CHAPTER FIVE: plans

She’s sitting on the couch, back leaned up against the arm and legs kicked out over the cushions. Akaashi grabs each of her ankles, lifts them, and then sits. He places her legs back down on his lap once he’s there. “What are you watching?”

He keeps a hand placed over the skin of her ankle, and it makes heat creep up her neck.

“A documentary about the Romanov's,” she answers, picking at the skin of her lower lip, not looking back at him.

He hums. “Is it interesting?”

“What do you want, Keiji?” she asks, pausing the film in front of her.

Akaashi gives her this offended sort of look, like he’s unimpressed with her assumption. “What? I can’t ask about it?”

She raises an eyebrow. “You don’t give a shit about the Romanov's.”

“Yeah, but I give a shit about you,” he says, raising his hand just to bring it back down against her ankle.

Her heart twists oddly in her chest. There would’ve been a time where she would’ve basked in any praise given to her by Akaashi, gushed about it to a third party for days. But it’s just started to feel bitter, over time. It makes her uncomfortable, dissatisfied. It sits there in her chest and makes her squirm.

“What do you want?” she repeats to him.

Akaashi sighs, caught. “There’s a graduate reading night tonight. Alisa’s reading this passage from her series of short stories she’s working on about like, grief and generational strife through the stages of decomposition. It’s actually kind of brilliant.”

“Yeah, I know,” she says. “Alisa told me about it.”

He narrows her eyes at her. “She did?”

She’s become Alisa’s new pet, of sorts. Or at least, that’s how she likes to view it. Alisa would probably just call it a friendship. It consists of gleeful squeals and hugs of greeting, like Alisa is overjoyed every time she bumps into her on campus, random texts, and the promises of many, many lunch dates.

And it’s nice, in a way. It’s nice to get Alisa’s attention, to be on the receiving end of her affection. It’s also nice to feel like she has something that Akaashi doesn’t. 

“Yeah, she texts me all the time,” she answers. “She invited me to go the other day.”

Akaashi sits there, looking confused, like he couldn’t have possibly factored this into his scheme. Like it’s a wrench in his plans he can’t account for. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

She shrugs. “I dunno. We weren’t talking about you.”

“You mean she hasn’t brought me up once?”

“Nope.”

“Oh.”

Now, she doesn’t know what to say. She watches Akaashi. “Well, look, don’t take that the wrong way, okay? If she really liked you, it’s not like she’d bring it up to your supposed girlfriend all the time, anyways.”

Which, she figures would be true. If Alisa liked him. If it were even a possibility.

She feels bad lying to Akaashi. She feels bad lying to Alisa and Yukie and Kuroo and Bokuto and every single one of their friends that is under the impression that she and Akaashi are genuinely, truly in love. It makes her feel like something is worming around inside her, carving out her insides and leaving her hollow.

The only person she’s not lying to is Iwaizumi, who, after weeks of nonstop contact, won’t answer her texts. She thinks it’s some sort of karmic punishment.

“I guess so,” Akaashi relents, and then shakes his head. “Anyways, I was gonna ask if you wanted to go to the reading with me.”

“I’ll go,” she says, and then knocks her foot into his arm. “If you finish watching this documentary with me.”

Akaashi smiles. “Yeah, sure. Whatever you want.”

She’s glad the conversation ends there, so she can stop thinking about what a horrible person she is.

She stands at her window, leaning out of it, phone pressed to her ear. It’s out of character, for her to call. It doesn’t make any sense, and she knows that she shouldn’t. But she doesn’t like how it all feels out of her control, now.

She just wants him to talk to her, again.

“It’s Iwa. You missed me. Leave a message.”

She inhales, and the cold air that enters her lung cools her hot head. There’s a dial tone. “Hey,” she says into the receiver. “I’m sorry to call you, I know it’s insane. But I just hadn’t heard from you recently, and I dunno, I just wanted to make sure we’re good, y’know? I dunno. I miss you, in a weird way. You are important to me, even if I’m not really great at acting like it. I dunno. Call me back, if you want. If you don’t, that’s okay, too. Anyway, I’m sorry.”

