how they were the same. There may have been something about there being a head of the state like there is a head of the family, or I could be molding that with a reading from my Anarchy class, which I now feel is highly likely. It was an interesting concept though. Even if it was massively gender roled with father ruling the house and children being taught to respect father like subjects are taught to respect the government head.
The Fragment on Machines got me a little confused with Capital because in Machines Marx mentions that everything has two values, a use value and a physical value. Then we turn around in Capital and he says that there is only value at all if a thing has use value, which I feel like is kind of untrue because gold is valuable but it does not really have a use. But then I realize that I suppose it can be made into things like jewelry and then technically it has a use. Then I go back again and think that technically jewelry doesnā€™t have a use, it just sits there, on your neck or finger to either be pretty or show that you have status, or belong to someone. What is the point in stuff like that anyway? I suppose one could argue a use for pretty much everything. Dirt is valuable because is is used to grow plants, but it does not have a physical value because you walk outside your house and there it is. But letā€™s not forget technically physical value is not a thing. Maybe I imagined that part too just to help the jumble of words Marx likes to use make sense. I could have been that desperate. Also Machines was a lot about labor and how machines were replacing people I think. And then he mentions that machines always have use value even if it is not for labor. This really confuses me because how is it useful if it is not for labor? I use my smartphone to look up information at the touch of a button in a hot second for me and I think that is labor and therefore use value. I donā€™t even see how a machine would be for anything other than labor. I mean a laptop can be used for entertainment but when it boils down to it, it is still intended really for labor. Laptops are used to do banking, writing emails, letters, essays. They do all kind of labor for us. What machines do not do labor? And how then are they useful?