She hangs up, and feels even worse.

Under the fluorescent lights of a university meeting room, Alisa stands behind a podium and reads. Her hands are shaking as the clutch to the paper, but her voice flows smoothly, clearly, confidently.

She’s sitting besides Akaashi, row four of fifteen, in an uncomfortable plastic folding chair that forces her posture to be straight.

Oddly, she feels transfixed, watching Alisa and listening to her words and falling into some sort of trance. Akaashi was right. It is sort of brilliant, the way Alisa can string together a sentence and make it sound like more than it is. How she can write something foreign and make it sound familiar. How her voice soothes you into compliance.

Her eyes water.

Akaashi reaches over and places a hand on her thigh.

He squeezes, and doesn’t let go.

She can feel it as the spell breaks. It snaps.

“It’s not working,” Akaashi says, forehead rested against his hand.

They’ve been in his car for five minutes, and they haven’t gotten anywhere. They’re still in the university parking lot, sitting right across from the liberal arts building, and she doesn’t say anything. The only right thing to say is the truth, so she can’t say anything at all.

“She hardly even looked at me,” Akaashi laments, and he’s correct.

After the reading, Alisa rushed over to her, gave her a hug, thanked her for coming. And then regarded Akaashi with a forced smile and a polite, ‘and you too, Akaashi,’ like he was an afterthought. Not ungrateful, not rude. He just wasn’t her priority.

It’s hard to deny.

“I dunno what to tell you, Keiji,” she says, and it’s true. She should tell him that it’s time to call it, take this opportunity to bow out gracefully and bring an end to it all. But she can’t. She just can’t make herself do it.

They sit in silence. That’s when Alisa appears, jacket zipped up to her chin and a hat pulled over her ears, standing directly across from them on an empty sidewalk, waiting for a ride.

She hopes Akaashi doesn’t notice her. But of course, he does. Akaashi wouldn’t ever not notice her.  

“Fuck,” he complains. “There she is.”

“Ask her if she wants a ride,” she suggests half-heartedly, shrugging. “Maybe she’ll think it’s considerate.”

Alisa sees her, then. She has a clear view from her spot on the sidewalk. She smiles brightly, and waves. And she can’t help but wave back.

“No,” Akaashi says. “Can I kiss you?”

She snaps her head in his direction. “What?”

He leans closer to her. “Just one kiss. I wanna see how she reacts, if it makes her jealous. If that doesn’t do it, then nothing will, and then we can give up.”

Her throat feels dry. “Are you sure you wanna do that?”

“It’s just a kiss,” he shrugs it off. “It’s not that big a deal to me, if it’s not to you.”

But it is. It is everything to her. She almost screams at the suggestion that he could just kiss her, and it would be nothing. That he could do something like that, and it wouldn’t completely ruin her.

She tells herself to say no. That it is the right thing to do, by her and by Akaashi. That saying no is her only option, and that she shouldn’t said no from the start, so really, this is the only way to make it right.

But, she always takes what she can get. She’s always going to say yes, when it comes to him.

She nods her head. “Fine.”

Akaashi is all she can see, his face illuminated by the dim, yellow streetlights as they sit in the front seats of his car. His eyes are wide with panic, hands slightly shaking with misdirected nerves. He’s staring straight at her, and it makes her feel small. “Is she still looking?”

There’s a stubborn strand of hair that falls in front of his forehead. She reaches out, and uses the tips of her fingers to brush it off to the side. “Yeah, she’s still looking,” she tells him, arm dropping back down to her side. She doesn’t have to look over her shoulder to confirm it. The other girl hasn’t once looked away this whole time; she can feel her stare follow her with every slight movement she makes.

“Should I do it?” Akaashi asks, leaning in towards her with the slight uptick of his words. “Now?”

“Yeah,” she confirms with a nod, “do it now.”

Akaashi nods, and flicks his eyes in her direction. She shakes her head, and reaches back for him, her thumb gently nudging his jaw back in her direction. “Don’t look at her,” she instructs. “You wouldn’t look at someone else before you kiss someone.”

If it were real, being the unsaid implication.

If it was real, the way he pretended to feel about her. If it was real when he held her hand and rested his head on her shoulder. If it was real, and he wasn’t in love with someone else, instead.

Akaashi nods, and his eyes are fixed onto hers, following her instruction almost too well. She has to swallow the lump in her throat as Akaashi leans into her, his hand slowly rising to cup the side of her face. And she knows that she agreed, she knows that she’s gone along with everything so far, but for the first time since it’s started, she’s filled to the brim with regret.

Because when Akaashi’s blue eyes flutter shut, and he tilts his head to make it fit against hers, it feels real. It all feels too real.

Akaashi kisses her, and it’s everything she thought it would be. He breathes new life into her from the second his lips hit hers, and she feels like every cell in her is hot, burning. And she has to tell herself, over and over, that it is fake. That it’s not real. That she can’t dig her fingers into his hair and mark his neck.

He’s not hers. He’s not hers.

She thinks about breaking away from him, but tells herself she’ll let him do it first. He can be the one to end it.

But Akaashi doesn’t let her go.

His tongue slips across her bottom lip. He tastes like fresh mint, and he is not letting her go.

His hand reaches up to cup the back of her neck, and he pulls her deeper into him. And she would give everything to know what he’s thinking when he leans in closer to her, ribs pressed against the center console of the car, arm reaching around her waist to get a better grip on her.  

Her head feels like it’s fried, and conscious thoughts are slowly slipping away. She tries to get a grip on them, wanting to be aware of where she is, and what exactly she’s doing. But Akaashi reaches a hand up to tangle in the roots of her hair, and he grabs a fistful of it, tugging at it lightly, and any hope of retaining a proper string of thoughts is gone.

Her body’s operating on desire now, moving in tandem with Akaashi’s, completely on its own.

His mouth is wet and warm, and her hands work their way up his chest, sliding back over his shoulders, looping around his neck. Akaashi lets out a sharp breath of air through his nose, and nibbles on her bottom lip.

A moan falls from her. Soft, and barely there. But it’s enough for Akaashi. He detangles his hand from her hair, and places each of them on either side of her hips, pulling her out of her seat and into his lap. His hands stay there, digging into her skin, holding her down.

Her mouth moves from his, to his jaw, leaving wet, sloppy kisses along the outline of it, and then down the side of his neck, teeth occasionally nipping at the skin. She reaches the crook of his neck, and Akaashi’s hands go to the buckle of her jeans.

She doesn’t stop him. She doesn’t stop him when he rips them open, and yanks down the zipper. She doesn’t stop him when he slips his hand inside, one finger drawing careful outlines on the outside of her underwear.

Instead, she kisses him again, moaning into his mouth.

She feels like an animal. She feels uncontrolled, and almost vile. She doesn’t know how she got there, or what the fuck Akaashi is thinking. But he touches her, and she doesn’t want it to stop.

But Akaashi pulls away, forehead leaned against hers, and against her lips, he asks, “Is she still watching?”

And her body goes cold.

Everything inside of her feels like it is collapsing  as she pushes off of him, his hand jerking away from her. She sits in the passenger seat with a screwed up expression, shaking hands trying her best to button her jeans back up.

“Wait,” Akaashi says, but she doesn’t look back up at him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”

But it doesn’t matter what he meant to do. She doesn’t care. She throws her jacket on haphazardly and throws the car door open. Akaashi calls her name, but she slams it behind her, and takes heavy, angry steps away from it, desperate to get away from the heat of the car as quickly as she can, not really caring what direction it is she’s heading it.

And Akaashi does not follow her.

Bigger oof.) Travis keeps sneaking bites out of an acai bowl or something and tries to look sneaky about it, and I laugh every time because he’s just...so big. He’s such a big person.

(Brian is wearing a lobstrosity shirt. He and Travis talk about Dark Tower for a bit; then Sam tries to get into the conversation: “Is that the thing from It?” Brian: “Is what the thing from It?” Sam: “Is that lobster the clown from It? I’m not very literate. Is that a Langolier? Is that a Shawshank?”)

Announcements: none! Maybe they just forgot. We’ve been talking about Sam’s spooky skeleton decorations for like five minutes. Brian suggests taking them to Travis’s house. Travis: “That’s the fastest way to get to the smell of burning plastic.” Brian: “Speaking of your girlfriend...”

On Avantika: Fjord wouldn’t call it a relationship as much as a casual sexual interaction. Not official! Super not official!!

The first sea voyage wasn’t great for Fjord, but he tried to be thoughtful about preparing for this one before they left: praying, kneeling at the bow of the ship, etc. He’s a little disappointed the Wildmother didn’t even throw him a “yo, fam” heads up.

They weren’t sure how to resolve the conflict at first, since Avantika went for Fjord rather than the crystal. No one expected it to get exposed in that way. Travis thought the necklace was a pocket dimension and was alarmed to learn it wasn’t. Travis wants it destroyed along with the third gateway, so until they are he won’t rest easy.

Everyone enjoyed watching them all fail on the battlefield again. (Sam: “You used [Counterspell] so effectively!”) Travis thought he’d said Thunder Step, which would imply Avantika was running, rather than Thunder Wave. Sam says it’s fine since none of them have that spell and he wouldn’t know it anyway.

It’s very difficult for Veth to find reasons to stay with the M9. She loves the adventures and making a difference, but she also wants to come home and have weekends and have a husband and life. “She’s a career girl!” He’s very excited about the possibilities of Caleb’s transportation effectively creating an easy commute for her. He also, as a player, doesn’t want to be the person who’s always leaving the party. “My characters wanna roam!”

Travis was fully tilted that Avantika might have gotten away right before the break. He doesn’t think he could have focused on Vess DeRogna’s task knowing Avantika had gotten away; he was seriously working out how Fjord would leave the party to go make a last stand at the third gate if she’d escaped.

Sam looooves how Matt plays Yeza, but it honestly makes him feel a little worse at how encouraging he is for Veth to chase her dreams. “He’s always like - go shine! Go blossom!” He wants to have the conversation about Yeza feeling a little ignored. It’s fun to share the tales of adventures with Luc & Yeza. 

Travis says there’s no way it’s Molly--it’s all Lucien. They don’t know if it was a resurrection, if he’s undead, possessed, etc. Everyone--everyone--rags on Taliesin’s accent work. Brian surreptitiously claims Ashly was brought on to relieve him of the burden of the accent. Poor Ashly, ha!

Initially, Travis landed on the Oath of the Ancients, but it had more nature & pacifism in it than he felt fit Fjord very well. Many of them also had a focus on good & lawfulness, which also didn’t feel quite right; he also wasn’t that vengeful for some of the others. He & Matt got together and discussed options. Matt asked what Travis liked about Fjord; Fjord’s love for the ocean was a huge part of it, since Travis himself also loves the ocean & scuba diving, and so Matt created a custom oath for him. Travis does not plan to post its details, but he thinks Matt will at some point.

Cosplay of the Week! a lovely Scanlan by Air Bubbles Cosplay! Sam tells us the “canon” Scanlan cosplay was actually borrowed hodgepodge, and the boots were falling off all day.

It was really cool to see how Yeza & Luc have made a home in Nicodranas. Felderwin was okay, but kind of your basic D&D fishing village, and she likes the Nicodranas is much better. She’s confident & comfortable knowing her family is safe and sound.

Why is Fjord so interested in finding Sabian? To him, post-orphanage, his time with Vandren was the best of his life & the most love he’d ever received, because he mattered & had worth. It was taken by someone he’d known basically his whole life, so Fjord is not going to let that go. “That fuckin’ bill needs to be paid, my friend.”

Sam acknowledges that he should NOT have looked at his phone in re: the Vilya reveal, but it was pretty surprising! He can’t believe none of them recognized it! Travis points out the M9 had never met, heard of, or known anything about Vilya, so it’s not that surprising. Brian points out Matt has also done a really good job keeping the two campaigns separate, so any references were tasteful. Sam marvels that it was so well done: it was tasteful, had emotional and story impact... “That Matt. He’s getting better!”

Liam texted Sam back something like “oh SHIT.”

Knowing Veth had a chance to help someone else return to her child made Veth feel almost karmically forgiven for being away from her kid, but it also made Veth a little guilty--”this lady wants to desperately return home, shouldn’t I want to go home too?” Caleb’s teleportation spell couldn’t have come a better time.

Sam wants Caleb & Astrid to get back together (well, he says “hump each other”), and Dani’s eyebrows climb off her forehead. Veth/Nott really thinks Caleb needs to have a roll in ze hay, and feels like after meeting her that there is a kindness or vulnerability to her that could be worthwhile. Travis thinks she feels like someone tethered, that it feels like she has a bomb or something in her chest that’ll explode if she tries to leave. Sam thinks Eadwulf is super cool. None of these names are spelled like I think.

Travis found the dinner super frustrating, because he felt Caleb was trying to walk a diplomatic line and he just wanted to backhand Trent. 

Fjord is still coming to terms with his feelings for Jester, and the feelings are definitely real, but there’s a lot of timing that he’s considering and he also wants to figure out what the relationship is like outside of constant tension and battle. Fjord is also having trouble figuring out how to exercise the ability to display affection as well since he’s never received them, and is feeling out how to give and receive them. “It’s fine now, because he’s feeling it, but once you say it out loud, or once you come to a point where you make it known to the other side, then what happens? It might be ruined. It might be broken. Or it might not be!” The moment with the porcelain unicorn was too good not to try. Travis also sighs that he’s not a romance D&D guy, “but now I am! Fuckin’ Laura Bailey!” He’s definitely feeling it out and will see how it unfolds in the game.

If Jester hadn’t let go of the Traveler, Fjord would have either attacked the Traveler or the Moonweaver and tried to kick them both off.

Sam doesn’t think the Traveler’s realized yet what a dick he is. Brian thinks it may not happen in this campaign, but agrees the full weight of what he deserves hasn’t been felt yet. Travis: “Yeah, he came to the edge, but it didn’t cost him anything.” Brian: “Yeah, he’s a real edgelord.”

Veth acknowledges that they work for shady people with shady pasts, so Vess DeRogna isn’t her first rodeo, but this time it’s personal. It’s Jaws 2: Electric Boogaloo. Sam can’t commit to actual actions, since Vess is like level 20 or something, but “I will get some kinda revenge. Be it petty or significant, I will get revenge.”

How are they feeling about being in Eiselcross? They’ve only just landed, so not sure yet. The cold is intimidating. They’re excited to explore a new island that’s part of Wildemount, especially with the river of lava running through it. “It’s icy with lava? Sounds like a Dairy Queen.”

There’s still a ton of unknowns regarding the Tombtakers, Vess, the nature of their job, and who’s here on whose orders. They’re excited to see how it’s all going to play out. Travis laughs that he doesn’t take notes, he’s just here to fight things. It just washes over him when Matt starts talking about names and places. “It’ll reveal itself in time. [...] I don’t write those notes down. I don’t even know how to spell it off the bat.” I have never identified more with Travis. Sam actually does pay attention and take notes and was really impressed by Marisha’s dive.

Veth became interested in branding her own spellcraft as soon as she saw Caleb doing it. “That’s what the influencer agents are gonna be looking at. It would be nice to leave the world better than we found it, but also with some branded spells.”

What were Fjord’s thoughts on dropping so much money on the ring & the Ioun stone? It wasn’t about money for Fjord, it was about a cool thing to acquire. It’s why he saves money in his campaign. Caleb needs “as much of a flak jacket as he can get.” He also REJECTS the idea of buyer’s remorse on the ring and touts the effectiveness it’ll have on the lava river.

Travis talks about his old coins - a 340AD coin he bought at a ren faire and a 120BC coin that was a gift from a friend.

Sam marvels at the love and thought that Caleb put into the tower. Sam points out they forgot to go to the top two floors altogether. Travis: “Did the mansion get as much careful planning from Scanlan as the tower did from Caleb?” Sam: Absolutely not. But they were still thinking small in C1, figuring out how things went, and they didn’t have as much detail in their heads yet.

And that’s all the time we have for tonight! We end on everyone whispering way too close into their mics and tapping fingernails on mason jars. A fitting end to this crazy episode, I think.

I really enjoyed that Former Lives Registry meme this morning, and spent the next couple hours having thoughts and ideas about how a world like that would function.

-reality shows spring up quickly, making several thematically-related-in their-former-lives people live together for several weeks for the world’s amusement. Prizes are awarded for correctly guessing roommates’ former lives; each former lives house is designed to best spark memories, with modern but evocative clothing, and activities carefully themed around the correct time period; and the producers eagerly do shit like force Marie Antoinette and Napoleon to cohabitate and interact with each other in the hopes that sparks will fly. whenever a romance emerges, viewers are quick to scream “soulmaaaaaaates” and then it’s super awkward when they almost inevitably break up.

-massive legal battles begin over whether it’s okay to will your property and possessions to your next life. it becomes legal entirely because companies want your debt to track through your lives so you can never get out of paying them. the children of rich people lose their minds and quite a lot of inheritance, while others are able to build wealth very slowly by using more than one lifetime to accumulate. spiritual leaders make a lot of stink about whether it is right to do this, to circumvent the circumstances your karmic balance chose, but an uncomfortably large number of them still do it for themselves. next stage is people attempting to raid museums for their past life’s personal property, which might be the final straw that undoes this legal nightmare.

-suicides skyrocket. The FLR desperately reminds people that it hasn’t adequately studied whether particular kinds of lives or deaths correlate to a particular kind of life afterwards and they might be dooming themselves to a rough next life. That doesn’t stop anybody.

-tons of research opportunities. Crunch the data and find out how often people tend to reincarnate within families, whether karma appears to be in effect, what is the actual percentage of people with a famous or notable past life! Get people to deep dive into their past lives and scrounge up memories for a shit ton of authentic historical and anthropological data to sift through! Psychologists choose a person and study their full history, and discuss the effects of their past lives on their current psychology!

-it becomes a thing for new parents to try and check up on their baby’s former lives. many start planning former life reveal parties. you get lots of people being uncomfortably proud that their child is the reincarnation of their own great grandfather, complete with weird Instagram photo shoots, and let’s not even get started with obsessive parents who found out their child’s former life was someone even remotely notable. “our little Kaytlynn is the reincarnation of the third cousin of a saint! #blessed” “baby Declan used to be a baseball player who almost made it to the World Series! We have to make his dream come true in this life!”

-the flr is forever collecting new data. they rely on the information found in a person’s subconscious memories of their former life to catalogue it. Recent past lives are easy to follow up on and match with known information, but it’s tough to be sure about the name and dates of a random farmer from 467AD. They do their best, and provide people with ways of connecting with people they knew in former lives. They don’t know who you were until you get scanned. They advertise by pointing out the famous people they still haven’t identified (ie who used to be Marilyn Monroe? We don’t know! It might be you! Come find out!).

-I guess I have decided that you go in, get scanned, and the information in your subconscious past life memories (which are easily distinguishable from normal memories, somehow) is quickly converted into a few pages of summary. they keep and compile the data. it’s like those genetic dna testing things to see where your family came from.

if in the third act of DA4, by the time our protagonist has grown absurdly powerful, enough to be of real use to a sorta-god, we had the option to team up with Solas (stay with me) against our Corypheus-but-better third party bad guy....

and then betray the shit out of him.

Like Scar-tossing-Mufasa-under-the-stampede style, step over him and leave his ass, idk... trapped in the Fade forever or some shit like that. Probably not dead because then some people would probably riot, but just making it absolutely clear that this outcome is the exact opposite of what he would have wanted, and that there is no reversing it. Also emphasizing that this whole thing? Was because he severely underestimated the modern ages and the ingenuity of its peoples.

Now THAT would be some deeply satisfying karmic payoff. A well-done, well-rounded, finished character arc.

And petty revenge for me, but that’s not the point.

David Moore: I've started listening to Spotify's New Music Friday with my son, letting the EXPLICIT tag help guide me through the obvious landmines. But I still hit an occasional favorite of his, like "Last Hurrah" by Bebe Rexha, that has me crossing my fingers that he doesn't start spontaneously singing "farewell tequila, so long margarita, lady sativa, I hate to leave ya!" (wocka wocka wocka) at preschool. This means that I end up listening to a song that is resolutely a [5] well over a hundred times. A true stress test of my critical integrity -- not a torture chamber of endless loops of Thomas the Tank Engine and Katy Perry, whose yawp in "Firework" at the hiccuping "sky-y-y" has the exact timbre and pitch of my son's temper tantrums, giving her omnipresence in my household an unsettling karmic quality, nor a serendipitous window into a song I'm underrating. After one hundred listens to this little bon bon on the conveyor belt -- this thing that I will forget even after listening to it another hundred times -- do I have anything more interesting to say than some forced wordplay combining T-Pain and "Dragostea Din Tei"? No -- "Buy Numa a Drank." Once more from the top. [5]

Katie Gill: Between this and "I'm A Mess," Rexha is trying REAL HARD to distance herself from the countryesque cornball of "Meant To Be." I don't know if this edgy, "look at me, I'm a trainwreck" vibe will fully wipe the memories of Florida Georgia Line from our brains, but, well, it's certainly something. Something aiming for party girl but landing in tryhard, but something nonetheless. [4]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: We all have our vices that we want to overcome, and Bebe Rexha has created an anthem that pinpoints the regret of pushing back such resolutions. But sometimes, a final night of debauchery is just a performative gesture and ends up being extremely boring and kind of embarrassing. Is there anything more unexciting, tedious, and appropriate than the undulating wail of the titular line? [5]

Alex Clifton: The conceit of self-destruction is pretty great, and at 2:30 it's a short, punchy package, but I spent several listens trying to figure out what other songs I was hearing in the mix. The melodic line that begin the verses and "this is my last hurrah, once I start" are extremely, earwormingly familiar, but I can't figure out whether they're actual echoes of something I've heard. "Last Hurrah" is the least bland Bebe Rexha song I've heard, and yet I'm still convinced it's stolen from someone else. [4]

Katherine St Asaph: I liked "Last Hurrah" well enough when it was called "I Said Hi" -- the chain from '90s pop-rock to '10s radio filler has a lot of intermediate links, like "I'm a Mess" quoting "Bitch" or "Last Hurrah" being written by '90s singer-songwriter turned one-third of the Matrix turned resurfaced Matrix-free songwriter Lauren Christy. (There's no way to say this without sounding like one of those smugass "Eleanor Rigby"-versus-"Baby Shark" memes, and god knows I've written tons of shit for pay, but man, "The Night I Saved Peter Ustinov" to this?) I also liked "Last Hurrah" well enough when it was called "I Can't Stop Drinking About You," or "I'm Gonna Show You Crazy," or Rexha's many other hurrahs of this same basic idea. And I still like "Last Hurrah" now, even though it's been commandeered by Twenty One Pilots. [6]

I'm so sad that this type of post-apocalyptic dance-pop sounds so staid and rote now. Maybe if "Last Hurrah" was a little more tongue-in-cheek and humorous, it would be a good, wry commentary on how tiring it is to be alive right now. But nah, this isn't it. Even stretching out the syllable of "a-Aa-A-aa-aH" can't wake this song up. [4]
